Let’s be real—sometimes the bad guys just eat. No matter how fast or how crazily the main character “glows up” (we’re looking at you, Naruto), there’s something about a charismatic villain that just steals the spotlight. Whether it’s their backstory, their drip, or the way they absolutely body everyone in sight, certain anime antagonists end up being way more beloved than the actual hero.
And this isn’t just edgy “I like villains because I’m different” energy. We’re talking about villains who consistently dominate fan polls or, even better–completely overtake our TikTok For You Pages with edits to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” Did we make this list by ranking the best fan-made AMVs? You’ll never know. Here are five anime where the villain lowkey outshone the protagonist. (Warning: spoilers ahead.)
(Pierrot)
Madara Uchiha from Naruto Shippuden
You can be all “well, actually” with this one all you want, but the point remains: Madara Uchiha is theanime villain, not only in Naruto but in all of anime. Yes, he only showed up until Shippuden, but until that moment, everyone was anticipating his arrival. The Fourth Great Ninja War arc is remembered less for Naruto’s inspirational speeches and more for that scene where Madara soloed an entire army. Fans literally clipped it, memed it, and called it “peak fiction.” He is still used as a comparison for all the villains that came after. On MyAnimeList forums and Reddit, many argued Madara should’ve stayed the final villain instead of Kaguya, with threads still saying “Kaguya ruined the ending.” Sorry, Naruto, Madara invented aura farming, so he wins this time!
(Viz Media)
Meruem from Hunter x Hunter
Hunter x Hunter has a lot of great characters, but when Meruem enters the Chimera Ant arc, the entire tone of the anime shifts. What starts as a horrifying monster king story slowly turns into one of the most nuanced villain arcs in anime. Fans didn’t just like Meruem because he was powerful (though, let’s be real, the man was casually dusting Hunters like it was nothing). They loved him because of his relationship with Komugi, a human girl who taught him humility and compassion through a board game. Gon who? The internet still cries about Meruem’s final moments.
Askeladd from Vinland Saga
If you’ve watched Vinland Saga, you know that Askeladd is one of the most complex, morally grey characters in modern anime. While Thorfinn, the protagonist, is angry and driven by revenge, Askeladd operates on wit, charisma, and a strangely protective streak toward his men. You can’t help but like the moments he’s on screen. Fans love him because he wasn’t a one-note villain. He was manipulative, sure, but also deeply human—torn between his Viking identity and his hidden Welsh heritage. By the time his arc concludes, Askeladd basically steals the entire first season from Thorfinn, leaving fans stunned and even questioning whether he should have been the protagonist.
Mahito from Jujutsu Kaisen
Before we start arguing, yes, we know Mahito is deeply hated. Like, actually loathed. And for good reason! He has killed so many fan favorite characters. But let’s not twist it—he’s also one of the most talked about villains in anime. And in fandom, hype equals popularity, even if it’s negative. While Yuji Itadori is the classic selfless shonen protagonist, Mahito represents pure chaos. He’s sadistic, unhinged, and the kind of villain who gets under your skin because he fights dirty. He makes you feel helpless, filling viewers with dread any time he’s on screen. His ability to twist souls gave us some of the most disturbing (and unforgettable) deaths in Jujutsu Kaisen. However, this doesn’t mean he’s not in every conversation about Jujutsu Kaisen. Fans despise him, but they can’t stop analyzing his scenes.
Muzan Kibutsuji from Demon Slayer
Those fanmade edits we mentioned? The ones with the viral trend of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean? That trend was made for Muzan. There is no one else who completely embodies the drip the way Muzan does. Hell, he was even memed as Michael Jackson years before the trend ever began. Why, you may ask? Well, Tanjiro is wholesome, but compared to Michael Jackson Demon (aka Muzan), he just doesn’t generate the same meme energy. From the moment Muzan appeared in his flashy hat and suit, fans were instantly obsessed with his look. He became an internet icon before we even knew much about his powers. What a diva.
Heroes may be the face of the story, but villains are often the ones who keep us watching. From Madara flexing on an entire army to Meruem making us ugly cry, these antagonists prove that sometimes the “bad guy” steals the narrative.

Actor John “Beau” Billingslea, 79, is scheduled to appear at MomoCon 2024, May 24-27, to participate in curated panels and fan meet-n-greets. As a voice actor, he is known for iconic roles in popular anime such as Ay, the Fourth Raikage in Naruto and Jet Black in Cowboy Bebop.
“I will be at MomoCon in two weeks,” Billingslea said. “I look forward to seeing my friends, family and fans. I’m looking forward to coming back to Atlanta.”
This will be Billingslea’s first time participating in MomoCon, which started in Atlanta at Georgia Tech in 2011. The convention that celebrates Japanese Anime, American Animation, Comics, and Gaming (video games, esports, tabletop, LARP) has been consistently held at the Georgia World Congress Center since 2015.
This year, MomoCon anticipates the participation of 50,000 guests, compared to the 48,000 attendees who came in 2023.

Few Black actors, or any actors, have a comparable resume to Billingslea regarding on-camera and voice actor appearance. Since the 1970s, he’s acquired on-camera roles in television and film, and as a voice actor for animation and video games.
As an on-camera actor, he appeared in The Atlanta Child Murders television miniseries, MacGyver, NYPD Blue, Baywatch, Walker, Texas Ranger, NYPD Blue, 7th Heaven, The West Wing, NCIS, and more. Some of his film credits include Hannah Montana: The Movie and Star Trek Into Darkness.
However, his role as a voice actor in anime gained him an international fanbase. The Naruto franchise is one of the most popular anime series that consists of television shows, films, graphic novels, video games, toys, apparel, and other merchandise.
Earlier this year, trendy shoe brand Crocs released a limited-edition collaboration with Naruto. The brand took its signature clog-like shoe and created multiple designs based on characters from the anime series, along with special charms to place on the shoe.
This role is even more special because the character in Naruto that Billingslea gives his voice to is also Black, and considered to be a force to reckon with as the leader of one of the top ninja villages in the series. Known as The Village Hidden in the Clouds, this fictitious community consists of the most characters of color in the entire series and depicts cultural traits that resemble Black culture.
“When I started, there weren’t very many characters of color that were drawn in animation. I started my career doing caucasian characters. Luckily, I was in an environment where everyone was caucasian but my race did not hold me back in terms of them hiring me to voice characters. I was very fortunate in that way where I didn’t experience a bunch of discrimination because of my color,” Billingslea said.
Already an on-camera actor, Billingslea started his voice acting career in the late 1980s.
He continues, “A friend of mine was producing and overseeing the dubbing of foreign live-action films into English. There would be a German film with an African character, and he would ask me to dub the character into English. We did quite a few of those and one day, he asked me if I would do anime. I said ‘Sure, what’s anime’ because I didn’t even know what it was.”
That decision sparked a career that would also include anime series Digimon, Rurouni Kenshin, Rave Master, Cyborg 009, Hunter × Hunter, and Wolf’s Rain, most of which have aired on Cartoon Networks’ popular programs Toonami and Adult Swim; in addition to Naruto and Cowboy Bebop.
“A lot of people expressed how Cowboy Bebop helped them through hard times in their lives. I’ve gotten that a lot,” Billingslea said. “They’ll say, it was a bad time in their life for whatever reason, and watching cowboy bebop helped them through those hard times in their life.”
“When I hear stories like that it just warms my heart. Because when we’re in the booth we’re not thinking about having a profound effect on people. We’re just trying to entertain people with our work.”
Furthering his impact, Billingslea is also the voice actor for Leroy Smith, a new Black character in the Tekken franchise, which started as an arcade game in 1994. The character was introduced in Tekken 7, released in 2019, and carried over into Tekken 8, which was released in January 2024.
Tekken 8 sold over two million copies worldwide within its first month. Currently, it’s considered one of the top 10 selling video games in the United States according to monthly sales reports produced by research firm Circana.
Attendees can register for four-day or single-day memberships. Four-day memberships are $85-$100. Single days range from $45 – $60 (kids 9 and under free). Game tournament registration and separate concert tickets are also available at www.MomoCon.com.
The world of Naruto has lots of hidden villages, all with special strengths and pasts. Born from the friendship between Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha, these villages are powerful places where ninjas live. These villages are undoubtedly the center of Shinobi power and, hence, play a huge role in shaping the show’s narrative and storyline.
Konohagakure
Konohagakure, the beginning of hidden villages, represents great strength and toughness. Started by Senju and Uchiha, it helped make famous fighters like Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. Their power together is much bigger than other villages. It makes Konohagakure the best-protected place in Naruto’s world.
After the Fourth Big Fight between ninjas, Naruto became one of the strongest fighters anyone has ever seen. His friend, Sasuke, also showed that he was just as skillful. Their skill makes sure that Konohagakure stays on top in the world of ninjas.
Sunagakure
Sunagakure’s evolution from being weak to powerful shows its growth. At first, it was weak. But under Gaara’s guidance, it got better and stronger over time. With people like Gaara, Yodo, and Araya leading the way, Sunagakure kept growing stronger. Especially Gaara, he improved his skills a lot. Now, in the Boruto show, he can handle threats as strong as Otsutsuki-level ones.
Kumogakure
Kumogakure, a powerhouse village, boasts a lineage of exceptional shinobi consisting of The Third Raikage, the Fourth Raikage, Darui, and Killer Bee. Having Gyuki, the Eight-Tails shows how powerful they are and adds to their might. Their scientific prowess is evident by their creation of a moon-shattering cannon in “The Last: Naruto the Movie.”
Killer Bee, who hosts the Eight-Tails, is the top power of Kumogakure. Darui, who is known for fighting the Otsutsuki clan, and Kumogakure’s strong Third Raikage are symbols of their powerful ninja team.
Iwagakure
Iwagakure, historically formidable, controlled two Jinchuriki at one point – Roshi and Han. Their list of formidable warriors includes the strong Mu, whose name makes people scared. Onoki, the Third Tsuchikage, even got Madara Uchiha’s approval for his strength. After the Fourth Great Ninja War, Iwagakure’s science was so strong that they made creatures that were like Kage and stronger than Jonin.
The prize of Iwagakure’s strongest fighter bounces between Mu, the Third Tsuchikage, and Kurotsuchi, the Fourth Tsuchikage. Mu can disappear and use a special power called Dust Release Kekkei Tota, along with Kurotsuchi’s skill of Lava Release. This shows they are really skilled fighters.
Kirigakure
Kirigakure’s history is of the powerful Seven Swordsmen of the Mist and strong Kage. The Second Mizukage was one of the strongest in that time. Yagura, a perfect Jinchuriki, showed what real power is like. Mei’s skills with two special styles showed the power of Kirigakure.
With Chojuro in charge, Kirigakure grew even more. He helped train talented shinobi there. The second leader of the water village, a competitor to the third rock hideout boss in a strong town, shows how powerful they are. Chojuro also is one of the big Kages from that time.
Naruto has hidden villages, which show how deep the series is. Each village tells a special story about power, growth, and legacy. Starting from the strength of Konohagakure to Kirigakure’s recovery under new leaders, these villages keep reasserting what this series is all about.
The holiday season is here, and in celebration, we’ve rounded up ten very well-known anime characters to evaluate how we think they’d spend their Christmas celebrations, no matter just how quirky or chaotic these celebrations may be. Follow along below for some of the most fitting holiday scenarios starring everyone’s favorite characters.
Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia)
Deku is a very friendly guy, so there’s no doubt that he’d be celebrating the Holiday Season surrounded by family and friends. However, when it comes to Deku’s status as the number one All Might fanboy, he doesn’t play around — of course, the people closest to him will be well aware and gift him all of the latest All Might merch that Deku’s little hero-to-be heart desires.
He’d definitely forget to try any of the meal food or festive snacks, and instead, just take to frantically decorating his bedroom with all of the new All Might aesthetics he’d gained…and by the time Deku would finally be done putting up his new decorations, well, everyone would be long gone and headed home for the night.
Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto/Boruto)

Naruto has kids of his own now, so for his holiday celebration, he didn’t even hesitate to go HoHoHokage mode and throw on a Santa costume. Trying to emulate the big guy, Naruto grabbed a bunch of gifts and slung them in a bag over his shoulder, attempting to wiggle down the chimney to bring joy to Boruto and Himawari.
Unfortunately for Naruto, he got stuck halfway down and needed not one, but several pairs of hands to drag his now soot-covered self back out into the open.
Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto/Boruto)
Image Source: Studio Pierrot via Twinfinite
It seems for once in Sarada’s life, Sasuke has returned home to spend the holiday season with his family; what a rare occasion! Wait, something seems off about Sasuke, but we just can’t put our finger on it….he couldn’t… he wouldn’t, would he?
Please tell us that this isn’t just another shadow clone sent in place of the real Sasuke… sigh. We knew we were expecting too much with the idea of this guy being a family man for once. Maybe next year?
Light Yagami (Death Note)
Image source: Studio Madhouse via Twinfinite
Light Yagami seems to have turned a new leaf for the holiday season. He’s thrown away his Death Note for good, waved goodbye to the apple-obsessed Ryuk, wrapped a bunch of heartfelt gifts for his family, and embraced festive cheer in full. From the bottom of his heart, Light here would love to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.
However, to do so, he just requires one little thing; your full name. Don’t ask questions, just trust the process… He’s only going to use it for Christmas card purposes. Light is definitely not digging up the ‘ol Death Note from his drawer, not at all.
Hinata Shoyo (Haikyuu!!)
Image Source: Production I.G. via Twinfinite
Anyone who is familiar with Haikyuu!! knows just how much Hinata loves his food. When the Christmas feast arrives at the table, Hinata here is first to scurry over and fill his plate to the brim with anything and everything he can get his grubby little hands on.
Don’t worry, though; Hinata is able to wolf this entire meal down with ease in a couple of minutes, tops. And then following this, he continues to wolf down several more meals on behalf of every other person in the room.
Eren Jaeger (Attack on Titan)
Image Source: Studio WIT via Twinfinite
Thanks to all the crazy timelines and paths shenanigans, I’d like to imagine Eren celebrating Christmas by living through the memories of his younger self and racing Mikasa and Armin to the tree (except this time, it’s a Christmas tree).
Although, if that one doesn’t seem all that appealing for Mr. Founding/Attack Titan over here, he can always jump back into the stomach of the very Santa-looking Bearded Titan that chomped his arm up and ate him near the beginning of the show. Poor Santa Titan, he just wanted a bite to eat on his big day…
Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach)
Image Source: Studio Pierrot via Twinfinite
Ichigo Kurosaki finally gets to take a break from his duties as a substitute Soul Reaper and sit down with his family to celebrate Christmas. He’s spent the morning exchanging gifts with everyone, and now they’re all sitting around the table ready to dig into a beautifully cooked meal.
Until…what’s that Ichigo can hear coming down the chimney? Santa Claus, perhaps? Oh no… it’s yet another Hollow, isn’t it? Well, it seems Soul Reapers can never truly snag a day off the job with success.
Tanjiro Kamado (Demon Slayer)
Tis the season for giving, and even Tanjiro Kamado appears to be a gift recipient this time around. It seems there’s a big box under the Christmas tree with his name on the gift tag. Tanjiro sees this and is genuinely surprised — a present? For him? Wow, and such a big box, too! Almost big enough for someone to fit inside.
Wait, what’s this? Surprise! There was someone inside, Nezuko to be precise. It’s Nezuko, Nezuko is Tanjiro’s gift (and she’s still a demon at that). Nezuko also nods furiously in the background, her mere presence is indeed a gift in itself, and her big brother should be thankful.
Death the Kid (Soul Eater)
Image Source: Studio Bones via Twinfinite
Kid needs everything to be perfect for the holiday season, and he will be taking the decorating and aesthetics extremely seriously. The Christmas tree isn’t symmetrical! It has one too many ornaments on the left side and the lights are wound one too many times around the right side — what disgusting filth! How could those animals find this okay?
It’s disgusting, despicable, horrid! Don’t even get him started on the uneven number of gifts below the tree, now he has to go and buy more to ensure it’s a perfectly symmetrical evenly arranged number.
Roronoa Zoro (One Piece)
Image Source: Studio WIT via Twinfinite
Zoro, Zoro, Zoro….well, at first this guy completely forgot that Christmas was even a thing that was currently happening. And then finally when he did remember that Sanji had planned to cook a special dinner for the occasion, he got lost trying to make his way there. Talk about taking a classic Zoro approach to the holidays, right?
Perhaps he finally does make it in time to clean up the leftovers and got to sleep with a full belly, or perhaps he finally shows up days later in festive attire, leaving everyone confused. I guess we’ll have to wait ’til next year to find out.

Grace Black
Grace is a writer and digital artist from New Zealand with a love for fiction and storytelling. Grace has been writing for Twinfinite for one year and in the games industry for two years. She’s an enthusiast of everything spooky, an occasional anime enjoyer, and a die-hard Ghost-Type Pokemon fangirl. Her favorite video games include Overwatch 2, Life is Strange, The Last of Us, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Pokemon – all of which she will never tire of.
The world of Naruto is vast, including several different villages which each host a variety of different Clans with unique Jutsu. Because of the sheer number of characters in Naruto, some shinobi are often overshadowed by their peers, leaving the poor souls as forgotten and underrated compared to others.
We’ve rounded up ten of these individuals so we can give them the appreciation they deserve.
Shino Aburame
Poor Shino, not even Naruto was able to recognize him after returning to the Hidden Leaf Village following the three-year time skip. This bug-wielding ninja is so often overshadowed by the rest of the Konoha eleven, even his teammates, Kiba and Hinata. As a member of the Aburame Clan, Shino’s body is a host for insects that enable his various Jutsu.
However, Shino’s insects are extremely unique, as he harvested some of his adoptive brother, Torune’s insects, and used them to refine his bug-breeding techniques. This eventually resulted in a new beetle with traces of both insects, a unique species that Shino created. Shino has immense control over his insects and has proven himself to be extremely intelligent and capable in combat on the few opportunities he’s had to prove himself. It’s only a shame he didn’t get more time to shine.
Ino Yamanaka
Ino Yamanaka is often cast aside by fans and considered weak, as her physical strength doesn’t compare to other ninja in the show. However, Ino is extremely strong with the use of her Mind Transfer Jutsu, a technique that enables her to enter the mind of an opponent and completely immobilize them. Ino came in absolutely clutch during the Shinobi World War, as she was able to use her Mind Transfer Jutsu to completely restrain Obito and the Ten-Tails, which was impossible for every other Shinobi on the battlefield.
On top of her sharp mind and technical ability, Ino is also fully trained in Medical Ninjutsu as one of Tsunade’s apprentices. This proves that although she may lack huge physical strength, or flashy, explosive abilities, Ino has mastered more than one area of Ninjutsu, and has played a part in saving the lives of many individuals. Give this lady the recognition she deserves!
Yamato
Yamato is the individual who stepped in as a temporary Sensei to Team 7 when Kakashi was bedridden and unable to continue the role for some time. Unfortunately for poor Yamato, that’s all some fans ever really see him as — a less memorable Kakashi Hatake. However, Yamato is an extremely fascinating character with a deeply sad backstory. I don’t know how people wouldn’t want to cheer for the guy, all he wants is to be respected and appreciated by his fellow Team 7 companions, as proven in his time in Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Not only is Yamato a very lovable character, but he is also very valuable and powerful as a shinobi. Firstly, he spent most of his childhood in the Root division of Anbu as a child, refining his powers to excel many shinobi older than him. On top of this, Yamato has access to the rare Wood Release Kekkei Genkai, derived from the DNA of Hashirama Senju. With the use of Hashirama Senju’s necklace, Yamato can even amplify his powers to control a Tailed Beast, such as when he restrained Naruto’s Four-Tailed Cloak in a breeze.
This is no small feat and was one of the main reasons Hashirama was made Hokage in the first place, which only proves Yamato’s power. It’s a shame he didn’t get more recognition, or a big defining moment to prove the extent of his abilities.
Kurenai Yuhi
Poor Kurenai, she was done so dirty… Unfortunately for this Jonin, most fans remember her for her pitiful attempt to take on Itachi Uchiha in Genjutsu, which ultimately failed very badly. This made Kurenai somewhat of a joke to the Naruto fandom, and beyond this moment she never really got a chance to redeem herself or make a comeback, as she was soon written out of the main story after getting pregnant with Asuma’s child, Mirai Sarutobi.
What many fail to remember, is that at the time of her battle against Itachi, Kurenai was a Jonin, a Sensei to Team 8, and considered to be the most powerful Genjutsu user in the Hidden Leaf. This is a title that would not be earned with ease, meaning that Kurenai was very powerful — she just never got a chance to show it off. Instead, this poor woman was stomped into the mud by Itachi, who was an absolute all-rounder beast at the time. It’s not that Kurenai was weak, but that Itachi was a shinobi who surpassed the skill levels of most other ninja in his lifetime.
Apart from her Genjutsu skills, Kurenai was also proven to be extremely caring and kind, going out of her way to take Hinata Hyuga under her wing when Hiashi cast her aside. Honestly, as much as I love Mirai and the fact that Asuma lives on through his daughter, Kurenai had so much potential. It was a shame to see her story pan out the way it did, she deserved to at least have a few key moments of badassery before she was benched.
Konan
Even though Konan has the chance to show off her abilities on multiple occasions, many fans fail to recognize just how lethal she could have been had she lived on to the end. Not only does Konan have a unique Jutsu in the form of her Paper Techniques, but she is also incredibly intelligent, resourceful, and perceptive.
Konan was able to formulate a plan to take down Tobi and executed it to perfection in combat against him — something very few shinobi would have been able to achieve. Through her smarts and techniques, Konan overcomes Kamui, forcing Obito (Tobi) to use Izanagi to take her down, as she would have otherwise been successful in her plan. After being touched by Naruto’s ideals and abandoning the Akatsuki to fight for peace in his favor, Konan was fiercely loyal, even willing to bravely sacrifice her life in her attempt to take down Tobi.
Konan was truly badass right to the end, too. As far as she knew, she was going up against Madara Uchicha, which made her fierce bravery and intellect even more impressive. She didn’t even bat an eye and instead put everything on the line. Konan’s entire storyline and character are one of the most impressive in the entire Naruto franchise, so this Hidden Rain ninja deserves much more limelight and love from the fanbase.
Suigetsu Hozuki
Suigetsu is certainly an underrated shinobi within the Naruto franchise. Sure, he accompanies Sasuke during Shippuden, and Sasuke wouldn’t tolerate any weakling by his side. However, the extent of Suigetsu’s abilities is barely touched upon, which leaves him in the shadows quite a bit, despite having some very unique and powerful abilities.
Suigetsu is capable of using secret Water Release techniques to turn his body to liquid, change his body shape and the size of his limbs, and perform Water Jutsu without the need for Hand Signs. Suigetsu also shows formidable skill with the Kubikiribocho sword, which he was able to use to defend Sasuke and hold his own against A and Killer B; this shark boy certainly packs a punch.
Anko Mitarashi
Anko Mitarashi is a Tokubutsu Jonin and ex-apprentice of Orochimaru, capable of using Snake Jutsu. After being introduced as one of the instructors during the Chunin exams, Anko, unfortunately, had very little screen time following this and was written out of a lot of the Shippuden storyline, even missing out on the Shinobi World War while being captured by Kabuto.
This is very disappointing, as Anko is a very capable ninja, and had a high level of power, yet very little chance to portray this. Also, let’s not forget that Orochimaru hand-picked her as his apprentice during her youth, meaning she has always shown an impressive level of skill as a shinobi.
Shizune
Shizune is the apprentice to Tsunade, yet she spends so much time running around as her assistant once the latter takes on the role of Hokage, that Shizune doesn’t get a huge number of chances to show off her skills. Shizune is a Jonin-level shinboi and one whom Jiraiya had enough faith in to allow her to take on Kabuto, with the latter even acknowledging Shizune’s skills during a confrontation with Orochimaru and Tsunade.
On top of Shizune’s skills with toxins, weapons, and her unique Poison Mist Jutsu, she also has refined Medical Ninjutsu skills as a result of her time training as Tsunade’s apprentice. Alongside her skills, Shizune also has a sharp mind, leading her to remain focused and observant. This was largely beneficial in the Great Ninja War, where Shizune was responsible for determining links between the army of White Zetsu and Hashirama Senju.
Haku
Haku was one of the first formidable enemies that Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke went up against. Haku was an orphaned child from within the Hidden Mist Village, and a wielder of a unique Kekkei Genkai called Ice Release. After encountering Zabuza, Haku joined him as his apprentice, which further developed his skills throughout the years. Haku’s most formidable skill, however, was his unparalleled speed. Haku was so fast in combat that even Sasuke was unable to track his movements without the use of his Sharingan, which proves just how intense Haku’s agility was.
Thanks to Zabuza’s former Anbu training, detailed information regarding human physiology was passed down to Haku. This enabled Haku to take out opponents with a single Senbon acupuncture strike, causing immediate death. On top of Haku’s sheer speed and precision in his abilities, he was extremely observant and intelligent, and at only fifteen years old. Haku was an absolute beast who threw Team 7 off for the majority of their fight; just imagine if he’d been given the opportunity to keep living, growing, and adapting his skills throughout Shippuden.
Kimimaro
Kimimaro was the last surviving member of the Kaguya Clan and the leader of the Sound Five. Kimimaro has the powerful Shikotsumyaku Technique, allowing him to manipulate and weaponize the bones of his own body. Most significantly, Kiminaro’s powers were so great that Orochimari had identified him to be his next vessel.
Kimimaro was able to defeat hundreds of Naruto’s Nine-Tailed Shadow Clones with ease, and fought against Naruto, Lee, and Gaara one after the other, bearing a Chakra power that was so strong, it could be visualized by the naked eye. Unfortunately, Kimimaro ultimately succumbed to his terminal illness, moments before he was to kill Gaara.
Had Kimimaro not died in the middle of this fight due to his body giving out on him, then he very likely would have succeeded in killing Gaara, who went on to become Kazekage not much longer. Is this not an indicator of just how brutal Kimimaro’s power was? I certainly think so!

The Naruto franchise has a story spanning over 26 seasons total between both the Naruto and Naruto Shippuden series. With such a high number of seasons, it’s only natural that there have been some iconic and memorable opening credits throughout. We’ve rounded up fifteen of the best, based on music, animation, and imagery/symbolism to the show, so tighten your ninja headbands and follow along below to relive these moments.
15. Seishun Kyousoukyoku
Seishun Kyousoukyoku is the Naruto opening that revolves around the Sasuke retrieval ark, with Naruto, Shikamaru, Neji, Choji, and Kiba forming a special squad to try to track him down and bring him back to his home in the Hidden Leaf. There are a lot of really interesting angles used as the team runs and jumps through the trees, and the song portrays the perfect sense of urgency that this retrieval mission has bestowed on the Genin.
There’s also some nice symbolism going on with Sasuke’s hand grabbing his Ninja headband when surrounded by the influence of Sakura and Naruto, and then letting this slip when the dark influences of Itachi and Orochimaru step in. Overall, this is a very solid opening for one of the most interesting arks in the original Naruto series and a very memorable song for many.
14. Re:member
Re:member is definitely one of the most memorable openings within the original Naruto series, utilizing a very upbeat and catchy song to help set the mood on the various side missions and one off adventures to be explored. While it may not be the most complex or deep opening in Naruto history, don’t let this fool you.
Re:member has a brilliant fight sequence during this opening, panning around each of the Konoha 12 Genin as they strike with a flurry of their special attacks. The use of silhouettes for villain such as Itachi and Orochimaru is also very interesting, creating feelings of mystery as they lurk from afar.
13. Toumei Datta Sekai
This opening often gets overlooked, as it’s a bit softer in comparison to others, which makes it a bit more forgettable when it comes to music. However, this is the opening for one of the best arks in Naruto Shippuden (the Pain Invasion), which utilizes unique perspective and depth within the fight sequences, showcasing the size difference between the various characters and where they are located within the battle.
This opening theme also dives into Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato’s backstories and the history of Jiraiya. This is the first opening that takes place after the heartbreaking death of Jiraiya, which makes the opening scene of him in a peaceful setting, writing his book, even more emotional. Furthermore, as this opening finally comes to a close, Jiraiya is seen signing off the end of his book, the story of Naruto, the hero after which our beloved Naruto Uzumaki was named after.
12. No Boy, No Cry
No Boy, No Cry is an absolute banger of a song and makes up one of the most memorable opening credits within the original Naruto series. This opening showcases the conflict between Naruto and Sasuke, with very gray and dismal coloring as Naruto struggles to find his footing again and fights to make Sasuke come to the understanding that Naruto cares about him and doesn’t want to lose their friendship; no matter how much they may have butted heads at the beginning.
Not only does this opening reference one of the best and most significant conflicts of Naruto’s story in his Genin youth, but the brief animations showing off the Konoha twelve are very well done and satisfying to watch with the punkish beat of No Boy, No Cry. Lastly, we even get an ominous little peek at villains such as the Akatsuki and Orochimaru’s Hidden Sound experiments, as the camera pans across the back of their robes and clothing, making this opening truly one to remember.
11. Guren
Guren is the 15th opening of Naruto Shippuen, taking place in the Great Ninja War ark. While the Guren song is extremely catchy, it’s the character symbolism and battle animation that make this opening so interesting. Most significantly, this opening portrays symbolism between three Generations of characters who all went through a journey from friends to enemies at some point during their lives with Hashirama and Madara, Kakashi and Obito, and Naruto and Sasuke.
While these parallels are certainly interesting and symbolic on their own, they are also nicely elevated by some fluid battle scenes, and camera pans that could give any longtime fan goosebumps. From the zoom-out from Naruto to reveal the Allied Shinobi Forces standing behind him in unison and support, to the pan across the various Hokage of the Leaf, Guren is a brilliant Naruto opening on all levels.
10. Niwaka Ame ni mo Makezu
Niwaka Ame ni mo Makezu not only has a super catchy beat and memorable vocals but the visuals of this opening that represent the chaos and intensity of the Great Ninja War are beautifully rendered, making this an opening to remember.
Right when the chorus drops, there’s an amazing fight sequence with the Kage against Madara, showcasing full dynamic displays of Tsunade, A, Gaara, Mei, and Onoki’s powers. Not to mention, there’s also a very special moment between Naruto and Kurama, hitting their Chakra together through a fist bump, establishing their bond together as partners now more than ever.
9. Blood Circulator
Blood Circulator is a brilliant song with very catchy electric guitar riffs, which is already enough to make it stand out. While the imagery for this opening sequence may not be as detailed as previous openings, the more subtle movements and simplistic approach just so happen to be perfectly matched up and synched to the music, creating a very satisfying opening credit. Plus, this is the opening for the final ark of the show featuring Kaguya Otsutsuki, which makes it hard to forget.
Watching everyone trapped and drowning in the darkness of Infinite Tsukiyomi and Naruto start to sink is rather worrisome, as almost every other opening portrays him fighting back, resilient as ever. However, watching Sasuke, Kakashi, and Sakura pull themselves out to fight back is the boost he needs, their spirit uplifting him just as his spirit has done for others time after time. This opening reinforces the close bond of Team 7, proving that even though they have numerous problems and differences, they will always lift one another in the end.
8. Closer
As lovable as Naruto is as the protagonist, Closer focuses on team Ino-Shika-Cho, specifically Shikamaru, after the tragic death of their Sensei, Asuma Sarutobi. Everything about this opening is perfection – the choice of music, the animation, the emotion portrayed on Shikamaru’s face, the way the Konoha 12 are shown to always back each other up, and the fight scenes against the Akatsuki.
The starting scene with all of the Konoha ninja shinobi turning their heads as the camera pans past them in the field of flowers is gorgeous, especially as these specific flowers have strong symbolism and representation of Asuma himself, and his relationship with Kurenai.
Following this, the dynamic movements of the Konoha 12 heading out together are extremely satisfying, before the chorus hits and the opening falls into battle scenes against Hidan and Kakuzu, the ones responsible for ending Asuma’s life. This emotional but uplifting opening just makes you want to root for Shikamaru and the Hiden Leaf ninja no matter what, and that’s quite a special feeling to have been created.
7. GO!!!
We are fighting dreamers! Right from the very first chord of the electric guitar, this opening brings back memories for many Naruto fans who started the show in their youth. GO!!! is an extremely catchy song, which certainly gets viewers pumped up for the action and chaos that is sure to come in the tales of Naruto in his Genin youth.
The stylistic choices of this opening are also extremely interesting, with panning across textured manga-styled panels, and then the various characters being animated into place within these panels, which is super satisfying and interesting to watch. This opening also manages to keep things very light-hearted and humorous as well as including enough action and snippets of mystery and badassery to get fans excited for what’s to come.
6. Haruka Kanata
The Chunin Exams ark is probably my favorite part of the entire Naruto storyline, and I partially have Haruka Kanata to thank for that. This song works perfectly for this section of the story, with gritty guitars and harsh vocals ringing out across a variety of character portraits and fight scenes. What makes this even more satisfying, is that the various character portraits and team compositions are synched up in time to the music.
The Chunin Exams is a hugely important moment for many characters other than Naruto, too, such as Lee, Gaara, Shikamaru, and Sakura, so seeing these references in the opening sequence is extremely satisfying. However, we not only get to see our beloved Konoha 12, but also the first glimpse of the Sand Siblings, Kabuto, and indicators that Orochimaru is lurking somewhere within this ark.
Lastly, the opening ends with a zoom out across a group of these characters, which indicates everyone is successful in completing the Chunin Exams. I didn’t realize this until I’d completed the ark, but looking back, it just makes me love Haruka Kanata even more.
5. Hero’s Come Back!!
After wrapping up Naruto and jumping into Naruto Shippuden, which takes place about three years later, the show would need the perfect song and opening track to make a great comeback; and boy, oh boy, did Hero’s Come Back!! deliver. This opening gives us the first sneak peek at the growing up everyone has done, complete with brand new designs for each character. The more rap-influenced music style is also completely different from any of the openings in Naruto, which makes this first Shippuden opening stand out even more.
A small smile appears on Naruto’s face as images of Kakashi, Sakura, Tsunade, and Jiraiya scroll beside him, almost indicating a thought of them. This shows he’s happy to be back in his village and return to those who have been counting on him. We’re all just as happy to have Naruto back at this point, too. I mean, how could we not be? Our beloved hero then takes off running back towards home, which is extremely heartwarming.
The opening then utilizes some unique and interesting sketchy animation and monochromatic film grain filters synched to the music, which is very eye-catching. However, the second verse is where things ramp up, giving an ominous look at the Akatsuki, and revealing the face of Deidara, one of the next villains from the organization that Naruto would be going up against first. Lastly, the opening closes off with Naruto rejoining his team, standing by Sakura and Kakashi’s side once more; a perfect end to the beginning of Naruto Shippuden’s opening credits.
4. Blue Bird
Blue Bird is hands-down one of the most recognized and beloved Naruto openings of all time, absolutely adored by fans of the show. However, what makes this opening even more impressive, is that this opening was mostly used for filler, which a lot of people tend to skip. Even though many filler openings are less favored or even unknown for this reason, Blue Bird still managed to make an impact on the Naruto fanbase, and for good reason.
Right around this opening is when fans will notice the animation quality kick things up a notch, with more dynamic and fluid movements, as well as clean picture quality. Naruto’s Blue Bird opening also ties into the name and lyrics of the song, with a blue silhouette of a bird flying around the monochromatic manga-like panels, transitioning into the full colored scene of Naruto falling, then fading into ying-yang symbolism with Sasuke, their personalities and stories representing this idea.
Blue feathers are continued to be used as scene transitions here and there throughout, until Naruto finally lands on his feet at the end, picking up a blue feather from the water to close things out. This was a unique take, as it’s not every day an anime will dedicate this much symbolism of their opening to the meaning and symbolism of the song involved.
3. Sign
Sign will forever be a very special opening to many Naruto fans, representing one of the most emotional and moving arks of the franchise. The opening begins with beloved memories of Jiraiya and Itachi, as the ark heavily focuses on Jiraiya’s battle with pain, the backstory of Yahiko, Nagao, and Konan, and Sasuke’s battle with Itachi.
The song itself is brilliant, and everything this ark deserves to represent itself – not too loud and harsh, but instead a gentle track that builds in sound as it progresses. Furthermore, the battle animations in this opening are absolutely gorgeous. From the reflective glow of Sasuke’s Lightning Release to the montage of Pain and Jiraiya charging towards one another through the relentless downpour of the Hidden Rain Village, everything is executed to perfection, which adds so much more meaning and emotion to this ark in general.
2. Silhouette
Silhouette blew my mind a bit the first time I witnessed it as an opening sequence. Once again, Naruto claimed yet another brilliant track for the opening credit, which already points the sequence in the right direction. However, it is the symbolism and the animation that truly make this one so special. This opening animation very much reflects the pasts and journeys of the involved characters, portraying their changes as they grow up with individuals such as Madara, and Obito.
However, the most powerful scene by far, is right when the song is hitting the chorus. Young Naruto begins running, determined to become a ninja and bypass the stigma and fears everyone holds against him. As he runs, we see him age throughout the years his, finally reaching his current appearance. This was a breathtaking moment, especially for fans who have been there since the very beginning, cheering Naruto on from his youth.
This opening is also very special because finally, after everything, we get to see Sasuke and Naruto fight side by side, standing together as allies once more; which is a goal Naruto has been striving towards ever since Sasuke stepped foot outside of the Leaf. Lastly, watching Naruto extend his hand to Obito, and Obito see his younger self in Naruto’s spirit is such a beautiful moment that many fans adore. Silhouette will forever be an incredible Naruto opening, and is the perfect summary of the incredibly important Ninja War event.
1. Diver
Lastly, we have Diver; the Naruto opening that I consider to be an absolute artistic masterpiece. Everything about this opening is stunning, with heavy symbolism in the imagery that portrays the character’s struggles, inner conflicts, and goals. The scene begins with Naruto crashing into the water, sinking deeper, and deeper, as the screen is washed out to monotone black and white.
As Naruto sinks, he can see various villains from the Akatsuki in the water, staring at him; these very people are the threats that are weighing him down. And just when they’re already causing him to sink, Sasuke hits him with Chidori, effectively drowning him and turning the water a bloody red, which resembles the constant pain Sasuke inflicts on him throughout the journey and their severed bond.
However, just when things look grim for Naruto, hands begin to appear on his back – from Sakura, Kakashi, Sai, Yamato, Iruka, and other members of the Konoha 12. Everyone who has grown to care for and believe in Naruto, is now pushing him back up to the surface in a huge rush; picking him up when he’s kicked down, just as he’s always fought to do for them. Naruto soars into the air, ties his Ninja headband, and then looks down to notice Sasuke still in the darkness, drowning under the water – but with nobody to lift him back to the surface.
Without hesitation, Naruto dives straight back in for Sasuke, just as he always will in the show, sacrificing everything to try and help, no matter how badly Sasuke treats him. This is an absolutely beautiful opening for Naruto, telling such a story through subtle hints and imagery. Unlike many others, there was no need for a clash of action or crazy intense music, and that’s why Diver will forever remain incredibly impressive and stunning to so many fans.

Anime and manga publisher Viz Media just made a handful of really big anime series freely available to watch on YouTube. If you’re looking for a good entry point into some really prolific shows, this is an excellent opportunity to dive into some stone-cold classics.
The company has uploaded six of the hit shows it owns rights for to YouTube and compiled them into helpful playlists. Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, Inuyasha, Mr. Osomatsu, Naruto, and Sailor Moon are all there, most in their entirety, for your viewing pleasure. Notably, these are the Japanese versions of the shows with English subtitles, so if you’re a person who likes to watch dubbed anime, this might not be what you’re looking for. But if you like to keep it original, there’s a lot to dig into here. I’ve personally always wanted to watch Death Note after hearing about it through cultural osmosis over the years, and even though I tend to prefer dubs, this is too good an opportunity to waste.
Let’s run down each show:
Death Note
Death Note is the shortest anime on the list, with only 37 episodes across its one season. It centers around the titular Death Note, a notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside. A teenager named Light Yagami finds the book and uses it to kill people he deems immoral and unworthy of life; this string of seemingly unstoppable, random murders eventually draws the attention of L, an eccentric, brilliant detective, leading to an electrifying, supernatural game of cat-and-mouse.
Hunter x Hunter
Hunter x Hunter follows Gon Freecss, a boy attempting to follow in his absentee father’s footsteps as a Hunter, heroes who track down rare creatures, seek treasures, and hunt down other people as well. Hunter x Hunter is famous for being near universally lauded by all who watch it, turning them into proselytizing advocates who really, really think you should check it out. The show is one of the lengthier ones Viz has put up on YouTube, with 148 episodes available across its six arcs. But there are a few that are even longer. Such as…
Inuyasha
Rumiko Takahashi’s Inuyasha follows the titular half-demon as he joins a high school girl named Kagome Higurashi to recover the shards of a shattered Shikon Jewel. A huge hit on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block back in the day, the show’s seven seasons come in at 197 episodes.
Mr. Osomatsu
Mr. Osomatsu goes way back to the sixties, when Fujio Akatsuka’s comedic manga was a cultural phenomenon in Japan. This anime adaptation is much newer, dating from 2015. It’s worth noting that Mr. Osomatsuis the only show Viz has uploaded on YouTube that doesn’t include its entire run. The currently uploaded first two seasons of the animated family comedy show make up 50 out of the series’ 75-episode run.
Naruto
At 220 episodes, Narutois nearly the biggest time sink Viz has put up on YouTube. The five-season show makes up the first Part of Naruto, which follows the titular character as he attends a school to become a ninja. These 220 episodes are followed by Naruto: Shippuden, which is another 500 episodes, and another sequel show called Boruto that follows Naruto’s child. So you’re opening up Pandora’s Box if you decide to sit down and watch this one.
Sailor Moon
However, the show with the most episodes in this (initial?) wave of uploads is 1990s bishoujo phenom Sailor Moon, which comes in with a whopping 238 videos across its five seasons. It’s the classic Magical Girl anime, and follows a group of teenagers who turn into superheroes and do superhero shit. She’s the icon. She is the moment. And her show is all readily available to watch on YouTube, free of charge. (The handful of specials and later movies are not currently available, though.)
If you’re not an anime connoisseur, there’s some really great entry points here, but if you’re a real sicko and have already seen these shows, you now have a real easy way to revisit them. Speaking for myself, I’m about to cue up some Death Note. It’s time I finally checked it out.
While we’ve known for a while that New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson loved anime, things are about to get a little more serious with the release of an upcoming pair of sneakers.
Nike have announced that Williamson, who has his own signature shoe with the company (the Zion 1), will soon be lending his name as part of a collaboration to an anime-themed pair of sneakers from a different line, with a pair of Air Jordan 37s to be released in a “Rasengan” colourway.
A rasengan is the name of the “spinning ball of chakra formed and held in the palm of the user’s hand” in Naruto, a series Williamson loves so much he spoke about it in depth during an interview with GQ last year, calling it his “north star”:
Williamson talks about Naruto with the same reverence with which other NBA players talk about the Bible—it brings comfort and clarity in equal parts. Over the course of this past year—an unusually tumultuous one in his otherwise starry career—Naruto was his north star.
Featuring spiky yellow on the tongues (an allusion to Naruto’s signature hairstyle), the Air Jordan 37 includes monochromatic serene blue uppers. Claw marks strike the ankle pads, while the tongues are emblazoned with metallic silver – inspired by Naruto’s forehead armour. Naruto’s catchphrase だってばよ! (‘believe it!’) is inscribed on both tongues, and the Rasengan chakra orbs adorn the insoles.
Accessible for all Safe Haven prioritizes your needs with flexible and individuated substance abuse treatment, specifically opioid & alcohol addiction.
The Rasengan Zion x Naruto x Jordan 37s will be releasing on February 20, and being a general release model of Jordan might actually be fairly easy to get your hands on. I’d expect Zion will also be wearing them on the court around the same time as well.
I don’t really care if an artificial intelligence system called Skynet takes over the world like it did in Terminator. However, I do have a problem with the rise in AI “art” and what it means for human artists. There’s a guy trying to make money off of an AI-generated children’s book. A real-world major book publisher is trying to use AI cover art for an upcoming novel. If that wasn’t bad enough, these AI monsters are trying to come after our fanfiction. I’m telling you now, that is a line you do not cross.
Are we doomed to be flooded with strange AI art creations with no legal recourse? Earlier this year, the tide seemed to be going that way when the U.S. Copyright Office gave copyright protections to a writer who used AI-generated art in their comic book. Now the Copyright Office is reviewing the decision because the law states: “To qualify as a work of ‘authorship’ a work must be created by a human being. Works that do not satisfy this requirement are not copyrightable.” It looks like we may already have a law in place to battle the evil AI artist—and we have a monkey named Naruto to thank for it.
A selfie that actually did something good
In 2015, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sued photographer David Slater on behalf of a monkey named “Naruto.” PETA claimed Slater was profiting unfairly off of the artistic work of Naruto. Years before the lawsuit, Slater had visited Indonesia where he took photos of endangered Celebes crested macaques. At one point, the monkeys got a hold of his camera and “took selfies” before Slater could get it back. Some of the resulting selfies—including a close-up picture of a smiling Naruto—Slater opted to sell to various publishing outlets.
PETA argued that the copyright of the photos (and any profits made from them) should belong to Naruto and the other crested macaques instead of Slater. In 2016, a U.S. judge ruled that the copyright law didn’t cover non-human entities and dismissed the case. The Copyright Office’s laws, revised in 2014, say it does “not register works produced by ‘nature, animals, or plants.”” Basically, the accepted legal standpoint is this: human authorship is critical to creating lawful copyright.
With that established, the U.S. Copyright Office has used this as a precedent to prevent any AI-generated works from being copyrighted. Someone could prompt and even sell the AI-generated art, but they cannot legally reserve sole rights to the works. All AI art would then be considered public domain for anyone to use in whatever way they please. So, when you think of all those crypto bros who can’t make money off of AI-generated art, remember to thank a monkey for the joy you feel.
