  • I Live in Venice Beach Where Low-Key Style Is It—These Outfits Hit

I Live in Venice Beach Where Low-Key Style Is It—These Outfits Hit

    [ad_1]

I’ve always been a city girl. I was born in Kuala Lumpur, grew up in Houston, and upon moving to L.A., lived comfortably east of the 405 for years. But a California hazard they don’t warn you about is that you might meet a cute surfer who eventually lures you all the way west. After some cajoling, I gave in to my inner Pisces, packed up my gray Tabby, and moved us across town to the sun-dappled, salty-aired streets of Venice Beach.

It’s been six years since, and while I may not yet be a bona fide beach babe (I still prefer reading on the sand to roaring waves), it’s home. My hair is blonder, my mornings slower, and I love the neighborhood’s walkability and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Every time I catch another glorious pink sunset, it does feel a little like living in a fantasy.

If you’ve ever experienced L.A. traffic, you know how vast and sprawling the city is. Different zip codes mean different dress codes, and the attitude in Venice is very relaxed. Denim and comfy shoes reign supreme, and a knit is a must to combat the almost-always-present marine layer. Most of my bolder pieces have been relegated to the back of my closet, awaiting invites for martinis at Tower Bar, dancing at A Club Called Rhonda, and too much pasta at Little Dom’s. So while my highlights may not be low-maintenance, my approach to daily dressing is.

Keep reading for three of my tried-and-true outfits for your next trip to the beach.

  • I Just Came From Australia—This Is What All the Cool Girls Were Wearing

I Just Came From Australia—This Is What All the Cool Girls Were Wearing

    [ad_1]

Earlier this November, I felt downright giddy when I realized my Australia trip was right around the corner. A sunny reprieve in the middle of winter (okay, I live in California, but still)? Yes, please!

I was so blinded by my own sunny outlook that I chose to ignore my Australian relatives’ warnings. November, they warned me, was more akin to spring, and rain was far likelier than beach days. “Totally,” I agreed as I spread bikinis out on my bed.

Here’s the cold, hard truth: Melbourne is chilly. Weather-wise, it’s got the moody marine layer of San Francisco with a healthy dash of Seattle fog. It’s a gorgeous city but a gray city nonetheless! Your girl was freezing, her dreams of returning stateside a sun-kissed goddess dashed. Ever the optimist and buoyed by a daily diet of piping-hot meat pies, I chose to look on the bright side. I was 11 hours ahead of home, putting me in the unique position of living in the future, baby! With newfound zeal, I hit the streets, credit card at ready and a keen eagle eye trained on what the cool Melbourne girls were wearing.

  • I’m a Perfume Snob, But These High-Street Fragrances Smell So Expensive

I’m a Perfume Snob, But These High-Street Fragrances Smell So Expensive

    [ad_1]

With brands such as Jo Loves (which was founded by fragrance royalty Jo Malone) pairing with stores like Zara, high-street fragrances have shed their sickly sweet reputation and become seriously sophisticated. In fact, you can probably find a perfume dupe on the high street—or at least something very similar—for the most popular fragrances nowadays. So you don’t always have to break the budget to smell expensive. Whether you like clean-smelling fragrances or fruity scents or want to find your signature perfume on a budget, high-street brands H&M, Marks and Spencer, & Other Stories, The Body Shop and Zara are really leading the way for more affordable high-street perfumes.

To help you find your new high-street fragrance, I’ve found the best sellers from each store and put them to the test, matching them and their notes to their more expensive counterparts. And I have to say, these are now permanent fixtures on my fragrance shelf alongside my premium favorites.

  • I’m Picky, But These & Other Stories Jeans Have Seriously Impressed Me

I’m Picky, But These & Other Stories Jeans Have Seriously Impressed Me

    [ad_1]

As I wait for my own pair of Favourite jeans to arrive, I have a few initial observations to talk you through. This goes out to all mainstream brands: I’d love to see more size options when it comes to denim (and everything else, of course). Jeans from & Other Stories start at 24 and end at 32. Per the size guide, the 32 should fit someone between a UK 16 or 18. However, in my experience, owing to my curvy frame, I almost always have to size up. And I know many women are the same.

As for the aesthetic of & Other Stories’ jeans, honestly, I think they’re currently unrivalled. They look the authentic-vintage part, which is very difficult to achieve, and I know the cuts won’t date in a hurry (unlike those heavily frayed hems we all invested in in 2016). I can’t wait to start wearing mine with tan sandals and a white linen shirt for spring. If you’re looking to fall back in love with denim, scroll below to see and shop my picks from & Other Stories’ jeans department.

  • The 6 Items French Girls Wear to Stay Warm and Still Look Cool

The 6 Items French Girls Wear to Stay Warm and Still Look Cool

    [ad_1]

Les Francaises have a knack for making everything look as easy as un, deux, trois. From their no-makeup makeup to the breathy way they draw out their ouis, French women seem to have being effortless cornered. This is particularly true in winter, when looking cute can feel like a Herculean task. Even at subzero temperatures, French women move about unbothered, which felt novel to this Californian; the last thing I feel like doing when it’s cold and gray out is putting together a look.

But the French have it down to a science! This is partly due to how they shop. French women typically invest in a few good pieces per season, favoring timeless pieces over au courant trends. A well-cut coat. Sticking to long-lasting durable fabrics that drape well. After my first winter in Paris, I picked up a few tips to make cold-weather dressing more fun—as well as a shearling coat and pair of camel riding boots that I still own today (after all, practice makes perfect.)

Follow along, and we’ll meet at the intersection of cozy and chic.

  • I Describe My Style as Fun Yet Wearable—These Shoe Trends Hit It for Me

I Describe My Style as Fun Yet Wearable—These Shoe Trends Hit It for Me

    [ad_1]

They say fairytales can leave a lasting impression on kids. For me, it was Cinderella. Here was this poor girl who hustled away. Her only friends the literal rodents in her house. She finally gets an invite to the hottest soirĂ©e in town, gets all dolled up, and then LOSES her incredible heels (borrowed, no less) after only one wear! The emotional hangover must’ve been real, and I was just as relieved as she must’ve been to get them back. (Side note: Does shoe sizing not exist in fairytales?) It proved to me that the right pair of shoes really can change your life. (And a glass shoe? How chic is that?)

Needless to say, I’ve been a shoe gal since. Any time we went away on a family vacation, my dad would grumble and say, “Do you really need that many shoes? We’re only gone for a week,” to which my mom and I would respond, “Exactly!” A lot could happen in a week. What if we got stuck without the right footwear? It felt silly, and we were nothing if not practical.

That practically has evolved since. I still adore a vertiginous heel every now and then, but after a few hard-learned lessons (almost destroying my ankle on some Parisian cobblestone, for one), I’m looking for function alongside fun. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not totally above buying eye-candy shoes; it’s just that they should feel as sweet on my soles—like the ones I’ve listed below.

  • I Think These Elevated Basics Are Peak Cool, and You Can Get Them for Under $100

I Think These Elevated Basics Are Peak Cool, and You Can Get Them for Under $100

    [ad_1]

Basics are essential items to any wardrobe, mostly because they’re so versatile. They can be paired with other items (including statement pieces and other basics) no matter your personal style. If you find yourself scrambling to put outfits together even though you own a wardrobe full of clothes, it may be time to invest in some reliable basics such as tank tops, shirts, and dress pants. Owning some of these staples is also essential if you are looking to build a capsule wardrobe, a tightly edited selection of clothing that will last and can be worn for any occasion.

Just because they are called basics doesn’t mean these items have to be boring. A simple tank top can be designed in a variety of cuts, styles, and colorways. I selected essential pieces that will elevate any outfit, from black body-con dresses to blazers and slip skirts. And as it just so happens, there are a lot of options to choose from under the $100 price mark. Scroll down to find my top picks.

  • I Get Compliments Every Single Time I Wear These 3 Under-$100 Items

I Get Compliments Every Single Time I Wear These 3 Under-$100 Items

    [ad_1]

We all own that one piece of clothing we can’t get enough of, whether it’s a pair of jeans you can always rely on for a flattering outfit or the winter essentials you can’t live without as soon as the temperature drops. Some items just have that special quality that make them essentials and also compliment magnets from friends or strangers. And let’s be real: Getting complimented on an outfit or a piece of clothing feels amazing, especially when you’ve put effort into a specific look.

I zeroed in on three pieces of clothing I’ve been complimented on frequently, which have now become go-tos when putting outfits together. Faux leather is one of them. There’s something inherently sleek and fashionable when it comes to faux leather. We often think of pants or jackets, but there are so many options to choose from. Such versatility can also be found in knitwear (which has become a personal favorite in recent months). A good knit, whether it’s a maxi dress or a bustier top, makes any outfit stand out while keeping you cozy. You’ll also find various options when it comes to denim. It’s versatile and timeless, and I am convinced there’s a style of denim for everyone.

  • 18 Twin Sets to Pull You Out of a Winter Sweater Slump

18 Twin Sets to Pull You Out of a Winter Sweater Slump

    [ad_1]

Most winter days, I want to put on a chunky sweater so big that I might as well just wear a blanket out of the house. Sometimes, though, I would love to feel like I’m not being swallowed whole by oversized knits. I want something that’s refined, effortless and says “Hey! There’s a person under this sweater!” That’s where the twin set comes into play.
