Of course, we have to start with ‘Season Of The Witch.’ There’s no better Lana song that embraces the witchy season! We’re big Halloween fans over here and are always looking for an excuse to begin celebrating the season a little early, even if it is still only August.

This lyric from ‘Venice B*tch” is the perfect way to close out summer. We’ve been loving every moment of summer this year, but “nothing gold can stay” and we’re ready for some colder weather where we can bundle up by the fireplace!

“I catch a dollar in the wind and I buy a cup of coffee”

This lyric from an unreleased deep cut, ‘Fordham Road,’ encapsulates autumn so well. On the first day of September, you can find us sipping a pumpkin spice latte with a scarf wrapped around our necks, and the wind breezing through our hair. We just know Lana Del Rey is also a PSL girlie!

Red, blue, and yellow skies are preparing us for fall! ‘God Knows I Tried’ is one of our favorite Lana Del Rey songs and is definitely a contender for our autumn playlists. Our favorite sunrises and sunsets always happen during the autumn months, and we are so looking forward to these special moments with Lana’s music blasting in the background.

“Everything is bright now, no more cloudy days, even when the storms come, in the eye we’ll stay”

This lyric from ‘Religion’ takes us away from the beating sunshine and into the cloudy, stormy days of fall. Sometimes we love a cloudy day paired with a cool breeze and a warm drink in hand – there’s truly nothing more nostalgic!

We have to end with these lyrics from ‘Old Money.’ Summer nights are indeed taking a back seat to our beloved fall afternoons. Even in New York City, we’re anticipating the changing of the leaves and the impending sweater weather!

Quiet Luxury Has Gone Too Far: Why I Won’t Be Wearing Boat Shoes (But You Should?)

We’ve reached peak quiet luxury. Maybe that happened quickly, when influencers flooded the TL with that stunningly resilient trend striving to convince you that all you need to look like you stepped out of Succession was .. Zara? But now, with Stealth-Wealth and Recessioncore still topics of major interest, strange sartorial ephemera of the rich are emerging as piecemeal trends.

From tennis bracelets (and tennis, but that’s thanks to Challengers) to Van Cleef necklaces, it’s the details that become the most unlikely trends. But it’s all about how you wear them. When paired with Gen Z’s Y2K style, they become emblematic. When paired with a Zara set on a West Village girl, she’s taking it seriously.

But you’re not real if you’ve seen what I’ve seen: an army of Prep school teenagers carelessly tossing on jewelry that costs as much as their private school tuition merely to accessorize their school uniforms. And what shoes did they wear with those Spence skirts and Dalton blazers? Boat shoes, of course.

It’s an evil convergence. Prep’s stubborn return to the zeitgeist — Rowing Blazers, I’ll never forgive you — and Sofia Richie’s impact on the skyrocketing interest in Stealth-Wealth. This means people are hungrier than ever to take a peek into the lives of the rich — then steal into their walk-in closets as big as a football field and try on their clothes.

The Sofia Richie effect

It’s been a year since the iconic Richie-Grainge wedding that sparked the Gen Z obsession with old money. Since that year, we’ve slowly been creeping into territory that sends a chill down my spine.

At first I thought it was just one more microtrend. However, I was soon proven so wrong. Instead of moving on, people everywhere made Sofia Richie their style icon. For good reason — she’s a Virgo, her taste is impeccable. But just like fellow nepo-baby Hailey Baldwin-Bieber’s wedding, the stylish ceremony sparked a chain reaction I never could have predicted.

Let’s use Hailey as a case study. After she wore Nike Air Force Ones to her reception, the shoe was ubiquitous. Sorority houses didn’t know peace for years. And it didn’t stop there. Signature pieces of Hailey’s off-duty style became biblical references. Her leather jackets, baggy jeans, and Clean Look vibe were everywhere.

But once a Supreme dies, a new queen must take her place. Sofia Richie answered the call.

While her so-called “old money” looks are actually new — new and custom Chanel, she’s become the face of Stealth-Wealth. It’s worth mentioning that Sofia Richie is a nepo baby whose money and prestige comes from her father, Black pop singer Lionel Richie. She’s not the old money heiress this trend is supposed to harken back to — which, to me, feels subversive.

Nevertheless, the masses are eating it up. Sofia’s transformation from trendy party girl to Stealth-Wealth wife and mother is inspiring to all of us. Though most will never grace the rooms with those who are decked out in Loro Piana and Brunello, we can wear a cashmere (blend) sweater and pretend.

This summer, the Stealth-Wealth status symbol is a surprising one: the boat shoe.

Why boat shoes?

Think about it: what says privilege like owning a boat and constantly sailing or a lake or on the sea? Boat shoes hint at an old-money lifestyle. They say you’re always prepared to be onboard a sailboat, yacht or sloop, that you have a tight jaw, and frequent clubs and restaurants that don’t allow sneakers, and you went to a prep school that has a biz-caz dress code.

I can tick the last box, which is why this trend makes me physically ill. At the sight of boat shoes — Sperry topsiders in particular — I’m transported back to high school. And no one wants that.

I can almost see the hoard of preppy kids in salmon garb and monogrammed backpacks, with their Sperrys as the cherry on top of their Brooks Brothers and Vineyard Vines outfit combinations.

Now, the fashionable set have taken the shoe over. Pairing them with trendy prep-inspired brands like Rowing Blazers and Aime Leon Dore, they’re taking back Prep.

Unlike hipster yuppies who took over Williamsburg and Portland in 2013, this isn’t playfully-ironic. It’s serious. You’ll see boat shoes with summer dresses, Gen Z oversized denim and carpenter pants. What an unlikely pairing — workwear and Prep, the opposite of workwear. Talk about high-low juxtaposition.

How to style boat shoes for summer?

If you’re planning on styling boat shoes for the summer, keep this in mind. Styling boat shoes correctly means achieving a balance between embracing new-age Prep without looking like a Prep school dweeb.

Do not go full quiet luxury with them. Put down the striped sweater and definitely don’t drape it around your shoulder. You’ll look like you’re cosplaying as someone in an ivy league a cappella group.

Instead, pair unexpected styles and aesthetics with boat shoes. They’re this summer’s cowboy boot. You’ll see them with flowy white maxi skirts and threadbare vintage tees. You’ll see them with ripped denim and oversized pants. You’ll definitely see them at the US Open, but you’ll also see them in the club. Don’t believe me? If the office siren aesthetic made it to the club, so will this.

The one benefit of this trend: unlike many other microtrends, boat shoes are usually made to be worn to death. They’re practical, comfortable, and easy to slip on while still being dressy. They’re a less casual option of Birkenstock Bostons and a counterpart to the loafer trend. No wonder Gen Z-loved brands like Miu Miu made their own and Saks is selling their distressed leather boat shoes for $925 a pair! Outrageous.

As they grow more high fashion, it’s a clear sign that boat shoes are here to stay. But they’re not your grandmother’s boat shoes, not my prep-school nightmare. They’re something else entirely. It just depends how you style them.

Whether you’re in love with quiet luxury or eager to experiment with the next trend, you can wear boat shoes with any aesthetic. I just won’t be joining you. God forbid, if LL Bean boots are in for fall, I’m abandoning everything and giving it all up for a beige capsule wardrobe.

For now, I’ll watch timidly as everyone dons a shoe I disavowed in my youth — and they’ll look good while doing it.

As with most capsule wardrobes, tops are usually going to be the largest category, especially since they are seasonal (more on that later).

You’ll want to start with a crisp white button-down shirt like this one, which is arguably one of the most classic items anyone could own. It can be styled in a ton of different ways, works in multiple seasons, is a great layering piece, and won’t ever go out of fashion. Satin blouses and striped button-downs are good options, as well.

Speaking of stripes, consider adding a striped sweater or cardigan to your collection for a pop of print; this striped pullover sweater from Lulus has a prep school feel thanks to its collared design.

During chillier seasons, you’ll want to have a slim-fitting turtleneck sweater or bodysuit in a neutral color (we love this taupe sweater bodysuit from Abercrombie), which you’ll easily be able to dress up or down.

No capsule wardrobe would be complete without a basic white t-shirt, but since we are talking Quiet Luxury, opt for a slim-fitting t-shirt like this double-layered one made from a thick, luxe, contour fabric.

Bottoms

When it comes to bottoms, you’ll find that you don’t need as many tops to create an array of looks — so long as you pick the right pieces.

Some tailored trousers are a definite must-have, like this beige pleated straight-leg pair made from a luxe wool blend. They have a timeless, sophisticated look that can be worn day or night, both in professional and social settings.

Next up, a mini skirt featuring a refined plaid print will add a feminine element to the mix. This one from Mango is super affordable. Plus, it will pair perfectly with both pumps and chunky loafers, making it surprisingly versatile.

Jeans are a key piece in every wardrobe, but for an Old Money vibe, opt for a pair in a dark blue or black wash with an elevated fit (this pair features an A-line, wide-leg silhouette). Choose a darker wash to make them appear more polished, and be sure to avoid rips, holes, or exaggerated distressing.

Outerwear

In addition to keeping you warm, the right outerwear can really bring your outfits together and give them extra polish.

It doesn’t get more classic than a beige trench coat — trends come and go, but trench coats are forever! This chic one from H&M is ideal for the spring and fall seasons and makes just about any outfit look instantly chic.

For chillier weather, opt for a long wool-blend coat in a neutral hue like taupe brown, gray, or black. The length and structure of this Zara coat make it look high-end, so it works with both casual and dressy looks.

Tweed is a material that screams “Old Money,” so a collarless tweed jacket with gold buttons will give your outfits a Chanel-inspired look. The same goes for a sweater jacket like this striped one, which looks more refined than your average cardigan.

Dresses

Let’s not forget about dresses! You can’t go wrong with classic silhouettes like A-line, shift, shirt, and wrap dresses.

Like the classic button-down shirt, a shirt dress with the same button front and collar detail looks polished. I love this Abercrombie one for its timeless blue and white striped pattern.

Since the Old Money aesthetic centers around neutral colors and refined pieces, your dresses should be classic rather than overly trendy, colorful, or boldly printed.

A simple crewneck rib knit midi dress in a subdued hue like gray is a good option for your capsule wardrobe. This one from Dynamite can be dressed up with pumps and a long coat or worn casually with white low-top sneakers.

And, of course, everyone needs a trusty LBD in their closet, so opt for a black dress with an A-line silhouette that is universally flattering and won’t go out of style. This chic one from Anthropologie is under $150.

Accessories are a major key to elevating your ensembles and making them look more luxe, and luckily, you don’t have to break the bank to do so.

Another way to look luxe? Try some statement stud earrings like these vintage-inspired gold ridge earrings. (Heirloom jewelry is a keystone of the Old Money aesthetic.)

Obviously, Old Money and Quiet Luxury sound like they involve expensive items, but as I’ve demonstrated in this post, that doesn’t have to be the case — everything so far has been under $200!

However, if you’re ready to invest in some higher-quality pieces, here are my recommendations for what to splurge on.

A well-tailored blazer (or a full suit) is a solid investment, as it’s something you’ll be able to wear for years to come. This double-breasted blazer is expertly tailored with a nipped-in waist and features an upscale wool-blend material and gold crest buttons for a luxe look. Whether you wear it to the office or casually with jeans and sneakers, it’s a forever piece.

Leather shoes and accessories are another area to invest in, like a quality leather tote bag or structured handbag, which you’ll be able to use on a daily basis. This stunning leather tote from Madewell is durable and will go with everything in your closet for years to come.

Plus, leather just looks elevated, which is why some nude leather pumps in a classic shape are a key item for upgrading your looks, as well. These Sam Edelman pumps are beloved for their comfort, and their pointy-toe design is timeless.

Investing in sophisticated jewelry that you’ll be able to wear for decades is also a good idea. Options include an elegant pearl necklace or studs, a gold chain necklace, or a signet ring.

Now for the fun part: creating wearable Old Money outfits!

By sticking to one general, neutral color palette, you’ll be able to mix and match nearly everything to create a ton of different looks.

Whether you’re going for a casual yet refined look with jeans and a cardigan or a polished, office-friendly look, you’ll be able to put together an outfit for every occasion while sticking to the Old Money aesthetic.

When it’s a bit warmer outside, you can also drape a cardigan sweater over your shoulders when wearing a simple t-shirt to add a pop of print or color to your outfit — there’s something about tying a cardigan around your shoulders that gives off a preppy country club vibe, making it oh-so Old Money.

Seasonal Considerations

Products: Hat, Sunglasses, Sandals, Scarf, Boots

So what happens when a new season rolls around? Well, you can easily adapt your capsule wardrobe to any with the addition of a few seasonal items.

For example, in the summer, you’ll want to swap out your knitwear for lighter fabric tops like linen and cotton and add in some stylish flat leather square-toe sandals in a neutral brown shade. These brown sandals will give you the Hermes look on a budget.

This straw wide-brim hat with a grosgrain band will keep you shielded from the sun, while these $15 oval sunglasses have a classic look to them.

In the wintertime, trade your sandals in for these chic knee-high dress boots, and bundle up with this neutral-colored scarf to complement your outerwear.

Personalization & Care

Want to add a personal touch to your capsule wardrobe?

Try adding in some heirloom pieces or vintage finds — this is *Old* Money we are talking about, after all!

How to Dress Like Sofia Richie

Sofia Richie-Grainge is the biggest style star of the year. After her internet-breaking wedding, she single-handedly put #OldMoney, #QuietLuxury style on the map — never mind that, as our favorite nepo baby, her wealth only goes back one generation to her father, Lionel Richie.

What makes Sofia Richie’s style so compelling is that it’s timeless. Her outfits aren’t ruled by what everyone else is wearing. In a sea of identical-looking influencers, Sofia’s looks transcend trends. She creates trends.

Her looks also feel accessible. Sure, not her full Chanel couture outfits, but many of her outfits revolve around simple formulas and tailored silhouettes with good materials. Like any of us, she likes a good designer brand. But she’s grown out of her logomania phases (we all had one) and favors looks that are more understated.
