  • 5 Things to Know About New Jets Defensive Line Coach Karl Dunbar

    [ad_1]

Ties to the Bayou State and the Steel City and Multiple Coaching Stops, Including ’12-14 with the Green & White

    Randy Lange

Here are five things to know about Karl Dunbar, named by Jets head coach Aaron Glenn as the team’s new defensive line coach:

    Bayou Through and Through

Karmichael MacKenzle “Karl” Dunbar has deep Louisiana roots. He was born in Opelousas, LA, in 1967, starred in football and basketball up the road at Plaisance High School, and was a three-year starter and was named second-team All-SEC as a senior defensive end at LSU. He began his coaching career at two Louisiana high schools, including his alma mater, then moved to Nicholls State in Thibodaux, LA, and had two short stints as an assistant coach at LSU.

Further, his wife Pamela was a University of Louisiana at Lafayette graduate and their three children all had outstanding college careers in their chosen fields … at Louisiana universities.

There could be more LA connections for Dunbar, but we won’t Geaux there anymore today.

    Pitt Stops

Dunbar’s pro playing career began, in a manner of speaking, with Pittsburgh, which made him its eighth-round pick (209th overall) of the 1990 NFL Draft. We say “in a manner of speaking” because he never played with the Steelers, sitting out ’90 with a foot fracture from late in his last college season and being a final cut in the summer of ’91.

He played for New Orleans in 1993 and Arizona in ’94-95 along with one-year stays with Orlando in the WLAF and the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe. His NFL career totals are 21 games played and one start. He had no pro sacks but acquired the knowledge to become a coach who has made his name in the pro game as a polisher of young talent, some into potentially big sackers.

Dunbar obviously didn’t blame the Steelers for the quiet start to his pro career as he joined Mike Tomlin’s staff in 2018 and contributed to their top-10 NFL run defenses in ’18, ’22 and ’24 and to the league’s No. 1 sacking team with 392 QB takedowns combined from ’18-25.

    Transition to “Safety”

Before fully committing to a coaching career, Dunbar, a criminal justice major at LSU, served as an undercover narcotics officer for the Opelousas Police Department. He was very good at his jobhe earned the nickname of :the “Human Battering Ram”for his ability to break down doors and assisted in about 60 drug-related arrests. He also was targeted by for hits by local drug dealers and was involved in gunfire during a drug bust in 1996.

Dunbar was unhurt in the shootout, but Pamela insisted he get himself out of harm’s way, and thus a safer career in coaching football was born, starting with Opelousas HS.

The Jets and a Few Others

Dunbar’s coaching climb went from major college stops at LSU (of course) and Oklahoma State to the NFL. He began his pro coaching tour with Chicago in 2004 and had other assistant positions with the Vikings, Jets and Bills, before a two-year return to the SEC with Alabama and his longer tenure with the Steelers.

His coaching superpower has been to help young D-lines and D-linemen move up in class. As a result, he’s provided his input for the careers of such as the Vikings’ Jared Allen and the Steelers’ T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward.

And in his first tour with the Jets, under HC Rex Ryan from 2012-14, he helped get the promising playing careers of first-round draft picks Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson revved up, with Richardson being named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and Wilkerson voted AP second-team All-Pro in 2013.

    A Lifelong Cause

Dunbar was diagnosed in seventh grade with the skin condition vitiligo, which causes a loss of melanin in patches across the skin and has no cure. He embraced the condition, has said he views it as a “blessing,” and has advocated for vitiligo awareness.

He has partnered with the American Skin Association to highlight the condition’s psychological effects, especially and young people’s self-esteem and with Coolibar, which specializes in sun-protective clothing, in starting his own foundation. For his efforts, Dunbar was presented with the ASA’s inaugural Trailblazer Award in 2013.

Millbrook Magnet High educator named Wake County Public School System 2024 Teacher of the Year

    [ad_1]

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) — A teacher at Millbrook Magnet High School was named 2024 Wake County Public School System Teacher of the Year on Monday evening.

Ryan Berglund has been a Sustainable Agriculture Academy teacher at Millbrook since July 2019.

He started teaching Career and Technical Education after working as a welder and equipment fabricator.

He is also a graduate of Millbrook High.

When sharing his approach to teaching, Berglund wrote, “Our students are able to build some amazing projects that show their true understanding of the objectives in the course. I always tell my students, ‘I will not be there in the real world to tell you how to build it, you will have to figure it out.’ This takes their understanding to a new level.”

Berglunf holds a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education from the University of Mount Olive but his secret weapon is that he is the only agriculture teacher in North Carolina who is an AWS Certified Welding Inspector.

Because of his unique qualifications, he can provide his students with a welding certification that industry professionals equate to passing the bar exam to become a lawyer. Under his mentorship, 64 students have become certified welders ready to enter the workforce upon graduation.

He said that his experience with educational differences has shaped how he interacts with his students.

“In the third grade, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. In resource classes, I was able to see how students with disabilities have been given a different lens to look through that is not right or wrong, just different. This is a mindset I try to instill in all of my students,” Berglund said.

As Teacher of the Year, Berglund will get to participate in the Go Global NC international study program in the Netherlands during the summer of 2025. The trip is sponsored by the Dan Royster Memorial Teacher Award, in honor of a former WCPSS science teacher.

He will also have the opportunity to attend the Global Leaders Teacher Fellowship conference compliments of Participate Learning.

Berglund also received an engraved award, a $100 gift card to Angus Barn, a $1,000 check from sponsors, a weekend stay at the Umstead Hotel and Spa, a $100 Amazon gift card and even autographed hockey gear donated by the Carolina Hurricanes, among other prizes.

To top it off, he will also have the use of a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, compliments of Capital Chevrolet, for the next year.

Each one of those lives is special but sometimes a little furry friend climbs into our hearts. One of those feline friends is named Jersey Bagel.

When we first met Jersey Bagel it quickly became clear that her back two paws were in serious need of medical care. Jersey Bagel’s paws were terribly infected and the pain quickly became overwhelming for her fragile body. Our vets knew we needed to act quickly. APA! lept into action and after a double amputation, Jersey Bagel wasn’t doing well in the shelter. She stopped eating, drinking and couldn’t seem to relax. We reached out to one of our most committed fosters, Allie Wassel, to help Jersey Bagel transition to a home so she could have the best chance at recovery.

Check out what Allie had to say about her new roommate, Jersey Bagel!

What has been your favorite moment with Jersey Bagel?

When I brought her home, she stretched out on all her blankets and just started purring. She was so clearly happy to be out of the shelter and it was heartwarming to see her so relaxed and comfortable.

Why do you love fostering with APA!?

I remember exactly where I was when I decided to foster her. I was on a plane, and I got a text from a care team member that we were starting to have quality of life talks about Jersey Bagel. Our vets had fixed her feetsies, but she wouldn’t eat in the shelter, wasn’t healing and was absolutely miserable. I frantically reached out that I would foster her as soon as I got home. When I brought her home she immediately started eating and relaxed, she just hated the shelter THAT much. It’s for cats like Jersey Bagel that fostering makes all the difference.

What do you think would have happened to Jersey Bagel without APA!’s help?

Jersey Bagel is FeLV positive (Feline Leukemia Virus), ringworm positive and a double amputee. Therefore, she needed some pretty intense wound care. I padded my entire guest bathroom with blankets, yoga mats and made a special litter box for her “nubs” while they healed. I imagine many other shelters would have euthanized her for simply being FeLV+ before even considering other complications she came with.

(FeLV or Feline Leukemia Virus is often a death sentence in traditional shelters despite cats with FeLV being able to live for many happy years)

How do monthly donations from members help animals like Jersey Bagel have a second chance to thrive?

Your monthly donations make sure that our clinic has the funds to do special surgeries for kitties like Jersey, and all the follow-up medications she was on for weeks. We spent weeks on different medications trying to get her paws better before they had to make the unfortunate call to amputate both her back paws. But I am happy to say that after two months of healing, both her nubbins look great and she is a perfect kitty!

Jersey Bagel is currently available for adoption! If you have the space in your home for this wild girl, please reach out!

By becoming a Constant Companion today, you can help APA! reach our goal of 100,000 lives saved and grow to care for the next 100,000 animals in need. Because if there is one thing we know for sure, there will always be animals in need of our care and our love.

    Dec 20, 2021

It was a regular day at the shelter until evening came and the staff went to lock the Maddie’s® Cat Adoption Center’s doors.

Right outside, there was a cat carrier sitting alone with nothing but a note. As the carrier was shaking violently, a staff member went closer to see what was scribbled across the napkin. It read, “Dog flea treatment. Poisonous. Seizures.” As she looked into the carrier she could see two tabby cats in crisis.

The cats, later named Jingle and Jangle for the holiday season, were rushed to the clinic. The staff said they had never seen anything like it. They were convulsing uncontrollably and nothing was seeming to stop the seizing. Clinic staff spent hours trying various methods until finally at 4 a.m., they were able to stabilize the cats by putting them in a medically induced coma.

Flea medicine if used incorrectly can be deadly. Jingle and Jangle’s nervous systems were shutting down because their bodies couldn’t handle the dose. The clinic knew if they could get them stabilized after around 72 hours, they would have a good chance at recovering when the medicine worked its way out of their system.

Miraculously, a day later you would never recognize that these were the same cats that were left to fend for themselves, seizing uncontrollably. Once the flea medicine got through their system they returned to their perfectly playful selves. The siblings were soon adopted out together and now are named Blue and Penelope.

Their mom, Pattie had nothing but ‘purrfect’ things to say about the siblings. “Penelope loves naps on beds and chairs. Her favorite spot is getting on top of the refrigerator. She is a purr machine when she gets love. Blue is such a house cat. He will lay around all day long anywhere; on the floor, by the window, on a box just anywhere. He loves cuddles and is a chatterbox. They sleep, play, eat together and groom each other all day long,” Pattie said.

Blue and Penelope’s lives could have ended up so much differently if you didn’t support the work APA! does. Our clinic staff feels your support behind them every step of the way. Lost or stray animals usually go to the city shelter, but because of you, they didn’t think twice about staying until the early morning hours if it meant these lives were saved. Together with you, we can continue to lift the spirits of pets and humans alike as we all strive to save the ones that are left behind.

  • Austin Pets Alive! | Frankie’s Journey: Fleas to Fierce

Austin Pets Alive! | Frankie’s Journey: Fleas to Fierce

    [ad_1]

    Nov 20, 2021

It was a day like any other when a woman came into a local pet supply store and started talking to the staff.

She was crippled with worry about a little kitten in her neighborhood that was the last one left from a litter of outdoor cats. You see, this kitten wasn’t like the others. He was severely malnourished and paralyzed in his lower half, unable to control his bladder and bowels, and left to fend for himself.

The staff member went home to her girlfriend Cara, an avid animal rescuer, and told her the situation. They knew they needed to help because this life couldn’t help itself. So off they went to scoop up a little kitten they named Frankie. Cara wrote on the first day, “He can still move his legs but they are disfigured – we are hoping just from malnutrition and that they can be fixed. He had more fleas than I’ve ever seen on a kitten from all my years of animal rescue.”

When Frankie was examined, it was inconclusive as to what was causing his paralysis. What we do know is that Frankie was not born this way. His prior owner said, “One day he just seized up and never walked again.” Cara focused her energy on making Frankie stronger by making sure he was getting the nourishment and medicine he needed, fitting him for diapers for his incontinence, clearing him of his fleas, and building him a PVC cart so he can gain strength in his limbs. “He may never walk again but it won’t stop him from living a long, happy, healthy life with the right family.”

Cara got in contact with the Austin Pets Alive! P.A.S.S. (Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender) program to figure out how she could help without surrendering Frankie to a shelter. APA! gave her the tools she needed to care for him as she fostered him until adoption.

Frankie fit right in with Cara’s clan, particularly loving cuddling up to her foster sibling dogs.

Three weeks ago Cara wrote, “The perfect home for Frankie is out there, and what a lucky family they’ll be. We just have to find them,” and that she did. After 62 days, we’re thrilled to report he’s found the family to love him unconditionally, differently-abled legs and all.

When animals are paralyzed, they often are incontinent. Historically, incontinent cats were euthanized immediately at the shelter with the belief that no one would want them. We’ve proved time and time again that’s not true. “APA! has adopted out 13 incontinent kitties so far this year. Many of these cats went to first-time incontinent cat adopters”, says Allie Wassel, our Cat Matchmaker Team Lead. “Thanks to dedication from our fosters, marketing, and clinic team, we are continuing to educate the public about how manageable and adoptable these cats are!”

Your gift this Giving Tuesday helps save lives like Frankie’s. With all gifts doubled, up to $100k, until December 31st, you can have double the impact on pets like Frankie. At seven weeks old he was left alone, immobile, and diminishing day by day. But together with you, and advocates like Cara, these pets get the chance to find their people, who will love them unconditionally. Give the gift of hope this holiday season and donate today.
