  • Orlando’s FusionFest celebrates culture, community and the power of showing up

    Credit: Matt Keller Lehman

“When I saw people gathering together and sharing these cultural, artistic, community experiences, I really felt that this was the place that I wanted to be,” says FusionFest executive director María Fernanda Saavedra.

And indeed, FusionFest succeeds because it imparts a sense of belonging to all present. Beyond borders and nations, at its best FusionFest demonstrates that all cultures have a place in Orlando’s ever-growing community through direct connection.

Eight years since it debuted downtown, FusionFest returns to the Dr. Phillips Center’s Seneff Arts Plaza with its mission unchanged: Celebrate the cultures that shape Orlando through their food, dance, music, art and storytelling.

FusionFest didn’t begin in a boardroom. It began in living rooms, community gatherings and conversations among neighbors as Orlando’s population exploded with new residents from across the globe. “We wanted to put together a nice space that everybody felt included in. I think that’s one of the big successes about this festival, that this festival is for everybody,” Saavedra says.

What started as a generous handful of participants has since grown into a sprawling, collaborative event involving artists, performers, nonprofits and international organizations. This expansion hasn’t been a smooth climb. FusionFest, like many arts organizations, has faced a year that Saavedra describes as “one of the hardest yet.”

“This has been a very difficult year, not just for FusionFest, but for arts and culture, social services, and all kinds of organizations that sustain themselves by grants,” Saavedra says. “We’re just trying hard, like every other organization, to keep it going.”

Even amidst adversity there have been positives — collaborations with the Orlando Museum of Art, expanded community partnerships and the recent exhibition at Orlando International Airport featuring 10 visual artists, Art of Joy.

“FusionFest is not a one-person organization,” Saavedra says. “It’s many people. We all contribute in different ways.”

One program very close to Saavedra’s heart is the Migration Films project. “We pair one member of the community with one filmmaker and create these five-minute short films,” she says. “It shows how we are so alike and so different at the same time.”

Saavedra says her own story mirrors that of many participants.

“I am part of FusionFest because I felt that my country — I’m from Colombia — [should be] represented somewhere,” she explains. “Not just among Colombians, but in the community.”

Amid contentious national debates over diversity and inclusion, Saavedra believes FusionFest’s mission is unchanged and resolute. “Diversity is the future. Inclusion is the key. And the world needs unity,” she says.

This year’s festival features new additions, including a “Joyful Tent” presented by Joyful Orlando with Global Peace Film Festival 360, offering cross-cultural mental wellness and consciousness practices. Families can enjoy arts and crafts at a kids’ area, and there will even be a goat-petting zone (a unifier if there ever was one).

“Don’t stay home,” Saavedra says. “Come to FusionFest. Bring your kids. Bring your friends. This festival is for everybody.”

And for anyone who shows up, she promises real human connection, stripped of social media fog. “When you see all kinds of flags, colors and countries being represented, it makes a true statement that we genuinely want to be part of this organization,” she says. “Every time is a learning experience for me. It adds value to your life.”

    (FusionFest: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29-30; Seneff Arts Plaza, Dr. Phillips Center, 445 S. Magnolia Ave.; fusionfest.org; free)

Adventures on Tap hosts tabletop gaming for charity

For the past three years, Orlando gaming enthusiasts have gathered regularly to roll dice, drink beer and raise money for local charities.

Nick Larson and Cami Wooley co-founded event company Adventures on Tap in 2021 after realizing tabletop roleplaying organizations in their area tended to emphasize profit, not community.

“We say we’re here to do good, not well,” Larson said. “The RPG [roleplaying game] space as a whole seems to be heavily monetized, and we wanted to do something different.”

The self-proclaimed “beer geeks” and “game geeks” had a vision: inclusive events where players could drink beer, play tabletop games, buy crafts from local artisans and raffle on baskets for local charities.

Today, Adventures on Tap hosts three to four events per month at a rotating roster of local spots including Oviedo Brewing, Conduit in Winter Park and Ten10 Brewing. It raises about $1,200 to $1,200 monthly for exclusively local charities. Beneficiaries have included nonprofits like Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando and Child’s Play Charity, which donates video games to pediatric hospitals.

“We never send the money out … we always make sure it’s local,” Wooley said.

Adventures on Tap specializes in “one shot” gaming sessions, or single adventures completed in a few hours, like a sold-out Dungeons & Dragons event at Conduit on Saturday, Aug. 3. But it also offers miniature painting lessons, including one happening Monday, Aug. 5, at Twelve Talons Beerworks on East South Street, and ongoing campaign meetups.

At each one-shot session, the company holds a charity raffle. Prizes range from crafts that Adventures on Tap buys from local vendors, like dice bags and homemade shirts, to tickets to Kissimmee’s Medieval Times. Proceeds go entirely to charity.

But ticket sales, which equal about $20 per player, go to internal funding — including paying the dungeon masters, or DMs, responsible for organizing each game.

“We’re one of the only D&D [Dungeons & Dragons] groups in town that pays our DMs,” Wooley said. “We don’t pay them a huge amount, but we do make sure that they’re not out for their supplies and travel and beer.”

One of the most popular draws is Dungeons & Dragons, a popular fantasy game first published in 1974. But players also have the opportunity to try out lesser-known games. Those include the Harry Potter-esque “Kids on Brooms” or sinister “Blades in the Dark” — Wooley and Larson’s respective favorites.

Larson said he also hoped to bolster another community: local breweries, which he said suffered after the pandemic. Adventures on Tap has a “symbiotic relationship” with the restaurants where it hosts events, the former service industry worker said.

“We want to put butts in seats for six hours and have them buy beer,” he said. “And we’re not going to charge the brewery anything, and the brewery is not going to charge us anything.”

Adventures on Tap holds most of its events during time spots when breweries are traditionally “absolutely empty,” like midday on Sundays.

As far as the interaction between beer drinking and gameplay, Wooley said the combination affects each player differently.

“If somebody says, ‘I want to do something,’ and they describe it and it sounds dope, One Beer Cami is more likely to be like, ‘well, let’s try and maybe think about that,’” she said. “Five Beer Cami is like, ‘yeah, that sounds awesome, let’s do it.’”

Both Larson and Wooley hold day jobs, as an engineer and software marketer, respectively. They consider Adventures on Tap a “labor of love” that they’ve enjoyed seeing grow from a small, one-event-per-month group to a company hosting three to four events per month as far north as Mount Dora and Sanford.

Larson and Wooley have tried for the last two years to register their company as a nonprofit, but without the money to pay for legal assistance, they haven’t been able to navigate the “legal rat’s nest” required to do so, Larson said.

But Larson said he still looks forward to seeing the group expand and encourages those looking for community to give it a try.

“If you have any experience whatsoever, you’re overqualified,” he said. “We’re not here to make a million dollars … we try and keep everything open, welcome and cheap.”

As mentioned, Saturday’s Dungeons & Dragons event  at Conduit is sold out, but tickets are still available for its September campaign session Sept. 14 at Ten10 Brewing  on Virginia Drive. There are also some spots still available for Sip and Paint at Twelve Talons at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5. Tickets are available through Adventures on Tap’s website.

  • Orange County Animal Services hosts ‘Bridgerton’ adoption event through this weekend

Orange County Animal Services hosts ‘Bridgerton’ adoption event through this weekend

Photo via Orange County Animal Services

Orange County Animal Services this weekend hosts an adoption event for all the Bridgerton fans of Central Florida.

The “Lady Whiskertown” adoption event is happening now through Sunday, June 16, with “vintage-style” theming and reduced adoption fees.

The event, which kicked off June 13, coincides with the release of new episodes of the Netflix historical romance series.

The “Lady Whiskertown” event offers a reduced $10 adoption fee on “ready to go home pets,” meaning the animals have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Orange County Animal Services currently has 60 pets that meet the reduced fee requirements. Remaining pets available will be up for adoption at the shelter’s standard fees: $55 for dogs and $40 for cats.

The Bridgerton-themed promotion aligns with a peak in animal numbers at the shelter, which has 367 pets at its location near the Mall at Millenia and 277 other pets in foster care, according to a release.

Throughout June so far, Orange County Animal Services has gained 450 cats and 264 dogs, the shelter said.

Whether you need a walking buddy or someone to hang out on the couch and watch the new season of Bridgerton with, this event is a great opportunity.

SeaWorld Orlando’s 60th anniversary is coming up, which means a new roller coaster, special discounts, vintage merchandise, cake-cutting and more is on the way.

The year-long celebration happens March 21-24 and will mark 60 years since SeaWorld first opened in San Diego with special limited-time events and opportunities.

Every day at 10 a.m. during the launch party, guests will be able to attend a celebratory cake-cutting with SeaWorld Orlando Park President Jon Peterson and receive a free cupcake while Peterson tells stories about SeaWorld’s 60 years.

T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, plush animals, snow globes, water bottles, backpacks, notebooks, blankets and a custom Precious Moments collectible are just some of the new vintage-inspired merchandise items hitting shops for the park’s 60th.

There will also be opportunities for guests to interact with Shamu and Crew for the first time in years and take a commemorative picture with them and Coral the Dolphin, Sydney the Shark and Puck the Penguin.

The historic Pass Member Lounge in SeaWorld Orlando will make a comeback as a special gallery with historic photos and memorabilia from the park over the past 60 years. Dancers, confetti cannons and commemorative photo-ops will also be a part of the celebration.

Park officials also announced that for a limited time, guests can buy tickets, annual passes and Fun Cards for up to 30 percent off.

As previously announced, SeaWorld Orlando will also debut the Penguin Trek rollercoaster this summer.

The stars of ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ come to Orlando next week

Indie cult-classic Napoleon Dynamite is celebrating 20 years of unforgettable dialogue and coming-of-age cringe this year, and Orlando’s getting a front-row seat next week.

To mark the milestone, some of the film’s original cast members are hosting “Napoleon Dynamite Live” events at venues around the country, including Orlando’s Plaza Live.

The event includes a screening of the film followed by a conversation with fan favorites Jon Heder (Napoleon), Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) and Efren Ramirez (Pedro) — who will all be in the house.

Fit for all ages, the show will be a mix of Q&A, improv comedy, game show-style activities and party vibes with lots of audience participation. (Lucky you!)

The live event happens at the Plaza Live on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. Tickets start at $35.
