  • Chase DeLauter included on Guardians Wild Card Series roster

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Chase DeLauter, an outfielder with no major league experience, was included on the Cleveland Guardians’ roster for their Wild Card Series against the Detroit Tigers.

    What You Need To Know

    • DeLauter was recently sidelined for injuries
    • DeLauter could be the first player to debut in the postseason since 2020
    • DeLauter had been slated to play in the Arizona Fall League

Selected 16th in the 2022 amateur draft, DeLauter hit .278 with five homers and 21 RBIs in 34 games at Triple-A Columbus. He turns 24 on Oct. 8.

DeLauter was sidelined by injuries for much of this year. He was hurt during a pregame workout at spring training on Feb. 28 and had bilateral core muscle surgery on March 4 for a sports hernia.

After eight games at the rookie-level Arizona Complex League Guardians, DeLauter played his first game this year for Triple-A Columbus on May 23, but he stayed in the lineup only until July 12. He had surgery 11 days later to repair a fractured hamate bone in his right wrist.

DeLauter could be the first player to debut in the postseason since 2020, when Tampa Bay pitcher Shane McClanahan, San Diego pitcher Ryan Weathers and Minnesota outfielder Alex Kiriloff all accomplished the feat.

Manager Stephen Vogt said DeLauter has been taking batting practice at the organization’s Arizona complex. DeLauter had been slated to play in the Arizona Fall League.

“As we were talking through it and looking through the series with three games, we felt 11 pitchers was the right move,” Vogt said. “When we looked at at-bats, Chase was healthy and he’s the best bat we have available to us. We thought it would be a good idea to get him on the roster.”

DeLauter is among seven left-handed bats on the Guardians’ bench and could come in to play center or right field.

Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said DeLauter’s promotion was not a surprise.

“You can’t get into the building and not be seen by somebody. So we had some time to talk. And we have some pitchers and position players who spent some time in Toledo this year as well,” Hinch said. “Our teams, not only are we sort of intimately close at the big league level, but in Triple-A, in Double-A, in Single-A. We play these guys coming up throughout. And so you’ll hear our hitters talk about facing these guys in Akron or facing these guys in Erie, along with Toledo and Columbus.”

The Tigers left off right-handers Chris Paddack and Tanner Rainey but included right-hander Paul Sewald for the best-of-three series that started Tuesday.

Yankees rookie catcher J.C. Escarra and pitchers Paul Blackburn and Will Warren made roster against the Boston Red Sox while pitchers Luis Gil and Ryan Yarbrough were left off along with outfielder Austin Slater.

New York is carrying 12 pitchers and 14 position players. Escarra is the third catcher after Austin Wells and Ben Rice, giving manager Aaron Boone pinch-hitting and pinch-running options.

Warren is viewed as a better relief option than Gil, who averaged 5.2 walks per nine innings.

Boston included a pair of speedy potential pinch runners, infielders Nate Eaton and David Hamilton, and rookies left-handers Connelly Early and Payton Rolle. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that right-hander Lucas Giolito will miss the series because of an ailing elbow.

Catcher Elias Díaz, who has a sore left oblique, was left off San Diego’s roster for its series at the Chicago Cubs, and the Padres included three catchers: Luis Campusano, Freddy Fermin and Martín Maldonado.

Rookie infielder Mason McCoy was on the roster and left-hander Yuki Matsui was left off.

Chicago included rookie outfielder Kevin Alcántara and catcher Moisés Ballesteros but left off right-hander Javier Assad and catcher Miguel Amaya.

  • Guardians clinch postseason spot with walk-off hit by pitch

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said in the midst of Cleveland’s 10-game losing streak in early July that there was light at the end of the tunnel and things would turn around.

Vogt ended up selling his team a little short, as the Guardians made one of the biggest turnarounds in baseball history.

Cleveland clinched a postseason spot in fittingly improbable fashion. C.J. Kayfus was hit in the arm by a fastball from Texas Rangers reliever Robert Garcia with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning Saturday night, scoring Petey Halpin with the winning run to give the Guardians a 3-2 victory that put them in the playoffs.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the first time since at least 1920 that a team won on a walk-off hit by pitch to clinch a postseason spot.

“When they walked (Gabriel) Arias (to load the bases), I knew I had a job to do. I knew I was going to get that job done one way or another, but I definitely didn’t think it was going to be like that,” said Kayfus, called up from the minors in early August.

The Guardians (86-74) became the fourth major league team and first in the American League to reach the postseason after having a 10-game losing streak, joining the 2017 Los Angeles Dodgers, 1982 Atlanta Braves and 1951 New York Giants.

“It’s exactly us. Of course we’re going to get in on a walk-off hit by pitch” a champagne-soaked Vogt said in the clubhouse as his team was celebrating. “Just to stop and think about where we came from to get here, there’s no words. I couldn’t be more proud of these guys. They’ve earned every bit of this.”

According to FanGraphs, the Guardians had a 2.9% chance to make the postseason and a 0.2% chance to win the AL Central on Sept. 1.

Cleveland remains tied with Detroit for the division lead after the Tigers also wrapped up a postseason spot Saturday with a 2-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

If Cleveland and Detroit end up tied after Sunday’s games, the Guardians would win the AL Central due to an 8-5 advantage in the season series. They would host a Wild Card Series starting Tuesday.

Even though Steven Kwan and José Ramírez have been the Guardians’ offensive stalwarts all year, others have picked up the slack in September.

Johnathan Rodríguez, called up Wednesday after David Fry was hit in the face by a pitch Tuesday night, batted cleanup and hit a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Guardians up 2-1. It was the first at-bat for Rodríguez, who had a .167 batting average in 29 big league games, since he was called up for his third stint this season.

“They showed me the lineup last night and I showed it to my wife. She said just to play like you did at Triple-A,” Rodríguez said.

On Wednesday, the Guardians became the first major league team to overcome a deficit of 15 1/2 games and take the lead in either division or league play with a 5-1 win over the Tigers. Cleveland was 40-48 and also 6 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot on July 6 after a 7-2 loss in 10 innings to the Tigers extended the losing streak to 10.

Since July 7, the Guardians are an AL-best 47-26.

The 1914 Boston Braves were 15 games back in the National League on July 4 and rallied to win by 10 1/2 games, according to Elias. Since baseball went to division play in 1969, the biggest deficit overcome was 14 games by the 1978 New York Yankees to win the AL East.

On Sept. 4, the Guardians were 69-70 and 11 games behind the Tigers before going 15-1, including a 10-game winning streak that included a three-game sweep in Detroit. It is the largest September lead overcome to tie or take the lead in the division or league, according to Elias. The previous mark was 8 1/2 games by the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals and 1964 Cincinnati Reds.

Cleveland found its way back to the postseason despite reliever Emmanuel Clase and starting pitcher Luis Ortiz being placed on non-disciplinary leave in July as part of investigations into their possible involvement in gambling during games. Ortiz was placed on leave July 3 and Clase on July 28.

“I give our players and coaches and staff and (Vogt) a ton of credit because it was a really hard mountain to climb to make this a reality,” Cleveland president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said. “There were obviously times during the season where this looked really far away, and our group was never daunted by that. They showed up each day with the same energy, the same focus, the same intensity, to try to figure out a way to win a game that night, and that mindset’s really carried us forward to today.”

  • Guardians remain tied in the AL Central after 7-3 loss to Rangers

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Alejandro Osuna hit a three-run homer in the first, rookie Jack Leiter matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and the Texas Rangers beat Cleveland 7-3 on Friday night.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Texas Rangers beat Cleveland 7-3 on Friday night

    • The Guardians remained tied with Detroit for the AL Central lead

    • On Saturday, Texas will go with LHP Jacob Latz, while Cleveland will counter with LHP Joey Cantillo

The Guardians (86-74) remained tied with Detroit for the AL Central lead after the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Tigers.

The Guardians have a magic number of one to clinch a postseason spot — win and/or Astros loss — after the Los Angeles Angels rallied for a 4-3 victory over Houston. The Astros are one game back for the final wild-card spot.

Cleveland also has a magic number of two — wins and/or Detroit losses — to wrap up the division.

If Cleveland and Detroit end up tied after Sunday’s games, the Guardians would win the AL Central due to an 8-5 advantage in the season series and host a Wild Card Series starting Tuesday.

Kyle Manzardo had a two-run homer to center in the first inning for the Guardians, who have dropped consecutive games for the first time since Sept. 2.

Leiter (10-10) continued his mastery of Cleveland after throwing seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts on Aug. 23. The 25-year-old right-hander went seven innings for the third time in 34 career starts and allowed two runs on four hits while throwing 101 pitches.

Texas, which won for only the second time in its last 10 games, got its first two batters aboard before Rowdy Tellez hit a one-out, RBI double off the wall in left-center. With two outs, Osuna lined a hanging curveball off Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi (7-7) into the stands in right-center to make it 4-0.

The Guardians cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first on Manzardo’s two-run drive to center field.

    Key moment

The Rangers got some breathing room in the seventh on a two-run single by Cody Freeman with the bases loaded. Jake Burger added an RBI base hit to make it 7-2.

    Key stat

Osuna has a hit in eight of Texas’ last nine games. He is batting .211 this season, but has a team-leading .304 average in September, going 17 of 56.

    Up next

On Saturday, Texas will go with LHP Jacob Latz (2-0, 2.80 ERA) while Cleveland will counter with LHP Joey Cantillo (5-3, 3.21 ERA).

  • Guardians beat Twins 8-0 for 10th straight win

    [ad_1]

MINNEAPOLIS — Steven Kwan tied a season high with four RBIs, Logan Allen pitched a career-best eight innings and the Cleveland Guardians made it 10 straight wins by beating the Minnesota Twins 8-0 on Saturday to sweep a day-night doubleheader without giving up a run.

    What You Need To Know

    • Winners in 15 of their past 16 games, the Guardians are one game back of first-place Detroit in the AL Central after trailing by 11 on Sept. 4
    • The Guardians also are tied with Houston for the last American League wild card, a game behind Boston
    • Guardians starters have allowed no more than two earned runs in 15 straight games since Sept. 5, the longest streak in franchise history

Winners in 15 of their past 16 games, the Guardians are one game back of first-place Detroit in the AL Central after trailing by 11 on Sept. 4. The Tigers were beaten 6-5 by Atlanta on Saturday afternoon.

The Guardians also are tied with Houston for the last American League wild card, a game behind Boston. They won the opener 6-0, hitting five home runs in a game for the first time since April 10, 2021.

It was the 11th time Cleveland pitched shutouts in both ends of a doubleheader and first since Sept. 30, 1964, against Boston. The only other time the Twins went scoreless for 18 innings in a twinbill came against Cleveland on May 21, 1961.

Minnesota was blanked twice in Oakland on April 20, 2021, but those were seven-inning games due to rules in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Limited to one hit through four innings, Cleveland sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth.

A one-out single by Kwan scored Brayan Rocchio and Petey Halpin. With two outs, Kyle Manzardo and C.J. Kayfus had RBI singles around a two-run double by Gabriel Arias to the wall in right-center field.

Kwan added a two-run single in the eighth.

That was more than enough for Allen (8-11), who earned his first win since July 29 by scattering four hits and striking out seven.

Guardians starters have allowed no more than two earned runs in 15 straight games since Sept. 5, the longest streak in franchise history.

Bailey Ober (5-9) permitted six runs and eight hits in five innings for the Twins. After going 4-1 in his first seven starts, he is 1-8 in 19 starts since May 8. He missed 26 games from June 29 to Aug. 2 with a left hip impingement.

    Key moment

Halpin’s single was his first career hit. The 23-year-old outfielder was called up from the minors earlier in the day when outfielder Nolan Jones was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique.

    Key stat

The Twins had seven hits in the doubleheader, falling to 2-7 in their past nine games and 4-15 in September.

    Up next

Sunday’s series finale has Cleveland LHP Joey Cantillo (5-3, 3.27 ERA) scheduled to face Minnesota RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (7-4, 4.31).

    [ad_1]

MINNEAPOLIS — Bo Naylor snapped an eighth-inning tie with his second two-run single of the game, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Minnesota Twins 6-2 on Friday night for their eighth straight victory.

    What You Need To Know

    • Guardians RHP Slade Cecconi will start the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader opposite Twins RHP Joe Ryan

The Guardians (82-71) won for the 13th time in 14 games to pull within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Tigers in the AL Central. Cleveland was coming off a three-game sweep of Detroit, which lost 10-1 to the visiting Braves on Friday with three games looming in Cleveland next week.

José Ramírez had a two-out double off Cole Sands (4-6) in the eighth and Kyle Manzardo was intentionally walked. Ramírez stole his 40th base and Manzardo followed with his second to set the table for Naylor, who lined a full-count pitch to right field for a 4-2 lead.

Steven Kwan and Angel Martínez had two-out RBI doubles in the ninth off Michael Tonkin to cap the scoring.

Kwan led off the game with a single off Pablo López and Ramírez walked with one out. Both advanced a base when Manzardo flied out to left and Naylor followed with a two-out single to right for a 2-0 lead.

The Twins tied it in the sixth on a wild pitch by Parker Messick and Royce Lewis’ RBI single off Matt Festa.

Messick struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Jakob Junis (4-1) struck out four in two hitless innings for the win.

Lopez left after four innings with right forearm tightness. He allowed two runs on three hits in his third start since missing three months with a right shoulder strain.

Minnesota (66-87) has dropped seven of 10 to the Guardians this season.

    Key moment

  • Guardians shut out Tigers

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Gavin Williams struck out nine in five innings, Bo Naylor hit a two-run single and the Cleveland Guardians won their season-best sixth straight game, 4-0 over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.

    What You Need To Know

    • Cleveland, which has won 11 of its last 12, is now 4 1/2 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central race
    • It was the 10th shutout loss of the season for the Tigers

Cleveland, which has won 11 of its last 12, is now 4 1/2 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central race. The teams play three more games next week.

It was the 10th shutout loss of the season for the Tigers, who have lost 13 of their last 20 games and need a combination of seven wins and Cleveland losses to win the division.

Williams (11-5), who reached 30 starts in a season for the first time in his career, allowed three hits and two walks. Five relievers finished the shutout.

Detroit starter Jack Flaherty (8-14) gave up one run on three hits and four walks in five innings.

The Guardians took a 1-0 lead in the third on George Valera’s RBI single. Gabriel Arias doubled in the sixth, stole third and scored on Angel Martínez’s RBI single to make it 2-0. Naylor made it 4-0 in the ninth.

The Tigers only got two runners into scoring position in the first six innings. They drew two walks in the seventh, bringing pinch-hitter Andy Ibáñez to the plate with one out. He popped out to short and Gleyber Torres grounded out to end the inning.

    Key moment

Cleveland put their first two hitters on base in the fifth, but chose to have Steven Kwan bunt them over to second and third. The move backfired when Flaherty struck out Valera and, after an intentional walk, struck out Kyle Manzardo to end the inning.

  • Tanner Bibee gives the Guardians their first complete game shutout in 6 years

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Tanner Bibee gave the Cleveland Guardians something Friday they hadn’t experienced in six years: a complete-game shutout.

    What You Need To Know

    • Tanner Bibee gave the Cleveland Guardians a complete game shutout Friday
    • It’s something they haven’t had in six years
    • He struck out 10 and walked none while tossing a two-hitter in the Guardians’ 4-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox

Bibee struck out 10 and walked none while tossing a two-hitter in the Guardians’ 4-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. It helped Cleveland keep pace in the AL wild-card race.

Bibee (10-11) was more impressed with not allowing a free pass than fanning double digits.

“No walks for sure,” said Bibee, who went the distance for the second time this season. “I hate walking people, and it’s a beautiful thing when they both happen at the same time.”

Bibee might be peaking at the ideal time for a Cleveland club chasing Seattle for the final AL wild card. He entered the season as Cleveland’s ace but endured stretches of inconsistency, leading to a 4.69 ERA entering his 29th start.

He was plenty effective Friday, baffling a White Sox lineup that entered the day having won nine of its previous 11 games. His changeup worked early, setting the stage for all his other pitches late.

“Finally,” he quipped. “Just the work that I’m putting each week between starts. Obviously, it’s been an up-and-down year, but obviously it worked out today.”

He ended up with Cleveland’s first complete-game shutout since Sept. 10, 2019, when Zach Plesac accomplished the feat against the Los Angeles Angels.

Bibee, who loves Chipotle and eats there before every start, allowed back-to-back singles in the third inning before escaping with an inning-ending double play. He retired 18 of the last 20 batters he faced, none bigger than Nolan Jones’ diving catch on Lenyn Sosa’s liner to right field for the final out.

Cleveland (76-71) has won seven of eight, including Bibee’s last two starts.

  • Guardians end Rays’ winning streak at 7 with 7-1 victory

    [ad_1]

TAMPA, Fla. — José Ramírez had three hits and two RBIs, and the Cleveland Guardians had a five-run second inning in a 7-1 victory over Tampa Bay on Friday night, snapping the Rays’ season-best winning streak at seven.

    What You Need To Know

    • They won for the fourth time in 14 games, keeping their wild-card hopes alive

The Guardians won for the fourth time in 14 games to reach .500 at 70-70 and keep their wild-card hopes alive. The Rays dropped to 71-69.

Cleveland broke through after the Rays, credited with beginning the opener trend in baseball, used an opener for the first time this season.

Griffin Jax worked a clean first, but Ian Seymour (3-1) quickly ran into trouble. He bobbled Gabriel Arias’ bunt for an error, then hit a batter and walked another to load the bases. Kwan singled in two runs, Ramírez followed with a two-run double, and David Fry added an RBI single to make it 5-0. Ramirez was 3 for 5 with the two RBIs.

Austin Hedges homered for Cleveland in the fifth.

Gavin Williams (10-6) gave Cleveland seven solid innings, allowing one run on seven hits. He walked three and struck out three.

Williams’ allowed Junior Caminero’s 41st homer in the sixth, the rookie’s AL-leading 14th since Aug. 1.

  • Rays beat the Guardians 4-2 and extend their winning streak to 7 games

    [ad_1]

TAMPA, Fla. — Ryan Pepiot struck out six in five hitless innings and Christopher Morel had three hits and an RBI as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 on Thursday night.

Carson Williams also drove in two runs for Tampa Bay, which won its season-high seventh straight game and for the 10th time in 12 games.

With the victory, the Rays move within two games of idle Seattle in the race for the final AL wild-card spot — the closest they have been to a playoff spot since July 26, when they were 1 1/2 games back.

Pepiot (11-10) walked two in the victory and a combined no-hit bid was spoiled after 5 2/3 innings when José Ramírez singled off Bryan Baker.

Pete Fairbanks allowed consecutive homers by Ramírez and Kyle Manzardo in the top of the ninth before getting the next three outs to close out the victory.

Junior Caminero, Brandon Lowe and Jake Mangum also had hits for Tampa Bay.

Logan Allen (7-11) allowed six hits and four runs with four strikeouts in the loss for the Guardians, who have lost four of their last five games and slipped 3 1/2 games back in the wild-card race.

  • Triston McKenzie designated for assignment by Cleveland Guardians

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Guardians pitcher Triston McKenzie, who has been plagued by arm injuries since making 30 starts in his breakout 2022 season, was designated for assignment Monday.

    What You Need To Know

    • McKenzie, 27, was long viewed as a potential ace by the Guardians
    • Cleveland has seven days to either trade or place him on waivers
    • Vogt also reaffirmed his support for three-time All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase on Monday

McKenzie was moved to the bullpen in spring training, but he posted an 11.12 ERA over his first four appearances this year. The right-hander hasn’t appeared in a game since he allowed four runs in one inning on April 16 at Baltimore.

A first-round pick by Cleveland in 2015, McKenzie went 3-8 with a 5.11 ERA over the past two seasons. He spent three months on the injured list in 2023 with a right shoulder strain, then missed three months last year with a right elbow sprain.

“It was really difficult to find innings for Triston, and that’s what led to the decision,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “It was tough because of his history here.”

McKenzie, 27, was long viewed as a potential ace by the Guardians. He went 11-11 with a 2.96 ERA and 190 strikeouts in 2022, making two starts in the postseason while becoming a fan favorite.

Cleveland has seven days to either trade or place the 6-foot-5, 185-pounder on waivers. Right-hander Zak Kent was brought up from Triple-A Columbus to fill McKenzie’s roster spot before the team opened a three-game series against the New York Yankees.

“We wish Triston well, regardless of if he gets claimed or stays with us,” Vogt said.

Vogt also reaffirmed his support for three-time All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase on Monday, saying, “I haven’t even had the thought” of replacing him. The right-hander has allowed nine runs and 20 hits in 10 1/3 innings for a 7.84 ERA, including three in one inning Sunday in Pittsburgh when he blew his second save in six chances.

Clase, 27, won the Mariano Rivera AL Reliever of the Year Award as baseball’s best reliever in 2022 and 2024, leading the league in saves in each of the last three years. He went 4-2 with 47 saves and a 0.61 ERA last season.

“He’s getting hit, he’s leaving the ball down the middle, and there are things he needs to work on,” Vogt said. “But Emmanuel Clase is going to get the ball in the ninth inning when he’s available.”

  • Guardians beat Yankees 6-4

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — José Ramírez hit a three-run homer and Kyle Manzardo went deep on the next pitch in the third inning, helping the Cleveland Guardians beat the American League-leading New York Yankees 6-4 on Monday night.

    What You Need To Know

    • Cleveland led 6-0 before Jasson Domínguez hit a two-run homer in the seventh
    • Ramírez moved past Hall of Famer Tris Speaker for sole possession of second on the team career list behind Hall of Famer Earl Averill
    • The teams meet Tuesday for the second game in the series

Ramírez and Manzardo both cleared the fence in right off Clarke Schmidt (0-1), who gave up five runs in four innings. Manzardo has homered in three straight games and has a team-high seven.

Cleveland led 6-0 before Jasson Domínguez hit a two-run homer in the seventh and Jazz Chisholm Jr., who had been in a 1-for-18 slide, had a two-run drive in the eighth. The Yankees went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.

New York, playing Cleveland for the first time since winning last year’s AL Championship Series, lost for the second time in eight games.

Aaron Judge extended his on-base streak to 19 games, going 1 of 4 with a walk, but struck out against Cade Smith with a runner on second for the final out. The reigning AL MVP leads the majors with a .384 average, 33 hits and 25 RBIs.

Gavin Williams (2-1) allowed two runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings in his first win over an AL East squad in eight career starts and Smith worked the ninth for his second big league save, his first this season.

    Key moment

Schmidt, who made his season debut last Wednesday, held the Guardians hitless in the first two innings before allowing two homers, two doubles and three singles over the next two frames.

  • Guardians place Lane Thomas on 10-day injured list with bruised wrist

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a bruised right wrist sustained when he got hit by a pitch two weeks ago.

Cleveland made the move retroactive to April 20 before facing the New York Yankees in the second game of a three-game series.

To replace Thomas, the club selected the contract of infielder Will Wilson from Triple-A Columbus.

Thomas, who was a postseason star for Cleveland in 2024, was struck April 8 in the home opener against the Chicago White Sox. The 29-year-old has played in five games since, most recently Sunday at Pittsburgh.

The Guardians acquired Thomas in a July trade with the Washington Nationals. He struggled for much of the regular season before having his biggest moments with Cleveland in October.

Thomas hit two homers in the AL Division Series against Detroit, connecting for a grand slam in Game 5 off AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to help the Guardians advance.

Wilson was batting .324 for the Columbus Clippers with six homers and 18 RBIs in 18 games. He homered in three of his past four games.

This is the 26-year-old’s first promotion to the majors. He’s a former first-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels, who traded him to San Francisco in 2019. Cleveland acquired Wilson in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft this past offseason.

The Guardians also transferred right-hander Trevor Stephan to the 60-day injured list. He’s recovering from Tommy John surgery.

  • Juan Soto’s 3-run homer sends Yankees past Guardians 5-2 and into World Series

Juan Soto’s 3-run homer sends Yankees past Guardians 5-2 and into World Series

    [ad_1]

Juan Soto hit a three-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning and the New York Yankees advanced to their 41st World Series — and first in 15 years — by beating the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series on Saturday night.

Baseball’s biggest brand is going back to October’s main stage.

Soto, who was acquired in a seven-player trade with San Diego in December, moved the Bronx Bombers into position with one big swing.

The Yankees will try to win their 28th title against either the New York Mets or Los Angeles Dodgers. Game 6 of the NL Championship Series is on Sunday at Dodger Stadium.

In the 10th, Austin Wells walked with one out and Alex Verdugo followed with a grounder to second baseman Andrés Giménez, whose soft toss to the bag was dropped by rookie shortstop Brayan Rocchio for an error.

Gaddis struck out Gleyber Torres and had Soto in a 1-2 count before New York’s stylish outfielder sent a shot over the wall in center. Soto danced down the first-base line and paused to celebrate with his teammates before circling the bases.

“I was just saying to myself, `You’re all over that guy. You’re all over that guy. He ain’t got anything,’” Soto said.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, who took care of the Guardians in five games, but it wasn’t easy.

New York won the first two at Yankee Stadium without much fanfare or any major drama. However, it was a different story in Cleveland as all three games at Progressive Field were nail-biters.

The Guardians rallied to win Game 3 on two, two-run homers in their last two at-bats, and the Yankees held on to win Game 4 after blowing a four-run lead.

Cleveland just didn’t have enough and a surprising season under first-year manager Stephen Vogt ended just short of a World Series. The franchise remains without a title since 1948, baseball’s current longest drought.

The Yankees are back in the World Series, back where their fans expect them to be every year.

The club’s 82-80, fourth-place finish in the AL East last season led to some “soul searching as an organization” during the winter, according to manager Aaron Boone, who has been widely criticized but is one of just three managers to take New York to playoffs in six of his first seven seasons.

While the team’s core stayed mostly intact, getting Soto in a blockbuster trade on Dec. 7 — New York sent five players to San Diego for the three-time All-Star outfielder — accelerated the team returning to title contender.

“That was a good day,” Boone said with a laugh before the game.

Stanton’s 446-foot rocket into the left-field bleachers tied it at 2 in the sixth and chased Tanner Bibee, who had struck out New York’s dangerous DH in his first two at-bats and held the Yankees scoreless for the first five innings.

It was Stanton’s fourth homer in this series — his third in three days — and his 16th in the postseason, moving him into fourth place on the club’s career list behind Bernie Williams (22), Derek Jeter (20) and Mickey Mantle (18).

Before the game, Boone was asked what makes Stanton so good.

“He can hit it harder than anyone, first of all,” Boone said. “So there’s the physical nature of what he does that’s different than just about everyone in the world.”

But Boone went on to compliment Stanton’s discipline at the plate, “his approach, his process, how he studies guys.”

“There’s something that he does when he gets familiarity with people on top of being very physically gifted,” Boone said.

The Guardians took a 2-0 lead in the fifth off Carlos Rodón on Steven Kwan’s RBI single with two outs. But Cleveland missed a big chance for more, leaving the bases loaded when Lane Thomas grounded out on the first pitch to him from Mark Leiter Jr.

  • Cleveland Guardians ready for Yankee Stadium

Cleveland Guardians ready for Yankee Stadium

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — Andrés Giménez is ready for the rowdy gauntlet of Yankee Stadium.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Guardians will send Alex Cobb to the mound against the Yankees’ Carlos Rodon in Monday’s ALCS Game 1
    • Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil will follow Rodón in the Yankees rotation, and Tanner Bibee will start Game 2 for the Guardians
    • Two years ago, Cleveland’s Josh Naylor angered Yankees fans with his rock-the-baby celebration of a home run off Cole in Game 4 of the ALDS, which the Yankees won in five games
    • Cobb has thrown just 19 1/3 big league innings this year. The 37-year-old right-hander, a 2023 All-Star, had hip surgery Oct. 31 and hadn’t yet returned to the mound when he was acquired from San Francisco at the July 30 trade deadline

“It’s a mindset,” the Cleveland second baseman said through a translator ahead of Monday night’s AL Championship Series opener. “It’s just this sense of belief we can do it because we know we can play baseball the right way.”

In the ALCS for the first time since 2016, Cleveland sends Alex Cobb to the mound against the Yankees’ Carlos Rodón in the start of the best-of-seven matchup for a World Series berth against the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Mets.

Cleveland seeks its seventh AL pennant and first since 2016, trying to win its third World Series championship after 1920 and 1948. The Yankees are trying for their 41st pennant and 28th title.

“What makes the Yankees the Yankees is winning and winning a World Series,” said New York shortstop Anthony Volpe, who grew up a Yankees fan in Manhattan and New Jersey. “I had a way better view now than I did when I was a fan. There was sometimes where we were like basically sitting with our backs against the upper deck top row and it felt like the stadium was going to come down shaking.”

AL Central champion Cleveland beat Detroit in a five-game Division Series and the AL East-winning Yankees defeated Kansas City 3-1. While the Mets, Yankees and Dodgers are 1-2-3 in payroll at $266 million and up, the Guardians are 23rd at $109 million.

“We’re confident in who we are,” Guardians first-year manager Stephen Vogt said. “All we can control is us.”

Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil will follow Rodón in the Yankees rotation, and Tanner Bibee will start Game 2 for the Guardians.

A chill in the air led some players to wear ski caps for Sunday’s workout.

“I’m sure Yankee Stadium is going to be rocking tomorrow night,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “It looks like cooler weather is moving in for these first two games, so it’s going to have that October feel to it.”

    Ugly past

Fans in the right-field bleachers pelted Cleveland outfielders with bottles, cans and debris moments after New York rallied for a 5-4 win in April 2022, a weekend in which Cleveland’s Myles Straw called Yankees supporters the “worst fan base on the planet.”

Two years ago, Cleveland’s Josh Naylor angered Yankees fans with his rock-the-baby celebration of a home run off Cole in Game 4 of a Division Series won by the Yankees in five games.

“The reception a couple months ago was pretty good, so I’m sure it will be the same,” Vogt said.

    Third baseman appreciation day

Cleveland’s José Ramírez should get more nationwide attention in Boone’s view.

“He’s the complete package,” the Yankees manager said. “If I hear another how underappreciated, underrated he is from somebody on a network or something, I want to rip my arms off and throw it at the TV. He’s not underappreciated. He is not underrated. He’s a great on-track Hall of Fame player.”

Ramírez had a quiet ALDS, going 3 for 16 with three RBIs.

“He’s one of the elite players in this league,” Vogt said. “He’s a top-five player in this league every year. In the baseball circles, everyone knows about it and talks about it.”

    Rested

Cobb has thrown just 19 1/3 big league innings this year. The 37-year-old right-hander, a 2023 All-Star, had hip surgery Oct. 31 and hadn’t yet returned to the mound when he was acquired from San Francisco at the July 30 trade deadline.

He made his season debut Aug. 9 and was sidelined after two games by a torn nail on his right index finger. He didn’t allow an earned run over six innings in his Sept. 1 return against Pittsburgh, then went back on the injured list with a blister on his right middle finger that ended his regular season.

“I felt on pace to have a pretty normal season after the hip surgery and just had setback after setback,” he said. ” I don’t think anything’s gone quite like I expected it to this year, but to look up and to be in the ALCS and have an opportunity to set the tone early is something I’m going to cherish for a long time.

He was 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA in three games and 16 1/3 innings with the Guardians, then allowed two runs over three innings in Game 3 against Detroit.

“I’ve done everything I can to make sure that I’ve mentally stayed sharp, gone over my delivery as much as I could with the long layoffs in between,” he said. “Even though it was only three innings in the DS series, it helped a lot to get back into that game action and feel the adrenaline of the postseason.”

    Stats

Juan Soto is 7 for 11 with four homers against Cobb.

Cleveland’s bullpen threw 25 2/3 of 44 innings in the Division Series and had a 3.16 ERA, up from a big league-best 2.57 during the regular season.

“We’ve relied on our bullpen all year long, but now in a seven game — traditional seven games in nine days — you have to do it a little bit differently,” Vogt said. “With the days off we had in the DS, it allowed us to really push the bullpen more than typically.”

Yankees relievers didn’t allow an earned run in 15 2/3 innings against the Royals.

Tigers hope Carpenter can come off bench in ALDS Game 5

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Detroit Tigers are hoping slugger Kerry Carpenter can come off the bench in Saturday’s decisive Game 5 of the AL Division Series against Cleveland despite dealing with a hamstring injury.

    What You Need To Know

    • Kerry Carpenter was injured while running the bases in the game on Thursday night
    • The Tigers are hoping he can come off the bench in Game 5 Saturday
    • He hasn’t had much recovery time, especially given the game moving up due to potential weather
    • Manager A.J. Hinch said Carpenter took batting practice Friday and was feeling better

Carpenter got injured while running the bases in Game 4 on Thursday night.

The quick turnaround — and MLB’s decision to move the starting time up seven hours, citing a chance of inclement weather — didn’t give him much recovery time.

But manager A.J. Hinch said Carpenter took batting practice Friday and was feeling better. Hinch said Carpenter will go through a full pregame workout before the team makes a decision on whether he can play.

“He’s sore and he’s dealing with some discomfort and not feeling 100%, but he’s also feeling some adrenaline for Game 5 in the ALDS,” Hinch said. “So that’s a good counter to not feeling at your best, and hopefully that adrenaline and that excitement will override the issues that he’s dealing with.

“He was happy with how he hit. I was happy with how he hit. Our hitting guys felt like he was taking full swings. And this morning when he woke up, he was on the early bus and was in great spirits. So when I saw the big smile, I got more and more optimistic that we were going to get good news.”

Carpenter came in as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of Game 2, and in his second at-bat hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Cleveland All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase as the Tigers won 3-0 to even the series.

The Tigers need Carpenter’s power. He had 18 homers this season despite playing in just 87 games because of a lower back stress fracture that sidelined him from May 26 to Aug. 13.

With the Guardians starting left-hander Matthew Boyd for Game 5, Carpenter, who bats from the left, probably wouldn’t have started anyway. He was on the bench for most of Game 2 before coming in as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Cincinnati Reds hiring Terry Francona as manager

    [ad_1]

Terry Francona needed some time away from baseball. A year was long enough.

    What You Need To Know

    • One of baseball’s most beloved managers, Francona has been hired by the Cincinnati Reds, returning to a team he played for after stepping down in Cleveland following last season because of health reasons
    • Francona, who won two World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox, is replacing David Bell, fired by the Reds last month in the final days of his sixth season
    • Francona has a 1,950-1,672 record in 23 years as a big-league manager with Philadelphia (1997-2000), the Red Sox (2004-2011) and Guardians (2013-2023)

One of baseball’s most beloved managers, Francona has been hired by the Cincinnati Reds, returning to a team he played for after stepping down in Cleveland following last season because of health reasons.

A person familiar with the situation confirmed the move to The Associated Press on Thursday night on condition of anonymity because the Reds had not announced the decision. An announcement could come later this week.

Francona, who won two World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox, is replacing David Bell, fired by the Reds last month in the final days of his sixth season. Bell went 409-456 during his tenure.

Francona, who turns 66 in April, played as an outfielder for Cincinnati in 1987. He hit .227 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 102 games.

It’s easy to see the appeal of the situation for both Francona and Cincinnati. The Reds went 77-85 this year, but they have one of the game’s most dynamic players in Elly De La Cruz and a potentially deep rotation — fronted by Hunter Greene.

Francona helped All-Star third baseman José Ramírez become one of baseball’s best all-around players in Cleveland, and he should have no problem commanding the attention of Cincinnati’s young roster.

After leaving the Guardians, Francona, a three-time AL Manager of the Year, spent time at his new home in Arizona and mostly kept a low profile other than attending basketball games at his alma mater in Tucson. He returned to Cleveland briefly during the summer to help launch a new restaurant in which he has an ownership stake.

Francona has a 1,950-1,672 record in 23 years as a big-league manager with Philadelphia (1997-2000), the Red Sox (2004-2011) and Guardians (2013-2023).

He was slowed by serious medical issues in his final years in Cleveland, but stayed clear of calling his departure a retirement.

“I never was real concerned about the word retire,” he said last year. “I guess when you say retire, it’s like, well, you’re going home and not doing anything. Don’t feel that way either. We’ll figure something out that makes sense.”

He found that something on the other side of Ohio.

With 1,950 wins, he’s 13th on the career list, sandwiched by Casey Stengel (1,905) and Leo Durocher (2,008), two other colorful managers who like Francona endeared themselves to fans and players.

Francona’s rise as one of the game’s best managers was somewhat unexpected.

Things didn’t go particularly well for him in Philadelphia, where he had four straight losing seasons, got constantly booed in a demanding, sports-crazed city and had the tires on his car slashed on fan appreciation day.

He was an unlikely choice for Boston’s job, but immediately claimed legendary status by winning the World Series in his first season.

The Red Sox overcame a 3-0 deficit in the AL Championship Series and swept St. Louis to end an 86-year championship drought and exorcise the “Curse of the Bambino,” a perceived hex on the team after Babe Ruth was sold to the rival New York Yankees.

When his tenure in Boston ended in 2011 amid some controversy, Francona took a year off and worked in broadcasting before going to Cleveland, where his dad, Tito, spent six seasons and he himself played 62 games in 1988.

Francona took Cleveland to the playoffs seven times in his 11 seasons and won 921 games. The Guardians, then known as the Indians, made it to the World Series in 2016 only to lose to the Chicago Cubs in a seven-game series.

Known as Tito, Francona became popular in Cleveland with his quick wit and affable personality. He rode a scooter from his downtown apartment to the ballpark each day, often waving to fans along his sort route.

Francona could have taken jobs elsewhere but felt a deep connection with Cleveland’s organization after his dad played for the Indians in the late 1950s and early 60s. He was forced to take two lengthy leaves of absence with Cleveland in 2020 while dealing with heart and gastrointestinal issues.

For his final game with the Guardians on Sept. 27 last season, the club handed out “Thank you Tito” T-shirts to fans at Progressive Field and the Guardians sent him out in style with a 4-3 win —- over the Reds.

Afterward, Francona said he needed a break.

“I just think the timing is good,” he said. “I’m just kind of beat up physically, and it’s hard to do this job right or the way I want to do it. I don’t want to shortchange anybody. I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”

His hiring by the Reds also coincides with the Guardians finishing with the AL’s second-best record under first-year manager Stephen Vogt, who had the difficult task of trying to replace a Cleveland icon.

The Guardians open the AL Division Series against Detroit on Saturday.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Brayan Rocchio singled in Andrés Giménez with the winning run as the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians scored three times in the 10th inning to beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Wednesday night, reducing their magic number for clinching a playoff berth to one.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Guardians, who now have a major league-leading 41 comeback victories this season, can lock up a postseason spot Thursday with a win over Minnesota
    • Josh Naylor hit a pair of solo homers and scored three times for Cleveland, which leads the division by six games over Kansas City with nine games remaining
    • With the loss, Minnesota’s lead over Detroit for the final AL wild-card position was sliced to one half a game

Kyle Manzardo and Will Brennan had RBI singles off Ronny Henriquez (1-1) before Michael Tonkin entered and gave up Rocchio’s second career walk-off hit, a chopper to right through a drawn-in infield.

“It’s awesome being with all these guys on the team,” Rocchio said. “That’s a special moment for me. I talked to (manager Stephen) Vogt before the game and he told me, ‘Hey, today you have a chance to win the game,’ and you saw what happened.”

The Guardians, who now have a major league-leading 41 comeback victories this season, can lock up a postseason spot Thursday with a win over Minnesota.

Josh Naylor hit a pair of solo homers and scored three times for Cleveland, which leads the division by six games over Kansas City with nine games remaining. Naylor’s first shot was a 445-foot rocket to right-center, giving him his initial 30-homer season.

“The biggest game of the year and look what we do,” Brennan said. “The youngest guys on the team get it done. These guys are so prepared, it’s unbelievable.”

The Twins took a 4-2 lead in the top of the 10th on Carlos Correa’s two-run single off Hunter Gaddis (5-3). Correa finished with four RBIs and extended his hitting streak to 16 games, matching his career high with Houston in 2019.

“I was excited about that at-bat and it was a good moment, but it wasn’t good enough,” said Correa, who is batting .377 with five homers and 15 RBIs in his last 17 games. “You just have to keep fighting. It’s a tough sport.”

Twins right-hander Bailey Ober struck out a career-high 12 over seven innings, but remained winless in seven starts since Aug. 9. He allowed two runs without issuing a walk.

With the loss, Minnesota’s lead over Detroit for the final AL wild-card position was sliced to one half a game. The Twins own the tiebreaker over the Tigers and the clubs are done with their season series.

“We had some guys do some pretty great things out there, but it probably hurts more because we’re fighting for everything right now,” Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said.

Guardians starter Tanner Bibee worked 6 2/3 innings and gave up two runs. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.82 ERA in four games against Minnesota this season.

Twins: OF Trevor Larnach (hamstring), who has a career-high 15 homers, served as the designated hitter for his sixth game in a row. Baldelli said Larnach should return to his regular spot in left field before the start of the postseason.

Guardians: RHP Alex Cobb (right third finger blister), who is eligible to come off the injured list on Sept. 24, will determine whether he throws a simulated game or makes a start for Triple-A Columbus. “Really, Alex is driving the bus on this,” Vogt said.

    Up next

Twins RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (5-5, 4.08 ERA) faces Guardians LHP Joey Cantillo (2-3, 4.99 ERA) in the four-game series finale Thursday.
