For nail-art aficionados, a change in season presents an opportunity to experiment with an entirely new slew of fun nail designs and colors. Although there are certain standbys we always have waiting once fall arrives (shoutout to our favorite burgundy nail polishes), we reached out to some of our favorite nail aficionados to give us a heads-up on what we’ll be seeing in the coming months.

After prepping your nails and applying a base coat, you can begin mixing your colors in a bowl of water. The sky’s the limit on what colors you can mix here, but Boyce has some ideas.”There are so many cool colors you can choose from to get this look, but regardless, I would suggest mixing medium, light, and brighter colors to get a more noticeable look. For a Barbiecore-themed manicure, think pinks, whites, baby blues, etc.”
Once you’ve chosen your favorites, Boyce has a few tips for the tricky part. “Take your nail polish colors and drop one drop of each color into your bowl of water (into the center of each ring of color). Then take your toothpick and drag it around the polish to create an abstract design. Slowly dip one to two nails into the water/polish design (nail plate face down) and then immediately pull back out. When you dip your nails into the water polish design, take your toothpick and remove the rest of the polish away from the sides of your nail before pulling it up. Use your clean-up brush with nail polish remover to clean up any excess polish left on your skin.” Boyce also recommends waiting 20 to 40 minutes for them to fully dry, or you can try an LED nail lamp to help speed up drying time.

Whether you’re a “fall” person or not, I think we can all agree that any new season (fall or not) is an exciting time to mix things up when it comes to things like your wardrobe and beauty routine. And I’m not saying you have to get completely new clothes and swap out all your makeup products for new ones—the cool thing about seasonal transitions is that tiny changes can make an impact, too.
That might mean buying a few new items of clothing or accessories to mix in with your tried-and-true basics. Or trying out a new lipstick, eye shadow look, or even a new nail polish color. When September rolls around every year, I am in denial about saying goodbye to summer without fail. I’m the type of person who loves to get away. Before you shave, Marcus recommends exfoliating skin with a chemical exfoliant like glycolic acid. This will remove dead skin cells and ensure your razor is only shaving your hair, not getting clogged with dead skin.
After exfoliating, Garshick recommends cleansing the skin with a gentle cleanser. “[This will] wash away the dirt and reduce the chance of infection, and make sure skin and hairs are damp, which helps to soften the hairs and reduce the friction between the blade and the skin,” she explains. Use a lubricating shaving cream or gel as you shave, and always shave in the direction of hair growth.
It’s also important to maintain your razor blades. “Make sure to regularly clean your razor and avoid one that has already become dull,” says Garshick. Change out the blades often to ensure a close, smooth shave every time. After you’re done shaving, Garshick and Marcus recommend moisturizing your skin, which also helps reduce the chance of irritation and ingrown hairs.
