WE’VE SEEN A FEW SNOW SHOWERS AROUND TRUCKEE AND SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, BUT NOW THAT EVERYTHING IS WINDING DOWN, WE CAN FINALLY GET A LOOK AT JUST HOW MUCH RAIN AND SNOW WE’VE RECEIVED. AND FOR THAT, WE’RE GOING TO HEAD OVER TO METEOROLOGIST OPHELIA YOUNG WITH SOME OF THOSE TOTALS. OPHELIA. YEAH, KELLY, OUR FIRST MAJOR WIDESPREAD STORM OF THE SEASON. AND BOY, IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. BUT GETTING THOSE TOTALS WAS A LITTLE CHALLENGING BECAUSE THE STORM WAS SO EARLY AND A LOT OF THE SKI RESORTS WHERE TOTALS ARE COLLECTED ARE STILL CLOSED. ALSO, SOME OF THE SNOW MELTED INTO THE WARMER GROUND, BUT I DID DIG AROUND SOME OF THE SNOTEL SITES AND THIS IS WHAT THEY’RE REPORTING. MORE THAN A HALF FOOT AT ECHO PEAK AND PALISADES, BUT MORE THAN A FOOT IN MOUNT ROSE AND HEAVENLY AND EBBETTS PASS A FOOT AND A HALF. STILL, A FEW SHOWERS LINGERING SO THESE NUMBERS COULD GO UP. BUT I THINK IN THE VALLEY AND FOOTHILLS WE’RE DONE WITH WET WEATHER. SACRAMENTO DID THE BEST, CLOCKING MORE THAN AN INCH AND A HALF. STOCKTON ALSO ABOUT AN INCH AND A HALF NOW MODESTO MORE THAN AN INCH. THEY SET A NEW DAILY RECORD RAIN YESTERDAY, RAIN TOTAL. AND IN AUBURN, 0.48. YUBA CITY REGISTERING 0.88. NOW THESE ARE JUST TOTALS FROM A FEW LOCAL AIRPORTS. THE ENTIRE REGION GOT SOMETHING MEASURABLE AND NOW WE’RE GETTING READY FOR QUIETER AND NICER REST OF THE WEEK FOR THAT.     Northern California’s early October storm brought significant rainfall totals to the Valley.As of Wednesday morning, the Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto areas have benefited the most from the rain.Here’s a list of some rain totals from Monday through Wednesday at 6:30 a.m.:Sacramento: 1.58″Stockton: 1.47″Modesto: 1.11″Auburn: 0.48″Yuba City: 0.88″It’s very early in the water year, which began on Oct. 1. But already Sacramento is at 668% of the average, Stockton is 855% and Modesto is 700%. Sacramento passed the half-inch rainfall mark Monday evening. That made Monday the earliest that Executive Airport had reached that threshold during the water year since 2011. The first half inch of rain came on Oct. 10 that year. Aside from a pop-up storm south of Tahoe, the Sierra will be quiet, with highs in the upper 70s. There’s a slightly greater chance of storms in the Sierra this weekend as the region prepares for more unsettled weather next week. Meanwhile, temperatures will begin to drop–valley highs in the mid-80s on Saturday, then the mid-70s on Sunday. Our next significant weather system will arrive from the northwest with a sagging trough. Showers will reach the valley Monday evening and become widespread Tuesday, accompanied by increasing breezes. Valley highs will fall to the low 70s Tuesday, and showers are expected through Wednesday. Drier weather is forecast for the second half of next week, with valley highs rebounding to the upper 70s.

  • Viewer Videos: Did you see the light streaking across the Northern California night sky?

    Several KCRA 3 viewers shared video of the moment streaks of light were traveling across the sky just after nightfall Thursday.

    While officials have not confirmed what the light was, Meteorologist Dirk Verdoorn said it was most likely to be space debris, but could also be a meteor breaking up.

    From Garden Valley in El Dorado County to Stockton, viewers across the Northern California region shared video of the mysterious lights.

    KCRA 3 is reaching out to several agencies to determine the source of the lights.

    The Golden State Storm, Northern California’s newest professional women’s football team, is highlighting high school girls’ flag football to inspire the next generation of athletes.”This has opened the door for them to actually be able to show off their skill, their speed, their agility, and really just be rock stars out there,” said Nichelle Haynes, a parent.The Vanden Vikings girls’ flag football team, formed last year, is one of the teams benefiting from this initiative. Players have expressed excitement about the camaraderie and teamwork they experience.”It’s fun. There’s a lot of team chemistry. We’ve all been friends before we even got on the team. So like, if we play as a team, we’re going to win as a team,” said Makenna Holloway, a player for Vanden High School.Parents like Nichelle are thrilled about the opportunities now available for girls interested in flag football. “I mean, I’m super excited about all the opportunities that they have now for the girls playing flag football. So, I mean, it’s about time, right? Because so many women have always had an interest in football. We just never had an entryway,” said Haynes.The Storm is hosting its first-ever Golden State Showdown matchup, featuring Vanden and Rocklin high schools, to provide accessibility and showcase what the professional space can look like. The team aims to encourage players to continue the sport at the collegiate level and beyond.”This is more so for us to really just focus on providing accessibility and showing them what the professional space can look like. Obviously, the sport is growing at the collegiate level, so we want them to continue that in the collegiate level, and after that, there will be a professional space for them to play,” said Guppy Uppal, a team representative.Players and parents are hopeful for the future of the sport. “I want to go to college to do this and play professionally,” said Holloway.     FAIRFIELD, Calif. —

    The Golden State Storm, Northern California’s newest professional women’s football team, is highlighting high school girls’ flag football to inspire the next generation of athletes.

    “This has opened the door for them to actually be able to show off their skill, their speed, their agility, and really just be rock stars out there,” said Nichelle Haynes, a parent.

    The Vanden Vikings girls’ flag football team, formed last year, is one of the teams benefiting from this initiative. Players have expressed excitement about the camaraderie and teamwork they experience.

    “It’s fun. There’s a lot of team chemistry. We’ve all been friends before we even got on the team. So like, if we play as a team, we’re going to win as a team,” said Makenna Holloway, a player for Vanden High School.

    Parents like Nichelle are thrilled about the opportunities now available for girls interested in flag football.

    “I mean, I’m super excited about all the opportunities that they have now for the girls playing flag football. So, I mean, it’s about time, right? Because so many women have always had an interest in football. We just never had an entryway,” said Haynes.

    The Storm is hosting its first-ever Golden State Showdown matchup, featuring Vanden and Rocklin high schools, to provide accessibility and showcase what the professional space can look like. The team aims to encourage players to continue the sport at the collegiate level and beyond.

    “This is more so for us to really just focus on providing accessibility and showing them what the professional space can look like. Obviously, the sport is growing at the collegiate level, so we want them to continue that in the collegiate level, and after that, there will be a professional space for them to play,” said Guppy Uppal, a team representative.

    Players and parents are hopeful for the future of the sport.

    “I want to go to college to do this and play professionally,” said Holloway.

    Haynes added, “With this coming, this has opened up a lot of doors for a lot of girls who have never thought about competing on the next level when it comes to sports.”

  • Wildfire smoke threatens California vineyard impacted by 2020 blaze:

    The hot and dry weather in the West creates the perfect conditions for wildfires. One currently burning in central Oregon, the Flat Fire, is threatening nearly 4,000 homes — at least four have been destroyed, officials say. Another wildfire is threatening vineyards in Northern California.   

    The Pickett Fire, the largest wildfire in the San Francisco Bay Area this year, started on Thursday and has burned more than 10 square miles. Even if flames don’t reach the orchards, smoke will impact the economic lifeblood of Napa Valley.

    More than 2,000 people have been dispatched to fight the fires, according to Cal Fire. They have so far managed to keep homes and businesses from burning, but winery owner Chris Jambois says he’s concerned about how often wildfires appear to occur.

    “It’s obviously alarming to have to go through this so frequently,” Jambois told CBS News.

    He owns Black Sears Winery, where memories of the Glass Fire are still fresh. The 2020 wildfire destroyed several wineries and more than 1,500 structures in the area. 

    The Glass Fire covered more than 67,000 acres in Napa and Sonoma counties, about a two-hour drive north of San Francisco. The Pickett Fire, while smaller at nearly 7,000 acres, has taken a similar path.

    Jambois said he learned that even if vineyards are spared from the fire, smoke could still affect the grapes.

    “We lost two vintages — 2018 and 2020 — to smoke,” Jambois said, referring to the year the grapes were harvested. “Once we made it into wine, it was a bit of a disaster. We ended up having to dump it down the drain … I mean, it tasted like licking an ashtray.”

    Meanwhile, much of the western parts of the United States are enduring a relentless heat wave, which contributes to fire activity.

    The Flat Fire in Oregon’s Jefferson County was at 5% containment as of Monday, according to fire officials. It sparked on Thursday and has burned nearly 22,000 acres, Central Oregon Fire Info said. The wildfire is one of 55 large fires burning across the country, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

    A major concern in Napa Valley is how quickly the Pickett Fire grew. Jambois said he doesn’t know whether he or his business can keep up.

    “If we do end up losing this crop, it’ll be three out of the last eight years … We’ll have some serious soul searching to do,” he said.

    Meteorologist Tamara Berg said Monday’s forecast high for downtown Sacramento is 72 degrees, a slight increase from 69 degrees recorded Sunday. The average for this time of year is 70 degrees.

    Parts of 12 counties are expected to be part of the planned shutoffs as of Monday morning, including Butte, Plumas, Solano, Stanislaus and Yolo counties.

    WEEK WHICH I KNOW ON THURSDAY IS HALLOWEEN FOR A LOT OF OUR KIDDOS OUT THERE. AND THE ACTIVITIES THAT SURROUND IT. I’M GOING TO WALK YOU THROUGH WHAT I DO EXPECT IN TERMS OF ANY RAIN. AS WE GET INTO THIS WEEK, INCLUDING TODAY. THIS IS A LIVE LOOK OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW IN LAKE TAHOE, WHERE WE DO HAVE SOME CLOUD COVER. IT’S A BIT OF A BREEZE THERE ON THE SOUTH SHORE, AND IF YOU’RE WAKING UP AND JOINING US ON THE WEST SHORE, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THOSE ROAD CONDITIONS, BECAUSE SOME OF THOSE ROADS MAY BE A LITTLE BIT DAMP. RIGHT NOW, I’VE GOT A VIEW HERE OF SOUTH LAKE TAHOE LOOKING OUT TOWARDS THE WEST SHORE AGAIN, COVERED IN THE CLOUDS AND A COUPLE OF SHOWERS POPPING UP. AT THIS POINT IN THE MORNING WE’RE DOWN TO 38. IN SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, WAKING UP IN THE LOWER TO MID 50S IN STOCKTON AND MODESTO, AND 49 CURRENTLY IN LAKE TAHOE OR EXCUSE ME, SACRAMENTO IS WHERE WE’RE AT 49 DEGREES. HERE IS THE VIEW THOUGH, OF THE TAHOE BASIN AND YOU CAN SEE ALONG THE REALLY CREST OF THE SIERRA. WE’RE SEEING THE BEST OF THE ACTIVITY IN TERMS OF ANY RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS MIXING IN. BUT I HAVE ALSO BEEN SEEING SOME SHOWERS GETTING DOWN TO EVEN THE SURFACE STREETS THERE. AS YOU DRIVE AROUND THE TRUCKEE AND TAHOE BASIN. SO THERE IS GOING TO BE SOME WET TRACK. WE’RE JUST NOT SEEING ANY PLOWS OUT THERE RIGHT NOW TO PLOW ANY SNOW. WE’RE NOT EXPECTING ANY ACCUMULATIONS TODAY. SUN AND CLOUDS FOR THE DAY AHEAD, ESPECIALLY IN THE BACK HALF IN THE VALLEY WITH HIGHS GETTING INTO THE UPPER 60S. QUITE A CONTRAST TO THE WEEKEND AND HOW JUST MILD IT WAS OUTSIDE TO WARM EVEN YESTERDAY WE PUNCHED UP 80 DEGREES. TODAY THE HIGHS ARE IN THE 60S IN THE VALLEY FOOTHILLS FOR TODAY. UPPER 40S FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WE WILL SEE SUN AND CLOUDS MIXING IN A CHANCE FOR A FEW STRAY SHOWERS DEVELOPING THE AFTERNOON, BUT I WOULD NOT CANCEL ANY OUTDOOR PLANS. AS A RESULT, HIGHS IN THE UPPER 50S TO LOW 60S IN THE FOOTHILLS FOR THE SIERRA PLANNER TODAY. STARTING OUT WITH A FEW CLOUDS AROUND EARLY ON AND MAYBE A FEW BRIEF SHOWERS. BUT LATER IN THE DAY THERE’S A BETTER CHANCE, ESPECIALLY AS THE SUN GETS READY TO SET. WE COULD SEE MORE SHOWER ACTIVITY. LET’S WALK. YOU THROUGH THIS ALL WITH FUTURECAST. SO ALONG THE COAST HERE IN THE MORNING, ESPECIALLY AROUND LAKE COUNTY AND LAKEPORT TOWN, WE COULD SEE SOME SHOWERS THERE WHILE THE VALLEYS ENJOYING AMPLE SUNSHINE FOR THE START OF THE DAY. THOSE CLOUDS WILL THICKEN UP, ESPECIALLY AROUND 4 OR 5 6:00. THIS AFTERNOON. AND THAT’S WHERE I WOULDN’T RULE OUT A PASSING SHOWER TO THE VALLEY WHILE THE SIERRA STARTS TO SEE EVEN A COUPLE OF SNOWFLAKES DOWN THE WEST SLOPE LATER ON TODAY, AROUND 6000FT, ROUGHLY BY 9:00 THIS EVENING, A BETTER CHANCE WE SEE MORE SHOWERS BUILDING. BUT AGAIN, WE’RE NOT EXPECTING ANY ACCUMULATIONS IN TERMS OF SNOWFALL IN THE SIERRA. THE NORTH BREEZE ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE SYSTEM FIRES UP ON TUESDAY, 10 TO 15 MILE PER HOUR RANGE. STRONGEST ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE VALLEY. AND THEN HERE IS THURSDAY MORNING. WHILE WE MIGHT GET HIT WITH A COUPLE OF SHOWERS EARLY IN THE DAY, IT’S BY THURSDAY EVENING. WE’RE GOING TO KEEP AN EYE ON THIS SYSTEM AND THE TIMING THAT WE MAY EVEN SEE A COUPLE OF RAIN SHOWERS GET INTO THE VALLEY AT THIS POINT. WE’LL HAVE THE RAIN ICON ON THERE FOR HALLOWEEN EVENING. THE MOST OF THAT RAIN AT THIS POINT MAY TREND UNTIL LATER IN THE EVENING, AND THE

The average for this time of year is 74 degrees.Parts of the Foothills may see temperatures in the mid-to-upper 50s, while higher elevations such as South Lake Tahoe are likely to stay in the mid-to-upper 40s.Snow slicked roadways in the Sierra Monday afternoon as rain poured across Vacaville.
