  • Orlando drag luminary Myki Meeks is competing on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ and she has a few things to say

    [ad_1]

Maybe you’ve seen her perform as one of the core members of Best of Orlando-winning drag night Off the Record. Maybe you’ve seen her hosting Orlando’s own take on Drag Race, YouTube series The Gig. Maybe you caught her as part of the Ren’s Nosferatu aftershow, V-Bar. Myki Meeks is one of the busiest drag artists in the City Beautiful, and her calendar got a hell of a lot more full with the recent announcement that she’ll be a contestant on Season 18 of RuPaul’s Drag Race premiering Friday, Jan. 2, on MTV. Orlando Weekly caught up with Meeks right before things get wild …

Congratulations, and I assume you had to keep this news secret for far too long?

It was very difficult! I mean, I just left town and did probably the biggest thing I’ve done in my life so far. And to come back and act like I was just going to see Grandma for a few weeks, it was hard. But, you know, it felt very cool to just enjoy these last few months of normalcy before everything erupted.

How would you describe your drag artistry to folks who will be just now discovering you through Drag Race?

I’ve always said Myki Meeks is a theatrical, dynamic powerhouse. My aesthetic reference points are old Hollywood glamour and party girl. So I see myself as a cross between Ava Gardner and Charli XCX.

    That’s quite a …

Very specific references, but it’s true. I came up through the Orlando drag scene, which has very strong roots in pageantry. I’ve done pageants a few times, but my weekly gigs are more “party girl,” so I find that I like just going between the two.

As you were moving farther along in the audition process, did you turn to any Orlando RuPaul alumni for advice?

So in between the calls — the first call was to say, “Hey, you’re being considered,” and the second call was, “You got it” — I don’t think I brought it up to anybody except Jewels Sparkles from Tampa, because we’re close sisters and I didn’t want to put too much energy into it without confirmation. But once I got the final call, I sat down with Roxxxy Andrews. We went through my whole runway package. She gave me some fantastic advice, and Ginger Minj gave me some really good words of encouragement.

What was it like performing at OTR the same night the news hit the internet?

That was overwhelming, for sure. This is a show that I’ve helped promote and create for the past four years. This past year, we started bringing in queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race, and now to be on the other end of that — to showcase the community in this way, to say, “Hey, your girl has made it to this big platform” — it felt very, very special. I did my very first meet-and-greet with the community of OTR. It was a little silly, because it’s the same people I see every week, but to see the love and energy come back to me, it was just a very special night.

Speaking of television, did hosting The Gig prepare you for Drag Race at all?

You know, I don’t think I brought up The Gig at all during Drag Race. So I love hearing these types of questions. The Gig was a special project in partnership with The Ren. There was a lack of competitions in the scene, and I’ve always wanted to do my own. Donald Rupe, the producer of the Ren, was like, “Well, why don’t we take this to the next level and make this a whole YouTube series as well?” How did it prepare me for Drag Race? Well, I was literally getting ready for Drag Race as we were filming and producing The Gig, both things at the same time. So if you saw me at that time, you would have seen the stress behind my eyes. It was such a special time. I mean, it really did prepare me. I had cameras on my face. I had microphones. We had to do confessionals. It also gave me the insight of what it felt like to be a judge and what I wanted to see from a contestant. I think one of the biggest takeaways was, everybody in the competition was fantastic, and that’s undeniable. It’s not about who is good, who’s bad. It’s about who shone the brightest that week. And I took that mindset with me to Drag Race and thought, well, if I don’t have a top placement this week, I can’t deny that I at least did it and I showed up the best that I could.

Do you have any plans for the holidays? Or anything leading up to Jan. 2?

I think this is definitely the time to catch up on sleep. I just came back from New York and Chicago for press week. It was four or five straight days of 8 a.m. drag. And this is definitely the time to enjoy with my family, before things get wild. It all feels a little unreal. So I’m just going to be with my friends, visit my family, play a lot of videogames, relax until Jan. 2.

What’s the promo grind like for this?

Once we did the premiere party, there was a huge press junket, I think I spoke with like, 12 to 15 different outlets, and after I was done, I just sat back in the dressing room and thought, like, “What the hell just happened?”’ It’s a little imposter syndrome to me, because I’m like, “How did I get to this point?” But now that I’ve been able to sit with it for a little, I’m like, I’ve worked so hard for something like this and now I’m ready to receive that energy back.

Where can we see you perform locally for now?

Even during the run of the show, I will still be at Off the Record Wednesdays as much as I can. So we’re working right now, if I can give away a little bit, we’re working to bring in my Season 18 sisters during the airing of the show on Wednesdays. There’ll be viewing parties on Fridays. I’ll definitely be at the Renaissance Theatre Co. [at 54 W. Church St.] Jan. 2 for the premiere party for the first episode. And then when I’m available, I’m still on cast at Southern Nights on Thursdays. You know, there hasn’t been an Orlando queen on a regular season since Season 9, and this is Season 18, so almost 10 years. It’s a whole new generation, and I’m just excited to represent them.

It’s been almost a year in the making, but the day is finally here: The first episode of Shook — drag meets ghost-hunting reality show — gets its Orlando premiere celebration.

The show features top Central Florida drag performers Medusha, Dollya Black, Venus Envy, Draggedy Anne and Sue Cyde on the hunt for the paranormal. This first episode sees the queens — armed only with cameras, killer looks and copious one-liners — exploring the very haunted St. Augustine Lighthouse.

This watch party also features live performances from Davi Oddity, Sue Cyde, Medusha and Draggedy Anne, and E. You will believe.

    7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $14.

  • Alt-drag showcase Resistance in Thornton Park is an essential post-Pride Parade stop Saturday

After the parade is over and you depart the Come Out With Pride celebrations at Lake Eola, head to Thornton Park mere footsteps away and let your evening take a darker — yet no less festive — turn.

Alt-drag powerhouses Gala of Ghouls and Hellhound Entertainment team up for a ferocious and spine-chilling night of drag, burlesque, local vendors and artisans, and refreshments aplenty.

There are many surprises and jump-scares that are being kept under wraps, but terrifying and glamorous performances are promised by the likes of Kissa Death, Amnesia Effect, EGOT, Sue Cyde and Dr. Victor Von Vector, among so many more. A perfect mix of anger and aesthetics.

  • Fall Guide 2025: Our picks for Orlando’s best things to do – Orlando Weekly

    [ad_1]

Oliver Morris and Casey Tregeagle in “Nosferatu” at The Ren (2024) Credit: Rachel Dresner

Whether your Halloween decorations have been up for weeks or you’ve been waiting patiently for that calendar page to turn, the time has come: Fall is here. So go ahead and start marking your calendar with all of the below dates, our picks for what we are somewhat arbitrarily defining as fall in Orlando — Oct. 1 through Nov. 11, or in other words, all the weeks between this, our Fall Guide, and the arrival of our Holiday Guide Wednesday, Nov. 12. — Pumpkin spicily yours, the OW editorial team.

    ???: Nosferatu

This is a sentimental pick for us, even through — as we type this — the Renaissance Theatre Co.’s immersive annual vampire extravaganza is on unexpected and unwelcome hiatus. The theater space has been shut down by the city after a surprise inspection revealed code violations, and there’s no clear timeline for reopening. And that sucks (wink wink) because Nosferatu is a dazzling, elegantly staged, carnal and campy delight year after year. For now, you can donate to the Ren directly or check out sister event V Bar as it haunts different venues around town like Plaza Live.

    Saturday, Oct. 11: Leslie Jones

“Things are dark, but I want to give people a reason to laugh instead of cry,” says comedian and television star Leslie Jones. You know her from Saturday Night Live, the Ghostbusters reboot, her singular Olympics commentary, guest spots on The Daily Show, Supermarket Sweep v.2, or even her podcast “The Fckry” and now you can see her in person at the Plaza Live. Her comedy is audacious, unapologetic, topical and perfectly suited for the moment. 8 p.m., Plaza Live, 425 N. Bumby Ave., plazaliveorlando.org, $66-$178.

Oct. 11-12: Winter Park Autumn Art Festival

Celebrate local arts this fall at the 52nd Annual Winter Park Autumn Art Festival, the only juried fine art festival exclusively featuring Florida artists. Hosted by the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce, this weekender transforms Central Park into an outdoor gallery. Attendees can also enjoy live music, local entertainment, children’s activities and a welcoming festival atmosphere. Central Park, 251 S. Park Ave., Winter Park, winterpark.org, free.

Sunday, Oct. 12: Rocky Horror Picture Show 50th Anniversary

Oh Rocky, has the Dr. Phil got a shadowcast for you. To mark a half-century of the seminal, genderfluid, glammy midnight monster musical, Rocky Horror Picture Show screens at our most lavish downtown venue. Probably no rice-throwing during this one, but to make up for it, special guests from the film will be in the castle: Barry “Brad” Bostwick, along with accidental gothic style icons Nell “Columbia” Campbell and Patricia “Magenta” Quinn. VIP meet-and-greets seem essential. 7:30 p.m., Walt Disney Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $46-$300.

Tuesday, Oct. 14: We Wiggle Dolls: A DIY Puppet Cabaret (For Adults)

Brooklyn-born “DIY puppet cabaret” (go onnnnnn) We Wiggle Dolls comes to Conduit as part of a fall tour that promises to upend your notions of puppetry in the same way Miss Pussycat, Poncili Creacion and The Vourdalak did. We Wiggle Dolls push the art form forward, both technically — techniques and construction — and, obviously, thematically, as a more grown-up endeavor. Featuring on the night will be Naughty Little No Good, Puppet Parts Productions, Yellowlemonshapedrock and Chaz Lord from Drippy Eye Projections. You should enter this with no expectations. We certainly are …. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $19.90.

Downtown Arts District hosts the annual Dia de Los Muertos & Monster Party Credit: courtesy image

Thursday, Oct. 16: Día de los Muertos & Monster Party

Downtown Art District’s spooky arts party returns with the 16th Annual Día de los Muertos and Monster Party at CityArts. The evening opens with two dynamic exhibitions: a Día de los Muertos showcase featuring traditional ofrendas and catrina dolls, and a monster-inspired gallery of spooky art by local and international artists. Outside on Pine Street, the festivities spill into a lively block party with food, drinks, entertainment and vendors. A frighteningly good time for all. 6 p.m., CityArts Orlando, 39 S. Magnolia Ave., downtownartsdistrict.com/ddlm, free.

Orlando-Ballet presents “Swan Lake” Credit: Israel Zavaleta Escobedo, courtesy Orlando Ballet

    Oct. 16-19: Swan Lake

Orlando Ballet kicks off their 2025/2026 season with a double dose of classic Tchaikovsky chestnuts. Of course The Nutcracker will dance in the winter holiday season, but starting things off this fall is the romantic Russian composer’s elegant and lovelorn Swan Lake, featuring choreography by Christopher Stowell and live scoring from the Orlando Philharmonic. Past productions of this iconic heartbreaker have never failed to impress, so expectations are high. Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $43-$200.

Spooky Empire (2024) Credit: Matt Keller Lehman

    Oct. 31-Nov. 2: Spooky Empire

Alongside the likes of Halloween Horror Nights, Phantasmagoria and Nosferatu, one of the ghoulish gems in Orlando’s Halloween crown has to be Spooky Empire. This horror-focused fandom fest provides hearty attendees with cosplay, vendors, panels and film screenings by the metric ton. But this year — and we really mean it this time — is all about the celebrity guests. It’s a terrifying bonanza with the likes of Elvira, Parker Posey, David “Art the Clown” Thornton, Chris Jericho, Method Man, Bill Moseley, Tom Savini, Nivek Ogre from Skinny Puppy, several Jasons, the cast of It, Frank from Hellraiser … we could go on, but go see for yourself (if you dare). Hyatt Regency Orlando, 9801 International Drive, spookyempire.com, $40-$299.

Sunday, Nov. 1: Beer Bacon & BBQ

Altamonte becomes the promised land for carnivores as the Beer Bacon & BBQ Festival sizzles. The name pretty much says it all; the focus is squarely on the array of roughly 40 craft beers ready for quaffing as well as meaty decadence of the bacon and barbecue (or both!) varieties proffered by local spots like Smoke in the City BBQ, Phat Ash Bakes, Big John’s Rockin’ BBQ, Heart and Soul Food Truck and more. There will be live music and games, but you might be too blissed out in a porky food coma-slash-nirvana. 2 p.m., Cranes Roost Park, 274 Cranes Roost Blvd., Altamonte Springs, beerbaconandbbq.com, $41.93.

    Wednesday, Nov. 5: Doug Stanhope

Amid the bounty of righteous comedic anger we’ve got headed our way this fall, Doug Stanhope stands tall as perhaps the one radiating the most confrontational fury. Stanhope, like a latter-day Bill Hicks, is not afraid to alienate — or maybe provoke thought — as he rails against the fractured American way, clad in a rumpled thrift-store suit like a crooner with nothing to lose, with maybe a dash or two of Howard Beale for spice. 6 p.m., Funny Bone, 9101 International Drive, orlando.funnybone.com, $54-$84.

Jonathan Van Ness Credit: courtesy image

Saturday, Nov. 8: Jonathan Van Ness

Queer Eye star and ethereal delight Jonathan Van Ness is setting out on another leg of their “Hot & Healed” stand-up tour, on the fashionable heels of the release of their debut comedy special, Fun & Slutty. Van Ness promises a new and different take from what fans saw on Fun, considering the bleak current sociopolitical landscape. “It’s a lot of Republican stuff. It’s a lot of trans commentary on living as a gender-nonconforming person in this time,” Van Ness told GLAAD, describing their new material. “I’m also dealing more with racism than I ever have … white people … honey … we got to talk about it.” 8 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., entertainment.hardrock.com, $48-$142.

  • Collective Echo brings healing and community through outré art to Audubon Park – Orlando Weekly

    [ad_1]

An ambitious new multigenre “wellness experience” — step back, winger yoga-moms and RFK Jr. cosplayers, it’s not that type of wellness — returns this weekend with perhaps their most rounded-out event yet.

Taking over Audubon Park watering hole Redlight Redlight, the hybrid LGBTQ+, gothic and alternative gathering features artists, vendors, DJs, live music and alt-drag. It’s an event with intention, though: The focus is on community gathering and healing through sound. To that end, sound-bath sonics come courtesy of Eva Strangelace and Tuesday; Doug Rhodehamel will set up an installation, and there will even be guided meditation. The drag contingent for the evening is Sue Cyde, Anesthesia, Medusha and De Sastre.

Against all odds, these meld harmoniously!

  • The Plaza Live gets Condamned this weekend courtesy V Bar and Ren Theatre players – Orlando Weekly

    [ad_1]

V Bar takes over Plaza Live Credit: Courtesy

This will be the second week of the V Bar —the vampiric drag event usually paired with Nosferatu and staged at the Renaissance Theatre — residency at the Plaza Live, cheekily dubbed Condamned.

The name comes from city officials shutting down and effectively condemning the Ivanhoe Village venue for construction issues and code violations. This couldn’t come at a worse time for the Ren: The immersive and spooky extravaganza that is Nosferatu is both the theater’s most ambitious undertaking and biggest moneymaker of the year.

As the time of writing, there are no developments in the Ren’s talks with the city to resolve the issue. But while Nosferatu is just too involved to be staged anywhere else, V Bar has hopped over to the Plaza Live.

And it’s worth your time to darken the doors of this Milk District venue to see local drag luminaries like Coco Cavalli, Myki Meeks, Orusha San Miguel, Beatrixxx Oddity, Black Magix Royal, Angelica Sanchez and Allegra D all putting on their undead best. Expect some of the Nosferatu players to be lurking and causing mischief as well, we’d wager.

Fangs crossed they can go back to the Ren soon.

    9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, The Plaza Live, 425 N. Bumby Ave., rentheatre.org, $44-$108.

  • Off the Record drag night hops from the Ren to the Social for ‘Condemned’ event Wednesday – Orlando Weekly

    [ad_1]

OTR gets condemned at the Social Credit: @jakepearce231

Best of Orlando®-winning Wednesday drag event Off the Record, usually headquartered at the Ren Theatre, hops downtown this week for a guest spot cheekily dubbed “Condemned.”

The Renaissance Theatre Co. in Ivanhoe Village was condemned by the city as of Friday afternoon, after an annual inspection by the fire department, effectively shutting down all events and operations at the theater.

The folks at the Ren are currently working with city officials to address these issues, with the hope that the space may be reopened in the coming weeks. Per Watermark, the City released a statement on Monday confirming that work is underway: “The City is actively working with the business to address and correct these violations, but until all code and safety issues are resolved, the property will remain condemned.”

For the queens of OTR, though, there will be no break. This Wednesday sees the cheekily named “Condemned” happening at the Social on Orange Avenue, business as usual with resident performers Allegra, Coco Cavalli, Myki Meeks and Black Magix Royal. Some special guests are along for the ride too this week: Eris Thee Doll, Kitty Kalico and the one and only Icesis Couture, winner of Season 2 of Canada’s Drag Race.

“We’re working with the great folks in the City to get back to the Ren, but in the meantime, we bring you a special theme for the times: OTR: Condemned,” read the announcement on the OTR instagram Monday, complete with digital flyers that mimic the garish hues of the “Condemned” signs plastered all over the Ren Friday. “Dress like a highlighter, drape yourself in caution tape, and come out and show us what OTR means to you.”

Off the Record presents “Condemned” at the Social on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 10 p.m. Tickets will run from $13-$23 and are available through the Ren.

  • Orlando drag performer Dollya Black to compete on new season of ‘Dragula: Titans’ – Orlando Weekly

    [ad_1]

Dollya Black returns to the world of Dragula Credit: Courtesy

Orlando performer Dollya Black has just been announced as a contestant on the upcoming season of all-star drag competition The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula: Titans.

This will mark her return to the dark drag underworld of the Boulet Brothers-helmed reality competition. Black had previously been a contestant on Season 3 of Dragula in 2019, where she was runner-up to winner and “Supermonster” Landon Cider.

Aside from Black, 13 other horror- and alt-drag notables — including Evah Destruction, Blackberri, Jade Jolie and Priscilla Chambers — will compete to win the crown of “Queen of the Underworld” and $100,000. The winner of the first season of Dragula: Titans was Orlando’s own Victoria Elizabeth Black.

Some of the confirmed guest judges aiding and abetting the Boulets include Jennifer Tilly, Alice Cooper, Peaches Christ and Todd McFarlane.

Black, a longtime and adventurous Orlando drag artist, came out as a trans woman over the summer. “Been on a journey of discovery that led me to starting hormones almost 6 months ago,” she said on Instagram at the time. “Officially going by She/They pronouns (“She” as in Lady Death, “They” as in an elf iykyk).”

Dragula: Titans Season 2 is set to debut Tuesday, Oct. 7, on Shudder, perfectly timed for spooky season.

Hamburger Mary’s to close downtown location, looks to relocate

    [ad_1]

After nearly two decades in downtown Orlando, storied LGBTQ+-owned restaurant Hamburger Mary’s will close its doors and look for a new location.

Owner John Paonessa announced on Facebook Wednesday evening the last day of operation for the 110 W. Church St. location will be Sunday, June 2.

Paonessa says times have changed and points to a decrease in evening business at the location. Hamburger Mary’s plans to reopen in a different location, although a new location has yet to be announced.

“We are in negotiations/talks with a couple of venues that we feel will be an excellent fit for our brand. However, if anyone knows of a space that you think looks like a good fit for Marys, we are all ears,” the post reads.

Earlier this month, the City of Orlando began limiting nighttime access to parking garages in the downtown core. Business owners and nightlife workers took to social media to express dismay.

First opened in 2008, Hamburger Mary’s downtown Orlando location has served as a community hub for drag and live entertainment, known for its drag brunch and drag bingo events.

Last year, the restaurant sued the state of Florida over a new law that contained penalties for venues that host any type of “adult live performance” with children under 18 present. The law was widely interpreted as a way for the state to punish and restrict venues that host drag events. The lawsuit resulted in a block on the law statewide.

“This bill has nothing to do with children, and everything to do with the continued oppression of the LGBTQ+ community,” Hamburger Mary’s co-owner John Paonessa wrote in a statement on the restaurant’s Facebook page after the lawsuit was filed in 2023.

Camp Slasher host Allie Slasher performing in 2023

With summer right around the corner, the timing of upcoming drag event Camp Slasher couldn’t be better.

Presented by La Petite Mort, the production vehicle for Super Passive’s Allie Slasher, Camp Slasher aims to present an evening of drag themed around the best/worst of  summer-camp slasher flicks of the 1980s — think Friday the 13th, The Burning or Sleepaway Camp — and the ridiculous and gratuitous kills within. (Side note: Did you know there was a slasher film made in Orlando in the 1990s about a killer tree surgeon? There was!)

The lineup promises new and familiar faces alike in the form of Sue Cyde, Draggedy Anne, Davi Oddity, Anesthesia, Amnesia Effect and Papi Takami alongside Allie Slasher.

Previous iterations of La Petite Mort events at Will’s Pub have been eye-popping collisions of horror-themed drag that verges on performance art (complete with performers not averse to a little friendly confrontation), put on in front of crowds that get bigger every time out.

There’s also an open stage following the two shows, though you have to register in advance to participate. There are some games and competitions in addition to the drag performances as well.

Camp Slasher happens Monday, May 6, at 8 p.m. at Will’s Pub. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Garden of Eden drag and dinner showcase happens at The Heavy this weekend

A meal and a drag show is a time-honored tradition; locally you can partake at the likes of Hamburger Mary’s, Hammered Lamb and Island Time, among other worthies. We’re spotlighting this one because it’s — to our knowledge — the first time that a drag show is happening at the truly charming Winter Park plant emporium The Heavy.

The aptly named Garden of Eden features vendors serving up food and drinks in the charming ambience of The Heavy, along with a slate of creative alt-drag performers doing two sets. You can sample sips and bites from the likes of Cholo Dogs, Kraken’s Drowned Nuts, Hanalei shaved ice, the Will’s Pub mobile bar and more. (Sidebar: Cholo Dogs and performance-art adjacent drag in the same building? Pinch us.)

Performers set for the evening include hostess and promising newcomer Eden Heartz, Amnesia Effect, Davi Oddity, E and Reb3l.

Is this Orlando drag’s Plantasia moment? Yes.
