Activists have unfurled a huge image of the killed Palestinian girl Hind Rajab on the beach in the Spanish city of Barcelona on the second anniversary of her death in the Gaza Strip.
The then 5-year-old girl was believed to have been killed during an Israeli army operation. However, the Israeli army has not yet confirmed this and has stated that the incident is under investigation.
Audio recordings, described as authentic, of a phone call between the already injured Hind and volunteers from the Palestinian Red Crescent, in which she repeatedly pleaded for help, caused worldwide shock.
Several hundred people participated in the Avaaz campaign on Thursday under the motto “Free the Children of Gaza,” including the little girl’s mother, Wissam Hamada.
“I am here to carry on the voice of Hind Rajab – and the voice of the children of Gaza, who cannot scream, who are not heard,” she said, according to Avaaz. The children of Gaza, she added, are not asking for pity but are demanding their right to live.
Girl initially survived severely injured
The war was triggered by the massacre carried out by the Palestinian militant organization Hamas and other extremist groups from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, in Israel, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths and more than 250 people being abducted to the coastal strip.
Hind died after the car in which she was fleeing with relatives from Israeli attacks was shot at; she initially survived severely injured and was heard in the audio recordings of an emergency call, pleading for help for hours before she died.
