    Production begins of the new Nissan LEAF in Europe

    The Nissan Leaf is the most dependable used electric vehicle in Britain.

    At least according to a comprehensive new study by Warranty Solutions Group (WSG), which claims it outperforms its rivals in terms of reliability.

    The analysis examined 1,000 real-world repair claims settled by the warranty specialist throughout 2025. The data reveals that the Nissan Leaf achieved an impressively low claim rate of just 1.52%, comfortably securing the top spot in the reliability rankings.

    First launched in the UK in 2011, the Leaf has evolved through three generations, creating a diverse used market that caters to various budgets.

    James Taylor, Managing Director of Nissan GB, welcomed the findings, noting that real-world customer feedback is the ultimate testament to the model’s quality. “For customers new to this technology, knowing it is going to be reliable is very reassuring,” Taylor said.

    The study highlights a growing divide in the EV market. While the Leaf remains dependable, WSG warned that premium electric models often carry significantly higher repair costs when faults do occur. Common issues across the wider EV sector included suspension components – likely due to the increased weight of battery packs – and air conditioning compressors.

    The timing of the award coincides with the imminent arrival of an all-new British-built Leaf model. The latest iteration promises an increased range of up to 386 miles and qualifies for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant.

    Martin Binnee, Operations Director at WSG, says that the Leaf’s “standout reliability” helps demystify EV ownership. He adds that while fuel savings are a major draw, choosing a model with a proven track record for durability is essential for maintaining long-term consumer confidence in the electric transition.

    UK vehicle production has plummeted to its lowest level since 1952, marking a 15.5% decline from the previous year.

    The decline was driven by a perfect storm of structural changes and unexpected crises. A major factor was a massive cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover in September, which paralyzed the computer networks of Britain’s largest automotive employer. The attack forced factories to sit idle for over a month, causing a production backlog that took months to resolve.

    Restructuring across the industry further hampered volumes. The closure of Vauxhall’s historic Luton plant in March led to a 62% crash in commercial vehicle production. Additionally, major players such as Nissan and JLR temporarily halted output of ageing models to retool their facilities for a decarbonized future.

    International trade barriers have also taken a heavy toll on an industry where 78% of cars are destined for export. Sales to the United States were dampened by new 10% tariffs, while “increasingly protectionist” proposals from the European Union threaten future access to the UK’s largest export market. High energy costs also continue to make the UK a more expensive place to build cars compared to international rivals.

    Despite the gloomy headlines, there are significant positives within the data. Production of electric and hybrid vehicles rose by 8.3% last year, accounting for a record 41.7% of total output. The successful launch of the new electric Nissan Leaf in Sunderland and seven upcoming EV models from other manufacturers offer a clear pathway to recovery.

    The SMMT remains “optimistic but realistic” about the future, predicting that production will return to growth in 2026. Experts believe that if the government delivers on its Modern Industrial Strategy – driving down energy costs and securing tariff-free trade – UK production could exceed one million units by 2027.

    Says SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes:

     “2025 was the toughest year in a generation for UK vehicle manufacturing. Structural changes, new trade barriers and a cyber attack that stopped production at one of the UK’s most important manufacturers combined to constrain output, but the outlook for 2026 is one of recovery.

    “The launch of a raft of new, increasingly electric, models and an improving economic outlook in key markets augur well. The key to long-term growth, however, is the creation of the right competitive conditions for investment; reduced energy costs; the avoidance of new trade barriers; and a healthy, sustainable domestic market.

    “Government has set out how it will back the sector with its Industrial and Trade strategies, and 2026 must be a year of delivery.”

  • Street Lines: 2026 Nissan Z Performance M/T

    After writing high praises for the 2024 Nissan Z Performance in Street Lines, I was undoubtedly excited about what the ’26 version had to offer. Well, my wait was rewarded with an upgraded coupe that came with more power, the manual transmission coming standard (although a 9-speed automatic is optional), and numerous tech features while honoring its heralded fourth-generation 300ZX “Z32” of yesteryear with some throwback alterations.

    Dressed in a head-turning Bayside Blue, the eye will also be pleased with other exterior standouts paying homage to the old school. From the 19-inch forged RAYS wheels wrapped in performance tires, to the long hood with what the automaker calls a “Z bulge, replica 240ZG headlights, and a grille sporting the signature honeycomb mesh, Nissan did a great job balancing the old with the new. 

    One thing that did not mimic the vintage Z was what’s under the hood. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 flexes 400 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft of torque. Paired with the aforementioned 6-speed manual transmission and an EXEDY high-performance clutch, the Z possesses the thrills we were expecting. Other 2026 features include the SynchroRev Match to enhance upshifts and downshifts; launch control; and a mechanical limited-slip differential to make every gear change…well, feel like one. The sport-tuned suspension and speed-sensitive power steering add ideal complements to the thrilling driving experience. Of course, the four-wheel vented disc brakes and prominent red calipers keep those behind the wheel confident while trying all the powertrain’s enhancements.

    Inside, Nissan continues to balance modern tech with the classic Z. A 12.3-inch digital dashboard is paired with a three-bay gauge cluster from the old school. Comfort and craftsmanship come from the leather-appointed seats with performance suede appointments; heated power seating for both driver and passenger; aluminum pedals; and a leather-wrapped steering collectively elevating the cockpit’s opulence.

    Tech and safety also get some love. The signature NissanConnect suite; a nine-inch touchscreen with navigation; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity; Wi-Fi hotspot; two USB ports; and banging 8-speaker Bose audio sound system with active noise cancellation ensure premium entertainment. Easing the mind, there are numerous driver-assist features including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, and rear cross traffic alert to name a few.

    With a price starting at $52,970 and $55K as tested, the 2026 Nissan Z Performance successfully brings authentic, old-school design complemented with today’s innovation without breaking the bank. For sports car enthusiasts who are die-hards when it comes to manual transmission, have love for the Z generations, and overall wants to own a two-seater that promises to be an instant collectible from 2026, on, this Performance Z is the one.

  • Street Lines – 2026 Nissan Kicks SR

    The last review of the Nissan Kicks was earlier this year here, and the 2026 version continues to be a standout in the compact SUV segment. With three trims—S, SV and SR—and I had the pleasure of reviewing the latter, top-of-the line version.

    The stylish exterior thankfully remains intact, boasting a more muscular frame, just enough curvature, and what this Nissan purposely embraces—inspirations from a football helmet and sneaker culture. Regarding both of those latter design elements, I am evidently a part of the market they were aiming for because I was won over, let alone hipsters, sports fans, and advocates of trendsetting footwear. The multi-lined LED lighting package effectively honored the demand for a futuristic appearance whether day or night. 

    Inside, the new Kicks boasts a tech-forward cabin. Not only did the three 2026 versions come with a sleek 12.3-inch infotainment display, a user-friendly interface, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android accessibility. The SR trim adds ambient LED lighting to set the mood, four USB-C ports, plus a touch-sensitive climate control panel to justify its premium claim. Admittedly, I looked for the signature speakers in the headrests, which grabbed my attention when this SUV was introduced to the market years ago. Not only were they still present, but the entire sound system also treated my ears with the premium BOSE personal audio version.

    Of course, practicality should come into play, and Kicks has the best-in-class rear cargo capacity (up to 60 cubic feet is available when seats are folded). Also, note that SV and SR models have an optional Cold Weather Package, complete with heated seats, mirrors, and rear floor vents to make any adventure doable without hesitation.

    Tech shows safety love as well, with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite which includes automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert all coming standard. ProPILOT Assist provides assisted steering and speed control ideally for those long highway excursions, plus the intelligent around view is an undeniable feature that makes anything from parking to simply avoiding any up-close obstacles a breeze. The driving experience continues to be more than adequate, featuring Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, and a drive mode selector to choose between Normal, Eco, and Sport. 

    So whether you’re a first-time buyer, heading to college, starting a family, or simply looking for a car that won’t break the bank starting at $22,430 for the S version, the Kicks needs some serious consideration. The SR AWD I reviewed was still under $30k and is the best pick if you virtually want nothing left to be desired in the subcompact segment.

  • Nissan made a nifty solar panel system for its Sakura EV

    As we’ve seen with Toyota’s Prius Prime, putting a solar panel on a car’s roof is a nifty idea but can only gain you a few free miles a day due to the limited size. With a new prototype of its hyper-popular Sakura “kei” EV, Nissan has the answer: a bigger solar panel roof called the AO-Solar Extender. When fully stretched out on a sunny day, it can add about 1,864 miles of driving distance a year and power multiple accessories.

    The panel works whether you’re driving or parked. When extended (in “solar pompadour” mode as my colleague put it), it generates 500 watts on sunny days. At the same time, it helps block sunlight from the windshield, “reducing cabin temperature and lowering the need for air conditioning power consumption,” Nissan noted.

    When retracted in driving mode, it still pumps out 300 watts in the sun (80 watts in the rain), quite a bit more than the 185 watts max generated by the Prius Prime’s solar roof. And if you’re worried about aerodynamics, Nissan said the roof is designed to minimize drag and integrate well with the Sakura’s design.

    It’s not just a fun exercise, as Nissan said it’s planning to launch the AO-Solar Extender commercially, with details to follow at a later date. It could be a useful accessory on the Sakura, which has been Japan’s most popular EV since 2022 thanks to its “sufficient” range, cute kei looks and spacious interior. The automaker will show it off at the Japan Mobility Show starting on October 30, 2025.

    In the highly competitive midsize SUV market, Nissan successfully makes a grand entrance with the all-new 2025 Murano with an all-new . Reviewing the Platinum AWD trim, I was impressed with the upgrades in style, comfort, technology, cabin space, and overall craftsmanship representing this vehicle’s fourth generation. 

    The eyes are met with an exterior makeover, boasting Nissan’s “Energetic Elegance” design theme. This includes the sweeping roofline, curvaceous body, and futuristic LED headlights arranged seamlessly with the V-motion grille. The two-tone premium paint, 21-inch alloy wheels, and exterior ground lighting further steps up Murano’s game.

    Under the hood, the Murano is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged DOHC 16-valve engine, pumping out 241 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a newly appointed 9-speed automatic transmission—bye, bye CVT—and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, it delivers a smoother drive while gears shift. The AWD appointment adds more maneuverability, while the Drive Mode Selector boosts confidence to take on virtually any road conditions. 

    Inside, the Murano Platinum gets a thumbs up with semi-aniline leather-appointed seats featuring heating, ventilation, and massage functions—a welcomed rarity in this car segment. Nissan gives the pilot even more love with the power tilt-and-telescoping heated leather-wrapped steering wheel; dual-zone automatic climate control; and customizable 64-color ambient lighting to set whatever mood is desired. The panoramic moonroof is perfect for stargazing, and hands-free power liftgate brings convenience especially when hands are loaded with groceries or baggage. The rear sunshades and heated rear seats make passengers feel pampered as well.

    Tech is evidently a major focus. Nissan’s latest tech suite shines through the 12.3-inch color touchscreen with Google built-in; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity; and the highly lauded NissanConnect Services. Ears get treated with the BOSE audio system’s premium sound. Minds are at ease as well with numerous safety features including advanced driver-assistance systems like ProPILOT Assist 1.1, intelligent cruise control; traffic sign recognition; automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection; and an enhanced intelligent around view monitor. The ”invisible hood view” was a standout feature that wowed me, which provided a clear look at what was directly under and in front of the vehicle to avoid any hazards that could require road assistance. 

    Starting at $49,600, the Platinum trim takes the Murano to the highest level, and I was all for it. Nissan definitely shines with this reintroduction, and the accolades will be heard to any owner who considers driving one off the lot.

    The expiration of the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles, initially passed by Democrats during the Biden administration, leaves consumers looking for other ways to save on their next purchase.Experts say the tax credit previously helped make electric vehicles more affordable, increasing interest in them. Aaron Bragman, the Detroit Bureau Chief at Cars.com, said automakers are now offering electric vehicles that are both profitable for them and affordable for consumers. Bragman noted, “The tax credit has been good for just about everybody. It’s really kind of fostered this whole nascent industry of electric vehicles. It’s gotten people a lot more familiar with them and how they work. It’s helped to build out the infrastructure, the charging infrastructure in the United States, because there’s demand for it.     Nissan data breach exposed Social Security numbers of thousands of employees

    Nissan suffered a data breach last November in a ransomware attack that exposed the Social Security numbers of thousands of former and current employees, the Japanese automaker said Wednesday. 

    Nissan’s U.S.-based subsidiary, Nissan North America, detailed the cyberattack in a May 15 letter to affected individuals. In the letter, Nissan North America said a bad actor attacked a company virtual private network and demanded payment. Nissan did not indicate whether it paid the ransom. 

    “[U]pon learning of the attack, Nissan promptly notified law enforcement and began taking immediate actions to investigate, contain and successfully terminate the threat,” the car maker said in the letter, adding that “Nissan worked very closely with external cybersecurity professionals experienced in handling these types of complex security incidents.”

    Nissan told employees about the incident during a town hall meeting in December 2023, a month after the attack. The company also told staffers that it was launching an investigation and would notify employees privately if their personal information had been compromised. Nissan said it’s providing free identity theft protection services to impacted individuals for two years. 

    Nissan North America also notified state officials across the U.S. of the attack, noting that data belonging to more than 53,000 current and former workers was compromised. But the company said its investigation found that affected individuals did not have their financial information exposed. 

    Nissan North America “has no indication that any information has been misused or was the attack’s intended target,” the automaker said in its letter.


    Infiltrating ransomware gangs on the dark web

    Ransomware attacks, in which cybercriminals disable a target’s computer systems or steal data and then demand payment to restore service, have become increasingly common. One cybersecurity expert said someone likely got a password or multi-factor authentication code from an existing Nissan employee, enabling the hacker to enter through the company’s VPN. 

    “It is unfortunate that the breach ended up involving personal information, however Nissan has done the right thing by continuing to investigate the incident and reporting the update,” Erich Kron, a cybersecurity awareness advocate at KnowBe4, told CBS MoneyWatch in an emailed statement. “In this case, targeting the VPN will often help bad actors avoid detection and bypass many of the organizational security controls that are in place.”

    Electric vehicles made in China are spreading around the globe. But don’t assume they’re all produced by Chinese carmakers.

    On Sunday, Japan’s Nissan announced it will sell China-developed EVs around the world. It’s easy to see why, given the lower manufacturing costs in China. 

    The move by Nissan, reported by Reuters, is another sign of how China’s growing prowess in car manufacturing is forcing global players to shift their strategies and expectations.

    A key advantage for Chinese EV makers as they go global is their dominance in the supply chain, which helps them keep costs low. Consider BYD, which Berkshire Hathaway made an early bet on to great success. BYD owns the supply chain of its EV batteries, from the raw materials to the finished battery packs. It also designs its own semiconductors.

    Other Chinese EV makers, including Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto, have similar advantages to varying degrees. 

    Earlier this year, BYD launched an EV in China called the Seagull with a price of about $11,000. It’s quickly become one of the bestselling EVs domestically. The Seagull or similar vehicles from China could prove to be a disruptive force in overseas markets. Already, BYD’s Dolphin hatchback starts at $33,000 in Britain, according to Reuters, or nearly 30% below the VW ID.3 hatchback’s starting price.

    China’s cost advantage is forcing legacy automakers around the world to prioritize cost-cutting.

    Ford CEO Jim Farley said at a finance event in May, while discussing the EV future: “We see the Chinese as the main competitor, not GM or Toyota. The Chinese are going to be the powerhouse.”  

    Many might assume Chinese EVs are low in quality, and some models have had issues. In Australia, a recent recall of one Chinese model—the Ora from Great Wall China—warned about a “risk of serious injury or death” by electrocution during the charging process. 

    But Tesla CEO Elon Musk has gone from laughing at BYD cars in 2011 to these days calling Chinese carmakers “extremely competitive,” as he said at the recent New York Times Dealbook conference. “China is super good at manufacturing, and the work ethic is incredible,” he added.  

    In America, subsidies in the Inflation Reduction Act offer carmakers some protection from Chinese EVs. But Ford Motor executive chairman Bill Ford Jr. warned earlier this year that “they will come here we think at some point and we need to be ready.” 

    It isn’t just automakers. In Germany, car-parts manufacturer ZF Friedrichshafen said earlier this month that it would boost sales within China. With Chinese automakers bringing their local suppliers with them as they expand overseas, “you have to take this development very seriously and adapt in order to survive,” a ZF executive told WirtschaftsWoche.

    Nissan said Sunday it will target its China-developed EVs in the same markets as BYD, which include Southeast Asia and Europe. Tesla, Ford, and BMW have been expanding their exports of cars made in China.

    Within China—the world’s largest EV market by far—Nissan and other foreign makers have been losing ground to domestic brands. With that in mind, Nissan will also establish joint research efforts on EV R&D with China’s Tsinghua University, Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said in a statement, with the goal being to “gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese market and develop strategies that better meet the needs of customers in China.” 

    As the experience of Chinese EV makers suggests, if you can compete in China, you can compete anywhere.

    The United Auto Workers union said its next target is to unionize factory workers at Lucid, Rivian, Tesla and 10 foreign automakers, a move that comes after it garnered new employment contracts from Detroit’s Big Three automakers.

    BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Mazda, Mercedes, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo are based overseas but all have manufacturing operations in the U.S. Because these companies have brought in billions of dollars in profit over the past decade, their hourly factory workers deserve to make more money, UAW President Shawn Fain said in a video Wednesday.

    Also on the union’s list are U.S. factories run by electric vehicle sales leader Tesla, as well as EV startups Rivian and Lucid. All three are U.S.-based companies.

    “To all the autoworkers out there working without the benefits of a union, now it’s your turn,” he said, urging autoworkers to join the UAW’s membership drive campaign.

    Tesla and other dozen automakers targeted by the UAW have long used non-unionized workers at their plants. The UAW said its drive will focus largely on factories in the South, where the union has had little success in recruiting new members. Currently, the UAW has about 146,000 members.

    Still, Fain said thousands of non-unionized workers have contacted the UAW and asked to join the organization ever since the union ratified pay raises for employees at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis (the parent company of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram). 

    The union said that Toyota’s 7,800-worker assembly complex in Georgetown, Kentucky, is among factories with the strongest interest in the union. A Toyota spokesman declined to comment.

    The organizing drive comes after a six-week series of strikes at factories run by Ford, General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis that ended with new contracts. Under the contracts, top assembly plant worker pay will rise 33% by the time the deals expire in April of 2028. 

    The new contracts also ended some lower tiers of wages, gave raises to temporary workers and shortened the time it takes for full-time workers to get to the top of the pay scale.

    “Wait,” I hear you saying. “You’re playing something called The Making of Karateka? That sounds like a documentary, not a game!” Well, my friend, it’s both!

    Karateka is a hugely influential and important game from 1984, designed by Jordan Mechner, who would go on to create the original Prince of Persia, among other well-regarded games. This new release from prestige emulation studio Digital Eclipse lets you play Mechner’s classic, of course—multiple versions of it, in fact, as it was released for numerous platforms in the ‘80s. But it aims to do more than that. Through interviews, archival materials, and other supplements, it aims to contextualize Karateka within the larger scope of game history, providing insight into what makes it significant, and why we should still appreciate it today.

    I often lament that game history—even from as recently as 40 years ago—is so often overlooked and erased, as many people playing and writing about games today simply lack a real awareness of or interest in the age of Atari and Apple IIc. It’s very important to me that it not be forgotten, and that the games of that era continue to be recognized for both their significance to the medium’s development and for the playability and enjoyment they can still offer today. I haven’t even fired up The Making of Karateka yet, but if Digital Eclipse’s recent release, Atari 50, is any indication, this one will also do a wonderful job of illuminating an important piece of game history.

    The studio is calling this the first in its Gold Master series. I very much hope that it’s successful enough to be merely the first of many. Game preservation guru Frank Cifaldi recently said on Twitter, “If the world is to take video games seriously as an art form, we must be able to support products like this.” I strongly agree. — Carolyn Petit

    The front seats of a pickup truck are the safest place on the vehicle to be in the event of a collision.

    That’s according to a new crash test designed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to evaluate rear-seat passenger safety. Four out of 5 compact pickup trucks in the study earned substandard ratings. Just one truck, the 2022-2023 Nissan Frontier, clinched an “acceptable” rating. 

    “All these things tell us that the rear seat belts need improvement,” IIHS President David Harkey said in a statement. A high risk of head and chest injuries was behind the majority of the disappointing safety ratings.

    The 2022-2023 Jeep Gladiator, 2022-2023 Toyota Tacoma, and 2022 Chevrolet Colorado all earned “poor” ratings, while the 2022-2023 Ford Ranger received a score of “marginal,” the second-lowest safety rating. The trucks used in the study were crew cab models, which have full-sized back seats and the most rear passenger room of any of the cab styles.

    All of the vehicles underwent an updated “moderate overlap” crash test, where two cars collide head-on at 40 mph. The test represents what would happen if a vehicle drifted across a roadway’s centerline, Consumer Reports said.

    First of its kind

    IHS’ updated safety test is the first of its kind to include a crash dummy in a vehicle’s second row, with many smaller vehicles struggling to earn high marks in testing, the consumer advocacy publication reported

    However, the test results could prompt automakers to spend more time developing enhanced back-seat safety features, according to Emily Thomas, Consumer Reports’ manager for auto safety.

    “More rigorous tests like these often lead automakers to make changes that improve safety for vehicle occupants,” Thomas told Consumer Reports.

    Auto tycoon Carlos Ghosn has filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Nissan and about a dozen individuals in Beirut over his imprisonment in Japan and what he says is misinformation spread against him, Lebanese officials said Tuesday.

    According to the officials, Ghosn’s lawsuit accuses Nissan and the individuals of defamation and of “fabricating charges” against him, which eventually put him behind bars in Japan.

    The lawsuit was filed last month, the judicial officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the case. The officials did not identify the individuals that Ghosn is accusing.

    Ghosn was arrested in Japan in November 2018 on charges of breach of trust, misusing company assets for personal gains and violating securities laws by not fully disclosing his compensation.

    According to Judge Sabbouh Suleiman, who is at the Beirut’s prosecutor’s office, a hearing date in the case was set for September.

    The judicial officials who spoke to The Associated Press said that Nissan and the accused individuals are expected to send representatives to Beirut or name a Lebanese lawyer to represent them.

    The 69-year-old Ghosn, who for two decades was the head of Nissan and Renault, has repeatedly said he is innocent. In December 2019, he jumped bail in Japan in a daring escape by hiding in a box spirited aboard a private jet out of the country.

    Prosecutors in Japan have charged three Americans with helping Ghosn escape the country.

    He now lives in Lebanon, which has no extradition treaty with Japan and does not extradite its citizens. Ghosn has citizenship in Lebanon, France and Brazil.

    Lebanon has received three notices from Interpol based on arrest warrants in Japan and France for Ghosn. In France, he is facing a number of legal challenges, including tax evasion and alleged money laundering, fraud and misuse of company assets while at the helm of the Renault-Nissan alliance. Renault and Nissan have both been distancing themselves from the Ghosn scandal.
