In: In 2023, Idriss forecasts that products formulated with multiple active ingredients will reign. It won’t just be about one ingredient anymore—these product will be packed with ingredients that target a specific skincare concern. Think products with brightening ingredients for discoloration or calming ingredients for redness. “A skincare routine starts with your main skin concern, and it isn’t always the same for everyone,” says Idriss. “Your skin is not a trend.”
When looking at skincare, Idriss also stresses that higher percentages of actives don’t always mean more efficacious products. In fact, using a lower percentage of an active consistently might give you better results in the long run. “The best results take time, and you putting in the work by consistently using your products will garner results,” Dr. Idriss says.
It should come as no shock to anyone reading this that I like to shop. As well as being a significant aspect of my job as a fashion editor, it’s also my favorite pastime, one that I’m lucky enough to partake in quite frequently living in NYC’s busiest shopping hub. That said, even I sometimes bore with the same fast-fashion shops, multibrand retailers, and department stores that have lined the streets of SoHo and beyond for years, wishing for some new spots to pop up and keep things interesting.
Luckily, it appears that I’m not the only one who’s fed up with the sartorial status quo in America’s fashion capital, with some of fashion’s coolest brands biting the bullet in the last few years and at last returning to brick-and-mortar life in downtown Manhattan. From minimalist Toteme, known for its blanket coats and elevated basics to Instagram-favorite Staud, a brand beloved for its mid-range handbags and bright-colored dresses, every in-the-know internet brand is taking root in NYC of late.
Scroll down for a sneak peek at some of the city’s coolest new stores, including Courrèges, Sandy Liang, Bode, and more. And stay tuned for more openings in the future.
I’m a big fan of winter. Huge. I’m also very into shopping, and since the colder months can impact my mood, I’m doing some premature damage control and indulging in some innocent retail therapy from one of my fave spots, Nordstrom. I won’t lie: My beauty situation is pretty expansive. After a decade of working in the industry, I have my skin and makeup essentials sorted. In other words, I know my nonnegotiable products, so at this point, I’m just in the market to play.
What can I say? I’m feeling festive. I love finding products that will make me (and others!) feel happier and more confident, so have at it! Keep scrolling for 31 wonderful beauty finds that also make really solid gifts.
Soria believes in ballin’ on a budget—something I absolutely can’t argue with. “As an advocate for accessible beauty who has used Milani Cosmetics since I was in high school, this was the perfect partnership and an absolute dream come true,” she shares. “I would constantly see my favorite YouTube beauty gurus creating these luxe looks with high-end products, and while I couldn’t afford MAC, Milani was there to bring the color and pigment without breaking the bank.”
Soria kept this in mind when working with Milani on this new collection: “For the Holiday Heist eye shadow palettes, I wanted everyone who came across them to be able to achieve an everyday look and a luxe look all in one palette. As a Latina, I need shades that will pop on my skin so Milani and I co-curated each shade to perfectly suit all skin tones. Additionally, I am known across my social platforms as everyone’s ‘money-saving bestie’ and my motto has always been, ‘Never spend more than you need to.’ Plus, I always finish my videos with the phrase, ‘What do we think?’ These soundbites inspired the Holiday Heist eye shadow palette names as the rose and purple-toned palette in the Luxe Jewel Kit is named What Do We Think? and the Allure Gem Kit eye shadow palette made up of emerald green and gold shades is named Money Saving Bestie.”
“The Holiday Heist collaboration with Milani holds a significant importance to me as a representation of all first-generation Latinas whose parents are immigrants that brought them here for a better future, and who put their hopes and dreams aside to make sure [their children] accomplished all of theirs. Growing up, I never saw someone with my brown skin on a beauty ad and I hope to help inspire the new generation of young girls.”
Shop the Holiday Heist Collection below and take a peak at a few more of Soria’s other favorite beauty products.
8. Strong lip or a strong eye? Red lip and kitten liner.
9. You’re having your nails done. What’s your go-to color? I usually do a different color on thumbs than rest of hands, and it might be a combo of red and pink.
10. What is your beauty philosophy in a sentence? Nature will make you the most beautiful inside out, so be in it as much as possible.
In the midst of everything that happened this year, one thing has become abundantly clear in the beauty world: Consumers care about sustainability. This year, waterless beauty reigned supreme, as waterless soap bars have seen a 7.1% year-over-year increase and waterless shampoo bars have seen a 5.3% increase YoY, according to Spins, a wellness-focused data company. For beauty consumers, this is a fairly large jump, and it shows that sustainable beauty truly has staying power.
“Combined, waterless shampoo and soap bars have seen nearly $1.5B YoY market growth this year,” said Dan Buckstaff, CMO of Spins. “The beauty industry understands that consumer demands have shifted to holistic and sustainable-minded practices such as creating a lower carbon footprint and ingesting healthier ingredient quality. Consumers are becoming more consciously aware of the ingredients in their everyday products, so retailers will need to adapt to changing demand and integrate eco-friendly, innovative waterless beauty products into the market.”
Below, find our absolute favorite waterless beauty products to try on for size. Our picks range from solid lotion to an ultra-concentrated shampoo paste.
I have a confession to make: I’m nosy AF. I’m sure it’s not the most shocking thing you’ve heard today—I like to think it comes with the territory when you’re a beauty editor. I always find myself Insta-stalking celebrity nail artists because of it (those designs!), and I just think it’s my job to stay on top of what’s currently trending in the beauty space. Today’s topic of interest? Popular nail colors, of course.
Don’t worry, though, this isn’t a wrap-up list of 2022’s best nail colors (although I wouldn’t be opposed to reading that either). I’m more interested in what hues celebrity nail artists think will make a big splash in 2023. After all, we all like to stay a little ahead of the game, right? If your curiosity has also gotten the best of you, keep scrolling. I DM’d four nail artists to find out what colors they’re feeling for the year, and I’m sharing all the details.
As the year ends and we reflect on the last 12 months, Google‘s annual Year in Search reveals what the most culturally significant moments, people and trends of 2022 were — according to what we typed into our search engines.
Based on the top trending queries (which the company defines as searches with a high spike in traffic over a sustained period within the U.S.), the Year in Search yields some fascinating results, some more surprising than others: On the fashion front, “how to style leather pants” was a trending styling tip, while many also inquired about the “preppy aesthetic“; Hailey Bieber’s nails, meanwhile, topped beauty searches, as did “passport makeup trend” and “What skincare products should not be refrigerated?”
There were also some funny findings, such as “Minnie Mouse” ranking among the top trending fictional outfits, “Adam Sandler” emerging as a top celebrity style influencer and “old money” being one of the most-searched aesthetics.
Read on for all the top trending fashion and beauty searches — in categories ranging from skin care to celebrity hair to sustainability — of 2022.

When combined, Chanel’s latest camelia nail products are a power couple for nourishing your nails.

If you’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the magic of a gel manicure — one that can last weeks while failing to chip through your hand’s toughest trials — you also know how precarious removal can be. To take off gel polish, nails must be soaked in acetone to loosen the gel, then scraped clean of it. But this process inevitably weakens nails, dries out cuticles and sometimes damages nail beds.
Both formulas rely on camellia extract, known for its antioxidant properties. (It was also Coco Chanel’s favorite flower, hence the brand’s suite of camellia-infused products.) The cuticle oil oozes out of the applicator and then melts into cuticles. It’s loaded with camellia seed oil to moisturize skin and nails as well as skin-strengthening ceramides and hydrating glycerin. The base coat can be used under polish or on its own for sheer, brightening coverage. Like the nail oil, the base coat features the same bouquet of all-star ingredients to build strength and resilience.
I started applying the nail oil twice daily before letting any polish touch my nails. After a few days of sticking to this regimen, I felt ready to apply the strengthening base coat, which I used consistently for a couple of weeks. Despite all the things my hands were exposed to — washing my hair, opening lots of boxes, doing dishes — the polish had impressive staying power, lasting for a full week without chipping. (I also love the chic, minimalist appearance it gives my nails.)

More importantly, I watched my nails grow back out after keeping them wrapped in the camellia base.
Admittedly, this isn’t the first time I’ve fudged my nails post-gel mani. Accordingly, I have a nail repair rolodex including the Essie Strengthener Treatment ($11), Elle + Mila First Aid Nail Strengthener ($10) and Olive & June’s Strengthener ($14). As much as I like the treatment from Chanel, there are more affordable options on the market that are similarly effective. But the Chanel ones feel fancy, and sometimes there’s nothing wrong with fancy.

First things first, wash those hands with soap and water. Next, apply a thin layer of Piggy Paint Basecoat + Topcoat ($5) to ensure a chip-resistant mani and let it air dry. Now, it’s time for the color! Paint on two to three coats of polish, but here’s where things get different… you’ll need a blow-dryer.
Blow-dry polished nails for one minute with a hair dryer set on a warm heat/low setting, as warm heat helps harden polish quickly. Lastly, apply a thin layer of Piggy Paint Basecoat + Topcoat ($5) and blow-dry the nails once more to finalize the look.
Now that you know how to give your little one a nontoxic mani, here are a few of the best nail polish shades from Piggy Paint. Keep scrolling!
If you feel like your DIY manicures never look as perfect as your professional ones, listen up. According to both Bamber and Tucker, not tidying up is the number one mistake they spot among clients who have attempted an at-home manicure. “It’s also one of the easiest to avoid, but believe it or not it still happens,” says Bamber. “Leaving specks of polish on the surrounding areas of your nails will make them look messy and if you’re using gel, will most likely make them lift.”
When applying polish to your nails, Bamber recommends doing a single swipe down the centre of your nail to start, followed by a swipe on either side (overlapping if needed) and avoiding getting too close to the edge of your nails. “It’s always better to leave a tiny gap than to get polish on your skin,” she says. “You could even use a fine brush to go around the cuticle and side walls if you struggle with this,” she adds. And if you do get polish on your skin? “Always make sure to clean your nails up with nail polish remover on a cotton ball as quickly as possible.”
In addition, Tucker advises that overexposing gel and polish to skin can cause skin reactions. “I learned this the hard way and now live with the irony of being a nail artist who’s allergic to gel polish,” she says. “It’s usually only a problem if product is left uncured on the skin as the compound changes when it cures in the lamp, so be super careful with your application and if you do get any on your skin, wipe it off immediately.”
Using this observation as a guide, it made me think a bit more deeply about my own favorite hues—especially when it comes to my nails. During the colder months, I tend to favor deeper polishes that fit a sweater-weather mood. To take it a step further, I thought it only appropriate to gain a bit of insight from Marks on some of the most common dark winter nail colors and what the emotions evoked by each could say about us.
Obviously, color theory and psychology are subjective subjects, but if you’re curious about why your go-to winter nail shades speak directly to your soul, keep scrolling below for what Marks had to share.
It seems like on TV shows, women crying over a broken nail is a played-out trope. But news flash, people! A broken nail really, really hurts. Not to mention, if you get your manicure professionally done, a broken nail can hurt your wallet as well. Here’s the good news: “There are many ways to fix a broken nail,” says celebrity nail artist and JINSoon founder Jin Soon Choi. Whether you’re using preventative measures like hydrating cuticle oils, or doubling up on nail strengthening treatments, chances are, you already have all the essentials needed to repair a broken nail within reach.
First thing first: it’s important to take proper care to prevent infection and treat the wound. It may sound dramatic, but a broken nail should be looked after similar to a cut on the skin. We reached out to Dr. Dana Stern, a dermatologist specializing in nail care, to discuss what exactly you should be doing to repair your broken nails. Ahead, Dr. Stern and Jin Soon share their best tips, tricks, and product recommendations for fixing a broken nail.

I’m always keeping an eye on what’s trending in the nail space because I’m a major design enthusiast. Every few weeks, I sit down with my nail tech Stephanie (who is the best), and we plan out what designs we’re vibing with the most for the season. We now have my nail looks on lock for the rest of 2022, but that doesn’t mean I’m not still curious what other folks will be sporting during the colder months. Regardless of the season, I’m always screenshotting looks for future inspo anyway.
To get the scoop, I tapped three celebrity nail artists. They dished on what designs and winter nail colors they foresee being a hit. Read on to find out what they had to share.
The holiday season calls for festive lipstick—it’s just a fact. Although red is a classic (sometimes considered cliche) shade, you’d be surprised to know that I often get the most compliments on my drugstore-priced shades rather than my designer ones. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good luxury formula, but I think the point I’m trying to make is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to have the gorgeous pout of your dreams. If you’re also into a classic shade like red, you’re going to want to keep reading. I’m letting you in on my best-kept lipstick secrets and even snatched a few favorites from other WWW beauty editors. Scroll down below and check out our tricks of the trade.
But don’t worry. This isn’t Invasion of the Body Snatchers—Kim and Khloé didn’t switch places for the night. Instead, Kim’s pointy manicure was actually made up of custom-painted press-on nails, which she was able to take off shortly after her appearance.
With a baby-pink base and angular white tip, these nails matched Kim’s entire Barbiecore vibe flawlessly. Kim wore head-to-toe hot-pink Balenciaga, complete with a mini croc bag and rose-toned jewelry. Her makeup was kept neutral, and her hair was out of her face. For this glam, the nails really stole the show.
It’s official—Nordstrom’s holiday deals are happening, and while you might be busy combing through the best fashion finds, we encourage you to take a beat and check out the beauty section too. Why? Well, there’s the fact that Nordstrom carries some of the best beauty products on the market, but what’s more relevant to us right now, is that many of them are seriously discounted for a limited time. We’re talking about some of our tried-and-true favorites, including Kiehl’s, Estée Lauder, Drybar, and more.
We know what you’re thinking: The Black Friday and Cyber Monday madness is on the way. But that doesn’t mean we can’t start shopping a little early, right? If anything, it’s proactive. After all, the gifting season is upon us, and whether we’re shopping for friends and family, or (ahem) ourselves, we’re kicking things off now. Keep scrolling to see the 19 best-discounted beauty products we predict will sell out first from Nordstrom’s holiday sale.
Collagen peptides can have several long-term beauty benefits: they can support skin hydration, elasticity, and overall appearance when used consistently. This collagen also contains amino acids, which are the building blocks of nails and hair. (For more intel on the science behind those claims, check out our guide to collagen supplements which thoroughly explains what we know given the current research.) But the powder doesn’t stop there, as it contains seven additional beauty-enhancing ingredients such as vitamin C, E, hyaluronic acid, biotin, L-glutamine, turmeric, and sulforaphane glucosinolate. (A few of those rank among the best vitamins and nutrients for both hair and nails individually.) Thanks to the robust nutritional profile of this innovative, multi-ingredient formula, you can consider a scoop of this power your one-step, inside-out beauty routine. *
What users say:
As one user noted, it helps her look more radiant naturally: “I’ve caught myself in the mirror recently, and now my eyes aren’t at all puffy and my lips and cheeks have a blush to them. My skin is firm yet supple to the touch, and my nails are stronger. I love the high dose of vitamins C and E, and biotin, too. I imagine I’m still getting some serious support from the vitamins.” And another user noted, she sees the difference in her nails and hair: “I put the powder in my ginger tea when it’s cold out, and otherwise. I definitely notice the difference in my hair and nails. My nails are stronger, and my hair seems thicker and shinier. Also, it is nice to have that extra nutrient boost. I think it has been good for my gut, too. Clearly a premium product. 100% worth it — now I’m hooked!” Who else recommends it? Bobbi Brown called it her “latest obsession.”*
Well, folks, it’s almost winter. Though it feels like we were only just plotting our summer manicure plans and perfecting our at-home French manicure skills, the time has come to start talking about the shades we’ll be breaking out ahead of the holiday season. It snuck up on us, but trust and believe we stay ready!
Unlike in years past, when deep shades like navy, black, and burgundy crept in to take the throne as soon as the leaves started to change, this winter’s trending nail colors are surprisingly bright. There are hues from all over the rainbow popping off, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Considering all that we’ve endured this year, we deserve extra-chipper manicures. From bright-red hues to minimalist glosses and all the shimmery white polishes you’ll need to get ready for blankets of snow, check out the 10 best winter nail colors to try now.
Now that I’ve had time to fully digest Taylor Swift’s latest album, Midnights,I’m taking the time to obsess over everything pertaining to the theme of the album, including Swift’s epic midnight manicure. Swift posted a shot of her dreamy, star-filled nails on her Instagram story and, of course, fans (including myself) immediately started looking for ways to do it themselves at home. It’s moody and mysterious yet still festive—the perfect winter mani if you ask me. I always like to go to the experts for any kind of hair, skin, or nail advice, so this time I enlisted the help of celebrity nail artist Brittney Boyce.
According to Boyce, it’s incredibly easy to DIY at home. You really only need two products, but if you’re like me and want to spice it up a little, keep reading for a few of Boyce’s tips and product suggestions to give it a go.
