  • Skateboards and STEM collide at the Orlando Science Center this weekend

    Skateboarding meets science this Saturday at the Orlando Science Center. 

    To welcome the new skateboarding-centric exhibit 2theXtreme!, this weekend’s event brings Florida nonprofit Skate Bud and its executive director Zach Moldof, plus semi-pro skaters from Galactic G skate shop, for a mashup that will show how math and motion collide.

    Visitors can learn how skaters use physics and geometry to pull off their most jaw-dropping tricks, then head into 2theXtreme! to design a skateboard that’s built to shred. The exhibit runs through Jan. 5, but Skate Bud and the local skating crew are in the house for one day only.

    Skate Bud is a nonprofit focused on skateboard accessibility, making it easy for anyone to learn the craft by working alongside government, community leaders and private spaces to design and build better public spaces. The organization’s mission is to make skateboarding approachable for everyone.

    From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Level 1 Clubhouse will be packed with activities: fingerboard stations for learning the physics of movement on a micro scale and a make-your-own cardboard skateboard craft station. At Skateboards 101, participants can safely learn to balance and ride with the help of modified training boards and experienced instructors from Skate Bud’s board basics program. 

    From 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Entrance A, semi-pros from Galactic G will take the stage and the ramps for live trick demos, showcasing the real-life math behind flips, grinds and ollies.

BUT IT IS STILL GOING TO BE MAGICAL. AND ALL THINGS SCIENCE RELATED ARE GEARING UP FOR THE BIG DAY. WE’RE IN THIS COSMIC DANCE ALWAYS ORBITING AROUND, AND THERE’S A SLIGHT ANGLE WITH WHERE THE MOON ORBITS. AND SO IT JUST BARELY EVER IS THE PERFECT ANGLE FOR US TO ACTUALLY SEE AN ECLIPSE. AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO GET THAT PERFECT ANGLE IN THE UNITED STATES FOR ANOTHER 20 YEARS. AND SO THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO ACTUALLY SEE IT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF ADMISSION.
