  • Paddy McGuinness on secret mental health battle: ‘I think your mind is a powerful tool’

This weekend, Paddy McGuinness is back on the small screen for more Christmassy fun, as he and Cherry Healey appear in a festive episode of Inside The Christmas Factory.

In the programme, viewers will get the chance to see the pair explore the world of festive confections.

Paddy, who recently quit as host of Tempting Fortune, is known for his upbeat personality, wicked humour and bags of charm. However, things haven’t been easy for the TV personality. In fact, he previously opened up about his battle with depression…

    Paddy McGuinness on depression

In a September interview on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, Paddy admitted that he didn’t even realise he had depression.

“Sometimes I’d be in the dressing room with something on the phone at home and stressing about it,” he recounted. “Then you’d go out there and you’d do the show and you’d come off, and I’d be knackered because I’d mentally burnt out.”

He added that his mind “magnified” his problems and that it could make “everything worse”.

“Every problem is magnified a million times, and I was always going to the worst case scenario of everything,” he said.

For Paddy, it was the “little things” that “helped depression come to a front”.

He said: “They’re all little chinks in the armour that were slowly being eroded that I didn’t realise.

“But again, on the positive, the job is brilliant for then talking about things because you’re going to reach more people and you’re going to make more people aware, so I take the positives out of things like that.”

Paddy started ‘resenting’ making people laugh

For Paddy, things came to a head when he realised he started “resenting” his fans.

“I started resenting being in front of a crowd of people and making them laugh because I used to think, it’s alright for you lot, but I’m going home feeling like this,” he admitted in a 2023 appearance on the Monday Mile podcast.

Another thing he noted was how he became quick to anger. “I’ve never been that much of a person losing my temper but I could feel myself in certain situations getting wound up quicker and I just thought, that’s not me,” he explained.

“I wasn’t going round throwing cups at the [bleep]ing wall and shouting, but I could feel myself feeling angry straight away, and I shouldn’t be feeling that.”

For Paddy, it took him some time to get better. He tried therapy numerous times without success. But after consulting with a third professional, he finally found a treatment that worked for him.

You can catch Paddy on Inside The Christmas Factory on December 13 at 1pm on BBC One and iPlayer.

Paddy McGuinness has landed a new BBC Radio 2 show – but not everyone is happy.

The comedian is set to begin hosting his own show on the iconic radio station in June.

Paddy McGuinness confirmed for new BBC Radio 2 show

Earlier today (Tuesday, April 2), it was announced that Michael Ball would be replacing the late Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2.

Steve Wright hosted the Love Song’s show on BBC Radio 2 on Sundays. Following his death, Michael Ball will be hosting the show from June onwards.

Michael previously hosted the 11am to 1pm slot on the radio station. His new show will be in the 9am until 11am slot.

The BBC announced today that Paddy would be taking on Michael’s old slot with a show of his own, coming this June.

“I’ve loved keeping Rylan’s seat warm on Saturday afternoons and returning to the airwaves over Easter. To be given my very own regular show on the legendary Radio 2 is a dream come true,” Paddy said.

However, some fans weren’t as excited by the news. Paddy, of course, hosted Top Gear and A Question of Sport – both of which no longer air.

“Has Paddy McGuinness got photos of senior BBC execs in compromising positions or something? What is it with him? Nice bloke but he was a bit irritating on Top Gear and he destroyed A Question of Sport,” one fan tweeted.

“McGuinness is a wrecking ball put him anywhere and he destroys it,” another grumbled.

“Paddy bloody McGuiness, Jesus? What’s he got on the BBC. That bloody grating voice!” a third wrote.

“McGuinness buggers everything he touches, up? I give him 3 months,” another said.

However, some fans were happy with the news. “I’ve loved listening to Paddy recently – very happy to read this,” one fan said.

Paddy hits back at ‘straight up lies’

Last month, Paddy was forced to hit back at claims he’d made Christine McGuinness sign a gagging order amid their divorce battle.

“Oh my days, these cheeky little scamps are at it again. Now, I don’t mind them writing lies and rubbish about TV work, that’s all part of the job, you get used to that over the years. But this kind of thing, come on, play the game you lot, be better,” he said in a video.

“Two lots of lawyers they contacted, two lots of lawyers said: ‘absolutely categorically, this has never been done’. No NDAs, no nothing. Me and Christine were talking about it this morning, it’s ridiculous now,” he then continued.

“Ruined our Sunday, sun’s shining and now we’ve got to deal with this.”
