  • ‘LIKE WHAT THEY TRYNA SAYYY’: Woman sits down at nail salon—then promptly gets handed the ‘towel of shame’

    Getting mani/pedis at the nail salon should be a pampering and relaxing form of self-care. As you sit in an armchair, the warm jets soak your feet while the technicians work to bring your vision to life. For this woman, it quickly turned into an unpleasant experience.

    What Happened At The Nail Salon?

    In a seven-second clip, Australia-based TikToker Christinah (@6hristinah) looks around the room, sitting in the pedicure spa chair at ProfessioNAIL. “When you wear shorts to the nail salon and they hand you this towel of shame,” she shares in the text overlay. Then, she turns the camera to unveil the long white towel in question draped on her lap to cover her legs. Afterward, she tilts the camera up to pan over the nail salon she is in. 

    Moreover, the content creator believed her outfit didn’t warrant a towel. “The way the pants were actually baggy and KNEE length too lmaooo,” she writes in the caption.

    A Deeper Dive Into The Nail Salon Incident

    During an interview with The Mary Sue, Christinah revealed that she was given a towel as soon as she sat down.

    “I came in wearing baggy shorts, and shortly after sitting down, I was handed a towel to place over my legs. I noticed that no one else in the salon was given a towel,” she shared via Instagram direct message.

    Subsequently, it stirred feelings of discomfort.

    “It felt uncomfortable and confusing, especially because I was the only customer asked to use one. It made me feel singled out,” she said.

    However, the content creator had to wear it throughout the entire appointment.

    “I was getting both a manicure and pedicure. They began both services while I was seated with the towel over my legs, and I remained covered until I was moved to another seat for the finishing touches,” she stated.

    Furthermore, Christinah experienced this before due to a different outfit.

    “Yes, this has happened previously when I attended wearing gym shorts. However, this time my shorts were longer and looser, so I was unsure why it was considered necessary,” she revealed.

    Overall, she wished the salon addressed this beforehand to everyone wearing incorrect clothing.

    “I understand that salons may have dress or hygiene considerations, but clear and consistent communication is important. If a towel is required for certain clothing, that policy should be applied equally to all customers. Being the only person singled out made the experience feel uncomfortable and unnecessary. I believe businesses should ensure that all clients feel respected and treated fairly,” she said.

    Viewers Enter The Chat

    Christinah’s video racked up over 872,000 views, where some proposed why the nail salon would do this.

    “[They just] making sure u feel comfortable,” one viewer suggested.

    “Big respect to them. cold, modesty because you are putting your leg up or opening your legs. comfy as well,” a second elaborated.

    Meanwhile, others shared that their nail techs have done the same thing to them during an appointment.

    “LOL i wore a skirt sooo short once and i didn’t even realise but i was happy they’d put that on my lap for modesty and so they wouldn’t get indecent views whilst doing my toes,” one commenter recalled.

    “Oh that’s what [it’s] for,” another stated.

    “Happened to me once,” a third remarked.

    As a result, this prompted Christinah to joke, “LIKE WHAT THEY TRYNA SAYYY.”

    So, Are There Secret Dress Codes?

    There is an unspoken rule about attire etiquette, especially for a pedicure. Tami’s Salon advises against dresses and skirts to prevent anyone from seeing up there. Instead, shorts or pants that easily and comfortably slide up the knees are the best. This allows the technician to easily access the entire foot.

    In addition to clothing, the type of shoes worn is essential. Slip-on sandals or flip flops are the best for pedicures. However, if this isn’t possible, PediCouture suggests opting for loose-fitting socks and a gel nail polish to prevent it from smudging or splitting.

    US nail brand Apres Nails famously has a gel nail polish shade named Blood Moon, which Tom used to create Selena’s manicure, slicking the polish onto coffin tips before applying his own brand of clear gel polish over the top.

    TikToker @lightslacquer provided a simple DIY hack for how to create this look, which involves dipping a sponge in water and then adding an oval-shaped dot of oxblood red nail polish to the centre of the sponge. She then circles around it with black polish before dabbing the sponge onto her nails and finishing with a slick of topcoat.

    Black creatives are thriving in the beauty industry right now. We’re becoming more aware of the influence and impact we have not just culturally, but economically too. Black consumers invest heavily in beauty, from hair and makeup to nails, which naturally creates more opportunities for growth and representation within the industry.

    For me, navigating this space has felt quite organic because I lead with authenticity. I’m intentional about sharing both my highs and my lows, which then helps people connect with the real journey behind the work. Collaboration is also a huge part of what I do. I love educating others about my craft and building genuine relationships with my audience and peers, because that’s where true growth and community happen.

    What are your current beauty obsessions?

    Charlotte Tilbury Collagen Superfusion Facial Oil is another favourite of mine. It leaves my face feeling soft and looking healthy thanks to the collagen.

    Julie Kandalec, New York City-based celebrity manicurist, educator, and Kiss Nails ambassador, says the trend doesn’t have to include the album colourways: Fans can embrace bold 3D accents, including “gems and feathers (à la stage headdresses), stars, and reflective finishes like metallic and chrome.”

    Obviously, the most devoted Taylor mega-fans are booking appointments to get TLOAS nails ahead of the album’s release date, but the experts we spoke to say the aesthetic is also affecting nail art trends in general. Sepia is a big trend for autumn; it’s the same tone done over and over, but make it lighter or darker, whether that’s making it jelly, less opaque.”

    And last, we can’t forget the Pantone colour of the year, which is perfect for cool weather. “One of the strongest directions for fall pedicures this year is the rise of cocoa-inspired shades,” says nail artist and educator Sofiia Mazur. “Mocha mousse perfectly reflects this trend.     With more of us tapping into our electromagnetic energy, aura nails have been big news in mani circles for some time. The design sees an ombre blend of two or more colours, but instead of being applied vertically or horizontally, it’s applied spherically to create an “aura” shape. And, heading toward Halloween “vampire aura nails” are trending with one user, @glossytipped picking up over 9 million views for a red and black design that wouldn’t look out of place on the Volturi coven.

    Nude manicures aren’t going anywhere if our current obsession with BB cream nails is anything to go by. Now Selena Gomez‘s latest manicure has made a case for ‘toasted’ nude nails.

    In an Instagram post on 7 September, her go-to nail artist Tom Bachik revealed Selena’s new set. Her short, squoval-shaped nails were painted a deep beige colour infused with iridescent peach pearls, courtesy of Essie’s Special Effect Line in Liquid Sunrise – seemingly an ode to the pictured sunrise on Selena Gomez’s Rare T-shirt.

    In the caption Tom wrote, “Trend Alert 💅🏼 Toasted Mani for Fall 🌅💖” – clearly signposting that ‘toasted’ shades were going to be huge for AW25. And it’s not hard to see why. Selena’s ‘toasted manicure’ is the perfect shade of golden hour light. It offers something different to summer’s milky pink nail: it hits the sweet spot between being neutral but also bang on trend for cosy season. It’s warm, understated and leans into the autumnal colour palette.

    How to do the toasted mani at home

    The appeal of the toasted mani lies in its simplicity – think neatly shaped cuticles, clean edges and polish with the merest hint of shimmer that takes the toasted nail seamlessly from office to bar.

    To get Selena Gomez’s toasted nail look, Tom wrote, “we always start with my favorite @tweezerman tools for a meticulous mani. For Sel’s mani we used @essie’s Special Effect line in ‘Liquid Sunrise’. I finished the look off with my favorite top coat, @shoptombachik Click Colors in ‘Super Clear’ (TPO-Free!).”

    So first, trim your nails by clipping straight across to create short tips and file the top edge of the nail into a straight line before rounding the edges.

    And when she posted her latest TikTok, in which she’s applying a couple of Rhode products to her lips and filming on a phone protected by her famous Lip Case (of course), we assumed the off-white manicure we saw flitting around was one of her go-to looks. But upon the closest possible inspection, we actually think it’s a deviation from the norm and quite possibly the next big trend in neutral nail looks.

    When we zoom in – yes, we take screenshots and basically do forensic investigations of celebrity beauty TikToks here at Allure – we realised we were looking at what we can best describe as a faded manicure. At first glance, it seemed like it may just be a sheer off-white that’s transparent enough to let her natural tips show through, but those natural tips look pretty darn perfect, leading us to believe it’s actually two shades of cream: a sheer one as the base and a more opaque one on the tips, with a not-so-sharp line of demarcation that gives the overall look a faded effect.

    But wait! There’s more! When we zoomed in extra close, we could see what’s either some spots on her mirror, or a few little dots on her nails. Alas, Hailey Bieber has yet to give followers a closer, higher-res view.

    Naturally, we’ve reached out in hopes of more details and a clearer look. But in the meantime, we’re not going to wait to see a faded French manicure on other hands before we call it: This is going to be one of the biggest trends for the rest of 2025.

    This combination of a cool pink, earthy tones, and beige is subtle but still eye-catching. It’s not too gaudy, but also not as minimalist as the other manicure trends we’ve seen this summer. In contrast to the transparent fruit-water nails, the polish is opaque; the colour is also stronger than princess nails, which Victoria Beckham, among others, recently wore.

The short length is not only in line with the current trend, but also elegant.

    First apply a base coat to even out any unevenness on the nail plate. Next, brush on two coats of the polish – make sure to let each coat harden well so that the polish shines more later. For the ultimate glossy look, add a topcoat – then your rose-mocha nails are finished.
