    It’s time to put the phone down. I want to introduce you to a morning routine that eliminates screens and aims to reconnect you with the real world. The best morning routine is one that isn’t difficult or overly complicated. Let’s make a peaceful morning routine that works for YOU.

    Your morning sets the tone for your entire day. Woke up from a bad dream? You start the day grumpy. Had a deep, restful sleep? You’ll hit the ground running in your slippers. Start off with 30 minutes of comparing your garden to others on social media? Not the best mindset to kick things off.

    I’ve been doing a morning routine of going for a garden walk first thing in the morning, and it has completely revamped my day.

    I’m talking no screens in the morning, whatsoever. Just a few minutes of uninterrupted time outside to soak in the benefits of fresh air and greenery.

    Here’s how you can create your own peaceful morning routine in a realistic and achievable way. We’re looking for consistency, not perfection here!

    5 Steps to Create the Best Morning Routine for YOU

    The only way a morning routine and habit work is if it’s actually feasible for you personally. This framework will help you create a new morning routine that caters to your lifestyle.

    Step 1: Move Your Phone

    Most people start their day with their phone’s alarm going off. It’s probably plugged in to an outlet and resting on the bedside table. It’s been there since last night, as the last thing they did before bed was scroll on their phone.

    A lot of people start their day by reaching for that phone, turning off the alarm, and scrolling for a few minutes before getting up. I’ve certainly been guilty of this!

    There are many reasons why this isn’t a good idea, but the first is that we’re getting a mental overload before the day even starts. From news stress to social media comparison to small dopamine spikes, scrolling on your phone means you’re reacting to your morning vs choosing how it begins.

    A recent Canadian study by MHRC analyzed Canadian youth (aged 16-24) and the effects of screen time. Those who reported more than 7 hours of screen time were nearly twice as likely to experience severe anxiety, depression, and psychological distress. On the other hand, those with less than 2 hours of personal screen time showed higher levels of resilience and positive relationships.

    It’s also astonishing how quickly time passes when you’re scrolling. A few minutes can turn into a half hour of lost time.

    Ask yourself, “How can I start my day in a different way?”

    Our first step is to move that phone away from you. Keep your phone out of arm’s reach. Ideally, it shouldn’t even be in the bedroom with you. Use a real alarm clock if needed! Better yet, replace the spot on the nightstand with a plant.

    Step 2: Initiate the Routine

    So if not the phone, what will be the new trigger to start your day? Triggers are essential for creating habits. Ideally, you do this so often that your body goes on autopilot.

    I have two big triggers. The first is that I start my day with coffee. I really love hot drinks in the morning. Even if you don’t like coffee or tea, hot water with a lemon wedge is a great way to kick off your morning routine.

    My other trigger is that I have a dog who inevitably needs to go outside and pee, so his morning enthusiasm gets me out of bed. Pets and small kids make you get up, even when your bed feels like the coziest, warmest place you’ve ever been.

    Everyone could have their own triggers, big or small. It could be a splash of cold water on the face. Putting on your coziest robe. Reading your morning manifestations in front of the mirror. Grabbing your journal and favourite pen.

    Step 3: Go Outside

    This is where my version of the morning routine differs from many others, and I encourage you to take up the practice of getting outside.

    Getting outside has many proven mental health benefits, and it’s one of the best ways to start off the day. Fresh air will trigger a nervous system reset, while the natural light will help you feel more alert.

    I like to start my day off with a gardening walk. I’ll grab my raincoat and boots and toss them over my pyjamas. I take a loop around my garden to see what’s happening, leaning in to observe a new bud or touch a soft leaf.

    It takes some discipline not to pull weeds or move things around or begin harvesting. You’re outside simply as an observer.

    Everyone is going to have a different version of getting outside. It could look like:

    The idea here is to keep it simple. You only need to be outside for five to ten minutes (or more, I won’t stop you). It should be something you actually enjoy doing to make the habit easily attainable.

    You might even have a small walking path to lead you through your garden.

    Step 4: What’s Your Backup?

    I don’t want to set you up for failure. You shouldn’t feel guilty if you have a day where you don’t want to go outside. Maybe it’s raining cats or dogs, or perhaps your body is sore from a strenuous day before.

    Have a backup for how to begin your morning when you don’t want to go outside. The key is that the backup should still involve some level of greenery, and it should NOT involve any screens.

    For me, this usually means sitting where I can either look outside or be amongst my houseplants. Sometimes, sipping coffee is all I need to do while I enjoy the view; other times, I want more active engagement, so I might write or read.

    Beyond your backup, you might want to adjust your routine based on the different seasons or schedules. Your weekend routine might look different than a weekday when you have to go to work. A wintery morning may look different than a summer one.

    Remember, it’s about consistency, not perfection.

    Step 5: Extend Your Habits Beyond the Morning

    Once you have this routine well in place, it can be of use throughout the day as well. Any time you need a reset or feel a wave of stress coming on, step outside for a moment. Incorporate it into your lunch or after-work routine. Think of it as your daily outdoor checkpoints!

    It can also be immensely helpful at nighttime. Having a no-screen rule before bed will help you fall asleep faster and better support your circadian rhythm.  

    Start small, or it quickly won’t become realistic. One habit at a time rather than a full overload.

    After the countdown and the New Year’s kiss comes the talk of resolutions and goals. Rather than get a gym membership or recite positive affirmations in the mirror, why not focus on the garden this year? Here’s how you can set some gardening goals to help you focus on self-care, personal growth, and healing.

    Gardening is much, much more than a hobby.

    For some, it may start as a hobby to get outside more or to grow their own food or perhaps to beautify their home.

    But once you start, you quickly learn that you get so much more from gardening than meets the eye. It’s a way to nurture ourselves and find healing through small, meaningful actions. It’s a way to find emotional growth and support ourselves.

    The best way to get the most from the garden is to not put too much pressure on it. These benefits will come naturally and do best when we let go of the idea of perfection.

    We grow alongside the plants; nurturing plants mirrors the care we give ourselves when we garden.

    This year, I want to help you connect deeper with the garden and, in turn, help your overall well-being.

    So, let’s set some gardening goals!

    Create Gentle Gardening Goals

    Don’t start by setting goals that look more like a mountain to climb than a hill to take a stroll on. People who have chronic pain will know that we give gentle hugs. Those who are working through personal issues will know that we give gentle reminders.

    So, this year, let’s concentrate on gentle gardening goals. One of my favourite things to say is to start small five minutes a day. If you have a whole backyard you want to redesign, for example, start by working for five minutes a day out in the garden as opposed to setting the lofty goal of redoing the entire thing in one year.

    Five minutes a day will also encourage you to get out there daily rather than stretch your limits in one long gardening session. Being a weekend warrior, where you try to tackle it all on your day off, sets your body and mind up for fatigue.

    Instead, try to incorporate gardening into your daily life. Make it a habit to get out there every day. How long and what you do doesn’t matter, but just getting outside and growing a habit is a gentle way to keep up with gardening.

    When I first started gardening, I started with just five minutes a day. When I started writing on the website, I made a goal of doing one weekly project. And now, here I am 15 years later with thousands and thousands of articles.

    It all started with the idea of starting small and being gentle to myself and my physical limits.

    Focus on Self Care

    Let this be the year where you put yourself first. I encourage you to think about how to use the garden to help you this year.

    Instead of taking on a huge project that will exhaust you, find gardening activities that will calm you. That could be as simple as planting some herbs to grow a healing tea garden or planting some annual flowers to bring you joy every time you step outside your front door.

    If you don’t have one already, set up a space outside for quiet relaxation. At my home, that space, for me, has always been my hammock chair. There, I can sit, relax, and enjoy myself. Comfortable seating is really important to have, so you can sit outside and get your garden therapy even when you don’t have the energy to work out in the garden physically.

    Embrace the Seasons

    Many people think of gardening as a purely summer activity, but we seasoned gardeners know there is always something to be done for the garden in all four seasons.

    Some of us are lucky to get these extreme changes in the season. At least, I consider it lucky, as it allows me to frame my gardening goals around these cycles.

    If you don’t have distinct seasons, you can still find these moments in the year to use as a timeline. To do so, ask yourself what different activities you want to do?

    Winter is known as a time to rest, renew, and plan. During this time, most of the gardening work happens inside of us and in our homes.

    Then, in spring, the garden begins to open up. We head outside and see this new birth of burgeoning plants.

    Of course, summer is when the plants are in their full glory. So we spend our time tending to it. We harvest, enjoy sitting in those aforementioned comfortable chairs, and enjoy the space.

    Finally, in the fall, we begin to slow down once again and close things down for the season. We can take our time to rest and enjoy the fruits of our labours before we do it all over again next season.

    Choose Meaningful Projects

    This year, ask yourself what you want your garden to be. Perhaps last year, you grew plenty of vegetables because that’s what most people choose to grow, but you decide that cut flowers are what you feel inspired by. Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to grow grapes and turn them into wine.

    You can find so much joy in putting in some hard work and learning something new from the garden.

    I did a lot of work redesigning my garden last year. I moved into a new house that needed a total revamp, so much of my time was spent figuring out what I wanted to do with the space.

    This year, I finally get to do more planting. I can ask myself what plants I love the most and choose plants with significance. I’ll finally be seeing my design in action.

    I want plenty of fragrance at the front door.

    There will be low-maintenance and drought-tolerant perennials.

    Plants that I can grow and add to my soap-making.

    I want to get back to my roots of growing edible plants in my brand-new vegetable garden.

    Find the projects that will bring you the most joy, and spend your winter planning them.

    Setting Inspiring Garden Intentions

    You will also want to set some inspiring garden intentions alongside your goals. Goals are much more specific and are driven by performing actions. Meanwhile, intentions are finding the motivation and purpose behind those goals.

    A great intention is to combine wellness and gardening. Through this, you can grow a wellness garden full of herbs that are good for you, such as chamomile, lemon balm, and lavender.

    Another great intention is to try growing new things in the garden. Perhaps this is the year you grow plants to stock up on your personal home apothecary or try out some new interesting varieties of stevia (I love these ones from Richter’s Herbs).

    This could also be the year for reflection and growth. If you’ve never done any garden journaling before, it’s a great tool to make notes and see how gardening has helped you throughout the year. Practice gratitude and celebrate the small wins you see in the garden. While it can be helpful with gardening, it also can help your emotional well-being.

    Another great intention is to dedicate time to enjoy your garden. Go out in the garden (even when you don’t have a to-do list) to listen to the birds and feel the soil under your hands. Spend your summer evenings out there, but also don’t forget to get outside year-round to reap the health benefits of gardening.

    All in all, remember that your gardening goals don’t have to be perfect. They don’t need to be like New Year’s resolutions, where they require some lofty, life-changing tasks. Instead, grow alongside your garden at a speed that works best for you.

  • Violent weekend in Prince George’s County stands in contrast with regionwide declines in crime – WTOP News

    It’s been a violent start to the new year in Prince George’s County, which saw three people shot and killed outside a banquet hall in the Marlow Heights area early Saturday morning.

    Police responded to the shooting shortly after 2 a.m. in the parking lot of the venue in the 4300 block of Saint Barnabas Road. 

    Another homicide investigation is underway in the Kettering area, where a man was found shot to death inside a car on Sunday morning. Police were doing a welfare check on a man in the 300 block of Watkins Park Drive when they found the man who was pronounced dead on the scene.

    But those two incidents don’t change the fact that the county saw notable declines in violent crime throughout 2025, reporting a 40% drop in murders compared to 2024. And police there closed out the year reiterating big declines in other forms of violent and juvenile crime too.

    Similar stories can be told in other parts of the region. D.C. has yet to record a homicide so far in 2026, after seeing a 32% decline in that statistic over the course of 2025. The 128 people killed in the city last year is the fewest since 2017.

    The department says some of the credit can go to the federal interventions that took place last year. The Trump Administration surged agents from several federal law enforcement agencies on to city streets to help tamp down violent crime.

    “Now we have no crime in Washington, D.C.,” said the president over the weekend.

    The District reported big declines in other types of violent crime, including shootings, robberies, and carjackings, though some of those numbers have been called into question by federal officials and even the city’s police union.

    Other parts of the DMV, including Fairfax, Prince William, and Montgomery Counties, also reported improvements to violent crime rates over the course of 2025.

  • There are many ways to celebrate the new year in Philly, from the Parkway fireworks show to the Mummers Parade

    Philadelphia is ready for a big 2026 and it plans to start the new year off with a bang — literally. 

    Three firework shows, including one capping a free concert by LL Cool J on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, are scheduled for Wednesday night. New Year’s Day brings the 125th annual Mummers Parade.

    To accommodate the New Year’s revelers, SEPTA plans to operate additional late-night service on its subway and Regional Rail lines. But there’s no need to wait until midnight to celebrate. For people who prefer to be asleep when 2026 begins, there are plenty of afternoon and evening parties taking place. 

    Here is a guide to the biggest celebrations this week, including the best viewing spots. 

    New Year’s Eve Concert

    LL Cool J will play a free New Year’s Eve concert at Eakins Oval on Dec. 31.

    Rapper LL Cool J is headlining a New Year’s Eve show on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway that also includes performances from DJ Jazzy Jeff, Adam Blackstone, Dorothy and Technician The DJ. Eakins Oval opens at 6 p.m., with the concert starting at 8 p.m. A fireworks show follows the concert’s conclusion at midnight. 

    The Parkway and nearby roads will be closed before and during the event. Concertgoers must pass through metal detectors. Sanitation trucks will block roads near the Parkway, and police will use drones, helicopters and a marine unit to ensure safety.

    Delaware Riverfront Events

    The Delaware Riverfront will expand its New Year’s Eve fireworks show to ring in 2026.

    Two fireworks shows take place along the Delaware River on New Year’s Eve. The first begins at 6 p.m. and the latter rings in the new year at midnight. 

    The fireworks will be shot off from three vessels positioned from Port Richmond to Pennsport, and can be viewed from various spots along the Delaware Riverfront. 

    The New Year’s Eve party at Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest offers the opportunity to see the fireworks while ice skating, dancing, riding the ferris wheel or enjoying festive food and drinks. Two ticketed time slots are available. The first runs from 5-8 p.m. The latter goes from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

    At Cherry Street Pier, the National Liberty Museum will ring its replica Liberty Bell to mark the new year at a ticketed party that includes music, food and drinks. The party is open to people 21 and older. 

    NBC10 and Telemundo 62 will broadcast the 6 p.m. fireworks show. KYW Newsradio will simulcast the sounds from each show on 1060 AM and 103.9 FM. 

    Afternoon New Year’s Celebrations

    Several family-friendly celebrations taking place Wednesday afternoon are geared toward children who will be asleep when the clock strikes midnight and for adults who desire a well-rested New Year’s Day. 

    Cherry Street Pier is hosting a Kids Countdown with PopUpPlay from 5-7 p.m. It includes views of the 6 p.m. fireworks show, crafts, music, activities and a balloon drop to conclude the party. Tickets can be purchased online.

    Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse is hosting a free Noon Year’s Eve event from 10 a.m. until noon. It includes games, activities, snacks, giveaways, a kid-friendly D and a countdown to noon. 

    Franklin Square Park has a free Kids New Year’s Eve celebration that includes a “square drop” countdown. There will be crafts from 5-6 p.m., in addition to mini golf, food and drinks. The Delaware Riverfront’s 6 p.m. fireworks show can be seen from the square. Franklin Square closes at 8 p.m. 

    Mummers Parade

    The 125th annual Mummers Parade will kick off New Year’s Day 2026 at City Hall starting at 9 a.m.

    The Mummers Parade, recently named the best holiday parade in the country, takes place Thursday on South Broad Street. 

    From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Mummers’ four divisions — fancies, comics, wenches and string bands — will march 1 1/2 miles from City Hall to Broad Street and Washington Avenue. Spectators can catch performances at three intersections along Broad Street — Sansom, Pine and Carpenter streets. 

    The string bands will perform at a special viewing area at 17th and Market streets before making their way to City Hall. They will begin setting up at 11 a.m. on Market Street between 17th and 21st streets, and on John F. Kennedy Boulevard between 17th and 20th streets.

    Reserved bleacher seating is set up at City Hall, where the judges are stationed, but tickets are sold out. The 28th annual Fancy Brigade Finale — a pair of performances at the Pennsylvania Convention Center — also is sold out.

    Various road closures and parking restrictions will begin taking effect on New Year’s Eve and continue until the parade concludes. 

    The parade is being broadcast on WDPN-TV (MeTV2) and simulcast on WFMZ-TV Channel 69.

  • Christmas & New Year’s change trash schedules for Charlotte, Mecklenburg towns

    As the Christmas and New Year’s holidays approach, Charlotte and Mecklenburg County residents should expect changes to their regular trash and recycling pickup schedules in the coming weeks.

    Here’s what you need to know.

    Charlotte trash pickup holiday schedule

    ▪ Charlotte: During the week of Christmas, all trash and recycling collection services will operate on a one-day delay beginning on Christmas Day according to City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services. This means, for example, collections days scheduled on Friday, Dec. 26 will receive service the following day.

    Trash pickup will not be interrupted during the week of New Year’s (Dec. 29-Jan. 2).

    ▪ Mecklenburg County solid waste centers will be close at 1 p.m. on Dec. 24 and remain closed until Dec. 26. They will also be closed on New Year’s Day.

    Hazardous and flammable items such as batteries, gas containers and chemicals, should not be placed in garbage and recycling carts, the city says. Instead of throwing hazardous items in the trash, take them to one of the county’s full-service centers.

    Mecklenburg County towns trash schedule

    Waste Pro, the solid waste collection service that most Mecklenburg County towns use for trash pickup, will operate on a one-day delay beginning on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

    This means Thursday and Friday pickups for Cornelius, Davidson, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville will instead be Friday and Saturday, respectively.

    Here’s where you can find more information on trash collection services for each town:

    Huntersville holiday garbage collection schedule

    Trash collection in Huntersville will be delayed by one day beginning on Christmas Day. Typical Thursday and Friday pickups will instead be Friday and Saturday, respectively. Service will not be interrupted on New Year’s Day.

    Ferguson made a surprise appearance with the royal family on Christmas Day, participating in the crew’s traditional walk from their estate at Sandringham to church for the first time in three decades. She accompanied her disgraced ex-husband, Prince Andrew, as well as the couple’s daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. This is the second year that Andrew has rejoined the fold of Christmas festivities after the shock of allegations of sexual assault and his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. (Andrew settled a lawsuit with accuser Virginia Giuffre out of court in early 2022, acknowledging in a statement that Giuffre had suffered as an “established victim of abuse,” though he did not admit culpability.)

    Though Sarah and Andrew divorced in 1996, they still live together at the Royal Lodge in Windsor and remain close. Eugenie once called her parents “the best divorced couple I know.”

    In her recap post, Ferguson also celebrated the sales of her latest historical romance novel (the late Queen Elizabeth was a fan of her prior work, according to Fergie), her new grandchild (Eugenie’s second son with Jack Brooksbank, Ernest), and the many, many people she met in her adventures as a royal.

Swift was very publicly on hand for the winter holidays in the Midwest, where boyfriend Kelce is a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs: She cheered him on from a VIP box on both Christmas Day (a loss, though she scored points by wearing a festive Santa hat emblazoned with Kelce’s jersey number) and New Year’s Eve (a victory for the Chiefs! The Swift sartorial score: No hat, cool jacket).

    After Kelce’s last game of the year, the duo dressed up to send 2023 on its way in style. Swift wore a sparkly silver minidress, which a Swift fashion blog has identified as being by designer Clio Peppiatt, the same label responsible for her moon-and-stars emblazoned bedazzled birthday minidress in December. She kept the Midnights theme going strong on New Year’s, sporting celestial-inspired hairpins in her ‘do. And, lest we forget, her red lip classic thing that you like is still going strong. For his part, Kelce wore a dark corduroy ensemble, even pulling the old “sunglasses inside at night during a time of year when the sun sets before 6 p.m.” move in some snaps.

    The couple toasted alongside Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes, the quarterback for Kansas City and his wife, with whom Swift appears to have become fast friends since she and Kelce began dating over the summer.

    Swift will begin the next leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour in Tokyo in February.

    A survey conducted by the platform on 1,000 U.S. adults in October reports that 48% of participants are focused on improving their physical health in 2024. Meanwhile, 36% of participants are prioritizing bettering their mental health.

    From there, the number two resolution for Americans is cited as improving their finances. The resolution of enhancing mental health arrives at number three.

    Furthermore, losing weight and improving one’s diet round out the list of resolutions Americans are most engaged with this year.

    However, there’s also a list of resolutions that Americans are not feeling this year.

    They reportedly include performing better at work, drinking less alcohol, traveling more, and improving their work-life balance.

    How To Stick To Your Resolutions Throughout The New Year

    The Forbes Health Survey also revealed that New Year’s resolutions usually last around two to four months. After that, the survey reports that individuals typically forget or give up on their goals.

    Additionally, the survey determined that only 5% of Americans continue with their resolutions for six months. Furthermore, only 1% of Americans stick to their goals throughout the entire year.

    Dr. Sabrina Romanoff, a clinical psychologist and Forbes Health Advisory member, believes this is because individuals become too focused on “a specific outcome.”

    “We often fail in achieving and keeping New Year’s resolutions because they focus on a specific outcome,” Dr. Romanoff told the outlet. “Goals take time, and many folks become discouraged and eventually relent before attaining the goal.”

    Instead of becoming hyper-focused on our desired outcomes, Dr. Romanoff believes individuals should link their goals to something more consistent and ever present in their lives — their values.

    “Values are never actually achieved; rather, they operate as a compass, constantly informing and guiding our behaviors,” she explained.

    Additionally, the psychologist recommends that individuals split their goals up into those that are long-term and short-term.

    “Divide your goals between those that can be accomplished either in the long or short term,” Dr. Romanoff added. “creating an action plan that links the long-term goal with the near-term achievable and realistic goals will ensure success.”

    Furthermore, the outlet recommends that individuals prepare themselves for any unexpected barriers that may come in the way of their plans. For example, if one’s goal is to work out more, setting proper attire at the beginning of each day can eliminate the hassle of finding clothes minutes before heading to the gym.

    Lastly, the outlet encourages individuals to remember to reward themselves for their progress.

    “This will shape and reinforce improvement and sustain motivation,” Dr. Romanoff explained. “For example, if you walk 5,000 steps daily in the next month, buy yourself special headphones to use on your walks. If you exercise four days per week for the next three weeks, buy yourself a new workout set you’ve been eyeing.”

    Classic Champagne Cocktail

    Find a good bottle and be prepared to have a good time!

    Ingredients

    • 3 ounces brandy
    • 4 ounces of Triple Sec, Cointreau or Grand Marnier
    • 1 bottle champagne or prosecco

    Create

    • Set out four champagne flutes
    • Pour ¾ ounce of brandy into the bottom of each glass.
    • Pour an ounce of Triple Sec or Cointreau into each glass over the brandy. Do not stir.
    • Top up with champagne.

    Use the leftover bubbles to make another round!

    The original tequila sunrise contained tequila, crème de cassis, lime juice, and soda water, and was served at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel where it was created 1930s. It has been ragingly popular ever since. Try this simplified classic.

    Ingredients

    • 3 ounces orange juice
    • 1 ½ ounces your favorite tequila
    • ½ ounce grenadine

    Create

    Pour tequila and orange juice in a tall glass over ice, stir briefly to combine. Add grenadine and watch as it sinks.

    Ikigai (ee-key-guy) is the Japanese word for the meaning of life. “Iki” means “life,” and “gai” denotes value or worth. It is a philosophy that overlays someone’s passions, skills and money-making capacity with their potential contribution to the world. Each aspect is represented by a circle in a Venn diagram, and where they overlap at the center is one’s ikigai. Ikigai gives a person purpose and inspires them to get out of bed every day.

    When I discovered ikigai, I found that it linked up perfectly with the upper level of Maslow’s five-tier model of the hierarchy of human needs: self-actualization. Many people do not understand what self-actualization means, and even fewer people are able to achieve that level of personal development. Ikigai makes it more comprehensible. When we are able to work through the four questions of ikigai, we can fill in the gaps of how we are living. As a philosophical formula, it is the perfect way to craft a New Year’s resolution and lay out an approach to fulfill it in the year ahead.

    The value proposition of ikigai

    To grasp ikigai, visualize the four overlapping circles representing these questions: What are you passionate about? What are you good at? What can you be paid for? And what is it that you have or can do that the world needs?

    The key to starting the year by using ikigai is seeing how all four circles come together. To answer those questions and discover one’s ikigai, you must, as the ancient Greeks understood, “know yourself.” Knowing yourself is the same as knowing your value proposition. It is why, in the business world, when one knows their value, they should worry less about the competition — they can always come up with a different perspective.

    Where people go wrong is being unable to even identify their passion. Without knowing their passion, they fail on the second layer (expertise) and the third (making money), and so they have no resources to offer something of value to the world. Finding the bottleneck in one’s personal process can define how they strategize putting their New Year’s resolution into action.

    Taking it one bite at a time

    In Chinese, we say “It’s impossible to become fat with just one mouthful.” Or in English, “Rome was not built in one day.” There is no rush. Knowing the ikigai process will help individuals understand their next bite as they contemplate their broader objective. Similarly, in business, there is always some bottleneck in the supply chain.

    In ikigai, the first link in the chain is identifying your passion. Think about it in terms of attention. Google’s 2017 research paper, “Attention Is All You Need,” introduced a deep learning architecture that revolutionized artificial intelligence and laid the foundation for AI in its current form. It also made it very fashionable to say that attention is everything.

    But everything does start from attention, which means it starts from passion. We can focus on the negative, but even that form of attention is not dichotomous. Las Vegas was built in the imagination before it was physically built. Starbucks changed coffee culture forever when it became the “third place” — that space between home and work where people enjoy coffee and life outside home or office. Both started as an idea. Identify where your attention often goes, what excites your imagination, and you have your passion.

    Working through the layers

    My passion is to use my expertise in strategy development to help people, so the next step for me is to establish authority through the classic rhetorical triangle: by building trust and credibility (ethos); appealing to emotion (pathos); and appealing to the audience’s intellect (logos). That is how I map out expertise so that it will be easier for others to accept what I promote.

    If you are passionate about organic coffee, then go to that industry to see how other people make money. If expertise is missing, then take steps to develop it. Ideally, that would have been your New Year’s resolution — but it is not too late to shift focus.

    When we address the third aspect of ikigai, making money, we want to get our mentality right. I tell the people who come to me for help that they are not going to be a slave for money — but the master of it. To realize the meaning of life, we need money. That is just the reality of our world. Then, once we have addressed any reticence around money, we can focus on how we are going to have a global impact.

    Enacting your New Year’s resolution

    The last piece of the ikigai puzzle can be the easiest one. What can you do to help change the world? Once you have answered the first three questions, finding the affinity between what you do and what the world needs is usually not difficult. Ikigai assumes the intrinsic connection between personal fulfillment and social contribution. If you have identified what you love and what the world needs, the next logical step should be quite obvious.

    For instance, if someone has a passion for dogs and wants to utilize the ikigai philosophy, they could put themselves in a position to understand any gaps in the market. Once they develop their expertise, it is time to find a way to make money from their passion — so they could create a monetized YouTube channel dedicated to dogs. Then, they would use that platform to educate viewers on dog adoption, health, grooming or however else they can serve the market. Wherever one is weak in this example, that ought to be the focus of their New Year’s resolution and beyond.

    It is safe to assume that most people have not found their ikigai yet, so the new year is the perfect time to begin to put the four aspects together, one layer at a time. In this Japanese philosophy and model, the value of life is hidden in plain sight and is awaiting your discovery in 2024.
