    FRIDAY, Dec. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) — It’s that time of year again, when people gather up their best intentions for living a healthier life and make New Year’s resolutions.

    Luckily, the American Medical Association (AMA) has some suggestions on which pledges pack the most punch.

    Start by being more physically active. Adults should do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity, the AMA recommends.

    “Many people kick off the start of each new year with big-picture health resolutions — ambitious, immediate lifestyle changes that are very difficult to maintain,” AMA president Dr. Jack Resneck Jr. said in an association news release. “The good news is that small, positive health choices made right now can have long-lasting effects.”

    Here are 10 more tips from the AMA:

    • Manage your stress with a good diet, at least 7.5 hours of nightly sleep, daily exercise and wellness activities, such as yoga and meditation. Ask for help from a mental health professional when you need it.
    • Eat fewer processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Eat less red meat and processed meats, replacing these with more plant-based foods, such as olive oil, nuts and seeds.
    • Drink water in place of sugar-sweetened beverages. Even 100% fruit juices are associated with a higher all-cause mortality risk.
    • Alcohol should be consumed only in moderation, with up to one drink per day for women and two for men.
    • If you use tobacco or e-cigarettes, talk to your doctor about how to quit. Keep your home and car smoke-free to eliminate secondhand exposure.
    • Get your vaccines. The whole family should be up to date on all of their vaccines, including the flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine.
    • Stay up to date on screening. Millions of cases of breast, colon and prostate cancers may have been missed because of pandemic-related care disruptions.
    • Know your blood pressure numbers. You can better understand what’s right for you by visiting ManageYourBP.org. Controlling high blood pressure will reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.
    • Also learn your risk for type 2 diabetes. You can do this with a two-minute online self-screening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org. Lifestyle changes made now can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
    • If taking prescription opioids or other medications, follow your doctor’s instructions, store them safely to prevent diversion or misuse, and properly dispose of any leftover medication. Always take antibiotics exactly as prescribed.

Think of them as gentle suggestions to keep in mind as you head into 2023 and want to do a good job of keeping your allergy and asthma symptoms under control.

    “More than 50 million people in the U.S. suffer from allergic conditions,” says allergist Kathleen May, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “That’s a lot of Americans who need to be mindful of staying healthy to keep symptoms under control. Taking a few moments before the new year begins to consider how you’ll keep yourself on top of sneezing and wheezing in 2023 is well worth your investment of time. It’s a valuable way to get your year off to a great start.”

    Following are four New Year’s resolutions from ACAAI that those who suffer from allergies or asthma may want to consider. 

    1. Eat right to avoid food allergens – Anyone with a food allergy knows they need to steer clear of foods that cause an allergic reaction. The best way to do that is to do your research – whether it’s for your child or for yourself. Make sure you always carry two epinephrine auto injectors with you, and that they are up to date. Teens and college kids sometimes avoid mentioning food allergies so they won’t stick out among their peers. Encourage them to educate their friends and make them allies in keeping them safe from anaphylaxis.
    2. Get organized about your health – Has it been a while since you or your child had a visit with your allergist? Covid knocked things off track, but it’s probably time to make an appointment again. Make sure all medications are current, and that your prescriptions are working. A board-certified allergist can develop a plan tailored to your allergies and asthma to help you lead the life you want. The new year is the perfect time to check in with your allergist if you haven’t seen them recently. ACAAI has an allergist locator to help you find an allergist near you.
    3. No smoking! – You know you need to quit, for your health and your child’s, especially if either of you has asthma. Secondhand smoke is particularly harmful to kids’ lungs, and studies have shown children with asthma who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home have nearly double the risk of being hospitalized than children with asthma who aren’t exposed. And even though the idea of a roaring fire is tempting this time of year, if you or your kids have asthma, you should steer clear of fireplace fires and campfires.
    4. Huff and puff for the right reasons – Although the idea of exercising with asthma can make you nervous about flares, exercise is vital to maintaining good health. Always use your pre-exercise asthma medicine (generally, your inhaled bronchodilator) before beginning exercise, if recommended by your allergist. Perform warm-up exercises and have a good cool-down period after exercise. If it’s cold and windy outside, work out indoors or wear a mask or loose scarf over your nose and mouth. If asthma limits your ability to exercise, see your allergist to discuss a possible adjustment to your asthma medication routine.

    Did you put better nutrition on your list of  New Year’s resolutions? You can absolutely achieve that goal. But you’ll want to set yourself up for success. 

    The problem: “Most people have unrealistic expectations,” says Cynthia Sass, a nutritionist and author. “They decide this is the year they’re going to completely change everything about their diet,” Sass says. “That’s just too hard to do.” 

    Willpower isn’t the issue. “Willpower is about depriving yourself, and nobody gets excited about that. Besides, depriving yourself is depressing and leads to bingeing,” Sass says. ” Focus on the positives — you feel better, have more energy, when you eat healthy.” 

    Nutrition Goals: What Actually Works

    When making dietary changes, “start small,” Sass says. “Set a few realistic goals. In the long run, you’ll have better self-esteem and more self-confidence because you’ll actually stick with them.”

    Here are a few tips to get you started:

    • Make time for breakfast  “Skipping breakfast gives you the munchies later on and slows your metabolism down,” says registered dietitian Heidi Reichenberger.She advises starting the day with yogurt and fruit or whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk.
    • Don’t skip any meals or snacks. “Try not to let more than five hours go by without eating. Waiting too long can zap energy, and can lead to overeating later,” Sass says. “Eat a (healthy) snack between lunch and dinner, maybe right before leaving work, so you will be less likely to grab snack foods once you get home.”
    • Include a total of 30 minutes of activity every day. “It doesn’t have to be all at once,” Reichenberger says. If it takes 10 minutes to walk from the bus stop, get off at the next furthest stop so you get a few more minutes walking. And walk it briskly — you can lose some weight, improve your cardiovascular system, and sleep better.
    • Drink fewer sodas and other sweetened drinks, like iced tea. A big bottle of a juice-based drink can contain 300 calories — and those calories add up. Drink water instead. Or mix juice and water, so you’re not drinking something so heavily loaded with sugar.
    • Meet your goal. Aim to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
    • Buy pre-cut fruits and vegetables,. Convenience makes you more likely to choose them when you’re hungry. 
    • Keep frozen veggies in the fridge. They are easy, quick, and rich in nutrients. Take them to work for a quick lunch you can heat in the microwave. Season with black pepper, herbs, lemon juice, or a red wine-and-balsamic vinegar dressing.
    • Pack healthy snacks.  Think of things like hummus, yogurt, cut-up veggies, and string chees. Bring them to work, school, or other activities. That way, you’re prepared amd will save money.
    • Upgrade your salad. Add whole grains to boost the  fiber, so you’ll feel full.
    • Fix pasta dishes with veggies and lean protein (like canned tiny shrimp, tuna canned in water, precooked chicken breast, or soy crumbles). Adding protein and veggies to pasta allows you to cut back on the amount of pasta (which is high in carbohydrates) while still feeling full.
    • Go for variety. You don’t want to eat the same fruits and veggies all the time. You want a wide array of colors and types. For instance, choose a variety of fruits instead of buying one large bag of the same fruit. “After the third or fourth day of apples, you’ll likely be sick of them,” Sass says  “Mixing up a few different types of apples, one pear, one banana will keep you from getting bored.”
