NLEX continues to support the growth of its host communities as it recently kicked off the 2024 Pag-unlad at Paglago ng Pamayanan (PUNLA), the company’s capacity-building program for women-led small businesses.

“Ang Pag-unlad at Paglago ng Pamayanan, o PUNLA is one of our flagship community development initiatives aimed to equip organizations with the necessary knowledge and skills to help improve their enterprise,” said NLEX Corporation vice president for Communication and Stakeholder Management Donna F. Marcelo.

NLEX  partnered with Philippine Support Service Agencies (PHILSSA), a social development organization that focuses on community development, to train the 60 participants from pre-qualified 12 enterprises in a 4-session training that will last until May. The 12  enterprises from NLEX and SCTEX host communities are Barangay 171 Bagumbong Person with Disability Association, Inc., Samahan ng mga Taong may Kapansanan sa Bataan (SATAMAKABA), Asosasyon ng Magbabayong sa Atis Potrero, Samahan ng Kababaihang Mananahi ng Tibag, Inc., Tabon San Jose Farmers Association, Inc., Vizal Sto. Nino Rice and Livestock Farmers Association, Balanga Agrarian Reform Beneficiary MPC (BARB-MPC), Sining Kahoy Association of Bagac, Makabakle, Kadenang Kristal at Marimar Community (MAKAMAL), Concepcion Calamansi Growers & Rice Producers, CAT – Employees Dependents Producers Cooperative, Makabagong Agrikultura ng Dinalupihan Marketing Cooperative (MA-DMC).

To further empower the enterprises and propel their growth, the top 5 businesses based on the set criteria will receive grants for the implementation of their enhancement plans and will undergo coaching and mentoring sessions with PHILSSA from June to August.

A reassessment will be conducted on the top 5 enterprises, leading to the selection of the grand enterprise at the end of the 8-month program. Additional grants will be provided to further facilitate business development.

“Isang malaking karangalan ang mapabilang sa programang PUNLA. Naging daan ito para maging mas matatag ang samahan sa aming kooperatiba. Nagbigay din ng lakas ng loob ito sa aming mga miyembro dahil nakita naming may bukas palad palang organisasyon na handang umalalay sa aming munting negosyo upang mas mapalawig ito,” said CAT- Employees Dependents Producers Cooperative chairman, Teresita A. Dizon.

Aside from PUNLA, NLEX also has other women-centric programs lined up this year such as Basketboys Clinic for Girls and Barangay emergency responders training as the company recognizes the vital role that empowered women play in driving socio-economic development.

In addition to women empowerment initiatives, NLEX also pledges its continuing commitment to conduct programs on community development, environmental conservation, road safety awareness, and youth education, all aim to make a positive impact and help uplift the quality of life of every Filipino.

  • NLEX launches ‘Ang Bida ng Kalsada’ child road safety picture book

NLEX launches ‘Ang Bida ng Kalsada’ child road safety picture book

    [ad_1]

In its mission to promote road safety awareness and prevent road-related incidents, NLEX Corporation launched a picture book at the National Library of the Philippines entitled “Ang Bida ng Kalsada” to educate kids on the importance of responsible road usage through a creative story and illustrations.

“The ‘Ang Bida ng Kalsada Picture Book’ is our modest contribution and response to UNICEF’s call to action to protect our children who use the road as pedestrians, as passengers, and as responsible members of the community. The story of Danny and Dexter, the main characters in the book, is rich with invaluable road safety lessons that children can easily connect with,” said NLEX Corporation president and general manager, J. Luigi L. Bautista

This full-colored book written in Filipino and English helps children appreciate road safety by understanding the context behind different traffic rules and regulations in a story covering a child’s journey from the house. The book will be distributed to Grades 3-6 public school students in 20 schools within NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector’s host communities.

Director Marilyn Siao of DepEd’s Bureau of Learning and Delivery extended her gratitude towards NLEX, as the book not only teaches safe road practices but also good values.

“In the pages of this beautifully illustrated book that we launched today, children embarked on a journey filled with important lessons about being responsible pedestrians, about being conscientious passengers, and active members of the community. Through captivating storytelling and vibrant imagery, they not only learn the rules of the road, but also embrace values of caution, obedience, compassion, and cooperation,” she said.

In November 2021, the Metro Pacific Tollway Corporation, the mother company of NLEX Corporation, entered a multi-year agreement with UNICEF, pledging support for its Child Road Safety Program under the United Nations’ Second Decade of Action for Road Safety. Under the partnership, NLEX has committed to assisting 100 schools in identified high-risk areas.

“It is our hope that initiatives like these will contribute to the reduction of road accidents. As parents who trust our children to venture beyond the safety of our homes, and as teachers who bid farewell to students at day’s end, we hold onto the hope of seeing our children become responsible road users. We also hope this picture book can bring about positive change in the lives of children, parents, and teachers alike,” said Bautista.

‘Ang Bida ng Kalsada’ is just one of NLEX’s efforts to contribute to UNICEF’s goal to reduce road traffic fatalities by fifty percent (50%) by the year 2030. Dr. Angel Umali, UNICEF Philippines’s Health and Nutrition Officer thanked NLEX for its commitment to the advocacy and urged the tollway company to continue its efforts in organizing and implementing programs that will enhance children’s welfare.

“Sa lahat ng ating mga proyekto at gawain, kailangan nating tignan ang kapakanan ng mga kabataan sapagkat kapag ginawa nating ligtas ang ating mga kalsada para sa mga bata, ito ay ligtas na rin para sa lahat,” Dr. Umali said.

Prior to the agreement with UNICEF, NLEX has already been at the forefront of promoting road safety through various initiatives like Kaligtasan sa Daan (KalSaDa), Biyahero Road Safety Caravan, and Usapang Drayber. All of these aim to instill the value of road safety and responsible road usage.

Aside from these road safety awareness initiatives, NLEX recently established a Road Traffic Safety Hub and Park in Mabalacat, Pampanga. The said park facility provides an educational avenue for its stakeholders, including children, to be exposed to and educated on safe road practices.

With the success of the opening of the RTS Hub and park and the recent launch of the ‘Ang Bida ng Kalsada’ child road safety picture book, NLEX pledges to continuously work with different organizations and government agencies in initiating programs that will benefit young road users.

  • NLEX gears up for Holy Week surge

NLEX gears up for Holy Week surge

    [ad_1]

NLEX Corporation will be on full alert from March 22 to April 1 to manage the anticipated 10% increase in traffic volume during the Holy Week.

With 1,500 traffic, toll, and system personnel in full force, NLEX will reactivate the “Safe Trip Mo, Sagot Ko” (SMSK) motorist assistance program to ensure that motorists are assisted as they head to the provinces during Holy Week. At the same time, motorists going north via NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector are advised to avoid traveling during peak hours for a more convenient expressway experience.

“We are encouraging our motorists to plan their trips well and travel during non-peak times to avoid possible delays caused by the influx of travelers,” said J. Luigi L. Bautista, NLEX Corporation president and general manager.

The surge of travelers heading north is anticipated starting at 10 am on March 27 until 2 pm on March 28. For Manila-bound vehicles, high volume traffic is expected from 4 pm to 11 pm on March 30 and from 2 pm on March 31 to 8 am on April 1.

To manage traffic effectively, NLEX will deploy additional personnel in high-volume areas of its expressways including the rest and refuel stations. Incident response teams, tow trucks, and fire trucks will also be strategically stationed for prompt deployment. Moreover, additional traffic signage will be installed to better guide its motorists.

For the duration of the SMSK, road works and lane closures along NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector will be suspended except where safety repairs will be necessary. The safety repair of the Canumay Overpass was fast-tracked to complete major works before a holy week and to secure the availability of all lanes under the bridge during this period. Free towing service to the nearest exit will also be available for class 1 vehicles from 6 am on March 22 until 6 am on March 25, 6 am on March 27 to 6 am on March 29, and 6 am on March 30 until 6 am on April 1.

NLEX has implemented decongestion projects in Meycauayan Northbound designed to help ease the expected traffic surge this coming holy week. The new F. Raymundo Northbound Exit in Brgy. Pandayan serves as an alternate route for class 1 vehicles going to the eastern portions of Meycauayan and Marilao. On the other hand, the additional lane at the Meycauayan Northbound Exit ramp is now being used as the new dedicated lane for Malhacan-bound vehicles while the leftmost and middle lanes are assigned for those going to Iba/Camalig, providing additional space for the high volume of trucks going to the industrial areas.

Another decongestion effort is the expansion of the SCTEX ramp from Tarlac going to NLEX in Mabalacat, Pampanga. An additional lane for incoming vehicles from SCTEX going NLEX is being constructed and major works will be completed before Holy Week. This will be opened to help improve the traffic flow in the area, especially during peak hours, and will resume finishing work after Holy Week.

“We are hoping that these decongestion projects, alongside other measures, will contribute to a more manageable traffic flow this Holy Week,” said Bautista.

NLEX Corporation also shared that the Candaba 3rd Viaduct project is now in full swing of its construction. Expected to be completed by November 2024, the current Candaba Viaduct will be expanded to three lanes with inner and outer shoulders in each direction from three lanes without shoulders.

While NLEX continuously upgrades its roads and assets to cater to the increasing traffic demand, NLEX appeals for the cooperation and patience of the motoring public that will travel to NLEX-SCTEX-NLEX Connector this Holy Week.

“As we expect a huge number of vehicles, we appeal to the public for extra patience, cooperation, and discipline. For our part, NLEX will maximize its assets to ensure managed traffic flow, but for hassle-free travel, make sure that you are in good fit before you drive, observe proper distancing, and follow traffic regulations. Also, have your cars and RFID checked ahead of your trip,” Bautista said.

The tollway company also advises its motorists to get their Easytrip RFID for faster toll transactions and reminds RFID users to ensure that they have sufficient load before travel to avoid inconvenience.

To complement the on-ground efforts, NLEX Corporation’s social media accounts @NLEXexpressways and hotline (02) 1-35000 will remain accessible 24/7 for any concerns alongside regular traffic updates and live traffic streaming of key areas on Facebook.

  • NLEX shifts to EV fleet, strives for greater sustainability

NLEX shifts to EV fleet, strives for greater sustainability

    [ad_1]

In its bid to further reduce the carbon footprint of its expressway operations, NLEX Corporation adds more electric vehicles to its fleet. The tollway company now has six EVs in its fleet, and eight more are expected to be delivered this month.

“Electric vehicles create a lower carbon footprint over the course of their lifetime compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. The transition to electric vehicles for company vehicles, which we started last year, is an impactful way to integrate sustainability into our day-to-day operations,” said NLEX Corporation president and general manager J. Luigi L. Bautista.

To further facilitate the integration of e-vehicles into the company’s transportation network, an EV charging station is being built in its Sta. Rita’s office in Bulacan is targeted to be completed by next month while another charging station will be built in its Balintawak office by the 3rd quarter of this year. These EV charging stations will use solar energy capable of charging an e-vehicle battery from 0% to 85% in only 40 minutes.

Guided by its commitment to nation-building, these initiatives are part of NLEX’s efforts to do more for its motorists and the environment, as this improves the company’s operational efficiency and promotes sustainability. This is also in line with the Metro Pacific Group’s commitment to help the Philippines meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals particularly UNSDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).

Shifting to an e-vehicle fleet is also part of NLEX’s sustainability efforts as an ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System), ISO 50001 (Energy Management System), and Integrated Management System (IMS) certified company.

“This year, we will also broaden the use of renewable and solar energy in our premises, and we will execute even the simplest greening initiatives we possibly can, to contribute to a cleaner and sustainable future,” said Bautista. Aside from the use of electric vehicles, the company also advances its use of solar power roofing and solar perimeter lighting systems in the parking areas of the NLEX offices. Targeted to be completed by the 3rd quarter of this year, the tollway company aims to reduce electricity consumption by using solar energy in its workplace.

In addition, three NLEX technical shelters are now being run by solar energy. Telecom systems are installed in these shelters, allowing NLEX’s phones and intercoms to function in case of power outages.

Another significant contribution to sustainability is the construction of the four rainwater recovery systems located in Dolores, Dinalupihan, Floridablanca, Mabiga, Clark North, and South. These can store and repurpose approximately 81,000 liters of water that are being used in SCTEX areas.

Meanwhile, over 10,067 trees were planted through last year’s Greening the NLEX program while 28.57 tons of residual waste was reduced through its strict implementation of proper waste segregation and prohibition of single-used plastics inside NLEX’s premises and corporate activities it has conducted. This year, the company has committed to planting another 10,000 more trees as part of this continuing program.

“There is no effort too small in trying to make a change in our environment. Even simple waste segregation makes a huge impact in rescuing our planet. We at NLEX assure the public that we will continue our journey towards a greener tomorrow,” Bautista stated.

  • NLEX is ISO 50001 certified for its energy management systems

NLEX is ISO 50001 certified for its energy management systems

    [ad_1]

NLEX Corporation earns ISO 50001:2018 or the certification for excellent Energy Management Systems from DQS Certification Philippines, one of the leading international certification bodies for quality management systems and responsible energy usage.

With its ISO 50001 certification, NLEX proved its commitment to promoting energy sustainability through various initiatives like the conversion to solar power of some of its toll plazas, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, and roadway lighting. It also installed motion-sensor lights in its offices in Caloocan City, Valenzuela City, Bulacan, and Pampanga.

“As we are now challenged regarding the effective and efficient use of energy, NLEX once again proved their commitment and dedication to making a positive impact on the environment through the successful certification of Energy Management System (ISO 50001). The company has shown commendable programs and initiatives that will surely inspire and influence other organizations and individuals to adopt the same practices and will eventually navigate them to taking the path of greener living,” said DQS managing director Romeo Zamora.

In 2023, NLEX Corporation successfully reduced 154 tons of CO2e emissions in its operations. The tollway company is eager to increase this further, as three of its technical shelters for its telecoms systems are now being powered by a hybrid system of solar energy and the traditional grid. Apart from this, solar-powered roofing systems will also be installed in their Balintawak office by the 3rd quarter of the year to minimize electric consumption in the office.

“While we aim for convenience, innovation, and modernization for our infrastructure and business, we believe that this should not be at the expense of the environment. More than a road, we want NLEX to be the leader of sustainable infrastructure in the country. We will continue to implement projects that will make a positive impact in the environment so that we will be able to leave a greener NLEX for the future generation,” said NLEX Corporation president and general manager, J. Luigi L. Bautista.

Prior to its ISO 50001 certification, the tollway company had secured and maintained accreditation for four other ISO standards namely ISO 39001:2012 Road Traffic Safety Management System (RTSMS), ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System) and ISO 45001: 2018 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).
