    A man was taken into custody late Tuesday after driving his car into a security barrier outside the White House, authorities said.The U. S. Secret Service said the man crashed into the security gate at a White House entrance at 10:37 p.m. on Tuesday. The man was immediately arrested by officers from the Secret Service’s uniformed division, the agency said.Investigators searched his car and deemed it to be safe, Secret Service officials said in a statement.Authorities did not immediately provide any additional information about the crash, the driver’s identity, or any potential motivation.

  • Dozens of ‘No Kings’ protests will be held across Los Angeles County

    Building on the “No Kings” protests in June, organizations across the United States, including those in Southern California, are once again rallying and marching Saturday to protest against the Trump administration.

    On June 14, more than 50 million people across all 50 states joined in one of the largest single-day protests against “President Trump’s authoritarianism,” according to Studio City Rising, a local event organizer.

    The latest “No Kings” rallies and marches will take place in dozens of Los Angeles County locations.

    “Our community is peacefully coming together to push back against President Trump’s violent, authoritarian actions,” said Studio City Rising. “We’re standing with our neighbors and residents from all over our city to share a simple resolved message: We don’t do dictators or kings in America. Our diversity is our strength and empathy is our superpower.”

    The national event is backed by groups that include the American Civil Liberties Union, American Federation of Teachers, Common Defense, 50501 Movement, Human Rights Campaign, Indivisible, League of Conservation Voters, MoveOn, National Nurses United, Public Citizen and Service Employees International Union.

    Here is an alphabetical list of 30 of the “No Kings” rallies in Los Angeles County, the times and locations, along with notes for attendees.

    Alhambra
    When: 10 a.m. to noon
    Where: Alhambra Park, 500 N. Palm Ave.
    Event notes: Attendees will gather at the park on the corner of Alhambra Road and North Palm Avenue. There will be access to restrooms.

    Beverly Hills
    When: 2 to 4 p.m.
    Where: Along Olympic Boulevard at Roxbury Park, 471 South Roxbury Drive
    Event notes: Nearby on-street parking is available. Organizers encourage attendees to carpool to avoid any parking problems.

    Burbank
    When: 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
    Where: Abraham Lincoln Park, 300 N. Buena Vista St.
    Event notes: Attendees will have access to restrooms. The event will take place mainly on flat ground.

    Covina
    When: 4 to 7 p.m.
    Where: Heritage Plaza Park, 400 N. Citrus Ave.
    Event notes: Attendees will have access to bathrooms and the rally will take place mainly on flat ground.

    El Segundo
    When: 10 a.m. to noon
    Where: Main Street and East Imperial Avenue
    Event notes: Organizers say this rally is slated to be a family-friendly, dog-friendly and nonviolent community event. Attendees are asked to stay on the grassy areas and off of the roads.

    Glendale
    When: noon to 2 p.m.
    Where: Public plaza outside the Social Security Office, 225 W. Broadway
    Event notes: The event will take place mainly on flat ground.

    La Habra

    Lakewood

    Event notes: Attendees are asked to meet in front of Lakewood City Hall at noon for a quick introduction speech along with a reading of the poem, “Bread and Roses” by James Oppenheim. Accommodations such as water and earplugs will be available at the first aid table.

    Event notes: Education Workers including school custodians, teachers, special education assistants, food service workers, principals, school maintenance workers, child care providers and others will rally and march from the headquarters of the Los Angeles Unified School District to join the massive “No Kings” rally in downtown Los Angeles.

    Event notes: Event hosts say parking is available at the beach parking lots and attendees can walk over the Montana Avenue or Idaho Avenue bridge to the rally.   • Pyrite fire erupts in Inland Empire, forcing evacuations near Jurupa Valley

    A brush fire ignited Friday evening near Jurupa Valley, prompting evacuation orders in the nearby communities of Jurupa Hills and Sunnyslope.

    Dubbed the Pyrite fire, it was reported at 5:19 p.m. as a 15-acre vegetation fire burning in “light flashy fuels” near Pyrite Street and Granite Hills Drive, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Riverside Unit.

    The blaze had grown to 200 acres by 8 p.m., leading authorities to expand evacuation warnings as hand crews and firefighting helicopters worked to combat the flames. A map of affected areas can be viewed here.

    An evacuation center has been set up at Jurupa Valley High School, 10551 Bellegrave Ave. An animal shelter is located at 6851 Van Buren Boulevard.

    Nearly 300 firefighting personnel were assigned to the incident, alongside 40 engines, two helicopters and two water tenders, according to Cal Fire.

    Throughout the evening, the fire burned toward the San Bernardino County border, where residents in the nearby city of Fontana could clearly see the flames burning from the hillside.

    Shawn Millerick, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, urged Fontana residents not to panic as crews were making “really good progress” slowing the forward progression of the fire. So far no evacuation warnings or orders have been issued for the Fontana area.

    The Fontana Police Department said that Sierra Avenue will be closed from Jurupa Avenue to Armstrong Road to allow fire crews to access the burn zone.

    “At this time, Fontana residents are not impacted, but smoke may still be visible throughout the region,” the department said. “Stay alert and follow official updates for any changes.”

    A man was arrested after stealing a car in East Los Angeles with three children inside, then crashing it in Malibu during a police pursuit Friday evening, officials confirmed.

    The car, a light-colored sedan, was left running with three children inside at a 7-Eleven on East Olympic Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A stranger jumped inside the idling vehicle and took off at around 6:38 p.m.

    The California Highway Patrol began pursuing the vehicle minutes later, traveling westbound on the 10 Freeway at Maple Avenue in Los Angeles, the agency confirmed.

    The chase continued until roughly 7:34 p.m., when the sedan appeared to T-bone a light-colored SUV at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Kanan Dume Road in Malibu.

    Following the crash, live footage broadcast from a news helicopter showed the suspect fleeing the scene barefoot and shedding layers of clothes. The man ran through a residential area into a field before being arrested.

    Four people at the scene were taken to a hospital — three by helicopter and one by ambulance, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Three were listed with minor-to-moderate injuries, but no condition was available for the fourth person.

    It is unclear how seriously injured the children were, but they were conscious and breathing after the crash as paramedics removed them from the vehicle, KTLA-TV reported.

    The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

    A helicopter halts traffic on the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles

    A helicopter made an emergency landing on the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles on Thursday night, bringing southbound traffic to a halt for hours.

    The California Highway Patrol received a report at 8:25 p.m. from the craft’s pilot, who said he was forced down by a loss of power, CHP Officer Sean Lough told The Times.

    Besides the pilot, two passengers were aboard the private helicopter. No injuries were reported.

    All southbound lanes were closed from Century Boulevard to the 105 Freeway, Lough said.

    The CHP was coordinating with the pilot and two heavy-duty tow trucks to remove the aircraft. Lough said the lanes were expected to reopen shortly before 11 p.m.

    KCAL-TV reported that Flight Tracker showed that the flight originated at Hawthorne Municipal Airport about 7:34 p.m.

    SACRAMENTO — 

    A human-caused brush fire near San Jacinto had grown hundreds of acres by Sunday evening, leading to evacuation warnings and sending six firefighters to local hospitals, according to fire officials.

    Fire crews first responded to the vegetation fire at 2:17 p.m. near Soboba and Gilman Springs roads in Riverside County.

    Several firefighters were taken to area hospitals on Sunday amid the Riverside County brush fire, which was holding at 650 acres at 8:30 p.m.

    By 8:30 p.m., the blaze, dubbed the Record fire, had spread to 650 acres and remained uncontained.

    “Out of an abundance of caution,” the Riverside County Fire Department said Sunday evening, “six firefighters have been transported to area hospitals with minor medical symptoms.”

    The department issued evacuation warnings that remained in effect late Sunday night.

    Cal Fire said the fire was human-caused by did not provide any specifics. The agency said the investigation remained ongoing.

    The evacuations were issued in the Poppet Flats region, according to fire officials. That area includes the Silent Valley Club RV resort. A map of the area covered by the evacuation warning can be found here.
