Drake Bell says he was sexually abused as a Nickelodeon child star  – National | Globalnews.ca

As part of a new documentary project, former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell has publicly claimed to be a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of ex-dialogue coach and convicted sex offender Brian Peck.

The upcoming, four-part documentary series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, created by Investigation Discovery, will see Bell discuss his allegations against Peck, who was convicted of child molestation in 2004.

The sexual abuse allegedly occurred when Bell, now 37, was 15 years old.

A press release from Investigation Discovery confirmed that the series will be the “first time” Bell is publicly recounting “the story of the abuse he suffered at the hands of Brian Peck.”

Though the child in Peck’s criminal case was an unnamed minor, Investigation Discovery said Peck, 63, was convicted for his crimes against Bell.

In a clip for the docuseries released Tuesday, past Nickelodeon cast and crew members discussed learning of Peck’s crimes. When it’s revealed that the victim was a child actor on one of Nickelodeon’s shows, Bell appears and sits in a chair with a sigh.

In August 2003, Peck was arrested on more than a dozen charges related to the sexual abuse of unnamed minor, Insider reported. He pleaded no contest to performing a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old and to oral copulation with a minor under 16.

He served 16 months in prison and was made to register as a sex offender. He is believed to be currently residing in Los Angeles.

The upcoming TV series will focus on shows created by Dan Schneider, the since-disgraced television producer who created a number of Nickelodeon’s most popular series, including iCarly, Zoey 101 and Victorious. Several former child stars, namely Jennette McCurdy, have since come forward to allege mistreatment and a hostile work environment at the hands of Schneider.

top news stories from Canada and around the world.

    Schneider left Nickelodeon in 2018.

Bell was one of the most recognized faces at Nickelodeon in the early 2000s, thanks to the success of popular children’s shows like Drake & Josh and The Amanda Show. Both shows were produced by Schneider.

In recent years, Bell has widely fallen from grace amid accusations of partner abuse (which he denied), substance abuse issues and being reported missing in 2023. In 2021, Bell was ordered to serve two years of probation and perform 200 hours of community service after he pleaded no contest to attempted child endangerment and sending inappropriate messages to a 15-year-old girl.

Boy Meets World stars defended Brian Peck

Actors Rider Strong, Will Friedle and Danielle Fishel, all of whom starred on the popular ’90s TV show Boy Meets World, said they were asked to participate in the documentary.

The group declined the invitation in favour of discussing their interactions with Peck on their podcast, Pod Meets World

Friedle and Strong said they’d both developed a strong friendship with Peck (who was in his late 30s at the time) after he was a guest star on Boy Meets World. The actors said Peck told them he was being victimized by the minor making the claims against him.

Believing Peck, both Friedle and Strong wrote supportive character letters to the judge and showed up in court to support Peck.

Friedle recalled the victim’s mother turning to Peck in the court gallery to say, “Look at all the famous people you brought with you. And it doesn’t change what you did to my kid.”

“I just sat there wanting to die,” Friedle said. “It was like, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ It was horrifying all the way around.”

“We’re sitting in that courtroom on the wrong side of everything,” Friedle said. “There’s an actual victim here. And he turned us against the victim to where now we’re on his team.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Friedle said he feels “ever-loving shame” for supporting Peck.

UN reports ‘widespread sexual abuse of children in the entertainment industry’

The Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV comes at a time when the United Nations has called for an end to the sexual abuse of children within the entertainment industry.

On Tuesday, the international organization released a report that claimed child actors “are exposed to sexualized, violent and aggressive environments that are unsafe for their integral development and in which they can be exposed to the consumption of addictive substances.”

Mama Fatima Singhateh, the UN special rapporteur on sale and sexual exploitation of children, said many instances of sexual abuse in the industry go unreported. This is “mainly due to the prevailing power dynamics, harmful gender norms, fear of retaliation and loss of career opportunities,” she said.

    Story continues below advertisement

Grooming, which is a predatory sexual behaviour, is widely accepted in the entertainment industry, the report declared.

The UN has called for “urgent action” to end the abuses, namely a “zero-tolerance policy” for those who exploit or abuse children.

‘Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV’ will air on Investigation Discovery on March 17 and 18 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse or is involved in an abusive situation, please visit the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime for help. They are also reachable toll-free at 1-877-232-2610.

  • For a limited time only, you can now buy a ticket to get slimed at Nickelodeon Universe

For a limited time only, you can now buy a ticket to get slimed at Nickelodeon Universe

    [ad_1]

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Spring break is here or almost here, which for many is a time to relax and have fun. For others, it may just be the perfect time to fulfill a childhood dream of getting doused in Nickelodeon’s trademark green slime.

“We usually do a staycation. My kids are pretty little. I don’t think I’m ready for all the traveling yet,” said Christina Mueller, of Cottage Grove.

There are signs everywhere that parents and kids are ready from a spring break dance to some thoughts on schoolwork.

“School is kind of too much, you know we just finished with finals,” said high school student Dion Thomas, of Woodbury.

But if you’re not planning a trip out of town, there are plenty of options in town to keep busy.

“It’s a time that we really enjoy seeing people come from all over the place to experience some of the new offerings that we have. Limited offerings, a limited ‘slime’ only, but it’s a lot of fun,” Chris Grap, Vice President of Experiential for Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America, said.

Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America is offering a variety of experiences for Spring Break because, as 11-year-old Jackson Nelson puts it, “Sometimes it gets boring in the spring.”

For littles who love Paw Patrol, there’s a new stage show called “Pups Off Patrol,” or “what do the pups do when they’re not tracking down Chickaletta or saving the day,” according to Grap.

Ride lovers have a new option which is about to open called “Fly with Opa.”

“That ride is a serene journey on the back of a sky bison, made for families as you circle around a highly themed and wooded area. It fits really well with the theme of Avatar: The Last Airbender,” said Grap.

This 80s kid was drawn to a big new experience synonymous with Nickelodeon: Slime Central.

“Over my last 12 years here, we’ve had celebrities get slimed, we’ve had winners of the Double Dare stage show get slimed, but this is the first time guests can choose to buy a ticket and be slimed, and we’re really excited to offer that. I have been slimed before. It is a unique experience that almost defies description,” said Grap.

“Double Dare” host Marc Summers offered his rating of WCCO anchor Derek James’s own test sliming.

“On a scale of one to ten, I give it a seven-plus,” said Summers, who is currently starring in a one-man off-Broadway show, “The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers” at New World Stages in New York City.

James described the slime as “cold,” but added the experience “warmed me as it took me back to childhood.”

You can get slimed at Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays through April 14. It’s $45 per person or $55 for two people. Time slots need to be booked online or at the West Guest Service desk in advance.

Disclosure: Nickelodeon is owned by Paramount, as is CBS News and WCCO.

  • Here’s Who Plays Avatar Roku In Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

Here’s Who Plays Avatar Roku In Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

    [ad_1]

All eight episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender are now streaming on Netflix. Is the show good? No. Is it a bittersweet reminder of all the amazing characters and lore that the original animated series gave us? Yes! In particular, the original Airbender provided origin stories for previous avatars, like Avatar Roku. You’re no doubt here, reading this article, because you’re curious about who plays him in the remake. I respect that!

Avatar: The Last Airbender (both the original and the remake) follow 12-year-old Aang, who finds out that he’s the only person on Earth who can manipulate all four elements. In other words, he’s the Avatar, destined to maintain peace and harmony in the world. But when the Fire Nation wages war against the other civilizations, Aang learns that he has to step into his responsibilities instead of running from them.

In the opening of the new series, we see a sequence in which previous Avatars join each other on a large staircase. These avatars include Avatar Kyoshi, Avatar Kuruk, and Avatar Roku. Here’s everything you need to know!

    Who is Avatar Roku?

Avatar Roku is the last Avatar before Aang. Roku’s soul is reincarnated into Aang’s body, but because Aang is frozen in ice for a hundred years after fleeing his home, the world spends over a century with no active Avatar.

As a member of the Fire Nation, Roku is a close friend of Fire Lord Sozin, who begins the Fire Nation’s conquest of the rest of the world. In the cold open of the Netflix remake, we see Sozin and his soldiers attacking a member of the Earth Kingdom. In the animated series, Roku tries to stop Sozin from trying to conquer the world, and appears as a spirit to advise Aang.

    Who is C.S. Lee?

In the Netflix remake of The Last Airbender, Roku is played by C.S. Lee. Lee is best known for his portrayal of Vince Masuka in Dexter, and Lee Jung-Gil in For All Mankind. He also played Dr. Ba in The Sopranos, and Jin Park in the Quantum Leap episode “One Night in Koreatown.”

There you have it! The Last Airbender may not be a great remake, but at least it’s got some great talent.

  • I’m Praying Netflix’s ‘The Last Airbender’ Will Be Worthy of My Favorite Character

I’m Praying Netflix’s ‘The Last Airbender’ Will Be Worthy of My Favorite Character

    [ad_1]

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is on the horizon, touching down on February 21. But fans of a certain pint-sized earthbending badass will have to wait a little longer for their hero to make her live-action appearance.

I’m talking, of course, about Toph, daughter of the wealthy Beifong family and self-taught earthbender. Here’s why Toph probably won’t be in season 1 of the Netflix adaptation, and when we can expect her to arrive.

Season 1 of Netflix’s Avatar will likely cover Book One: Water

The original Airbender series on Nickelodeon consisted of three seasons, or books: Water, Earth, and Air.

Book One: Water began with Aang waking up after a hundred years frozen in an iceberg, and culminated with Team Avatar’s journey to the North Pole so that Aang and Katara could master waterbending. Although they had plenty of diversions along the way, and we did meet new characters, season 1 was mainly focused on the burgeoning friendship between Aang, Katara, and Sokka.

Judging from the footage we’ve seen in the two trailers for the Netflix adaptation, season 1 will likely follow the same course. You never know, though—the adaptation isn’t a direct remake, so it’s possible they could shake things up.

Toph’s first appearance in the original Avatar: The Last Airbender

In the original Nickelodeon series, Toph doesn’t appear until season 2 (or Book Two: Earth). Her first appearance is in episode 6, “The Blind Bandit.” As a blind child, Toph is kept sequestered by her overprotective family, but she secretly learns earthbending and becomes a formidable fighter. When she meets Aang, Katara, and Sokka, she fits right in, and teaches Aang earthbending.

That means that Toph will probably appear in season 2 of the Netflix adaptation—although a second season hasn’t been greenlit yet, nor have any casting announcements of season 2 characters been made.

So if you’re impatient to have Toph back in your life, I feel you. Let’s just cross our fingers that a) season 1 is good enough to warrant a season 2, and b) season 2 comes quickly.

  • All About Momo, One of the Cuddliest Characters in ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

All About Momo, One of the Cuddliest Characters in ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

    [ad_1]

In the latest trailer for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, the live-action remake of Nickelodeon’s animated series, we meet a cuddly little sidekick. Who is this cutie piece? Whether you’re looking for a refresher on the animated series or you’re an Airbender newbie, here are the basics on Momo, Aang’s flying lemur.

Momo in the Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer

In the Avatar trailer, Sokka (Ian Ousley) tells Aang (Gordon Cormier) that all Team Avatar needs is the two of them, Katara (Kiawentiio), and the flying bison Appa. As soon as he finishes his sentence, a strange creature lands on his shoulder: it looks a little like a white flying squirrel, but with bat wings under its arms and huge ears. Fans of the animated series no doubt recognize the creature as Momo, the lovable flying lemur.

What part will Momo play in the Netflix series? If it’s anything like his role in the animated series, his main job will be to act adorable and make us laugh.

Who is Momo, and why is he such a good boy?

Momo looks up at the camera in the Last Airbender animated series.
    (Nickelodeon)

In the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series, Momo is believed to be the last flying lemur on Earth after the Fire Nation’s genocide of the Air Nomads. In season 1, Aang finds Momo hiding in the Southern Air Temple. Although Sokka wants to eat the lemur for dinner, Aang keeps him as a companion after Momo brings them food. The word “momo” is Japanese for “peach,” and Aang names him after he steals a peach from Sokka. What a scamp!

Throughout the animated series, Momo serves as comic relief throughout the adventures of Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Toph (who won’t be appearing in season 1 of the remake, but will hopefully make her debut in a possible season 2). Momo is also a companion to the team’s other wordless animal companion, Appa.

Can’t wait to get more of Momo in your life? Avatar: The Last Airbender is dropping on Netflix on February 22, 2024.

Offset Hits Miami’s Art Basel & Celebrates His Birthday With His Mother Amid Cardi B Split Rumors

    [ad_1]

All the stars are down in Miami for Art Basel, including Offset. However, the lady by his side wasn’t his wifey Cardi B; it was his first love, his mom.

    Source: Variety / Getty

The father of five was the main attraction at D’USSE Cognac’s Art Basel party in Miami Friday night. He hit the stage to entertain the guests. Standing in the front row to cheer him on was his beautiful mother, Latabia Woodward.

Offset also took the time to celebrate his upcoming 32nd birthday on Dec, 14. While he, his mom, friends and guests partied, one special person was missing in action, his wife, Cardi B.

On Monday, breakup rumors circulated after fans online noticed the love birds unfollowed each other on Instagram along with cryptic social media messages.

As BOSSIP previously reported, Cardi B took to her Instagram story to write, “You know when you just outgrow relationships. I’m tired of protecting people’s feelings…I GOTTA PUT MYSELF FIRST!”

Her husband responded to her sentiments by sharing a clip of Al Pacino’s “Scarface” character shouting, “Hey, f**k you, man! Who put this thing together? Me! Who do I trust? Me!” on his Story.

The next day Cardi went back to Instagram, this time hoping on live expressing her desire to lose “dead weight” before the new year commences.

“Don’t wait until the 25th or like three days before the new year,” she advised. “We keep saying every year, ‘New year, new me, new this, new that.’ B***h, I’m taking that s**t to the f**king heart!”

She continued, “You gotta rid of dead weight and when it comes to dead weight, I’ll say mentality, procrastination, laziness and people.”

When it comes to staying booked and busy, even Cardi and Offset’s babies are pulling their weight.

Cardi and Offset reprise their roles that made a splash, Sharki B and Offshark from Baby Shark’s Big Show! Meanwhile, the couple’s children, Kulture and Wave, will voice Kulture Sharki and Wavey Shark.

Fans are already loving the multitalented Cephus family’s performance. The power couple might need to consider taking over the animated world next. We all know Offset and Cardi love the kids!

Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell Lose Their Jobs to Robots in ‘Good Burger 2’ Trailer

    [ad_1]

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are hungry to save their jobs in the first full trailer for Paramount+‘s comedy sequel Good Burger 2.

The streaming service released the trailer Monday for director Phil Traill’s film that is set to launch Nov. 22. The movie centers on Dexter (Thompson) and Ed (Mitchell) reuniting as staff members at Good Burger as the pair attempt to help the struggling fast food establishment amid its parent company’s plans to grow the brand.

This footage shows plenty of hijinks for the two leads as they get reconnected. “It really means a lot that you came to see me,” Mitchell tells Thompson.

At a different point in the trailer, the guys learn that MegaCorp is planning to expand Good Burger globally but intends to fire the restaurant’s staff. “MegaCorp wants to replace everybody with robots,” Thompson warns. “We gotta do something!”

Jillian Bell and Lil Rel Howery co-star. Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert wrote the script and serve as executive producers alongside John Ryan Jr.

The film is the follow-up to Paramount Pictures’ 1997 feature Good Burger, which was based on the comedy sketch that first ran on the Nickelodeon series All That in 1994.

After launching their careers as child actors on All That, Thompson and Mitchell went on to star in the Nickelodeon spinoff series Kenan & Kel that signed off in July 2000 following four seasons. Thompson joined Saturday Night Live in 2003, and he reunited with Mitchell in an SNL segment that aired in December and focused on a Kenan & Kel revival.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Good Burger 2′s Burgermobile will be featured in next month’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which takes place a day after the film debuts.

  • The Last Airbender Returns in Live Action on Netflix in 2024: A Promising Adaptation

The Last Airbender Returns in Live Action on Netflix in 2024: A Promising Adaptation

    [ad_1]

The Last Airbender to Return in Live Action on Netflix in 2024

Nickelodeon’s popular series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, will be making a comeback in 2024 in an exciting new Live Action version, with Netflix taking the reins. After the disappointing 2010 film adaptation, this latest adaptation looks promising, as Netflix has released images of the characters from the Land of Fire. The story follows a young boy who is the last Airbender and future Avatar, tasked with restoring order between the four nations of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth. When the previous Avatar died, the Fire Nation seized control, disrupting the peace. Now, the last airbender must discover a way to restore balance. Fans can expect this highly anticipated series to release next year, aiming to stay faithful to the original material.

Netflix’s Commitment to Staying True to the Source Material

Netflix has assured fans that they will use the original material as a guide to create the Live Action adaptation. The platform aims to give a fresh visual dimension to the 2005 animated series. This is not the first time Netflix has revived an anime, as they previously produced a successful live action version of One Piece. For those eager to revisit the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the animated series is currently available on the SVOD platform.

The First Reactions are Very Positive

Since the release of the trailer, fans have taken to social media to express their excitement. Messages such as “Netflix, I trust you, don’t be wrong” and “Oh my God, this is so good. I can’t wait” flooded the official Netflix tweet revealing the Fire Nation actors. Currently, no further information about the story or additional cast members has been disclosed. However, Netflix has hinted that more details will be revealed during GeekedWeek 2023, which will take place from November 6 to 12.

  • Ariana Grande Has Entered the SpongeBobverse, and It’s Already Gotten Weird

Ariana Grande Has Entered the SpongeBobverse, and It’s Already Gotten Weird

    [ad_1]

Things have gotten weird lately, haven’t they? Maybe it’s the heat, maybe there’s something in the air. Moviegoers are storming the streets in their neon pink finery to see Barbie, people in the Hamptons are dropping the equivalent of the GDP of small countries to keep their lawns cute, and Ariana Grande is reportedly dating one Mr. SquarePants in the wake of the announcement of her divorce from Dalton Gomez.

Yes, Grande appears to have outed herself as something of a Nickelodeon Adult, years after she shed her Nickelodeon Child Star image, swapping “star of Sam & Cat” for “international pop star.” She is reportedly dating Ethan Slater, her costar in the upcoming two-part Wicked movie and is also a SpongeBob. Note: Not the SpongeBob. Slater starred as the extra-absorbent titular character in the original cast of the stage musical based on the children’s show, for which he earned a Tony nomination.

At least one person would like to point out that that’s not the same as being SpongeBob on the animated show. Jill Talley is proving she’s wearing the SquarePants in her own life, and clearing up any confusion. Talley voices Karen Plankton on the TV show, and, importantly, is married to Tom Kenny, who voices SpongeBob. She took to Instagram Friday to clarify that, no, she is the only Dangerous Woman her mans is dating, commenting on a post by The Cut.

“Hi everyone, I’m married to Tom Kenny (who voices SpongeBob on the TV show),” she wrote. “He is not dating Ariana Grande. I don’t know if Ethan Slater (who played SpongeBob in the musical) is or isn’t dating Ariana Grande. However, they’re both adorable and I totally ship it. Just wanted to set the record straight. PS: as for me and Tom Kenny—we are celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary today.”

On her own grid, Talley shared a photo of herself and Kenny on the set of the music video for the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight” in celebration of the big two-seven.

Oh, barnacles. It looks like we’ve entered the SpongeBobverse. As long as we respect the canon events and don’t alter the secret recipe for the Krusty Patty, all should remain calm in the pineapple under the sea.

Jamie Lynn Spears Auditioned for ‘Twilight’ While She Was Pregnant

    [ad_1]

Jamie Lynn Spears is opening up—not about her fractured relationship with sister Britney Spears or time as a child actor at Nickelodeon, but an unsuccessful audition for Twilight, which began filming the year her popular teen series Zoey 101 went off the air.

In an interview with Variety completed before the actors’ strike, Spears recalled drama surrounding the end of Zoey 101 after four seasons—a decision made prior to her pregnancy, but announced alongside news that she was expecting a baby at age 16. “I think when I wrapped Zoey there were all these plans of things like, ‘Let’s go do movies.’ I was reading scripts for things I was excited about,” she told the outlet.

One such script? “I did read for Twilight,” Spears said. “This was before vampires had really made their mark. Now we all love to watch stories about vampires, but I literally was like, ‘Vampires? Are you kidding me?’ I remember reading it and going, ‘Who is going to watch these vampires?’ Boy, was I wrong.”

Spears previously recalled this experience to Nylon, revealing that she was unknowingly pregnant during the audition. “I remember sitting in this little room, and I think Lily Collins was there, and I felt so sick. Little did I know, I was pregnant,” she told the publication in 2020.

Instead of appearing in Twilight, Spears retreated from the spotlight to Mississippi, where she welcomed her daughter Maddie, now age 13. “I was so concerned about bringing another human being into this world, but I needed to figure out who I was. And the press wasn’t exactly very nice,” Spears said. “I wanted to get as far away from it as I could.”

Spears maintains that while raising her daughter “was not something that I regret or held me back,” she did harbor fears that her acting career wouldn’t bounce back. “I was like, ‘What if it doesn’t work out?’ But it was something I always wanted,” Spears said. “I think I was afraid to admit it to myself because I didn’t wanna give everybody the satisfaction of saying, ‘It’s not gonna happen for you. You had a baby, remember?’”

Since returning to the screen in 2020, Spears has appeared on Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias, which returns for a third season on July 20, and stars in Zoey 102, a revival of her hit show that debuts via Paramount+ on July 27.

  • Seth Rogen Loves TMNT So Much He Busted His Head Open With Nunchucks

Seth Rogen Loves TMNT So Much He Busted His Head Open With Nunchucks

    [ad_1]

During a press junket interview for the upcoming animated film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, actor and co-writer Seth Rogen revealed that he’s been enamored with the heroes in a half shell for so long that he’s got the battle scars to prove it. More precisely, Rogen cracked his dome open playing with nunchucks like Michelangelo, as many of us have.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem follows younger versions of the turtle quartet as they try to gain popularity among their fellow New Yorkers by putting a stop to the villainous Superfly’s crime wave. The animated film includes a star-studded cast of Hollywood actors in supporting roles including Rogen as Bebop, Ice Cube as Superfly, John Cena as Rocksteady, and action-movie legend Jackie Chan as Master Splinter, to name a few.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Rogen revealed that his fanboy-related TMNT injury came soon after his father gifted him his pair of nunchucks.

“Part of the reason I did karate was because of the Ninja Turtles,” Rogen said. “Me and [co-writer Evan Goldberg] both did karate together. My dad got me nunchucks that I cracked my head open with, because I was obsessed with the Ninja Turtles, and Michelangelo specifically.”

Goldberg added to Rogen’s painful recountings of his ninja faux pas, divulging that it was more than Rogen’s head that the comedy actor broke when displaying his nunchuck skills, saying “Seth had just got these nunchucks. He was like, ‘Yo, check this out, I want to show you this awesome move,’ and just immediately shattered a huge chandelier from his parents’ house into a billion pieces. It took us, like, five hours to clean. On a sitcom, you’d be like, ‘This is too broad.’”

“It was instantaneous,” Rogen added. “It was as though what I was trying to show him was my ability to destroy a lamp.”

In retrospect, it’s probably best that Rogen fancied Mikey instead of Leonardo or Raphael. One could only imagine the kind of physical and property damage a kid could do if left unattended in a house with twin katana or two sais.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem hits theaters on August 2.

Bell later tweeted from his account Thursday evening: “You leave your phone in the car and don’t answer for the night and this?”

  • Gritty New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game Takes After God Of War

Gritty New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game Takes After God Of War

    [ad_1]

The Last Ronin comic is being adapted into an action-focused single-player video game that will play similarly to God of War. The popular and gritty 2020 comic, a spin-off of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, stars the last remaining turtle in a war-ravaged wasteland.

While most people think of TMNT as a cartoonish, family-friendly kids’ brand, the actual franchise is much more varied than that, with comics that get darker than anything you’d find on Nickelodeon. This isn’t a weird offshoot or an occasional one-off, either. The original comics that started it all were gritty and violent, featuring sharp black-and-white art and turtles who were less radical and more dangerous. And The Last Ronin, a limited-run comic series from 2020 written by the original co-creator of the franchise, returned TMNT to its grittier, more adult roots. Now, that fan-favorite comic is being turned into a big action-adventure video game by a yet-to-be-announced studio.

In an interview with Polygon, Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, revealed the new, still-unnamed game’s existence. Rosen told Polygon that the upcoming third-person action role-playing game will be comparable to the recent God of War entries. He also assured fans that the story of the game will be “authentic” to The Last Ronin comic series.

This means that, unlike most other TMNT games, this upcoming adventure will star the lone surviving turtle in the dark, far future of the Last Ronin universe. So don’t expect all your favorite turtles and Splinter to be hanging out, eating pizza, and partying in the sewers in this upcoming game. Because all but one of them is dead. (The identity of the lone survivor is actually a big mystery in the comic and I won’t spoil it here.)

Rosen also told Polygon that just because TMNT is a brand popular with kids, doesn’t mean the devs will have to “dial back” the upcoming Last Ronin game to make it “something it shouldn’t be.” He further explained that he sees “opportunities for multiple TMNT games aimed at both young and more mature age groups” and that TMNT owner Paramount will take different approaches to create content for each group. For example, TMNT villain Shredder is showing up in Call of Duty.

As for when you can play this new TMNT game, well, it’s not coming anytime soon. Rosen said the game is still a “few years off.” Rosen was also seemingly tight-lipped about where this game might land when it finally does release in the future. For now, you can go play TMNT: Shedder’s Revenge which is fantastic and out now.
