  • Partnership Over Power: Why Accepting Influence Is So Important

    Healthy relationships aren’t built on one partner leading and the other following. They thrive when partners are equals, each with valuable thoughts, feelings, and needs.     Being open to your partner’s ideas and opinions

    You may not agree with everything they say, and you don’t have to. Accepting influence means that you consider their perspective in your decision making. 

    Do you take your partner’s feelings into consideration when making decisions?

    Acknowledging your partner has a valid point of view

    There are two people in your relationship, and therefore there are two sides to everything. Neither is more true or valid than the other. Even if their point of view differs from yours, accepting influence means recognizing that their thoughts and feelings are valid and grounded in their experiences and emotions. 

    Are you willing to acknowledge your partner makes fair points, even during disagreements?

    Sending the message: you matter to me

    When you take their input seriously, you show them that they are important to you. Even a small statement like, “I see why you feel that way,” communicates care and respect. 

    Do you take your partner’s opinions and preferences seriously?

    What Accepting Influence is Not

    There can often be resistance and confusion when approaching the topic of accepting influence. Phrases get thrown around like, “Anything you say, dear,” or “Happy wife, happy life.” Neither convey the true meaning of accepting influence. 

    It’s not compliance or obedience

    You don’t need to agree with everything your partner says or wants. Healthy boundaries and individuality are essential in an equal partnership.

    It’s not abandoning your own needs or opinions

    Accepting influence is mutual. Both partners should feel valued and heard. It doesn’t mean sacrificing your needs or always being the flexible one. It’s about creating space for both perspectives so you can make decisions together. 

    It’s not saying yes to avoid conflict

    A forced “yes, dear,” or “whatever you want,” isn’t acceptance, it’s avoidance. Avoiding conflict with passive agreement can create resentment over time. True acceptance comes from listening, asking questions, and working towards decisions that consider both partner’s feelings and needs.

    What Happens if You Don’t Accept Influence

    Gottman research has shown that when one partner resists accepting influence, relationships are far more likely to become distressed and gridlocked. Notably, partners who refuse to accept influence are more likely to escalate conflict. And when one partner resists the other’s viewpoint or tries to dominate decisions rather than share influence, that is highly correlated with later divorce or relationship breakdown.

    Here’s an example: 

    Sam wants to explore refinancing their house because interest rates have dropped. Taylor doesn’t want to deal with it. 

    Sam: I looked into it today, if we refinance we could save $400 a month! I think it’s worth talking to lenders, at least. 

    Taylor: No, I’m not doing that. It’s too much of a hassle. We’re fine the way things are. 

    Sam: I get that it’s a lot of paperwork, but the savings could really help us. Maybe we could do it together? 

    Taylor: No, Sam. You always try to make everything complicated. I don’t need to deal with this right now. 

    Sam: I’m just trying to explore our options. It affects both of us.

    Taylor: Oh really? Do you pay for everything then with your giant paycheck? Just let me handle things. Turns on the TV and ignores Sam further.

    As you can see in this example, instead of being open to Sam’s idea and asking questions, Taylor shuts it down immediately with rigid language. Then, Taylor moves on to criticism and harmful sarcasm that turns into stonewalling and dominance. This blocks collaboration, ignores the shared financial decision, and conveys disrespect. 

    The Four Horsemen can often make an appearance when one partner resists accepting influence in a relationship. The resistant partner may use the four horsemen (criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling) to drown out their partner’s feelings, effectively obliterating their point of view. This approach leads to instability in the relationship. 

    It’s important to note that even small moments matter in a big way. Gottman’s research shows that relationships rarely fall apart because of one major issue, it’s the steady buildup of everyday dismissals that erodes trust. When a partner repeatedly hears things like “That doesn’t make sense” or “You’re overreacting,” they slowly begin to feel unheard and unimportant. Over time, these small rejections add up, creating distance and weakening the bond. Couples who stay open, curious, and respectful in these everyday interactions are able to build trust and connection that keeps their relationship strong.

    Why Accepting Influence is Important

    It makes conflict resolution easier

    Sharing decision-making and respecting your partner’s point of view are important steps toward healthy compromise. When you can accept influence from your partner, it becomes easier to handle conflict together. No matter what the issue is, being able to hear and acknowledge your partner’s thoughts and feelings helps keep conversations calm and strengthens your relationship.

    It results in higher relationship satisfaction

    Couples who act as equals in decision making, emotional discussions, and daily life are significantly more likely to stay together and report higher relationship satisfaction. When both partners feel their opinions matter, they’re more willing to communicate openly and stay emotionally connected. Mutual influence prevents power struggles and supports a sense of teamwork which makes couples feel more satisfied with their relationship over time. 

    It builds trust and emotional safety

    Accepting influence shows your partner that their feelings, needs, and perspectives matter to you. When both partners respond to each other with openness, it creates emotional safety in the relationship. Over time, this builds trust. Partners feel more comfortable being vulnerable, bringing up concerns, and sharing openly. Trust acts as a buffer during hard times and strengthens the overall foundation of the relationship. 

    Here’s an example using the same scenario as above, but Taylor and Sam accept each other’s influence instead: 

    Sam: I looked into it today, if we refinance we could save $400 a month! I think it’s worth talking to lenders, at least. 

    Taylor: That’s a good chunk of money. I can see why you’d want to look into it. It seems like a lot though. 

    Sam: I know it’s a lot of paperwork, but the savings could really help us.

    Taylor: Yeah, the paperwork and how long the process is stresses me out. But maybe if we take it one step at a time, it won’t feel too overwhelming.

    Sam: That makes sense. We could start with something small like calling or emailing some lenders together to see what the process looks like?

    Taylor: I can do that. Making a few calls or sending a few emails sounds manageable. Then we’ll know if it’s worth it.

    In this example, Taylor acknowledges Sam’s perspective. They don’t agree in the beginning, but Taylor stays open to Sam’s idea. Taylor shares concerns without shutting down the idea, and Sam acknowledges Taylor’s concerns and provides a potential solution. They end the conversation with a reasonable plan to move forward.

    How to Practice Accepting Influence in Your Relationship

    1. Soften your startup

    How a conversation begins predicts how it will end. Approaching your partner gently rather than critically makes it easier for both of you to stay open.

    1. Listen with curiosity rather than defensiveness

    Instead of preparing your counter argument, tune into what your partner feels and needs. Ask open-ended questions and show genuine interest. Emotional intelligence plays a role in accepting influence. Couples who use gentleness and validation are able to navigate disagreements or differences in opinion more successfully. 

    1. Look for areas where you can yield

    Accepting influence doesn’t mean giving up everything, it means finding points where you can say:

    “That makes sense.”

    “I hadn’t thought of it that way.”

    “I can be flexible on this part.”

    1. Validate before problem-solving

    You don’t need to agree to acknowledge your partner’s viewpoint. Statements like “I understand why this matters to you” create emotional safety.

    1. Share the decision-making

    Couples who collaborate on finances, chores, parenting, boundaries with extended family, and daily routines create a more balanced, respectful dynamic.

    1. Notice when pride or rigidity gets in the way

    A key takeaway from the Gottman findings is that stonewalling, dominance, or refusal to compromise is often rooted in stress or self-protection. Awareness around when your pride might be getting in the way can help you shift towards openness. 

    If you’re having difficulty accepting influence, it’s worth discussing with your partner. No one can change old habits overnight, but if you’re able to take responsibility for your difficulty with sharing power, it will help you move forward.

  • How to Plant Fall Bulbs for Long-Lasting Spring Colour – Garden Therapy

    The spring garden is a joyous sight full of colour and happy blooms, many of which come from bulbs (or corms and tubers) that are planted in the fall. Spring gardening may be the last thing on your mind while you are busily tending to autumn chores, but take a bit of time to plant some fall bulbs, and I know you will be thanking me next year for this little reminder!

    Fall bulbs are also known as spring-flowering bulbs. The two terms are used interchangeably, and both are technically correct as the bulbs are available for sale and planted in the fall, but they flower in the spring.

    There are also a number of lovely bulbs you plant in the spring for summer blooms. These would be most accurately called summer flowering bulbs, as it could be too confusing to call them spring bulbs.

    No matter what you call them, they make wonderful garden decoration and cut flowers to bring inside the house. They are easy to plant, and if they are happy in the spot you’ve put them in, they will come back year after year (in most cases).

    Really, what’s not to love?

    The only caveat is that you need to REMEMBER to plant them in the fall because they require a period of cold temperatures to stimulate root development. I think that’s why I’ve always heard them called “fall bulbs;” from the messaging that is out there reminding us gardeners to get planting the bulbs that will grow our spring flowers.

    Let me show you how to plant them!

    What’s in a Name? Bulbs, Corms, and Tubers

    Flower “bulb” is the commonly used term for a swollen underground plant part, such as a true bulb, corm, or tuber. While it’s not unusual to group these types of plants together because they share similar planting and storage characteristics, it can be helpful to know the difference when cultivating the different types of plants.

    Flowerbulb.eu helps to clarify more for us, “Technically speaking, many popular ‘bulb” flowers are not produced from true flower bulbs at all. Crocuses and gladioli, for example, are really corms, while such favourites as dahlias and begonias are really tubers. The main distinguishing trait is their method of storing food. In corms, most of the food is stored in an enlarged basal plate rather than the fleshy scales, which in corms are much smaller.”

    Planting and Caring for Fall Bulbs

    When to Plant Spring Flowering Fall Bulbs

    Spring-flowering bulbs get planted sometime in the fall, but the timing varies for each type of flower. As a general rule, plant them as early in the fall as you can so that the bulbs have a chance to develop a strong root system. At the very latest, they must go into the ground before the last frost.

    If you’re buying your bulbs from a mail-order company, they won’t ship them out until the ideal planting time for your area, so the work is usually done for you.

    If you are purchasing bulbs from a garden centre, they will often stock them a bit earlier than the ideal planting date and continue selling them until they are sold out, possibly long after frost. Be sure to thoroughly read the instructions and timing for planting the individual bulbs to get the best results.

    It’s best to plant bulbs as soon as they arrive in the mail or you pick them up at the garden center. If you have to delay planting for some reason, then store them in a dry, cool location, out of direct sunlight, where temperatures are between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

    “Most spring-flowering Dutch flower bulbs will thrive in either full or partial sun, but will do just fine in almost any location that offers good drainage. Flower bulbs will rot in standing water, so avoid areas prone to flooding, such as at the bottom of slopes or under drainage pipes.

    After choosing the site:

    • Dig either a trench for a bed planting or individual holes for individual flower bulbs or a small cluster of flower bulbs. To determine how deep to plant, consider the diameter or size of the flower bulb. Large flower bulbs (2 inches across or more) are usually planted about 6 inches deep; smaller-sized flower bulbs (1 inch) are planted 3-4 inches deep.
    • Loosen the soil with a rake to aerate it and also remove any weeds and small stones. Mix in a bit of compost to improve soil drainage. Place, do not push, bulbs firmly in the soil with the pointed side up. Space large bulbs 3-8 inches apart and small bulbs 1-3 inches apart. (If you’re not sure which end is right side up, don’t worry. Upside-down flower bulbs usually come up anyway!)
    • Cover the flower bulbs with soil and then water generously if the soil is not yet moist. Add 2-3 inches of mulch on top of the garden bed. This will provide added protection from the cold and keep the soil from drying out.”

    Designing With Spring Flowering Bulbs

    Now, let’s look at how to design with bulbs in the garden.

    Just as there are many garden styles, there are many different ways of planting bulbs in your garden. They can be scattered throughout the beds, popping up between perennials and shrubs. They can create a decorative border lining a walkway or framing evergreen garden features. Or they can be layered so that you have intentional waves of blooms producing consistently over many months.

    Scattering Bulbs Throughout the Garden

    Spring-flowering bulbs are the perfect way to add some lively colour to a garden filled with perennials, shrubs, and trees that are dormant in the winter. While the perennials and shrubs are beginning to set out new shoots and leaves, strategically-placed bulbs fill in the spaces.

    Choose bulbs that bloom at the times when your perennial trees and shrubs are dormant. Then plant them in groups of five to seven around the roots of the dormant plants.

    To allow the bulbs to naturalize with the existing plants, be sure to plant in the loose soil near the plants and mark the spot so you don’t accidentally dig the bulbs up when dividing the perennials.

    Planting Bulbs in a Border

    A border of fall bulbs is a lovely way to line a walkway or the front of a garden bed. The placement of these bulbs is the opposite of planting them above the roots of perennials and shrubs. Instead, you will plant these deeper in the soil and add annuals above them to fill in those months when they are not blooming.

    These bulbs are planted in the fall, at which time you can plant fall annuals in the soil above. In the spring, the bulbs will bloom, and when they die back, the soil above can be planted again with summer annuals.

    Layering Bulbs

    Layering fall bulbs refers to planting different types of flower bulbs at different depths in the soil to stagger the bloom times and increase the number of flowers that you can get in a small space. Many refer to this as planting flower bulb lasagna.

    To layer fall bulbs, select a combination of bulbs that will do well in similar conditions, but that have different bloom times, heights, and decorative features like colour.

    Plant the bulbs at the recommended planting depth, which will usually be planting larger bulbs into the ground around 6 to 8 inches deep, medium bulbs above them at 3 to 5 inches deep, and the smallest in the top 1 to 2 in of soil.

    Overwintering Fall Bulbs

    Spring-flowering fall bulbs will not only tolerate cool winter soil, but they need it in order to thrive. Many bulbs are tolerant of many different soil types as well, as much as what they need to grow is stored in the bulb. The biggest question that many people have about overwintering bulbs is whether to water them or not.

    The answer is, “not really.”

    Newly planted bulbs should be watered in the fall in an area that drains well. As the season cools, they do not need to be watered, but also don’t need to be protected from rain or snow as long as the bulbs you are choosing are suitable to plant in your climate and hardiness zone.

    As long as the soil is free-draining and they aren’t left sitting in standing water, they will be happily dormant until the spring. In spring, watering is only necessary if the soil is dry.

  • How to Trim Hedges (Guide to Pruning) – Garden Therapy

    When properly cared for, hedges can be beautiful ornamental additions to your garden. So how get here from a shapeless and scary shrub? Easy! Learn how to trim hedges! This guide will show you how and when to prune edges, and how to keep them thriving. 

    When it comes to urban landscaping, nearly every garden has a hedge. They’re great for providing privacy from nearby neighbours as a living green wall.

    While shaping a hedge can be a wonderful way to create a backdrop in your garden, it requires some maintenance to keep it looking good for the long term.

    Here are some tips on how to prune hedges, along with the tools to use, proper timing, and a few helpful tips.

    How to Trim Hedges

    Pruning hedges is very different than pruning trees. When pruning trees and shrubs, I always suggest following the natural lines of the plant. The two exceptions to this rule are hedges and topiaries.

    Because growing a number of plants together in a decorative shape fights against how the plants would naturally grow, it’s best to plan the hedge well and then keep up with pruning during its lifetime.

    Here is everything you need to know about how to trim hedges.

    Choose the Right Hedging Plants

    First things first, make sure you’re growing a hedge with plants that respond well to being grown as a hedge. Hedging plants can be deciduous or evergreen; broad-leaf or coniferous. The thing they all have in common is how they respond to heading cuts: by filling out.

    The Best Plants to Use as Hedges

    Plants suitable for hedging will be noted “hedging plants” or “topiaries” on their plant labels. Some popular varieties include:

    • boxwood (Buxus)
    • privet (Ligustrum)
    • yew (Taxus)
    • laurel (Laurus nobilis)
    • barberry (Berberis)
    • quince (Cydonia oblonga)
    • Euonymous, holly (Ilex)
    • juniper (Juniperus)
    • thuja (Arborvitae)
    • cedar (Cedrus)
    • firethorn (Pyracantha)
    • Viburnum

    Start Trimming Hedges Young

     Plants that are trained from a very young age make for the best hedge.

    • In the first two years, the plants will be cut back six to eight inches to encourage branching close to the core of the plant.
    • In the third year, the hedge can be shaped. This will determine its structure as it grows to its final mature size.

    If the hedge isn’t shaped until after the plants have grown to their full size, there won’t be enough branching at the base to create a full hedge.

    Patience is key for a hedge. You need to cut them back significantly in the first two years.

    When the hedge is at the size and shape that you like, the best way to maintain the look is to trim it frequently.

    When to Trim Hedges

    As a general rule, prune the hedge before the new growth blocks the sun from the lower leaves. As the lower leaves lose sunlight, they begin to die off in favour of the new growth.

    Some evergreens are quite quick-growing and need to be pruned every four to six weeks in the growing season, while others may grow a bit slower and only need to be pruned once. The best way to determine how often to prune is to watch the growth and trim it before it begins to shade the leaves below.

    How to Trim Hedges Easily with the Right Tools

    Part of learning how to trim hedges is choosing the right tools to work with. Many people choose electric trimmers seemingly for convenience and ease, but they can actually damage your bushes.

    Many people use electric trimmers to prune a hedge, but hand tools give you a cleaner cut and less damage to the branches.

    An electric hedging tool will tear and rip the branches, leaving uneven cuts, while a hand tool leaves clean cuts that heal nicely and keep the plant healthy. Uneven cuts stress out the plant and are an open invitation for disease.

    Prepare to Prune

    One of the most important steps in learning how to trim hedges is the prep work. Before trimming your hedge, clear your workspace. Remember, it’s always best to wear safety goggles and gloves. Additionally, you may wish to drop a tarp below your hedge to catch your clippings in order to make cleanup easier.

    It can be challenging to maintain a uniform shape when pruning a formal hedge. It helps to use guidelines as reference points on where to cut and how much.

    You can achieve this by running a string line tied tautly between stakes along the bottom of the hedge to guide how much of the side to remove, and running a string line along the top to guide how much of the top to remove.

    Clean and sharpen your tools before pruning. Keep a bucket of soapy water and a rag on hand to clean your tools in between plants if you are pruning multiple hedges. As cuts open up the wood to disease, it’s important to make sure you are keeping your tools clean.

    Here are some of my favourite hedge trimming tools that help me keep my own shrubs in shape.

    Start pruning at the bottom of the hedge and work your way up so that cut branches and leaves at the top can freely fall to the ground.

    Shear the hedge in shallow layers to make sure you don’t accidentally expose bald spots in some of the shrubs. Position the blades at a right angle to the branches to get the cleanest cut. Be sure not to twist the branches or approach them at an odd angle, as they won’t cut cleanly.

    If you use a string line, ensure that your shears are consistently parallel with your shrub to stay on track. If you tend to go off line a little bit it’s not going to make a huge difference; the plant will grow and fill in the gaps. With practice, it will become second nature.

    How to Repair Damaged Hedges

    If your hedge has become overgrown, or is bare or dying back, it can be hard to repair. Evergreen plants will not generally fill back in; it is better to replace the individual plants. Deciduous hedges will come back over time if carefully pruned when dormant.

    Either way, it’s best to keep up with the job throughout the season and maintain your hedge properly rather than to fix problems once they arise.

    Urgent Prop 3 community town hall will feature discussion about marriage equality with local LGBTQ+ leaders 

    Los Angeles Council District 14 (CD-14) candidates Ysabel Jurado and Kevin de León sparred over their qualifications in what could have been their last in-person debate before the November election. 

    Wednesday’s CD-14 debate, a district home to approximately 265,000 people, 70% of them Latin American, offered the public a chance to hear from both candidates and their stand on issues such as homelessness, public safety and affordable housing, among other things. 

    CALÓ News was one of the media outlets that were present inside Dolores Mission Catholic Church in Boyle Heights, where the debate was held. Below are our reporter’s main takeaways.  

    People showed up and showed out. More than 300 people attended the debate, which was organized by Boyle Heights Beat and Proyecto Pastoral. More than 260 people gathered inside the church and the rest watched via a livestream projected on the church’s patio. 

    The debate was bilingual, with translation services available for all, honoring the many Spanish speakers that live in the district, as Brendan P. Busse, pastor of the church, said in the opening statement. 

    As part of the event guidelines, Busse also shared that no applause or booing was to be permitted, a rule that was broken within the first ten minutes of the forum. “Where you are tonight is a sacred place. People who are in need of shelter sleep here and have for the last 40 years,” he said when referring to the church transforming into a homeless shelter at night for over 30 adults. “Power and peace can live in the same place.”

    That was the most peaceful and serene moment throughout the two-hour forum. 

    What followed was traded insults and competing visions from both candidates. 

    One of the first stabs occurred when De León accused Jurado of wanting to “abolish the police” and when Jurado reminded the public of De Leon’s “racist rhetoric,” referring to the 2022 scandal over the secretly recorded conversation with Gil Cedillo and Nury Martínez where they talked about indigenous Mexicans, Oaxacans, the Black and LGBTQ+ communities and councilman Mike Bonin’s adopted son.

    “I made a mistake, and I took responsibility. I have been apologizing for two years,” De León said. “Just as in the traditions of the Jesuits, love, reconciliation [and] peace, one must choose if we are going to be clinging to the past or move forward. I choose to move forward.” 

    When Jurado was asked about her stance on police, she said she had never said she wanted to abolish the police. “Don’t put words in my mouth,” she told De León. “I have never said that,” she said. “We put so much money into public safety into the LAPD yet street business owners and residents in these communities do not feel safer. The safest cities invest in communities, in recreation and parks, in libraries [and] youth development.”  

    De León and Jurado also discussed their plan to work with the homeless population, specifically during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County, an estimated 75,312 people were experiencing homelessness, as stated in the 2024 homeless count. For CD-14 the issue of homelessness takes a higher level as it is home to Skid Row, which has one of the largest homeless populations in the U.S. 

    “We should continue to house our unhoused,” De León said. 

    He followed this by saying that under his leadership, CD-14 has built the most interim housing than “in any other place in the entire city of L.A.” He made a reference to the Boyle Heights Tiny Home Village and 1904 Bailey, both housing projects in CD-14. 

    “We need safety when the Olympics come,” he added. 

    Jurado said De León’s leadership has fallen short in his years in office, specifically when it comes to the homeless population and said that housing like the tiny homes is not sufficient for people in the district to live comfortably.

    “My opponent has governed this district, Skid Row, for over 20 years. Has homelessness in this district gotten better? We can all agree that it hasn’t,” she said. “County Supervisor Hilda Solís put up 200 units that are not just sheds; they have bathrooms, they have places and they have support services. Why hasn’t [CD-14] gotten something better than these tiny homes?”

    One of De León’s repeating arguments in various of his answers was the fact that Jurado has never held public office before. “I’ve dedicated my whole life to public service, to the benefit of our people. My opponent, to this day, has not done one single thing,” De León said in the first few minutes of the debate. 

    In one of the questions about low-income elders in the district, he listed some of his achievements when helping this population, including bringing free vaccines for pets of seniors of this district and food distributions, which, as De León noted, help people with basic food needs, including beans, rice and chicken. “The same chicken sold in Whole Foods,” he said.

    Jurado defended herself against the reality of never holding public office and said her work as a housing rights attorney and affordable housing activist have given her the tools and experience to lead the district in a different direction than the incumbent, De León.  “We can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results,” Jurado said. ‘We need long-term solutions,” she said. 

    Last month, The L.A. Times also reported on Jurado’s past political experience, including working on John Choi’s unsuccessful 2013 run for City Council, as well as her work as a scheduler in Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office and how she was appointed by Garcetti to the Human Relations Commission in 2021.

    She later added that she was proud to already have the support of some of the L.A. City Council members, such as Eunisses Hernández, Nithya Raman and Hugo Soto-Martínez, which De León later referred to as the “socialist council members.” 

    After the debate, CALÓ News talked to both candidates and asked how they thought the debate went. 

    “It was a spirited debate, no question about it,” De León said. “Sometimes elections can take a real ugly twist that is very similar to Trump-ian characteristics. Like Donald Trump just says whatever he wants to say, no matter how outlandish [or] inaccurate it is.”

    When asked the same question, Jurado said, “ I think my opponent said a bunch of lies and said that he has plans for this district when he’s had four years to execute all of them. It’s really disappointing that only now he suddenly has all these ideas and plans for this district.”

    Both candidates told CALÓ News they will continue working until election day and making sure CD-14 residents show up to vote. 

    “But I think past the debate[s], it’s just [about] keeping your nose to [the] grindstone, working hard, and taking nothing for granted, knocking on those doors and talking directly to voters,” De León said. 

    Jurado said she still has a couple other events that she and her team are hosting before election day. “I’m out here talking to voters. We want to make sure that people know who I am and that they have other options. People are disappointed. We’re going to keep folks engaged and make sure that [they] turn out to the polls,” she said.

    Jorge Ramírez, 63, from Lincoln Heights, said he has been supporting De León since his time in the State Senate and said he will continue to vote for him because he doesn’t know much about his opponent. “He is the type of person we need. He’s done a lot for immigrants,” he said. “The other person, we don’t know much about her and she’s not very well known. She doesn’t have much experience in this field.”

    Alejandra Sánchez, whose daughter goes to school in Boyle Heights and lives in El Sereno, said she believes CD-14 has been in desperate need of new leadership and worries that many people will vote for De Leon just because he is who they have known for so long. “It’s very powerful to see a woman leader step in… It’s been an incredible year to see a woman president elected in Mexico, a woman running for president in the U.S. and a woman also running for leadership here in our community,’ she said. “That’s part of the problem… we are afraid to think about something new, about the new leadership of someone doing things differently.”

    If you like tulips then there are a number of other spring flowering bulbs that you will love! This list showcases flower bulbs that are super early bloomers, have stop-you-in-your-tracks fragrance, or produce unique flowers that give tulips a run for their money. Why not plant some of these bulbs this fall and create a stunning spring garden?

    Tulips are wonderful plants. Frilly parrot tulips, deep-dark-almost-black purple tulips, cheery giant tulips, and many more can be found in my garden beds.

    But tulips aren’t the only spring flowering bulbs I give space to in my garden. I get just as much (maybe even more) enjoyment out of these outstanding spring bloomers. And fall is the time to get them in the ground!

    Snowdrop (Galanthus spp.)

    Snowdrops are close to my heart because they are the very first flower that shows its head in late winter, letting us know that spring is close at hand.

    These delicate white and green bell-shaped flowers may seem unassuming, but in the winter, when everything else is gray and brown and dreary, their sweet stalks and blooms are like a breath of fresh air.

    Snowdrop bulbs can be hard to find in the fall, but if you’re lucky enough to stumble upon some at your local garden center, buy them and get them in the ground as soon as possible because they can dry out easily.

    Snowflake (Leucojum vernum)

    Snowflakes are similar to snowdrops in how early they bloom, although they have six equal-length petals and are a much rarer bulb to come by. They love moist soil and are perfect planted beside a pond or water garden. These are well-suited for the rainy winter conditions of my Vancouver garden.

    Dutch Hyacinth (Hyacinthus spp.)

    Dutch hyacinths are not only gorgeous with their tightly clustered bell-shaped flowers in many  colours options, but they also have the most heavenly perfume!

    In the Victorian era, hyacinths were revered for their scent. It was common to devote an entire garden to these fragrant flowers alone. Plant in full sun or partial shade and they will bloom in early spring.

    Grape Hyacinth (Muscari armeniacum)

    Grape hyacinths are not at all related to Dutch hyacinths; they are the Muscari genus, which has about 30 different species. While they are all prolific bulbs that naturalize easily, the colours can range from white to deep blue and, of course, grape-purple.

    Muscari look beautiful when planted in rivers through gardens, and they do extremely well in containers. The individual blooms may be diminutive, but grown together they are absolutely stunning. They’re part of my flower bulb lawn!

    Grape hyacinths bloom longer than most other spring flowering bulbs too. They make a great cut flower, they provide an early nectar source for pollinators (except for the double ones) and they are deer and rabbit resistant.

    Fritillaria meleagris is sometimes called Checkered Lily or Snake Lily. It looks exotic with its downward-facing, bell-shaped flowers in purple and white checkers.

    It does well in the shade and thrives in moist soil. I visited a woodland garden where it naturalized easily, and the masses of checkers beneath the mossy trees were picture-perfect. Fritillaria blooms in mid-spring.

    Imperial Fritillaria (Fritillaria imperialis)

    Imperial Fritillaria is every bit as weird to plant as it is to enjoy in the garden. The bulbs are large, and they do not smell good, so you will want to get them planted as soon as they arrive.

    This also keeps them from getting damaged if the roots begin to sprout. They have a distinctive musky smell when blooming, which isn’t for everyone but that scent deters moles, deer, and squirrels. I personally enjoy planting them because they look like they are wearing crowns.

    Oxalis (Oxalis adenophylla)

    Oxalis are lovely plants for both foliage and flowers. Known as Silver Shamrocks, they have pretty clover-like leaves and pink blooms. In the right conditions they are trouble-free plants that naturalize easily, resist pests and disease, and are even deer and rabbit proof. They are happy in sun or part shade, as long as there is excellent drainage. Rock gardens and pots are perfect for oxalis.

    Dutch Iris (Iris × hollandica)

    Dutch Iris produces elegant, deep blue or purple flower heads atop long, slender stalks, creating a stunning display that’s not to be missed. In Greek mythology, the goddess Iris represented the link between heaven and earth, and it’s no wonder these heavenly flowers bear her name now. Plant in a sunny area in early fall. Irises attract pollinators and make beautiful cut flowers.

    Crocus (Iridaceae spp.)

    Crocuses are a member of the iris family and one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring. They are beautiful and can be planted in the garden bed or directly in the lawn for a meadowy look (they’ll start to die back by the time the lawn comes in enough to need mowing).

    They are also wonderful for layering in beds or pots above other bulbs or perennials, as they provide early blooms and die back just as the later flowers begin to sprout. In addition to providing colourful early spring blooms in purple, white, and yellow, crocus is a beneficial source of pollen for our bee friends.

    Anemone (Anemone coronaria)

    During the nineteenth century in Europe, people believed that anemone flowers would ward off bad luck, so planting these might just bring you luck and will certainly yield a ton of beauty in the garden.

    Anemones are hardworking plants with flowers in striking, deep jewel tones. They produce many blooms from each tuber so they are a great cutting flower that just keeps going from spring to summer. Tip: soak the tubers for a couple of hours before planting.

    Daffodil (Narcissus spp.)

    The sunny yellow trumpets of daffodils are a symbol of spring season change and look striking when planted en masse.

    Before you pass by this beauty as too common, it’s worth having a look at some of the gorgeous varieties that show why the Narcissus species was aptly named after the Greek god known for his beauty.     Can I plant bulbs that have sprouted already?

    Bulbs that have already sprouted can still be planted. They’ve likely been left out a little longer and are reacting to the warm conditions. They will pop up just fine in the spring. Plant as indicated, roughly three times the size of the bulb deep.

    When should I plant spring flowering bulbs?

    Spring flowering bulbs should be planted in the fall, beginning in mid-September to mid-December, depending on where you live. You want to ensure they’re in the ground before it freezes. Typically once you buy them, you should plant them shortly after.

    Should I water the bulbs after I plant them?

    You should immediately water spring flowering bulbs after planting them. This will encourage the plant to grow roots and get them established before the cold temperatures arrive. Bulbs planted in pots should also be watered afterward, and continued to be watered until the soil dries out in the pots quickly.

    Tre Dita’s 44-foot ceilings and 40-foot windows are sights to behold and though the restaurant only sits on the second floor of the St. Regis Chicago, the panoramic views are spectacular. There’s also a special corner table set aside to offer a premier perspective. Perhaps, in time, this will rival what LondonHouse’s cupola has become — a popular destination for wedding engagements for folks of a certain ilk.

    The restaurant opened on Saturday. The dramatic vistas at 401 E. Wacker Drive aren’t overstated inside the $1 billion and 1,198-foot skyscraper with 101 stories. Even on an overcast day, high above Navy Pier, and a short walk to the Mag Mile down Upper Wacker Drive, the views are stunning. It’s also close to Millenium Park where Lollapalooza annually sets up shop. Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises will do well to host performers at its restaurants, and Tre Dita is already attracting celebrities. They’ve already served cast members from The Bear and Chicago PD at a preview party. There’s a rear entrance and plenty of private space across two levels so celebrities can enjoy their meals in peace, or be seen if that’s what they want.     Bar Tre Dita has a separate entrance and opened in February. In some ways, it represented a soft opening for the restaurant with a truncated menu of Funke’s favorites. As time goes by, it will evolve into its own identity with a unique menu. The drinks are Italian-focused with grappa, amaru, and vermouth. There are 14 seats at the bar with room for 120 total in the space. Grab a seat and try one of 400 spirits stocked from across the globe.

    The Restaurant

    The quality of the food is important, but Funke reminds us that much of the Italian experience comes from the environment.

    “It’s where you are and who you’re with and it’s what you’re eating,” he says. “If you’re sitting on the island of Capri, eating a caprese salad with the ocean breeze on your face, sipping a glass of white wine with the person you love.”

    With that in mind, Lettuce worked with David Collins Studio to create an 8,600-square-foot space outfitted with gray Tuscan marbles, arched portals, dark-stained timber chequerboard flooring, walnut timber paneling, and wrought-iron light fixtures. There’s room for 130 inside the 3,200-square-foot dining room and a private room for 40 that sits above the main space. There are also five private rooms, each named after a horse that’s competed in the Palio di Siena, a race held biannually in Siena.

    Evan Funke’s Pasta Lab

    Chef Funke is a perfectionist and he believes that pasta needs the perfect environment to consistently create outstanding noodles. His pasta lab, a fixture at two of his other restaurants, is a glassed-off space where staff can ensure dough has the ideal humidity and temperature to produce quality noodles. Of course, customers can peer into the workspace and see the staff at work.

    Gov. Gavin Newsom’s trip to China was many things: A test of his skill in climate diplomacy. An opportunity to burnish his political image on the world stage. A demonstration of the risks of the indulgent photo op.

    That danger played out during a visit to a school in Beijing on Friday where Newsom knocked a child down after stumbling while shooting hoops. They both fell to the ground and quickly sat up. Newsom patted the boy on the back several times before giving him a hug and asking if he was OK.

    It was a cringey moment for the Democratic governor but didn’t cause injuries. Newsom, in dress shoes, a white shirt and slacks, proceeded to play with the 9- and 10-year-old children for several more minutes, spinning the basketball on his fingertip and swishing a few times.

    Then the governor’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, stepped onto the court and took a few shots herself. The Newsoms handed out California-themed pins to the kids and moved on to visit a painting class and a school garden.

    The school visit was meant to highlight Siebel Newsom’s interest in farm-to-school programs. In California, she works to get more fresh food into school meals through partnerships with local farms. The visit to the Beijing school was one stop on a jam-packed agenda in which Newsom visited five cities in seven days and met with President Xi Jinping.

    Many of his events were formulaic meetings with government officials to discuss economic development and clean energy — important work toward his goal of advancing partnerships to thwart climate change, but not particularly photogenic. Other events were clearly designed as visual spectacles meant to enhance Newsom’s image as a leader.

    In one case, Newsom’s office sent out a picture of him standing on the Great Wall wearing aviator-style sunglasses and a pensive expression as he looks toward the sun. The glamour shot quickly set the internet aflame with memes of Newsom in the same pensive pose with various fake backdrops. Among them: the Oval Office and a homeless encampment.

    Newsom’s penchant for splashy photos emerged early in his political career when, as mayor of San Francisco in 2004, he and his then-wife Kimberly Guilfoyle posed for Harper’s Bazaar magazine. Newsom’s arms were wrapped around Guilfoyle as they lay on an opulent rug in the home of the wealthy Getty family. The image has endured over the years as a visual punchline for Newsom’s critics.

    A very different photo from Newsom’s days as mayor re-emerged this week while he was in China. The mayor of Shanghai began a meeting with Newsom by presenting him with a framed photo of his visit to Shanghai in the early 2000s. Newsom was in a schoolyard, shooting hoops with local students.
