Evil friends, what a bittersweet way to kick off a new season. As I’m sure you’ve heard, as I’m sure you’ve screamed to the heavens (or to hell, you do you), we are embarking upon Evil’s fourth and final season. The one silver lining I keep in my head is that, at the very least, knowing this is the last hoorah, Robert and Michelle King will certainly be going for broke. Not that they ever don’t. It’s why we love this show, right? Okay, never mind, this is the worst. Isn’t there a demon I can sell my soul to for a renewal or something? Netflix? (Just kidding.) (Or not.)

Unsurprisingly, we’re starting off the season with a bang. And I’m not even talking about that hilarious, oddly hot sex scene with Kristen and Andy in the Bouchard kitchen. But also I guess I’m not not talking about that? The horniest knife work I’ve ever seen! But really, we should kick things off where the show does, with that glorious opening scene in which Kristen takes in the news that Leland has hijacked her eggs and tossed in his sperm to create the Antichrist. The Antichrist will be born in 38 days, and Leland will raise him, and Kristen thinks that’s honestly just hilarious. No, seriously. As only Kristen Bouchard can, she laughs and laughs at the thought of Leland raising a child. “I can’t think of any greater torture than to give you a baby,” she says, thwarting his plans to get under her skin. “I giggle at the thought of you waking up at 3 a.m. because the Antichrist needs changing.” Oh, reader, I giggle too. Leland always feels a few steps ahead of Kristen and our merry band of assessors, so whenever she can get the better of him, even for a minute, it is delicious. Oh, it’s so good to be back.

After Kristen saunters out of that baby shower (what’s on the Antichrist’s registry?) laughing like a goddamned boss, she gets down to business. Sheryl, who of course has known all along that this was Leland’s plan, is now banned from the Bouchard house and forbidden from seeing her granddaughters. I still can’t get a handle on what Sheryl’s endgame is here. Does she have one? Is she simply possessed and loving it? Is there any part of who she used to be before Leland lit her bed on fire (literally, remember)? She remains a mystery.

Kristen’s plan, though, is crystal clear: In her life, in her house, religion is out and science is in, baby. She’s not even entertaining the possibility of this stuff being real anymore. She wants things to go back to normal. No more demons and goblins and Antichrists, just hot kitchen sex and refusing to take her kids to Sunday Mass. Normal!

She carries this new outlook with her to work, too. The gang is summoned to St. Joseph’s for their next assignment with Father Ignatius. Thank God, this sweet man is back to make us laugh but also, mostly, to make us cry — a picture of Monsignor Korecki up on the wall in his office? Be still my heart. He’s apparently just filling in until the Vatican sends someone else, but come on, we need him. We deserve him.

He hands them our case of the week: People are protesting a particle-accelerator lab called Garrow Research Facility, claiming it could open the gates to hell, and the scientists there have requested that our trio investigate to prove those protestors wrong. At the facility, the scientists, led by a physicist named Ethan, don’t help their cause — they’re super-shady, especially when the team starts asking about the whereabouts of a woman who used to work there and was part of a viral video of people performing a blood sacrifice at the lab. In the video, they stab her — it looks super-fake, but their excuses for why she isn’t around also sound super-fake.

Nothing’s adding up, and when David heads back to his little electric scooter — because Evil can find ways to make anything, even checking out a particle-accelerator facilty, just a little extra kooky — one of the custodial workers, Mateo, has left him a note that says “They’re lying” with a time and place to meet him.

And so they meet. Mateo tells the whole story: When they were building the accelerator, they came across a huge sinkhole miles and miles deep; instead of trying to fill it, they cemented over it — but something’s down there. Mateo has his own video, in which smoke starts to fill the accelerator loop and some sort of creature is obscured by it — a big creature. We see only its outline, but it’s enough to be like, Yeah, sure, that could come from the depths of hell.

Well, for us — its not enough for new, skeptic-on-steroids Kristen. Back in the car, she immediately asks Ben to debunk it, something she requests he now do immediately, and he shows her a video he made using some app that can insert “angels” into videos. Mateo’s video could easily be a fake. The way Katja Herbers gleefully tells her friend “It’s good news, David, there’s no monster coming out of hell” should be studied in universities across this country. It is so good. Why are they canceling this show, again?

Things get more muddled when the crew finally meets with the new Vatican rep, Father La Russo. La Russo informs them that the Vatican isn’t actually worried about the gates of hell being opened but rather about the particle accelerator creating a chain of quantum black holes that could swallow the earth. Admittedly, that is much freakier than the gates of hell. Science is crazy, people. Ben is of the understanding that something like this occurring is nearly impossible, but La Russo wants more than just nearly impossible odds — back to the lab the team goes.

This time, the trio splits up. David hops on his cute li’l scooter again and heads down to the section of the loop Mateo had directed them to. Once he’s left alone, weird things start happening. Mainly, he watches as a giant monster bug demon thing comes slithering out of the hole with the woman from the video’s head on it and she’s still whispering for help. Maybe I take back the thing about the black holes being freakier — it’s a tie.

Kristen and Ben go with Ethan to check out all the safety protocols the lab has to prevent black holes from swallowing the earth. (God, I missed the insane sentences doing Evil recaps allows me to write.) Everything looks normal and up to code, but then Ethan invites them both to actually step into the accelerator, which, like, I know nothing about quantum physics, but I do know not to hop into a particle accelerator. Especially one that may or may not be related to the gates of hell. You know my girl Kristen is an immediate “no” when Ethan makes the offer.

You can probably guess that things go terribly wrong: The accelerator starts up — later, they blame it on a test run, but come on, that thing turned on by itself! — and an ion beam … well, I don’t know how to tell you this exactly, but Ben takes an ion beam directly to the face. In the exact moment it happens, he sees flashes of some weird shit but gets a clean bill of health from several doctors. That sounds all well and good, but then Ben goes home and has a wild vision/hallucination/actual sighting of yet another giant buglike demon. Are all our demons this season going to be bug-esque? I miss Ben’s freaky-deaky horny night ghost, but this development is interesting. For some reason, he doesn’t fill in his buddies on this post-ion-beam occurrence, and that is frustrating. Why do these people who have seen the absolutely weirdest shit together not trust one another when the unexplainable happens.

David does the same thing: He lies to Ben and Kristen about his experience with the sinkhole at B33. Instead, he confides in Sister Andrea. Yeah, she’s a real one, but so are Ben and Kristen. Everyone needs all of the information! I am concerned! During his visit with Sister Andrea, David also informs her of another vision he had, of an angel telling him, “Woe to Babylon in 38 days.” Sounds like a prophecy about the end of the world. And no, you’re not wrong: We’ve heard about something else happening in 38 days, too.

The gang heads back to the particle accelerator one last time, and in true Evil fashion, we get something wild happening with no concrete answer. On security cameras, they watch as Mateo, who has apparently copped to blackmailing the facility and making up all of those videos (yeah, right), heads over to the sinkhole. It looks as though he might jump in, but the sinkhole isn’t fully visible in the shot. We see his arms swinging around, we see him moving around in the bottom of the frame, but who can tell what’s happening here? Then Mateo’s gone. When they run over to check out the hole situation and the whole situation, Mateo is still gone, noises like his screaming are coming up from the bowels of the earth, and there’s blood and huge scratch marks on the outer edge of the sinkhole. Are they from his trying to hold on for dear life, or are they from a giant bug monster demon dragging him to the depths of hell? Is it weird that the latter actually seems more plausible?

Back at St. Joseph’s, they tell La Russo and Ignatius that their findings are inconclusive. However, if they are really looking for a reason to shut the place down, their safety codes are not totally up to snuff. La Russo wonders if they can do so before the particle accelerator is officially opened … in 38 days.

Thankfully, David doesn’t keep everything to himself any longer. His friends clock his strange reaction to that number and ask him to spill once they’re alone. He had a dream, he says, about a warning that the world would end in 38 days with the birth of the Antichrist. Once again, Kristen cannot hold in her laughter. “I’m having a son in 38 days,” she tells them. Things are about to get wild.

Actually, things are already wild. While all of this particle-accelerator stuff is happening, something even stranger is going on right under Kristen’s nose. Remember how Leland and Sheryl kidnapped Andy and kept him catatonic in his closet? Remember that? Well, Andy gets a phone call from Leland, and good ol’ Lee plays him that version of “Feliz Navidad” we’ve heard coming from Leland’s toy. Andy is suddenly in a trance. Yes, he knows where he’s supposed to go, he tells Leland before hanging up and leaving his house. “Feliz Navidad” is a trigger noise for whatever the hell they did to Andy, and while I like the guy and want the best for him, that’s just hilarious.

Later, we find him back on that meat slab in the closet, fully catatonic again, with both Leland and Sheryl trying to brainwash him for their own benefit. Leland repeats, “Why is your wife fucking a priest,” to attempt to sow discord in their marriage, and Sheryl repeats, “You need Sheryl back in the house,” because, well, you can figure that one out. I hope at some point their commands start to get crossed and it leads to chaos. But, like, the fun kind. Not this kind, in which Andy shows up at the rectory and wants to start a fight with David for fucking his wife. I don’t want Kristen’s boys fighting like this!

David immediately calls Kristen to have a little check-in on their friendship in light of this accusation, which honestly is adorable. The cute part doesn’t last long because once David finally tells her why he’s worried that the two of them aren’t good anymore, she gets pissed. “Do I have feelings for you? Yeah! But my husband needs to shut the fuck up!” she yells before marching home, chugging a canned margarita and spitting some of it at a picture of her and Andy.

The next morning, she confronts him, and he continues to press her on how far she and David have gone. She tells him to shape up or ship out. In short, Leland’s plan worked spectacularly. Now, we’ll have to wait and see exactly what Leland wants out of this and how far he’ll go to get it.

    • Evil’s opening credits remain the best in the biz, and it isn’t even close.

    • Sister Andrea may be the busiest nun in New York. She has a revolving door of guests, including David and Lynn and, surprise, surprise, Kurt. Sister Andrea’s frustrated “Oh my God” when he busts in is hilarious on so many levels. I mean, we do know she’s tight with the big guy. I missed our girl!

    • Demon Kristen is back taunting David, and yes, she too drinks canned margs.

    • Still laughing about Ben’s homemade angel video in which he yells, “I guess I was wrong about science!” I love Ben with all my stupid little heart.

    • Evil’s got jokes! Lynn, who is sneaking out to chat with Sister Andrea about becoming a nun, would rather lie to her mom about sneaking around with her boyfriend than tell her the truth. What a world.

    • Wait, there’s more jokes. Not that Leland is ever the “good angel,” but I love his hovering over Kristen’s shoulder and trying to be gentle about the whole Antichrist-baby-against-her-will thing and then switching shoulders to be downright demonic about it.

    • Is there a creepier sentence in the history of sentences than “Your egg and my sperm, destined for each other from the beginning.”

How Long Is Paw Patrol Live? Answered | The Mary Sue

    [ad_1]

Paw Patrol Live is currently on tour, and if you’re a parent, you may be wondering how long you’ll be expected to sit through it.

Paw Patrol Live, a stage show featuring puppet versions of the dogs from the animated series Paw Patrol, is currently touring several cities in the southern U.S. and British Columbia. According to the show’s website, there are three separate shows currently playing in Minnesota, Florida, Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi, Georgia, and British Columbia.

The first show is called “Heroes Unite.” Here’s a description from the website:

Calling all good citizens! The PAW Patrol is yelping for help as they face their greatest challenge yet. Mayor Humdinger has dognapped Robo Dog and cloned him, causing chaos all over the world. It’s up to the pups to catch those clones, rescue Robo Dog and show that when the going gets “ruff,” lending a paw makes you the ultimate TOP HERO!

The second show on offer is “The Great Pirate Adventure”:

It’s Pirate Day in Adventure Bay, and Mayor Goodway is getting ready for a big celebration! But first, Ryder and his team of pirate pups must rescue Cap’n Turbot from a mysterious cavern. When they do, they also discover a secret pirate treasure map! The PAW Patrol set out over land and sea to find the treasure for Mayor Goodway’s celebration before Mayor Humdinger finds it first! The pups will need all paws on deck for this pirate adventure, including some help from the newest pup … Tracker!

Finally, the third show currently playing is “Race to the Rescue.”

It’s the day of the Great Adventure Bay Race between Adventure Bay’s Mayor Goodway and Foggy Bottom’s Mayor Humdinger, but Mayor Goodway is nowhere to be found. PAW Patrol Race to the Rescue! Ryder summons Marshall, Chase, Skye, Rubble, Rocky, Zuma and Everest to rescue Mayor Goodway and to run the race in her place.

Although the official website doesn’t give the runtime for each show, Undercover Tourist reports that “Heroes Unite” is about 90 minutes long. Parents can assume that the other two shows are more or less the same length.

For more information, see the Paw Patrol Live official website or Undercover Tourist.

  • Paramount CEO Bob Bakish to step down amid sale discussions

Paramount CEO Bob Bakish to step down amid sale discussions

    [ad_1]

Paramount Global said Monday that CEO Bob Bakish is stepping down from his role, a major management shift at the media and entertainment company as it considers a potential merger or sale.

Paramount said in a statement on Monday that it is creating an Office of the CEO to replace Bakish. The role will be filled by three Paramount Global executives: CBS CEO George Cheeks; Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks CEO Chris McCarthy; and Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins.

“I have tremendous confidence in George, Chris and Brian,” Shari Redstone, chair of the board, said in the statement. “They have both the ability to develop and execute on a new strategic plan and to work together as true partners.”

Paramount Global is the parent company of CBS News.

Bakish’s departure comes at a pivotal moment for Paramount, with the company exploring a merger and other deals with several potential partners. In recent weeks, the company has held exclusive discussions with Skydance Media, a media firm founded by David Ellison, the son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, according to published reports.

The discussions are complicated by Paramount’s ownership structure, as Shari Redstone — the daughter of the late company founder Sumner Redstone — effectively controls 77% of its voting shares. Under a proposed deal with Ellison, Redstone would sell her voting stake to Skydance for $2 billion, while other Paramount shareholders would receive stock in a newly merged company, the Journal reported.

The company didn’t address its merger discussions in the statement, although the board of directors said it is looking “forward to working with George, Chris and Brian as they execute on key initiatives to enhance performance and value creation at Paramount Global.”

Bakish’s exit marks the end of a long career at Paramount that began in 1997 at Viacom, the movie studio’s predecessor company. He was eventually tapped to lead Viacom, and then oversaw the merger of Viacom and CBS in 2019. In 2022, ViacomCBS changed its name to Paramount Global.

In an email sent to Paramount Global employees, Bakish said, “When I was asked to serve as interim CEO in 2016, I thought it would be a month-long gig. Seven years later, I can truly say the opportunity to lead this incredible company has been an unexpected but most welcome gift, and the greatest honor of my professional life.”

Separately, Paramount reported a first-quarter loss of $554 million, significantly narrower than its $1.12 billion loss in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 6% to $7.69 billion, buoyed by strong advertising demand for CBS’ Super Bowl broadcast in February as well as the addition of 3.7 million new subscribers to the Paramount+ streaming service.

The company said Paramount+ ended the quarter with 71 million subscribers, while the service’s loss narrowed to $286 million, compared with $511 million in the year-earlier period.

‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ Star David Oyelowo, Showrunner Chad Feehan: Series Is More About Family Than Westerns — Contenders TV Contenders TV

    [ad_1]

Star and executive producer David Oyelowo and Lawmen: Bass Reeves creator, showrunner and executive producer Chad Feehan said Reeves’ family values were what made him stand out. Oyelowo plays Reeves, a U.S. Marshal after the abolition of slavery.

    Related Stories

“The way in for a global audience should be not just appealing to the sensibility of people who love westerns but the family,” Oyelowo said at Contenders TV. “Essentially a Black family which is also something you never see in this time period. As we discussed this, we felt the universal element was going to be the work-life balance as something that everyone can relate to.”

Oyelowo said that Reeves was always trying to get back to his family after his arrests. Reeves’ family values also influenced one of the show’s most memorable antagonists, Esau Pierce (Barry Pepper). Feehan said Pierce represents the antithesis of Reeves.

“The idea was for me was what happens if Bass Reeves walks into Col Kurtz’s lair,” Feehan said. “I felt that was the best opposition for Bass who’s a deeply religious character and a deeply righteous man to go against somebody who has no moral code.”

Oyelowo pitched the show twice before in 2015 and 2017. He had been preparing to play Reeves the whole time.

“The horse riding, the dialect work, working on every aspect alongside Chad who just did the most extraordinary job of bringing this character to life because he had a 32 year career as a lawman,” Oyelowo said. “No matter how brutal what we were doing was, it was always a joy.”

The final iteration of Lawmen: Bass Reeves boasts Taylor Sheridan as an executive producer. Oyelowo credited Sheridan with removing some of the barriers he faced the first two times.

“Taylor, in such an impressive way, corralled an audience with Yellowstone and that has spun out into amazing shows like 1883 and 1923, [showed] there is an indisputable audience for this,” Oyelowo said. And he was proven right. “The thing I’m most proud of with this show is the Lawmen: Bass Reeves was the most watched show globally on Paramount+ last year.”

Reeves may have now opened the door for other unheralded historical figures. Should the show be renewed for a second season, Feehan confirmed plans to pass the torch.

“If there is another season of Lawmen, it will focus on a new lawman or law woman,” Feehan said. “There are several figures in history much like Bass who deserve their day in the sun. As much as it pains me that this marriage is taking a hiatus, that is the reality.”

Here’s What Was Reported About The ‘Scary Movie’ Franchise & Its Return

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount unveiled its plans for the franchise’s return at CinemaCon on Thursday, April 11. The company has reportedly teamed up with production and distribution company Miramax for the “new take on the franchise.”

Additionally, the outlet reports Miramax “will finance” the franchise’s sequel while “Paramount will distribute.”

Furthermore, the outlet adds that Neal H. Moritz, the producer for the ‘Fast & Furious film franchise, will produce the latest ‘Scary Movie.’

Lastly, it remains unclear whether the sequel will feature the franchise’s original stars, have an entirely new cast, or a mix of original and new actors. PEOPLE notes that the franchise’s initial film, which was released in 2000, starred actors such as Regina Hall, Anna Faris, Shawn, and Marlon Wayans.

Paramount reportedly did not share a release date for the sequel, per The Hollywood Reporter. However, the latest installment in the ‘Scary Movie’ franchise is expected to be released sometime in 2025.

Reboot Reports About THIS Television Show Also Surfaced Earlier This Month

Fans of the television series and movies from the early 2000s also received more good news earlier this month. As The Shade Room previously reported, production company 51 Minds revealed its plans to reboot the former competitive dating series, ‘Flavor of Love.’

The show aired between 2006 and 2008 and has spawned viral, meme-able moments that still keep the internet in a chokehold to date.

Ultimately, the company revealed that production is working with the show’s former bachelor, Flavor Flav, to “reimagine” the series.

“We’re in the process of working with Flavor Flav to reimagine what Flavor of Love can feel like in this in this decade, which is very different. The project is really fun, a comedy in the dating space,” Julie Pizzi, President of Bunim/Murray Productions and 51 Minds, explained to Deadline earlier this month.

However, they are adding a twist this time around.

David Ayer to Direct Paramount’s Survival Thriller ‘Heart of the Beast’ From Producer Damien Chazelle

    [ad_1]

David Ayer is following up the success of The Beekeeper with a new dramatic thriller from producer Damien Chazelle.

Ayer is set to direct Paramount Pictures’ Heart of the Beast from a script by Cameron Alexander. The feature, which has been in development since 2017, follows a former Navy SEAL and his combat dog amid their attempt to find civilization after getting stranded deep in the Alaskan terrain.

Producers include Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton of Wild Chickens Productions, in addition to Ayer and Chris Long of Cedar Park Entertainment.

Ayer most recently helmed Amazon MGM Studios’ The Beekeeper, the Jason Statham-led thriller that surpassed $150 million at the global box office. The filmmaker, who wrote Training Day and worked on the script for The Fast and the Furious, has previously directed Fury, Suicide Squad and Bright.

Chazelle’s directing credits include Whiplash, La La Land, First Man and Babylon. During a recent interview with Ben Mankiewicz on the podcast Talking Pictures, Chazelle addressed his filmmaking future after the underperformance of 2022’s Babylon, which starred Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.

“Certainly, in financial terms, Babylon didn’t work at all,” said Chazelle, who mentioned that he was working on a new script. “You try to not have that affect what you’re doing creatively, but, at some level, it can’t help but affect it. But maybe that’s OK? I have [a] very mixed mind about it. Who knows? Maybe I won’t be able to get this one made. I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Ayer is represented by WME and Sloane Offer. Chazelle is repped by WME and attorney Don Steele.

    Who is Usher?

    Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Born Usher Raymond IV, the 45-year-old singer, dancer, actor, producer and philanthropist is known to fans as Usher. The Texas native grew up in Chattanooga, TN, where he was encouraged by his mother, Jonetta Patton, to join a local church youth choir. After hearing him sing, Usher’s grandmother encouraged him to sing professionally.

The family later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, hoping the city would provide more opportunity for the budding singer.  A performance on the TV talent search show “Star Search” helped earn Usher a meeting with famed LaFace Records owner L.A. Reid, who signed the young singer.

Usher went on to become a top recording artist who has won eight Grammy Awards, 18 Billboard Music Awards, 12 Soul Train Music Awards and eight American Music Awards. Usher has been inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has received both the Freedom Award and President’s Volunteer Service Award for his philanthropic work.

In addition to his successful music career and his charitable efforts, Usher served as a judge on NBC’s “The Voice” and has appeared in such films as “Scary Movie 5”, “Muppets Most Wanted” and “The Incredibles 2.”

Usher is the father of four children.

What are Usher’s most popular songs?

Known for swoon-worthy hits like “U Remind Me” and iconic dance hits like “Yeah!” (featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris), it’s no wonder Usher has nine Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles. Often called “The King of R&B,” the 45-year-old crooner has been performing live since he was 15 years old.

Usher’s other top hits include “Nice & Slow,” “You Make Me Wanna…,” “U Got It Bad,” “U Don’t Have To Call,” “Burn,” “There Goes My Baby,” “Love In This Club” (featuring Young Jeezy), “OMG” (featuring will.i.am),  “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and “My Boo”(with Alicia Keys).

Paramount man accused of organizing street takeovers in SoCal arrested

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles police announced Thursday the arrest of a man accused of being one of the largest street takeover organizers in the Southland.

Paramount resident Erick Romero Quintana, 20, was arrested and faces charges that include conspiracy for organizing several street takeover events, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. His arrest comes as a collaboration between LAPD, the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

LAPD said Quintana has more than 70,000 followers on social media and used his platform to coordinate unlawful events throughout Southern California. The takeovers allegedly organized by Quintana led to smash-and-grab robberies, vehicle thefts and violent crimes, police said.

It is unclear if the suspect has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is encouraged to contact LAPD’s Street Racing Task Force at 213-833-3746. Anonymous tips can be made by contacting Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

  • The Tiger’s Apprentice Review: A Rushed Adventure

The Tiger’s Apprentice Review: A Rushed Adventure

    [ad_1]

When you think of the best animation studios in Hollywood, your mind likely does not go straight to Paramount Animation. Ever since the Oscar-nominated Anomalisa, this studio has found itself languishing in box office failure with Monster Trucks, Sherlock Gnomes, and Wonder Park. It’s no wonder their latest films have gone either direct to VOD or streaming on Paramount+. The Tiger’s Apprentice is the latest in the studio’s feeble attempts to make a strong impression on the genre, with wonderful intentions behind this film that get lost in the execution.

Based on Laurence Yep’s 2023 novel, this movie follows Tom Lee (Brandon Soo Hoo), a Chinese-American boy who must protect a phoenix egg. As an Asian-American person, it’s always great to see this culture represented onscreen. The protagonist looks and dresses like me. There’s a lot about this movie that I should have loved, but The Tiger’s Apprentice falters due to how familiar it feels. It’s an amalgamation of every storyline and character trope that you’ve seen in other films, with nothing unique about it besides how it explores Chinese culture. Although it’s fun to showcase Chinese people through the lens of a superhero film, there isn’t enough here to distinguish it from what you’ve seen.

There’s a lot here that feels like the most simple, traditional execution of a story. An early scene features Tom getting roughed up by a bully in school when he suddenly uses a superpower to fend him off. Soon after, he hangs out with a girl he might have a crush on. If any of this sounds familiar, it’s because you already saw it in the 2002 Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire. The storyline afterward surrounds Tom being given an object of supreme magical power and needing to protect it from the villains who are after it. If this sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve seen it in tons of movies, including last year’s Blue Beetle.

Soon enough, Tom finds himself on an adventure with a more experienced mentor, Mr. Hu (Henry Golding). If this sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve seen it in Star Wars, The Matrix, and in perhaps the most accurate comparison, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. They butt heads, exchange some banter, and eventually form a bond. This is the type of movie that does everything you expect but with much less of the quality. Part of that is the fact that this film is a mere 83 minutes long, including credits. When you have a film that goes by that fast, you’re basically just hopping from story beat to action sequence to story beat without slowing down to breathe.

That prevents the characters from feeling as if they have complete journeys. The so-called bond that forms between Tom and Hu does not land, which is an issue because there are story beats that ask you to really care about these two. Unfortunately, they are no Miles Morales and Peter B. Parker. Furthermore, Tom’s relationship with a possible love interest never gets the treatment it deserves, with that storyline also feeling rushed and unsatisfactory. We don’t really see their relationship grow and evolve in a meaningful way either because the movie is breezing by.

Fortunately, there are a few cultural details here that are fun to see. From the characters drinking boba together to the fights, which feel inspired by both modern superhero fare and classic wuxia. There are bits of Mandarin all over this movie, and one moment that resonated with me was when the more fluent speakers jokingly corrected Tom’s pronunciation of a certain word. The stakes in The Tiger’s Apprentice feel high but vague. Before you know it, we’re in our big final battle, and it’s never a boring movie. This film can be entertaining often, but the comedy isn’t as strong as it should have been, and the drama falls short as well. There are moments that are supposed to be crowd-pleasing that end up cringe-worthy instead. To add salt to the wound, some of the voice performances can be a bit flat.

But The Tiger’s Apprentice offers a stacked cast. We have Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh as Loo. She really commits to her villainous role here. Throw in Lucy Liu, Henry Golding, Brandon Soo Hoo, Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh, Golden Globe failure Jo Koy, Sherry Cola from last year’s Joy Ride, Leah Lewis from last year’s Elemental, Greta Lee from last year’s Past Lives, and more. It seems like the only Asians missing from this cast are Awkwafina and Randall Park. Most of the performances in this ensemble are fine, but there isn’t always much on the page. The film introduces the idea of having a group of characters who exist as the 12 zodiac animals. It’s not dissimilar to the Spider-People from the Spider-Verse series, but it doesn’t work as well here because the characters generally don’t feel distinct, nor are they particularly funny.

All in all, The Tiger’s Apprentice is a predictable movie that never packs the punch it should have, even if it offers middling entertainment in its animated superhero action sequences.

    SCORE: 5/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 5 equates to “Mediocre.” The positives and negatives wind up negating each other, making it a wash.

Watch NFL football live with a digital HDTV antenna

    digital-antenna-update.png

    Antenna

If you cut the cord with your cable company, you can still watch the NFL on TV with an affordable indoor antenna, which pulls in local over-the-air HDYC channels such as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, PBS, Univision and more. Here’s the kicker: Unlike with cable TV, there’s no monthly charge.

Those who live in a partially blocked-off area (those near mountains or in first-floor apartments), a digital TV antenna may not pick up a good signal — or any signal at all. But for many homes, a digital TV antenna is an inexpensive way to watch live sports without paying a monthly fee to a cable company. Indoor TV antennas can also provide some much-needed TV backup if a storm knocks out your cable or satellite dish.

This amplified digital antenna can receive hundreds of HD TV channels, including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, Fox and Univision. And it can filter out cellular and FM signals. It receives signals in 360 degrees and delivers a high-quality picture in 4K, UHD and 1080 HDTV. A 16-foot digital coax cable is included. This bestselling Amazon antenna is regularly priced around $23, but we’ve seen it for sale as low as $15.

If you’re waiting for the Chiefs vs. Ravens kickoff, now is a great time to check out Amazon’s NFL Fan Shop. The Amazon NFL Fan Shop is filled to the brim with officially licensed fan gear. You’ll find jerseys, hats, flags, T-shirts, hoodies and more so you can properly rep your favorite team. There are plenty of great deals live at Amazon, too, including big deals on soundbars and TVs for watching football.

Tap the button below to head directly to the NFL Fan Shop page on Amazon and select your favorite team.

Who has the edge in the Chiefs vs. Ravens game?

According to our sister site, CBS Sports, the Ravens are favorites by 3.5 points.

Expect two stellar games of Sunday football starting with the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Baltimore Ravens AFC Championship Game on CBS. It will be followed by the Detroit Lions vs. San Francisco 49ers NFC Championship Game on Fox.

The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs hope to win back-to-back Super Bowl victories, but they’ll have to get past Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens this weekend first. The last football franchise to win back-to-back Super Bowl championships was the New England Patriots, who won the Super Bowl in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

This is the Chiefs sixth straight year appearing in the AFC Championship Game. Sunday’s game will be the first-ever AFC Championship Game played at M&T Bank Stadium.

Later on Sunday, the Detroit Lions face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Sunday’s game marks the Lions’ first appearance in the NFC Championships since 1992. Levi’s Stadium will play host to Sunday’s showdown.

  • Showbiz Stocks 2023: Tech Surges, Big Media Companies Weather Strikes And Streaming Gets A Reboot

Showbiz Stocks 2023: Tech Surges, Big Media Companies Weather Strikes And Streaming Gets A Reboot

    [ad_1]

Roku was a champ. Lionsgate surged and Netflix jumped. Tech shares went bananas in 2023. Big media stocks had a mixed year of transition dominated by Hollywood strikes with linear television declines and streaming losses.

Paramount fell. Disney and Fox were basically flat on the year. Giants Comcast and Sony, which both have other businesses like broadband or games and music, both had nice runs. Warner Bros Discovery gained a bit. All are pushing for profitability in streaming and progress there will influence how the stocks perform in 2024.

Relatively speaking, 2023 was a real bonanza compared with a truly dismal 2022 when only two – that’s two – media stocks rose for the year: WWE (now part of TKO Group) and Nexstar.

It was a surprisingly good 2023 for stocks overall with the S&P 500 closing up more than 24% for the year. Investors shrugged off high interest rates and inflation, recession fears, threats of a government shutdown, a brief banking crisis and international strife, turning around a year initially expected to be rather glum for markets.

Tech in particular brought the heat, fueled in large part by an AI frenzy. The famous FAANG group of stocks — Facebook (now Meta), Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google (now Alphabet) — has morphed into The Magnificent Seven. Newly coined this year by an analyst (from the movie), it’s Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Invidia and Tesla. This gang contributed significantly to overall gains. Shares of adjacent tech from Snap to Spotify also rallied.

Exhibitors were split to lower amid angst at 2024’s box office prospects. Broadcast stocks fell, with advertising soft but set for a political tsunami.

And the year year wrapped with a flourish of M&A chatter that hasn’t yet but could also buoy shares in 2024. It doesn’t hurt that the Federal Reserve indicated it may finally cut interest rates in 2024 after 11 hikes over the last two years.

    A Closer Look

Roku was king of media in 2023, up 119%.

Remember back in March when the company worriedly announced that it had a quarter of its cash at Silicon Valley Bank, which wiped out in the biggest bank collapse since 2008. Disaster was averted when the FDIC agreed to fully guarantee all deposits and Roku took it from there. The business is benefitting as television ad dollars shift from linear to digital, as it expands overseas and as it sells lots of branded Smart TVs. May be a potential takeover target.

Disney, the only showbiz stock in the 30-member DJIA, nosed up slightly for the year. That’s well off its high for the year of $110 in January, when the market was flushed with enthusiasm at CEO Bob Iger’s return. But these are complicated times with linear television in steady decline, streaming still in the red and Disney facing a string of box office underachievers.

Iger notably acquired the rest of Hulu from Comcast, paying a previously agreed upon $8.6 billion minimum. It may owe more as both sides have teams working to establish a valuation. He’s waffled a bit on entertaining offers for ABC and linear networks and is looking for a strategic partner for ESPN ahead of an eventual streaming launch. Disney is reportedly doing a deal with Reliance for its assets in India.

Wall Streeters hope the new year will bring an update on succession planning, and perhaps on an NBA contract renewal. One analyst says he’s been getting lots of client calls on Disney recently. “They’ll say things like, ‘I used to own Disney. I just feel like it could be an interesting stock. There are so many moving parts right now, could you just get me up to speed?’”

It looks like the company will enter 2024 facing a proxy fight with activist investor Nelson Peltz, who wants two seats on the board — for himself and former Disney CFO Jay Rasulo. Peltz launched a similar adversarial campaign last year but backed off in February before a showdown at the annual meeting.

Warner Bros Discovery is up about 10% but off its high and from the $24 it traded at when Discovery and Warner Media merged in April 2022. CEO David Zaslav is focused on boosting cash flow and paying down the company’s massive debt, which stood at $45.3 billion at the end of the September quarter. Investors did not love that quarter, spooked in particular by a glum advertising outlook.

The ad market seems to have entered a new phase not beneficial for legacy media, which is the loss of pricing power, says one analyst. “Historically, as linear TV audiences shrunk, big companies could offset that by raising the prices they charged advertisers for the remaining viewers. In the last year, that game seems to have failed,” unless it’s sports.

With the April 8 two-year anniversary of the Discovery-Warner Media merger, WBD can explore deals without a big tax penalty. Zaslav has had conversations with Paramount’s controlling shareholder Shari Redstone and CEO Bob Bakish about a possible deal. Warners could also be a seller but that’s hard too, in part due to its huge stable of legacy cable networks.

Warner Bros Studio and HBO “are good businesses with solid creative trajectories, and, to us, the heart of the company,” said one analyst.

Paramount Global, meanwhile, fell 17%. It’s financially squeezed so seen as likeliest to do a deal sooner rather than later. Conversations with Zaslav as well as with Skydance Media CEO David Ellison have touched on both an outright sale as well as the possibility of Redstone selling her interest in NAI, the family holding company that houses her Paramount stock. Regular Paramount shareholders would not be getting any premium for their shares in that scenario, maybe one reason deal talk has not moved the needle on the stock. Skydance would not face regulatory hurdles.

Among big cap entertainment stocks, Netflix gained 63%. Studios are newly willing to license shows. It has stronger balance sheet than most of big media and a larger backlog of unreleased content of anyone but Disney, all of it dedicated to streaming. It has added an advertising tier and is seeing upside from a crackdown on password sharing.

Smaller Lionsgate had a fantastic run, up a whopping 88% as it ended the year closing the acquisition of eOne from Hasbro and announcing plans to combine the studio with a SPAC early next year in a separation from Starz that it hopes will unlock value.

Fox is still well liked by some analysts — no streaming losses and a focus on live sports and news. But investors like growth and some wonder about the end game. “It just is what it is,” said one. With linear television shrinking and the cost of sports rights rising, “What’s the narrative?”

Fox is facing a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit by a second voting machine company, Smartmatic. Earlier this year, it agreed to an $800 million settlement just before trial in a first suit brought by Dominion Voting Systems.

In exhibition, the movie theater gig is still a tough one and the strikes disrupted production, pushing some big films back, which will slow the pace of new release in 2024. Cinema stocks ended the year mixed, with Cinemark – the No. 3 chain — showing sharp gains. The worlds’ biggest exhibitor AMC Entertainment plunged, but analysts don’t mind. It’s “finally trading roughly in line with its pre-meme historical multiple,” said one.
