Phillies need 1 more win to clinch 1st NL East title since 2011

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Philadelphia Phillies are just one win away from clinching their first NL East title since 2011.

Aaron Nola is expected to be on the mound Monday night to start the three-game homestand vs. the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Park.

“Hopefully we get it done because that’ll be exciting,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Sunday night after the team’s 2-1 loss to the Mets.

Seeking their third World Series championship, the Phillies overtook Atlanta for the division lead on May 3 and haven’t trailed since.

Philadelphia (92-64) is on track for a first-round bye in the playoffs. It’s the third time the Phillies have reached the postseason three years in a row (1976-78 and 2007-11).

“Not everybody gets the chance to play for the World Series every year, so as much as maybe people in this room feel like this is where we should be, it’s still an accomplishment,” All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm said Friday night when the team officially clinched a playoff spot.

Philadelphia won five straight NL East titles from 2007-11, then went 10 years without making the playoffs. A wild-card entry each of the past two postseasons, the Phillies put together consecutive October runs that ended in heartbreak.

They reached the 2022 World Series, losing to Houston in six games, and dropped a seven-game NL Championship Series to Arizona last year after leading the underdog Diamondbacks 2-0 and 3-2.

Philadelphia’s only World Series championships came in 1980 and 2008.

I-80 standoff suspect who shot himself still alive at hospital in critical condition, CHP says

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (KGO) — The California Highway Patrol says the Interstate 80 standoff suspect who they believed had died from self-inflicted wounds Friday evening, is still alive in the hospital in critical condition.

The CHP previously told ABC7 News the suspect died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. However, they say emergency crews at the hospital were able to revive him.

Two left lanes of I-80 near Fairfield have reopened.

The three left lanes are still closed as officers continue to investigate.

It appears there is still a significant backup.

This is a breaking news update. Previous story follows.

After an hours-long standoff on I-80 near Fairfield following a chase spanning several Bay Area counties, the shooting suspect has died by suicide, the California Highway Patrol said Friday afternoon.

CHP says the incident started around 11 a.m. when the suspect driving in a silver Toyota sedan shot at someone along Highway 101 in Windsor.

That driver’s back window was shattered, but they weren’t hurt.

CHP officer David Derutte provides latest on the standoff on I-80 near Fairfield that started as a chase in the North Bay on Friday.

The pursuit began after CHP officers found the wanted driver, who they say was armed, parked at a Rohnert Park shopping center.

The pursuit wound through Sonoma, Marin, Contra Costa and Solano counties before it got to the Fairfield area.

Both directions of I-80 were shut down near the Cordelia Junction for hours during the standoff. All westbound lanes have since been reopened.

NFL Draft 2nd round updates: Philadelphia Eagles trade up to select CB Cooper DeJean

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The second round of the NFL Draft is underway Friday night.

The Philadelphia Eagles traded up to the No. 40 pick (from Commanders) to select Iowa CB Cooper DeJean.

Philadelphia sent picks 50, 53 and 161 to the Commanders in exchange for picks 40, 78 and 152.

DeJean broke his lower leg in November but has been cleared to return to football activities. He is one of the best ballhawks in this class and also one of the best punt returners available, having averaged 13.1 yards per return over the last two seasons.

On Thursday night in the first round, Philadelphia selected Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell with the No. 22 pick.

Mitchell ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the combine. The Eagles took a cornerback in the first round for the first time since 2002. The Eagles believe they have a shutdown cornerback who projects as an impact player with fellow cornerback Darius Slay in defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s scheme.

    Eagles’ top three needs

CB, OT, LB. The Eagles have to decide whether to bring back veteran corner James Bradberry, who had a rough 2023. Either way, they need a youth infusion. Darius Slay is 33, Bradberry is 30, and the secondary moved a beat too slow last season.

The Eagles need offensive line depth and have to start putting a succession plan in place for stalwart right tackle Lane Johnson.

Ideally, they’d find someone who can compete for the vacant right guard spot for this season and kick outside once Johnson retires — OT feels like a decent bet for Philly’s first-round pick.

Happening Today: 20,000 Oakland A’s fans expected to protest season opener tailgate-style

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — We’ll be watching how many fans are in the stands for the A’s home opener Thursday night.

Some fans are planning to protest by tailgating in the parking lot instead of watching from the stands as the team begins what could be its final season in Oakland.

You might recall fans planned a reverse boycott last season, deciding to pack a random weeknight game to show that the team should stay rooted in Oakland.

RELATED: Thousands of Oakland A’s fans expected to protest season opener

A’s fans are planning a “Summer of Boycott” protest tailgate at the Oakland Coliseum parking lot on Thursday.

This is the latest attempt to push back against owner John Fischer and his desire to move the team to Las Vegas.

“To show that there is support. There’s going to be 20,000 people strong in that parking lot. So it’s to send a message and send a statement: the fans are here. The fans organized this,” said Bryan Johansen, founder of Last Dive Bar.

The A’s recently announced the parking lot will open later than usual — just two hours before games.

Fans say they’re concerned that the change will lead to backups and are now asking the team to open earlier.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — A man charged of shooting an unarmed college student in San Jose nearly two years ago has been convicted and faces 22 years in prison, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office.

A jury convicted 68-year-old Mark Henry Waters, who is white, of assault with a deadly weapon and other allegations for shooting an unarmed Black man while he was crossing the street, DA Jeff Rosen said.

The shooting happened on Oct. 2, 2022 in the Berryessa neighborhood.

Law enforcement did investigate this as a potential hate crime.

The victim was visiting his friend at an Airbnb rental across the street from Waters’ home.

“While outside on his way to get some noodles and juice, he saw a stranger coming at him with a gun pointed at his chest. The victim ran and was shot,” the DA’s office wrote.

A San Jose man is being arraigned in the shooting of an unarmed Black man who was renting a nearby Airbnb, the Santa Clara County DA’s Office says.

Waters, a retired mechanical engineer, said in his testimony the semi-automatic gun went off accidentally.

In his statement to the court, the victim said that as the child of two athletes and running was a big part of his life, according the Rosen. “He can no longer run.”

“This man shot an innocent person on our streets for no sensible reason,” Rosen said. “A jury rightfully saw him as an extremely dangerous criminal. Now, respectfully, we hope the judge will agree.”

  • Iconic SF Union Square Macy’s to close amid mass shuttering of locations, supervisor says

Iconic SF Union Square Macy’s to close amid mass shuttering of locations, supervisor says

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Macy’s will close its San Francisco Union Square location, according to Supervisor Aaron Peskin, as the company announces the closure of more than 150 stores.

Peskin says the flagship store will stay open until they sell the property. In a statement, business management group the Union Square Alliance says that the location “could still be open for years to come,” and “in all likelihood, there will be a Holiday shopping season and Macy’s great tree in 2024.”

RELATED: Macy’s to close 150 stores as sales slip as it pivots to luxury at Bloomingdale’s and Blue Mercury

On Tuesday, Macy’s said the 150 stores would close over the next three years, 50 of which will be closed by the end of 2024.

At least 400 employees at the Union Square Location are impacted, according to the UFCW Local 5, which represents workers there.

“We’ve seen this past holiday season and the end of the year, between November 20 and end of the year, we’ve seen a significant decline in crime,” Mayor Breed told ABC7. “We know this has nothing to do with that decision, this is part of a larger decision that Macy’s has made,” she said.

Macy’s says the closures are due to sluggish sales and they’re hoping to fend off a pending takeover bid.

The company plans to open more small versions of Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores, which are owned by Macy’s.

VIDEO: San Francisco stores that are now gone

San Francisco has been home to many prominent stores that no longer exist. From the Emporium to The White House, take a look back with us.

It is not clear if any other Bay Area Macy’s stores are on the list of closures.

This is the latest in a list of iconic Union Square and downtown retail stores to close, including Nordstroms and the Westfield Mall.

MAP: Macy’s, Nordstrom among notable SF Union Square area store closures

San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement

“Macy’s has decided to close 150 stores nationwide over the next few years, and sell property, including closing 50 stores this year. While San Francisco’s Macy’s is not part of this first wave of 50 closures, I’ve been informed that Macy’s is looking to sell their Union Square property. The process to undergo the sale of their building to a new owner with their own vision for this site will take time, and Macy’s will stay open for the foreseeable future and people will remain employed at the store. Macy’s has expressed to me their commitment to remaining a part of Union Square and our City while they undergo this transition.

The City will continue to work closely with Macy’s and any potential new owner to ensure this iconic location continues to serve San Francisco for decades to come. I’m also continuing to talk to leaders in retail, business, and real estate about how we can continue to focus on the long-term success of this site and others. There is tremendous opportunity at this site, and I know this City will continue to draw new investments and ideas. I appreciate Macy’s partnership and their commitment to working with us.

That being said, as someone who grew up in San Francisco, Macy’s has always meant a lot to the people of this city. It’s where families came to shop for the holidays. It’s where many people from my community got their first jobs, or even held jobs for decades. It’s hard to think of Macy’s not being part of our city anymore.

Change is happening in San Francisco, and that change can be positive if we channel it to the benefit of San Franciscans. This is why it’s so important we continue to make law changes at local and state levels, and that we reform our tax laws to recruit and retain businesses. It’s why we need to provide incentives for residential conversion, like my transfer tax measure. It’s why we keep recruiting new types of businesses, making it easier to open and operate small businesses, and working to bring more arts and entertainment to Downtown. It’s why we are pursuing big, transformative ideas like bringing new universities to our City. We will keep our focus on moving this City forward and creating opportunities for growth.”

Macy’s CEO Tony Spring released a statement writing

“A Bold New Chapter serves as a strong call to action. It challenges the status quo to create a more modern Macy’s, Inc. We are making the necessary moves to reinvigorate relationships with our customers through improved shopping experiences, relevant assortments and compelling value,” said Tony Spring, chief executive officer, Macy’s, Inc. “Our teams are energized by the work ahead as we accelerate our path to market share gains, sustainable, profitable growth and value creation for our shareholders.”

This is the full statement from Union Square Alliance CEO Marisa Rodriguez

“Macy’s at Union Square is not closing their store until a buyer can be found for their building. Macy’s will remain open and could still be open for years to come. In all likelihood, there will be a Holiday shopping season and Macy’s great tree in 2024. Having said that, the situation is fluid and there is no getting around the fact that this announcement hurts. For generations, Macy’s has been synonymous with Union Square. I believe that we should work toward a solution that allows Macy’s to keep this iconic store open. However, if that does not come to pass, our expectation is that a new owner for this iconic site will come forward to continue a fresh and vibrant vision at this critical location. Macy’s has long been a strong partner for the Union Square Alliance, and the Alliance will be here for Macy’s during this challenging period.”

Jim Araby, the Strategic Campaigns Director at UFCW Local 5

“They got the word of the Union Square store closure this morning. It will impact about 400 workers at Macy’s Union Square. They have not gotten any word that the store in Pleasanton will be closed. The union says they are working with the city to help Macy’s workers to transition to other jobs. And the union says that if Macy’s opens up other smaller stores in the city, it will work with Macy’s to get workers jobs at those new stores.”

Aaron Peskin – SF Board of Supervisors President

“I was devastated by this morning’s phone call from Macy’s corporate leadership confirming their national plan to downsize by 150 locations, including the Union Square location, and invest in a small-format model,” said Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin. “Macy’s was one of the last holdouts against the national trend of retail closures and consolidations, but as with every seeming blow to our downtown recovery, I see a potential opportunity. This site is an opportunity development site, with potential for mixed-use, food & beverage and residential on the upper floors, even before the pandemic. Macy’s has confirmed that the building will remain open until the end of the year, and it will be put up for sale.’”

2 East Bay Catholic schools closing; one closure due to ‘rising crime, human trafficking’

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — Two East Bay private Catholic schools are closing at the end of the school year, the Oakland Diocese confirmed to the I-Team. One of the closures is due to a rise in crime, including human trafficking operations near the campus.

Parents at “St. Anthony Catholic School” received notice two weeks ago, according to an email sent from the Oakland Diocese. Aside from crime, the notice says the closure is tied to homelessness, unemployment, lack of affordable housing, as well as human trafficking operations near the school.

Enrollment at the K-8 grade school declined to 65 students.

The I-Team first broke the story about human trafficking operations in this area one year ago – where video shows young girls and alleged pimps surrounding the campus. It prompted action from the FBI to put up cameras in the area and install traffic barricades near the school campus.

Video showing alleged sex workers soliciting right outside St. Anthony’s in East Oakland is raising concerns about human trafficking in the area.

The Oakland Diocese says the St. Anthony school community is facing “overwhelming financial challenges,” despite large investments.

A former school parent, Rosa Vargas, says families are worried about finding a safe alternative for their kids.

Oakland officials say city will enhance patrols and install new cameras after I-Team’s report revealed possible human trafficking outside a school.

“It’s really hard to get into good schools, it’s really hard,” Vargas said. “And for us parents that are paying to get our kids in a safe school… it’s hard because if we take our children to another school…. we’re told they’re not at grade level.”

The Oakland Diocese told ABC7 News “Our Lady of Guadalupe” in Fremont is also closing. It’s unclear what’s prompting that closure. The ABC7 News I-Team has reached out for more information, but we are still waiting to hear back.
