  • Burbank Boys Volleyball Takes Village Christian Four Sets

    It was tense, it was tight and it was a fierce and exciting battle when Burbank High hosted Village Christian in a nonleague boys’ volleyball match.

    On Friday afternoon the Crusaders and Bulldogs divided the first two sets, but the visitors took the next two and earned a 25-14, 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 triumph.

    In the second set, Village Christian led 4-2 with a kill from junior outside hitter/middle blocker Danny Franco but a block from Burbank senior Farkhat Taishev evened it at 7-7.

    Burbank junior Michael Becker added a kill that leveled it at 12-12 and a push from Village Christian junior middle blocker Alex Franco tied it 14-14.

    A kill from Burbank junior Brandon Chong tied it at 16-16 and a tapper from Becker knotted it at 18-18.

    The Crusaders (1-1) forged in front 20-19 on a winner from senior outside hitter/opposite hitter Alex Garcia as the Bulldogs (0-2) called a time out.

    A kill from Village Christian junior outside hitter Alex Kazaryan made 22-21 in favor of the visitors but the Bulldogs took four of the next five points including a push from Burbank senior Caiden Kai Abarabar that sliced the Crusaders’ lead to 23-22.

    The Bulldogs powered in front 24-23 on Alex Franco’s hitting error and the set was capped on a hitting miscue by Kazaryan.

    Brandon Villaflor is Burbank’s head coach and even though the Bulldogs lost, he liked what he saw.

    “I’m proud of my team today despite the results,” he said. “We stayed aggressive with our offense as well as staying scrappy throughout the match.”

    Villaflor added: “I thought we did a good job of responding to their runs and their attacks,” he said. “We just couldn’t make a run ourselves at times.”

    During the final game it was deadlocked at 4-4 on a kill from Becker and a spike from Burbank senior Tyler Tran made it 7-7.

    Village Christian then went on a 6-2 run and led 13-9 on co-blocks from junior middle blocker Nicholas Vartanian and junior outside hitter/middle blocker Aaron Kim.

    When Alex Franco chimed in with a stuff, the Crusaders led 16-12 and Village Christian junior setter Walton Salazar tossed in a block for a 17-13 lead.

    Vartanian’s kill made it 20-16 but Burbank took five of the next six points and evened it at 21-21 on a kill from Chong.

    Village Christian led 23-21 on a block from Salazar as Burbank asked for time and the Crusaders won two of the next three points including a spike from Kazaryan for the set.

    The initial set was tied at 3-3 on a kill from Kazaryan and knotted at 7-7 on a winner from Taishev.

    Village Christian dashed ahead 14-9 on a tapper from Vartanian and 16-11 on a winner from Danny Franco which saw Burbank request another time out.

    Sophomore setter Sawyer Raub made it 19-11 in favor of the Crusaders and the advantage became 21-13 on a service winner from Kazaryan.

    Village Christian moved in front on back-to-back blocks from Alex Franco that made it 22-14 as Burbank needed another stoppage in play and by Danny Franco that made it 23-14. A push from Danny Franco sealed the game.

    The third set was deadlocked at 3-3 on a push from Becker but the Crusaders led 9-6 on a tapper from Danny Franco.

    It became 12-8 on a winner from Danny Franco and 16-13 on a kill from Kazaryan.

    A service ace from Kazaryan increased the cushion to 20-13 and Danny Franco’s stuff made it 22-15 as Burbank asked for another halt to the action.

    Danny Franco then added consecutive kills that made it 24-16 and 25-16 for the set.

  • Burroughs Boys Volleyball Sweeps Claremont

    One set was an absolute classic and the other two were very good and when the nonleague boys’ volleyball match was concluded, Burroughs took the nod over Claremont on Tuesday afternoon.

    The Bears’ 31-29, 25-17, 25-19 victory was set in motion behind the powerful hitting of outside hitter Ian Duffield, who had 16 kills and middle blocker Skyy Alston, who added six spikes with two aces and two blocks.

    Between the two, they were a lot to handle but they made their presence known from the very outset.

    Joel Brinton is the longtime Bears’ head coach and was also pleased that his club was challenged in that first game.

    “That first set was really good for us. We got to experience some adversity and then see us perform at a high level when we needed to,” he said. “You try to create those repetitions at practice but it’s impossible to. So, it was nice to get that experience.”

    Brinton added: “I’m proud of the team for ignoring some questionable calls and persevering and finding a way,” he stated.

    While the Bears took the match, it wasn’t an easy time as the Wolfpack battled at every turn to make it competitive.

    The initial set was knotted at 25-25 on a hitting error by outside hitter Gavin Etterbeek of the Bears (1-0).

    Burroughs pulled ahead 29-28 on Duffield’s kill and led 30-29 on a winner from middle blocker Jack Szaras.

    Duffield’s bullet sealed the first set and added a bit of relief, and it coincidentally also carried some momentum over to the next set.

    The first game began with Szaras adding a block to make it 4-4 and a push from Etterbeck made it 11-8 in favor of the hosts.

    A tapper from Alston increased the margin to 14-10 and it became 15-11 on a kill from Duffield.

    A winner from Alston made it 19-18 and Duffield’s tapper saw the Bears march ahead 22-20 as the Wolfpack (0-1) asked for a time out.

    When Duffield unloaded a spike the Bears led 23-22 but the Wolfpack rallied and led 24-23 on a kill from Anderson Van-Travis.

    Duffield’s push evened it at 24-24 and Etterbeck’s dagger made it 25-24 in favor of the Bears.

    The next set was deadlocked at 3-3 but the Bears pulled ahead 6-3 on a kill from opposite hitter/middle blocker Marco Santiago-Dorn (five kills).

    A tapper from setter Riley Brinton (26 assists) made it 14-11 and Brinton’s winner increased the margin to 16-13.

    Duffield contributed a push that made it 17-13 as another stoppage in play was requested by Claremont.

    Duffield wasn’t done as he added a kill to make it 18-13 and a service ace from Duffield saw the lead extended to 21-15.

    Duffield’s spike made it 23-16 and Santiago-Dorn’s rocket capped the game and a two sets to none lead.

    The Bears fell behind 5-1 in the third set on a mishit and trailed 8-3 on a kill from Cooper Longyear of the Wolfpack.

    Claremont led 11-7 on an ace from Alex Hoffmeister but then the Bears started to rally as they drew within 14-11 on a push from Brinton and it was tied at 14-14 on an ace from Alston.

    Duffield’s tapper tied it at 15-15 and a block from from Szaras made it 18-16 and a stuff from Etterbeek saw Burroughs pull ahead 19-16.

    Duffield’s push made it 23-18 and Santiago-Dorn’s spike concluded the set and match.

    Libero/defensive specialist Devon Romo contributed seven digs for the Bears.

  • Burbank Boys Basketball Wallops Upland 73-33

    Employing a smothering defense and a smoldering shooting display proved a perfect recipe for the Burbank High boys’ basketball team on Saturday night.

    Facing a good Upland team that had height and length but was short on shooting played into the hosts’ favor as the Bulldogs routed the Highlanders 73-33 in a nonleague game.

    Burbank scored 20 points or more in the second and third periods and nailed 19 of 28 shots for 67.8 percent in those two frames.

    Burbank drained 10 three-pointers with six treys coming in the second half.

    Three players scored in double figures and were paced by junior shooting guard Avo Papikyan with a game-high 20 points and was followed by senior point guard Cris Ong with 13 points and junior point guard Jon Ong with 12.

    Burbank sank 29 of 52 from the field for 55.2 percent during the game while holding Upland to 11 of 61 for 18 percent.

    The Bulldogs made 14 of 28 for 50 percent in the first half and led 36-17 and the Highlanders shot 25 percent after converting six of 24.

    Burbank dashed in front 16-9 after the first period and then were off to the races.

    Steve Eshleman is Burbank’s head coach and believes this was his team’s finest hour to date.

    “That might be our best offensive game that we have had all year and we shot the ball really well, but really what spurred us was our defensive strength that we had throughout the game,” he said.

    Eshleman also liked another important aspect of the game.

    “We rebounded and got the ball out and when we ran, and then created offense to our defense and getting the ball out and going tonight was probably our best 32 minutes that we put together and that’s great for the kids,” he stated.

    The Bulldogs (10-4) outrebounded Upland (8-9) 44-33 including 19-13 in the second half.

    Imani Smith-Young, a junior small forward, scored all of his seven points in the opening period.

    Papikyan tallied 12 points in the second quarter and that included three of his four from three-point range.

    Cris Ong, after scoring five points that included a trey in the opening frame, added six points in the second period as the Bulldogs converted eight of 14 for 57.1 percent from the floor.

    Ong’s basket with 5:15 remaining in the second period made it 22-9, Papikyan’s three-pointer increased the cushion to 25-9 with 4:52 on the clock and Ong’s bucket saw the Bulldogs pull ahead 29-9 with 3:25 left.

    Senior small forward Anthony Jawiche found his range in the third quarter with nine points and also drilled a three-pointer as Burbank dashed ahead 62-29 heading to the fourth period.

    Jon Ong dropped eight points in the same quarter, Papikyan added five points and Ong’s hoop with 6:35 left saw the Bulldogs march ahead 43-17.

    In the fourth period, Blake Finnigan, a senior wing, scored five of his seven points and added a three-pointer.

    Junior wing Jason Campos canned a three-pointer in the fourth quarter and senior small forward Giordan Lewis dropped two points in the second period for the Bulldogs.

    Senior wing Collin Heard paced the Highlanders with nine points and they all came on three-pointers and Cooper Omness, a senior wing for Upland scored five points.

    Assistant coach Tighe Eshelman is in agreement with his father’s assessment of the team.

    “We’ve been lacking a full 32-minute effort so far this year. We’ve had good wins by getting ahead of people and holding on for dear life,” he said. “Tonight, we really executed the game plan throughout four quarters, which is a great step for us leading back into [Pacific] League play.”

  • Burbank Girls Water Polo Struggles Against Mayfield

    For one half, the Burbank High girls’ water polo team put up a really good fight against visiting Mayfield High in a nonleague match at the Burroughs pool on Thursday evening with rain pouring down.

    From the intermission until the end of the match, the Cubs outscored the Bulldogs 11-3 and prevailed 17-7.

    Senior Melia Whalen was sensational for Mayfield (3-2) as she found the back of the net 11 times and delivered six goals in the second half.

    Freshman Jordan Ellis chipped in with three goals for the Cubs, who outshot the Bulldogs 33-22.

    Leading the offensive attack for Burbank (0-3), which went scoreless in the fourth quarter, was senior Melanie Hayrapetian with five tallies.

    Hayrapetian had a goal with 5:49 remaining in the first period that evened it at 1-1 and tossed in a goal with twenty-two seconds left in the same frame that tied it at 3-3.

    Hayrapetian’s goal with 5:04 left in the second period gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.

    Hayrapetian had back-to-back tallies in the third quarter that came with 5:40 left that evened it at 6-6 and at 4:55 for a 7-6 lead.

    Lina Tahmasian scored for the Bulldogs with 1:55 left in the first period that evened it at 2-2.

    Ellen Ghukasyan added a goal with 6:03 on the clock in the third frame that trimmed Mayfield’s lead to 6-5.

    Mariano Galvez is Burbank’s head coach and despite the loss, is hopeful for the future.

    “We made little mistakes, but they are easily fixable,” he said. “I think we may have been fatigued in the second half because they [Mayfield] were scoring so quickly.” 

    Whalen came out and scored three goals in the opening period as she drilled a shot with 6:08 for a 1-0 lead.

    With 5:41 on the clock, Whalen made it 2-1 and with 1:27 on the timer, Whalen found the back of the net for a 3-2 advantage.

    In the second period, Whalen added two more goals and they came with 4:50 left that tied it at 4-4 and her goal with fifty-seven seconds left made it 6-4 in favor of the Cubs.

    The third period saw Whalen tally two goals, and they were made with 4:44 left that tied it at 7-7 and 3:49 for an 8-7 lead.

    To begin the fourth period, Whalen struck for four straight goals and came with 6:43 remaining for a 10-7 lead, and with 6:13 left that made it 11-7, and at 5:35 for a 12-7 cushion and at 5:04 for a 13-7 advantage.

    A goal from Ellis with 4:26 left on the clock made it 14-7 and a tally from Ellis with 4:00 remaining left made it 15-7. Ellis found the back of the net with 1:00 on the ticker for a 17-7 lead.

    Senior Sofia Hesling, senior Camila De Cardenas and senior Gabby De Filippo each scored one goal for the Cubs.

  • Burroughs Girls Water Polo Has Easy Time Versus Flintridge Prep

    A relatively slow start turned into a rather quick ending for the Burroughs High girls’ water polo team in a nonleague match against visiting Flintridge Prep on a rainy and dreary Thursday afternoon.

    After falling behind 4-3 in the opening frame the Bears outscored the Wolves 14-4 over the final three frames and with that boost of energy eased into a 17-8 victory behind a match-high five goals from senior Derika Berenguer, who tallied three goals in the opening half.

    Right behind were senior Lauren Chaparro and Gwen Hager with three goals each for the Bears (1-1).

    Burroughs lost a close match versus host Notre Dame and fell 11-7 but Martin Ortega Jennison, the Burroughs head coach, liked what he saw and hoped it would have a carry-over effect which it likely did.

    “We played well against a really good team,” he said prior to Thursday’s match with the Wolves. “We only lost by four points.”

    Burroughs, which outshot Flintridge Prep, 36-17, led 9-5 at halftime and powered in front 14-7 after three frames.

    The Bears came out and scored the first three goals of the first period as senior Bonnie Kreztmann’s tally with 6:44 left in the first period made it 1-0, senior Chapparo’s bullet with 6:22 remaining made it 2-1 and Chapparo’s score with 5:11 increased the margin to 3-2.

    Following a similar pattern, Burroughs scored the first three goals of the second frame as Kretzmann’s goal with 6:38 remaining tied it at 4-4 before Chapparo’s tally with 5:42 left made it 5-4.

    Berenguer’s goal with 4:01 left on the clock made it 6-4 and Berenguer’s tally with 1:27 left made it 7-5. Hager added a goal with 1:05 on the ticker for an 8-5 cushion.

    Bella Matossian chimed in with a goal as eighteen seconds were left before intermission as the Bears enjoyed a four-goal advantage.

    Burroughs outscored the Wolves 5-2 in the third quarter and saw goals from Leah Hess with 6:05 left for a 10-5 lead, Hager’s tally with 4:51 remaining on the clock made it 11-6 in favor of the Bears.

    Berenguer’s shot with 3:55 left pushed it to a 12-6 lead and in short order Berenguer added a goal as 1:14 remained for a 13-7 lead. Hess accounted for a goal with thirty-one seconds left for a 14-7 lead.

    Burroughs scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter as Matossian’s tally with 6:32 made it 15-7 and Hager’s attempt increased the cushion to 16-7 as 5:41 remained. Kretzmann’s goal with 5:01 capped off the scoring for the Bears as the lead swelled to 17-7.

    Zoe Durry paced the Wolves (1-3) with three tallies and they came with 6:35 left in the initial frame that tied it at 1-1.

    Durry’s goal with 3:40 left in the same period handed Flintridge Prep a 4-3 lead and Durry’s tally with 5:47 remaining in the third period sliced the deficit to 10-6.

    Julieanne Kinne had two goals for the Wolves as she found the net with 5:34 left in the first period that leveled it at 2-2 and tacked on a goal with eleven seconds left in the match that sliced the lead to nine goals.

    Sarah Bank, Savannah Beattie and Sienna Beltz all scored one goal for the Wolves.

  • Burroughs Football Falls Behind Los Altos, Loses 52-7

    Only one possession late in the second quarter proved successful for the Burroughs High football team on Thursday night against host Los Altos.

    That clearly wasn’t enough as the Bears lost 52-7 for a third straight setback this season.

    Junior running back Sho Fujita had a seven-yard run with 47 seconds left that capped an 85-yard, nine-play march that sliced the lead to 45-7.

    Burroughs first-year coach Jose Calzadilla believes the season is salvageable.

    “This is another example of our young team learning hard lessons. The hope is this will benefit us as we start the [Pacific] League,” he said of his team that is 0-3. “Our offensive line is still not solidified because of injuries. We’re hoping to get that settled this week.”

    The Bears have also had trouble tackling in the open field for much of the early season and it’s hoped the problem will be solved.

    The Conquerors built a 24-0 advantage after the first quarter and led 45-7 at halftime.

    Burroughs’ first possession ended with a punt and was followed by a punt being blocked. Back-to-back punts were next, junior quarterback Brandon Chapparo tossed an interception and then the Bears scored a touchdown.

    Los Altos (3-0) employed a seven-play march that covered 56 yards and ended with a 17-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Diego Castillo, who accounted for four touchdowns, to senior wide receiver/defensive back Josiah Cortez that made it 7-0 as 9:49 remained.

    An onside kick was recovered by the Conquerors at the Bears 35. Four plays were needed to make it 14-0 as Castillo found Cortez on a 12-yard strike as 7:42 was left.

    The lead became 17-0 after a drive that began at the Los Altos 40 stalled at the Burroughs nine as senior Daniel Blas nailed a 25-yard field goal with 2:11 left in the initial frame.

    Los Altos blocked a punt that was turned into a three-yard burst from junior running back/linebacker Evan Rojas as 10 seconds was left in the opening quarter for a 24-0 lead.

    The Conquerors tacked on three touchdowns in the second period as Rojas added a five-yard run and 8:57 left that ended a 65-yard, five-play march for a 31-0 advantage.

    The margin ballooned to 38-0 on a 39-yard, seven-play trek when Castillo added an 11-yard scamper and 5:38 left before the intermission.

    About two minutes later, the lead became 45-0 on a 22-yard aerial from Castillo to senior wide receiver/defensive back Gavin Flores.

    Junior quarterback/linebacker Luke Rodriguez capped the evening by scoring on a 20-yard run that highlighted a 10-play, 59-yard march with 10:05 left in the game that made it a 45-point deficit.

    Next Friday at 7:00 p.m., Burroughs hosts Pasadena in the league opener at Memorial Field.

  • Burroughs Girls Flag Football Uses Second Half To Defeat Host Los Altos

    Thirty-one points were hung by the Burroughs High girls’ flag football team in the second half and proved the difference Thursday afternoon against host Los Altos in a nonleague game.

    The Bears held a 13-6 lead at the intermission and routed the Conquerors 44-20.

    Senior quarterback Karisma Mendez, who also toils at wide receiver and linebacker, delivered five scoring passes and three came in the second half.

    Keith Knoop is the Burroughs athletic director and the flag football head coach and was pleased his team played well.

    “What stood out for me was the second half,” he said. “We executed and competed.”

    The Conquerors took an early 6-0 on the second play of the game after a 71-yard pass from quarterback Jasmine Campos to wide receiver Sophie Sedano with 10:59 left in the first period.

    The pass was bobbled a few times before Sedano controlled it and the short toss was turned into a long score.

    Now it was Mendez’s turn to shine as the senior field general delivered a 33-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver/defensive back Lily Indefenzo on the seventh play of the march as 3:25 remained in the same frame.

    The one-point conversion run by Mendez was successful as the Bears (5-8) led 7-6.

    Early in the second quarter, Mendez unloaded a 25-yard toss to junior wide receiver Krystal Villalta, who also plays defensive back, for a 13-6 lead on the fifth play of the excursion.

    Burroughs scored on three possessions in the third frame as Mendez tossed a 16-yard throw to junior wide receiver Isabella Estrada with 8:40 left, capping the six-play drive.

    When Mendez hit Estrada, who also plays defensive back, for the one-point conversion pass, it made the score 20-6.

    Mendez sent her fourth scoring pass to junior center/linebacker R’ae Boulanger, who grabbed an 11-yard pass on the fourth play of the march and 4:50 left on the clock for a 26-6 advantage.

    The score became 32-13 on one play when Mendez nailed Estrada with a short pass but the junior raced 70 yards as 52 seconds remained in the period.

    Senior Alyssa Prachasaisoradej delivered two scores as the senior quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back had a 28-yard run and 11:16 left on the clock in the fourth period for a 38-13 lead and added a 64-yard dash with 3:05 left in the game for a 24-point lead.

    The Conquerors (1-8) sliced the Bears’ margin to 26-13 on the sixth play after a three-yard pass from Campos with 1:15 remaining in the third period.

    Makayla Salcedo added a seven-yard scoring jaunt with 4:20 on the clock in the fourth quarter that narrowed the margin to 38-20, highlighting the 10-play drive.

  • Burroughs Football Struggles Versus Santa Monica

    It’s only two games into the 2025 football season and for Burroughs High, so far, it’s been tough sledding.

    On Friday night in the home opener versus Santa Monica, the Bears managed a safety, a touchdown and an extra point as the hosts lost 35-9 in a nonleague game at Memorial Field.

    All of the Bears’ points came in the second half and there were a few bright spots along the way, and they included junior running back Sho Fujita, who carried the ball 23 times for 73 yards and junior quarterback Brandon Chapparo, who passed for 94 yards on 10 of 26.

    Junior running back Carson Shrode has been on the shelf but once he returns to action, Burroughs’ offense should be better because he adds a solid one-two punch.

    The first points of the season for the Bears came with 3:11 left in the third quarter as Santa Monica reserve signal-caller was tackled in the end zone. The score cut the lead to 32 points.

    After receiving the free kick, the Bears (0-2) took over at its 49-yard line and a 19-yard pass from Chapparo to Fujita put the ball at the Santa Monica 33.

    On second down and nine, Chapparo ran for 12 yards and four plays later, Chapparo hit sophomore wide receiver Deegan Howell on a seven-yard toss as 11:55 remained in the fourth quarter.

    The drive consumed nine plays and covered 51 yards and showed the team is capable of playing well.

    Keith Recchia is the Burroughs defensive coordinator and had some nice words for the players who helped the team score.

    “I like that our guys who subbed in fought hard,” he stated.

    Santa Monica senior quarterback Eliot Bingener (311 yards on 20 of 28 with one interception) threw four touchdown passes including three to senior wide receiver Payton Seals, who finished with a game-best 137 yards on a game-high nine receptions.

    The Vikings (2-1) came out and scored with 7:03 left in the first period as Bingener drilled Seals with an 18-yard toss that capped a six-play, 45-yard march for a 7-0 lead.

    Bingener also connected with Seals on a 55-yard strike that made it 21-0 as 7:13 remained before the intermission as Santa Monica went 94 yards on four plays.

    Bingener’s third scoring toss went to Seals and covered five yards as the Vikings led 28-0 as 11.8 seconds were left in the second period.

    The Vikings began the drive at their 33-yard line and used seven plays.

    The opening half saw Santa Monica, which defeated Kaimuki, which is located in Honolulu, Hawaii, 35-0 on the road but were shut out by Laguna Beach 42-0 had its way over much of the game.

    Bingener engineered a five-play, 65-yard excursion after finding sophomore wide receiver Myles Lee on a 45-yard rocket that made it 35-0 with 9:46 on the clock in the third period.

    Senior running back Isaiah Fernandez added a four-yard scoring jaunt for the Vikings as 10:47 was left in the second half as the visitors pulled ahead 14-0.

    After losing the season opener 49-0 at Hart, Burroughs looks to get in the win column next Thursday with a nonleague game at Los Altos.

  • Burbank’s Second Half Rally Knocks Off Westwood 41-27

    One week ago, Burbank High’s football team traveled to San Dimas and emerged with a lopsided victory, but there was just one problem.

    A few days later, it was revealed that an ineligible player had participated in the game for the Bulldogs and the win was forfeited.

    On Friday night at Kemp-Kallem Field on the Burbank campus, the Bulldogs used a 27-point second half to tally a convincing 41-27 nonleague triumph over Westwood, which is located in Mesa, Arizona.

    So for the record, this is the initial win of the season for Burbank (1-1).

    Junior quarterback Deshawn Laporte, two-way threat, tossed four touchdown passes with two going to senior wide receiver Exodus Freeman (game-best 152 receiving yards on six catches).

    Laporte also found Freeman with a 31-yard toss and 10:44 left in the fourth quarter for a 41-21 lead.

    “Me and my team executed with a lot of energy and came out with a big win,” said Laporte, who finished on 22 of 47 for 367 yards and had 10 yards on eight rushes.

    Hector Valencia is in his second stint as the Burbank head coach and was impressed.

    “I liked that the team rallied behind each other and about going for it on fourth down,” he said. “The defense looked over and said go for it. We got your back.”

    Valencia knows he has a team that can score points quickly and a defense that rallies to the football.

    “The defense caused some great turnovers with a few interceptions and fumble recoveries,” he said of the four turnovers by Westwood. 

    Valencia also had positive words for Laporte.

    “Deshawn was a little frustrated and being forced out but managed to still get out for some yards but the other team did a great job containing him,” he said.

    The Bulldogs (1-1) led 14-0 after the first quarter on a 10-yard strike from Laporte to senior Chase Miles (61 yards on five catches) with 5:55 and then unloaded a 31-yard bullet to Freeman with 1:53 left.

    The Warriors (0-1) then scored three straight touchdowns as junior running back Keshawn Barkus (154 rushing yards on 21 carries) cut the lead to 14-7 with 6:21 remaining in the second period and came within 14-13 on a 25-yard run by Barkus with 4:05 left.

    When Westwood senior quarterback Elliot Reed (12 of 37 for 125 yards and two interceptions) found senior tight end Preston Leavitt with a 12-yard toss and 38.6 second left before the intermission.

    Reed also drilled Leavitte with the two-point conversion pass for a 21-14 lead.

    Laporte evened the game at 21-21 with 9:19 left in the third period on a 41-yard bomb to sophomore wide receiver/cornerback/strong safety Tyler Hudson (108 yards on seven catches).

    Senior running back Thomas Adzhemyan added a six-yard scoring blast with 7:40 left in the third stanza for a 28-21 advantage.

    Senior wide receiver/cornerback Elijah Pendleton (46 yards on four receptions) added a 50-yard scoring run with 5:52 in the third quarter to make it 34-21.

    Reed’s six-yard scoring tally with 9:05 on the clock on the fourth frame sliced Burbank’s lead to 41-27.

    Senior wide receiver/cornerback Noah May-Vaughn and junior tight end/middle linebacker Aiden Dagher each had one interception for the Bulldogs.

    Burbank travels to Reno, Nevada to play a nonleague game next Friday versus Galena.

  • Burroughs Boys Water Polo Knocks Off South Pasadena 10-6

    No team wants to lose by an 11-goal margin, but that’s exactly what happened to the Burroughs High boys’ water polo team in its opening match of the season.

    So it was imperative that in their next match, the Bears play well and with purpose and intensity and that’s exactly what they did on Tuesday afternoon in a nonleague match versus visiting South Pasadena.

    Burroughs, despite being outshot 23-17, and also failing to score in the fourth quarter, knocked off South Pasadena 10-6.

    Behind Lincoln Morrow’s match-best four goals, including three in the second frame, the Bears have evened their record at 1-1.

    This match can lead to other bigger and better things for Burroughs, but only time will tell.

    Martin Ortega Jennison was pleased what he witnessed against the Tigers.

    “I liked that we pushed the pace when we needed to on the counterattack but didn’t force things,” he explained. “We remained patient and attacked where our advantages were.”

    Ortega Jennison also spoke glowingly about the Bears defense.

    “Defensively we did a great job with our press to force bad passes and allow us to drop back and steal possession away from them,” he said. “We still have a lot to work on, but our progression is on the up.”

    In the opener, Burroughs was defeated by host Polytechnic 15-4, but in time this could be long forgotten as long as the Bears continue to rely on solid defense and balanced scoring.

    Nicolas Oporta added three goals for the home team and three players each scored solo goals.

    For the most part, the match was cleanly played and saw the score deadlocked 3-3 after the first quarter.

    The match swung in favor of the Bears in the second period as they scored four goals while limiting the Tigers to a single tally.

    The scoring began with 6:12 left in the first quarter as Oporta nailed a point-blank shot for a 1-0 lead.

    With 4:41 remaining, Roan Kelly found the target on a 12-footer, and it became 2-1 in favor of Burroughs. Liam Wamester’s 10-foot throw and 4:01 left made it 3-2.

    The Tigers were led offensively by senior Sven Leu and junior Ethan Cheng with two goals each.

    South Pasadena (0-1) tied it at 1-1 on a 16-footer by Leu with 5:47 left and 2-2 by Cheng with 4:20 remaining on a 12-footer.

    Leu’s nine-footer with 3:39 on the clock in the first frame leveled it at 3-3.

    Morrow’s first goal in the second period came with 5:33 left on a 10-footer that evened it at 4-4.

    Morrow’s second tally occurred with 3:13 remaining on a 12-footer that made it 6-4 and his third goal was a 14-footer with one minute left for a 7-4 lead at halftime.

    Oporta added a point-blank tally with 5:01 left on the clock as the Bears pulled ahead 5-4.

    Oporta’s 15-footer and 6:38 left in the third stanza made it 8-4. Morrow contributed an eight-footer with 4:23 showing for a 9-5 edge and Rocco Quiroga launched a 25-footer with one second left that increased the cushion to 10-5.

    Cheng’s 10-foot toss and 5:33 left on the scoreboard cut the Bears’ advantage to 8-5. 

    South Pasadena sophomore Mateo Salas capped the scoring from nine feet out with thirty-six seconds remaining that sliced the Burroughs advantage to 10-6.

  • Burroughs Girls Volleyball Sweeps Past Visiting South Hills

    Everything seemingly went according to plan for the Burroughs High girls’ volleyball team in a nonleague match versus visiting South Hills.

    Backed by the overall play of senior outside hitter Sienna Lay, senior middle blocker Khloe Pavia, junior middle blocker Zoe Davis and sophomore outside hitter Amelia Walsh, the Bears thrashed the Huskies 25-11, 25-8, 25-18 on Monday afternoon.

    The last set was fairly close only because Edwin Real, the longtime Bears’ head coach, rested many of his starters.

    “When we serve and pass well, we look good,” he explained of the three-set sweep. “We’re able to run a fast offense when we pass well.”

    After losing the first match of the season to Chaminade across five sets, the Bears have recorded consecutive wins over Culver City, Crossroads and Marlborough all in four sets.

    The first game was tied early at 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7 but the Bears (4-1) took control 10-7 on a push from senior opposite hitter Leila Lazaar.

    When Savana Lay served an ace for a 12-7 advantage, the Huskies (3-1) asked for time out.

    Savana Lay’s ace made it 15-8 and Lazaar’s kill made it 17-8.

    An ace from Sienna Lay (who finished with a match-best 11 kills) extended the lead to 21-8.

    Another service winner by Sienna Lay made it 24-8 and a service miscue gave the opening set to the hosts.

    The second set was much easier for the Bears who led 5-1 on a hitting error by South Hills.

    A kill from Pavia (five kills) made it 9-2 as the Huskies requested a time out.

    When action resumed the advantage swelled to 13-4 on a winner from Sienna Lay.

    Back-to-back kills from Sienna Lay made it 17-5 and 18-5 and a service winner by Sienna Lay extended the advantage to 20-6.

    From this juncture, the Bears took five of the seven points including the set-clincher on sophomore middle blocker Alex Hammeke’s push to make it 25-8.

    The final game started off with the Bears taking a 3-0 lead on an ace from sophomore defensive specialist Kylee Beveridge.

    The Huskies rallied and knotted it at 5-5 on a kill from Jazelle Mendoza but a tapper from Savana Lay leveled it at 7-7.

    The Bears took control at this point and led 10-7 on a dagger from Sienna Lay. When Davis (five kills) added a service winner, Burroughs charged ahead 13-8 and then led 16-9 on an ace from Savana Lay.

    Senior opposite hitter Isabella Hanson added a push for the Bears to make it 19-13 and Walsh’s slam made it 19-14.

    Walsh (five kills) tossed in a winner that made it 22-16 and consecutive aces from Hanson saw the Bears dashed ahead 22-16 and 23-16.

    The set and match were sealed on a service mistake from Samantha Martinez.
