Netflix delays Prince Harry and Meghan documentary as ‘The Crown’ comes under fire – National | Globalnews.ca

Outrage over Netflix‘s fictional series The Crown reportedly has the streaming giant a bit “rattled,” to the point where they’re planning to postpone an upcoming documentary about defected British Royal Family members Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Deadline reports that Netflix execs think “it would be foolhardy to stream The Crown in November followed by the Harry and Meghan documentary in December.”

The Crown, a fictionalized drama that follows the sometimes-true, sometimes-exaggerated history of the British Royal Family, has raised eyebrows and ire amongst both the public and some of the show’s real-life subjects, after trailers for the upcoming episodes allegedly paint a season full of invention and insensitivity.

Former British Prime Minister John Major is one of the people addressing the issue, saying The Crown‘s portrayal of the then-Prince Charles trying to recruit him in a scheme to dethrone the queen was “malicious” and “a barrel-load of nonsense.”

Deadline reports that particular episode, titled Queen Victoria Syndrome, was based on a poll conducted by the Sunday Times in 1991, which argued that Queen Elizabeth had grown stale as a monarch and should abdicate to her first-born son.

The barrage of criticism has forced Netflix to issue a rare defence of the show, reminding people that it’s a “fictional dramatization.”

A spokeswoman for The Crown told the BBC: “The Crown has always been presented as a drama based on historical events. Series five is a fictional dramatization, imagining what could have happened behind closed doors during a significant decade for the royal family—one that has already been scrutinised and well-documented by journalists, biographers and historians.”

The Daily Beast points out that Netflix has refused to add a disclaimer to the show’s opening credits, warning viewers of the show’s fictional status; because of this many believe that the show’s events are overwhelmingly accurate.

Although no broadcast date was ever set for the untitled documentary series, produced by Netflix and Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Productions, Netflix had said several times this year it intended to run The Crown and the documentary series back-to-back.

According to Cosmopolitan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex allowed camera crews into their life for more than a year, and were filmed while they travelled internationally. The magazine reports that the couple is “expected to talk extensively about other members of the Royal Family, including King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales.”

The Crown is grappling with a few overlapping real-life royal issues going into its Season 5 release next month — the show is trying to be respectful following the queen’s death, and is also getting set to shoot scenes that tell the story of Princess Diana’s death.

Prince Harry has largely remained mum on The Crown, despite his very vocal disdain for the press and photographers.

He told James Corden in an interview: “It’s fictional. But it’s loosely based on the truth. Of course it’s not strictly accurate, but it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle — the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else — what can come from that.”

He continued: “I’m way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family, or my wife or myself, because it’s the difference between fiction—take it how you will—and being reported on as fact because you’re supposedly news. I have a real issue with that.”

The pushed-back date on the documentary comes after news earlier this month that a tell-all memoir penned by Prince Harry and scheduled to come out this fall will also be delayed.

The “accurate and wholly truthful” account of his life is said to be delayed so the prince can reconsider some of the content in the wake of his grandmother’s death, as well as address the funeral and surrounding events as he returned to the U.K. with his wife to be close to his grieving family.

  • Why Park Ji-Hu Enjoyed Playing The Little Sister In ‘Little Women’

Why Park Ji-Hu Enjoyed Playing The Little Sister In ‘Little Women’

    [ad_1]

Park Ji-hu was drawn to her role in the Korean drama Little Women because she was fascinated by her character’s efforts to change her life for the better. That character, the artistically gifted student In-hye, is the youngest of three sisters. Her older sisters, played by Nam Ji-hyun and Kim Go-eun, struggle to make her life comfortable, often at their own expense, but such sacrifices make In-hye feel guilty. To change her life she makes some ill-advised choices.

“I felt sorry for her as she tries not to be a burden to her sisters,” said Park. “I hoped to grow alongside her.”

Because In-hye desperately wants a better life, she spends much of her time at the home of her wealthy friend Hyo-rin. Her friend’s family is seductively glamorous and powerful, everything her own family is not. However, In-hye doesn’t realize how dangerous Hyo-rin’s family is and how they might threaten her sisters.

“In-hye has always sought a luxurious life and thought that she could live that life if she went to live with Hyo-rin,” said Park. “I think this immature and foolish thought was shaped by her deprived childhood and her desire to escape poverty.”

The 12-episode drama is inspired by Louisa May Alcott’s story of sisterhood, but also by the kind of stories Alcott preferred to write: tales of intrigue, murder and mystery. With a rapid succession of surprising plot twists, the drama provided a fun set to work on.

“The mood at the set was wonderful,” said Park. “And I was able to trust my director and fellow actors wholeheartedly. I truly learned a lot.”

As well as playing the youngest sister, Park was treated like the youngest sister on set. Kim Go-eun and Nam Ji-hyun took good care of her.

“They called me a nickname referring to the youngest child and cared for me as if I was small and precious,” she said. “Thanks to them, I enjoyed being on the site very much.”

Although each on-screen sister demonstrated their own charms, she was equally fond of both.

“I cannot say I like one over the other,” said Park. “Both are family and on my side more than anyone else. I would love them no matter what.”

Park made her acting debut in a short film at the age of 12. She had minor drama and film roles before starring in the award-winning indie film House of Hummingbird and her performance in that film won her a Best Actress Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. Her international popularity grew after her role as a high school student in the zombie hit All of Us Are Dead.

“My original dream was to become an announcer,” said Park. “I started acting by chance when an acting academy suggested that I should try it. Out of curiosity, I started it out as a hobby. But as I was filming the movie House of Hummingbird, I realized that I wanted to pursue acting. I loved meeting and talking to various people in the field and learning about myself in the process. These are the reasons that I love acting.”

Park plans to study theater and film at university, but will also appear in the disaster film Concrete Utopia, starring Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-joon and Park Bo-young. Being a high school student and acting at the same time has not always been easy, but Park was determined. Little Women was her first TV drama after graduating high school.

“I worked harder because both were things I had to do and I did not want to neglect either one,” she said. “I am proud to say that I safely graduated high school.”

  • Netflix to offer discounted, ad-supported option

Netflix to offer discounted, ad-supported option

    [ad_1]

Netflix next month will unveil the first version of its video streaming service with ads, giving cost-conscious viewers a chance to watch most of its shows at a steep discount in exchange for putting up with commercial interruptions.

The ad-supported service is scheduled to debut Nov. 3 as Netflix tries to reverse a drop in subscribers. It will cost $7 per month in the U.S., a 55% markdown from Netflix’s most popular $15.50-per-month plan, which is ad-free.

Netflix’s ad-supported option will also be rolling out in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain and the U.K., according to a Thursday post by the company’s chief operating officer, Greg Peters.

Besides putting up with roughly four to five minutes of ads during each hour of viewing, Netflix subscribers who sign up for the cheaper service also won’t be able to download TV shows and movies to watch when their devices are offline. Peters also said a “limited” amount of programming available on the commercial-free service won’t be on the ad-supported version because of licensing issues.

Netflix’s 15-year-old streaming service has until now been commercial free, but the Los Gatos, California, company decided to head in a new direction six months ago after reporting its first loss in subscribers in more than a decade.

The customer erosion worsened a wrenching decline in its stock price that has wiped up more than $200 billion in shareholder wealth during the past 11 months. The shares rallied after Thursday’s announcement, but still have lost about two-thirds of their value since reaching their peak last November when the streaming service was still growing.

Through the first half of this year, Netflix lost 1.2 million subscribers, leaving it with nearly 221 million. Management in July predicted it would regain about 1 million of those subscribers during the summer months. The numbers for the July-September period are scheduled to be disclosed Tuesday.

Netflix is betting the low-priced option with ads will be particularly popular at a time that persistently high inflation is pressuring millions of households to curb their spending, particularly on discretionary items such as video streaming. The streaming market also has become crowded with tougher competition from the likes of Amazon, Apple and Walt Disney Co., which also is preparing to offer an ad-supported version of its service soon.

  • ‘Wendell & Wild’ Trailer Released, Featuring Key And Peele

‘Wendell & Wild’ Trailer Released, Featuring Key And Peele

    [ad_1]

The official trailer for the long-awaited Netflix movie Wendell & Wild has finally dropped. The movie is a claymation comedy horror starring the famous sketch duo of Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele. In the director’s chair, we have Henry Sellick, famous for other movies in a similar vein, such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline

Wendell & Wild itself is about a young girl who’s able to communicate directly with a pair of demons who seem to have a dark agenda. Lyric Ross plays Kat Elliot, a 13-year-old girl who doesn’t quite fit in. While she struggles to navigate middle school, she’s also dealing with literal demons, who implore Kat to summon them from the spirit world, and into our material plane.

Netflix’s official synopsis for the film is as follows:

“From the delightfully wicked minds of Henry Selick and producer Jordan Peele, comes ‘Wendell & Wild,’ an animated tale about scheming demon brothers Wendell (Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (Peele) – who enlist the aid of Kat Elliot – a tough teen with a load of guilt – to summon them to the Land of the Living. But what Kat demands in return leads to a brilliantly bizarre and comedic adventure like no other, an animated fantasy that defies the law of life and death, all told through the handmade artistry of stop motion.”

The movie has been in the works for awhile, and only recently had its premiere. It was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, and critics have really enjoyed it. The film will show in select theaters for a few weeks, before hitting Netflix on Oct. 28.

You can learn more about Wendell and Wild here.

  • ‘Wednesday’ Trailer Reveals Who Plays Uncle Fester In Addams Family Spinoff Series

‘Wednesday’ Trailer Reveals Who Plays Uncle Fester In Addams Family Spinoff Series

    [ad_1]

Everybody snap twice for Netflix’s casting department.

No Addams family story could be told without Uncle Fester, but fans have yet to see a glimpse of the iconic character for the upcoming spinoff “Wednesday,” which is set to debut on the streaming service in November.

The series has kept the identity of the actor playing the role under wraps for months amid much speculation (and even rumors that a certain controversial star might appear), but finally all has been revealed.

In the official trailer, which debuted during a New York Comic Con panel on Saturday, Fred Armisen is fully transformed into the gentle-ish giant, looking nearly unrecognizable with the character’s signature bald head and sunken eyes.

The “Saturday Night Live” alum reportedly makes an appearance toward the end of the eight-episode first season, which follows the titular character (Jenna Ortega) through her teenage years after she enrolls at the suitably spooky Nevermore Academy.

In the electrifying clip, Armisen’s Fester comes to his niece’s aid, telling her that he prefers to “travel incognito” before the two drive off in a polka-dotted motorcycle and sidecar.

Speaking with Vanity Fair in a recent interview, Armisen said he shaved his head for the role but was allowed to keep his eyebrows.

“They really did such a great job with the makeup and everything. I had no eyebrows. It was prosthetics over my eyebrows to give me that look. But I think that bald caps don’t look great all the time, so I was hoping to just make it that much more convincing,” he said.

“He’s weird. The character in general is just so unexpected. It’s not just one thing,” Armisen added. “He’s a mix of being a weirdo, and he also seems happy. He’s a happy monster. There’s nothing grumpy about him.”

The role has, of course, been made famous by actors Jackie Coogan and Christopher Lloyd, who played the character in the original sitcom and 1990s films, respectively. Armisen, however, said he’s not looking to reinvent Uncle Fester, but instead wants to build off the beloved past portrayals.

“I wasn’t thinking in terms of what I can bring to it to make it different. I thought, No, I want the Jackie Coogan version. That’s the version I can hear. Christopher Lloyd’s is amazing too. I wanted to just keep it there,” he said. “I didn’t have any designs on, ‘Well, now I’m going to add this element…’ No, this is someone who likes wearing those big coats, and is enjoying his own eccentricities.”

Joining Armisen in the series are Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán, who play Morticia and Gomez Addams, as well as Isaac Ordonez as Wednesday’s brother Pugsley. Christina Ricci, who starred as Wednesday in 1991’s “The Addams Family” and its sequel “Addams Family Values,” plays an original character named Marilyn Thornhill in the series.

“Wednesday,” however, centers on Ortega, as the eponymous Addams daughter “attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore,” per the official synopsis.

Director Tim Burton will helm four of the eight episodes of the series, which will be overseen by showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who will also serve as writers and executive producers.

“Wednesday” arrives on Netflix on Nov. 23. Watch the new trailer below.

  • ‘RRR’ Launches Oscars Best Picture Campaign

‘RRR’ Launches Oscars Best Picture Campaign

    [ad_1]

RRR is monumental. Not just as a foreign film, but as a film in general. For those unfamiliar, RRR is an Indian film which tells the story of two actual historical figures living under British rule. While the characters are real, the film is thoroughly embellished. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t have some of the insane action scenes, the excellent musical numbers, or the expertly choreographed dance sequences.

The film has been a hit with both audiences and critics in the United States since its debut earlier in the year, and now the film’s producers are pushing for it to be nominated for Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Despite the absolute spectacle that is RRR, it’s facing some pretty heavy odds. Only one film that wasn’t in English has ever won an Oscar, that being Bong Joon-ho’s tale of class warfare, Parasite. For whatever reason, it seems like Americans really have an issue watching films if they’re required to read subtitles. Maybe it’s oversaturation in the Hollywood market, which means that most people don’t go out of their way to watch foreign films.

Whatever the outcome at the Academy Awards, RRR is completely worth seeing. If you can’t find it in some local arthouse theater or something like that, your best bet is to hop onto Netflix. It’s currently streaming there, albeit only in a Hindi-language version. Still, it’s better than not seeing the movie at all.

  • Trailer: Guillermo del Toro Gets His Own Horror Series, ‘Cabinet Of Curiosities’

Trailer: Guillermo del Toro Gets His Own Horror Series, ‘Cabinet Of Curiosities’

    [ad_1]

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet Of Curiosities got a new trailer, just in time to kick off October. The series debuts on Netflix on October 25. From then on, two new episodes will be released every day until October 28 for a total of eight episodes. The show is an anthology horror series, featuring original stories and adaptations. One episode in specific is an adaptation of two H.P. Lovecraft stories, Pickman’s Model and Dreams In The Witch House.

The series also managed to bring on some serious directorial talent. We have Jennifer Kent, the director of The Babadook, Ana Lily Amirpou, who directed A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, and Panos Cosmatos, the director of Mandy. Actors include new and old talents, from Peter Weller to Eric André … and that’s just in one of the eight episodes.

The trailer itself shows a good variety of different types of horror. Some segments seem to be rooted in classic gothic horror, some of them are cosmic horror, and some are just sheer body horror. One thing that’s on full display in the trailer is Guillermo del Toro’s penchant for gothic imagery. It definitely has that signature vibe. Beautiful, old houses with secrets, mysterious tomes, gnarled forests and snowy graveyards; pretty much anything you could want out of a Guillermo del Toro horror project.

Here is the show’s official synopsis:

In CABINET OF CURIOSITIES, acclaimed Academy Award-winning filmmaker and creator, executive producer and co-showrunner Guillermo del Toro has curated a collection of unprecedented and genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror. From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, these eight equally sophisticated and sinister tales (including two original stories by del Toro) are brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by del Toro.

Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin Take Listeners Inside the Interrogation Room to Investigate True Stories of False Confessions

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 19, 2020

Why do innocent people confess to crimes they did not commit? On Feb. 19, Lava for Good Podcasts, the team behind the hugely popular podcast Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom, debuts a powerful new audio series that explores – and answers – this question, which lies at the heart of hundreds of wrongful convictions.

Hosted by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, co-directors at Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions and central figures in the smash-hit Netflix docuseries Making a Murderer, the Wrongful Conviction: False Confessions podcast reveals 12 true stories of false confessions. Using real interrogation audio, Nirider and Drizin chronicle stories of everyday people who falsely confessed to crimes they did not commit – placing listeners as close to the nightmare of being wrongly accused as anyone would ever wish to be. And then, Nirider adds, “We bring you inside the fight to exonerate these innocent people.”

Each episode starts with a tragic crime – and the misguided investigation that followed. Nirider and Drizin recount stories ranging from a Brooklyn teen who falsely confessed to killing his own mother to an innocent New Zealander who was wrongly imprisoned for rape and murder while the actual rapist continued his serial crime spree. Listeners will hear interrogators use mind-bending techniques – death threats, lies about the evidence, and fact-feeding – to extract false confessions from innocents. In many cases, interrogators even ignored crystal-clear recantations, as when Virginia teen Robert Davis told police: “I am lying to you, full front to your face.”

In each case, investigators used confessions to obtain wrongful convictions despite compelling evidence of innocence, like DNA evidence that conclusively identified the real perpetrator. Nirider and Drizin bring listeners inside each person’s fight for freedom, spotlighting the sometimes unlikely heroes – from dissident police officers to victims’ family members – who helped right these wrongs against all odds. “You won’t be able to forget these captivating stories,” Drizin said, “and we hope you’ll join our shared fight for justice.”

The series comes from Lava for Good Podcasts, the team behind Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom, which features the tragic stories of men and women who have spent decades in prison for crimes they didn’t commit. Jason Flom, the executive producer of the False Confessions podcast, is the founder of Lava Media, which includes Lava Music as well as Lava for Good Podcasts. As a longtime supporter and board member of numerous respected criminal justice reform organizations, Flom has spent over 25 years seeking justice for the wrongfully convicted.

Wrongful Conviction: False Confessions is available through the same feed and platforms where fans already listen and subscribe to the Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom series. Both series are now in a single feed named Wrongful Conviction Podcasts. Find Wrongful Conviction: False Confessions at www.wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com.

Wrongful Conviction: False Confessions, Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom, and an upcoming slate of Wrongful Conviction Presents podcasts are produced by Lava for Good™ Podcasts in association with Signal Co. No1 and PRX.

The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula Moves to Netflix

    [ad_1]

Following a massively successful third season, the groundbreaking drag horror reality TV competition finds a new home on Netflix

    Press Release

    updated: Nov 6, 2019

Drag, Filth, Horror & Glamour! These are the tenants of the Boulet Brothers’ Dragula, the hit underground reality competition show that (following a hugely successful third season) just found its new home on the world’s top streaming platform: Netflix.

The show is taking both queer and horror audiences by storm, as the third season of the series broke viewer records all over the world. After trending on Amazon Prime for several weeks, it was the #1 purchased reality show on iTunes in the U.S. & U.K. for several weeks in September, and accounted for the top five viewed shows on OUTtv overall, outperforming the previous season by 196%.

The show is created and hosted by drag horror icons the Boulet Brothers who (each season) challenge eleven drag artists from around the world to compete in a wild, no holds barred drag competition to win $25,000.00 and the crown of Dragula – the World’s Next Drag Supermonster. The show has the cast competing in all things required of a drag superstar – costume creation, special effects makeup, live performance and acting abilities, but it also takes these traditional challenges one step further. For the contestants who end up on the bottom each week, they must face terrifying and gruesome physical and mental challenges to prove they have the guts and glamour to remain in the competition. From jumping out of airplanes to eating live spiders, getting terrible tattoos and taking lie detector tests, the show presents drag in a way that has never been seen on television before and audiences can’t get enough.

This season the Boulet Brothers were also joined by an all-star lineup of celebrity judges from the worlds of horror, entertainment and music including Henry Rollins (Black Flag), Bonnie Aarons (The Nun), Millie Shapiro (Hereditary), Rachel True (The Craft), Danielle Harris (Halloween 4, 5), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Michael Varrati (Dead for Filth) and Darren Stein (Jawbreaker).

Netflix and Boulet Brothers Productions announced the show’s move to Netflix on Halloween night at midnight, ushering in a new audience and era for the show.

The following day Fangoria Magazine dubbed The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula “Required Horror Viewing,” adding “Nothing about Dragula feels safe, and that’s because it’s a reminder that much like horror, drag is as political and unsafe as it gets.‍”

Billboard Magazine added “The Boulet Brothers already made history with the casting of the latest season of their competition reality series Dragula when they cast Landon Cider,” adding “now they’re making history again by crowning him the winner.”

The “Boulet Brothers Dragula” is now streaming on Netflix in the United States. For more information or for interview requests with the hosts or cast of the Boulet Brothers Dragula, contact Ian Devoglaer at ian@bouletbrothersdragula.com

But, little do they know, Bark and his mean team of Kano, Roland and Julio, have a new scheme to disrupt Pup Star and steal Christmas. With Roland acting as the new Santa and Bark forcing people to pay for Santa’s goodwill, the holiday spirit is at an all-time low. When the pups find themselves in the North Pole, it’s up to them to save not only the Pup Star special but the Christmas spirit itself and discover the true meaning of the holiday. With a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Colorado State University and BAs in Theater and Psychology from Middlebury College, Tasha is the principal of The Eurich Group, a boutique executive development firm that helps companies — from start-ups to the Fortune 100 — succeed by improving the effectiveness of their leaders and teams.

She has contributed to the Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, and CNBC, and her work has been featured in Forbes, Fox Business, and Fast Company, as well as peer-reviewed journals. She has been named a “Top 100 Thought Leader” by Trust Across America, a “Leader to Watch” by the American Management Association, and one of Denver Business Journal’s “40 Under 40.”

Tasha’s first book, Bankable Leadership, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list in 2013 and has since become a popular resource for managers and executives who don’t want to choose between making their employees happy and producing bottom-line results for their business. Her second book, INSIGHT, delves into the connection between our self-awareness — what she calls the meta-skill of the twenty-first century — and our performance and success, both in and out of the workplace. Fortune calls it a “sprawling exploration of the psychic frailty that leads to self-delusion and self-aggrandizement, and — importantly — a compassionate, helpful guide for avoiding that path (or reversing it).” Her TEDx talk has been viewed more than a million times.
