  • I Won’t Be Caught Dead Wearing Denim in The Summer—20 Outfits I’d Try Instead

I Won’t Be Caught Dead Wearing Denim in The Summer—20 Outfits I’d Try Instead

    [ad_1]

Controversial take for you… denim is the worst thing you can wear in the summer. Don’t get me wrong; it’s essential to any wardrobe. But when it’s hot outside, the last thing you want to wear is anything ultra-form-fitting (sorry, skinny jeans). After all, who’s clamoring to have beads of sweat roll down their legs because they’re squeezed into a pair of jeans like a sausage? If that makes you happy, I love that for you. Personally, though, there’s nothing more hellish than walking around New York City’s humid streets in denim.

And I’m guessing that if you clicked on this article, you, too, share these sentiments. With record-breaking heatwaves worldwide, choosing what to wear isn’t just a matter of personal preferences but physical safety. Heat exhaustion is no joke, and while there are other things you can do to stay safe, a simple way to mitigate risks is through your clothing. You not only want to choose pieces made from lightweight materials but avoid denser textiles that trap heat—looking at you, denim.

So what can one wear when it’s basically an oven outside? In an effort to serve humanity (or at least myself), I set out in search of styling alternatives to wearing denim. After hours of image research, I found 20 summer outfit ideas without jeans that will keep you looking stylish without breaking a sweat. Plus, I shopped out the key pieces you’ll need to create the looks at home.

This One “Ugly” Summer Trend Was Low on My Buy List Until I Saw These 8 Outfits

    [ad_1]

Whether you like it or not, Bermuda shorts are back and better than ever. This once ill-fated ’00s trend, often associated with Adam Sandler, has returned to the closets of fashion people everywhere. I won’t lie; I wasn’t into this trend at first. Sure, dadcore is a cool concept, and jorts are at the center of many model-off-duty outfits, but there’s no way they actually look cool when real people wear them… right? Wrong.

While scouring the internet for office-appropriate linen shorts and lightweight cutoffs, I kept seeing more and more fashion people embracing denim Bermuda shorts and looking chic. After digging up a pair from the back of my closet and taking them for a spin with a few re-created outfits I pulled from Pinterest and Instagram, I think I’ve joined the jorts fan club.

My takeaway? The key to an appealing Bermuda shorts outfit lies in proper styling. From polished French basics to It girl-approved accessories, there’s a way to make denim Bermuda shorts look cool again. If that isn’t something to celebrate, I don’t know what is.

Browse our favorite denim Bermuda shorts below. Then shop for the components you need to style them.

Lazy Dressing Is In—30 Easy Outfits That Look Hard But Require Zero Effort

    [ad_1]

As someone with a proclivity for laziness, I’ve been forced to take up certain habits designed to force productivity. A strict 5 a.m. alarm and 11 p.m. bedtime, pre-scheduled writing times, and meticulously crafted outfit mood boards are essential to my getting things done. And for the most part, these practiced methods work wonders. But sometimes, specifically when sartorial inspiration runs dry, even my most tried-and-true formulas fall short, making outfit creation feel exceptionally tough.

Fortunately, it’s become clear to me in recent months that lazy dressing is having a moment. Whereas maximalism once reigned supreme on the runways and the streets, fashion these days is more enamored with simple, chic outfits that require hardly any effort at all, be it a tailored blazer worn with dark-wash jeans or a slip dress styled under a cashmere sweater. In turn, the stress involved with putting together a well-balanced ensemble has become practically irrelevant.

Below, find 30 outfits that were practically made for lazy dressers. Though, you wouldn’t know it by looking at them.

Dua Lipa Wore the Controversial Shorts-and-Shoe Combo That’s Becoming a Thing

    [ad_1]

If you think Dua Lipa looks cool wearing just about anything, you’re not wrong. She pulls off even the most controversial of trends with ease, including a certain shorts outfit that fashion people have been embracing as of late.

While shopping in London earlier this week, Dua Lipa paired an oversize leather jacket with a summer classic: cutoff denim shorts. While you or I might typically think to wear sandals or sneakers with cutoffs, fashion people—and Dua Lipa—have been pairing them with knee boots even in the middle of summer. Given that many areas of the world are experiencing one of the hottest summers on record, not to mention the fact that knee boots are hardly breathable, I’d consider this quite a controversial pairing. But if you’re willing to ignore the heat for the sake of fashion, you certainly won’t be alone.

Keep scrolling to see Dua Lipa’s look and how other fashion people wore this combo before her. Then keep scrolling to shop some of the best denim shorts on the market.

I Finally Gave In to the Biker-Shorts Trend and Found 11 Cool Ways to Style Them

    [ad_1]

There are plenty of summer trends that I jumped on immediately this year: tie-dye everything, ribbed tank tops, and chunky “tourist” sandals, to name a few. Biker shorts were not on that list. But after seeing celebs wear the comfy shorts style over and over again, I finally decided to give them a try.

To be clear, I previously owned one pair of biker shorts that I strictly wore with a sports bra and exercise sneakers for workouts. They never saw the light of day, though, and they definitely never became a part of an outfit that didn’t involve activewear. Flash forward to today, and I can’t get enough of the style. They’re undoubtedly practical for my current work-from-home lifestyle but are also so easy to turn into tons of cool, effortless outfits, like these 11, for example…

I’m an Anti-Heels Kind of Girl, These Flat Shoes Will Look Great With Dresses

    [ad_1]

What can I say? I simply cannot handle wearing a pair of heels unless it’s a car-to-dinner-seat situation, especially if they are over 3 inches. Thankfully, the shoe gods have blessed me with a constant stream of flat shoe trends for almost a decade now—the last few years in particular. In fact, it’s rare as of late to see many of the fashion set out in the wild in heels. It’s now all about comfy shoes that don’t sacrifice style, even in the most formal of occasions. I wouldn’t have dared show up to an event like a wedding in anything but heels some years back, but times have definitely changed.

Such is the case when it comes to styling dresses in general. There are a plethora of flat shoes that go great with just about any style of dress now whether it be for an everyday outfit or the fanciest of party looks. My Style Is Simple—This Is the Easy Staple I Plan to Live in This Summer

    [ad_1]

My style skews simple at any point throughout the year. But now that summer is here, I’m all about unfussy outfits that are effortless to put together and give off a relaxed vibe, which is why I’m clinging to one easy wardrobe staple more than ever right now: linen pants. Linen clothing is a must if you live anywhere hot and humid since its breezy and lightweight feel keeps things ultra-comfortable. Practicality aside, nothing embodies the laid-back feel of summer dressing quite as linen pieces do.

That said, I’m reaching for my linen trousers more than any other pair of jeans or pants right now, and I figured you might be, too, so I went ahead and sourced 13 cool linen-pant outfits that I’ll personally be bookmarking. I think you’ll find the warm-weather staple to be surprisingly versatile after scrolling through this roundup—style a pair with a blazer for the office or wear them over your bikini as beach pants. Raise your hand if you’ve ever cringed looking at your weekly screentime report (don’t worry, mine is abysmal too). While there’s no arguing that many of us would benefit from going out to “touch grass” more, occasionally, there’s something to gain from spending copious hours online—e.g., knowledge about global events, community building, and even a few cute outfit ideas. But possibly one of the best things about social media is that it allows us not only to create or follow but to contemplate.

On a larger scale, these platforms have played a pivotal role in giving marginalized communities the platform to speak up and question society’s power structures. And on a personal level, they’ve changed how we relate to every aspect of our lives, including clothing. When a fashion trend takes off on TikTok, it may seem trite, but it’s actually saying way more about society than we think. A prime example of this is the recent rise of the “old money” fashion aesthetic.

Across Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and various media publications (including our very own), we’ve seen an amalgamation of coverage centered around phrases like “quiet luxury,” “stealth wealth,” or “old money dressing.” While the terms may differ, make no mistake, this idea is centered on discerning how wealth is displayed through clothing. It’s a concept that has invoked strong emotions of contempt and approval.

Mary-Kate Olsen Just Wore a Flat Shoe Trend, Color Trend, and Bag Trend at Once

    [ad_1]

When you’re an aging Millenial like I am, there’s really no greater sighting than an Olsen sighting. But we don’t get many of them, and the photos we do get aren’t usually of their full outfits. That’s not the case this time. Mary-Kate Olsen was photographed walking down the street in NYC last week in a casual outfit that contained a handful of popular current trends.

First up, is the color trend. Olsen typically wears dark colors, but instead, she topped her baggy ripped jeans and gauzy scarf off with a bright red trench coat. There’s no bigger color trend in 2023 than red, and to see even Olsen embrace it is further proof. Next, the bag. We’ve done lots of reporting this year about how oversized bags are eclipsing mini bags, and Olsen would likely be the first to agree. She carried a tote from The Row that’s big enough to serve as an airplane carry-on. And finally, the flat shoe trend, which is another unexpected one for Olsen: metallic gold loafers. Metallic shoes are undoubtedly one of the most fun trends of the season, and their popularity shows no signs of waning.

The One Color That Will Make All Your Summer Outfits Look So Expensive

    [ad_1]

Ah, summertime. What would we do without you? It’s arguably the best part of the year because of the freedom it gives us to explore—even if it’s just a little weekend away or dressing scantily for no reason. You can see how it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of warmer temperatures, but there was a turning point in midsummer when my desire to not overheat outweighed any fantasies about frolicking around in the biggest trends of the moment. When it’s sweltering hot, you need a fuss-free way to ensure you look cool no matter the temperature. For the fashion set, that hack is wearing one specific color: white.

Call it cliché, but when it comes to crafting the perfect summer outfit for a hot summer day, this color never fumbles. Sure, there are so many noteworthy color trends, but none of them embody “rich-mom” energy quite like this hue. That’s not just because it’s tough to keep white clothes clean (you have to have a great dry-cleaner on speed dial) but also because white can make the more basic items (think button-downs, trousers, and maxi dresses) feel exuberant. But don’t just take my word for it. Ahead, I’ve rounded up 15 white summer outfit ideas and shopped out the key pieces to re-create the looks for yourself. Whether you’re a minimalist or maximalist, these outfits will convince you that this color is easy to wear and will have you feeling yourself for the rest of the season.

No Matter the Season, I Can Guarantee You’ll Dream About These 24 Skirt Outfits

    [ad_1]

Please don’t judge me for what I’m about to tell you, but I am not a pant person. Don’t get me wrong—I own them and wear them when necessary, but they’re not my favorite. For me, the best bottom you can buy isn’t a pair of jeans or trousers—it’s a skirt. And while that may be a controversial take, I’m fully willing to stand by my assertion that it is the better bottom.

Skirts are not only more size-inclusive, but they’re also way more versatile both in styling possibilities and the fact you can find every type of skirt under the sun. Midi skirts, maxi skirts, pencil skirts… You name it. Plus, we’ve seen more and more runway collections feature skirts, further cementing the fact that they are that staple. But if you’re still not sold, you’ll want to keep reading, as I’ve done some digging to identify the six most popular skirt trends among the fashion set right now.

  • A Visual Guide to the “Wrong-Shoe Theory” Going Viral on TikTok

A Visual Guide to the “Wrong-Shoe Theory” Going Viral on TikTok

    [ad_1]

The “wrong-shoe theory” is exactly what it sounds like. Stylist and creator of the term Allison Bornstein coined it in a video she posted on TikTok last month, explaining how the simple styling trick can have a massive impact on how interesting your outfit appears. According to Bornstein, the wrong-shoe theory is how fashion people always seem to achieve a cool and visually appealing outfit that no one else is wearing.

Essentially, the idea is to choose a pair of shoes that are categorically mismatched to the rest of your outfit. In her video, Bornstein uses the example of wearing sneakers in a nonfunctional way—e.g., with an elevated outfit like trousers rather than with something sportier like leggings. The reason this works so well is because it takes the sneakers out of their original function as athletic shoes and makes them feel like a much more intentional choice.

If you’re starting to get the picture, good, because the theory extends far beyond just sneakers. It really comes down to choosing shoes that oppose the aesthetic of the rest of your outfit. So if you’re wearing an airy summer dress, skip the obvious choice of strappy sandals and go for a pair of tough moto boots or academic loafers instead. Some of the most expertly dressed fashion people swear by this trick, and to prove it, we sourced a ton of outfit examples from across the internet. To see the viral shoe theory in action, just keep scrolling.
