Aerosmith have added an Orlando date to their farewell tour

Veteran rockers Aerosmith have expanded their “Peace Out” farewell tour, adding a handful of shows that include a brand-new date in Orlando next year.

The band’s “Peace Out” jaunt — with blues-rockers the Black Crowes along for the ride as touring openers — kicks off in Pittsburgh this fall. “Peace Out” celebrates 50 years’ worth of Aerosmith music, with a setlist pulling  from all eras of the band’s discography.

Originally kicking off last year, the “Peace Out” run was postponed after a few shows, when singer Steven Tyler suffered a vocal injury. This week’s announcement sees all dates rescheduled, and even a couple of new shows added. The tour includes only one other Florida date, on Valentine’s Day 2025.

Aerosmith and the Black Crowes play the Kia Center on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025. Tickets go on sale Friday, April 12, through Ticketmaster.

Tatiana Eva-Marie lands in Orlando for two nights of gypsy jazz sounds

Everyone’s absolutely agog about Judson’s Live right now for good reason. But, while the Dr. Phillips Center’s newest, most intimate and most accessible listening room has been hopping with many acts, perhaps none so far are as ideally suited to this spot’s supper-club concept than Tatiana Eva-Marie.

Although she’s NYC-based right now, this bright young songbird’s pedigree has both French and Balkan roots, so the heritage of Gypsy jazz is in her actual blood. She exhales vintage allure with revivalist jazz-manouche stylings that will quantum-leap you right back to the swinging club scene of 1930s Paris, tout de suite. So tip that bottle and pass the Gauloises, mes amours. (Well, maybe save that last part for outside after the show.)

Eva-Marie has been a regular feature at premier NYC jazz joints like Birdland, Blue Note and Dizzy’s. Now, see her classic glow fully unleash the spirit that Judson’s Live was painstakingly designed to embody.

OW: A two-night stand allows you more freedom; do you have anything special planned for these shows?

TEM: We are going to play some selections from my upcoming album Djangology, a tribute to Django Reinhardt which will be released on June 7 on GroundUP Music, but I am also going to add some Parisian and Gypsy jazz classics to the repertoire. I might even take up the guitar myself and sing you an old Gypsy folk song in the Rromanes language.

When did Django Reinhardt’s music really start to resonate with you?

I actually discovered Django through Stéphane Grappelli, because my mother is a violinist and obviously a big fan; it was always playing at home when I was a kid. When I moved to Paris as a teenager, I discovered a swarm of guitarists: Gypsy jazz (jazz manouche in French) was everywhere, on every street corner, in every café. To me, it became the soundtrack of the city. It’s such a distinct sound, which somehow
is not at all stuck in time.

Would you talk a little bit about the science of Djangology (we’re not joking!)?

You think you’re joking, but there is an academic side to my personality I keep secret! The aim of this project is to celebrate Django “the composer.” Everyone is so blown away by his guitar wizardry that we too often forget what an interesting and unusual com- poser he was, influenced not only by American popular music and French musette, but also classical music of his time.

Another important influence was the folk music of the Manouche people, descendants of Rromani tribes who left India about 1,000 years ago, living nomadically then settling in various regions in Europe, integrating local cultures into their own.

All of this is so rich, full of rhythms and musical colors, so inspiring for me as a singer reimagining Django’s instrumental music as stories I can tell, with original lyrics and new arrangements. I try to showcase all of these different influences in my homage, onstage and on the album. And this is just the first chapter of a “Django songbook” I will keep adding to!

    7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday-Saturday, April 5-6, Judson’s Live.

Descendents join Circle Jerks at an Orlando sow in mere days

Everything old can be made new (and angry), especially when it comes to evergreen punk legends the Descendents.

The band is bringing their new tour to the House of Blues Sunday. The Descendents, composed of Milo Aukerman (vocals), Karl Alvarez (bass), Bill Stevenson (drums) and Stephen Egerton (guitar), formed in 1977 over their shared love for “fishing, girls and velocity” — and, of course, copious amounts of coffee.

After playing shows on and off for more than four decades, the Descendents are now back on the road accompanied by Circle Jerks and Adolescents. The 22-stop North American leg of the tour comes (a bit) after the 2021 release of their latest album, 9th and Walnut.

The Descendents’ proto pop-punk sound has given the underground a wealth of jittery hardcore ballads about heartbreak, friendship, the difficulties of growing up and more — then-rare vulnerability that was seismically game-changing for the genre. Despite not releasing new music in three years, this Descendents tour is expected to sell out. So get caffeinated and make your purchase.

6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 31, House of Blues.

The Za-Boo-Zays will perform at the first Judson’s Live brunch.

New Dr. Phillips Center venue Judson’s Live is about to get into the brunch business, with a hearty helping of live music.

Starting in late April, the theater hosts a Sunday brunch series that combines local music — kicking off with all-star folk trio the Za-Boo-Zays — with a themed brunch menu devised by the Dr. Phil’s executive chef, Jason Klingensmith.

“We want this new brunch series to transport guests to a place where the room’s music meets its savory counterparts,” said Klingensmith in a press statement.

    The lineup so far includes:

    Sunday, April 21
    Southern Brunch: The Za-Boo-Zays

    Sunday, May 19
New Orleans Brunch: Brown Bag Brass Band

    Sunday, June 16
    Blues Brunch

    Sunday, July 21
    R&B and Soul Brunch

    Sunday, Aug. 18
    Latin Brunch

The brunch concerts start at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. Tickets are available for the first of the Judson’s Live brunch events through the Dr. Phillips Center.

Trick Daddy plays Orlando as part of Music Fest ORL

Despite its decidedly bare-bones name, the minimalist moniker of Music Fest ORL conceals a top-shelf roster of hip-hop and R&B heavyweights.

How about the likes of Keith Sweat, Trick Daddy, Trina, Levelle, Sunshine Anderson, Naomi Joy, Carmen Harrell, Tyesha Williams and Tank, just for starters? Taking place outdoors at the Orlando Amphitheater — don’t sleep on this venue — and, barring unforeseen rain, this should be a perfectly soundtracked way to while away a weekend.

If you need that extra helping of kicks, Tricky Daddy is hosting the official afterparty at XPerience on Colonial Drive later that same evening.

    1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, Orlando Amphitheater.

Waterparks are back in Orlando this month

Orlando has its fair share of waterparks, but there was one missing … Waterparks (the band) is coming to House of Blues.

The pop-punk group behind “I Miss Having Sex but At Least I Don’t Wanna Die Anymore” and “Turbulent” will be making a stop to visit the City Beautiful on their tour on Tuesday, March 26.

Leading the group is frontman Awsten Knight, supported by drummer Otto Wood and lead guitarist Geoff Wigington. The group has been making music and building a solid base for 12 years, including a fervent fanbase in Orlando that filled Park Ave CDs to the brim during a meet-and-greet and in-store performance following the release of their record “Greatest Hits.”

At House of Blues, the band is set to perform songs from their past five albums and maybe a cover or two. Waterparks’ concerts are known for being high-energy with crowd-surfing and mosh pits — let’s see if this Disney Springs venue lets that happen.

Loveless, an alternative rock duo from Los Angeles, and Pollyanna, an Australian indie rock band, will open the show.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and ticket prices range from $35 to $85.

Jazz superstar Christian McBride lands in Orlando for a three-night run at Judson’s Live

    [ad_1]

Christian McBride plays Orlando for three nights this week

The brilliant and busy Christian McBride comes our way with a few sets at Judson’s Live this week.

Apart from his duties as one of the most prominent jazz bassists working today, McBride seemingly does it all (with the Grammys to show for it): broadcasting his long-running series “Jazz Night in America,” curating festivals, working as an educator, and playing with a whirlwind mix of who’s who and who’s new. The maestro and his band arrive for a three-day residency from Thursday-Saturday, March 14-16.

These performances catch him at the crossroads of recent output and a new release, the beautifully intense Prime and the soulful new-grass counterpoint of But Who’s Gonna Play the Melody with fellow bassist Edgar Meyer.

Which leaves the question, “What are we going to hear when he’s here?” A phone call later …

Christian McBride: The record with Edgar, it’s funny, the president of Mack Avenue Records [where we released] it, called me to tell me it has received the most amount of pre-orders since your Conversations With Christian album. He’s excited and so am I. I think so many people are so curious about an album with two bass players who don’t play the same kind of music. Like, “What’s going on?!?” Sounds like people are really excited about this.

Orlando Weekly: We’re excited, knowing your sound and Meyer’s — more on the classical and bluegrass side — but like you he stays busy working with a wide array of artists.
He’s another person who has a lot of different projects going on. He’s got his thing with Bela Fleck, and his thing with Zakir Hussein, or he’s debuting some orchestral work somewhere. We both knock around playing a lot of stuff.

One of the two tracks available on Bandcamp, “Barnyard Disturbance,” has these great bluesy melodies floating around like two different wind currents moving the same leaf around. One is Meyer and the other is you.
That is not inaccurate. (laughs) Thank you.

Are we going to hear some of this during your stay?
No. When I come to Orlando I’m bringing my current band: Nicole Glover, Ely Perlman, Mike King and Savannah Harris. Not a totally new band but we still have that “new car smell” and my first all-millennial band. Neither material from my latest releases.

We’ve been following all of those players for awhile, all of them are dynamite.
What we will be playing will be a whole different thing. I’m going to be releasing a 7″ of this band soon, on my label Brother Mister. So what’s the music like … that’s such a broad question because people hear music so differently. If I give references it can tie the listeners with what to expect.

Weezer, Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. are coming to the Kia Center

It’s a veritable triumvirate of 1990s nostalgia! Weezer, Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. are coming to Orlando this fall as part of a just-announced tour.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their fan-favorite Blue Album, Weezer will be playing the album in full nightly. The entirety of the bill is pretty eye-popping, however, with Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. along for the ride as touring openers.

The “Voyage to the Blue Planet” run kicks off in early September in St. Paul, Minnesota, finally snaking its way southward later in the month. Aside from the Sept. 20 arena show in Orlando, your only other opportunity in Florida to catch this touring tandem is in Hollywood on Sept. 21.

If memory serves (and it often doesn’t), this will be the first Weezer show locally in more than a few years — the last being a headlining slot on the late, lamented Florida Man Fest.

Weezer, Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. play the Kia Center on Friday, Sept. 20. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 15,  through Ticketmaster.

The Eagles said one last goodbye to Orlando this week

On a Monday night in Orlando, we were transported to a realm where timeless rock melodies reigned supreme when The Eagles brought their “The Long Goodbye Tour” to the Kia Center. From the moment attendees began to trickle into the venue, it was evident that this was no ordinary concert; it was a gathering of loyal fans spanning generations, reminiscent of a community rather than a mere audience, a testament to The Eagles’ remarkable 52-year legacy in the music industry.

Drawing devotees from all walks of life, the concert began with a notable deviation from the norm: Attendees were asked to refrain from using their cellphones to capture moments from both the opening act, Steely Dan, and The Eagles’ headlining performance. This policy, reportedly initiated by The Eagles themselves, was accompanied by another request for concertgoers to remain seated throughout the show, all in consideration of the aging demographic of their fanbase.

A juxtaposition of collectivism versus individualism ensued as security personnel enforced these rules. Witnessing the swift ejection of those who disregarded these guidelines, including a particularly memorable incident involving an obstinate fan in the second row, underscored the seriousness with which The Eagles’ wishes were upheld. It was definitely a lesson in respecting your elders, if nothing else.

Yet, far from feeling stifled, the Kia Center buzzed with an energy that was both serene and electric. Freed from the distractions of modern concert gimmicks and our cellphones, the audience was able to forge a profound connection with the music, relishing the ageless melodies of The Eagles in real time. In an era marked by chaos and uncertainty, this respite from the world felt like a gift, a two-hour escape to a space where only music mattered.

The Eagles reaffirmed their status as rock icons throughout the performance, effortlessly commanding the stage with a prowess that belied their decades-long career. Their hits resonated with renewed vigor, serving as a testament to the enduring power of their music.

The Eagles’ “The Long Goodbye Tour” was more than just a concert; it was a celebration of a legacy, a testament to the enduring bond between musicians and their fans. As the final chords echoed through the Kia Center, it was clear that The Eagles had delivered on their promise of a transcendent musical experience … for one last time.

One of the last stops on Armand Hammer’s tour is in Orlando

Left-field NYC rap duo Armand Hammer is finally touring behind last year’s stunning new album We Buy Diabetic Test Trips, and Orlando gets a listening session next week.

We Buy is a more loose-limbed undertaking for Elucid and Billy Woods, even by the duo’s own adventurous standards. The album grew out of a jam session and the free (jazz) and easy flow of the music spurs on the two MCs to ever-greater heights of nonlinear, space-is-the-place wonder.

The finished album featured contributions from everyone from JPEGMAFIA and EL-P to Moor Mother and Junglepussy, along with plenty of live instrumentation. But that’s not the only new material Armand Hammer are touring behind.

They’ll be previewing new material from BLK LBL, a surprise vinyl-only release with contributions from Dreamcrusher and Aesop Rock, and selling copies of the LP.

Thursday’s show at The Social is the penultimate show of their tour, the only Florida engagement and a rare chance to snatch up a copy of BLK LBL, so drag your carcass out on a weeknight because this will be a dizzying affair.

    7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, The Social.

Justin Timberlake is free to ‘forget tomorrow’ but please don’t forget Orlando

Justin Timberlake on Friday added 15 new shows to his “Forget Tomorrow World Tour,” and Orlando is one of his new destinations.

Timberlake originally announced the first leg of the Forget Tomorrow tour, the singer’s first in five years, on old pal Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show back in January. That tour runs from April to June, kicking off in Canada and ending in Kentucky.

This new run of fall dates kicks off in October, and now includes an Orlando stop at the Kia Center downtown in early November. The only other fall Florida stop is in Sunrise. (There is, however, a summer show in Tampa in June, if you want to do double-duty.)

Timberlake releases his new album, Everything I Thought It Was, in March, so expect to hear some of those songs on the road.

Justin Timberlake plays the Kia Center on Saturday, Nov 9. Tickets go on sale Thursday, Feb. 15, through Ticketmaster.

Mastodon return to (Central) Florida this summer

Get ready to rock out this summer with Lamb of God and Mastodon as they bring their Ashes of Leviathan Tour to Orlando.

The heavy twosome tour is a co-headlining trek named after and marking the 20th anniversary of their albums Ashes of the Wake and Leviathan. Both bands promise to play full-album sets.

The tour kicks off in mid-July in Texas, before heading to Florida for two shows — Jacksonville on July 23 and Orlando on July 24.

Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Lamb of God applies an extreme metal makeover to their heavenly name with songs like “Walk With Me in Hell” and “Laid to Rest.”

Tourmates Mastodon, from Atlanta, are far from extinct, with a discography of 14 albums stacked with heavy anthems like “Blood and Thunder” and “Oblivion.”

The two bands bring their co-headlining tour to the Orlando Amphitheater, accompanied by special guests Kerry King and Malevolence on Wednesday, July 24.
