  • Trump backs away from military force, says U.S. has ‘framework’ for Greenland’s future

    [ad_1]

President Trump retreated Wednesday from his most serious threats toward Denmark, easing transatlantic tensions and lifting Wall Street after rejecting the prospect he would use military force to annex Greenland, a Danish territory and the world’s largest island.

Instead, the United States struck a “framework” agreement in talks with NATO’s secretary general regarding the future of Greenland, “and in fact, the whole Arctic region,” Trump wrote on social media. He did not immediately provide details on the contents of the plan.

The whiplash of developments followed weeks of escalating threats from the president to control Greenland by any means necessary — including by force, if left with no other choice.

Now, “the military’s not on the table,” Trump told reporters at the economic forum in Switzerland, acknowledging sighs of relief throughout the room.

“I don’t think it will be necessary,” he said. “I really don’t. I think people are going to use better judgment.”

It was a turn of events that came as welcome news in Nuuk, where signs hang in storefronts and kitchen windows rejecting American imperialism.

“It’s difficult to say what are negotiating tactics, and what the foundation is for him saying all of this,” said Finn Meinel, an attorney born and raised in the Greenlandic capital. “It could be that joint pressure from the EU and NATO countries has made an impact, as well as the economic numbers in the states. Maybe that has had an influence.”

In his speech at Davos, Trump took note of the market turmoil his threats against Greenland had caused entering the conference. Announcing the agreement framework on social media Wednesday, he said he would pause punitive tariffs planned against longstanding European allies that had refused to support his demands.

Prominent world leaders — including from Canada, France and the United Kingdom, among Washington’s closest allies — had warned earlier this week that Trump’s militant threats against a fellow NATO member were ushering in a new era of global order accommodating a less reliable United States.

For years, Trump has called for U.S. ownership over Greenland due to its strategic position in the Arctic Circle, where ice melting due to climate change is making way for a new era of competition with Russia and China. An Arctic conflict, the president says, will require a robust U.S. presence there.

While the president rejects climate change and its perils as a hoax, he has embraced the opportunities that may come with the melting of Greenland’s ice sheet, the world’s largest after Antarctica, including the opening of new shipping lanes and defense positions.

The United States already enjoys broad freedom to deploy any defense assets it sees fit across the island, raising questions in Europe over Trump’s fixation on outright sovereignty over the land.

“We want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won’t give it. We’ve never asked for anything else,” Trump said, addressing members of the NATO alliance.

“I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force,” Trump said. But Europe still has a choice. “You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative,” he continued, “or you can say no, and we will remember.”

The day before Trump’s speech, allies warned about a “rupture” in a global order in which the United States could be relied upon as a force of good. Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, in a speech Tuesday characterized Trump’s push to acquire Greenland as an example of why “the old order is not coming back.”

Trump apparently took note of Carney’s remarks, and told the crowd on Wednesday that Canada “should be grateful.”

“But they are not,” Trump said. “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

The president struck a similar tone with his demands for Greenland, repeatedly characterizing the United States as a “great power” compared with Denmark in its ability to protect the Arctic territory. At one point, he cited the American military’s role in World War II to justify his demands, telling the eastern Swiss audience that, “without us, you’d all be speaking German, or a little Japanese perhaps.”

It was a slight carried forward by the president’s treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, who derided Copenhagen for its decision to divest from U.S. treasuries. “Denmark’s investment in U.S. treasury bonds like Denmark itself is irrelevant,” the secretary said.

In several instances, Trump framed the transatlantic alliance as one that benefits other countries more than the United States.

“We will be with NATO 100%, but I’m not sure they will be there for us,” Trump said. But NATO Secretary Gen. Mark Rutte responded to the concern in their meeting, noting that the alliance’s Article 5 commitment to joint defense has only been invoked once — by the United States, after the September 11th attacks. “Let me tell you: they will,” Rutte said.

But Trump expanded on his thinking over Greenland in his speech to the summit, describing his fixation on Greenland as “psychological,” and questioning why the United States would come to the island’s defense if its only investment was a licensing agreement.

“There’s no sign of Denmark there. And I say that with great respect for Denmark, whose people I love, whose leaders are very good,” Trump said. “It’s the United States alone that can protect this giant, massive land – this giant piece of ice – develop it, and improve it, and make it so that it’s good for Europe, and safe for Europe, and good for us.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom was among the people in the audience reacting to Trump’s remarks in real time. The president’s speech, he told CNN afterward, was “remarkably boring” and “remarkably insignificant.”

“He was never going invade Greenland. It was never real,” Newsom said. “That was always a fake.”

  • How To Look Cute This Football Season

How To Look Cute This Football Season

    [ad_1]

As a girl who’s a die-hard football fan, it’s tough out here. I have men who don’t believe that I actually follow the sport and women who complain about having to watch the game in general. Football has been a male-dominated territory for a long time, but Taylor Swift is making groundbreaking changes.

With her regular attendance at Kansas City Chiefs games in support of her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, Swift is basically guaranteeing that women will be there for NFL games now…even if it’s only to catch a glimpse of Miss Swift herself.

And even if you’re not a Swiftie, more and more women are watching football more than ever. Whether it’s because your father, brother, uncle, friend, or boyfriend forced you to watch alongside them…or because you and your gal pals started an all female fantasy football league just for fun.

Where I live, Sundays are great days to go out and socialize. Bars are packed with people watching the games, so even if you’re not a fan it’s a fantastic excuse to get out of your house.

Morning Consult Brand Intelligence reported that, in December 2023, 64% of Gen-Z and millennial women held the NFL in a favorable view. The interest surrounding football goes beyond Swift now, and the NFL must do something to continue to capitalize on that.

Yes, it helps that heartthrobs like Joe Burrow exist simply to keep women interested. But what’s more interesting is that women are starting to care about the game itself.

I’m in an all girls fantasy league, where almost no one cared about football beforehand. However now, everyone is super invested in their teams.

But even more critical is looking good during the football season. For so long, the NFL neglected their women’s merch. Even more egregious, all the team apparel for women was hideous.

However, since football has turned over a new leaf…things have improved significantly. Now, it’s about looking trendy this 2024 football season. And I’m here to make sure you do just that.

Here are my favorite women’s NFL apparel picks for 2024:

    Abercrombie

Abercrombie genuinely has some of the best NFL apparel for both men and women. It’s all on-trend, vintage in the right way, and a fan favorite. Seriously, every girl I know has one of the NFL sweatshirts from Abercrombie.

My roommate has this sweater and swears it changed her life because it’s so incredibly soft. Plus, the designs for your designated team are actually cute. Whether you like the quarterback because he’s handsome or because he can escape a sack like a magician…these sweaters are a staple this football season.

There was a time where only a few stores carried women’s NFL apparel. Since we’re in better days, plenty of women-focused stores now sell NFL gear that you’d actually wear.

This American Eagle Dolphins crewneck is oversized in the best way. Fine to wear with baggy jeans, leggings, a nice skort, or just biker shorts a la Princess Diana. An oversized crewneck is a staple for your closet…so make it NFL-themed.

    Junk Food

Junk Food is the go-to for graphic tees and sweatshirts. So it should be easy to find something for your NFL team on this site, because everything is simply adorable.

This thermal is outstanding for everyday wear during the colder months when you’ll be rooting for your fave team (in this case, the Eagles) while still serving looks. Not a fan of the Birds? Don’t fret, they have every team on this site.

    NFL Shop

Vintage is very in right now, which is why this Buffalo Bills sweater by Tommy Hilfiger is a must-have. With a double v-neck and the red, white, and blue trim, this sweatshirt gives the perfect dose of nostalgia.

Order one a few sizes bigger than your normal and you have an excellent oversized sweatshirt for the fall!

    New Era

The perfect NFL baby tee does exist, and it’s sold at New Era. With a simple embroidered cursive font and logo, this baby tee doesn’t have a lot going on. But it works with jeans and a leather jacket for a cute gameday fit.

It’s one of the most popular NFL apparel pieces this season for a reason, so get it while you can!

  • The Ozempic Revolution Is Stuck

    The Ozempic Revolution Is Stuck

    [ad_1]

Millions more Americans are now eligible for obesity drugs. But the injections remain maddeningly hard to find.

Illustration by The Atlantic. Source: Getty.

The irony undergirding the new wave of obesity drugs is that they initially weren’t created for obesity at all. The weight loss spurred by Ozempic, a diabetes drug in the class of so-called GLP-1 agonists, gave way to Wegovy—the same drug, repackaged for obesity. Zepbound, another medication, soon followed. Now these drugs have a new purpose: heart health.

On Friday, the FDA approved the use of Wegovy for reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death in adults who are overweight and have cardiovascular disease. The move had been anticipated since the publication of a landmark trial in the fall, which showed the drug’s profound effects on cardiovascular  health. The decision could usher in a new era where GLP-1 drugs become mainstream, opening up access to millions of Americans who previously didn’t qualify for Wegovy.

Some of the obstacles stopping people from getting the drug may also begin to crumble. Insurance companies commonly deny coverage of Wegovy because obesity is seen as a cosmetic concern rather than a medical one, but that argument may not hold up for cardiovascular disease. “This new FDA indication is HUGE,” Katherine Saunders, an obesity-medicine physician at Weill Cornell Medicine, told me in an email. Wegovy may soon be within reach for many more Americans—that is, if they can find it.

In practice, Wegovy is maddeningly hard to get hold of. Shortages of injectable semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, have been ongoing since March 2022; currently, most doses of Wegovy are in limited supply. As the popularity of semaglutide has skyrocketed, demand has completely outstripped the capacity of its manufacturer, Novo Nordisk. The drug comes in injection pens containing a glass vial; “these are not easy products to make,” Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, the CEO of Novo Nordisk, said in August. In response to the shortages, the company withheld its supply of lower Wegovy doses last year. Because treatment on the medication must begin in low doses, this meant that new patients who wanted to start on Wegovy functionally couldn’t. In January, the company began “more than doubling the amount of the lower-dose strengths” of the drug, a Novo Nordisk spokesperson told me, and it plans to gradually increase overall supply throughout the rest of the year.

The ongoing shortages have left providers and patients feeling stuck. “It is devastating to prescribe a lifesaving medication for a patient and then find out it’s not covered or we can’t locate supply,” Saunders said. Doctors are scrambling to make do with what’s available. Ivania Rizo, an endocrinologist at Boston Medical Center, told me she has had to turn to older GLP-1 drugs such as Saxenda to “bridge” patients to higher doses of Wegovy, although now that is in shortage too. Patients can spend each day calling pharmacy after pharmacy in search of one with Wegovy in stock, Rizo said. In desperation, some have turned to versions of the drug that are custom-made by compounding pharmacies with little oversight, despite the FDA expressing concerns about them. The shots are supposed to be taken weekly, but others have attempted to stretch their doses beyond that.

That the new FDA approval could very mainstream obesity drugs may create long-needed pressure to help resolve these shortages. It makes clear that Wegovy is a lifesaving medication not only for people with obesity but also for those with cardiovascular disease—the leading cause of death in the U.S.—putting the impetus on Novo Nordisk to ramp up production. But in the short term, the access issues may persist. “The new approval is very likely to worsen shortages, because the demand for Wegovy will continue to climb—now at an even faster pace,” Saunders said.

If patients think they’re stuck now, they’re about to feel entrenched. Wegovy is the only obesity drug that has been approved to reduce the risk of heart attacks, but none of its competitors is easily available either. Supplies of certain dosages of Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro, a diabetes drug whose active ingredient is sold for obesity as Zepbound, are limited, and shortages are expected later this year. “We need supply to increase dramatically,” Saunders said. Both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have invested heavily in expanding production capacity, but some of the new plants won’t open until 2029.

For all of its advantages, the FDA approval has a sobering effect on the unrelenting hype around GLP-1s. So much of the excitement around obesity drugs has focused on the future, as dozens of pharmaceutical companies develop more powerful drugs, and commentators imagine a world without obesity. In the process, the issues of the present have gone overlooked. More drugs won’t make much of a difference if the drugs themselves are out of reach.

  • Introducing The American Royal Couple: Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce

Introducing The American Royal Couple: Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce

    [ad_1]

Well ladies and gentlemen, it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Taylor Swift, after almost a decade, is dating someone born in the United States of America. And it’s none other than star Kansas City Chiefs tight end and Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce.

Rumors about the pairing been circulating for a few weeks. They started when Travis Kelce went on his podcast —
New Heights, with his brother Jason of the Philadelphia Eagles — and said he made Taylor a friendship bracelet with his number on it at her concert, but could never get it to her.

Normally, you’d think the story ends there. Tough luck for Travis, but no.
Then, Jason Kelce went on Philadelphia sports radio WIP and confirmed the two were definitely an item. And finally, Taylor Swift broke the internet when she was spotted at the Chiefs-Chicago Bears game in Kansas City this weekend, next to Travis’s mother, Donna Kelce.

I’ve been wondering for years how to get women into football…it turns out all you need to do is get Taylor Swift to date one of the players. Easy enough, now Swifties all over my socials are musing what a “tight end” is (he is supposed to both block and score points) and why scoring looks so easy (it isn’t, he’s just that good).

    Who is Travis Kelce?

Born in 1989 (I’m sure Taylor is aware of the number), Kelce is widely acknowledged as one of the best tight ends of all time — even surpassing former New England Patriot, and Tom Brady’s right-hand-man, Rob Gronkowski.

Drafted into the NFL in 2013, Travis credits his brother Jason for saving his football career. Travis, on scholarship at the University of Cincinnati, tested positive for marijuana and was kicked off the team before Jason got him back on track and playing football after a one-year suspension.

Now, Travis plays alongside arguably the new GOAT quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, in Kansas City. The duo have won two Super Bowls together, most recently in 2023 against Jason Kelce and the Philadelphia Eagles…the only brother duo to ever play in the Super Bowl.

He confirmed that he asked Taylor to come see him by saying he saw how she rocked Arrowhead, and wanted to know if she wanted to come see how he rocks it. Travis scored a touchdown in her honor.

Travis is known for his style, always pulling up in a lavish gameday fit. Yesterday was a blue and white jacket set that fits Taylor’s upcoming
1989 (Taylor’s Version) theme…so much so that the Kid Super renamed the set to “1989 Bedroom Painting Set” after spotting Travis wearing it.

Are Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Actually Dating?

All signs are pointing to yes as Taylor and Travis were seen leaving Arrowhead Stadium on September 24, 2023 (12 years on the day that Taylor performed there for
Speak Now) in Kelce’s convertible last night. It’s one of Taylor’s more public dates in the past, but we are here for America’s princess dating football royalty.

Apparently, Travis even rented out the restaurant for the Chiefs afterparty and their date! While we wait for more, shop styles similar to the
New Era jacket T-Swift was wearing here.
