Nick Carter files countersuit against ‘opportunist’ sexual assault accusers – National | Globalnews.ca

Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter has filed a countersuit against two women who have accused the singer of sexually assaulting them more than 15 years ago.

In the countersuit, filed on Thursday in Nevada, Carter, 43, describes his accusers as “opportunists” who are taking advantage of the #MeToo movement to “defame and vilify” him for financial gain.

Carter is seeking US$2.3 million in damages — the amount the singer claims he lost in missed business opportunities as a result of a December 2022 lawsuit filed by a co-defendant who accused Carter of rape.

In the original lawsuit, Shannon (Shay) Ruth said Carter invited her onto a tour bus after a concert in Tacoma, Wash., when she was 17 years old. She claims Carter gave her alcohol and forced her to perform oral sex before he raped her. Ruth also alleges that she contracted HPV from Carter.

During a December press conference, Ruth said Carter should not be excused for his alleged crime because he is a celebrity. At the time, Carter denied the accusations.

“Carter will not allow himself to be smeared in this way,” the singer’s new countersuit reads. “Protecting one’s reputation and name by calling a liar a liar is not victim blaming or bullying. It is simply telling the truth.”

In an email statement to Billboard, Ruth’s lawyer Mike Boskovich, said, “Why should Nick Carter be believed with his long history of abusing females. A jury will weigh the evidence and decide.”

Melissa Schuman, a former member of the girl group Dream, is also named in Carter’s countersuit. In 2017, Schuman accused Carter of sexually assaulting her in 2003 when the pair collaborated on a film project. Schuman’s father, Jerome, is also named in the counterclaim.

Carter claims the Schumans “groomed and coached” Ruth to believe she was raped by Carter.

His countersuit claims Ruth, who lives with autism and cerebral palsy, “was a vulnerable and highly impressionable individual, craving attention and desperate to fit in.”

Carter’s complaints against Ruth and the Schumans also allege they illegally conspired against him and used his late brother Aaron Carter as a tool to legitimize their allegations. The younger Carter brother, who died in November, had publicly supported Ruth and Schuman’s claims, but later withdrew his endorsement.

“The Schumans’ timing couldn’t have been better since, at the time, Aaron was addicted to drugs, battling serious mental health issues, and engaged in a misguided campaign of retaliation against Carter and other members of his family who were worried about Aaron and pushing him to seek professional help,” the complaint reads.

“In the months leading up to his recent death, Aaron not only apologized to Carter for his involvement in the counter-defendants’ smear campaign, but publicly stated that Schuman and Ruth were liars.”

The owner of the Twitter account @ElaineModo is also listed as a defendant in the countersuit. Carter, through his lawyers, claimed the account is likely controlled by Ruth and the Schumans and is used to defame him online.

When news of Ruth’s lawsuit broke in December, ABC decided it would no longer air the Backstreet Boys’ Christmas special. Carter’s lawsuit claims he also lost paid contracts with MeUndies, VRBO and Roblox.

A new lawsuit has accused Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter of raping a 17-year-old girl on a tour bus during the boy band’s 2001 Black & Blue concert tour.

The legal filing, which was first reported by TMZ, comes from Shannon “Shay” Ruth, who claims Carter, now 42, invited her onto a tour bus after a concert in Tacoma, Wash., when she was a minor.

Ruth alleges Carter offered her what he called “VIP juice” — which she says tasted alcoholic — before he led her to a bathroom and forced her to perform oral sex. In the lawsuit, Ruth said she was a virgin and cried throughout.

She claims Carter then “pushed” her onto a bed and raped her as she “begged him to stop.”

Through his own lawyer, Carter vehemently denied Ruth’s allegations in a statement. He said the claims are “not only legally meritless but also entirely untrue.”

“Unfortunately, for several years now, Ms. Ruth has been manipulated into making false allegations about Nick — and those allegations have changed repeatedly and materially over time,” wrote Carter’s lawyer Michael Holtz.

“No one should be fooled by a press stunt orchestrated by an opportunistic lawyer — there is nothing to this claim whatsoever, which we have no doubt the courts will quickly realize.”

Ruth, who lives with autism and cerebral palsy, said Carter called her a “r——d little bi—h” when she threatened to report him in 2001.

At a press conference on Thursday, Ruth claimed “Carter tried to scare me into silence.” Through tears, Ruth said Carter told her that “he’d turn people against me because he was Nick Carter and had the power to wreck my life.”

“The last 21 years have been filled with pain, confusion, frustration, shame, and self-harm that are a direct result of Nick Carter raping me,” Ruth said. “Even though I’m autistic and live with cerebral palsy, I believe nothing has affected me more … than what Nick Carter did to me.”

At the press conference, Ruth said Carter should not be excused for his alleged crime because he is a celebrity.

The lawsuit also includes allegations from three other women, who are all identified only as Jane Doe.

The allegations from the Jane Does are similar to Ruth’s; Jane Doe 1 alleges Carter abused her in 2003. Jane Doe 3 claims Carter abused her at a Florida house party in 2006. Both Ruth and Jane Doe 2 (who was 15 at the time) allege they contracted HPV from Carter after being assaulted.

The civil lawsuit is seeking unspecified monetary damages and punitive damages for past and future pain and suffering.

The allegations in the new lawsuit are not the first against Carter. In 2017, the Backstreet Boy was accused of sexually assaulting Melissa Schuman, a former member of girl group Dream.

Schuman’s claim was investigated by police, but later dropped because the allegation was outside the 10-year statute of limitations.

Carter also denied Schuman’s accusation at the time and said he was “shocked” because “Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual.”

On Thursday, ABC announced it will no longer air the Backstreet Boys’ Christmas special as a result of the new allegations against Carter. The special was filmed this month in Los Angeles and was set to air on Dec. 14.

It’s unclear if the Christmas special will be aired elsewhere.
