  • Position coach Isaac Shewmaker is the young mind behind Broncos’ edge-rusher success

    [ad_1]

The youngest coach in Dove Valley also looks the most out of place, by sheer physicality. This isn’t Isaac Shewmaker’s fault. It’s a compliment, more than anything.

On Thursdays, the 29-year-old Shewmaker bends down to mimic a snap and leads one of the best pass-rush units in football in get-off drills. Luminaries bend before him: 6-foot-2, 246-pound second-year reserve Jonah Elliss tenses; 6-foot-3 All-Pro Nik Bonitto waits; 257-pound Jonathon Cooper, whose muscles have muscles, toes. They all snap forward at Shewmaker’s bark. At his beck.

At a Broncos outside-linebackers coach who stands five-foot-something, and played a little high school ball back in Kentucky. No college.

“Obviously, God gave me the brains to do it,” Shewmaker says, sitting on a bench after the Broncos’ Thursday practice. “But not the body to do it.”

But ah, those brains. They have a knack for making the complex seem easy, in a Vance Joseph defense that presents a lot that’s complex. Elliss calls Shewmaker “just super smart.” Practice-squad reserve Garrett Nelson raves about the coach’s “high-level IQ.” Rookie Que Robinson says the young Shewmaker is “smart as hell.”

“You’d probably walk past him in the grocery store and wouldn’t think he coached, probably, one of the top outside-linebacker groups,” Robinson cracks. “But yeah, shoot, man, he gets it done for us. And he’d probably give us the shirt off his back, at the end of the day.”

You know Joseph, the defensive coordinator primed for a head-coaching gig. You know 30-year-old quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, who’s on the fast-track to a play-calling job soon enough. Meet Shewmaker, the most promising mind in Denver’s building who you probably have never heard of.

Just ask reigning Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II.

“He’s got a brilliant football mind,” Surtain says. “And he’s gon’ get one of those job promotions … like a D-coordinator, or something like that, very soon.”

Quietly, Joseph’s defense experienced a large and partly unexpected turnover in leadership this offseason, after Denver fired inside linebackers coach Greg Manusky in January — and then fired outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite a month later after Wilhoite was charged with a now-dropped felony assault of a police officer. The young Shewmaker was waiting in the wings, fresh off just two years in defensive quality control in Denver. And in his first season as an NFL position coach, Shewmaker has presided over the driving group in a pass-rush that just broke its own franchise record for sacks (64).

That room is chock-full on talent, of course. The Broncos are set to pay Bonitto and Cooper over $160 million in the next few seasons for their services, and Elliss is a 2023 third-round pick. The room’s also chock-full on personalities. Bonitto hosts impromptu dance-circles in the middle of group drills, and Cooper bleats loud and often.

“I know it’s kind of a big ask to kinda wrangle our room” Nelson says.

Shewmaker is a young shepherd. Really, though, he has been building for this since he could walk. At 6 years old, he announced at his kindergarten graduation that he intended to become the head football coach at the University of Kentucky.

He loves the game — particularly defense — because it is a chess match. And Shewmaker teaches it as such.

“If they understand why they have to be here because of who it affects, then they buy into it more,” Shewmaker says. “When you just say, ‘Well, you have to set the edge because that’s what the piece of paper says,’ they have a harder time buying into it. So part of my whole thing is, ever since I started was – learning it on a level where I can teach all 11.”

He gave up playing for good after high school, when he suffered a variety of concussions in football and then got drilled by a 92 mph fastball to the noggin his senior year playing baseball. Doctors told him he should stop. (“I was like, ‘That’s probably fair,’ ” Shewmaker acknowledges.) So he went to Kentucky and became an equipment manager, resolving to simply do anything he could to get in the building.

Within a month, the program assigned him to help out with defensive backs. Within a year, ex-Kentucky defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley took a DBs job at Alabama and convinced Shewmaker — a student — to transfer. Shewmaker became a defensive assistant on Alabama head coach Nick Saban’s staff as a college sophomore in 2016. The rest is recent history.

In Denver, now, this Broncos edge-rusher group has answered the call at nearly every bell, down to the depth. Elliss has waded through an injury-muddled season to rack up 1.5 sacks and a couple of tackles for loss in his past three games. Reserve Dondrea Tillman has rounded into a legitimate star in his role, with four sacks and two interceptions in his last 10 games. Robinson, a 2025 fourth-round pick who was thought of as a mostly developmental prospect, contributed two quarterback hits in rotational reps in a Week 16 loss to the Jaguars.

Shewmaker, Robinson says, helps his group focus from not getting “scatterbrained” inside the detail of a formation.

“Plays that I did make — I probably talked to him about it like, 1,000 times,” Robinson says. “He probably told me not to look at this, don’t worry about that, and just do this, and you’ll be fine. And it’s helped me make a couple plays this season.”

Shewmaker has now spent enough time under Joseph that the Broncos’ defensive coordinator — nearly twice his age — often consults Shewmaker mid-game on the sidelines, as Nelson affirms. And the Broncos’ OLB room insists that Shewmaker could coach any position group.

Eventually, they sense, he could be coaching all of them.

“He’s going to be going far,” Nelson said, “in this profession.”

  • Alabama defeats Georgia 41-34 in thrilling fashion as Kalen DeBoer makes SEC debut

Alabama defeats Georgia 41-34 in thrilling fashion as Kalen DeBoer makes SEC debut

    [ad_1]

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Georgia and Alabama, Jalen Milroe and Carson Beck, put on quite a show even with a different Crimson Tide coach prowling the sideline.

Ryan Williams caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Milroe with 2:18 left and No. 4 Alabama beat No. 2 Georgia 41-34 on Saturday night in a wild Southeastern Conference debut for Tide coach Kalen DeBoer.

Then, Alabama’s other freshman sporting a No. 2 jersey, defensive back Zabien Brown, intercepted Carson Beck’s pass in the end zone to secure the victory.

“We pushed each other to the very end,” DeBoer said.

That’s no surprise with two teams that have battled for SEC and even national supremacy almost annually. It was DeBoer’s initiation into a captivating rivalry of SEC powers that added another memorable chapter, even without Nick Saban on the sideline opposite protege Kirby Smart of Georgia.

The postgame message from DeBoer wasn’t all that different.

“We expect to win these games,” he said. “Of course the locker room is full of excitement but I also want to make sure they realize that’s the expectation. There’s a lot of season left.”

The dynamic 17-year-old Williams turned back to grab Milroe’s deep pass in tight coverage, did a quick spin and sprinted down the right sideline. Milroe then hit Germie Bernard for the two-point conversion for the Tide (4-0, 1-0).

“I did a spin move and it was like in slow motion,” Williams said. “It looked faster on the screen.”

    It was fast enough.

The long TD pass came one play and 13 seconds after Carson Beck’s 67-yard bomb to Dillon Bell gave the Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1) their first lead of the game.

A rematch of last season’s SEC Championship Game, also won by Alabama, turned into a scintillating quarterback duel.

Milroe completed 27 of 33 passes for 374 yards with two touchdowns and an interception that bounced off the receiver. He also ran for 117 yards and a pair of TDs. Williams had six catches for 177 yards.

Beck was 27 of 50 passing for 439 yards with three touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions in the first multi-interception game of his career but put on a show in the second half.

Beck is 16-2 as a starter with both losses coming to the Tide.

The Bulldogs scored three touchdowns over the final 9:46. Alabama got the only one it needed.

Milroe led Alabama to touchdowns on its first four drives against a defense that stood as the only one in FBS not to allow one coming into the game.

“Obviously, we were not really prepared and that falls on me in the first half,” said Smart, who is just 1-6 against Alabama while dominating almost everyone else.

The Bulldogs were down 28-0 a few minutes into the second quarter, their streaks of 42 consecutive regular-season victories and 28 straight regular-season SEC wins seemingly all but over by halftime.

Georgia and Beck fought way back instead of folding.

“The first half, we played terrible,” Beck said. “I don’t think we need to watch the film to go see that we didn’t play our best. You know, that starts with me. I’ve got to be better.

“But I’m happy about how we fought, we brought it all the way back and took the lead, just weren’t able to close it out.”

    The takeaway

Georgia: Has looked vulnerable for a program that has won two of the last three national titles in the last two games, including a 13-12 victory over Kentucky. But the Bulldogs showed they haven’t gone anywhere with the dominant second half.

Alabama: The Tide have so far shown no signs of slippage under DeBoer, especially offensively, rolling on the road against Wisconsin and surviving at home against their recent SEC nemesis.

    Poll implications

Alabama will jump at least one spot in the AP poll. The Bulldogs’ second-half play probably means they won’t fall far.

    Trump’s visit

Former President Donald Trump, the current Republican candidate, was on hand for the game. Trump was introduced early in the second quarter, drawing chants of “USA! USA!” and waving to the crowd from a luxury box.

    Fourth downs

Georgia went for it five times on fourth down and made them all. That helped make up from a 3-of-15 performance on third down.

    Up next

Alabama: At Vanderbilt on Saturday in its first SEC road game.

Georgia: Hosts struggling Auburn on Saturday.

The Pick Is In! The Eagles Select CB Quinyon Mitchell With The 22nd Pick – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

Speculation has come and gone. And now we finally have an answer to who the Eagles would select in the first round of the 2024 Draft.

    Flyin’ to Philly 🚀 Welcome, @QuinyonMitchell!@DietzandWatson | #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/t60Q9QOgK1

    — Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) April 26, 2024

The now former Toledo Rocket was the first corner taken in the draft.

Talk about having your choice of pick at #22!

Things took an amazing turn for the Eagles when 14 picks had gone by and all of them were offensive players.

The bad news at the time, was the first defensive player taken off the board was Laiatu Latu. Notably at the top of my list for the birds to hopefully land (see more here). Fortunately, the best option for the Eagles was a Cornerback at 22, and with every option available. Quinyon became the surprisingly easy choice.

Tons of mock drafts were shaken up when the first 12 picks included 6 Quarterbacks. The below mocks had Quinyon projected to go at the following picks:

    CBS (Prisco): Jaguars @ 17th
    NFL (Jeremiah): Jaguars @ 17th
ESPN (Yates): Eagles @ 16th, acquiring 81 in exchange for 22 and 50
    Bleacher Report: Falcons @ 8th

    Stats From Toledo

In the past 2 seasons, Mitchell was productive for the Rockets.

With 41 Tackles each year. 6 Interceptions (5 in 2022). And 37 Passes Defended. (Stats From Sports-Reference)

Mitchell was a lockdown corner in Toledo, allowing a 44.7 QBR when targeted.

Coming in at 6’0, 197lbs, Mitchell posted a 4.33s 40-yard dash at the combine and turned heads at the Senior Bowl. Getting praise tonight from Nick Saban and Howie Roseman about his performances going up against some of the NCAA’s best.

While some worry might come from the level of competition faced in the MAC. The same concern was voiced when the Jets drafted Sauce Gardner, and I don’t think they’re complaining about his play in MetLife.

2 More Draft Days, 7 More Picks

We’ve only gotten through 32 picks of the Draft. And the Eagles already made another standout pick. Even after tonight, big names like Kool-Aid McKinstry and Cooper DeJean are still on the board. And even with some other positions of need available as we’ll approach the middle of the 2nd round. The Eagles have already addressed plenty of question marks in the roster during the off-season with their plethora of free agent moves. Even if they’re not looking for Year 1 starters, below are a few picks I could see the Eagles making tomorrow (subject to availability)

    • S Javon Bullard, Georgia
    • TE Ja’Tavion Sanders, Texas
    • LB Edgerrin Cooper, Texas A&M
    • LB Junior Colson, Michigan
    • Edge Marshawn Kneeland, Western Michigan

Who do you think the Eagles will take with their Day 2 draft picks?

    Go Birds!
