  • Our Main Takeaways From How To Be Less Miserable By Lybi Ma

For a lot of us, there are seasons when we start to feel stuck and unsure how to move forward. Maybe your work routine becomes monotonous or your job search looks bleak. Maybe your relationship doesn’t feel fulfilling or your family keeps reopening old wounds. Whatever the case, many of us can become victims of our own negativity, trapped in a mind loop that keeps us in a state of stress and despair.

So we turn to TikTok and YouTube videos to see what can help us out of this rut. Or we’d read advice columns and self-help and self-improvement books like How to Be Less Miserable by Lybi Ma. This book reaffirms much of what we’ve learned so far on our path to becoming the best versions of ourselves.

We’re stepping out of our comfort zone today, and we hope you’ll come along on this journey with us. Here are some of our main takeaways from Lybi Ma’s How to Be Less Miserable!

Book Overview: How To Be Less Miserable

Summary: As human beings, we are all predisposed to a negative mindset. This tendency is a byproduct of the evolution of our species. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors had to stay vigilant at all times—what if a man-eating predator was lurking in their midst? It was more important to be aware of potential danger than to find food. It’s part of our genetic code, and we’ve carried this innate predisposition that something bad is about to happen to us into the twenty-first century. Even the most optimistic among us aren’t immune.

How to Be Less Miserable offers current research on the human brain’s tendency toward negative thinking, why we do it, why it’s so hard to stop doing it, and how we can use evidence-based methods to overcome the patterns that lead to anxiety, depression, and more. The author covers a wide range of topics, including:

    • healthy ways to pursue happiness
    • how to overcome stress and anxiety
    • tools for dealing with emotions
    • building resiliency and mental flexibility
    • the importance of social groups
    • the perils of social media
    • personal growth and the pursuit of passions
    • being kind and true to yourself

The strategies found in this book are based in large part on wisdom from the experts and researchers Lybi Ma has worked with throughout her career. They provide helpful and meaningful ways to manage and overcome negative thinking. Ultimately, How to Be Less Miserable is for anyone searching for a different way to think about emotional and mental health.

Understand That Failures & Mistakes Will Pass

You know when you go to bed and start replaying every single embarrassing moment or negative interaction that has ever happened to you? (Don’t @ us; we’ve been in the same boat.) This cycle will only continue as long as you let it happen. Instead, try to interrupt these thoughts as soon as you notice them. Accept that these failures and mistakes are bound to happen and that they’re meant to help you grow, not to make you cringe or beat yourself up about them daily.

Give Yourself Permission To Feel Good

We know; this seems like a no-brainer. But How to Be Less Miserable reminds us to allow ourselves to be happy. Rather than worrying about how long a happy moment or good feeling will last, let yourself enjoy it just because you can. It doesn’t have to be something earth-shattering like a picturesque proposal in the Swiss Alps. It can be feeling joy from reading one book or clearing out a junk drawer. Celebrate the small wins whenever you can. We promise it’s not a trap.

Stop Trying To Be In Control 24/7

We’re going to hold your hands when we say this. You can’t control every aspect of your life. Sorry! Life will not hesitate to throw your carefully planned schedule into disarray. What matters most is your ability to adapt to these unknown factors and manage your emotions. It will seem very scary to let go of your control at first. But once you accept that not everything will go the way you wanted or planned, then you can feel at peace. It may not be pleasant, but it will ultimately turn out okay.

Lybi Ma’s How to Be Less Miserable serves as a much-needed reminder for us to stop dwelling on the negativity and despairing over every mishap. Instead, we should allow ourselves to feel good and let go of things we can’t control.

How to Be Less Miserable by Lybi Ma goes on sale October 14th, and you can order a copy of it here!

  • Our 3 Favorite Things About Seeing Stars By Candice Jalili

Whew! It’s been a long time since we’ve felt this giddy about a new book, and we want to shout it so the world can hear. Candice Jalili’s new YA rom-com, Seeing Stars, needs to be your next read!

Seeing Stars is a spin-off story to Finding Famous, the first book in Candice Jalili’s Mashad Family series. It follows Mona Mashad, a reality TV star and the youngest daughter of the famous Mashad family. She reluctantly navigates a fake relationship with the President’s all-too-charming son, Lucas Sterling.

We got hooked as soon as an inkling of romance started to form between Mona and Lucas, and we hope you do too. Here are three of our favorite things about Seeing Stars by Candice Jalili!

    Seeing Stars by Candice Jalili

    Book Overview: Seeing Stars

Content warnings: mention of parent deaths, gun violence, panic attacks, vomiting

Summary: Mona Mashad grew up on camera, with millions of fans around the world tuning in to see her every move. Nothing was off-limits: not her first pimple, her first crush, and definitely not the death of her father, Mashad family patriarch and the best dad ever, Ali.

After more than a decade on screen, Mona has discovered the key to being the most famous teenager on the planet: never let your guard down and never give your heart away (because if it breaks, the whole world will know).

But she didn’t expect to meet Lucas Sterling, notorious heartthrob and only son of Jordana Sterling, the beloved President of the United States. Lucas sweeps Mona off her feet—he literally saves her when she falls down the stairs at the Met Gala—and for just one second Mona wants to let her walls come down. So, it hurts a lot when he betrays her, and even more when their moms demand they pretend to keep dating to appease their respective fan bases.

Normally, a fake relationship would be manageable for Mona. After all, she’s used to playing a part for the camera. But pretending to fall in love with Lucas when she’s still furious with him is no easy feat. And things get extra complicated when she meets Kai. A (hot) surfer and all-around normal guy. For the first time in her life, she can forget the cameras and just be…Mona. Could he be the escape from this fake reality that Mona needs? Or will fake dating America’s most eligible bachelor lead to real feelings?

    Flirty Banter & Romantic Tension

We, along with most people on BookTok, love to read banter between two characters. It’s the way into our hearts, and we immediately fell in love with Seeing Stars because of Lucas and Mona’s banter. We could feel the chemistry from their very first meeting. And even though Lucas has to make up for a lot during their fake relationship, he’s relentless in pursuing Mona. He’s also self-assured and effortlessly charming, and Mona held out on him a lot longer than we would’ve if we were her.

    Second-Lead Syndrome

As with any good love triangle, Seeing Stars gives us the ultimate second-lead syndrome. Kai, AKA Hot Surfer, is a respectful, down-to-earth guy that gives Mona a taste of a normal teenage life. He’s easy to talk to and so earnest. Their surfing lessons are so intimate and brimming with tension of what could happen if either of them admitted their budding feelings. We were so stuck between Kai and Lucas and rooted for them both at one point. Alas, this novel is not a “why choose?” story.

    The Confessionals

Another one of our favorite things about Seeing Stars is reading the filmed confessionals that are a staple to reality TV shows. These scenes take us out of the main story to get an in-depth look at each character’s reactions and thoughts on the events as we read about them. It adds a very meta layer to this novel. We especially love seeing Mona and Lucas’s differing opinions at various stages of their fake relationship. While Lucas was ready to be all in, Mona was still in denial.

From flirty banter and fake dating to falling for the first (and second) lead, Candice Jalili’s Seeing Stars might be one of our favorite books this year!

Seeing Stars by Candice Jalili comes out October 14th, and you can order a copy of it here!

  • 3 Things We Love About Legend Of The White Snake By Sher Lee

3 Things We Love About Legend Of The White Snake By Sher Lee

If there’s one genre THP can never get tired of, it’s YA fantasy! So today, we’re reviewing Sher Lee’s newest novel, Legend of the White Snake.

Legend of the White Snake by Sher Lee retells the Chinese legend of the same name, only it’s now an even more swoon-worthy, queer romance between two teenagers: a stubborn prince named Xian and a snake spirit named Zhen.

We literally finished reading Legend of the White Snake in one sitting, and it may just be one of our favorite fantasies this year. So here are three things we love about it!

Cover: Legend of the White Snake by Sher Lee

Book Overview: Legend Of The White Snake

Content Warnings: death, attempted murder, violence, corporal punishment and blood, torture, poisoning, corpses, hunting

Summary: When Prince Xian was a boy, a white snake bit his mother and condemned her to a slow, painful death. The only known cure is an elusive spirit pearl—or an antidote created from the rare white snake itself. Desperate and determined, Xian travels to the city of Changle, where an oracle predicted he would find and capture a white snake.

Seven years ago, Zhen, a white snake in the West Lake, consumed a coveted spirit pearl, which gave him special powers—including the ability to change into human form.

In Changle, Xian encounters an enigmatic but beautiful stable boy named Zhen. The two are immediately drawn to each other, but Zhen soon realizes that he is the white snake Xian is hunting. As their feelings grow deeper, will the truth about Zhen’s identity tear them apart?

    Elements Of Chinese Culture

In case you didn’t know, the Legend of the White Snake, also known as Madame White Snake, is one of China’s Four Great Folktales. It has been adapted into several movies, TV shows, and other media. And this retelling by Sher Lee gender-bends the female snake spirit from the original into a young man. We love the nods to Chinese culture, beliefs, and traditions throughout this novel. Recurring themes include the concept of yin and yang, filial piety, divine prophecies, proper temple etiquette, and so many others!

    The Pacing

We really loved the pacing of Sher Lee’s Legend of the White Snake because the story flows so smoothly. We were so glad that Xian’s identity as the prince did not become a misunderstanding at the beginning. Xian and Zhen also took their time developing their relationship rather than rushing into the instant attraction. We laughed then cried when their romance takes a turn once the truth became known. It was truly such a happy medium, and we couldn’t ask for more.

    They Fight For Their Love

One of the main things from Legend of the White Snake that we’ll keep in our hearts is that we need to work harder than any fate or destiny. Xian tells Zhen that destiny is for people who don’t fight for what they really want in life. (And we took that personally!) Xian and Zhen’s distant past complicates their blissful present. They fall into incredibly difficult positions because of duty. But they both sacrifice everything to be together in the end, even if it took a little longer than expected.

Sher Lee’s Legend of the White Snake blesses us with a well-paced, queer retelling of a famous Chinese folktale, and we thoroughly enjoyed this tale from start to finish.

Legend of the White Snake by Sher Lee will be available October 15th, and you can order a copy of it here!

  • Get Yourself An Order Of Love & Lattes By Beth Reekles!

Get Yourself An Order Of Love & Lattes By Beth Reekles!

We think everyone with an internet connection knows about Beth Reekles. You may know her from books like The Reunion and Love, Locked Down. And, of course, she’s the bestselling author of The Kissing Booth! Sound familiar yet?

Love & Lattes is Beth Reekles’ new YA rom-com, also known as Sincerely Yours, Anna Sherwood in the UK! It follows Annalise Sherwood, a college student about to start a prestigious summer internship in London. But things go awry when she unknowingly kisses the son of the company CEO only nights before she starts interning.

We’ve made Love & Lattes our latest obsession, and we don’t regret it! Here are three things we love about Love & Lattes by Beth Reekles.

Cover: Love & Lattes by Beth Reekles

    Book Overview: Love & Lattes

Content Warnings: deceased parent, mention of postpartum depression, divorce

Summary: Annalise Sherwood has worked herself to the bone to get a place in a prestigious internship program, and nothing will stop her now. Work hard, play later, that’s her motto. She figures one night letting her guard down won’t hurt, though – especially when it ends with the best kiss of her life.

But to Anna’s horror, she discovers that the mystery guy she kissed that night is none other than Lloyd, the company CEO’s son. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he’s everyone’s favorite guy and a total charmer, swanning around like he owns the place. And from the moment they meet again, he rubs Anna up the wrong way.

As the summer and the internship wane, Lloyd seems to be finding any excuse to annoy Anna, and she’s not afraid to return it to him. But when a lot of late-night work brings them unexpectedly closer, she wonders if there’s more to him than she initially thought.

    The Romance

We wouldn’t be writing a proper book review of Love & Lattes without highlighting Anna and Lloyd’s push-pull romance! An intern dating the boss’s son is already enough of a scandal on its own. But no matter how hard Anna tries, she keeps letting her guard down around Lloyd. And Lloyd somehow gets Anna to open up about secrets she’s never told anyone else. Everything would be easier for our main characters if they could be honest about their feelings, but there’d be no plot and no fighting for love!

    Lloyd’s Charm

Anna is so much stronger than us because we wouldn’t have been able to reject Lloyd as many times as she did in Love & Lattes. She has to put her career first, of course. Her professional reputation would be ruined if people started to think that she was using Lloyd to move up the corporate ladder. But Lloyd’s personality makes us fold every single time! He’s considerate, funny, and charismatic. He asks the right questions and wears his heart on his sleeve. Lloyd communicates so well and knows his self-worth. (Pop off, king!)

    The Supporting Cast

Finally, we love Love & Lattes for its supporting characters. The other interns in Anna’s cohort are the types of friends we need in our lives. They invite you everywhere even though you have a busy schedule. They look after everyone who’s been drinking, which happens almost every weekend. And when someone tries to blackmail you and blast your personal life for the office to see, they help you clean up the mess. Monty, Dylan, and Elaine are just the realest.

With a delightful will-they-won’t-they romance and a lovely supporting cast, we fell head over heels for Beth Reekles’ Love & Lattes!

Love & Lattes by Beth Reekles comes out on October 22nd, and you can preorder a copy of it today!

  • Why Heir By Sabaa Tahir Needs To Be Next On Your TBR!

Why Heir By Sabaa Tahir Needs To Be Next On Your TBR!

Buckle yourselves in for this one, folks! The iconic Sabaa Tahir is back with Heir, her latest fantasy novel and the first book in the Heir duology.

Set in the same world as Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember in the Ashes quartet, Heir takes place 20 years later. It follows the lives of three young characters: a vengeful orphan named Aiz, an outcast and tracker named Sirsha, and the Empire’s Crown Prince Quil. They struggle with power, love, and greed in an adventure that had us on the edge of our seats.

Sabaa Tahir takes our breath away yet again with Heir. Here are three reasons why you should read it as soon as possible!

    Cover: Heir by Sabaa Tahir

    Book Overview: Heir

Content Warnings: murder, death, parent death, child deaths, decapitation, warfare, graphic violence, torture (Read at your discretion!)

    Summary: An orphan.
    An outcast.
    A prince.
And a killer who will bring an empire to its knees.

Growing up in the Kegari slums, AIZ has seen her share of suffering. An old tragedy fuels her need for vengeance, but the love of her people propels her until one hotheaded mistake lands her in an inescapable prison, where the embers of her wrath ignite.

Banished from her people for an unforgivable crime, SIRSHA is a down-on-her-luck tracker who uses magic to trace her marks. Destitute, she agrees to hunt down a killer who has murdered children across the Martial Empire. All she has to do is carry out the job and get paid. But when a chance encounter leads to an unexpected attraction, Sirsha learns her mission might cost her far more than she’s willing to give up.

QUIL is the crown prince of the Empire and nephew of a venerated empress, but he’s loath to take the throne when his aunt steps down. As the son of a reviled emperor, he, better than anyone, understands that power corrupts. When a vicious new enemy threatens the survival of the Empire, Quil must ask himself if he can rise above his tragic lineage and be the heir his people need.

    It’s So Immersive

Maybe it’s because we both read Heir and listened to its audiobook, but we were locked in! This fantasy world is everything, from the physical and political landscape to each character’s dark history. Aiz sails across the Southern Ocean and back to rule her people in the name of Mother Div. Sirsha races across sea and land in the hopes of tracking a killer. Meanwhile, Quil is forced out of his palace in search of safety. We fully lost ourselves in this story and even had to reread the ending to cope.

    The Intersection Of Characters

With three alternating points of view, it can be difficult to keep track of the plot while learning the individual backstories. But Heir weaves everyone’s stories together so well. Not to mention those of the beloved characters from An Ember in the Ashes! There’s a point in the novel where we must stop and think, is this all happening simultaneously? (IYKYK) But once we figured out the twist, everything else came together. Aiz, Sirsha, and Quil all play their destined role in the final battle, and we’re interested in seeing the aftermath in the sequel.

    Of Course, The Romance

We couldn’t write this review without mentioning the romance between Sirsha and Quil! From their first chance encounter to bantering while traveling together, we absolutely loved seeing their chemistry develop. Because who else would get fake engaged and bonded to someone just to save her from her sister’s wrath? Soulmates, that’s who! Honestly, that is one of the most romantic moments we’ve ever seen in a romantasy, and we’re not afraid to admit it. Here’s hoping Sirsha and Quil get their happily ever after!

Sabaa Tahir reimagines a familiar world in Heir, a captivating tale with dark schemes, magic, and twists up until the final page!

Heir by Sabaa Tahir will be released on October 1st, and you can preorder a copy of it here!
