  • Lawrence man arrested after police pursuit

    SALEM, N.H. — Police arrested a Lawrence, Massachusetts, man following a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 93.

    Rafy Villa, 25, faces multiple charges after state police said he was speeding in a BMW X2 on Saturday shortly before 11:30 p.m. on I-93 north in Windham. Villa then allegedly sped up when Trooper Alex Guilbeault attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

  • Woman’s body recovered from water in Newbury

    NEWBURY — A woman’s body was pulled from the water Thursday on Plum Island north of Fordham Way, according to Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker.

    Newbury police responded to a call about a body in the water near Harvard Way at 11:46 a.m. The unidentified woman’s body was recovered by the Newburyport Fire Department and transported by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Tucker said in a statement late Thursday.

  • ‘We got him’: Brown University/MIT professor shooting suspect found dead in Salem, NH

    SALEM. N.H. — Described by the FBI as a “highly dangerous individual capable of extreme violence,” Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente was found dead in a storage facility Thursday night.

    Neves-Valente, 48, was a Portuguese national and former Brown University physics Ph.D. student. He was wanted in two states for fatal shootings at Brown University and of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor.

  • Topsfield Fair resumes after bomb scare, 1 in custody

    TOPSFIELD — The Topsfield Fair reopened Sunday morning after some tense moments with an emotionally disturbed person who said he had a bomb.

    About 7:20 a.m., fair officials were told of a “potential threat to the fairgrounds.”

    Suspect arrested in Christmas Eve murder in Lawrence

    LAWRENCE — The suspect in a murder on Christmas Eve at the Energy Lounge nightclub has been captured, authorities said.

    Franklin Laras, 27, who allegedly shot and killed Edward Javier Perez, 29, “is now in custody,” Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker announced Thursday night.

    Laras now faces arraignment Friday in Salem Superior Court.

    Details on Laras’ capture were not available Thursday night.

    An arrest warrant charges Laras with murder and two counts of firearms violation with two prior violent or drug crimes.

    Laras has been wanted by police since the shooting at Energy Lounge at 459 Broadway. He was placed on the state’s most wanted list.

    At 12:20 a.m. on Christmas Eve, Lawrence police responded to the nightclub for reported gunfire.

    Officers found Javier-Perez wounded. He was treated by Lawrence police and emergency medical technicians and taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

    Laras was identified as the suspect after an investigation by Lawrence police, state troopers and Tucker’s office.

    Laras is alleged to have had an altercation with Javier-Perez shortly after entering the nightclub. Laras allegedly drew a handgun and fired a shot at Javier-Perez from close range, according to a previous state police release.

    He then fled the scene.

    Laras was considered armed and dangerous. He also has ties to Springfield and Palmer, Massachusetts, state police said.

    Danvers Coast Guardsman to compete at annual Warrior Games Challenge

    Danvers native and Coast Guard Rear Adm. Edward “Teddy” St. Pierre will be joining more than 250 wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans at the 14th annual Department of Defense Warrior Games Challenge later this month in Florida.

    The event, which runs June 21-30 at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, will see athletes representing the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Space Force, U.S. Special Operations Command, and the Coast Guard, such as St. Pierre, competing in cycling, indoor rowing, swimming, and track.

    The Warrior Games are hosted each year by the U.S. Army Training & Doctrine Command, highlighting the exceptional physical skills and mental toughness of seriously wounded, ill, and injured active-duty and veteran service members. The event celebrates personal tenacity, perseverance, and the triumph of human spirit.

    The Navy Wounded Warrior’s adaptive athletics program is designed to meet the abilities of injured or ill individuals with competitions that help build self-esteem, lower stress levels, and invite service members to rejoin a supportive team environment.

    St. Pierre has served in the Coast Guard for nearly 30 years, with 16 duty stations throughout his career, according to an announcement. As he was approaching retirement, he received a diagnosis of atypical early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

    St. Pierre enrolled in the Navy Wounded Warrior at Naval Medical Center San Diego, which helped him and his family prepare for transition to retirement in Florida. He attended his first adaptive sports camp in February 2023, rekindling his competitive spirit. St. Pierre previously competed in the 2023 Warrior Games Challenge and medaled in swimming and track.

    Authorities identify Pelham man shot, killed by officer

    NASHUA, N.H. — Authorities have identified a Pelham man who was shot and killed by police Sunday night outside Lowe’s at 143 Daniel Webster Highway.

    Ryan Prudhomme, 41, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest outside the home improvement store. The investigation of the officer-involved shooting continues.

    Attorney General John Formella and New Hampshire State Police Col. Mark Hall identified the man in a joint statement.

    An autopsy confirmed that Prudhomme died from the gunshot wound, according to the state’s chief medical examiner.

    Nashua police responded to Lowe’s about 8:45 p.m. They were following up on a report from the Pelham Police Department to be on the lookout for Prudhomme, who was armed when he left his home.

    Prudhomme still had a handgun when officers encountered him outside the store, authorities said.

    Two officers fired less-lethal munitions while another officer used deadly force. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the man died from his injuries, the authorities said.

    The officers’ identities will not be released until formal interviews occur, which can take five to 10 days, according to the statement.

    The investigation is being conducted by the state Department of Justice and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit.
