A new pizza restaurant is coming to Lake Wylie.

Maryland-based Ledo Pizza should open in the first quarter of next year in the WestLake Village shopping center at S.C. 49 and S.C. 55, said Larry Rose, whose family will run the new restaurant. His son Andrew has run the Rock Hill Ledo location for a dozen years.

“Same concept as we’ve got at the current one in Rock Hill,” Larry Rose said. “It’ll be almost identical, a sister store.”

Aston, the Charlotte-based developer of WestLake Village, shows a Ledo Pizza in its online information about the property. Ledo Pizza joins the anchor Harris Teeter grocery store at WestLake Village, along with a Chase bank, Harris Teeter fuel center, Heartland Dental office and Zen Nail Spa.

The Maryland-based pizza restaurant is known for its rectangular, Maryland-style pizza with thick-cut pepperoni and smoked provolone cheese. The menu includes calzone, stromboli, shrimp, meatballs and several kinds of chicken in addition to the namesake pizza.

Beyond the Rock Hill Ledo Pizza, the next closest ones are in North Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, North Carolina.

The new Lake Wylie spot will be 2,400 square feet with a patio area, according to the Aston listing.

The Rose family opened a restaurant years ago in Rock Hill after Larry Rose’s daughter attended Winthrop University. He lives in Clover, so Rose knows the fast-growing Lake Wylie area with its mix of long-established and new neighborhoods.

“It’s a perfect distance to serve the neighborhood in that community,” he said.

WestLake is on a similar development schedule to Catawba Ridge Market in Fort Mill, another Harris Teeter-anchored shopping center. The Fort Mill property will have a Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, Fifth Third Bank and Harris Teeter fuel center.

At a groundbreaking last year for Catawba Ridge Market, developers planned to open both shopping centers by spring 2027.

Rocco has partnered on the new eatery with Racanelli Construction, the same company that built his late father’s namesake restaurant on Long Island. The restaurant at Walt Whitman Shops will feature 200 seats with an all-season outdoor patio space.

Rocco’s Tacos & Tequila Bar got its start in 2007 with one restaurant in West Palm Beach, and has since opened eight more Florida locations, including Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Naples, Orlando, Palm Beach Gardens, Sarasota and Tampa.

Rocco’s has a Mexican-inspired menu featuring guacamole prepared table-side, hand-pressed corn tortillas cooked onsite, salads, quesadillas, burritos and bowls, enchiladas and more. The restaurant also boasts a selection of more than 200 tequilas and signature margaritas.

  • High-end Modern Mexican eatery spices up Cass Corridor

High-end Modern Mexican eatery spices up Cass Corridor

A long-abandoned building in the Cass Corridor is now a high-end Modern Mexican eatery serving the traditional flavors of Mexico City and Oaxaca.

Vecino, which means “neighbor” in Spanish, opened on April 19 and is unlike anything in metro Detroit.

Using organic, heirloom corn from Mexico, Vecino makes tortillas, quesadillas, tostadas, sope, and tlayuda through a centuries-old process known as nixtamalization. The result is soft, warm, tender, and flavorful dough.

The menu focuses on seasonal, Michigan ingredients, sourced from local farmers, with the spices and flavors of Mexico. It features bone-in ribeye steak, red snapper, chicken, and vegetables cooked in the kitchen’s wood-fire hearth. Guests also can share carefully prepared plates that include seafood options, mesquite beets, duck confit, and fresh fruit.

The bone-in ribeye is cooked in a wood-fire hearth at Vecino.

The bar features an eclectic collection of agave-based spirits, including small-batch and artisanal tequilas, wine from Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, and plenty of non-alcoholic options.

The kitchen is led by executive chef Ricardo Mojica, a Michigan native who previously worked at Sava’s in Ann Arbor and was the youngest head chef in the history of the nationwide chain P.F. Chang’s when he was 19.

He’s joined by head chef Stephanie Duran, a Culinary Institute of America alum who hails from Texas and cooked at several renowned restaurants in Mexico City and Chicago.

The heart of the kitchen at Vecino is an open-fire hearth.

Co-owners Adriana Jimenez and her husband Lukasz Wietrzynski dreamed up the restaurant in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic put their plans on hold. They had grown bored with their jobs — Wietrzynski was an attorney and Jimenez worked at Industrial Automation — and wanted to do something new and exciting while they’re still young.

Jimenez, a Mexico City native, grew up around restaurants. Her parents owned two Mexican eateries in Waterford and Highland.

“My parents would pick us up from school and we’d go straight to the restaurant, do our homework there and fall asleep there and wake up at home,” Jimenez tells Metro Times. “It was pretty tough on us, but if my parents didn’t have the restaurants, they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do well in life.”

When the couple was searching for a location for their restaurant, they were enamored with their current spot — a corner building on Third and Alexandrine that was built in 1926 and once served as a grocery store and later a pharmacy. The building was missing windows and a roof, but they could see the potential.

“We fell in love with the building,” Jimenez says. “We wanted a corner building. We picked the most difficult building, but we were in love with it.”

They teamed up with Detroit-based designer Colin Tury, who also has a stake in the restaurant.

Inspired by the ambience of restaurants in Mexico City, the minimalist interior is warm and inviting, with earthy tones, terracotta, ceramic tiles, and hand-blown glass light fixtures hanging from the high, angled ceiling. They used local companies, including Donut Shop for the bar stools and custom hooks, and GANAS Manufacturing for the custom millwork and fixtures.

The restaurant seats 66 people and includes a bar with space for an additional 16 people.

Vecino is the fifth fine-dining restaurant to open in a section of the Cass Corridor that had long been vacant and blighted. The others are Selden Standard, SheWolf, Mad Nice, and Vigilante Kitchen and Bar, which is being reimagined.

On a recent weekend, a several-hundred-thousand-dollar McLaren was parked outside Vecino.

“Never thought I’d see that here,” a man said as he walked by.

  • Japanese concept Sorekara to finally open in Baldwin Park in March

Japanese concept Sorekara to finally open in Baldwin Park in March

High-end Japanese restaurant Sorekara is finally set to open in Baldwin Park next month.

The concept by chef William Shen, known for the now-shuttered French-Japanese omakase restaurant Ato in New York City, is set to open March 1 in the old Galeria Restaurant space at 4979 New Broad St.

Shen seeks to encompass something different with this new project, saying Sorekara will embody “the Japanese philosophy of culinary arts re-created with European imagination.”

In an interview with Orlando Weekly back in January 2023, Shen told us he decided to expand to Orlando because of Johnny and Jimmy Tung, the brothers bringing Central Florida’s restaurant scene into the national spotlight with instantly revered spots like Camille and Zaru, both recently added to the 2024 Michelin Guide. The Tungs will also be associated with the new venture.

“I got to know Johnny and Jimmy and developed a close friendship with them,” Shen said back in 2023. “They’re working very hard to put Orlando at the forefront of the culinary scene in this country and I want to be part of this. I want to challenge myself and be a part of this journey.”

Sitting lakefront in Baldwin Park, Sorekara will be inspired by Orlando, drawing inspiration from the many lakes that make Orlando special. Reservations are now available on Sorekara’s website.

  • Ambrogio15, Italian restaurant from San Diego group, opens in Biltmore Friday

Ambrogio15, Italian restaurant from San Diego group, opens in Biltmore Friday

Ambrogio15, an Italian restaurant from an award-winning San Diego-based hospitality group, is set to open at Biltmore Fashion Park on Friday.

Taking inspiration from Milan, the eatery is known for its “signature paper-thin pizzas.” The restaurant has garnered several awards for its pies and wine selection, and this new outpost in Phoenix – its first outside of California – will be upscale, expansive and feature a “futuristic mixology program,” according to Ambrogio15’s website.

Quality ingredients will take center stage at the restaurant.

“A key Italian cultural point that we strongly promote in our restaurants is great respect for the ‘materia prima’ (or the raw ingredient),” co-owner Andrea Burrone said in a news release. “Together with the desire to develop and give voice to Italian culinary regionalities, particularly Milano, we are constantly pushing ourselves to innovate and redefine the boundaries of what is commonly perceived as Italian cuisine.”

Ambrogio15 is the namesake restaurant of a San Diego-based hospitality group, which is opening its first eatery outside of Southern California.

    Ambrogio15

    What’s on Ambrogio15’s menu?

The menu has been crafted by Michelin-starred chef Silvio Salmoiraghi of Italy’s Ristorante Acquerello, who has partnered with Ambrogio15 Restaurant Group since 2020, and Phoenix executive chef Fabio Pizzigoni.

In addition to Milanese-style pizzas, guests can expect “an extensive menu of authentic Italian fare” that includes pastas, steaks, seafood and a raw bar. The announcement teased dishes such as Lobster Pasta, a 30-day dry-aged Porterhouse Steak alla Fiorentina, pizza with fresh burrata and 20-month aged Prosciutto Crudo di Parma, and Scallop Sashimi with saffron risotto and Champagne sauce.

The craft cocktail menu was designed by Marco Russo, whose Milan speakeasy 1930 is among the World’s 50 Best Bars. Drink selections will also feature “a globe-straddling selection of boutique natural wines inside a glass-fronted wine tower carved right into the heart of the restaurant,” according to the release.

“Developing our concept, we wanted to stand out through our selection of wines,” said Giacomo Pizzigoni, co-owner of the restaurant and cousin of the executive chef. “We love to work with winemakers who are passionate about their terroirs and craft wines that will surprise guests and help them discover new perspectives on this very hands-on and sensorial approach to winemaking.”

    Ambrogio15

    What’s the vibe?

The 5,000 square-foot space is “soaring,” with a “sleek and wood-lined space,” that likewise takes inspiration from the modern Italian city from which its owners hail.

“This is a neighborhood known for being luxurious, stylish and discerning, which is exactly what defines the look and feel of Ambrogio15,” Burrone said.

Ambrogio15 also boasts a 12-person private dining room with a dedicated bar, which will host a “Chef’s Table Experience,” of an eight-course tasting menu paired with natural wines or cocktails, drawing on inspiration from its sibling restaurant in La Jolla, California, Ambrogio by Acquerello.

The restaurant will serve dinner nightly, and reservations are now open. The team plans to add lunch, weekend brunch, happy hour and late-night dining in the future.
