Time to stop worrying about Colorado State’s NCAA Tournament hopes.
Time to start thinking about where the CSU Rams might land if they win the Mountain West Conference tournament.
The CSU men moved within two victories of doing just that with an 85-78 win over 23rd-ranked Nevada in Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Next up is a semifinal date with the winner of Thursday night’s late game between No. 3 seed Boise State and No. 6 New Mexico. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. MDT Friday.
Senior guard Isaiah Stevens was brilliant, scoring 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting while dishing seven assists, and Jalen Lake was nearly flawless off the bench with 16 points while hitting all three of his 3-point attempts. The seventh-seeded Rams (24-9) buried seven 3s en route to topping a Nevada (26-7) club that beat them twice during the regular season, the last of which came on a half-court buzzer-beater in Fort Collins.
The second-seeded Wolf Pack didn’t have a shot at such late-game theatrics Thursday night. CSU raced out to a 10-point halftime lead, withstood a pair of second-half runs from Nevada and held on for their fourth straight win.
Along the way, the Rams turned the ball over just nine times while forcing 15 Nevada giveaways.
Jarod Lucas, the Nevada guard who hit that half-court heave in FoCo, led the Wolf Pack with 18 points but was largely contained for most of the night.
Nique Clifford added 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for CSU, Joel Scott had 11 points and five rebounds, and Joe Palmer added 12 points as part of a 35-21 advantage in bench scoring for the Rams.

IOWA — Iowa star Caitlin Clark became the all-time NCAA Division I scoring leader on Sunday, breaking the late Pete Maravich’s 54-year-old record when she made two free throws after a technical foul was called in the No. 6 Hawkeyes’ game against No. 2 Ohio State.
Clark entered the game in Iowa City needing 18 points to pass Maravich’s total of 3,667, amassed in just 86 games over three seasons at LSU (1967-70).
Maravich’s record fell four days after Clark broke Lynette Woodard’s major college women’s record with 33 points against Minnesota on Wednesday.
Clark’s record-setting points Sunday came in improbable fashion. Best known for her long 3-point shots, she instead went past Maravich after Ohio State was called for a technical foul with less than a second to go in the first half.
Clark swished both free throws to run her career total to 3,668 points; she had no reaction after the second shot went through.
Asked in a television interview at halftime if she was aware of the record when she stepped to the line, Clark said: “Not really. When they announced it and everybody screamed, that’s when I knew.”
Clark got off to a slow start. Her first shot was a 3-pointer that bounced off the rim. She missed a layup and from deep on the right wing before making a 3 from the left side for her first basket.
After starting 2 for 7, she made 3 of her next 4 shots – including three straight 3-pointers, each deeper than the previous.
Woodard was among the attendees at Carver-Hawkeye Arena to help Clark celebrate senior day. Also on hand were basketball great Maya Moore, who was Clark’s favorite player, and Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.
On Thursday, Clark announced she would enter the 2024 WNBA draft and skip the fifth year of eligibility available to athletes who competed during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is projected to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Indiana Fever, and the WNBA already is seeing a rise in ticket sales.
Logitix, which researches prices on ticket resale platforms, reported an average sale price of $598 for a ticket to this game purchased since Feb. 1.
“Listen, this is the greatest ticket on the planet right now,” Woodard said in an interview with ESPN before the game. “Hey, I’m going to enjoy this right now.”
Clark is all but assured of one or two more appearances at the arena in Iowa City after Sunday. Iowa is projected to be a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament, meaning it would be at home for the first two rounds.
Pearl Moore of Francis Marion owns the overall women’s record with 4,061 points from 1975-79 at the small-college level in the AIAW. Moore had 177 points at Anderson Junior College before enrolling at Francis Marion.
Clark was 393 behind Moore as of halftime Sunday, and she has only three to 10 more games left in an Iowa uniform depending on how far the Hawkeyes advance in the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.
The fall of Maravich’s record will be subject to scrutiny.
Maravich’s all-time scoring mark is one of the more remarkable in sports history. There was no shot clocik or 3-point line in his era. The 3-point line was adopted in 1986.
Maravich averaged 44.2 points per game. He scored more than 60 in a game four times, topping out at 69 against Alabama on Feb. 7, 1970.
Clark averages 28.3 points for her career and was playing in her 130th game Sunday. Her career-best output was 49 points against Michigan on Feb. 15, when she passed Kelsey Plum as the NCAA women’s Division I career scoring leader.
Clark has 54 games with at least 30 points, the most of any player in men’s or women’s college basketball over the last 25 years. She has six triple-doubles this season and 17 in her career.
“What Caitlin’s done has been amazing. She’s fantastic player, great for the women’s game and basketball in general,” Maravich’s eldest son, Jaeson told The Associated Press last week.

(Associated Press) – The NCAA has told its enforcement staff to halt investigations into booster-backed collectives or other third parties making name, image and likeness compensation deals with Division I athletes.
In a letter to member schools, NCAA President Charlie Baker said the the Division I Board of Directors directed enforcement staff to hold off.
The move comes a week after a federal judge granted a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit brought by the attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia.
The antitrust suit challenges NCAA rules against recruiting inducements, saying they inhibit athletes’ ability to cash in on their celebrity and fame.

Move over, NFL. College football is taking the spotlight. As we Google the words for “Auld Lang Syne” or nurse a hangover from celebrating the end of 2023 a bit too vigorously, bowl season is underway.
And there’s a lot at stake this year, with the College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s choice of the four teams in the playoffs leaving a lot of fans disgruntled, especially those in Florida State—which went undefeated this year but won’t have a shot at the National Championship.
Bowl season started 11 days ago and there have already been some big matchups, but it’s the games right before and on New Year’s Day that have the biggest impact.
If you’re ready to absorb some end of year college football, here’s a look at who’s playing in which bowl games in 2023 and early 2024—and some options to watch them if your current TV setup proves insufficient.
Here’s who’s playing in the later games this year.
Peach Bowl – Penn State (10) vs. Ole Miss (11), 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPN
Music City Bowl – Auburn vs. Maryland, 2:00 p.m. ET on ABC
Orange Bowl – Florida State (5) vs. Georgia (6), 4:00 p.m. ET on ESPN
Arizona Bowl – Wyoming vs. Toledo, 8:00 p.m. ET on Barstool
Reliaquest Bowl – LSU vs. Wisconsin, 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2
Citrus Bowl – Iowa (17) vs. Tennessee (21), 1:00 p.m. ET on ABC
Fiesta Bowl – Oregon (8) vs. Liberty (23), 1:00 p.m. ET on ESPN
Rose Bowl (College Football Semifinal) – Michigan (1) vs. Alabama (4), 5:00 p.m. ET on ESPN
Rose Bowl (College Football Semifinal) – Washington (2) vs. Texas (3), 8:45 p.m. ET on ESPN
College Football Playoff National Championship – TBD vs. TBD, 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN
Only a select few are broadcast over the air on ABC, so you’re going to have a rough time. To catch those, the best way to watch is with a good HD antenna. Be sure to test the antenna in multiple locations in your home to find the most reliable signal.
Yes, easily. If you’re not near a TV, you can log into ESPN.com or the ESPN app in many cases, but will need a cable login. Prefer another option? Here are a few that will work.
Disney’s bundle of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ no longer has a free trial, so you’ll have to pay $15 per month for all three combined (or $25 per month for no ads on Hulu).
Including Live TV in the bundle bumps the price to $77 per month ($90 with no ads).
After up to a two-week trial, you can expect monthly charges of $73. YouTube is also now the home of Sunday Ticket. Prices on that service initially ranged from $300 to $439 for the season, with the current discounts. YouTube, however, recently kicked off a mid-season special, dropping the price for the rest of the year to $174.
Dish Network’s Sling lower-tiered “Orange” plan will run you $40 per month. Adding the more comprehensive “Blue” plan bumps the cost to $55 per month. The seven-day free trial has disappeared, but the cord-cutting service is offering 50% off of the first month’s bill.
Formerly known as DirecTV Now, AT&T TVNow and AT&T TV, this oft-renamed streaming service will run you $75 per month and up after the free trial option.
This sports-focused cord-cutting service carries broadcast networks in most markets. There’s a seven-day free trial, followed by monthly charges of $75 and up, depending on the channels you choose.
You cannot. No college bowl games are scheduled to stream on Amazon this year.

Looking at recent cases like that of Sha’Carri Richardson, who was barred from competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics over a failed THC test, it’s clear that cannabis use among athletes is still a somewhat taboo topic. Still, looking at the slowly changing regulations in institutions like the NBA and NFL, the sports world is steadily embracing the potential benefits that cannabis has to offer athletes in regard to recovery and chipping away at the penalties for cannabis use of years past.
And it’s evident when we look beyond these large stages that the status quo is beginning to shift. Namely, a new anonymous survey of physicians from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) looking to assess opinions on the use of CBD and cannabis found that these doctors generally have favorable attitudes toward the substances, though there are still varying views.
The study, which appears in the journal Translational Sports Medicine, also found that most sports medicine physicians from the survey showed support for legal medical and recreational cannabis use.
The study begins noting the “growing evidence regarding cannabinoid use in sports medicine and performance,” highlighting CBD as a particular point of interest. Authors note that cannabis and cannabinoid use has been studied through other areas of medicine, though data in regard to sports medicine is sparse.
To analyze sports physicians’ views on cannabis, physician members of the AMSSM received a survey via email on two separate occasions, with a total of 333 completed responses.
According to the results, 72% of the respondents supported the 2018 removal of CBD from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned substance list, while 66% supported its removal from the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) banned substance list. Fewer, 59%, supported removing cannabis as a whole from the WADA banned substances list, though 81% said that sports physicians should have formal training on cannabis and cannabinoids and an overwhelming 93% majority were interested in continued medical education for cannabinoids.
A majority of respondents also showed support for medical cannabis legalization, 77%, and recreational legalization, 57%.
As many conversations around cannabis use in sports, including those surrounding Richardson back in 2021, revolve around its potential as a performance-enhancing substance, the survey also recorded physicians’ opinions on that topic.
A majority of respondents said that CBD and THC are not performance enhancing (approximately 76% and 66%, respectively). Most physicians also agreed that CBD was not detrimental to athletic performance (approximately 61%), though the opinion shifted when it came to THC, at approximately 37% saying it was not detrimental to athletic performance.
The survey also examined demographic information, finding that women, older doctors and rural respondents were less likely to favor legal adult-use cannabis. Authors note that these factors were also associated with a higher likelihood of disagreeing with the WADA removing cannabis from the prohibited substances list and the NCAA allowing college athletes to use cannabis.
Men and younger physicians were also less likely to identify cannabis as performance enhancing.
The study concludes noting that a number of sports doctors are already recommending CBD and cannabis products, noting that they are often used for chronic musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain. Authors also claimed that this was the first study to reveal that providers are recommending these products for sports-related concussions and performance anxiety.
“This advancing cultural shift motivates ongoing research and education for sports medicine providers to better answer questions posed by athletes about the safety, dosing, and potential effects of CBD and cannabis in sports,” researchers wrote.
When looking at data from the survey showing that more doctors would recommend CBD (40.8%) instead of cannabis (24.8%), authors said that the reasons “are not entirely clear.” Though, “given the overall safety profile of CBD, its lack of ‘intoxicating’ effects, and the general infiltration of CBD into mainstream consumer products, providers may see CBD as a safer option for patients compared to Cannabis and THC-containing products.”
Similarly, authors said that the reason more doctors believe that cannabis is detrimental to performance than CBD is unclear but that these perceptions could influence how sports medicine providers counsel athletes using these products.
“It is important to note that the ergogenic versus ergolytic effects of CBD compared to cannabis are still largely unknown,” the authors said. “Therefore, these perceptual differences can largely, if not exclusively, be attributed to marketing and advertising. In addition, one must recognize the seemingly ubiquitous addition of CBD to countless consumer products, which may also contribute to this evolving distinction.”
Authors also acknowledged the small sample size, accounting for only about 7% of the membership in the AMSSM, and due to the data coming from a single point in time, the study also can’t describe changing opinions.
“Lastly, although the survey was anonymous, this is still considered a fringe topic by many in sports medicine and medicine in general, which may limit the divulgence of actual behaviors and attitudes of respondents,” authors conclude.

Growing up in a Boston suburb in the 1960s, Charlie Baker learned his first political lesson — the art of listening to competing viewpoints — around the dinner table as his Democratic mother and Republican father hashed out the topics of the day.
There was a reason he was given two ears and one mouth, his mother would tell him.
It’s a story Baker repeatedly told as Massachusetts governor, and one that offers lessons for his job as president of the NCAA — the country’s largest college sports governing body overseeing some 500,000 athletes at more than 1,100 schools.
Earlier this month, the 6-foot-6 former Harvard basketball player outlined a vision for a new NCAA subdivision at the very top of college sports in a letter he sent to the more than 350 Division I schools. It was an attempt in part to grapple with one of the diciest issues facing the NCAA — how best to compensate college athletes.
Baker said his proposal would require schools that want to be a part of the new tier to commit to paying athletes tens of thousands of dollars per year through a trust fund. He also suggested all Division I schools bring name, image and likeness compensation for their athletes in-house through group licensing and remove limits on educational benefits schools can provide their players
“Some people are going to say you’re going too far and people will say but you’re not going far enough,” Baker said.
It’s part of a larger effort by the 67-year-old to help persuade lawmakers in Washington that the NCAA is trying to get ahead of its legal troubles as they face antitrust challenges that could usher in a new reality where some athletes are treated like paid employees. Coming to terms with that future is one reason the NCAA hired Baker.
Linda Livingstone, president of Baylor University and chair of NCAA board of governors, said Baker’s history as governor and stint as a former CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care demonstrated an ability to listen, learn and adapt.
“In both of those roles as governor and health care CEO he was in very complex environments and worked to solve some pretty hard, what seemed to be intractable, problems,” said Livingstone, who was part of the team that hired Baker. She said the fact that Baker didn’t come from the worlds of academia or athletics was another plus.
What the NCAA needs most from Baker is help in finding a model that will bring more stability to athletics. Livingstone said that model should provide compensation for athletes but stop short of designating them employees.
“We’re all working with Charlie as we develop these ideas together,” she said.
Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Baker appreciates the crisis college athletics is in and has brought a new urgency to the role.
“There’s the question of how governable the NCAA is and I think Charlie sort of poses that question in real time, because he is such an effective leader and manager,” Swarbrick said. “If he can’t engineer the change, I don’t think anybody can.”
For Baker, navigating potentially choppy political waters was a skill he honed as a Republican in Democratic Massachusetts, adapting to a sometimes frosty political environment by making as many allies as possible and choosing his fights carefully.
It was a lesson learned in part during his first run for governor against Democratic incumbent Deval Patrick in 2010. During the race, Baker came off as too conservative and a sore loser, said Erin O’Brien, an associate professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
“Four years later he ran as someone who was more bipartisan, congenial and I think that helped him,” O’Brien said. “He showed he could learn and change course.”
Although Baker at times found himself at odds with some unions, he developed a public “bromance” with then-Democratic Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh, a former labor lawyer and current executive director of the National Hockey League Players’ Association.
“He’s used to a semi-hostile environment. He’s used to working with people who aren’t exactly sure about him,” O’Brien said. “As governor, he could go along with the Democratic leaders with some small changes. With the NCAA, member schools are not going to be satisfied with the status quo. He has to be more of a doer.”
Michael McCann, a law professor and director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute at the University of New Hampshire, said Baker seems like a good fit for a nearly impossible job.
“He has the right background for what the NCAA needs to do, which is to reorient itself,” McCann said. “He’s pragmatic, he’s reality based, he understands the importance of deal making.”
During his eight years as governor Baker faced a slew of challenges, from battling blizzards, to trying to fix a teetering public transit system, to leading the state through the pandemic. He also drew the ire of former President Donald Trump by refusing to endorse or vote for him 2016 and 2020.
One issue that vexed Baker throughout his tenure was the state of metropolitan Boston’s public transit system. Baker poured billions into replacing tracks, fixing signals and updating electrical systems even as officials dealt with runaway trains, subway cars belching smoke and rush hour trains running on weekend schedules.
At times the system seemed unfixable, not unlike the NCAA. McCann said the organization has tried to cling to a model that doesn’t resonate with the public anymore — the idea that athletes at top schools are amateur athletes, even as college sports rakes in billions annually.
Baker will need to steer schools toward a new model, McCann said.
“It’s a big undertaking and he knew that. I don’t know if there is a right person for the job because it is so challenging,” he said. “The open-ended question is whether it’s too late for the NCAA.”

Important dates for the 2023 college football season:
It’s Championship Week in NCAA college football. Week 13 of the 2023 NCAA college football season marked the end of the line for top teams like Ohio State and teams with high hopes like UCLA, USC and Oregon State. Week 14 brings eight championship games, with OSU notably absent from the schedule.
The biggest story of the 2023 NCAA college football season was the Colorado Buffaloes, their superstar new head coach Deion Sanders (aka “Coach Prime”) making headlines before his team ever played a snap. For all of Prime’s bravado, and the team’s strong 3-0 start, the Buffaloes season ended with a whimper (and the loss of two top-tier quarterback recruits). The Buffaloes’ 4-8 record doesn’t bode well, but Prime’s first season in Colorado will be seen as an undeniable success (the Buffaloes were 1-11 in 2022), its ticket sales, school profile and recruiting on the rise.
As the 2023 NCAA college football regular season comes to a close, so does the Pac-12 as we know it. In July 2022, UCLA and USC finally agreed on something. The frenemy rivals would both leave the Pac-12 in favor of the Big Ten in 2024. This summer, Colorado announced it would return to the Big 12. Since then, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah announced an exodus from the Pac-12 to the Big-12 at the end of the 2023 season as well. The University of Washington and University of Oregon are also ditching the Pac-12 for the Big 10. Cal Berkeley and Stanford later announced they’d join the ACC, leaving OSU and WSU remaining. The Pac-2 seems unlikely, but what will become of the former Pac-12 remains to be seen.

Important dates for the 2023 college football season:
The Georgia Bulldogs want to make history: The Bulldogs struck gold last season winning back-to-back championships after beating the Alabama Crimson Tide 33-18 in 2022. Since 1936, no college team has won three-in-a-row. Coming into Week 12, the Bulldogs are one of eight teams that remain undefeated and have reclaimed the top spot in just about every college football ranking. Head coach Kirby Smart started the season aiming for the elusive three-peat, which is looking less elusive with each game of the season.
Football fans can’t get enough of the Colorado Buffaloes: If it seems like the biggest story of the 2023 NCAA college football season isn’t on the field, you’re not wrong. Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, aka Coach Prime, has dominated sports headlines since he announced in December of 2022 he’d leave the 11-1 Jackson State football program he’d built over the past three years in favor of the 1-11 Colorado Buffaloes. Coach Prime in prime time has proven a success despite the team’s 4-6 record. Winning or losing, the Buffaloes have seen skyrocketing TV ratings, the one bright spot in an ugly year for Pac-12 football.
How will all the college football shake ups shake out? In July 2022, UCLA and USC finally agreed on something. The frenemy rivals would both leave the Pac-12 in favor of the Big Ten in 2024. This summer, Colorado announced it would return to the Big 12. Since then, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah have announced an exodus from the Pac-12 to the Big-12 at the end of the 2023 season. Washington and Oregon State are also ditching the Pac-12 for the Big 10 at the same time.
The school shuffling won’t affect the 2023 season much, but expect journalists to talk about it to no end. With the Pac-12 currently down to just four teams for the 2024 season, the demise of the Pac-12 is sure to be one of the biggest stories of the season.
The Alabama Crimson Tide came into the 2023 season ranked No. 4. Saban and company aren’t comfortable with the demotion. Still not the dominant Bama team fans have come to rely on, the Tide are hoping to be a major threat to the Bulldogs scoring that three-peat. Ohio State has arguably one of the best receiver rooms in college football led by the dazzling Marvin Harrison Jr. The Buckeyes come into Week 12 undefeated, just one win over the 9-1 Crimson Tide.

Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti has suspended Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh for three games — or the rest of the Wolverines’ regular season — citing the league’s “sportsmanship” provision. The suspension applies only to game days, so Harbaugh will be able to coach the team during the week.
The punishment is in response to Michigan staff member Connor Stalions allegedly running an in-person scouting operation where he sent friends to games to video record the sideline play signals of future Michigan opponents.
The decision comes just hours before No. 2 Michigan is set to play at No. 11 Penn State on Saturday. The Wolverines were in the process of traveling to State College, Pennsylvania, when the decision came down.
Both the University of Michigan and Harbaugh’s personal attorney, Tom Mars, have vowed a legal challenge. It is expected they will seek a stay from a judge on Friday that would allow Harbaugh to coach Saturday. A more permanent injunction would be sought after that.
While Friday is a federal holiday — Veterans Day — it is common for courts to have a judge present or on call for emergency stays or issues that arise in all kinds of business disputes.
“We are dismayed at the Commissioner’s rush to judgment when there is an ongoing NCAA investigation — one in which we are fully cooperating,” Michigan said in a statement that included its intention to seek an injunction.
“To ensure fairness in the process,” the statement continued, “we intend to seek a court order, together with Coach Harbaugh, preventing this disciplinary action from taking effect.”
If the suspension holds, it would force Harbaugh to miss Michigan’s final three regular-season games — at Penn State, at Maryland and home in the end-of-the-season rivalry contest against Ohio State.
Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore would be expected to serve as interim head coach if Harbaugh is not able to coach. ESPN was the first to report the suspension.
Both the Wolverines and Buckeyes are currently 9-0 and that game will likely hold significant Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff implications. Harbaugh would be eligible to return for both the Big Ten title game on Dec. 2 and the CFP if Michigan qualifies.
At the center of the case is Stalions, a former U.S. Naval Academy grad and Marine captain, on the staff and serving as both a recruiting analyst and a sign decipherer.
He is accused of sending as many as 65 people, according to Yahoo Sports sources, to record games across the Big Ten and the country. Yahoo Sports first reported on Oct. 19 that the NCAA was investigating Michigan after a third-party investigative firm — still yet to be identified — presented evidence of Stalions’ actions.
Harbaugh immediately denied having any knowledge of how Stalions was able to gain information to steal signs. Harbaugh almost assuredly knew Stalions was stealing signs, but virtually every team in the country has someone who handles those duties. Stalions, who resigned from the program on Nov. 3, said through his attorney that no one at Michigan was aware of what he was doing.
It is legal under NCAA rules to steal an opponent’s signs. It is against the rules to “in-person scout.” Coaches routinely decipher signs via television broadcast, coaching film and even in-game. They also routinely “share” their findings with other coaches who are about to play a certain team.
While college coaches view the sharing of stolen signs as part of the game, some believed Stalions’ actions to be dramatically different even though the result is essentially the same.
Big Ten coaches outlined that position in a conference call with Petitti that ESPN cited as “angry” and “demanding.” Apparently Petitti agreed and decided to apply the league’s little-used “sportsmanship” policy to immediately apply a penalty to Harbaugh even though the NCAA investigation is still ongoing and the Association has not been able to present any findings to either Michigan or the Big Ten that Harbaugh was involved.
Thus far, sources tell Yahoo Sports, the NCAA has found no ties to Harbaugh or knowledge that Harbaugh knew of Stalions’ in-person tactics. Under a “strict liability rule” that just took effect this year, the NCAA can hold Harbaugh responsible for the actions of any of his assistants or staff members regardless of knowledge. The Big Ten has a similar rule, but it applies to “institutions,” not individual coaches.
In a letter sent to the Big Ten, Michigan has demanded the Big Ten wait until the full NCAA investigation plays out before issuing a punishment, warning that a lack of “due process” is not only unfair on its own right but sets up a dangerous precedent that the league will regret going forward.
The 59-year-old Harbaugh is in his ninth season at his alma mater, posting an 80-25 record. He previously coached Stanford and the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and is almost annually linked as a candidate to professional football coaching vacancies. He served a school-issued three-game suspension at the start of this season for an unrelated NCAA infractions case.
Michigan has won the last two Big Ten championships, both with Stalions on staff.

Bryce James, son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, has an opportunity to play college basketball in his father’s home state.
The 16-year-old, in a social media post to X (formerly Twitter), wrote that he’s “blessed” to receive an offer to play NCAA Division I men’s basketball for Ohio State University.
The NBA great’s youngest son wrote “#GoBuckeyes” alongside the post in a reference to the nickname of the team, which last made the Final Four in 2012.
The announcement arrives after Bryce ― a 6-foot-6-inch small forward for Notre Dame High School ― made an unofficial visit to Ohio State’s Columbus campus as he witnessed the school’s victory over Maryland during a college football game Saturday, ESPN reported.
Bryce, a four-star recruit in ESPN’s 2025 class, dropped by the university along with Dezhon Hall, a 6-foot-3-inch point guard and four-star recruit in the class of 2026. Hall shared clips of the two posing for photos as they each rocked Buckeyes uniforms.
The Ohio State news comes after Bryce received an offer from Duquesne University last year.
The Duquesne Dukes have a number of ties to LeBron including their head coach. Keith Dambrot, who coached LeBron in high school, CBS News noted.
Dru Joyce III, the Dukes’ associate head coach, also was LeBron’s teammate when the two played for St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio.
Bryce visited Ohio State one year after his brother, Bronny James, made a stop at the university, according to ESPN.
Bronny, who wound up signing to play with the University of Southern California, suffered a cardiac arrest during a practice in July caused by congenital heart defect.
His father told reporters last week that his son is “doing extremely well” as he recovers from the health episode.
“He has began his rehab process to get back on the floor this season with his teammates and USC,” said James, who also referred to his son’s “successful surgery” following the cardiac arrest.
“He’s on the up-and-up. Definitely a whirlwind and a lot of emotions for our family this summer. But the best thing we have is each other. And we stuck behind each other and gave Bronny strength throughout the whole process.”

The Clemson Tigers dropped out of the Top 25 for the first time in two seasons, but starting quarterback Cade Klubnik isn’t worried.
Felt great,” Klubnik said. “In control the whole game, it felt like we played like us,” he said following the Tigers staggering 48-14 victory over Florida Atlantic in Week 3. After a Week 1 upset loss to unranked Duke, the Tigers are looking for more wins as the Tigers look to claw their way back into the Top 25.
Klubnik and the reinvigorated Tigers offense will need all that momentum and confidence coming into Week 4 as the Heisman candidate Jordan Travis and the No. 4-ranked Seminoles head Clemson to take on the Tigers.

The Georgia Bulldogs want to run it back. The Georgia Bulldogs became just the fifth program to win back-to-back national championships when they beat the Alabama Crimson Tide 33-18 in 2022. Since 1936, no college team has won three-in-a-row. The Bulldogs are hoping to change all that. Head coach Kirby Smart has focused on leadership skills for his players, stating the team’s biggest opponent is “complacency.”
Can Deion Sanders make the Colorado Buffaloes great? Coach Prime made headlines during the offseason. Only ten scholarship players from the Buffaloes’ 2022-season roster remain on the team after Sanders took advantage of transfer portal rules to revamp the team’s roster. Prime’s in his first season as the Buffaloes coach and he’ll hope to work the same magic on the Buffaloes program as he did in his successful three years at Jackson State. But the lights of the Pac-12 shine brighter than they do in the FCS and Sanders will have to rise to the occasion. Good news for Sanders, the Buffs finished 1-11 last season. There’s only one way to go but up.
Important dates for the 2023 college football season:
4. Saban and company aren’t going to be comfortable with the demotion and will surely be a major threat to the Bulldogs scoring that three-peat. Ohio State has arguably one of the best receiver rooms in college football led by the dazzling Marvin Harrison Jr. The Buckeyes face some tough competition against Indiana in Week 1, but if the team has ever been primed to go all the way, this is that year. And don’t forget that Florida/Utah rematch.
