  • Cleveland Browns announce new coordinators

    [ad_1]

BEREA, Ohio — Late last month, the Cleveland Browns announced they hired Todd Monken as the new head coach, replacing Kevin Stefanski, who was fired on Jan. 5, the day after Cleveland finished a 5-12 season.

But a football team is a lot more than just the head coach. Now, the team has announced its three coordinators for 2026.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Cleveland Browns have named three individuals as coordinators for 2026
    • They are Travis Switzer, Mike Rutenberg and Byron Storer
    • The team hired Todd Monken as the new head coach last month

“You’re always looking for coaches that never forget that we have a job for our players,” Monken said. “That’s first and foremost, and our job is to maximize our players’ measurable skill set. I always say to aspire to be the best coach they’ve ever had.”

For the position of offensive coordinator, they are bringing in Travis Switzer, who spent nine seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. Monken had spent his previous three seasons as the offensive coordinator with Baltimore.

“He was our run game coordinator, and that’s where it all starts with your ability to run the football,” Monken said in the release. “So, he’s ready for this challenge. He’s intentional, he’s intelligent and he can teach.”

For the position of defensive coordinator, they’re adding Mike Rutenberg, a coach with 14 years of experience in the league.

“He’d been in a similar system, but not the exact system because Jim (Schwartz) was unique,” Monken said in the release. “And they can say attacking style, but then there’s attacking style, which is what they’ve done here up front. And I think that background of being a four-down attacking style, but not exact, (and) to add some things that they had done before that I thought would mesh really well with the current staff, was a big part of that. And I thought his energy, his ability to teach, his juice, I mean, it popped. It was what I was looking for.”

Finally, for special teams coordinator, the Browns will have Byron Storer. He’d been with the Green Bay Packers for four seasons and has 12 years coaching experience in the NFL.

“First off, his journey – going to Cal, playing special teams little bit in the NFL, into coaching, out of coaching and into the business world, then back into coaching. Being with one of the best special teams to ever do it in Rich Bisaccia. Matt LaFleur just absolutely standing on the table for him was huge,” Monken said in the release. “Unbelievable presentation when we interviewed him, he was more than ready. It was obvious when I got done interviewing him that we had to have him here.”

Earlier this month, Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz resigned from the position after three seasons.

Schwartz has led one of the league’s top defenses over the past three seasons but was upset about being passed over for the head coach job, after many thought he was the favorite to replace Kevin Stefanski.

  • Shedeur Sanders to be an AFC quarterback for the Pro Bowl Games, AP source says

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Shedeur Sanders has been selected as a replacement QB on the AFC’s roster for next week’s Pro Bowl Games, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday.

    What You Need To Know

    • The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the NFL has not announced roster changes
    • The Cleveland Browns rookie was a fifth-round pick after many thought he would go earlier in the draft
    • Sanders was not selected as one of the four alternate selections at quarterback when the rosters were first announced

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the NFL has not announced roster changes. Yahoo Sports was the first to report on Sanders’ addition.

The Cleveland Browns rookie was a fifth-round pick after many thought he would go earlier in the draft. Sanders played in eight games, and started the Browns’ final seven games, going 3-4. He had a 56.6% completion rate and 68.1 passer rating along with 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

New England’s Drake Maye, Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers and Buffalo’s Josh Allen were on the original AFC roster when the selections were announced on Dec. 23.

Maye is unable to participate because of the Patriots advancing to the Super Bowl, while Herbert and Allen dealt with injuries at the end of their seasons.

Other AFC quarterbacks, including Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, Indianapolis’ Daniel Jones and Denver’s Bo Nix also suffered season-ending injuries. Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence was one of the top alternates, but Lawrence opted not to play in the event.

Sanders was not selected as one of the four alternate selections at quarterback when the rosters were first announced.

Finding players to fill out Pro Bowl rosters because of injuries has always been a challenge, but it has increased since the NFL did away with the exhibition full-contact all-star game format and went to a weeklong skills competition and flag football game beginning with the 2022 season.

Tyler Huntley made it as an alternate three years ago after throwing two touchdowns and three interceptions in four starts with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Pro Bowl Games will take place in San Francisco ahead of the Super Bowl. Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice (NFC) and Steve Young (AFC) are the coaches for the flag football showdown on Feb. 3.

  • Grant Udinski interviews for Cleveland Browns’ head coaching job

    [ad_1]

BEREA, Ohio — Jacksonville offensive coordinator Grant Udinski interviewed with the Cleveland Browns for their head coaching vacancy on Saturday.

    What You Need To Know

    • Jacksonville offensive coordinator Grant Udinski interviewed with the Cleveland Browns for their head coaching vacancy
    • The 30-year-old Udinski just completed his first season with the Jaguars. He directed an offense that ranked sixth in scoring and 11th in total offense
    • Quarterback Trevor Lawrence accounted for 38 touchdowns as Jacksonville went 13-4 in the regular season
    • Cleveland needs a head coach after firing Kevin Stefanski on Jan. 5 following six seasons

Udinski, 30, just completed his first season with the Jaguars. Even though coach Liam Coen called the offensive plays, Udinski directed a unit that was sixth in the league in scoring (27.9 points per game) and 11th in total offense (337.4 points per game). Quarterback Trevor Lawrence accounted for 38 touchdowns (29 passing, nine rushing) as Jacksonville went 13-4 in the regular season and won the AFC South for the first time since 2022. The Jaguars lost to Buffalo in the wild card round last Sunday.

Udinski began his NFL career as a coaching assistant at Carolina (2020-21) before spending three seasons in Minnesota (2022-24). He was an assistant to the head coach/special projects in 2022 with the Vikings before being promoted to assistant offensive coordinator and assistant quarterbacks coach in 2024.

The Browns are the only team that has conducted or requested an interview with Udinski so far.

Cleveland needs a head coach after it fired Kevin Stefanski on Jan. 5 following six seasons and a 46-58 overall record. Stefanski was a two-time AP NFL Coach of the Year and led the Browns to the playoffs in 2020 and ’23.

The Browns have interviewed nine people, including four this week. Former Miami head coach Mike McDaniel interviewed on Monday, while Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase went on Friday.

Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Seattle defensive coordinator Aden Durde, Cincinnati offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher and Baltimore offensive coordinator Todd Monken interviewed last week.

  • Dolphins interview Kevin Stefanski for coaching vacancy

    [ad_1]

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Former Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has interviewed with the Miami Dolphins for their head coaching vacancy.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Dolphins began reaching out to candidates after hiring Jon-Eric Sullivan as their general manager last week
    • Miami interviewed Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak on Saturday
    • Stefanski, 43, is a two-time AP NFL Coach of the Year and has interviewed with several teams looking for a new head coach, including Tennessee, Atlanta and Baltimore

The Dolphins began reaching out to candidates after hiring Jon-Eric Sullivan as their general manager last week, a day after firing coach Mike McDaniel following four seasons.

Miami interviewed Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak on Saturday.

Stefanski, 43, is a two-time AP NFL Coach of the Year and has interviewed with several teams looking for a new head coach, including Tennessee, Atlanta and Baltimore. He was fired last week by Cleveland with a 46-58 record in six seasons.

The Dolphins are expected to complete more interviews in the coming days but had been linked to former Baltimore coach John Harbaugh, who was fired by the Ravens after 18 seasons. The team has not announced an interview with Harbaugh.

Stefanski would be a different coaching hire from what Miami owner Stephen Ross typically has chosen.

Ross has not hired someone with previous head coaching experience since becoming the Dolphins’ majority owner in 2009 — recently gambling on Joe Philbin (2012-2015), Adam Gase (2016-18), Brian Flores (2019-21) and McDaniel (2022-25).

  • Myles Garrett sets NFL single-season sack record with 23rd sack

    [ad_1]

CINCINNATI — Cleveland Browns All-Pro pass rusher Myles Garrett set the NFL’s single-season sack record with 5:09 remaining during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

    What You Need To Know

    • Garrett sacked Joe Burrow for a 6-yard loss on first-and-10 at the Browns 45-yard line
    • Burrow was in the shotgun formation when he saw Garrett coming and went down
    • Garrett suprassed Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt for the records

Garrett sacked Joe Burrow for a 6-yard loss on first-and-10 at the Browns 45-yard line. Burrow was in the shotgun formation when he saw Garrett coming and went down.

Garrett came into the game needing one sack to surpass the mark of 22 1/2 shared by Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan (in 2001 with the New York Giants) and Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt in 2021.

The sack in some ways was similar to Strahan’s record-breaking sack of Green Bay’s Brett Favre. Both players didn’t put up much of a challenge when they saw an oncoming pass rusher.

Garrett’s teammates celebrated his 23rd sack even though Cincinnati tried to go no-huddle on the next play.

Garrett has sacked 51 players over his nine-year NFL career. Burrow is at the top of the list at 12 in 10 meetings.

The NFL did not start counting sacks as an official statistic until 1982. Mark Gastineau of the New York Jets had 22 in 1984 until Strahan surpassed that late in the fourth quarter of the New York Giants’ 2001 season finale against Green Bay. Favre went down to the ground as Strahan was approaching to set the mark. Watt tied the record during the final game in 2021 at Baltimore by taking down Ravens QB Tyler Huntley.

Garrett has recorded at least half a sack in 11 of 12 games including Sunday. That includes a team-record five against the New England Patriots on Oct. 26, four against the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 14 and three one week later at Las Vegas.

  • Myles Garrett will try to break NFL sacks record in finale against Bengals

    [ad_1]

CINCINNATI — Myles Garrett has sacked Joe Burrow plenty of times in the six seasons since Burrow was the top overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020.

    What You Need To Know

    • Myles Garrett is on the brink of setting the NFL’s single-season sack record
    • He needs one more to surpass Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt’s record of 22 1/2. Garrett has sacked Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson the most, with 11 each
    • The Browns face the Bengals on Sunday and Garrett is confident about breaking the record
    • Meanwhile, the Browns’ Kevin Stefanski could be coaching his last game as the team has struggled since making the playoffs in 2023

That’s why it would be fitting if the Cleveland Browns All-Pro pass rusher takes down the Bengals quarterback Sunday to tie or set the NFL’s single-season sacks record.

“He’s got me a lot,” Burrow said.

Eleven times, actually. That’s tied with Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson for the most among the 51 players Garrett has sacked.

For the season, Garrett is at 22 sacks and needs one to surpass Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt’s shared mark of 22 1/2.

“I’ve seen his face on the ground looking up at me saying, ‘Hi, Myles’ and ‘Hi, Joe’, too many times. So yeah, I figured he’d be at the top,” Garrett said Friday about Burrow’s spot on his personal sacks list.

Garrett had two sacks in the Browns’ 17-16 loss to the Bengals in the season opener. He’s also three away from achieving his goal of 25, which he has had written on his right wrist tape since early in the season.

“My confidence hasn’t wavered,” Garrett said of setting the record. “I’m fully confident that it will come.”

Burrow said the one thing he has appreciated about Garrett is the ability to remain even-keeled despite what is taking place around him.

“He’s more athletic than everybody else on the field. He’s bigger, stronger than everybody else,” Burrow said. “He has a mindset that he’s not too high or too low at any point, which is pretty unique for a defensive lineman. I think he’s probably got a unique mindset as far as that position goes, but it’s one that you can appreciate.”

Both teams would like to end the season with a win.

Cleveland (4-12) surpassed its win total from last year with a 13-6 victory over Pittsburgh last week. Cincinnati (6-10) has two straight weeks during which it has scored at least 37 points after being shut out against Baltimore on Dec. 14.

    Stefanski’s future

Kevin Stefanski could be coaching his last game for the Browns on Sunday. He’s a two-time NFL coach of the year, but Cleveland has gone 7-26 since making the playoffs in 2023.

Stefanski, who has a 44-56 record, has refused to address his future the past couple weeks. He has led the Browns for six seasons, the longest tenure for a Cleveland coach since Sam Rutigliano, who was at the helm for 6 1/2 seasons from 1978 through ’84.

“This game is never going to be about one person, and that includes me,” Stefanski said on Friday.

If the Browns part ways with Stefanski, it likely won’t take long. Since Jimmy Haslam became owner in 2012, the news of a coaching change has happened on Sunday night after the final game.

“I want things to be successful. However that looks,” said Garrett about if he would prefer to see continuity with the coaching staff.

    Taylor’s time

Zac Taylor appears set for an eighth season in Cincinnati despite a 52-62-1 mark and not making the playoffs for the third straight year.

Taylor has two seasons remaining on his contract and owner Mike Brown is conservative when it comes to making changes. Taylor also has the backing of Burrow, who has often expressed his support for not only his coach, but the front office.

    Short-handed

Cleveland rookie QB Shedeur Sanders will be without his leading rusher and receiver.

Running back Quinshon Judkins was lost for the season with a broken leg on Dec. 21 against Buffalo, and tight end Harold Fannin Jr. has been declared out due to a groin injury. Fannin first suffered it during practice on Dec. 26 and aggravated it two days later against Pittsburgh after catching a 28-yard touchdown pass from Sanders.

Sanders is 2-4 and averaging 207 passing yards per game in his six starts.

“Just stay consistent, taking what they give me,” Sanders said about his goals for the final start. “Whenever we get off rhythm, get back on rhythm, get back on track. And I think that’s the next part of my game I’m trying to evolve is whenever it’s either we’re stagnant or some adversity comes and being able to get back on track.”

    Signs of improvement

The Bengals’ defense is ranked near the bottom of most categories — including last in total and yards rushing allowed — but it has done a better job of forcing turnovers during the latter half of the season.

Cincinnati has forced 11 takeaways the last six games, tied for third most in the NFL during that span.

More could come against the Browns as Sanders has thrown seven interceptions the past three games.

  • Aaron Rodgers and Steelers could win the AFC North before they play the Browns

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Aaron Rodgers doesn’t plan on changing his sleep schedule Saturday night, even though his Pittsburgh Steelers could wrap up a division title without playing.

    What You Need To Know

    • Even though his Pittsburgh Steelers could wrap up a division title without playing, Aaron Rodgers doesn’t plan on making any changes to his sleep schedule
    • If the Green Bay Packers beat the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers would secure their first AFC North title since 2020, making Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns essentially meaningless
    • Rodgers says he won’t change his approach even if the Steelers have the division wrapped up
    • One thing the Browns have to play for is Myles Garrett’s pursuit of the NFL single-season sack record. He needs one sack to beat the mark of 22 1/2 held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt

If the Green Bay Packers — Rodgers’ former team — beat the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers (9-6) would secure their first AFC North title since 2020, making Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns (3-12) essentially meaningless.

Rodgers said he won’t change his approach, even if the Steelers have a playoff spot wrapped up before kickoff.

“I’m preparing to play and excited about playing,” he said.

Pittsburgh, which has won three straight to wrap up its 19th straight winning season, is likely to finish as the AFC’s fourth seed. The Steelers would need to beat Cleveland and Baltimore next week along with Jacksonville and Houston losing out to have a chance of improving their position.

If Pittsburgh wins the AFC North, it would be Rodgers’ ninth division title as a starting quarterback. That would tie him with Joe Montana for third most. Tom Brady leads with 19 and Peyton Manning had 12.

One thing the Browns have to play for is Myles Garrett’s pursuit of the single-season NFL sack record. Garrett has 22 and needs one to surpass Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt’s mark of 22 1/2.

Watt, the Steelers’ star pass rusher, will miss a third straight game as he recovers from surgery to repair a partially collapsed lung.

Garrett has faced Rodgers twice and has not sacked him. Breaking the record and making Rodgers the 52nd player Garrett has sacked would be special for the All-Pro pass rusher.

“He’s legendary himself and it’s a legendary record. I’m here to chase him. That would be a great one to put a picture on the wall with,” Garrett said. “He’s going to make it difficult, but I feel like I am very capable of fighting through everything and have some teammates who can free me up.”

Rodgers has been pressured on a league-low 21.9% of his dropbacks. He has the league’s quickest release, averaging just 2.63 seconds to throw.

“You’re not going to fool a player of that caliber who has seen so much defense,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “You feel at times watching the tape that he’s one step ahead of the defense. He’s able to see things so quickly.”

    Steelers missing suspended Metcalf

The Steelers will be without top wide receiver DK Metcalf, who has been suspended for Pittsburgh’s final two games following an altercation with a fan at Detroit last week.

Metcalf will finish the season with a career-low 850 yards receiving, and his 59 catches are his fewest since his rookie year with Seattle in 2019. But his presence on the field creates opportunities for teammates.

Now those teammates, including recently signed veterans Adam Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, will have a chance to prove Pittsburgh’s passing attack is more than a one-man show. It helps that Rodgers spreads the ball around. Eleven Steelers have touchdown catches this season, tied for most in the league.

“I think there’s a lot of guys on this offense that can make plays,” Thielen said. “Whether it’s the tight end room, I think there’s a lot of versatility there. Running back room … and then in the receiver room, just a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things.”

    More injury woes for Browns

Cleveland rookie QB Shedeur Sanders was already going into the game short-handed after running back Quinshon Judkins suffering a season-ending leg injury last week against Buffalo. Now, he might be without his leading receiver.

Tight end Harold Fannin suffered a groin injury during Friday’s practice. Fannin had touchdowns rushing and receiving last week. He leads NFL rookies in catches (70), is tied for third in touchdown receptions (five) and is fourth in receiving yards (701).

Stefanski said Fannin is likely to be a game-time decision.

Dillon Gabriel suffered a shoulder injury on Friday, meaning Bailey Zappe could be called up from the practice squad to back up Sanders.

Steelers’ Warren and Gainwell support each other

Pittsburgh’s running back tandem of Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell has become one of the best duos in the league, combining for 15 touchdowns and more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage.

While the Steelers gave Warren a modest contract extension just before the start of the season, there really is no definitive first-string running back, which is just the way offensive coordinator Arthur Smith likes it.

“There’s a lot of trust in those players,” Smith said.

Warren and Gainwell — who signed a one-year deal last spring after spending four seasons in Philadelphia — are quick to celebrate each other’s accomplishments, and their team-first attitude has permeated an offense that might be the most democratic in the league. Eight players have at least 150 yards from scrimmage for Pittsburgh this season.

  • Browns’ QB question: Stay the course with Gabriel or give Sanders a shot?

    [ad_1]

BEREA, Ohio — In another disappointing Browns season marked by the ongoing struggles to find a reliable quarterback, Cleveland faces a question: Stay with Dillon Gabriel or give Shedeur Sanders a shot?

    What You Need To Know

    • The Cleveland Browns are grappling with quarterback issues in another tough season
    • With a 2-6 record at the bye week, the team must decide whether to stick with Dillon Gabriel or give Shedeur Sanders a chance
    • Coach Kevin Stefanski and his staff are evaluating the offense, which has struggled beyond just the quarterback position

With the Browns at 2-6 entering their bye week, it is more a matter of when Sanders — their highly publicized, fifth-round draft pick — will take his first NFL snaps and get his first start. Presumably, it will happen sometime between now and the Jan. 4 season finale at Cincinnati.

As Kevin Stefanski, his coaching staff and the front office assess the first half of the Browns’ season, much of their time will be spent trying to fix a punchless offense whose problems go beyond who is under center.

“I think it’s by position we have to be better and we have to put our players in better spots, if you will, and that includes every position. So, we’ll look at all of it this week and make a decision coming out of the bye,” Stefanski said on Monday.

When it comes to Sanders, Stefanski has said, “Honestly, my focus is where we are right now. That’s not my focus.”

Sanders has mainly practiced with the scout team, moving from third-string to backup after Joe Flacco was traded to Cincinnati.

Another variable could be Deshaun Watson, who was thought to be out for the season after a second Achilles tendon injury in January. Watson has recently posted videos on social media showing him working out on the indoor field at the Browns’ facility.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin isn’t the only one wondering why the Browns were quick to move on from Flacco.

The veteran was benched after starting Cleveland’s first four games. Flacco had an NFL-low 60.3 passer rating, the league’s second-worst completion rate (58.1%), and six interceptions when the Browns gave Gabriel a shot.

Gabriel’s numbers haven’t been much better. He has the third-lowest passer rating (75.8) and the fourth-worst completion rate in October (59.4%). He has thrown for four touchdowns and has a pair of interceptions.

A different story has unfolded for Flacco since his move to Cincinnati on Oct. 7. In his first three starts with the Bengals, he has a 100.1 passer rating, a 64.3% completion rate, and has thrown for seven touchdowns with no interceptions.

The difference? Flacco now has two game-breaking receivers: Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase leads the league with 70 receptions and has at least 10 catches in all three games Flacco has started.

As for Cleveland’s receivers? Jerry Jeudy has a league-high eight dropped passes. Overall, the Browns are tied for second with 14 drops.

Those struggles were clear in last Sunday’s 32-13 loss to New England. Cleveland’s wide receivers had only two of the team’s 21 receptions. Jeudy had none on his two targets. Tight ends Harold Fannin Jr. and David Njoku combined for 10 catches, including both touchdowns. Three running backs accounted for the other nine.

The result is a nonexistent downfield passing attack. Gabriel is 1 for 8 on passes at least 20 yards from the line of scrimmage.

Rookie Quinshon Judkins has given the running game a spark with eight carries of at least 12 yards. However, because of Cleveland’s persistent passing struggles, teams have focused on stopping the second-round pick, who missed training camp and the first regular-season game due to an off-the-field matter.

No matter who has been under center, the Browns often fall behind the chains. Their 35.5% successful play rate — gaining at least 4 yards on first down, half the needed yards on second, and converting on third or fourth — is the worst in the league.

Cleveland’s 8.39 average yards to go on second down is the league’s second-highest. On 70.3% of those plays, they faced at least 7 yards — nearly 10% above league average.

As a result, the Browns have gone three-and-out on 25.6% of possessions, the league’s fourth-highest rate. Under Gabriel, that figure jumps to a league-leading 29.5%.

Stefanski — a two-time Coach of the Year — faces ongoing questions about turning play-calling duties over to first-year offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. So far, he has opted to stay the course.

The question for the Browns is whether switching to Sanders or Watson would actually spark improvement, or if the team must make more wholesale adjustments to its offense.

Sanders has the athleticism and was among the most accurate quarterbacks in the nation last year at Colorado with a 74% completion rate. The Browns must evaluate whether he is up to speed with play-calling and making changes on the fly.

“He’s working hard and really learning by the day, by the week. He’s doing a nice job of getting the most out of each and every day and feeling more comfortable with the system,” quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave said last week.

If Watson returns, he’d bring a veteran presence to the huddle, but he is 9-10 as Cleveland’s starter. He is also reviled by fans after the Browns sent three first-round picks to Houston for him in 2022 and then signed him to a massive contract that will go down as one of the worst in NFL history.

Whoever the Browns decide to go with, the offense will look different when they take the field on Nov. 9 against the New York Jets. Jeudy and many of the veteran starters on the offensive line could be on other rosters by Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

  • Patriots beat Browns 32-13

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel wanted to add energy in Gillette Stadium after watching his team lose two of its first three games at home to open the season.

    What You Need To Know

    • Drake Maye threw three second-half touchdown passes to help the Patriots erase an early deficit and roll to their fifth straight victory
    • Browns star edge rusher Myles Garrett finished with a franchise-record and career-high five sacks
    • The loss extended Cleveland’s road losing streak to 12 games

He did it by bringing back individual pregame introductions for the first time since 2001. It might have been exactly the boost New England needed.

Drake Maye threw three second-half touchdown passes to help the Patriots erase an early deficit and roll to their fifth straight victory, 32-13 over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

“The crib was rocking,” safety Jaylinn Hawkins said. “It was loud out there.”

Hawkins and linebacker Robert Spillane both added interceptions for New England (6-2), which has won six straight over Cleveland and 11 of the past 13 meetings since 1999.

Maye finished 18 of 24 for 282 yards and an interception. Hunter Henry, Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte all had TD catches.

“It’s really cool to really see a difference from last year,” Maye said of getting back to .500 at home. “It’s been a journey. They’ve been through it. The fans have been through it the last couple of years. So it’s just a credit to them.”

It came on a day where Browns star edge rusher Myles Garrett finished with a franchise-record and career-high five sacks, raising his season total to 10.

The loss extended Cleveland’s road losing streak to 12 games. The Browns (2-6) haven’t won away from home since Week 2 of last season against Jacksonville.

A week after earning his first victory as an NFL starter, Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel was 21 of 35 for 156 yards, with two touchdowns and the two picks.

“It starts with me. We’ve got to be better,” Gabriel said.

Coach Kevin Stefanski said Gabriel will remain the starter for now.

“With a young quarterback, you understand that there’s going to be ups and downs,” he said.

Cleveland hasn’t won in six trips to the Patriots’ current home since it opened in 2002 and now has an eight-game skid in Foxborough.

The Patriots took a 9-7 lead into halftime but had all kinds of trouble with Garrett early on.

Garrett dropped Maye for a third-and-goal sack on the Patriots’ opening drive of the game and forced them to settle for a field goal.

On the ensuing drive, Gabriel connected with Harold Fannin Jr. for an 18-yard touchdown pass, capping a six-play, 70-yard drive. The score was set up by a 31-yard run by receiver Malachi Corley.

It was the sixth time in eight games that a Patriots opponent has scored on its opening drive this season.

Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger had his first career INT early in the second quarter. But the Browns failed to get points out of it when Andre Szmyt’s 47-yard field-goal attempt missed wide left.

New England was threatening again and had third down on the Browns 7 when Garrett sacked Maye again, forcing the Patriots’ second field goal of the game.

Later, Garrett sacked Maye for the third time, stripping him of the ball with a minute to play in the half. The ball was recovered by left guard Jared Wilson, however, helping New England salvage a third field goal as time expired.

    Sack man

With his performance, Garrett became the third player in NFL history to have 10 or more sacks in eight consecutive seasons, joining Hall of Famers Reggie White (nine from 1985-93) and John Randle (nine from 1992-99). It is the third four-sack game in Browns history. Andra Davis also had four in a 2003 game against the Chiefs. The three-sack first half was the third of Garrett’s career.

    Trickery

The Patriots used a gadget play on their opening drive of the third quarter to set up their first touchdown.

With a first down on the Browns 38, Maye pitched to Rhamondre Stevenson, who threw it back to Maye. Maye tossed it ahead to receiver Mack Hollins for 19-yard gain.

Three plays later, Maye connected with Henry on a 7-yard TD pass as the Patriots extended their lead to 16-7.

    Injuries

Browns: CB Tyson Campbell jogged off the field after taking a hit to the head on a play in the third quarter, was evaluated for a concussion and did not return. RB Quinshon Judkins also left the game with a shoulder injury in the third quarter and was ruled out. S Rayshawn Jenkins left with a groin injury. LB Carson Schwesinger left with an ankle issue.

Patriots: DL Khyiris Tonga left in the second half with a knee injury and was ruled out.

    Up next

Browns: Have a bye next week. They visit the Jets on Nov. 9.

    Patriots: Host Atlanta next Sunday.

  • Jaguars and Browns trade starting cornerbacks, AP source says

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND —  Jacksonville and Cleveland swapped starting cornerbacks Wednesday night, with Tyson Campbell going to the Browns and Greg Newsome heading to the Jaguars, a person familiar with the trade said.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been formally announced. ESPN and NFL Network first reported the swap.

The teams also exchanged late-round draft picks in 2026, with Jacksonville getting a sixth-rounder from Cleveland and the Browns getting a seventh-rounder from the Jaguars.

Jacksonville signed Campbell to a four-year, $76.5 million extension last year that included $54.4 million guaranteed. But the second-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft never fit the team’s new defensive scheme and struggled in coverage with his back to the ball.

Newsome, the 26th overall pick in 2021, is in the final year of a contract that pays him $13.4 million.

It’s the latest trade for the Browns, who sent quarterback Joe Flacco to Cincinnati a day earlier.

  • Browns QB Dillon Gabriel confident for 1st NFL start, jokes dad needs a passport

    [ad_1]

WATFORD, England — Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel seems to take everything in stride, like not stressing about his parents being unable to attend his first NFL start.

They’re in his native Hawaii. The game is in London.

“So, fun fact — need to get my dad a passport,” Gabriel said Friday.

    What You Need To Know

    • It seems like Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel takes everything in stride, including not stressing about his parents being unable to attend his first NFL start
    • They’re in his native Hawaii, but the game is in London. And Gabriel joked that his father doesn’t yet have a passport
    • He was selected midweek as the starter for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, taking over from Joe Flacco with coach Kevin Stefanski hoping the 24-year-old quarterback can spark what’s been an anemic offense

Gabriel was selected midweek as the starter for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, taking over from Joe Flacco with coach Kevin Stefanski hoping the 24-year-old quarterback can spark what’s been an anemic offense.

During kickoff at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it will be 3:30 a.m. in Hawaii.

“I’ve always been used to it, when I was in Florida to Hawaii, a six-hour difference. Texting family is a little different,” said Gabriel, an “808” — Hawaii’s area code — tattoo visible on his right thigh as he spoke to local and international reporters at the team’s hotel north of London.

While traveling internationally for your first NFL start might seem daunting, Gabriel said “there’s comfort there” because he was reminded of long flights from Hawaii to various games.

The 5-foot-11 Gabriel will be the fifth different starting quarterback in 10 games, joining Jameis Winston, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Bailey Zappe and Flacco. Cleveland is ranked next-to-last in scoring, averaging 14 points per game. The team fell to 1-3 with a 34-10 loss to Detroit last week.

“Preparation allows you to be confident on game day,” said Gabriel, wearing slide sandals over white socks as he spoke. “I even had four weeks prior to this to master how we go through a week.”

Gabriel played in three systems in college — UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon — and was a Heisman Trophy finalist as he led Oregon to a Big Ten title.

“With Dillon, he’s unique and he’s very mature but also his college career was like no other in terms of experience,” Stefanski said. “He can lean on that experience in this situation.”

Stefanski reiterated that Flacco will be Gabriel’s backup Sunday ahead of Shedeur Sanders, the high-profile rookie who slipped to the fifth round in this year’s NFL draft.

Gabriel has played in two games this season — Week 2 at Baltimore and last week at Detroit — and has completed three of four passes for 19 yards and a touchdown.

    Garrett weighs-in on Gabriel, Wentz

Four-time All-Pro Myles Garrett participated in practice after having been limited earlier in the week with an ankle problem. He popped right up after slipping on the wet grass Friday in the rain.

He was asked questions about Sunday’s signal callers, and he noted Gabriel’s poise.

“He runs the offense like this is his offense. He comes out smile on his face, chest out, gives the call. It looks like he’s been doing for years, the way he manages the offense,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz will make his third start in relief of the injured J.J. McCarthy.

The veteran took six sacks in the 24-21 loss to Pittsburgh in Dublin last week as the Vikings dropped to 2-2.

“He holds onto the ball,” Garrett said. “He wants to make that big play. It’s not a bad thing. He does take sacks because he holds onto the ball.”

Wentz is crafty enough to avoid pressure, he added.

“We have to continue rushing, not assume that the play is over,” Garrett said. “He does have the legs to get out of some tackles and he will duck under a lot of guys who come in just flying through, so just have to contain him and be intelligent in how we rush.”

    Injury updates

Stefanski wasn’t definitive about the status of several players. He said “we’ll see” about cornerback Greg Newsome (hamstring). On offensive tackle Jack Conklin (elbow), he said: “I’m hopeful but we’ve got to get through the next few days.” Newly acquired tackle Cam Robinson is “coming along,” the coach added.

  • Browns offensive lineman Dawand Jones undergoes surgery on right knee

    [ad_1]

BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Dawand Jones has undergone right knee surgery, the team announced Friday.

    What You Need To Know

    • Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Dawand Jones has undergone right knee surgery

    • The Browns said Friday that Jones had a lateral collateral ligament tear in his right knee and a hamstring avulsion repaired. The surgery was performed Thursday by the team physician, Dr. James Voos

    • Jones was injured on the Browns’ fourth offensive play in last Sunday’s game against Green Bay when Packers safety Javon Bullard went low and hit his leg

Jones had a lateral collateral ligament tear in his right knee and a hamstring avulsion repaired. The surgery was performed Thursday by the team physician, Dr. James Voos.

Jones was injured on the Browns’ fourth offensive play last Sunday against Green Bay when Packers safety Javon Bullard went low and hit his leg.

Coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday the Browns have asked the NFL to review the play. The league’s officiating department said a penalty should have been called because Bullard went low outside of the tight end box.

“It shouldn’t happen, and I’m not saying that there was intent for that to happen. Our guys understand the rules,” Stefanski said. “In the old days, you’d have to defend yourself because guys could go low. I can picture Antoine Winfield, that was kind of his calling card on those plays, so you would be maybe more aware to protect yourself.”

The third-year left tackle will miss the rest of the season. It’s the third straight year an injury has ended Jones’ season early. He suffered a knee injury in Week 14 in 2023 and a broken fibula in Week 11 last year.

Cornelius Lucas is expected to be the left tackle when the Browns (1-2) play at Detroit on Sunday. Right tackle Jack Conklin is questionable with an elbow injury. If Conklin is inactive for the third straight game, KT Leveston would get the start.

  • Micah Parsons surpassed Myles Garrett in salary. Now, his Packers face Browns

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Micah Parsons told Myles Garrett he wasn’t just going to surpass Garrett’s $40-million-a-year average salary. In Parsons’ words, he was going to “beat the (expletive)” out of it.

    What You Need To Know

    • Micah Parsons made good on his pledge to surpass Myles Garrett’s $40 million average annual salary
    • Parsons is at $47 million a year after the Green Bay Packers got him in a trade with Dallas and gave him a new deal
    • Garrett and Parsons are two of the NFL’s top pass rushers, and Garrett says Parsons is “worth every dollar”
    • The two are friends and offseason workout partners, and they’ll face each other on Sunday when the Packers visit Garrett and the Cleveland Browns

Parsons ended up being a man of his word, signing a four-year deal with Green Bay that averages $47 million after being traded by the Dallas Cowboys.

On Sunday, two of the NFL’s top pass rushers will meet when Garrett’s Cleveland Browns host Parsons and the Packers.

“Holy (expletive), he did it! I think that was the same thing that went through most people’s minds,” Garrett said Friday about what went through his mind when news of Parsons’ trade and contract broke last month. “So that was part of the, I guess, the humorous part of the deal. Then him texting me talking about, ‘Did I do right?’ And I was like, ‘Nah, you did perfect.’ So I’m just glad to see him get what he’s earned and he’s worth every dollar. He’s shown that.”

Parsons got to watch Garrett set the market early in the offseason. Garrett demanded to be traded before repairing his relationship with the Browns.

Parsons had a different experience with the Cowboys.

“There was always a potential of me being back in this same spot, which I am now,” Garrett said. “I don’t think that’s what he wanted after no discussions with (owner) Jerry (Jones) and some of the other people, especially without his agent being present. I feel like that seemed like a show of disrespect, the way they were handling the situation, and I think the way ours was handled was a bit more respectful all around.”

Parsons and Garrett’s camaraderie was strengthened this offseason when they worked out together. Parsons said the workout sessions were heated and competitive, surpassing the ones he had while he was at Penn State.

Parsons also said Friday he wouldn’t argue with anyone who said Garrett was better.

“I would say he’s probably one of the better guys. If you argued Myles is better, I wouldn’t hesitate to probably say you’re right,” Parsons said. “But competing and understanding what he’s done for the game of football and how he’s came in and dominated but then also offering fellowship and mentorship, I think that’s what separates the good and the great, like just being a big brother, a big friend outside of football, You offering that, I think that just offers just an unbelievable amount of respect when you do that.”

Garrett has 106 sacks in nine seasons since he was the first overall pick by the Browns in the 2017 draft. Garrett, who turns 30 on Dec. 29, needs 2 1/2 sacks to surpass Reggie White for the most by a player before turning 30.

Since Parsons came into the league in 2021 as the 12th overall pick by Dallas, Garrett has an NFL-best 63 1/2 sacks, while Parsons is fifth with 54.

Both are off to great starts again this season.

Garrett has 3 1/2 sacks, tied for the league lead with New Orleans’ Carl Granderson. He’s also tied for fifth with five quarterback hits and tied for 11th with nine QB pressures.

Parsons has 1 1/2 sacks and is tied for fifth with 11 pressures despite being on a snap limit the first two games after he missed all of training camp.

“He’s a little bit shorter as a rusher, and that gives him the leverage angles that some guys just don’t have naturally, and he’s able to use that to his advantage,” Garrett said. “He’s just ferocious and relentless when he’s out there. He’s a fun rusher to watch.”

When asked if he might play the entire game this week, Parsons said he didn’t know. Green Bay faces Dallas next week in what could be an emotionally charged matchup.

“I mean training camp’s four weeks for a reason. It takes a while, but the training staff, we’ve been working out before and after every day so we’re slowly getting there,” Parsons said.

Garrett has sacked 45 quarterbacks, but this will be the first time he has faced the Packers with Jordan Love behind center.

Love has not been sacked this season, and the Packers are looking to go 3-0 for the first time since 2020.

Parsons’ QB sack list is at 23, but this will be the first time he goes against veteran Joe Flacco.

Flacco and the Browns’ offense have struggled as Cleveland has dropped its first two for the first time in eight years.

Garrett and Parsons have exchanged texts throughout the week — including Parsons asking for two tickets for family.

“I mean, that’s my brother on the other side of the field,” Garrett said. “But it doesn’t matter who it is or what the relationship is, that’s who I want to beat any time I step on the field regardless of the team or the person on the other side. And I know that’s his aspiration as well.”

  • Browns to unveil new helmet while honoring the ‘Dawg Pound’

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns are set to showcase a new, all-brown helmet for their matchup with the Green Bay Packers at Huntington Bank Field on Sunday.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Browns are showcasing a new, all-brown helmet
    • The helmet is in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the “Dawg Pound” fan section and the 1985 team
    • More than 80 former players are returning for the ceremony

The “Alpha Dawg” helmets come in celebration of the team’s 40th anniversary of its iconic fan section, the “Dawg Pound.”

This is the first time in franchise history that players will wear a brown helmet.

“The Dawg Pound is the heartbeat of our franchise,” said Haslam Sports Group Chief Marketing Officer Brent Rossi. “For 40 years, our fans have created an unmatched home-field advantage, and Dawg Pound XL is our way of celebrating their loyalty with unforgettable moments both on and off the field. We’re excited to highlight our fans through this initiative this Sunday while welcoming back our alumni and the team sporting the ‘Alpha Dawg’ for the first time this season.”

More than 80 former players are returning to Cleveland to honor the 1985 team that birthed the Dawg Pound monicker.

Players can be seen wearing the helmet in two other home games this season, Oct. 19 versus the Miami Dolphins and Dec. 7 versus the Tennessee Titans.

  • Ravens-Browns matchup brings Flacco back to Baltimore

    [ad_1]

BEREA, Ohio — Two seasons ago, Joe Flacco nearly made his return to Baltimore under pressure-packed circumstances. If the Cleveland Browns head beaten Houston in the first round of the playoffs, they’d have faced the Ravens next.

That didn’t happen, so Flacco and Ravens star Lamar Jackson had to settle for a reunion at NFL Honors, when the former won Comeback Player of the Year and the latter was MVP.

    What You Need To Know

    • This weekend, Jackson and the Ravens host Flacco and the Browns
    • Flacco spent the first 11 years of his career with Baltimore
    • The Browns (0-1) are looking to avoid their first 0-2 start in Kevin Stefanski’s six seasons as coach

“I was like, ‘Man, I thought we were going to have to see you in the playoffs,’” Jackson said. “He was on a roll. He had those guys in a good position.”

This weekend, Jackson and the Ravens host Flacco and the Browns. It’s the 40-year-old Flacco’s first chance to play at Baltimore since Jackson supplanted him as the Ravens’ starter in 2018. He did face Baltimore when he was with the Jets in 2022, but that game was in New Jersey.

“I got to play them a couple years ago but going back to Baltimore is definitely a little bit different story,” Flacco said. “It is somewhat surprising, honestly, because I‘ve been gone a decent amount of time so the fact that I haven’t had a chance to go back is a little surprising.”

Flacco spent the first 11 years of his career with Baltimore, leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl title during the 2012 season. After the Ravens took Jackson in the first round of the 2018 draft, Flacco made nine starts that season and then was traded to Denver.

“We all know kind of the story there and yeah, I have nothing but love for the people in that facility and the people in that city. I mean, for sure it’s one of those things in the NFL, there’s a business side of it and things happen,” Flacco said. “I’m fortunate to be where I am today and be in this position, but I have nothing but love for that city and for that organization. I mean I was a small-school guy that they took a little bit of a chance on early on in the draft and I have so many good memories with those people in that city and that stadium.”

    Coming off losses

The Browns (0-1) are looking to avoid their first 0-2 start in Kevin Stefanski’s six seasons as coach. The last three times the Browns lost their opener, they bounced back with a win in Week 2.

Baltimore started 0-2 last season but still went on to win the AFC North. But after losing at Buffalo in their opener, the Ravens could really use a win this week. Their next four games after this are against the Lions, Chiefs, Texans and Rams.

    Takeaway drought

The Browns allowed only 141 yards against Cincinnati last week, including only 7 in the second half. While the defense is doing a solid job stopping opponents, it isn’t forcing turnovers. Cleveland has gone three straight games dating to last season without a takeaway and has gone seven straight without forcing multiple turnovers.

“As good as we play, still more things that we could get better at and that’s one of the areas is takeaways,” cornerback Denzel Ward said. “So we played well, played decent on this past game, but we got to take that ball away.”

    Playing to their strengths

The Browns were in 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends) on 36 of their 71 offensive plays against Cincinnati last week, their highest usage since Week 16 in 2020.

That’s partly because of the selection of tight end Harold Fannin Jr. in the third round this year. Fannin was in for 55 plays while lining up at tight end, slot receiver, running back and even quarterback one play. David Njoku was in for 64 snaps. Fannin and Njoku combined for 10 of the Browns’ 31 receptions and 100 yards.

Baltimore allowed seven receptions to Buffalo’s tight ends for 97 yards and a touchdown. According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, opponents targeted tight ends 127 times against Baltimore last season, 10th-most in the league.

    Keep an eye on …

Both teams have rookie kickers who missed extra points last week, and the Ravens and Browns both lost by one point.

Baltimore’s Tyler Loop made both of his field goal attempts while Cleveland’s Andre Szmyt was 1 of 2, including a 35-yard attempt that went wide right late in the fourth quarter that would have given the Browns the lead.

    Injuries

Browns tackle Jack Conklin (eye, elbow) is expected to be back after he left the first half of Sunday’s game after being poked in the eye. Defensive tackle Mike Hall (knee) is on track to make his season debut after missing last week.

Ravens fullback Patrick Ricard (calf) and tight end Isaiah Likely (foot) missed last weekend’s game and missed practice time this week. Defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike (ankle) and cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) were also on the injury report this week.

  • Running back Quinshon Judkins agrees to rookie contract with Browns

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Running back Quinshon Judkins has agreed to his rookie contract with the Cleveland Browns but is not expected to be active for Sunday’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, a person close to the situation told The Associated Press.

    What You Need To Know

    • A person familiar with the situation said Quinshon Judkins has agreed to his rookie contract with the Cleveland Browns
    • He is not expected to be active for Sunday’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, though
    • He missed training camp because of a domestic violence accusation in Florida, but prosecutors declined to pursue a case against him on Aug. 14

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because the agreement has not been announced. Judkins is the last NFL draft pick who was unsigned.

Judkins was a second-round pick and the 36th overall selection in April’s draft. His four-year contract is worth $11.389 million and is fully guaranteed. He will have a two-week roster exemption, which is standard for draft picks who sign near the start of the season.

Judkins missed all of training camp after he was accused of domestic violence in Florida. Prosecutors declined to pursue a case against him on Aug. 14 following a state attorney’s office investigation that found inconsistencies in the accuser’s story.

The NFL has an ongoing investigation into Judkins for a possible violation of the league’s personal conduct policy; he could face a suspension.

Judkins began his career at Mississippi before transferring to Ohio State. He helped the Buckeyes win the national championship last season, finishing the year with 1,060 rushing yards and 16 total touchdowns (14 rushing, 2 receiving).

Despite the late signing, Judkins is expected to have a prominent role in Cleveland’s offense once he gets up to speed on the playbook. The Browns drafted Judkins and Dylan Sampson in the fourth round after they decided not to re-sign Nick Chubb.

Jerome Ford and Sampson are expected to be the Browns’ main running backs on Sunday.

  • Bengals hope for a rare fast start. They open on the road against the Browns

    [ad_1]

BEREA, Ohio — Joe Burrow and Zac Taylor spent the offseason talking about the importance of the Cincinnati Bengals getting off to a fast start.

They get a chance to back it up on Sunday.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Bengals have their season opener against the Browns on Sunday
    • Cincinnati is 1-5 in openers under Taylor, including losses in its last three. Cleveland went 3-14 last season
    • The Browns brought back quarterback Joe Flacco, who led them to the playoffs in 2023

The Bengals are 5 1/2-point favorites for their season opener at Cleveland. Last year, Cincinnati was a nine-point favorite at home against New England but lost 16-10.

Cincinnati began 0-3 and ended the season on a five-game winning streak to finish 9-8. The loss to the Patriots loomed large as the Bengals missed the playoffs by one game.

Cincinnati is 1-5 in openers under Taylor, including losses in its last three. It hasn’t started 2-0 since 2018.

“I feel comfortable with where we’re at. I’m not worried about what questions people do or don’t have about us. We just have to go out there and play well,” Taylor said.

It was a calm preseason for once for Burrow, who led the league last year with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdown passes. Wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins have long-term contracts. Chase was the fifth receiver since the merger to lead the league in receptions (127), receiving yards (1,708) and touchdowns (17).

“Obviously, there’s an emphasis on the start of this season and then having to win some of these games early, but that comes down to Sundays. Our prep has always been excellent in my opinion,” Burrow said.

Cleveland also has its own urgency after going 3-14 last season and dropping its last five games by an average of 16 points. The Browns brought back quarterback Joe Flacco, who went 4-1 as a starter and led them to a playoff berth two seasons ago. Flacco was with Indianapolis last season, when Deshaun Watson played in seven games for the Browns before suffering the first of two Achilles tendon injuries.

“We have to be about our business. You’re in the game week and you get to see these guys in the roles that they’ve earned,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “But for me, it never moves past very far the idea that these guys have worked so hard for this and the games, this is the fun part for them.”

Who is the real Joe Cool?

The Browns’ social media team posted “Joe Cool leading the way” when Flacco was named the starter on Aug. 18. That upset some Bengals fans, who have given Burrow the same nickname.

Flacco becomes the eighth quarterback to start in Week 1 at age 40 or older. He has a 3-1 mark when facing the Bengals in an opener, all when he played for Baltimore.

Burrow lost five of his first six starts against Cleveland, but led the Bengals to a season sweep last year in the “Battle of Ohio” for the first time since 2017.

    Golden’s debut

Cincinnati’s Al Golden is making his debut as an NFL defensive coordinator. He was the Bengals’ linebackers coach in 2020-21 before spending three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame for three seasons.

He’ll try to turn around a unit that ranked in the bottom fourth of the league in most categories last season. The Bengals lost four games in which the offense scored at least 30 points.

Golden had his entire starting defense practicing for the first time this week, including All-Pro defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who agreed to a reworked one-year contract. Hendrickson led the league with 17 1/2 sacks and 92 pressures last season.

“We spent time digging through film and trying to piece together situationally what can apply. But again, it’s really about our guys operating what we do at a high level,” Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said.

    Garrett’s status

Cleveland All-Pro pass rusher Myles Garrett missed Thursday’s practice with a hip injury. Garrett has sacked Burrow nine times, his most against any quarterback.

According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Cincinnati left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. has allowed Garrett to pressure the QB 13 times on 96 one-on-one pass rushes since 2018. Brown’s average allowed pressure rate in one-on-one situations is 8.0%.

    Keep an eye on…

Flacco on intermediate throws. When he was with the Browns in 2023 and Stefanski was calling the plays, Flacco threw 10-19 yards downfield on 26% of his attempts. The Bengals struggled against passes of 10 or more yards downfield last season, allowing a 53.4% completion rate.

  • 49ers spoil Trey Lance’s return with a 30-23 win over the Chargers

    [ad_1]

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Trey Lance’s return to the Bay Area led to three straight punts for the Los Angeles Chargers, who went on to lose 30-23 Saturday night to the San Francisco 49ers in the final exhibition game for both teams.

    What You Need To Know

    • Lance played his first game at Levi’s Stadium since the 49ers traded him to Dallas two summers ago
    • It was also a homecoming for Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, who had his first game here since he was let go following the 2014 season
    • After showing some flashes in his first three games this preseason, Lance wasn’t able to do much against a 49ers defense that had only a handful of starters
    • The Chargers finished the preseason with a 2-2 record and now focus on opening their season on Sept. 5 in Brazil against the Kansas City Chiefs

“It was fun,” Lance said. “I wish we could have got more going on offense and come out with a win. But it was fun. I tried to approach it like any other game.”

Curtis Robinson returned a interception of DJ Uiagalelei 32 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 6:06 remaining to give San Francisco the win.

Lance played his first game at Levi’s Stadium since the 49ers traded him to Dallas two summers ago. San Francisco traded three first-round picks to draft Lance third overall in 2021, but he started only four games before being shipped away after falling behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold on the 49ers’ depth chart.

“I’m a firm believer everything works out exactly how it’s supposed to,” Lance said. “It’s just how the plan was and that’s how it was written for me. I’m thankful for my time here in San Francisco.”

It was also a homecoming for Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, who had his first game here since he was let go following the 2014 season.

“Just tremendous memories,” Harbaugh said about his four years as 49ers coach. “Great times, great people.”

Lance is in his first season with the Chargers as he tries to earn the backup role behind Justin Herbert. After showing some flashes in his first three games this preseason, Lance wasn’t able to do much against a 49ers defense that had only a handful of starters.

He threw incomplete passes on third down to end the first two drives with a three-and-out punt. The Chargers drove into San Francisco territory on his final possession before a false start by David Sharpe on fourth-and-3 from the 38 led to a punt.

Lance finished 5 for 8 for 38 yards and finished the preseason with no turnovers. Harbaugh said he’s not ready to name a backup but likes the potential that Lance offers.

“Just 25 years old. Just in life, that’s the fat part of the bat,” Harbaugh said. “For a quarterback that’s the fat part of the bat. I like the skill set, an electric player.”

The final exhibition game provided little excitement as the teams combined for eight punts in the first quarter — something that hadn’t happened in any NFL game since 2017.

Luke Grimm muffed the eighth punt, setting up a touchdown for San Francisco when Tanner Mordecai threw a 22-yard TD pass to Demarcus Robinson. Robinson got some playing time because he is facing a likely three-game suspension to start the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Grimm muffed a second punt in the fourth quarter, setting up a 22-yard TD catch for Terique Owens, the son of Hall of Famer Terrell Owens.

    Moody misses

Niners kicker Jake Moody followed up his big performance last week at Las Vegas by missing an extra point in the second quarter, raising more questions about his dependability for the season.

Moody went 5 for 14 on attempts from at least 40 yards in the final nine games last season, leading to the decision by San Francisco to bring in Greg Joseph for competition.

But a string of injuries at other positions led to Joseph getting cut and Moody appeared to solidify his spot when he made five field goals last week, including a game-winner from 59 yards.

Moody made three extra points and a field goal in the second half, leading to loud cheers from the crowd.

“I thought he had one of the best games I’ve ever seen a guy have last week,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I know he missed an extra point today, which definitely doesn’t make us happy, but we’ll see how it goes in the year.”

    Injury updates

Undrafted rookie cornerback Jakob Robinson broke his forearm late in the game, ending his bid to make San Francisco’s roster to start the season. … Shanahan said that second-year WR Jacob Cowing will miss at least six weeks after re-injuring his hamstring last week. … Shanahan said he expects WR Jauan Jennings back before the opener. Jennings, who is seeking a new contract, has missed almost all of camp with a calf injury.

    Up next

The Chargers open the season on Sept. 5 in Brazil against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers visit Seattle in their opener on Sept. 7.
