  • Defending champ Florida is No. 3 in preseason AP Top 25 college basketball poll

    [ad_1]

The Florida Gators won the NCAA men’s national basketball championship in the 2024-25 season, but they aren’t No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 college basketball poll released Monday.

Instead, Purdue is No. 1 for the first time.

    What You Need To Know

    • Florida is ranked No. 3 in the preseason AP Top 25 college basketball poll
    • The defending champion received eight of 61 first-place votes
    • Purdue received a No. 1 ranking for the first time in a preseason poll
    • The Houston Cougars, who the Gators beat in the spring to win the title, are ranked at No. 2

The Boilermakers earned 35 of 61 first-place votes to top Monday’s poll to begin the 2025-26 season. That put Matt Painter’s squad ahead of the two teams that played in last year’s NCAA title game, with runner-up Houston at No. 2 and reigning champion Florida at No. 3.

Todd Golden’s Gators received eight first-place votes to start this year with their highest preseason ranking since the last time they entered a year as reigning champions in 2006-07, the start of a run to a second straight title.

“We are obviously excited to get the season going and being ranked No. 1 in the preseason is a great indicator of what we feel this team can accomplish,” Painter said. “But the goal is to be No. 1 at the end of the year. We’re thrilled that people think this highly of our team, but there is a long ways to go and a lot of work to do to reach that goal in April.”

Purdue started a year ranked as high as No. 2 once before, in 1987-88 under Gene Keady.

It’s another milestone for Painter, the former Keady player who has built his own successful program that is still looking for its NCAA title breakthrough as he enters his 21st season. Purdue had never been ranked No. 1 in any AP poll before the 2021-22 season, which marked the first of three consecutive seasons in which the Boilermakers have reached the top. The last was during the 2023-24 season behind two-time AP national player of the year Zach Edey in a run all the way to the national title game.

The Boilermakers reached last year’s Sweet 16 before falling to Houston on a last-second basket, but they return a first-team AP All-American in point guard Braden Smith, scoring leader Trey Kaufman-Renn (20.1) and veteran guard Fletcher Loyer.

    The top tier

Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars, the team that Florida defeated in the NCAA championship game last spring, earned 16 first-place votes to match the program’s best-ever preseason AP ranking after last year’s finals run. The other No. 2 appearance was by the 1967-68 team led by Elvin Hayes.

UConn came in at No. 4 and earned the remaining two first-place votes. St. John’s was fifth, with Rick Pitino’s Red Storm surpassing the program’s previous best ranking in a preseason AP poll (No. 7 in 1984-85).

Duke was next at No. 6, followed by Michigan, BYU — which landed the nation’s No. 1 recruit in A.J. Dybantsa — Kentucky and Texas Tech to round out the top 10.

    Quick transitions

It hasn’t taken long for Pat Kelsey to get Louisville back among the national elite, with the Cardinals checking in at No. 11 after a 27-win season to start his tenure. The Cardinals were 12-52 in the two seasons before his arrival.

Louisville is one of five programs with a second-year coach in the preseason poll, joining Michigan, BYU, Kentucky and No. 14 Arkansas with John Calipari.

    Jayhawks lower

Kansas checked in at No. 19, the lowest preseason rank for Bill Self’s Jayhawks since starting at No. 24 in the 2008-09 season as the reigning national champion. Kansas had been ranked outside the top 10 only once since that year (No. 13 in 2011-12) while starting at No. 1 in 2019-20 as well as each of the past two seasons in that stretch.

    Steven Pearl’s debut

Auburn opens at No. 20 as it enters its first season since the unexpected retirement of coach Bruce Pearl following last year’s Final Four run.

Pearl stepped aside last month after 11 seasons, triggering a transition to his 38-year-old son Steven, who climbed his father’s staff through the elder Pearl’s Auburn tenure but has never been a head coach nor coached elsewhere in college.

    Conference watch

The Southeastern Conference, Big Ten and Big 12 each had six ranked teams to make up 72% of the field. The Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East were next with three each, while the West Coast Conference had one with No. 21 Gonzaga. The Big 12 was the only league in that group to have three top-10 teams.

    SEC poll

The Gators have been chosen as the media’s pick to win the 2026 SEC title.

Kentucky senior guard Otega Oweh was selected as the Preseason SEC Player of the Year. Kentucky was selected to finish second.

Voters in the preseason poll were a select panel of both SEC and national media members.

  • Mayfield tosses 2 touchdowns in Bucs 30-19 win over 49ers

    [ad_1]

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Baker Mayfield’s heroics came early in the fourth quarter instead of the final minutes.

Mayfield threw two touchdown passes and had a spectacular scramble to help the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the San Francisco 49ers 30-19 on Sunday.

After winning four games with scores in the last minute, the Buccaneers (5-1) didn’t need a late comeback.

Up 20-19 early in the fourth, the Buccaneers faced a third-and-14 at their 41. Mayfield ducked away from a sack in the pocket, escaped another defender, scrambled out of trouble, eluded more tackles and dove headfirst, stretching the ball to get a first down on third-and-14.

A few plays later, Mayfield connected with Tez Johnson on a 45-yard TD pass down the middle to give the 49ers a 27-19 lead. Johnson made an outstretched leaping catch and the rookie celebrated his first career TD with an acrobatic flip.

The 49ers were driving for a potential tying score when Mac Jones threw an interception to Jamel Dean on fourth-and-5 from the Buccaneers 33 with just under six minutes left.

The turnover led to Chase McLaughlin’s 45-yard field goal that extended the lead to 30-19.

Playing through knee and oblique injuries, Jones threw for 347 yards with two picks, losing for the first time in four starts filling in for Brock Purdy.

The injury-riddled 49ers (4-2) lost four-time All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner to a serious right ankle injury in the first quarter. Warner’s ankle appeared to turn sideways after a couple of players fell into him.

Everyone on the 49ers bench came onto the field to see Warner before he left the field with an air cast on his ankle.

San Francisco already was missing star edge rusher Nick Bosa, All-Pro tight end George Kittle, and wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall, along with Purdy and others.

The Buccaneers, who were missing star receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin and running back Bucky Irving, lost rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka to a hamstring injury in the second half.

Mayfield — who finished 17 of 23 for 256 yards — connected with a wide-open Kameron Johnson for a 34-yard TD to extend Tampa Bay’s lead to 20-13 late in the first half. It was Johnson’s first career reception. The Bucs went for the 2-point conversion following a roughing-the-passer penalty on the scoring pass but Rachaad White was stopped on a run.

Sean Tucker’s 9-yard TD run put the Buccaneers ahead 14-10 in the second quarter. Mayfield connected with Egbuka for 17 yards and Cade Otton for 23 on consecutive plays during the drive.

Christian McCaffrey ran in from the 1 to give the 49ers a 10-7 lead. It was San Francisco’s first rushing TD of the season on the team’s 148th carry.

Kindle Vildor set up Tampa Bay’s first score with an interception at the 49ers 25 that could have been a pick-6, but he stumbled twice before getting tackled at the 12.

White ran in from the 2 to put the Buccaneers up 7-0.

The Niners’ Eddy Pineiro kicked field goals of 52, 54, 42 and 29 yards.

    Containing Christian

McCaffrey had 54 yards rushing on 17 carries and seven catches for 57 yards. He entered the game on pace for 133 receptions.

    Injury report

49ers: Purdy (toe) missed his fourth game and Pearsall (knee) sat out his second in a row.

Buccaneers: Evans (hamstring), Godwin (fibula), RBs Bucky Irving (foot/shoulder) and Josh Williams (concussion), CBs Benjamin Morrison (hamstring) and Zyon McCollum (thumb) were inactive. … Egbuka had two catches for 24 yards before going down. … RG Luke Haggard (shoulder) left in the fourth quarter.

  • No. 5 Texas A&M continues perfect start with 34-17 win over Florida

    [ad_1]

    By  KRISTIE RIEKEN

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Marcel Reed threw for 234 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score as No. 5 Texas A&M continued its perfect start with a 34-17 victory over Florida on Saturday night.

It’s the first 6-0 start for the Aggies since 2016 and they improved to 3-0 in Southeastern Conference play.

“This doesn’t mean anything if we don’t finish,” coach Mike Elko said. “It’s been the word since the offseason. It’s the only thing that we’ve talked about. We’re really excited with where we are, but we’re nowhere yet … we’re focused one week at a time, one game at a time, we’re focused on finishing every opportunity that we have.”

Florida (2-4, 1-2) was unable to build off last week’s 29-21 upset over then-No. 9 Texas that snapped a three-game skid as coach Billy Napier fell to 0-14 on the road against ranked opponents.

Texas A&M scored touchdowns on its first three possessions but managed only a field goal after that until Rueben Owens scored on a 2-yard run that made it 31-17 with about 4 1/2 minutes to go.

“As the quarterback, I have to stay calm and keep everybody else calm,” he said. “It’s not always going to be sunshine and rainbows. You want to score on every possession, but it doesn’t work like that all the time.”

That score came after Florida couldn’t take advantage of a turnover and Texas A&M took more than eight minutes off the clock on the drive. The Aggies led by 7 when Jordan Castell intercepted Reed in the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter. DJ Lagway’s pass was deflected and fell incomplete on fourth-and-6 near midfield to give Texas A&M the ball back to start the drive that ended in the score by Owens.

Napier was asked about the decision not to punt on fourth down.

“I think that the analytics would say at that point you go for it,” he said. “But in general, yes that’s one you think about.”

Dayon Hayes sacked Lagway and forced a fumble that the Aggies recovered on the first play of Florida’s next drive and they tacked on a field goal to seal the victory.

“I don’t rock with the losing. I don’t like that,” Lagway said. “We can’t get comfortable with this. It’s not acceptable. And I feel like there’s a lot of guys responding to that, and it’s not acceptable, and I’m tired of it, and I can’t go on like this. We got to fix it.”

The Gators looked good early and it was tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter before Texas A&M outscored them 20-3 the rest of the way.

Lagway threw for 245 yards with two touchdowns and Vernell Brown III had six receptions for 77 yards as the Gators faced their fourth straight opponent ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll.

The Aggies had 183 yards rushing a week after running for a season-high 303 yards despite starter Le’Veon Moss leaving before halftime with an apparent injury. Owens ran for 51 yards and Moss had five carries for 46 yards and a touchdown before limping off the field in the second quarter.

Brown fumbled early in the third quarter and it was recovered by Taurean York on the Florida 29. Texas A&M couldn’t move the ball and settled for a 26-yard field goal that made it 24-14.

Florida cut the lead to 24-17 on a 45-yard field goal with about seven minutes left in the third quarter.

Lagway put the Gators up early with his 1-yard TD pass to Amir Jackson on their first drive.

The Aggies evened it up when Reed scrambled eight yards for a score on the second play and their first possession. A 67-yard grab by Mario Craver set up that score.

Texas A&M took a 14-7 lead on Reed’s 22-yard pass to Jamarion Morrow later in the first quarter.

It was tied again after Lagway found Dallas Wilson for a 6-yard touchdown on the next drive. That touchdown came two plays after Lagway connected with Brown for a 31-yard gain.

Moss ran through a defender and dashed 22 yards for a score that gave A&M a 21-14 lead early in the second quarter.

    The takeaway

The Aggies should move up at least one spot after No. 3 Oregon lost at home to Indiana Saturday. The loss drops Napier to 21-23 in four seasons in Gainesville with a tough upcoming schedule which includes games against No. 10 Georgia and fourth-ranked Ole Miss.

    Third-down shutdown

Texas A&M’s defense has dominated on third down since the start of SEC play, allowing opponents to convert just 2 of 33 opportunities. The Aggies limited Florida to 1 of 10 on third down conversions Saturday after Mississippi State converted just 1 of 10 opportunities last week. Those performances came after they kept Auburn from converting any of its 13 chances in the conference opener.

    Big crowds

The Aggies had a crowd of 105,086 Saturday night for their 10th straight game with at least 100,000 fans.

  • Pitt upsets No. 25 Florida State 34-31

    [ad_1]

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Mason Heintschel threw for 321 yards and connected with Desmond Reid on a pair of touchdown passes as Pittsburgh defeated No. 25 Florida State 34-31 on Saturday.

A true freshman, Heintschel completed 21 of 29 passes and tossed a pair of second-quarter interceptions. But he has surpassed 300 passing yards in both of his starts, building off a rout of Boston College last week with a road upset of the Seminoles.

Reid had eight catches for 155 yards and 10 carries for 38 yards for Pittsburgh (4-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Tommy Castellanos completed 16 of 23 passes for 245 yards for Florida State, including a pair of touchdowns to Micahi Danzy — 58 yards in the fourth quarter and 33 yards in the second quarter.

But after the Seminoles (3-3, 0-3) went ahead 24-21 on Jake Weinberg’s 34-yard field-goal attempt, Florida State fumbled at midfield and then went three-and-out. Later, while trailing 34-24, came Castellanos’ 58-yarder to Danzy.

The Panthers finished with a pair of field goals and then Ja’Kyrian Turner’s 3-yard touchdown run capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive with 2:28 left.

    The Takeaway

Pittsburgh got a boost from Reid, who hadn’t played since the loss to West Virginia on Sept. 13. A Miami native, the 5-foot-8 Reid was a difference maker as he found openings in the middle of the field.

Florida State ran for 170 yards but Caziah Holmes’ fourth-quarter fumble near midfield halted a drive and took away some of the Seminoles’ momentum.

  • Siblings running fake dentist office drill veneers into woman’s gums, FL cops say

    [ad_1]

Two siblings are accused of practicing dentistry without a license in Orlando, Florida.

    Kenny Eliason via Unsplash

A brother and sister are charged with running a fake dentist office in Orlando, Florida, where investigators say one woman received veneers that were too big and drilled into her gums, leading to a “severe infection.”

After Carlos Arturo Bedoya Rendon placed the porcelain veneers into her mouth on June 27, 2024, the woman “noticed they were too large and did not look right,” court documents say.

She later had the veneers removed by a different dentist and needed four root canals due to the “damage,” as well as a separate procedure to repair her natural teeth, which were significantly shaved down by Carlos Rendon.

Carlos Rendon and his sister, Yorlady Rendon, are suspected of running an unlicensed dental practice on Village Park Drive in Orlando since at least 2020, according to investigators.

The Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation, which investigated the siblings, confirmed to McClatchy News on Oct. 9 that they were arrested.

They are facing charges of practicing dentistry without a license and operating a non-licensed dental laboratory, court records show.

Their dental business, 4D Design Your Smile, according to investigators, did not return McClatchy News’ request for comment Oct. 9.

The business was previously called Digital Cosmetology Design Your Smile, court documents say.

    The investigation

According to investigators, Yorlady Rendon would help her brother during illegal dental procedures. She was also in charge of scheduling appointments and finances, court documents say.

The MBI started investigating the siblings’ dental practice following a tip from a Florida Department of Health investigator in April 2022, according to court documents.

The investigator said a licensed dentist reported one of their patients paid Carlos Rendon about $4,000 for veneer work, and that he does not have a dental license, court documents say.

The Florida Department of Health told WOFL, which first reported the story, that Carlos Rendon has a license to practice cosmetology, not dentistry.

Court documents mention at least three victims, including the woman who developed an infection after Carlos Rendon gave her veneers. The victims are family members.

The woman initially contacted Carlos Rendon for two missing back molars, according to her sworn statement.

He recommended porcelain veneers for all of her teeth and quoted her $7,000 for the procedure, investigators say. She then agreed to get a full set of veneers.

The day of the procedure, Yorlady Rendon fit the veneers over the woman’s teeth, then Carlos Rendon glued them in place, according to investigators.

The woman first told Yorlady Rendon that the veneers looked large, but Yorlady Rendon told her “not to worry,” court documents say. When the procedure was over, the woman “wanted to cry because of how they looked.”

The next day, her tooth became fractured without her eating and she found herself struggling to talk, according to investigators.

After the procedure, she visited Carlos Rendon and complained the veneers were “pushing into her gums causing them to be swollen.”

She also “stated the one set of molars had a hole in it and all the food would go in through that hole and get trapped between the veneer and gums causing an infection,” court documents say.

Carlos Rendon is accused of saying there was nothing he could do and that “she just needed to get used to them.”

Carlos Rendon also told her that removing her veneers would require a laser machine, which he did not have, according to investigators.

He then said she needed to get her veneers removed elsewhere and promised to pay her back 70% of her money if she returned the teeth, court documents say.

She ultimately went to the hospital for nerve pain caused by the veneers and later visited Colombia to have them removed at a different dental office.

The woman told investigators she first needed antibiotics for eight days due to infection, before the veneers could be removed.

She then had the veneers removed through a laser procedure and received four root canals, according to court documents.

Over time, Carlos Rendon paid the woman back in installments totaling $5,900 after she made repeated attempts to get her money, court documents say.

According to investigators, Carlos and Yorlady Rendon have advertised their dental services as recently as Sept. 16.

  • Winter Haven roadway closed after tunnel forms underneath near construction site

    [ad_1]

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Winter Haven roadway has been closed after reports of a tunnel about “the size of a football field” opening up in the ground near a construction site.

According to Winter Haven city officials, engineers have responded to the area near Intermodal Drive Friday morning and found a tunnel formed between two retention ponds.

    What You Need To Know

    • A Winter Haven roadway has been closed after reports of a tunnel about “the size of a football field” opening up in the ground near a construction site
    •  Engineers have responded to the area near Intermodal Drive Friday morning and found a tunnel formed between two retention ponds
    • The roadway itself remains intact, but the underground cavity beneath it must be evaluated before reopening

Authorities said there is an existing retention pond across Intermodal Drive from the new construction. As excavation work progressed, a siphoning effect developed between the two ponds, causing water from the existing pond to flow underground toward the new one.

This created a tunnel beneath the roadway connecting the two ponds. Because Intermodal Drive is heavily used by semi-trucks hauling full loads, the road was immediately closed out of an abundance of caution.

The roadway itself remains intact, but the underground cavity beneath it must be evaluated before reopening.

The construction site, roadway, and stormwater infrastructure are all privately owned, city officials said.

The property owner’s construction team and geotechnical engineers are on site assessing the situation and determining the best method to safely fill and stabilize the area.

City of Winter Haven staff are present to provide support as needed, including Winter Haven Police maintaining the road closure overnight for public safety.

  • SpaceX plans to build on previous test for 11th Starship launch

    [ad_1]

BOCA CHICA BEACH, Texas — After coming off a previous Starship test, SpaceX plans to build on what was learned for the 11th launch scheduled for Monday evening.

    What You Need To Know

    • SpaceX stated it wants to build on the previous test back in August, which went well except for a small explosion
    • Super Heavy is the rocket booster part of the vehicle; the spacecraft is called Starship
    • When they are joined together, they are called Starship
    • The Super Heavy booster for this test flight was used for flight 8
    • Starship will be part of the Artemis III mission that will send people back to the moon

The famous 397-foot-tall (121 meter) uncrewed Starship plans to take off from the company’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, on Monday evening, SpaceX stated.

The launch window will open at 7:15 p.m. ET, for the suborbital test flight.

Starship is the spacecraft and the Super Heavy is the rocket booster. When they are stacked together, they are mutually called Starship.

In addition to the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, Starship is set to be used in the Artemis III mission that will send people back to the moon, stated NASA.

What to expect from the 11th test flight

SpaceX stated it wants to build on the previous test back in August, which went well except for a small explosion.

(Scroll down to learn more about the timeline of Starship’s test launches.)

For the 11th test flight, SpaceX stated it will change a few of the tests from flight 10.

The Super Heavy rocket booster being used for this test flight was used for flight 8 back in March, which saw it being caught by the 400-foot (122-meter) tall launch tower’s metal arms, which have been called chopsticks.

The launch-and-landing combo pad is affectionately known as Mechazilla.

However, for flight 11, it will get a wet landing after the hot-stage separation between it and the Starship spacecraft.

“The booster on this flight test previously flew on Flight 8 and will launch with 24 flight-proven Raptor engines. Its primary test objective will be demonstrating a unique landing burn engine configuration planned to be used on the next generation Super Heavy. It will attempt this while on a trajectory to an offshore landing point in the Gulf of America and will not return to the launch site for catch,” SpaceX described.

The total number of Raptor engines on the Super Heavy rocket booster is 33 and for this test flight, 24 have been used in previous test flights.

At the start of the landing burn, 13 Raptor engines will ignite and then it will go into a new configuration of five engines. This will help the team of engineers to “fine-tune” the booster’s path, according to SpaceX.

The booster will then use three center engines during the end of the landing burn, where it will fully hover above the ocean before being shut down and going into the Gulf of America, previously known as the Gulf of Mexico.

“The primary goal on the flight test is to measure the real-world vehicle dynamics as engines shut down while transitioning between the different phases,” explained SpaceX.

Once in space, Starship will again deploy eight Starlink satellite simulators, where they will be in the same suborbital trajectory as the craft before burning up in re-entry.

And just like in the previous test, this one will once again see the relight of a single Raptor engine in space.

This Starship will see a series of experiments that will eventually help others like it to return to the launch site for future flights.

“For reentry, tiles have been removed from Starship to intentionally stress-test vulnerable areas across the vehicle. Several of the missing tiles are in areas where tiles are bonded to the vehicle and do not have a backup ablative layer. To mimic the path a ship will take on future flights returning to Starbase, the final phase of Starship’s trajectory on Flight 11 includes a dynamic banking maneuver and will test subsonic guidance algorithms prior to a landing burn and splashdown in the Indian Ocean,” SpaceX described.

    What You Need To Know

    •  The Center of Anna Maria Island turned into the community’s recovery hub
    •  Christopher Culhane is the center’s Executive Director and said the yearlong efforts to get back to normal have been tough
    •  The Center has been providing youth sports and other activities for the community which relied on it for hurricane relief

The Anna Maria Island community suffered major impacts twice, however, the place most residents consider a home base also became a beacon of hope.

Holmes Beach resident Brooke Svoboda said she has lived on the island for years and The Center on Anna Maria Island became an integral part of the days after the storms.

“And then the supplies started coming in and it was a home. You got a smile when you started coming in, warm food, supplies,” said Svoboda. “They know it’s the heartbeat of this community and they know the island would not be the same without it.”

A year later, the community center’s children are scoring big during the center of youth soccer league games, which started back up for the fall season a couple of weeks ago.

Ironically, that league start would put it on the same timing as the storms arriving a year ago.

“The hurricanes damaged a little bit of everything on the island,” said The Center of Anna Maria Island Executive Director Christopher Culhane, as he started talking about his recollection of the storms. “Pretty dramatic. All of the tennis court. All of the higher fencing, all of it got blown over. The scoreboard we lost as well. “

A newly installed scoreboard is now up. And what caused all of this is a bad memory for most residents in the Bay area.

From fires bursting from downed power lines to rushing water over submerged streets, the moments right after the hurricanes were incredibly challenging and a chaotic scene.

The double impact of hurricane winds and flooding devastated Anna Maria Island and anything on it.

But Culhane also said something else happened soon after.

“The Center stepped up with many other organizations and started a volunteer effort to put the island back together,” he said.

Neighbors were in need, such as Svoboda, who relies on The Center for her family’s youth activities.

A year ago, she relied on them even more.

“We did stay on the island. We didn’t evacuate,” she said. “And after the hurricane hit, we came to The Center, we got supplies. It was like our home when everything was chaos and destroyed.”

    And more started to happen.

The Center would then help plant almost 30,000 plants to renourish the beaches.

They also held a relief concert last November with Lynyrd Skynyrd, raising more than $400,000 for temporarily unemployed AMI hospitality workers.

The Center being so close to the water, like everything else on Anna Maria Island, also faced its challenges.

It has been a yearlong effort to get back. The sod on the soccer fields had to get redone. The fencing and tennis courts are not fully restored.

Nevertheless, they are playing on them today.

The Center and its staff got recognition for all the arduous work they did over the year, and following their social media one can see how much.

As well as the efforts continue even today to inspire others like Svoboda’s son, Parker.

“We started a little business, and we thought it would be good to donate some back to the Center,” said Parker. “And we’ve done it enough to get to have our jerseys.”

Proceeds from Parker’s printing business is going back to The Center to help in other ways.

Because the kind of teamwork you see on the field during the youth games is also what happens on Anna Maria Island, according to Culhane.

“This community steps up,” he said. “The Center wouldn’t be here without the community. And the community always stands strong with events like this past year.”

  • Nor’easter to bring rain, strong winds and coastal flooding to East Coast

    [ad_1]

A low pressure is expected to develop today and bring rain, wind and coastal flooding all along the east coast this weekend into early next week.

    What You Need To Know

    • A coastal low will develop off the coast of Florida on Friday
    • The low will strengthen as it moves northward along the Carolina coast, bringing heavy rain, wind and flooding potential
    • The system will produce wind gusts 30 to 50 mph along coastal regions of the East Coast
    • Rainfall totals will be highest along coastal North Carolina

This storm system — a nor’easter, named for the wind direction it produces — usually brings heavy snow along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast during the winter months. However, any weather disturbance can take a similar track and produce wind and heavy precipitation, and that is expected to happen this weekend into early next week.

Unfortunately, the Outer Banks of N.C. will see their third storm so far this season. As recently as two weeks ago, rough surf and big waves collapsed eight homes into the Atlantic Ocean in this area.

A beach house in Rodanthe in Dare County toppled into the surf Friday. (Spectrum News 1/Lauren Howard)

    Track of storm

Here’s one computer model’s interpretation of the storm.

    Wind gusts

A nor’easter will produce gusty winds, and depending on the location of the storm to the coast will determine how windy it gets inland. Gusts will generally be around 30 to 50 mph for coastal regions, with some localized higher gusts. Interior sections will see less gusty conditions, with winds around 20 to 30 mph.

    Rainfall totals

Rainfall totals will be highest along coastal North Carolina, with 3 to 5 inches possible.

The low is expected to move east from the coast during the day on Tuesday, taking with it the heavy rain and gusty winds.

  • Hurricane Milton: One Year Later

    [ad_1]

Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida one year ago today. Look back on Milton’s impacts and the damage it left behind.

    What You Need To Know

    • Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida one year ago
    • It moved inland near Siesta Key on Oct. 9, 2024
    • More than 20 inches of rain fell in St. Petersburg
    • More Hurricane Milton stories

    MILTON STATS

Milton was one of the strongest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin, reaching Category 5 intensity in the Gulf on Oct. 7, 2024 with peak winds 180 mph.

The pressure is estimated to have been 895 mb at the time of peak intensity. This ties Hurricane Rita of 2005 for the fourth-lowest minimum central pressure in the Atlantic basin. The lower central pressures include 882 mb in Wilma in 2005, 888 mb in Gilbert in 1988 and 892 mb in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935.

Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Fla. on Oct. 9, 2024 at 8:30 p.m. as a Category 3 hurricane with max winds of 115 mph.

The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) estimates that Milton caused $34.3 billion in damage in the United States, almost exclusively in Florida.

One prominent building damaged by the hurricane was Tropicana Field, where the fabric roof was ripped off by high winds followed by water damage from rain falling into the stadium.

The report notes that the west coast most affected by Hurricane Milton had also been affected by Hurricane Helene two weeks before, which complicated damage assessments.

In Florida, Milton caused hurricane conditions along the west coast from Clearwater Beach and Tampa southward across Sarasota to near Venice. Tropical storm conditions occurred elsewhere across the Florida Peninsula south of a Cedar Key – Fernandina Beach line, with hurricane-force wind gusts reported in central Florida near the track of the center.

    STORM SURGE

The highest storm surge was reported between Venice southward to Boca Grande, with up to 6 to 9 feet inundation. An isolated peak of up to 10 feet was estimated near Manasota Key.

NOAA’s final report on Milton notes that the same area had a significant storm surge from Hurricane Helene two weeks prior, and the erosion and debris from its aftermath compounded the damages incurred during Milton.

Here are the storm surge numbers from around Florida:

    WINDS

Peak winds exceeded 100 mph in Manatee and Pinellas County. The strongest winds were recorded in Egmont Key with a 105 mph gust.

Here are the maximum wind gusts reported around Florida during Hurricane Milton:

    RAINFALL AND FLOODING

Milton produced a large area of heavy rain across portions of the central and northern Florida Peninsula, including 10 to 20 inches of rain in Tampa Bay.

The highest reported storm total rainfall was 20.40 inches at a Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) site near St. Petersburg.

Here’s an interactive rainfall map from around Florida.

    TORNADOES

Milton caused a significant tornado outbreak over the southern and central portions of the Florida Peninsula on Oct. 9, including 45 confirmed tornadoes. There were 3 EF3 tornadoes, 6 EF2 tornadoes, 25 EF1 tornadoes and 7 EF0 tornadoes.

Here is an interactive map of the tornadoes produced by Hurricane Milton.

    IMPACTS

Milton was responsible for 15 direct deaths – 12 in the United States (all in Florida) and 3 in Mexico.

    • Six people died due to the tornado near Fort Pierce and Vero Beach.
    • Four people were killed by falling trees, while there were two deaths due to freshwater flooding.

Milton caused 27 indirect deaths in the United States, all in Florida.

Most of the deaths were due to health issues during storm preparations or post-storm clean-up or due to falls related to storm preparations, clean-up, or power failures.

  • FSU’s Pritchard moved from hospital to rehab site as he recovers from shooting

    [ad_1]

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State freshman linebacker Ethan Pritchard is “alert, responsive and able to communicate” after being shot in the back of the head following the team’s season opener in August, according to a post on the Seminoles football program’s X account.

Pritchard was released from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital on Thursday and moved to Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville for the next stage in his recovery.

The football team at Pritchard’s high school alma mater, Seminole High School in Sanford, posted a video of him leaving the hospital on its X account Thursday afternoon.

“We are thankful for the efforts, thoughts and prayers of so many people and ask that you continue to support Ethan and his family as this process continues,” Florida State football posted in an announcement on X.

Four people were arrested in connection with the shooting. Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass said last month that Pritchard was “not doing anything wrong” when he was ambushed outside an apartment complex. He added that Pritchard was dropping off an aunt and a child at the time of the shooting.

Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young said the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

“I am so thankful for everyone who has prayed for my son,” Earl Pritchard said in a statement. “There have been a lot of ups and downs over these last 39 days, and it is remarkable that Ethan and I were able to leave the hospital together today.”

Pritchard also thanked FSU coach Mike Norvell for being “a constant presence visiting us here at the hospital.”

“His players and staff have continued to make us feel part of the team,” Pritchard added. “I can’t fully express how much those moments have meant to me and Ethan.”

Seminole High School hosted a fundraiser in early September at a football game, selling T-shirts with his number on them.

All funds from T-shirt sales and concession sales went to his family to help pay for his medical bills.

  • Weather a concern so SpaceX delays Amazon’s Kuiper launch

    [ad_1]

CAPE CANAVERAL SPACE FORCE STATION — The weather became a concern so SpaceX postponed the launch of two dozen of Amazon’s Kuiper satellites to Saturday.

    What You Need To Know

    • The KF-03 mission will launch from Space Launch Complex 40

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket had been to leave Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 40 at 9:34 p.m. ET Thursday.

The KF-03 mission’s launch window now opens at 8:41 p.m. ET Saturday, and it is set to close at 11:15 p.m. ET, stated the California-based company. That means SpaceX has during that time period to launch its Falcon 9 rocket.

The 45th Weather Squadron had only been forecasting a 45% chance of good liftoff weather Thursday, with the following violation rules in place: Cumulus cloud, lightning and surface electric field.

Find out more about the weather criteria for a Falcon 9 launch.

Still wet behind the grid fins

This is only the second launch for newcomer first-stage booster B1091.

Its maiden launch was back in August of this year during another Kuiper launch, KF-2 mission.

After the stage separation, B1091 is expected to land on SpaceX’s droneship Just Read the Instructions which will be in the Atlantic Ocean.

    About the mission

This launch will see 24 of Amazon’s Project Kuiper satellites go into an altitude of 392 miles (630 kilometers).

Like the SpaceX-owned company Starlink and its satellites that orbit Earth, Amazon’s Project Kuiper will have its own low-Earth orbital satellite network.

The Kuiper satellites will provide internet service to customers around the world.

Before this launch, there are 129 Kuiper satellites in orbit, with Amazon planning more than 3,200 once all is said and done.

  • Mystery rider joins 5 others in Blue Origin’s New Shepard launch

    [ad_1]

TEXAS — The mysterious sixth rider was revealed as the half dozen space explorers were launched on Blue Origin’s New Shepard launch on Wednesday morning.

    What You Need To Know

    • Six people were part of the NS-36 mission
    • 🔻Scroll down to watch two-time Blue Origin astronaut Sharon Hagle share experiences 🔻

The six are part of the NS-36 mission, Blue Origin’s 15th crewed mission, which took off at 9:40 a.m. ET from Launch Site One in West Texas, stated the Washington-state company.

The launch was originally set to go off at 9 a.m. ET, then it was pushed to 9:30 a.m. ET. There was no word as to why it was pushed back.

All six climbed onboard the R.S.S. First Step spacecraft and once stage separation happened, they experienced zero gravity for about a couple of minutes before returning to Earth as three parachutes deployed.

They traveled beyond the Kármán line, the internationally established edge of space at 62 miles/100 kilometers above Earth’s surface.

Just like SpaceX rockets, the New Shepard is designed to land autonomously, and the booster touched down on a landing pad. Before the stage separation, the rocket booster was going about 2,200 mph/3,541 kph.

    Meeting the six explorers

While six people are set to go up, only five have been fully named before the launch.

    1. Jeff Elgin
    2. Danna Karagussova
    3. Dr. Clint Kelly III
    4. Aaron Newman
    5. Vitalii Ostrovsky

Learn more about these travelers here.

The sixth person’s last name appeared as “Lewis” on the mission patch.

“… an undisclosed sixth crew member who asked to remain anonymous until after the flight,” stated Blue Origin in a press release.

However, once the crew stepped out of First Step, the mystery sixth person was revealed to be Will Lewis, the chairman and CEO of Insmed, a biopharmaceutical company.

This was not the first time a person has wanted his or her identity hidden. In the NS-30 launch in 2025, a sixth crew member kept his or her identity a secret.

However, for Kelly, this was his second time on Blue Origin, previously launching on the NS-22 mission in 2022.

And the commercial space flight comes at a price.

According to a Blue Origin online form to book a flight, reserving a seat requires a minimum deposit of $150,000.

Blue Origin has been flying people into space since 2021.

Two-time Blue Origin astronaut Sharon Hagle shared with Spectrum News what it was like preparing for her first mission to space in 2022 on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket and the experiment she conducted on her second trip in 2024.

She also shared what it was like to experience being in space and the importance of her nonprofit SpaceKids Global

Both her and her husband, Marc Hagle, have gone up together and they live in Winter Park, Fla.

  • NCAA approves a single January transfer window in college football

    [ad_1]

The NCAA approved a single January transfer window in college football on Wednesday, a move that will allow coaches with high-stakes postseason games to focus more on matchups than player retention.

    What You Need To Know

    • The NCAA officially put in place a single transfer window in college football
    • The new 15-day window is Jan. 2-16, changed from the 20-day window in December
    • Football Bowl Subdivision coaches supported the change at the American Football Coaches Association convention earlier this year
    • The move allows players in postseason games to remain eligible before entering the portal

The Division I Administrative Committee approved the new window of January 2-16. Bowl subdivision coaches voted unanimously to support the change during their American Football Coaches Association convention earlier this year.

The new 15-day period replaces the current 20-day December period. Most teams now will be able to keep active players as they prepare for their biggest games.

Last season, Penn State backup quarterback Beau Pribula entered the portal and missed his team’s run in the College Football Playoff.

The new window will allow players on teams in postseason games to remain eligible before entering the portal. Players on teams competing on or after Jan. 12 can notify during a consecutive-five-day period beginning the day after their team’s final postseason game.

The spring portal period already had been removed. The April 16-25 window this past offseason created havoc for coaches and players during spring practice. Nico Iamaleava, a quarterback who led Tennessee to the playoff last season, left for UCLA in the most high-profile example.

The NCAA also announced that the head coach change exception for football will now be 15 days, starting five days after a new coach is hired if that announcement comes after Jan. 2.

  • DeSantis announces over 9,400 law enforcement recruitment bonuses since 2022

    [ad_1]

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Speaking in Panama City, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the law enforcement recruitment bonus program has awarded over 9,400 bonuses to new officers in the state.

According to the governor, the one-time $5,000 bonus incentives the younger generation to start a career in law enforcement, while also encouraging recruitment from jurisdictions outside of Florida.

In addition to the bonus, the governor’s office said “benefits of becoming a Florida law enforcement officer include financial stability, upward mobility, health and retirement benefits, student loan forgiveness programs, home loan programs, and more.”

The latest round of bonuses went to law enforcement serving the Panhandle region, with another 734 distributed to LEOs across the state of Florida, DeSantis said.

“Today in Panama City, we welcomed new law enforcement recruits from Bay, Franklin, Gulf, and Walton counties and awarded them $5,000 recruitment bonuses,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Many new officers across the state moved to Florida from soft-on-crime jurisdictions, where prosecutors allow crime to run rampant and local politicians denigrate law enforcement. Here in Florida, law enforcement officers are supported and appreciated — and criminals are held accountable.”

Out of the 9,400 bonuses, DeSantis said 2,000 have come from other jurisdictions. The bulk of the bonuses are young recruits starting out in law enforcement, he said.

Since the launch of the program in 2022, DeSantis said the total awarded has been $63 million.

  • North Dakota tornado from June upgraded to EF5

    [ad_1]

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Forks, N.D., reevaluated a tornado from June 20, 2025. Completing additional surveys and working extensively with wind damage experts, the new estimated maximum wind speed is greater than 210 mph, making it an EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita tornado scale.

This is the strongest tornado to touch down in the United States since the Moore, Okla. twister on May 20, 2013.

    What You Need To Know

    • A reevaluation of the June 20, 2025 tornado gave the rating EF5
    • This is the strongest tornado to touch down in the United States since 2013
    • Estimated winds in the twister exceeded 210 mph

June 20, 2025, was an active day of severe weather in the Plains. Meteorologist Carl Jones, with NWS Grand Forks, explained that 22 tornadoes touched down that day in North Dakota.

He added, “This is also a preliminary number that may yet change as we continue to scour satellite imagery and sift through damage reports (still!) and assess whether it was tornadic or not – much further complicated by the fact that large area within the state experience significant damage from the derecho in the same areas that saw tornadoes.”

The tornado south of Enderlin, N.D., was a strong tornado. “The initial storm damage survey team found severe damage consistent with an EF3 or greater tornado with a preliminary estimated peak wind speed of 160 mph.”

However, Jones says that wasn’t the end of it. “A Quick Response Team (QRT), a team of wind damage experts, was assembled and agreed that given the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale damage indicators available, there were points consistent with high-end EF3, if not greater.”

Meaning additional investigation was needed, and the tornado could end up being rated higher. A train derailment south of Enderlin, ND during the time of one twister was a big prompt for the reevaluation. Collaborating with structural damage experts, namely the Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University’s Canadian Severe Storms Laboratory, they were able to model object trajectories and the force/wind required to move such objects.

This was important and Jones says, “Allowed for the capability to assess the train derailment of 33 train cars, including several full grain cars that were tilted over and tanker cars that were lofted off the track, that yielded the EF5 intensity rating.”

Additionally, other indicators for the reevaluation included high-end tree damage near the Maple River, east of Enderlin, as well as a foundation to a farmstead that was swept clean with debris scattered downwind.
