CBD crime: Cakeshop, pub, cathedral hit in Napier vandalism – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Police are investigating at least three attacks on buildings in the Napier CBD early on Wednesday morning.

In separate incidents, targeting front entrances, with no entry gained and all thought to be between 3am and 4am, a man using a rubbish bin smashed a window at fledgling business Cuteney’s Cakes in Dalton St, while a beam was smashed into a window at The Rose Irish Pub in Hastings St and another window beside the Brown St entrance of Waiapu Cathedral.

CCTV captured two of the offences being committed, but it was not clear if the same person was involved or if the incidents were related.

Boutique cake-shop proprietor Courtney Booth has had her business up and running just four months and was stunned when she was advised of the damage, but ultimately asked “Why ?” when it became apparent that the hit, by an apparently shoeless man at 3am, appeared to be nothing other than a random assault by an angry man.

It was to have been the shop’s first Wednesday open, a trial run for Valentine’s Day next week, and the doors were closed for the day. A recent ram-raid victim provided their no-longer-needed boarding-up frame to cover the frontage until a glass firm had the window replaced by mid-afternoon.

The cake shop would reopen for its market-friendly midday-8pm hours on Thursday. It opens 10am-9pm Friday…

A power outage took out supply to a chunk of Napier’s central business district during a busy retail period with passengers from two cruise ships in town.

The unscheduled outage hit late morning on Monday and was caused by a suspected cable fault, according to Unison.

The outage started at 10.41am and power began to return to some businesses by 11.15am, but power supply continued to fluctuate in the city for the next 45 minutes.

The outage affected about 200 properties on Dickens St, Dalton St, Station St, Emerson St, Hastings St and Marine Parade, among others.

Some shops and eateries were without power for over an hour. All properties had power returned by noon.

The outage hit as passengers from two cruise ships, the 3100-passenger cruise ship Grand Princess and the 2770-passenger Resilient Lady, were in town.

The owner of Kolachi cafe on Emerson St, Jaz Singh, said it was tough timing, and they were forced to close while the power was out and eventually opted not to reopen for the day as it was one of the last areas to have power restored.

“We have no other option than to close at this point because we don’t know when power is returning,” Singh said during the outage, which hit his cafe for more than an hour.

  • Emerson St revamp: Penny for your thoughts on the Napier CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Emerson St revamp: Penny for your thoughts on the Napier CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The Napier City Council plans to start design work in its proposed Emerson Street CBD revamp early in the New Year, although it is yet to finish the consultation.

The Revitalise Emerson pop-up shop has another week to run at 247 Emerson St, with feedback sought from anyone interested in sharing their thoughts.

It will be the biggest rethink of the shopping centre in the 30 years since it was transformed into a pedestrian shopping precinct, with single-lane vehicle access replacing the two-way traffic, from the days of the main-street drag.

Council’s City Activation lead Steph Kennard said that with some government funding the council is keen to make the most of that opportunity and “do something really cool for the community”.

The work includes gathering data around the movement of people, vehicles and micro-transport options like bikes and scooters, with interviews, observations and video analysis by a local research company.

Meanwhile, the week-long Squares in the City, focused on Clive and Memorial squares, is in full swing and the Napier Night Fiesta series starts its 2023-2024 season on December 8.

We Are Open campaign gets behind Napier CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The We Are Open campaign launched a few weeks ago to support Napier businesses.

Napier City Business Inc (NBCI) is thinking outside the square with its latest campaign to encourage shoppers into the CBD.

We Are Open was launched this month with a video showing business owners from different cultures saying “We are open” in their own language.

“It was so cool. We wanted to send a very clear message, in a respectful and empathetic way. It was really easy to get everyone on board and we were so lucky it was a gorgeous blue-sky Hawke’s Bay day,” says NCBI general manager Pip Thompson.

She says the campaign launch aimed to promote the people behind the message.

“We wanted to send the message that we have culturally diverse people who live and work in Napier and make it the wonderful place it is.”

She says retailers and hospitality have had three “really dented” years.

“I think everyone has just been hanging in there waiting for a really good season. This year was supposed to be that really good season.”

Thompson believes a national communications focus on Napier city being the heart of Cyclone Gabrielle hasn’t helped.

“It was a rural disaster that did impact people from Napier’s CBD, but the CBD was unaffected.”

She says when a tourist off a cruise ship asked her how long it had taken to clean up the CBD after the cyclone, she had an “aha” moment.

“I realised this was what the world had…
