Universal Orlando is filling a Shrekzel-shaped hole in theme park goers lives.

DreamWorks Land, the new world filled with Shrek, Trolls and Kung Fu Panda, is now open at Universal — along with a CineSational lagoon show and Hogwarts Always projection show.

DreamWorks Land fills the space formerly taken up by Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone. The Nuthouse Coaster may be history, but Universal ensured its replacement remained just as kid-friendly. The only ride in the area is the Trolls Trollercoaster. Play areas, snack stands, shows and character encounters make up the remainder of DreamWorks land.

Movie fans can also dine at Trolls– and Shrek-themed snack kiosks. Menu items are mostly cinematic twists on familiar favorites — like the Shrekzel, a Shrek-shaped soft pretzel, or the Poppy-licious Pink and BroZone Berry ice creams.

Here’s a look at the Universal attractions now open in DreamWorks Land and two new light shows.

    Shrek’s Swamp Meet

The character encounter Shrek’s Swamp Meet takes place outside the green ogre’s 35-foot cottage, where guests can meet and take pictures with Shrek, Fiona and Donkey.

Movie characters at theme park meet-and-greets usually stay silent, but Donkey chats with guests with full-on Eddie Murphy swagger, so be prepared to bring some of your most burning questions about life in the Swamp or his wife, Dragon, if you visit.

    Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres

With four slides, a wet play zone and a colorful playground, Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres is a play area designed for the youngest park visitors. The area also features a Pinocchio animatronic whose nose sprouts as he tells white lies.

    King Harold’s Swamp Symphony

Kids’ play area King Harold’s Swamp Symphony invites guests to stand on lily pads in front of a frog-studded log. Stomping on the pads triggers the frogs to croak in a symphony of ribbits.

    Mama Luna Feline Fiesta

The Puss in Boots: The Last Wish film came out less than two years ago, but it already has a presence in the new land. Mama Luna’s house features a digital screen with hundreds of cats visitors can play with using bells, maracas and buttons.

    Trolls Trollercoaster

The Trolls Trollercoaster is DreamWorks Land’s only ride, and it’s designed with kids in mind, with a minimum height requirement of 36 inches (compared to The Incredible Hulk Coaster’s 54-inch requirement).

The ride doesn’t go upside-down, but it does lean heavily into its source material — riders take a seat in the caterpillar Caterbus before joining the movie’s protagonists Poppy, Tiny, Satin and Chenille in an escape from “spooky spiders.”

    Poppy’s Playground

Poppy’s Playground is another kid zone, where a 20-foot mushroom extends over a field of Trolls flowers and mushroom swings for little parkgoers.

    Po Live!

The central attraction of Kung Fu Panda protagonist Po’s village is a digital screen where Po appears to chat with the crowd and lead a group kung fu session. Po’s cousin Ling-Ling makes an appearance in the virtual character meet, which repeats every 20 minutes.

    Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp

As another kid zone, Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp stands out for its interactive water features — including cannons and dump buckets — which Universal assures visitors will leave them soaked.

The play zone also has giant fans, gongs and merry-go-round noodle bowls.

    DreamWorks Character Zone

In a break from DreamWorks Land’s focus on Trolls, Kung Fu Panda and Shrek, the DreamWorks Character Zone offers the chance to meet Gabby from the animated kid’s show Gabby’s Dollhouse — as well as other characters, according to the attraction’s website.

    DreamWorks Imagination Celebration

DreamWorks Imagination Celebration brings together characters from all three of the area’s featured film franchises in a 20-minute live show. The multi-sensory show combines live actors, animated characters and dancers.

    CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular

Located in Universal Studios alongside DreamWorks Land, CineSational is the park’s new lagoon show. It features soundtracks from several Universal films, including Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Jaws and the Minions franchise, according to a release.

The show will include 228 water fountains that extend up to 131 feet.

The CineSational show takes the place of the Cinematic Celebration, which was shown at the same central lagoon and ran from 2018 until 2023. Like its replacement, Cinematic Celebration also featured franchises like Harry Potter and Jurassic World.

    Hogwarts Always Castle Projection Show

The Hogwarts Always show is the only new attraction unveiled Friday in Universal Islands of Adventure. The nighttime show is set against the backdrop of the Hogwarts castle and will feature visuals from the Harry Potter films.

Universal confirmed in a release Friday the show will feature the Hogwarts Express and the Sorting Ceremony.

The show will be available on select nights, but Universal has not provided a calendar of scheduled showings. The new show replaces “The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle,” which ran from 2018 until 2023.

The new light show will tie Potterheads over until the 2025 opening of Universal’s Epic Universe.

The upcoming five-world park is still under construction for now, but the Epic Universe Preview Center is now open at Universal CityWalk. Those looking forward to challenging Bowser in Super Nintendo World or soaring with Hiccup on the How to Train Your Dragon wing glider coaster will have to keep practicing their fire-breathing and dragon-saddling techniques a little while longer.

  • Almost there: Disney begins ride testing Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, introduces new critter characters

Almost there: Disney begins ride testing Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, introduces new critter characters

Disney World is so close to opening Tiana’s Bayou Adventure that fans can already hear snippets of “Dig a Little Deeper” as Imagineers test the new musical water ride.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set to open over the summer at Magic Kingdom. With some construction walls coming down and signs announcing to guests that crewed ride testing is underway, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this attraction open around the unofficial start of summer at the end of May.

But while we await an official opening date, fans have been excitedly sharing photos and videos from the park.

Recent videos of ride testing show attraction creators sporting safety vests and ponchos as they plunge the ride’s 50-foot grand finale drop. One of the recent riders was Charita Carter, Imagineer and executive creative producer of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

Throughout construction, Disney Parks Blog has shared big and small details that bring the attraction to life and set it apart from its Splash Mountain roots. That includes murals, metalwork and the audio-animatronic figure of Princess Tiana guests will meet on the ride.

Recently, Disney introduced the first cast of new characters created for the ride’s story. These new “critter musicians” become some of the stars of Tiana’s celebratory party.

The bayou band comprises Byhalia the beaver, Gritty the rabbit, Beau the opossum, Apollo the raccoon, Rufus the turtle and Timoléon the otter. Together they crank out a Zydeco musical rendition of “Gonna Take You There” from The Princess and the Frog.

Of course, a new Disney attraction means new merch, and plushies of Beau, Apollo and Rufus will be available when the attraction opens.

Set after the events of the 2009 animated film, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure brings back Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen, jazz-loving alligator Louis and other characters for a music-filled ride through the bayou as they prepare to host a raucous Mardi Gras party.

Billed as a celebration of 1920s New Orleans, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure features recognizable characters and new ones created just for the ride. All that and new music from Grammy award-winning artists PJ Morton and Terence Blanchard, who played Louis the alligator’s trumpet parts in the film.

The ride was announced in 2020 as a replacement for Splash Mountain, which was open from 1992 to 2023 at Disney World.

  • Icon Park files proposals for new entertainment venue, hotels and shops

Icon Park files proposals for new entertainment venue, hotels and shops

An entertainment venue, two hotels and several retail locations comprise the new additions proposed for Icon Park, according to Orange County court filings and a report from GrowthSpotter.

At the center of the proposal, the 409-seat entertainment venue is anticipated to be a one-story building at the base of the Orlando Eye, previously known as The Wheel at Icon Park prior to the attraction’s acquisition by Merlin Entertainments this week.

The new retail locations would be built on two lots on the northwestern corner of I-Drive and Via Mercado with an additional 5,827-square-foot retail development to also go up on the northern edge of the park’s property.

One of these additions is proposed for the lot that currently holds the Orlando SlingShot, suggesting the ride could be removed from the park. The Orlando SlingShot was a neighboring ride to the Orlando FreeFall, the ride from which Orlando teen Tyre Sampson fell to his death in March, 2022.

Further into the future, two new hotels, collectively holding 550 rooms, are proposed to be built on the eastern side of the property in a pair of parking lots off Universal Boulevard. These hotels would join the various accomodation options already available in the area, such as the Element Orlando Universal Boulevard and the Castle Hotel.

“The hotels are part of a future phase and aren’t part of the latest development application submitted to the County. The main component of that application is an entertainment venue,” GrowthSpotter reports.

  • Icon Park’s Wheel renamed Orlando Eye in Merlin Entertainments purchase

Formerly known as The Wheel, Icon Park’s 400-foot tall observation Ferris wheel gets both a (not-so-) new owner and a (not-so-) new name this week.

The I-Drive attraction was purchased Monday by Merlin Entertainments, an entertainment company with tourist attractions in countries across the world, and given back its original name, The Orlando Eye.

Merlin previously owned and operated the attraction when it first opened, from 2015 to 2018. The latest name comes in a long line of identity changes for the ride. From the Coca-Cola Orlando Eye to The Wheel, this is the attraction’s fifth rename in less than a decade.

Merlin owns several other attractions in Orlando including Legoland Florida Park and Resort, Sea Life Orlando Aquarium and Madame Tussauds Orlando. (Those last two are sited in Icon Park, as is the observation wheel.)

“The Orlando Eye by Merlin Entertainments will become an unmissable stop on visitors’ itineraries, delivering an elevated experience with unobstructed 360-degree views of the Icon Park area and beyond,” Merlin Entertainments CEO Scott O’Neil said in a release.

Chris Jaskiewicz, president and CEO of Icon Park, is also working toward growth in the park, which he believes aligns with Merlin Entertainments’ plans.

“We successfully built and developed it into a famous Orlando landmark, and now welcome the Orlando Eye by Merlin Entertainments as one of our outstanding Icon Park tenants,” Jaskiewicz said.

The Orlando Eye by Merlin Entertainment is located at 8375 International Drive, and tickets can be purchased at theorlandoeye.com.

Dua Lipa’s new wax figure has been unveiled at Madame Tussauds Orlando on International Drive

Ahead of her upcoming third studio album, Radical Optimism, a new wax figure of Dua Lipa has been unveiled at Madame Tussauds Orlando on International Drive.

The new figure is only the second Dua Lipa figure in the nation. The first is in New York.

The Grammy award-winning performer is best known for her hit songs “Sweetest Pie,” “New Rules” and “Levitating,” as well as her cameo in 2023’s Barbie. Her 2020 album, Future Nostalgia, rose to fame in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and helped put her on the pop-music map.

Lipa’s statue is clad in a fuchsia Balenciaga lace catsuit with matching gloves, boots, a bedazzled choker and sparkly purple eyeshadow — inspired by one of her most memorable looks from the “Future Nostalgia” tour.

“When the world stopped in 2020, Dua Lipa was the first artist to ensure we all kept dancing in our living rooms with her smash record, Future Nostalgia,” general manager of Madame Tussauds Orlando Paul Gould said in a release. “This figure is a love letter to the superstar and album that held our spirits high during a truly unprecedented time. Her impact on pop music is inspiring, and her addition to Madame Tussauds Orlando is a celebration of her undeniable influence on culture and music across the globe.”

Fans of the pop star can now visit the I-Drive attraction to see this doppelgänger for themselves and take pictures, strike a pose, or “dance the night away” with it.

  • Make-A-Wish Kid Asks to Stay With Family in a Candy-Themed Mega Mansion

Make-A-Wish Kid Asks to Stay With Family in a Candy-Themed Mega Mansion

    Press Release

    Mar 8, 2024 09:15 EST

Owners & The Foundation Team Up To Make His Dream Come True

Often, wishes from children facing end of life reportedly range from trips to the Magic Kingdom to meet-ups with their celebrity heroes.

Recently, however, one Make-A-Wish kid thought outside the box and dreamed up a unique “first.” He wished to stay with his entire family at a unique “sugar-coated” AirBnB mega mansion near Orlando called “The Sweet Escape House.” Not only was his wish granted but the Make-A-Wish Foundation, in cooperation with the Sweet Escape’s management company, has made it possible for the boy and his family to experience a full 4 night stay at the mansion this April.

Owner & home designer Andrew Greenstein was extremely enthusiastic about the idea. “Make-A-Wish has always been one of my favorite charities. I love what they stand for,” he remarked. Smiling through tears of happiness, his wife and co-owner Belinda added: “We’re looking forward to meeting this awesome kid at check-in and ensuring that he and his family have a fantastic time!”

The Make-A-Wish family will have full access to the Sweet Escape’s 5 acres including the world’s only ice cream cone themed swimming pool, a “chocolate” waterslide, a private mini golf course, an actual ball pit bedroom, laser tag, multiple arcade rooms, virtual reality gaming, a one-of-a-kind “cereal killer” escape room game, and even a private family karaoke night club room with disco lighting.

Leave it to a child to prove that Orlando, Florida may truly be a place where even the wildest of dreams can still come true.
