Today marks the final day of fashion month and although we’ve only just begun to sit down and digest everything we just saw for the spring/summer 2024 season, I’m already racing ahead to try out some of the standout looks I saw on the runways. Patience has never been my virtue and all month, I’ve been hoarding screen shots of all the cool styling ideas I’ve spotted.
I’ve spotted plenty of looks throughout this season’s shows that have left me more inspired than ever to rethink the clothes already hanging in my closet (okay, and maybe make a few purchases while I’m at it). While there are a number of broader trends happening, today I’m pinpointing the specific spring 2024 runway looks that, to me, are the ultimate source of cool style.
From the 3.1 Phillip Lim way to wear capri pants to the rising micro shorts trend that Bally and more are pioneering and the workwear jackets that Prada is ushering in, continue on to discover the nine spring 2024 runway looks I’ll be recreating ASAP and shop pieces to do so yourself.
In a year filled with denim skirts, sheer skirts, ruffled skirts, and floor-sweeping maxi skirts, I’m going against the grain to admit something that, potentially, might get me in some hot water: There’s nothing better than a plain ol’, simple miniskirt.
While you can (insert any random statistic here) about shorter hemlines leading to more spending power, I don’t need a mathematical theory telling me it’s a good financial decision to pick up a miniskirt to wear with my favorite trendy items this fall. While wearing a simple, tailored short skirt can seem like it borders on the edge of being boring, there are plenty of ways to integrate all this year’s fall trends into your outfit and keep the classic silhouette feeling incredibly fresh. From fiery pops of color our editors can’t stop thinking about to industrial details Miuccia Prada already gave a shout-out to during a recent Prada runway show, these 10 miniskirt outfit ideas might have hitting the checkout button before you know what hit you.
In case you missed it, we’ve officially entered the fall. With this period comes a whole new set of things to be excited about—especially for the fashion set. Autumn is the time when many people decide to get serious about rebooting their closets. For some, that looks like investing in a few trends, while others do a total closet cleanout. While the latter option, is noble, the start of the new season can usher in added pressures to “ditch” everything old and bring in the new. And while there’s nothing wrong with wanting to replace a few worn-down staples, the idea that you should buy an entire new wardrobe every season is unsustainable (both for the planet and your wallet). It’s crucial to find new ways to style items you already own in a way that adheres to the autumn aesthetic.
But if you’re unsure what pieces lend themselves to doing just that, let us give you one place to start: your dresses. As counterintuitive as it might seem that a dress worn at the height of the summer could transition into the fall, it’s indeed possible. In order to prove that point, we scoured the internet to find outfits that show how to wear boots with dresses. After hours of research, we narrowed down the 10 best boots to pair with every type of dress. Plus, we shopped out the best boots on the market based on longevity, price point, quality, and editorial perspective. Consider this your masterclass in making last season’s dresses feel relevant through styling this season.
New York Kendall Jenner is my favorite Kendall Jenner. Yes, she’s very chic wherever she goes, but the outfits she wears when visiting NYC are especially cool and forward. Her latest outfit to go out to lunch in the city was exactly that—no pants required.
For the occasion, Jenner wore an oversize button-down and nothing else. (Although, she appeared to be wearing hot pants in some photos, as the “pants-less” outfit trend is often just an illusion.) This outfit trend can certainly be intimidating, but the shoes Jenner styled her pants-less look with actually make it less so. Those shoes are none other than loafers—specifically, a The Row pair she’s been wearing all over New York City.
The simple black loafers really grounded the look and made it more low-key and effortless than, say, a pair of stilettos or tall boots would have. If you’re intrigued, scroll on to see Jenner’s cool no-pants outfit and shop similar loafers.
Change isn’t always easy, especially regarding the shift from summer to fall. As much as shifting into a new season can bring a bevy of things to be excited about, that doesn’t mean it won’t come with a bit of sorrow. On one hand, we can all collectively look toward the prospect of travel, new trends, and less unbearably hot temperatures. But at the same time, it can mark the end of time away from our desks, sun-filled weekends, and beach getaways. All of this is to say that it can be a bittersweet time, so we all must have our own coping mechanisms to make the transition easier.
For me, one of those coping methods comes from spending hours scrolling through social media in search of fall outfit ideas. Like many summer babies, I may be in denial about having to pack away my sundresses, but there’s nothing like a few great outfit ideas to break me out of my mood. So in my own self-serving interests (and hopefully for your benefit too), I’ve rounded up the 18 best transitional outfit ideas. With each ensemble, I’ve broken down easy outfit formulas and shopped out the key pieces you’ll need to re-create them. Plus, I’ve ensured each includes at least one summer staple that’s been styled in a fall-forward way. Whether you’re a die-hard summer lover or live for the fall, there’s plenty of inspiration ahead that will make the switch easy.
If you were to take one look into my closet, you’d quickly get the idea that I am all about elevated basics with an injection of trendy and fashion-forward pieces. My favorite way to bring those pieces together is by creating simple and oftentimes elegant outfits. That said, I am always on the lookout for outfit inspiration that embodies that exact vibe. I don’t know about you, but the first place I always turn to for inspiration is my Instagram feed.
In fact, I recently set out to find a fresh set of fall outfit ideas, and I was not disappointed. I came across a variety of outfits that fit the bill, but some of them stood out thanks to the pieces incorporated into each of the looks. This includes a white button-down, a denim maxi skirt, a black slip dress, and much more—all of which could easily be mixed and matched into a capsule wardrobe. Scroll on to check out seven fall outfit ideas that are simple yet elegant and shop each look.
The phrase “fashion power couple” is the first thought that comes to mind when describing Rachel Besser and David Perry. With Besser as a Vogue contributor and fashion director and Perry at the helm of his namesake jewelry label, the duo has a pulse on what matters in the fashion world. While they each have their own unique and inspiring personal styles, their vibes often mesh, focusing on outfits that feature forward staples and elevated basics. This results in the two gravitating toward similar pieces on the regular.
On that note, the couple recently vacationed in Europe and actually shared many pieces to maximize suitcase storage. For the most part, the shared pieces fell in that basics category to easily mix and match.
Below, you’ll uncover the specific items Besser and Perry wore throughout Europe, complete with visual inspiration. There are also shopping recommendations if you’re interested in adding a fresh piece to your own wardrobe.
As a stylist, former Nordstrom buyer, and content creator (the mastermind behind So Susie), Susie Wright knows a thing or two about putting together a perfect outfit. While she wears and recommends a range of different types of outfits, which are all documented on her inspiring Instagram feed, there are a few specific outfit combinations she swears by because they’re chic and just work.
Below, you’ll uncover the fall outfit combos that work every time. If you’re in a pinch and need something effortless and elevated, one of the looks coming your way will work flawlessly for various occasions.

I am not surprised how many times a European friend has complained to me about the fact that there are no Nordstrom stores abroad. I admit I would do the exact same thing. The selection at Nordstrom is always chic. Plus, there’s always something for every budget and every personal style. At least, Nordy offers international shipping for when they just can’t live without a piece, especially with all the discounted gems on the site right now. You can save up to 60% on thousands of stylish items now through September 12. No discount code needed.
As someone who essentially shops for a living, I can’t help but be curious as to what people from around the globe would buy from some of my favorite stores. Thanks to my aforementioned friends and my Instagram feed that’s full of European outfit inspiration, I have a pretty solid picture of what that might be. For the fashion set in places like Paris and Milan, in particular, it is all about smart blazers, cool jeans, elevated sweaters, classic shoes, and other standout basics.
Scroll on to shop 31 stylish picks that French and Italian women would scoop up from the current Nordstrom sale, plus some outfit inspiration on how to style the pieces.
Picking out your outfits for fashion week takes hours of consideration and planning. As much as we’d all like to pretend that every look found in those famed street-style roundups was thrown together effortlessly, nine times out of then, they were crafted days ahead of the first show. As for what inspires them, the previous season’s runway collections are almost always at the top of the list, and this year, for me, will be no different.
Once you decide that that’s the route you’re going to take, the next step is to select which looks to make your muses, usually based on buzziness, the weather, your personal style preferences, and what you already have in your wardrobe, of course. Since I’ve had a running list of my favorite looks from the fall 2023 shows I bore witness to last February for closing in on six months now, selecting the ones I wanted to mimic wasn’t all that difficult. Then, all that’s left to do is fill in the blanks of each outfit with new pieces. Below, see the six fall 2023 runway looks I’m prepared to recreate throughout New York Fashion Week, from the likes of Ferragamo, Bottega Veneta, Prada, and more.
If there were ever an occasion to leave it all on the table sartorially, it’d be your birthday, the one day of the year when all eyes are on you. And that applies to both birthday blowouts and casual affairs. Going the low-key route with a quaint dinner? Slip into a sultry LBD. Staying in for takeout and a movie? Toss on your nicest pajama set (feathers not included but always recommended). If you do decide to go all out on your birthday, take your outfit a step above your normal getups, and leave no eye-catching fashion item behind.
But between snagging a reservation for eight or more (or figuring out where to order takeout from) and choosing who you want to invite, it’s likely that time for mood-boarding the perfect birthday look—and subsequently shopping for it—is limited. Don’t fret. Since it is your birthday, after all, I thought, Why not? and did both tasks for you. Consider it an early present.
Ahead, find all the fall birthday outfit inspiration you need to start your big day off on a high (fashion) note. And while you’re at it, shop your favorite looks, too.
Whether while shopping or scrolling through my Instagram feed this summer, I was guaranteed to come across a cool tie-front top or cool look featuring the piece. Safe to say, the top style had become a major trend and it looks like it’s not going away any time soon. In fact, tie-front tops have become a great piece to transition into the new season, so no need to pack them up just yet.
One of the stylish ways fashion girls around the globe plan on wearing tie-front tops this fall is with a great pair of jeans. And as the weather starts to cool, adding in chic layers like jackets, cardigans or long-sleeved tops is key. For shoe options try swapping sandals for sneakers, clogs, boots, ballet flats, and loafers. Scroll on for some tie-front top and denim outfit inspiration and to shop each look as well as some of my other favorite picks of the moment.
Flats are having a renaissance of sorts lately. In many ways, they have replaced heels and are winning out as the “cool girl” shoe of the moment, but that momentum is only growing as we head into fall. Alaïa Mary Janes continue to sell out the moment they are restocked, ballerina flats are constantly being reinvented with new design details, and sleek, polished flats are taking off in a major way. In short, there is no slowing down in sight.
So, how will fashion insiders style the shoes once we hit fall? Ahead, see some transitional flat shoe outfits to wear as we head into the upcoming season. From the ways we’re already seeing Prada’s floral-embellished flats styled to the way we will see the “wrong-shoe theory” play out this fall, these are the flat shoe outfits to inspire your new-season wardrobe. Shop each of the looks here.
As a fashion editor, one of my favorite things to do is scroll through the internet to find beautiful looks that inspire me to experiment with my style and try new things. Among the sea of internet fashion people, I’ve seen some pretty stellar looks that I’m dying to recreate immediately. Since I’m no gatekeep, I’ve included looks from the coolest fashion people ahead.
Whether you’re looking for outfits that incorporate the most beautiful layering, fun colors, or longer hemlines, I’ve got you covered. You can expect a range of aesthetics from my classic style to vibrant edgy looks. Keep scrolling for the early fall outfit inspiration of your dreams.
It’s always been wild to me how long we’ve held on to the age-old idea of no longer wearing white after Labor Day. To see this rule fall by the wayside as of late has been a much-welcome change. One trending piece, in particular, is the perfect example of this: white maxi skirts. All summer, there hasn’t been a day I didn’t scroll past some iteration of the style while on Instagram—It’s clear the fashion crowd will continue wearing these skirts straight into fall.
With the help of warmer layers (sweaters, jackets, etc.) and fall-ready shoe styles (sneakers, boots, etc.), a long white skirt can easily become a chic transitional piece. That said, there’s no need to store your own just yet. Keep scrolling to check out my favorite white maxi skirt outfits and to shop each look. From tiered pieces to slinky slip styles, there is an option to fit every personal style.
Do you feel that crisp breeze? Well, that signifies the official start of fall. For some, the onset of colder temperatures hasn’t come yet, but that is by no means a deterrent for dreaming of them. In fact, for the fashion set, this time ushers in fantasies of one specific thing: sweaterdress season. And while you may be wondering why this clothing staple could be considered as exciting as cooler temperatures, taking a trip, or even celebrating the holidays, we’re here to tell you that this piece is underrated. If we’re being honest, you can’t even fantasize about playing in the foilage or being snuggled up by the fire in a cabin opening gifts with your loved ones without invoking the image of wearing a sweaterdress—it’s that prevalent. Of course, where and how you can wear this style extends beyond the cliché imagery this fall staple has been commonly associated with. So in that vein, we’ve rounded up 24 sweaterdress outfit ideas to show that this staple is something you should be excited about wearing (and shopping) year-round.
Sweaterdresses are the canvas for crafting the coolest outfit for any transitional-weather look. You can wear a simple white sweaterdress in the spring with sandals or combat boots and a leather moto jacket in the fall.
The styling possibilities are endless when it comes to this dress.
Neutral-hued sweaterdresses aren’t the only way to wear this cold-weather staple. Don’t be afraid to opt for a colorful version that champions more craft-inspired knitting techniques. Just be sure to style it with solid-hued boots and a bag to let the piece be the focal point of your ‘fit.
Our jaws dropped to the floor when we first found this dress.
When in doubt, a black sweaterdress will always be in style. But should you want to make this staple stand out, pair it with contrasting boots and an interesting bag to make it feel more trend-forward.
The sweetheart neckline on this sweaterdress is stunning.
Want to make a drab, cold day a little warmer? Wear a colorful sweaterdress with fun accessories. Whether you opt for one in a vibrant pink hue or another fun trending color, this outfit will brighten your day.
Pink is always a good idea.
Maxi hemline dresses made a major comeback on fall/winter 2022 runways, so it only makes sense to adopt this hemline in sweater form too. Opt for a darker-hued version (gray, black, or navy) paired with a belt and platform boots, and you’ll look like you came fresh off the runway.
Crying over how chic this sweaterdress is.
When you don’t want to freeze but can’t fathom the idea of wearing pants, this is the ensemble you’ll want to re-create. Pair a thick-knit midi or maxi sweaterdress with a shearling coat and you’ll be cozier than ever.
This dress’s stripes will look great with a camel shearling coat.
Sweaterdresses can make “stale” fall staples feel fresh—case in point: the look above. Pairing a brightly hued sweaterdress (like a green one) with the black coat and boots in the back of your closet is a great way to glean more wear out of your staples without getting tired of them.
The pop your fall wardrobe needed has arrived.
Of course, if color isn’t your thing, you don’t have to wear a saturated sweaterdress to get the same effect. In fact, opting for a two-tone sweaterdress paired with fun accessories will give you the same feeling of “brand-new” without having to buy into color.
Staud’s dresses are beloved among our editors.
Another way to breathe life into this staple is by opting for versions with sultrier elements—like a high-slit, cutouts, or an off-the-shoulder fit. Just keep the rest of your styling simple by pairing the dress with neutral accessories to really let this style steam things up.
Hot, hot, hot.
Is it even fall if you don’t don at least one striped sweater? Consider this the easiest dress to throw on for the season, as all you have to do is pair it with a sling bag and cowboy boots to give off full fall vibes.
You can also style this with loafers or Chelsea boots if you want a more formal feel.
Channel your inner French girl this fall and pair a houndstooth-print coat and Mary Janes with a sweaterdress. You may not be in Paris, but you’ll be trés chic nonetheless.
Just imagine how cozy this dress will feel while you wear it.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Colorful sweaterdresses are the way to spice up any fall wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to opt for a dark wine-colored or vibrant saffron-hued version paired with your favorite black boots to really get things cooking.
RVN’s knits are sustainably made with 3D printers to ensure minimal fabric waste.
For those nights when you’re going out on the town and want to show a little skin without freezing, you’ll want to pin the ensemble above for inspiration. A sheer knit dress paired with boots, great undergarments, and maybe a leather jacket over will never fail you on a night out.
The weaving on this knit dress allows for a little opacity without having to bare it all.
Sweaterdresses are the key to looking stylish year-round. All you have to do is throw on a sweaterdress and ballet flats, and suddenly, you look “polished” without actually putting in any effort.
The color and cut of this dress make it the ideal staple.
We all have experienced the moment of dread where a sweaterdress has shrunk to the point that you can’t zip it anymore or gaps are showing when you button it up. When that happens, rather than donating the piece, get creative with the styling and throw it over a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. It’s not only more sustainable to find a new way to wear it, but it’s also more stylish.
Transition the metallic knit dress that you bought for a vacation for everyday wear by styling it over jeans.
File this as further proof that sweaterdresses can be hot—so long as you opt for one with cutouts.
Just the right amount of skin.
You don’t just have to buy a new sweaterdress to get the same feel. Simply pull out one of your oversize crew-neck sweaters and wear it as a dress. If you’re worried about it being too short, add a fleece jacket, proper undergarments, and flat Chelsea boots.
Looks great with bottoms or as a dress.
Sweaterdresses are a staple, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be special. Use your accessories (like a bright shearling coat or snakeskin boots) to make this basic stand out.
Trust us when we say this will be a piece you’ll pull out time and again.
Do you know that sweaterdress in the back of your closet with an unwearably high slit that you can’t part ways with it? Don’t get rid of it. Instead, style it over printed pants or cargo pants for a cool fall look.
Meet the perfect sweaterdress for layering.
Add a little edge to this staple by styling it with a leather trench coat and platform ankle boots.
A black mini sweaterdress is a must-have in our books.
Throw a long cardigan over a turtleneck dress for maximum warmth in the winter.
You can also style this cardigan with jeans.
Who said all sweaterdresses had to be oversize? Opt for an iteration with a built-in bra, corset, or bodice, as it will look ultra-flattering on.
It’s not yellow, but it does have a beautiful neckline.
Want to dress up? Opt for a staples knit dress paired with heels and a shoulder bag for a surprising yet stunning night-out ensemble.
Date-night ready.
You’ve made it to the end of this story, and hopefully, by now, you’ve realized there are so many ways to wear sweaterdresses year-round. But should you need one last nugget of wisdom, remember that this piece does all the hard work for you. All you have to do is throw it on and maybe pair it with a belt, boots, and a tote bag. You’ll look (and feel) fabulous.
Don’t forget to add a belt!

Like many others, I am always looking for ways to boost my mood throughout the day. From saffron supplements to breathing techniques to direct morning light, I am down to try any helpful tip I pick up along the way. One recent recommendation was to look into colors that lift the spirit and incorporate those hues into your wardrobe. As a shopping editor, my ears naturally perked up at the suggestion. Mood-boosting fashion? Yes, please.
In my deep dive into color, I came to find that yellow has been shown to increase serotonin. Serendipitously, I’ve recently been obsessed with all things butter yellow, so this was news to my ears. Any excuse to scoop up some of the pieces I had been eyeing, right? After all, it’s for my mental health. Keep scrolling to shop 35 of my top yellow picks from Nordstrom. Then browse my many cool outfit ideas for inspiration on incorporating the revitalizing color.
Sometimes it can seem like certain niche fashion aesthetics are nothing more than passing flights of fancy driven by the internet’s power users. Tomato girl? Mermaidcore? Old money? But when we see a large swath of celebrities tapping into the same common theme, it has a bigger impact. This summer, the A-list crowd seems to share the same mood board. In fact, their recent outfits only confirm their shared style inspiration.
From Kendall Jenner to Katie Holmes, I can’t help but spot the same easy outfit combination on all the best-dressed celebs right now—and it’s oh-so French. It features a delicate midi dress (or full skirt and top) with pretty ballet flats and mimics a favorite we always spot on Parisian women.
Ahead, see the outfit so many celebrities are wearing on repeat this summer, and shop dresses and flats inspired by their looks.
Even before I became a mom of two, I was always on the hunt for outfit formulas that made getting ready easy without sacrificing style. There is nothing I appreciate more than being able to get dressed in ten minutes or less, especially in an outfit that’s comfortable to boot. It’s no wonder I appreciate the Scandinavian aesthetic as much as I do—The looks always have a healthy balance of the cool factor and practicality that I crave.
Enter the latest Scandi-girl outfit formula I can’t get enough of—an oversize T-shirt or button-down shirt with a long skirt and a pair of cool flat shoes like sandals, ballet flats, or sneakers.
It’s clear I am not the only one who loves this look, as it’s a favorite among fashion crowds in L.A., New York City, London, Copenhagen, and beyond. Keep scrolling to check out 12 ways to wear this outfit and to shop each look.
This summer has been filled with stylish fashion ensembles, and I’m not ready to move on just yet. The pieces I’ve gathered this season have become some of my all-time favorites, and it wouldn’t feel right to abandon them after all we’ve been through. So I’ve secretly decided to recycle some of my most beloved summer trends this fall. (No one’s going to notice, right?)
The key warm-weather styles I’m hooked on are sheer separates, utilitywear, and red accessories. Finding ways to repurpose these trends requires a little creativity and inspiration, but that’s why I’m here. Keep scrolling to shop the six trends that I’ll be wearing for the foreseeable future.
