  • Brad Marchand scores 2 goals, Panthers get their road trip rolling with 5-2 win over LA Kings

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES — Brad Marchand scored two goals and Sam Reinhart got the go-ahead goal on his 30th birthday in the Florida Panthers’ 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.

Anton Lundell got a short-handed goal in the third period and Sam Bennett also scored for the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Panthers, who rebounded from a 7-3 loss in Anaheim to get their first victory on their four-game West Coast road trip.

Marchand has scored a goal in three straight games since returning to the Panthers from a one-game absence to travel to Nova Scotia to support a close friend who lost his daughter to cancer last month. The veteran tied the game late in the first period after taking the puck from Anton Forsberg behind Los Angeles’ net, and he added his ninth goal of the season in the third.

    Sergei Bobrovsky made 24 saves.

Anze Kopitar got the first goal of his 20th NHL season and Corey Perry also scored for the Kings, who have lost three of four.

Forsberg stopped 19 shots for the Kings, who have started 1-4-2 at their downtown arena after being the NHL’s best home team last season.

Bennett put the Panthers ahead just 2:06 in, controlling and converting the rebound of Jeff Petry’s long shot.

Kopitar scored on the power play midway through the first, and Perry put the Kings ahead on a breakaway set up by a spectacular long pass from Mikey Anderson.

Reinhardt put the Panthers back ahead in the second, getting to the slot and firing a backhand for his seventh goal.

Lundell scored on a short-handed breakaway in the third after a turnover by Adrian Kempe.

Several members of the back-to-back World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers were the Kings’ guests at the game, getting multiple loud ovations.

Panthers: At San Jose on Saturday.

Kings: At Pittsburgh on Sunday to open a six-game road trip.

  • NHL to stage 2027 Stadium Series game in Texas

    [ad_1]

The NHL is going to Jerry World for a hockey game.

The league announced Monday that the Dallas Stars will host the 2027 Stadium Series at the home of the NFL’s Cowboys in Arlington, Texas. The opponent for the game next season at AT&T Stadium on Feb. 20, 2027, will be announced at a later date.

“At the end of the day, we have to fill a stadium,” NHL president of content and events Steve Mayer told The Associated Press by phone. “We’ve never not filled one. And we just became more and more confident that, if we went back, especially to a very unique environment — one of the coolest and biggest and greatest stadiums in the world — we think we’re going to get people’s attention.”

This is set to be the second NHL game at a football stadium in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex after the Stars played the Nashville Predators in the Winter Classic at the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 2020. That drew a crowd of more than 85,000.

“Pretty immediately we just said we’ve got to go back soon,” Mayer said. “We had success beyond anything we could have ever dreamed of. To fill the Cotton Bowl just absolutely showed us that Dallas fans are into this, will come in droves and it was awesome.”

Conversations with the Cowboys continued over the past several years, and the Stars made three consecutive trips to the Western Conference final. AT&T Stadium has a capacity of 85,000 but can get past 100,000 with standing room only, putting the league’s record attendance of 105,491 from Michigan Stadium in 2014 within reach, if everything comes together correctly.

“We’re going into this with our eyes wide open, and that is absolutely a possibility,” Mayer said. “We’re very aware of the capacity, and standing room is a thing. It’s actually unique to that stadium. I would say that we would have a chance.”

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been advocating for a game there since the stadium opened in 2009. Jones called it “another great example of the vision we’ve always had for what AT&T Stadium could be beyond football.”

This will be the third NHL outdoor-ish game since 2024. The Seattle Kraken hosted the Winter Classic that New Year’s Day at the Mariners’ ballpark with a retractable roof, and the back-to-back defending champion Florida Panthers are set to face the New York Rangers on Jan. 2 at the Marlins’ stadium that offers the same protection from the elements.

Mayer said it has not been a conscious decision but also added that it helps the two-week-plus rink-building process get done without weather interruptions.

“It just takes that entire risk out of the equation,” Mayer said. “We are going to open the roof on game day. For us, that’s a nonstarter.”

  • The NHL season will feature Florida threepeat bid and a return to the Winter Olympics

    [ad_1]

The immense challenge of threepeating as Stanley Cup champion got even more difficult for the Florida Panthers when they lost their captain and arguably most important player for the next 7-9 months to a knee injury.

Even without Aleksander Barkov, the Panthers have a chance to do something no NHL team has done in more than 40 years. And in between the rest of the league trying to stop their dynasty, the world’s best hockey players will return to the Olympics for the first time in over a decade, fresh off the wildly successful 4 Nations Face-Off that reminded fans just how good the game is on the international stage.

“If you’re a hockey fan, it doesn’t get any better,” New York Rangers and U.S. Olympic team coach Mike Sullivan said. “It puts the sport that we love on display to the world.”

The puck drops Oct. 7 on one of the most anticipated seasons in recent history, with Connor McDavid going into his final year under contract in Edmonton still chasing his first championship while also teaming with Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon and others who will try to bring another gold medal home to Canada.

Before Olympic play opens in Milan, Italy, 909 NHL games will be played, then 403 more down the stretch after the two-week break before another chase for the Cup begins in April.

“It’s a lot to look forward to,” Tampa Bay defenseman Victor Hedman said. “You’ve got to hit the ground running and be as good as you can from the start.”

Hedman and the Lightning won the Cup back to back in 2020 and ‘21. Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins did it in ‘16 and ’17. No team has gone back to back to back since the New York Islanders won four consecutive championships from 1980-83.

During an offseason availability, Hedman joked, “They’re not going to win three in a row” as he walked past Florida star Sam Reinhart, but who’s betting against a team that has won 11 of 12 playoff series since trading for Matthew Tkachuk and hiring Paul Maurice as coach?

Barkov’s long-term injury, and Tkachuk likely missing the first two months after his own surgery gives the Panthers longer odds. They’re now 11-1 to win it all, behind co-favorites Edmonton and Vegas as well as Carolina, Colorado and Dallas, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

“Be the best you can be at the start of the season: That’s all you can focus on,” Reinhart said. “What we learned last year is throughout it, you kind of have that — not necessarily doubt, but you kind of wonder if you’re going to have it again, that juice, that energy. You just kind of trust that you’ll find it when the time comes.”

Champions usually suffer a bit of attrition, but with the salary cap increasing a record amount, Florida kept all three of its big three free agents: playoff MVP Sam Bennett, defenseman Aaron Ekblad and winger Brad Marchand, whose acquisition at the trade deadline paved the way for another parade in Fort Lauderdale.

“They’re the top dog right now,” Carolina’s Seth Jarvis said.

Florida has won consecutive finals against McDavid and the Oilers with one of the best teams constructed since the NHL’s cap era began in 2005.

Edmonton, with McDavid and longtime running mate Leon Draisaitl, is an 8-1 Cup co-favorite with Vegas. After Minnesota signed Kirill Kaprizov to a record-setting $136 million contract just before the season started, all eyes are on McDavid, who could break the bank if he stays or goes.

“I have every intention to win in Edmonton — that’s my only focus maybe next to winning a gold medal with Canada,” McDavid told reporters in Calgary in August. “I want the group to be as focused and dialed in and ready to roll come Day 1 as possible. We don’t need any distractions.”

The other rivals with shorter title odds than the Panthers are Jarvis’ Hurricanes, MacKinnon’s Colorado Avalanche and the Stars. Dallas reached the Western Conference final each of the past three years.

“It’s just what do we have to do to get over that hump?” Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger said. “We have pretty much same group of guy, and a lot of guys are entering their prime or in their prime right now and we feel like now’s our time to do it.”

The league is full of other intriguing things to watch:

    — Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career goals record in April was a highlight of last season. The 40-year-old Washington Capitals captain goes into the final year of his contract — and maybe his final NHL season — with needing ony three goals to reach 900.

“Knowing Ovi, it probably won’t take that long,” teammate Pierre-Luc Dubois said.

    — While Crosby and the Penguins are languishing through a rebuild that sparks plenty of trade rumors, Sullivan taking over the Rangers is one of nine coaching changes leaguewide. Fellow multiple-time Stanley Cup champion Joel Quenneville is also back behind a bench with Anaheim, his first job since the investigation into Chicago’s 2010 sexual assault allegations.

    — Auston Matthews said he is healthy going into the season, and that makes Toronto’s captain a legitimate candidate to score 60 goals. Former Maple Leafs teammate Mitch Marner could also put up 100 points with the Vegas Golden Knights.

    — New York Islanders No. 1 pick Matthew Schaefer headlines an intriguing rookie class that includes skilled Montreal winger Ivan Demidov and Washington’s Ryan Leonard.

    — The Penguins and Nashville Predators are set to play two games in Sweden in November. Four teams are taking it outside in the Sunshine State this winter: The Panthers host the Rangers on Jan. 2 in the Winter Classic, and the Lightning and Boston Bruins face off in the Stadium Series in Tampa on Feb. 1.

  • Hall of Famer Bernie Parent, a Philadelphia Flyers goalie, dies at 80

    [ad_1]

PHILADELPHIA — Bernie Parent, the Hall of Famer considered one of the great goalies of all time who anchored the net for the Philadelphia Flyers’ only two Stanley Cup championships during their Broad Street Bullies heyday, has died. He was 80.

The Flyers made the announcement Sunday but provided no immediate details. Parent died overnight in his sleep, said Joe Watson, a star defenseman on their Stanley Cup teams.

Parent’s steel-eyed stare through his old-school hockey mask landed him on the cover of Time magazine in 1975 when the Flyers reigned as one of the marquee teams in sports. He won Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe and Vezina trophies in back-to-back seasons when the Flyers won the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975, the first NHL expansion team to win the championship.

After he made his NHL debut with Boston in 1965, Parent was left unprotected by the Bruins in the 1967 expansion draft and was selected by the Flyers. After 3 1/2 seasons, he was traded to Toronto but ended up back in Philadelphia ahead of the 1973-74 season. He won a league-high 47 games that season and led the NHL in wins again the next season with 44.

He retired with the Flyers in 1979 after 271 wins — 231 of them with the Flyers — over a 13-year career. Parent was accidentally struck in the right eye with a stick in 1979 and was temporarily blinded. He never played again.

The Flyers beat the Bruins in six games to win the Stanley Cup in 1974 and beat Buffalo in 1975.

On the flight home from Buffalo, the Flyers plopped the Stanley Cup in the middle of the aisle. For close to 90 minutes, the Flyers couldn’t take their eyes off the ultimate prize.

“We were able to just sit back, look at the Stanley Cup and just savour it,” Parent said in 2010. “It was just a special time.”

With Parent the unstoppable force in net, “Only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parent,” became a popular slogan in Philadelphia that stuck with him through the decades.Parent, team captain Bobby Clarke and Dave “The Hammer” Schultz all became stars for the Flyers under owner Ed Snider in an era when the team was known for its rugged style of play that earned it them the Bullies nickname. They embraced their moniker as the most despised team in the NHL and pounded their way into the hearts of Philadelphia Flyers fans. More than 2 million fans packed city streets for each of their championship parades.

Parent’s No. 1 was retired by the Flyers and still hangs in the rafters of their arena and in 1984 he became the first Flyer player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Parent is still the Flyers’ career leader in shutouts with 50.

Parent was one of the more beloved Flyers and remained connected with the team over the years as an ambassador.

The final career highlight came in 2011 when Parent was in the net for an alumni game outdoors at the baseball stadium Citizens Bank Park ahead of the NHL Classic. “Bernie! Bernie! Bernie!” echoed throughout the park for the affable goalie, who played 5 minutes, 32 seconds and stopped all six shots. Each save made the “Bernie!” chants return.

  • Rangers, Red Wings Hall of Fame goaltender Ed Giacomin dies at 86

    [ad_1]

Ed Giacomin, a Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender and one of the faces of the New York Rangers’ franchise in the 1960s and ’70s, has died. He was 86.

Giacomin died of natural causes, a Rangers spokesperson said after the organization learned of the news from his family. A spokesperson for the NHL Alumni Association said Giacomin died at his home Sunday night.

Known for puck-handling and leaving the crease before it was common practice for netminders, Giacomin won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goalie in 1970-71 and backstopped New York to the Stanley Cup Final in ’72.

“Giacomin routinely heard chants of ‘Ed-die! Ed-die!’ from adoring Madison Square Garden crowds,” the NHL said in a statement. “We send our condolences to Eddie’s family, friends and the many fans he thrilled throughout his memorable career.”

A native of Sudbury, Ontario, Giacomin was a five-time All-Star during more than a decade with the Rangers from 1965-76 before finishing his career with the Detroit Red Wings. His No. 1 is retired in the rafters at Madison Square Garden in New York, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987.

The Rangers in a statement said Giacomin personified what it meant to play for them, adding, “You cannot discuss the history of this organization and not immediately think of Eddie.”

  • NHL makes 5 players acquitted of sexual assault charges eligible to sign contract, play this season

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK — The NHL is reinstating five players who were acquitted of sexual assault charges stemming from an incident in 2018 when they were members of Canada’s world junior team, announcing Thursday they will be eligible to sign a contract Oct. 15 and take part in games Dec. 1.

The move comes roughly seven weeks since Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton were found not guilty by a judge in London, Ontario. The Canadian government told lawyers for the players last month it would not appeal the ruling.

They were not in the NHL at the time of the incident.

None of the players had current contracts and all are free agents. Hart was with Philadelphia, McLeod and Foote with New Jersey, and Dube with Calgary, while Formenton was playing in Europe, and their respective teams let their previous deals expire last year after charges were laid.

The NHL conducted its own investigation beginning in the spring of 2022 when the allegations came to light. It called the events that transpired “deeply troubling and unacceptable” and that while they were not found to be criminal, said the players’ conduct did not meet the standard of moral integrity.

The players met with league officials after the verdict and expressed regret and remorse, the NHL said. Keeping them from playing until Dec. 1 brings their total time away to nearly two years.

The NHL Players’ Association in a statement said it was pleased Dube, Foote, Formenton, Hart and McLeod are getting the opportunity to resume their careers.

“The players cooperated with every investigation,” the union said. “Upon their full acquittal by Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia, we initiated discussions with the NHL regarding the players’ return to work. To avoid a protracted dispute that would cause further delay, we reached the resolution that the league announced today. We now consider the matter closed and look forward to the players’ return.”

Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, earlier in the week, said an update was coming “in the relatively near future” and declined to go into the contents of the investigative process.

“Obviously, we take the matter very seriously, and that’s why it’s still under review,” Daly said Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Asked about Hart on Thursday in Voorhees, New Jersey, the head of the company that owns the Flyers, said they would not comment at this point.

“The NHL’s made it clear they’ll speak first,” Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO Dan Hilferty said. “But right now, we’re not prepared to comment on the Carter Hart situation. The NHL has told us they are running the show.”

Hart, McLeod, Dube and Foote last took part in NHL games in January 2024 before leaving their teams with charges pending. It was not immediately clear how many of the players would be signed when eligible, though Hart as a 27-year-old goaltender with significant experience appears to be the most likely.

  • Matthew Caldwell leaving Cup champion Panthers, becoming CEO of Timberwolves and Lynx

    [ad_1]

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Matthew Caldwell is stepping down as the business operations president of the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers and accepting a 10-year deal as CEO of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx.

The teams announced the deal on Wednesday. Caldwell will begin overseeing “day-to-day business operations and high-level strategic initiatives for the Timberwolves, Lynx, and (the G League’s) Iowa Wolves” on Sept. 2.

It’s a major move by new Timberwolves and Lynx owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, who assumed full control of those franchises earlier this summer.

“I love the NHL. I’ve enjoyed hockey and I’m a big fan of it,” Caldwell said. “But the NBA is just a much bigger, global platform. I really believe in Marc and Alex and their vision and what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to make Minnesota best in class.”

Caldwell joined the Panthers in 2014 as chief operating officer before being promoted to CEO in 2016.

“Our vision is for the Timberwolves and Lynx to set a new standard of excellence in pro sports and we’re confident that Matthew is the leader needed to make that a reality,” Lore and Rodriguez said in a joint statement. “Leading our organization into an innovative new era requires an exceptional individual at the helm and Matthew’s proven track record leading the business of the Florida Panthers is undeniable. We can’t wait to see the remarkable impact his bold leadership will have on this organization.”

Caldwell — who served in the Army, is a West Point grad, received MBA and law degrees from Northwestern and worked on Wall Street for Goldman Sachs — played a major role in many parts of the Panthers’ turnaround in recent years, especially off the ice.

Earlier this year the Panthers extended their operating agreement with Broward County for five more years, ensuring that the team remains in the South Florida market through 2033 and likely well beyond. The team is playing host to an outdoor game in the Miami Marlins’ stadium for the first time this season, has a long waiting list for season tickets and opened a new practice facility at Fort Lauderdale’s War Memorial two years ago.

Caldwell said the change was somewhat bittersweet, which was a sentiment echoed by Panthers owner Vincent Viola.

“There are very few opportunities I would advise him to pursue, but working with Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore on a global platform like the NBA is at the top of that list,” Viola said. “It’s tremendously bittersweet for our family, but we recognize this is an exceptional opportunity and great next step in his career. Matt’s impact on our organization has been immeasurable and he leaves with our respect and gratitude.”

Teddy Blueger and Nils Hoglander scored for the Canucks, and Kevin Lankinen made 30 saves in his Vancouver debut.

It marked the second straight game where the Canucks lost in extra time after holding a lead heading into the third period.

Travis Konecny also scored int he shootout for Philadelphia, and Jake DeBrusk tallied for Vancouver.

Canucks: Vancouver lost a big player less than two minutes into the game when defenseman Tyler Myers went down after hitting Joel Farabee along the boards. Myers spent several minutes on the ice being looked at by trainers before he was helped up and went directly to the locker room, favoring his right leg. He did not return.

Flyers: Highly touted prospect Matvei Michkov made some big moves in his NHL debut. The 19-year-old Russian right wing tried to beat Lankinen with a backwards, between-the-legs shot in front of the net on a third-period power play. The Flyers selected Michkov seventh overall in the 2023 draft.

York put a shot up and under the crossbar 2:48 into the third, but the puck pinged back out and play continued for several moments before the horn sounded. His goal tied the score at 2-2.

Philadelphia kept Vancouver’s star-studded power play in check, killing off all five penalties they faced and not allowing a single shot on the final three.

The Flyers visit Calgary on Saturday while the Canucks open their first road trip of the season at Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Connor Hellebuyck makes 30 saves, Jets rout Oilers 6-0 in opener

    [ad_1]

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves for his 38th career shutout and the Winnipeg Jets routed the Edmonton Oilers 6-0 on Wednesday night in the opener for both teams.

“The guys in front of me were just keeping everything outside, allowing me to see pucks, allowing me to feel it, clearing rebounds, clearing lanes,” Hellebuyck said. “They made my night really easy. Once in a while I made a big save, which allowed me to feel like a part of the team.”

Mason Appleton had a goal and two assists, Adam Lowry and Mark Scheifele each had a goal and an assist and Rasmus Kupari, Dylan Samberg and Kyle Connor also scored.

“It’s great, just to get the season off on a good note,” first-year Jets coach Scott Arniel said. “I did have a sleepless night just worrying about some of these guys on the other team there and how powerful they are as a group. … It’s a road win in a tough barn. We’ll take that and move on.”

Edmonton outshot Winnipeg 30-20. The Oilers lost to Florida in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final last season.

“You had an incredible year that finished with disappointment and it’s tough to just say ‘Forget about it, let’s think about now,’” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said. “But there is a point where we need to do that.”

Oilers starter Stuart Skinner allowed five goals on 13 shots before being pulled midway through the second period. Calvin Pickard gave up a goal on seven shots.

“I feel terrible about what happened tonight,” Skinner said. “It is very frustrating to start like this. It is just not ideal. I don’t feel great.”

    Takeaways

Jets: Connor scored in an opener for an NHL-record seventh consecutive year. He walked in from the top of the circle on the power play midway through the second period and whipped a shot off the post and in. Three players scored in six straight openers: Cam Atkinson, Yvan Cournoyer and Mud Bruneteau.

Oilers: Leon Draisaitl’s opening night points streak ended at eight.

    Key moment

Winnipeg scored twice in a 20-second span early in the second period to take a 4-0 lead. Kupari ripped a shot past Skinner and, while that was still sinking in, Nino Niederreiter passed through traffic to Samberg for a shot over Skinner’s shoulder.

    Key stat

The Jets scored four times on their first 10 shots.

Barbashev, Stone and Olofsson each score two, Golden Knights top Avalanche 8-4 in season-opener

    [ad_1]

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ivan Barbashev, Mark Stone and Victor Olofsson each scored two goals and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Colorado Avalanche 8-4 on Wednesday night in the teams’ season opener.

Barbashev also had two assists, linemate Jack Eichel had four and defenseman Shea Theodore added three. Adin Hill finished with 28 saves.

Mikko Rantanen had three goals, while Casey Mittelstadt also scored for the Avalanche. Alexandar Georgiev made 11 saves. Justus Annunen came in for Georgiev and stopped two of the four shots he faced.

    Takeaways

Avalanche: As their number one goaltender, Georgiev struggled terribly in allowing five or more goals in a regular-season game for the 34th time in his career. He came into the game with a 4-4-2 mark against Vegas, with a 2.59 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.

Golden Knights: Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy stressed the importance of chemistry with his forwards during training camp, starting with one center and one wing building chemistry before adding a third element once he was confident with the initial pairing. Cassidy seemingly got it right with his top line of Stone, Barbashev and Eichel, as the trio combined for 10 points.

    Key moment

After falling behind 1-0 midway through the first period, the Golden Knights wasted no time in tying the game when Olofsson sniped Georgiev from near the bottom of the right circle, firing it short side just over the goalie’s right shoulder.

    Key stat

Rantanen’s hat trick was the eighth of his career, and second one of the calendar year. His last was last season in St. Louis on March 19. Five of Rantanen’s eight hat tricks have come on the road.
