  • Cavaliers beat Hornets 118-113 for 7th straight victory

    [ad_1]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Donovan Mitchell scored 13 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter and the streaking Cleveland Cavaliers held off the Charlotte Hornets 118-113 on Friday night for their seventh straight victory and 12th win in 13 games.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Cleveland Cavaliers held off the Charlotte Hornets 118-113 for their seventh straight victory Friday night
    • Donovan Mitchell scored 13 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter
    • The Cavs will be at Oklahoma City on Sunday

Jared Allen had 25 points and 14 rebounds and James Harden added 18 points and eight assists for the Cavaliers.

Charlotte’s Kon Knueppel finished with 33 points on seven 3-pointers, giving him 193 made 3s for the season — the second most in NBA history by a rookie. Keegan Murray holds the record with 206 set in the 2022-23 season.

LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller each had 18 points and rookie Ryan Kalkbrenner added 12 points and 13 rebounds for Charlotte.

Miller’s and-one layup off a no-look feed from Ball cut Cleveland’s lead to four with a minute remaining, but Mitchell made a short jumper and four free throws in the final 40 seconds to seal the win.

The Cavaliers built a 14-point lead in the second quarter and looked like they were preparing to break the game open, but Knueppel began to heat up, finishing with four 3s and 16 points in the first half to cut Cleveland’s lead in to six. Charlotte took the lead late in the third quarter behind three more Knueppel 3s.

But Mitchell began to take over with his physical play. He got to the line 13 times and made 12 free throws.

Charlotte played without suspended forwards Miles Bridges and Moussa Diabate and Grant Williams, who sat out with knee injury management forcing them to play younger, less experienced players in the frontcourt.

The Cavaliers outscored the Hornets 50-28 in the paint.

The Hornets have now lost three of their last four games after winning nine straight games just before the All-Star break.

  • A look at Donovan Mitchell’s emotional week

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Donovan Mitchell was already in store for an emotional week.

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard was selected to the NBA All-Star Game for the seventh straight season and will watch his fiancée, Coco Jones, sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before Super Bowl 60 on Sunday.

    What You Need To Know

    • Donovan Mitchell is having an emotional week
    • The Cleveland Cavaliers guard has been selected for his seventh NBA All-Star Game
    • His fiancée, Coco Jones, will sing at the Super Bowl 60 pregame ceremonies on Sunday
    • Things changed on Wednesday when the Cavaliers traded Darius Garland for James Harden

Things took an unexpected turn on Wednesday when the Cavaliers traded Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers for James Harden.

“It’s been a lot. There’s just so much going on,” Mitchell said after Cleveland’s 124-91 victory over the Clippers on Wednesday night.

The Cavaliers are on their longest road trip of the season and face the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night. Mitchell will then travel three hours to Santa Clara, California, to watch Jones perform before rejoining the Cavaliers in Denver for Monday’s game against the Nuggets.

Mitchell and the Grammy-winning singer announced their engagement last July after two years of dating. When the Cavaliers were eliminated in five games by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals last year, Mitchell said he was taking time off and “going on tour with good music.”

Jones was on tour last summer after releasing her debut studio album.

“I’m excited for her. It’s just great to see the success she’s having in her own right. She deserves this,” Mitchell said last week before the Cavaliers started their six-game road trip. “It’s something that is new for me to kind of just watch it. As much as I am her fiancée, I’m a fan of her work and her work ethic. And to see it on the biggest stage, it’s special.”

Mitchell, in his ninth season, is sixth in the NBA in scoring and averaging a career-high 28.8 points. He also leads the NBA with 178 made 3-pointers.

The Harden trade moves Mitchell back to full-time shooting guard. Garland was sidelined for stretches this season with big toe injuries, and Mitchell took on some point guard duties.

Harden, expected to make his Cavaliers debut Saturday night, is averaging 25.4 points per game and is on track for his best season since 2019-20.

“I think our ceiling is definitely higher when you have a guy like James Harden. You know what he brings, but with that, there’s definitely a higher expectation,” Mitchell said Wednesday night. “It’s not gonna always be pretty. You make a move at the deadline, there’s gonna be bumps in the road, but for us this is the time.”

Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman also admitted there will be a little bit of an acclimation period for his new backcourt to get up to speed.

“We’re going to have to adapt to James. He’s that good a player, but I think we’re going to still run,” he said. “We need to get the ball in Donovan’s hands, and we need to get the ball in James’ hands so that we’re going to have a great possession. And in the playoffs, I do still think it comes down to largely a half-court game, and so we really are thinking about that.”

Jones said during a press conference on Thursday that taking part in the Super Bowl is “pretty much the top of the top.” Her father, Mike Jones, was on the Tennessee Titans squad that played in Super Bowl 34.

“I just think that this is one of the most highly-viewed events of all time, and so it’s hard to compete. Maybe my wedding will be up there,” she said.

However, Mitchell hopes this will not be Jones’ only Super Bowl appearance.

“She’s going to perform at the Super Bowl at halftime,” he said. “That’s the next goal. She’s going to keep doing her thing, but it’s a blessing to be able to somehow find a way to be a couple of hours away the night before. So it’s going to be special.”

  • Cavs partner with local company for fully traceable, sustainable retail line

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers are continuing their commitment toward environmental progress at Rocket Arena and in northeast Ohio by producing one of the first fully traceable and sustainable merchandise lines in professional sports.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Cleveland Cavaliers partnered with Cleveland-based Found Surface to create a fully traceable and sustainable merchandise line
    • Over 100 pounds of material waste were composted locally and all dye-process water was recycled during the manufacturing process
    • The Cavaliers are one of the first professional sports teams to have a fully traceable and sustainable retail line

Inside a warehouse in The Flats, you’ll hear the sounds of cutting, sewing, and tagging.

“It’s a very rigorous process,” Found Surface’s Christian Marcano said. “All the way from the start to the end.”

Marcano works for the Cleveland-based company Found Surface. He said making each piece of clothing is an art form.

“We try to be intricate and just making sure that this is not a machine press to start way to get our clothes out,” said Marcano. “It’s a lot of craftsmanship involved.”

That craftsmanship can now be seen inside Rocket Arena.

“We are the first, and as far as I know, the only professional sports team to have a fully domestically traceable retail line,” said Cavaliers Vice President of Sustainability and Environmental Services Danielle Doza.

Doza said partnering with Found Surface was an easy decision because of the environmental benefits. The organic cotton was grown in Texas and made its way to Cleveland, where the clothing was made.

“Through the manufacturing process, the waste from this process is actually composted locally,” Doza said. “All of that waste is turned into soil and kept right here in northeast Ohio. The process uses a low-enzyme dye, and all that water is recycled and used in the next batch of manufacturing.”

Cleveland Cavaliers director of retail marketing Amy Armstrong thinks the merchandise line helps bring the team and community closer.

“We’re really strengthening and elevating this community by just working with all of these local partners that we have here,” said Armstrong. “With Found Surface being right down the street, they’re the manufacturer for us. All of the designs are inspired by our Metro parks. It’s a great way to strengthen and uplift this community in Cleveland.”

Marcano hopes Found Surface can continue making a difference and that the partnership with the Cavs will give them the opportunity to do just that.

“We just want to continue to be sustainable and just show that we can make anything for anyone,” he said. “I know for me, along with everybody else at Found Surface, this has got to be a dream come true. Being able to put the ‘Made in Cleveland’ tags on these pieces is super important.”

  • Cavaliers’ Darius Garland out at least a week with sprained toe

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Cavaliers guard Darius Garland will be sidelined for at least one week due to a sprained right great toe.

Garland suffered the injury on Jan. 14 at Philadelphia and missed Friday’s game against the 76ers. The Cavaliers said further evaluation and imaging on Saturday revealed a Grade 1 sprain. The seventh-year guard will be reevaluated in seven to 10 days as he undergoes treatment.

The two-time All-Star has missed 16 games this season due to a nagging injury to his left great toe, which he struggled with during the closing month of last season and the playoffs. Garland had surgery on the toe during the offseason.

Garland is averaging 20.2 points and 7.4 assists over this last 16 games. He was shooting 50.4% from the floor and made 42 of 100 3-pointers.

The Cavaliers have been plagued by injuries all season. After having the best record in the Eastern Conference last season, they are 24-19 and fifth in the East going into Monday afternoon’s game against the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

Donovan Mitchell added 13 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds for Cleveland, which rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers defeated the 76ers 133-107 on Wednesday.

Joel Embiid scored 33 points and Tyrese Maxey had 22 points, nine assists and five steals for the 76ers.

Cleveland was without Darius Garland (right big toe soreness) and Sam Merrill (right hand sprain), who were both injured on Wednesday. Coach Kenny Atkinson said both will be reevaluated when the team returns to Cleveland this weekend.

The 76ers looked in control when Paul George hit a jumper with 8:47 remaining for an 11-point lead. But the Cavaliers used a 13-2 run, capped by De’Andre Hunter’s 3-pointer with 5:53 left, to tie it at 102. Philadelphia moved ahead by seven points after turnovers by the Cavs on three straight possessions, but Cleveland hung around.

Hunter’s layup with just over a minute left put the Cavs up a point. After Mobley made one of two free throws with 22.7 seconds remaining, Maxey tied it on a runner with 8.1 seconds left. After a timeout, Tyson set up Mobley near the basket for an easy dunk to put Cleveland in front by two. Maxey’s shot from just beyond half court that could have won the game went long.

Dominick Barlow was back in the lineup for Philadelphia after leaving Wednesday’s game early due to a back contusion. He was questionable entering the contest and finished with two points.

Cleveland fell a point shy of matching the franchise record for a regulation game, set at Denver in a 149-135 victory last Dec. 28. The overall mark came in a 154-153 quadruple-overtime victory at home over the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 29, 1980. The Cavaliers also had 148 points at home in a December 1991 victory over Miami.

Both teams are home Saturday night to complete back-to-backs.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Damon Jones were arrested Thursday in connection with a federal investigation into illegal sports betting and rigged poker games backed by Mafia.

    What You Need To Know

    • Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier and Damon Jones were arrested Thursday in connection with a federal investigation into illegal sports betting and rigged poker games backed by Mafia
    • Authorities said Billups is charged in an indictment alleging a wide-ranging scheme to rig underground poker games that were backed by Mafia families
    • Rozier and Jones are accused in a separate indictment of participating in an illegal sports betting scheme using private insider NBA information

Billups is charged in an indictment alleging a wide-ranging scheme to rig underground poker games that were backed by Mafia families, authorities said. Rozier and Jones are accused in a separate indictment of participating in an illegal sports betting scheme using private insider NBA information.

Here’s a look at the NBA figures involved:

    Damon Jones

Jones, 49, was an unofficial assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2022-23 when he allegedly was involved with the betting scheme, according to the indictment. He’s been coaching since at least 2014 after finishing an 11-year NBA playing career.

He is from Galveston, Texas, and played for Houston in college before suiting up with NBA teams in New Jersey, Boston, Golden State, Dallas, Vancouver, Detroit, Sacramento, Milwaukee, Miami and Cleveland.

Jones averaged 11.6 points in the 2004-05 season with Miami, his only season scoring in double figures.

Jones joined Cleveland’s coaching staff in 2014 as a shooting consultant. He was on Tyronn Lue’s Cleveland staff for the postseason in 2016 and was named a full-time assistant for the Cavaliers later that year. He also worked as a TV analyst for ESPN in 2018.

    Chauncey Billups

Billups, 49, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2024. The Denver native played college ball at Colorado, then was the No. 3 pick by Boston in 1997. He also played for Toronto, Denver (two stints), Minnesota, Detroit (two stints), the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Clippers in a 17-year playing career.

Billups was a five-time All-Star and won a championship with Detroit in 2004, when he was named the NBA Finals MVP.

On Nov. 16, 2020, Billups was named a Clippers assistant on coach Tyronn Lue’s staff. Billups was hired as Portland’s coach in 2021 and signed a multi-year extension with the Trail Blazers on April 13. Billups took a 117-211 coaching record into this season.

Billups was known as Mr. Big Shot during his playing career and won the Joe Dumars Trophy, the NBA’s sportsmanship award, in 2009 while playing for his hometown Nuggets.

    Terry Rozier

Rozier, 30, was raised primarily by his mother as his father, Terry Rozier Sr., has been in prison for most of the younger Rozier’s life. Rozier, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, was a standout guard at Louisville who was the 16th pick by the Boston Celtics in 2015.

Rozier was traded to Charlotte on July 6, 2019 and flourished with the Hornets. He set career highs by averaging 18 points in the 2019-20 season, 20.4 points the following season and 21.1 points in 2022-23.

Onn Jan. 23, 2024, Rozier was traded to Miami for Kyle Lowry. Rozier averaged 10.6 points for Miami in the 2024-25 season while playing in 64 games, including 23 starts.

In 2018, Rozier became only the second player in NBA history to record a triple-double in his first start when he scored 17 points with 11 rebounds and 10 assists in Boston’s 103-73 win over the Knicks.

Rozier’s game on March 23, 2023 for Charlotte against New Orleans has been in question. He played the first 9 minutes and 36 seconds in the first quarter before exiting and did not play again in that game or the final eight games of the season. Charlotte was not in playoff contention, so it did not seem particularly unusual that Rozier was shut down. However, posts still online from that 2023 game show that some bettors were furious with sportsbooks. Many posted on social media that something “shady” had gone on regarding the prop bets involving Rozier’s stats for that night.

A prop is a type of wager that allows gamblers to bet on whether a player will exceed a certain statistical number, such as whether the player will finish over or under a certain total of points, rebounds, assists and more.

Rozier was in uniform as the Heat played the Magic in Orlando Wednesday evening, though he did not play in the game.

    What You Need To Know

    • He was declared cancer-free after treatment for a rare bone tumor called Ewing sarcoma
    • He and his family will also be allowed to travel on the team’s plane, with the Cavs, to a game

The Cavs court was transformed into a beachside casino for their annual Wine & Gold Gala. Hundreds got dolled up for a good cause.

Evan Lallo was one of the night’s honorees. The 14-year-old has been declared cancer-free after treatment for a rare bone tumor called Ewing sarcoma.

Lallo was diagnosed at the start of the Cavs season. He and his family watched Cavs games during his 70 days in the hospital.

Lallo’s wish while receiving chemotherapy was to meet Cavs players, but the team is going beyond that. The Lallo family will travel on the team’s plane, with the Cavs, to a game.

There’s one thing evan is looking forward to the most.

“Definitely spending time with them, getting to know them a little more, knowing what the public doesn’t know about, you know, watching them play,” he said.

“Now he can go to school, he can play sports, be with his friends,” Evan’s dad, Matt Lallo, said. “It’s just, the little things now mean a lot to us.”

“He is our very own comeback kid,” said his mom, Megan Lallo.

  • Cavs’ Larry Nance Jr. to appear on show to discuss NBA, soccer

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Larry Nance Jr. is going to shed some light on why so many NBA players have become big fans of international soccer.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Cleveland Cavaliers forward has teamed up with the Men in Blazers Media Network to launch a digital show called “Switch the Play”
    • The ties between soccer and the NBA have never seemed to run so deep
    • The NBA even modeled its NBA Cup in-season tournament in part around what has worked in European soccer regarding in-season trophy play

The Cleveland Cavaliers forward has teamed up with the Men in Blazers Media Network to launch a digital show called “Switch the Play,” a weekly program that will feature those NBA players who are soccer aficionados and discuss happenings in the game.

The first episode, featuring Alex Caruso of the NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder, debuts Thursday.

“I entered the NBA in 2015, and I was probably one of only a couple of guys in the league that could tell you who won the Premier League the previous season,” Nance said. “Now, soccer is a constant conversation starter in the locker room. Soccer’s popularity has grown so much over the past 10 years, as has the international influence on the NBA creating more and more players that follow the game consistently.”

The ties between soccer and the NBA have never seemed to run so deep.

Many of basketball’s top stars — Victor Wembanyama, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Luka Doncic, James Harden, Joel Embiid and more — make no secret of their fascination with soccer. Wembanyama was on the field for a Paris Saint Germain-Manchester City game in Paris last winter when he and the San Antonio Spurs were there for a pair of games against the Indiana Pacers. The Spurs center also went viral this summer for taking part in pickup soccer games around the world.

The fandom goes both ways: Soccer icon Lionel Messi and other Inter Miami stars were at a Miami Heat game in 2024, Real Madrid stars Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe are regulars at NBA games and Butler said last season he’s lost count of how many jerseys he’s exchanged with soccer standouts at NBA games.

The NBA even modeled its NBA Cup in-season tournament in part around what has worked in European soccer regarding in-season trophy play.

“This show will give stars from around the league the opportunity to let fans hear them talk about their soccer fandom, parallels in the two games, and how we see it as professional athletes,” Nance said.

Nance played soccer until he was 16 and is now part owner of Premier League club Leeds United — becoming an investor in 2023 along with Indiana guard T.J. McConnell. Now 33, he is entering his 11th NBA season with career averages of 7.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Nance signed with Cleveland as a free agent in July. It’s his second stint with the Cavs; he was previously with the club from 2018 through 2021.

  • Cavaliers embark on search for next coach

Cavaliers embark on search for next coach

    [ad_1]

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — J.B. Bickerstaff didn’t do anything wrong to deserve being fired. The Cavaliers just feel like they reached their limit with him.

    What You Need To Know

    • Altman said he and his staff will use the holiday weekend to decompress before reconvening and beginning their first search for a new coach in five years
    • Altman intimated he doesn’t have a list of candidates yet, adding the new coach will have to fit “very highly specific” criteria
    • Bickerstaff was fired one week after the Cavs’ playoff run — the team’s deepest since 2018 and longest without LeBron James on the roster since 1993

A day after Bickerstaff was let go despite winning 99 games the past two seasons and taking the Cavs into the second round of the NBA playoffs despite numerous injuries in 2024, president of basketball operations Koby Altman tried to explain the rationale behind the somewhat shocking dismissal.

Altman praised Bickerstaff’s many successes in his four-plus seasons, but feels the Cavs need a new leader.

“Someone with a new approach, someone with a different voice, a fresh set of eyes to help us move forward,” Altman said Friday. “We’ve accomplished a lot in the last few years, getting to a conference semifinal and we don’t want to be complacent.

“We feel we’re not far off.”

Altman said he and his staff will use the holiday weekend to decompress before reconvening and beginning their first search for a new coach in five years.

Altman intimated he doesn’t have a list of candidates yet, adding the new coach will have to fit “very highly specific” criteria.

Bickerstaff was fired one week after the Cavs’ playoff run — the team’s deepest since 2018 and longest without LeBron James on the roster since 1993 — ended with a second-round loss to the Boston Celtics. Cleveland played the final two games of that series without All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell due to a calf injury.

Mitchell can sign a four-year, $200 million contract extension with the Cavs this summer, and Altman believes the 27-year-old is committed to chasing a title in Cleveland.

“This is a player that has had two of the best years of his career here, has had a lot of success here, understands the infrastructure,” Altman said. “I think he has a lot of trust in what we’re doing and understands that our goal is to win a championship.”
