When it comes to long-term love in the spotlight, few stories are as captivating as Nelly and Ashanti. The hip-hop and R&B power couple has spent over two decades in the public eye, navigating a journey that has taken them from early 2000s icons to a modern-day blueprint for “spinning the block.” This week, as Valentine’s Day excitement swept through the industry, the couple shared a spicy secret for keeping the spark alive.

Catching up with the pair on the red carpet of the star-studded Fanatics Super Bowl party in San Francisco, a photographer asked the most pressing question of the evening: “What’s the secret to a great Valentine’s for you two?”
While most celebrity couples might offer a safe answer about candlelit dinners or thoughtful jewelry, Nelly and Ashanti weren’t interested in being politically correct. With a mischievous grin, Ashanti blurted out the truth: “The bedroom!” Her husband didn’t skip a beat, giving a telling stare and an affirming pat on the butt that confirmed they are very much on the same page.

The candidness of Nelly and Ashanti is a testament to the deep comfort they’ve found in their second chapter. As previously reported, their legendary love story began in 2003 when they first met at a Grammy Awards press conference. Ashanti famously recalled that Nelly asked for her autograph as a joke, and while it took him a long time to actually get her phone number, they eventually became one of the most beloved couples of the era.
After a decade together, the two surprisingly split in 2013 and spent nearly ten years apart. However, the pull of their connection proved too strong to ignore. By late 2023, the world was thrilled to see them reunite, and they moved with a new sense of urgency, quietly marrying in December 2023. Since then, they have welcomed their first child together and launched their Peacock reality series, Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together, which premiered in June 2025.
Their advice for Valentine’s Day, to prioritize intimacy and physical connection, might be simple, but it clearly works for the Haynes family.
In one of the buzziest moments of the weekend, professional baddie Kayla Nicole shattered social media as Toni Braxton in a recreation of the R&B legend’s “He Wasn’t Man Enough” video seemingly aimed at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
Naturally, the internet erupted over the now-viral homage to Toni Braxton that doubled as a long-awaited maybe-response to Trayvis that sparked speculation that Kayla fired shots at the engaged couple.
Based on the reactions, it seems like Kayla won this round in the seemingly never-ending feud that Taylor reignited on her latest album The Life of a Showgirl.
There was also some commotion for Nelly’s ’90s West Coast-themed ‘Hall-MO-ween’ pordy where guests rocked their drippiest jheri-wigs, Oakland Raiders hats, and chucks while paying homage to Boyz N The Hood and other iconic moments from the west side.
The sequel to last year’s heehaw hootenany, Nelly’s brazy birthday bash brought out Ne-Yo, Jermaine Dupri, Dallas Austin, Big Tigger, and more for good vibes, gansta music, and with a splash og gin and juice.

From the beginning – and here I mean the beginning of the show, not time, as “Saturday Night Live” hasn’t been on the air that long – SNL has earned a reputation for being a real pressure cooker. Long hours. Sleepless nights. Unreasonable demands. Backstage fights.*
Add to that a tradition of management treating the careers of performers and writers in a rather cavalier fashion, with loyal team members being dismissed on a whim, often times in a cruel (or at the very least, insensitive) fashion.
Over the past several days, as SNL ramps up to the debut of its 51st season, a number of personnel have received their walking papers. Cast members Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker and Emil Wakim, along with writer Celeste Yim, are all out. Heidi Gardner announced that she will not return next season, but speculation is that she moved on of her own accord. Walker has stated publicly that the atmosphere at SNL could be “toxic as hell.” Wakim called his firing “a gut punch.”
According to numerous books and articles (Live from New York: The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live as Told by Its Stars, Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live, Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live), much of SNL’s dysfunction can be laid at the feet of the show’s producer, Lorne Michaels.
A man who has long cultivated an image of inscrutability, Michaels is someone who, it would seem, likes to play with his employee’s heads in a variety of ways, so as to keep them off-balance. Making people wait in his reception room for hours. Sometimes not telling future cast members that they had been hired. Playing favorites. Putting tremendous pressure on his staff and mandating unreasonable deadlines “because that’s the way we’ve always done it.”
Michaels is an old dog, so it is highly unlikely that he is going to learn any new tricks. Maybe it’s time for a new dog, er, producer?
*When Chevy Chase returned to SNL to host an episode after leaving the show at the end of its first season, he managed to get into a fist fight with Bill Murray prior to the broadcast. Chase had been taunting Murray for several days, but it was Murray who got the last word, hollering “Medium talent! Medium talent!” as he and Chase were pulled apart.
Ticket Alert If you like your rock and roll lewd and lascivious, you just might dig a double bill featuring Buckcherry and Nashville Pussy on Sunday, September 28, at Warehouse Live Midtown. Tickets are on sale now for a show that will have something to offend just about everyone.
Austin’s Uncle Lucius returned to the Heights Theater on Friday, October 10, with its signature blend of rock and roll, country and blues. Tickets are currently on sale, and they are going fast.
Lorrie Morgan is the real deal, first appearing onstage at the Grand Ole Opry to sing “Paper Roses” when she was only 13. During the ‘90s, she racked up an armload of platinum and gold albums by bringing a touch of pop into a more traditional country sound. Morgan will perform at the Dosey Doe on Saturday, February 21, as part of the venue’s popular “dinner and a show” format.
Born in Serbia, guitarist Ana Popovic knew her way around a guitar by the time she was a teenager, steeped in American rock and blues. She’s known for her guitar chops, but Popovic is an equally expert vocalist. You can catch her act on Friday, February 22, at the Dosey Doe Big Barn. Again, it’s a dinner / show thing, so go there hungry and ready for some chicken-fried steak. Concerts This Week The Fixx was among the best of the early MTV bands, with a sleek rock sound and a commanding visual style. But what really distinguished the band was a run of well-crafted songs like “One Thing Leads to Another,” “Red Skies at Night,” “Stand or Fall” and “Saved by Zero.” Significantly, most of the musicians from the Fixx’s golden era are still around, including Cy Curnin (vocals), Jamie West-Oram (guitar), Rupert Greenall (keyboards) and Adam Woods. Return to those thrilling days of yesteryear tonight at the House of Blues. Nelly is at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Thursday, on a bill that also includes Chingy and Ja Rule. Early in his career, Nelly set himself apart from the pack by emphasizing his Midwest roots in St. Louis during an era that was dominated by rap from the east coast, the west coast and the south. In addition to his activities as a recording artist, Nelly has appeared in films (The Longest Yard) and television (“CSI: NY”). And if that weren’t enough, Nelly can also boast a third-place finish on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2020. The Pixies have long been considered one of the most influential alt-rock bands, inspiring acts like Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. Almost 40 years on, the band is still touring with a lineup that includes three of the band’s original members (Black Francis, vocals and guitar; Joey Santiago, guitar; and David Lovering, drums). Catch the Pixies on Saturday at the White Oak Music Hall and learn more by consulting this week’s interview with Santiago in the Houston Press. Conroe-born Parker McCollum will be at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Saturday as part of his “What Kind of Man” tour, on a bill that includes Kameron Marlowe and Vincent Mason. The country juggernaut has been on a roll this year, headlining a Rodeo Houston performance at NRG Stadium in March and releasing the album Parker McCollum in June. Traditionalists will be cheered to hear that the new record has a lean production style, harkening back to his debut, The Limestone Kid. Several significant rap shows are coming up this week, including performances from Nelly (see above) and Chris Brown (see below), along with NBA YoungBoy at Toyota Center on Saturday. To clarify, “NBA” has nothing to do with the National Basketball Association. It stands for “never broke again.”
It’s been quite a year so far for YoungBoy. In April, he completed over three years of house arrest stemming from convictions for the distribution and manufacture of drugs, possession of stolen firearms and a federal firearm charge. Well, I supposed it gave him plenty of time to write new material and prep for his current tour. And by the way, don’t despair if you couldn’t get tickets for YoungBoy’s concert this week. He will return to Toyota Center for another show on Tuesday, October 28. R&B singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer and actor Chris Brown has been a lightning rod for controversy over the years, but things seem to have calmed down somewhat in his sphere as of late. Brown will bring his “Breezy Bowl XX” event to Daikin Park on Monday, with a lineup that also includes Summer Walker and Bryson Tiller. Brown is pulling out all the stops for this tour, promising a show that features multiple LED screens, pyro, lasers, inflatables and AI-generated video material.
Aww, baby; the rumors are true! Nelly and Ashanti are not only expecting—but the rapper and R&B mama-to-be are ENGAGED!
Source: Paras Griffin / Getty
The news was first shared by Ashanti, 43, who took to Instagram on Wednesday, April 17, to announce her pregnancy.
In a video, Ashanti is seen getting ready for a performance as her glam team and her mom Tina Douglas urgently ask her how much time she needs.
“Uh, I’m gonna need about nine months,” responds the singer with a smile.
Following the big reveal, Ashanti confirmed to ESSENCE that Nelly, 49, popped the question and asked her to be his wife.
“This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation,” said Ashanti. “Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”
Ashanti also gave more insight into their pregnancy journey and told ESSENCE that they’re the co-owners of Proov, a diagnostics company that offers at-home tests that help individuals looking to conceive make it happen faster and in a way that doesn’t leave a large dent in their pockets. The rekindled duo owns the company alongside founder Amy Beckley, PhD.
After the news broke, Ashanti was seen onstage at a Florida conference cradling her baby bump in a royal blue dress.
This will be Ashanti’s first child, Nelly’s fifth. The rapper has a daughter, Chanelle, a son, Cornell Jr., and adopted Shawn and Sydney Thomas, the two children of his sister, Jackie Donahue, after she passed away from leukemia in 2005.
The rekindled couple sparked pregnancy rumors in December when Ashanti rested her hands on her stomach during a performance. Just days later,US Weekly broke the news that they were expecting their first child.
Most recently Dan thought they spotted Ashanti’s burgeoning bump while she performed onstage with Nelly in February for the 10th anniversary of E11EVEN Miami.
On Wednesday, April 17, Ashanti took to Instagram to share a video revealing her pregnancy, per The Shade Room.
Minutes later, the singer’s exclusive interview with Essence was published. During the singer’s sit down with the outlet, she revealed that she and Nelly are now engaged.
“This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation,” she told the outlet. “Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancee, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”
Whew! Roommates, Nelly flew out to Las Vegas and got on his Chrisean Rock! The rapper checked in with his “baby” Ashanti via Instagram Live overnight on Sunday (Feb. 11). While on his way to a performance, he told the R&B singer that he lost his bottom tooth in Sin City!
“We on our way to Marquee, Super Bowl weekend,” Nelly said, revealing his nightclub booking. “Sh*t so motherf**king crazy, I done knocked my damn tooth out my mouth.”
Ashanti Was Screaming Laughing At His Toothless Look
From the looks of it, though, Ashanti already knew what was up because she was mid-laugh when she joined Nelly’s Instagram livestream.
Dressed in a baby blue top, matching eyeshadow, and silver hoop earrings, Ashanti got her laugh off while kicking it on a couch. Another woman in her company also got a couple of kikis in when she glanced at Nelly’s toothless image on the screen.
And here’s the part that had Ashanti extra weak: this isn’t the first time Nelly has lost the tooth! Apparently, she found it for him “last time” in Miami.
“Where are the spares,” Ashanti asked, saying she had some for him while screaming with laughter. When he asked her if she still loved him, the singer responded, “Of course.”
Her ultimate suggestion? Put in a “chicklet.”

More On Nelly & Ashanti’s Rekindled Romance
It’s unclear if Ashanti is also in Las Vegas, where NFL fans are just hours away from watching the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers go head-to-head in this year’s Super Bowl.
On Feb. 7, the singer was in New York performing at Adore Me’s show for New York Fashion Week, per Getty Images. Yesterday, she acknowledged the event on her Instagram page. Meanwhile, amid her kii with Nelly online, she shared footage of another performance in Fresno, California.
She could likely be joining her man in Vegas later today. However, the couple didn’t discuss their travel plans with their combined 12.3 million followers.
For those just catching up, Nelly and Ashanti spun the block for each other early last year! Rumblings of getting back together started in December 2022. But fans really began putting two-and-two together after they attended a boxing match together in April.
Months later, in September, Nelly seemingly confirmed they were back together. Within the same week, Ashanti rocked a clutch featuring a 2003 picture of them on the VMAs’ red carpet. In October, Nelly gifted Ashanti a diamond necklace for her 43rd birthday, and the following month, she gifted him a brand-new car for his 49th.
In December, US Weekly exclusively reported that the rekindled couple is expecting their first child together. However, neither Ashanti nor Nelly have confirmed or denied the news. Nonetheless, speculation about whether Ashanti is pregnant has continued online with her every pop-pout.
Nelly and Ashanti recently made a cutely coupled appearance in Miami that further fueled speculation that they’re expecting their first child.

The Pair Recently Cashed Out On Each Other’s Birthdays
As The Shade Room previously reported, Nelly confirmed his rekindled romance with Ashanti while speaking with Rasheeda Frost in September. PopSugar reports that the pair initially began dating on and off in 2003 and split in 2013.
Ashanti publicized their reunion shortly after by rocking a throwback photo of her and Nelly at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The “Rock Wit U” singer had a ball skrrt-skrrting through paradise courtesy of locally owned Jet Cars Turks with a staff that’s “experienced and familiar with the most beautiful locations that wow our guests’ every time,” according to its site.
This latest extravagant getaway comes a few months after ‘Shanti took her thirst-trapping talents back the Bahamas for some family fun in the sun.
The jet-setting stunner had a timeeee at the lavish Goldwynn resort bustling with good vibes, breathtaking views, and fun activities in one of her favorite travel destinations.

Ever since Nelly and Ashanti announced their rekindled relationship, they’ve been absolutely inseparable.

The couple’s latest sighting comes as Nelly celebrated his birthday on Tuesday night, hosting a Halloween-themed party in Georgia ahead of his actual birthday on Nov. 2. The couple dressed up in matching all-black outfits to host the festivities, wearing military looks for the “G.I. Moe” themed event.
Ashanti was rocking a high-neck bodysuit with a sash of fake bullets on top, a jacket with gold accents, and a fake gun.
Nelly matched his girlfriend’s look with a full-body ninja suit that included a cap covering his head and chin, a bulletproof vest, and the same fake gun as Ashanti.
This birthday/Halloween celebration comes after the couple announced they were officially back together in September, a decade after their on-and-off relationship from 2003 to 2013.
At the event, Nelly flashed a huge smile as his other half serenaded him on stage with her famous voice, going on to present the birthday boy with an extravagant gift: a new car.

The excited crowd filmed as she presented Nelly with his birthday gift: a brand new car. After receiving the vehicle, the “Air Force Ones” rapper kissed Ashanti on the cheek, which prompted a huge smile from the singer.
After Ashanti’s show-stopping presentation, Jermaine Dupri along with record producers Bryan-Michael Cox and Polow da Don made their way onstage for a song. Another one of Nelly’s friends, King George, also took the stage in honor of the rapper’s birthday.
Since rekindling their relationship, Nelly and Ashanti have not been shy about sharing their love. In September, the same day Nelly finally confirmed speculation that they reconciled during an appearance on the Boss Moves with Rasheeda, Ashanti attended the 2023 MTV VMAs while carrying a personalized purse with a photo of her and the “Hot In Herre” rapper.
“We’re in a great space, everything is positive, we’re having a lot of fun,” Ashanti told PEOPLE on the red carpet at the time.
See Ashanti surprise her boo with a new car down below:
While appearing on “Boss Moves With Rasheeda” on Sept. 13, Nelly finally confirmed that he and Ashanti are dating again following months of speculation. “Yeah, we cool again. I think it surprised both of us, though. It wasn’t anything that was planned,” he said.
Nelly explained that spending time apart has only made his current relationship with Ashanti stronger. “Sometimes being separate you understand one another more,” he added. “You could be like, ‘Well yo, let me exactly see maybe what they see.’ We all can be defensive sometimes in our own relationships. We know we wrong but we going to stand on it, you know what I mean? But we all a victim to that.”
Ashanti also confirmed their romance at the 2023 MTV VMAs that same day. “We’re in a great space, everything is positive, we’re having a lot of fun,” the singer told People on the red carpet. Although Nelly wasn’t physically at the 2023 MTV VMAs, he was there in spirit as Ashanti wore a customized purse that featured a photo of the couple.
As far as early 00s bangers go, Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” is difficult to top. Not only did it get people to take their clothes off at house parties worldwide, but it also smashed new records at a time when streaming was still germinal and the Grammys hadn’t even yet offered up yet an award for such a category as Best Male Rap Solo Performance. Nelly managed to secure almost a million (760,000, to be exact) streams on AOL Music’s “First Listen,” which was launched the same year “Hot in Herre” came out: 2002. As far as concern for global warming went that year, in an annual global climate report, it was assessed that: “Global temperatures in 2002 were 0.56°C (1.01°F) above the long-term (1880-2001) average, which places 2002 as the second warmest year on record.” Oh how saddened one is to use the phrase, “Little did they know…” here, but yes, little did humanity know (despite ceaseless and ominous warnings), it was all going to get so much worse. That is to say, so much fucking hotter. And yes, Nelly seemed to want to make a hit out of that no-brainer prophecy in a song like “Hot in Herre.”
Taking elements of Chuck Brown’s 1979 single, “Bustin’ Loose,” (hence, “I feel like bustin’ loose/And I feel like touchin’ you”), Nelly created a club (and yes, climate change) anthem out of it by also appearing in a music video helmed by Director X, already a beloved protégé of Hype Williams at that time. The scene of Nelly pulling up to the club in his car would end up seeming to inspire Britney Spears the following year in her own video for “Me Against the Music,” in which she, too, opens her video with a pulling up to the club scene. And, on a side full-circle note, “Me Against the Music” would be the one hundredth track for AOL Music, First Listen to offer up as an exclusive streaming preview. Because, back when such internet technology was still new, music releases could still be positioned as an “event.” As much as going to the club to dance in a sweat-drenched fever could be. And that’s precisely what happens for the majority of “Hot in Herre,” as female dancers (after all, it’s a rap video) with visible beads of sweat dripping down their faces and bodies do their best to ignore the unbearable temperature in the name of having a good time and also trying to get laid. Because there’s a reason wanting to bone goes back to a phrase like “being in heat.”
As Nelly moistens his lips, jumps the divider of his VIP area and approaches the woman who’s attracted his attention, played by Pasha Bleasdell (who tragically died of a brain tumor in 2022), bodies continue to converge on one another as Nelly gets his moment to shine on the dance floor with Bleasdell in front of him. While that goes on, many of the (mostly female) dancers in the club proceed to take Nelly’s advice about taking off their clothes—or at least pieces of them. The “sexily glistening” (as opposed to grossly sweaty) bodies that are paraded by Director X are of a uniquely 00s aesthetic that has only recently been revived with similar effect in Euphoria. Soon enough, Nelly is starting to take some of his own more frivolous articles of clothing off as other clubgoers fan each other with their hands and generally start to appear as though they’re attending a taping of MTV’s Spring Break as opposed to a Nelly video filmed in his adopted hometown of St. Louis. And, talking of St. Louis, the lesser-known version of the video (reserved for showing to the European set) took place in front of and inside of the famed St. Louis Arch (or at least a CGI’d version of it). Starting with Cedric the Entertainer as the bouncer (in the original, he’s the DJ) for the club that the Arch has become, various revelers enter the elevator leading up through the Arch as one man blows his hand back and forth to indicate the hotness inside the elevator, though it actually looks like he’s just trying to wave away the scent of someone else’s fart.
Soon, Nelly pulls up to the arch and gets in the elevator with just one other woman as we’re asked to ignore the architectural impossibility of a nightclub being able to “fit” inside the so-called top of the Arch. And while, yes, one can technically ride to the “top,” the elevators to do so are nothing like the posh one presented in Nelly’s rendering of it. But, clearly, 2002 was a much easier time for enlisting viewers’ suspension of disbelief.
As a randomly-placed thermometer shows the temperature going up while more people enter the imaginary “Arch Club” (complete with a staircase in the background), Nelly pretty much recreates the same scenes from the U.S. version of the video, except with a far more “European” slant…in that when people start to peel one another’s clothes off, director Bille Woodruff is sure to capture the sweat whipping off people’s bodies as this happens. We’re talking it looks practically like the Flashdance bucket scene. Woodruff, unfortunately, would also direct a number of R. Kelly videos over the years, whose crimes against women would make Nelly’s various rape allegations (one of which broke just before the #MeToo movement of 2017 did) look positively tame…not to trivialize what happened to the women who were assaulted by Nelly. But, back in 2002, both men were still safe and protected in their fame bubble, chock-full of enablers and sycophants as it was. The pressure, for Nelly, didn’t get truly “hot in herre” until #MeToo finally did. The roof was on fire, in other words, much as it is in the club in the U.S. version of the video, at which point the ceiling sprinklers finally burst. The way a storm has to erupt whenever it gets too sweltering. As for the second version of the video, the thermometer ends up breaking, spewing red mercury as it does.
At the end of the decade that Nelly reigned over (though really just the first half of it), the 00s were reported as being the hottest on record. “Hot in Herre” (“herre” being this cesspool of a globe) indeed. But that was soon to be topped by the report on the burning temperatures of the 2010s. Undeniably, the 2020s will keep upping the previously-held records, with Nelly’s formerly “sexy” single becoming, increasingly, an eerie and macabre prophecy. Complete with him also telling people to “let it just fall out” and “let it hang all out.” Elsewhere among his rapey lyricism, he includes, “I got a friend with a pole in the basement/(What?)/I’m just kiddin’ like Jason/Unless you gon’ do it…”
Cringeworthy moments of the song aside (including “What good is all the fame if you ain’t fuckin’ the models?”), Nelly does bring up a valid question when he keeps urging people to take their clothes off in the heat. And that is: will clothes really still be required when the heat gets more insufferable? Like, Hades-level insufferable. Or can we all go back to Garden of Eden’ing it despite being a very long way from paradise? Which the weather of 2002 looks more and more like from this perspective.
MEXICO CITY — Hundreds of thousands of people marched in Mexico’s capital Sunday in a show of support for President Manuel López Obrador, who before assuming the presidency had led some of the country’s biggest protests.
The “people’s march” marked four years in office for the leftist leader and was a response to a large opposition march two weeks ago to protest López Obrador’s proposal to reform the country’s electoral authority.
The president himself led Sunday’s march through central Mexico City, which was accompanied by mariachi music, singing and a festive atmosphere. Many participants had been bused in from provinces across Mexico in trips organized by the ruling Morena party, unions and social groups.
The opposition insisted that many participants were forced to join the march, but López Obrador said he had not put “a penny” of the federal budget into the march. Demonstrators questioned said they had come voluntarily.
But in many cases the transportation was provided by local governments or politicians who wanted to be well thought of inside the ruling party.
Gaby Contreras, a former Morena mayor, brought a group from Teoloyucan, north of the capital, and was the only one of her group authorized to speak. “We are here to support the president.”
Pedro Sánchez, a bricklayer who came with his wife from the Tehuantepec isthmus in southern Mexico, said his municipality organized everything. Hundreds of buses that had brought participants lined nearby streets.
“I come from Sonora by plane and I paid for my ticket,” said lawyer and López Obrador supporter América Verdugo.
Nelly Muñoz, an administrator from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, said “it’s called ‘organization’ and and believe it or not, it’s what we’ve been doing since 2006.”
That date was a reference to the year López Obrador came within 0.56% of the vote of winning the presidency and denounced his loss as fraudulent. Many supported him, launching a mass protest movement.
López Obrador was elected to the presidency 12 years later and his Morena party won four of six races for governor in last year’s midterm elections, giving the ruling party control of 22 of Mexico’s 32 states, an important advantage heading into the 2024 presidential elections.
But the government has been criticized for its increased use of the military, laws whose constitutionality has been questioned in the courts, and its support for controversial mega-projects, Some people who support the president are now are his critics.
Clara Jusidman, founder of INCIDE Social, an NGO specialized in democracy, development and human rights, said that what is important isn’t the number of participants in the march, but “why they participated.”
She said many Mexicans feel compelled to participate because they receive money transfers from the government, which is its main way of supporting those in need. Others want to be in the good graces of the party ahead of the 2024 local, state and presidential elections. The leading contenders to replace López Obrador as Morena’s presidential candidate in 2024 appeared in the march.
But there was no shortage of fans of Mexico’s president, who maintains a high approval rating.
Alberto Cervantes, who traveled from Los Angeles to join the march, had the president’s face and “AMLO 4T” tattooed on his arm. AMLO is the popular acronym for López Obrador’s name, and 4T refers to the “4th Transformation,” which López Obrador says he is carrying out in Mexico.
Lorena Vaca, who waved a flag of the LGBTQ community, said she came to ask for more attention for women and transgenders.
“There are things we don’t agree with… but that doesn’t mean we don’t support the Fourth Transformation process,” said Aurora Pedroche, a member of a critical sector within Morena who questions the party’s leadership but supports the president.
Mexico’s opposition had called a massive march because they feared López Obrador planned to use his proposed reforms to compromise the electoral institute’s independence and make it more beholden to his party.
López Obrador repeatedly criticized the march and days later said he would call his own march.
“You can’t make a change overnight and Andrés Manuel is not infallible,” Pedroche said. “But we have worked hard and what we don’t want is for this to be reversed.”
