MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Shelby Hotel at Myrtle Beach is just a five-hour scenic drive from metro Atlanta. This beauty boutique-style hotel ended up being the perfect getaway for this family of four. Greeted by these adorable Art Deco Miami vibes, we felt right on the beach. It’s the absolute perfect distance from a list of attractions, including the boardwalk area with a number of sites for all the family to enjoy.

Our room was welcoming and provided plenty of storage for the family. Traveling with two boys (5 and 8), we needed proper storage for toys and Beyblades. Our view from the room was stunning, with a quaint little sitting area with unobstructed views of the lazy river, pool, and, of course, the sunset on the beach. My oldest enjoyed some early morning gaming right on the deck.

It’s nestled right on the beach, just steps away from the sand, providing an easy opportunity to play in the water, catch a nice tan, and collect unique seashells. Of course, we took a bag of seashells home from our visit.

After enjoying the beach, the hotel offers the ultimate relaxation attraction: the lazy river beachside pool. The views of the beach continue all around the pool area, with plush day beds and poolside recliners. Don’t worry about packing pool towels; the hotel provides them.

The onsite restaurant, Palm and Pebble, offers bountiful breakfast and dinner options. Their signature Cinnamon Rolls were unavailable, so make sure you get there early. Honestly, this was the best breakfast we had on the trip. The menu hosts all the fan favorites of breakfast items. The French toast was flavorful and done to perfection, while my oldest enjoyed the hearty breakfast sandwiches with turkey sausage. There was no slight on the meal, leaving us stuffed and satisfied. The hotel even has special programming like music trivia on select dates to engage and entertain guests.

The fun did not end there. We spent hours at Ripley’s Aquarium, touching jellyfish, walking under shark tanks, and enjoying plenty of other interactive activities for everyone. Not to mention, we had a blast playing Cray Golf at Ripley’s Crazy Golf, Mirror Maze, and Illusions Lab. Unbeknownst to me, the illusion lab was a cool combination of science, fun, and interactive exhibits.

All of these attractions were minutes away from the hotel and in a prime area for other activities, such as restaurants, bars, and arcades.

We ended the day at the SkyView Wheel, 187 feet of stunning views of Myrtle Beach and the endless ocean. For a family-friendly trip full of fun, relaxation, and good food, visiting Myrtle Beach at The Shelby is the place to go.

Kingston Resorts is transforming their property into an entire Christmas Village from November 29th through December 24th, 2025. This includes ton of fun crafts, games, movies, Santa visits, and the amazing Humbug Suite decked out in Grinch decor.

While you can book the Humbug Suite any day during this time, the Christmas Village events take place every Saturday from 11 am – 7 pm. Here’s what you can expect:

Even if you don’t end up going on a Saturday, the resort still has plenty to do and you are literally right on the beach. They do keep their pools heated and there are beautiful spaces to enjoy right there at the resort.

The Humbug Grinch Suite Experience

I did not know what to expect when my daughters and I opened the door to the Humbug Suite. I knew it would be decorated with all Grinch-related things but I had no idea about the extent to which it would be transformed from an ordinary hotel room to a whimsical adventure.

You will not be disappointed when you swing open that door. The room doesn’t even mirror a regular hotel room. The details the staff at Kingston Resort put into this room is phenomenal. There’s a tilting Christmas tree that lights up with presents underneath. There are lollipop Christmas decorations hanging in front of the windows. There are several red and white cupcakes placed alongside hot chocolate packets for your enjoyment. There are Grinch playing cards, the book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, Christmas pillows, stockings hung about with care, a Grinch shower curtain, and red and green stickers all over the walls.

The bedroom is the best though. There are Grinch sheets on the bed with Grinch pillowcases and the fluffiest, Grinchiest green blankets you could imagine. There’s a Grinch doll and Grinch candles and tinsel with ornaments draped across the headboards. There are two queen beds in the suite plus a pullout couch. My daughters and I thought this was just the coolest thing ever and had so much fun here!

The Humbug Suite is available November 28 through January 3. You will get a welcome treat, a $10 credit to the Christmas Village Bar, and a special take-home holiday gift. Book directly through the Christmas at Kingston Resorts website.

When you book the Humbug Suite, you will have access to all of the resort amenities, free breakfast, and free happy hour, which includes two drinks per person and snacks.

Where to Eat at Kingston Resorts: Black Drum Brewing

Black Drum Brewing is the newest addition to Kingston Resorts. It’s a beautiful restaurant with an incredibly delicious menu featuring Southern cuisine and local craft brews.

We got their huge soft pretzel because I can never refuse such an offering. It was delicious. Dinner was a kids meal of mac & cheese and fruit, Carolina Gold pulled chicken with mac & cheese and fruit, a side of mashed potatoes, and a pepperoni pizza. There are four different BBQ sauces to choose from and you need to choose the blackberry one.

Everything was very good but the chicken and pizza were our favorites. Both were flavorful and the servings were huge. There were three of us and we took back leftovers to our hotel room. The place has cozy but welcoming atmosphere and while the doors weren’t open to the pool area, when they are, you’ll get a beautiful view. There’s also cornhole outside to play while you wait.

Beachfront Location

Obviously the big draw of Kingston Resorts is its oceanfront location. You cannot get any closer to the beach than if you were laying in the sand. There are multiple beach access points so you don’t need to lug all your beach gear out of the parking lot and down a half mile boardwalk. It’s so close!

We truly enjoyed our evening beach walk right on the water to the pier. It had been storming all day and the clouds finally parted and we got to enjoy a beautiful night walking along the water and taking fun photos. I loved showing my girls the cool shots you can take under the pier and then just walking the few steps back to the hotel and up to our room. It was a terrific way to end the evening.

Honest Mom Review

Getting to see the reaction of my kids when we opened the door to the Humbug Suite was priceless. The amount of thought and energy that went into creating this space was amazing and I was so appreciative. My daughters and I had so much fun inside the suite but also at the resort during happy hour, enjoying the delicious breakfast, playing at the pool, walking along the beach.

No detail overlooked in the Humbug Suite

While the Christmas events were not happening when we stayed, I can imagine combining those with the Humbug Suite experience would just be the coolest getaway. This would be a fantastic gift for your family as an experience gift because you and your family would be taking home beautiful and fun memories together – and those last longer than any gifts.

Nancy Mace scraps South Carolina campaign stop after nobody showed up to see the ‘proud transphobe’

Rep. Nancy Mace’s campaign for South Carolina governor suffered an embarrassing stumble last week when she canceled a planned speech in Myrtle Beach after just eight people arrived, undercutting her claim that she is leading the Republican field.

Mace, who announced her gubernatorial bid on August 4 with anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and declared herself a “proud transphobe,” had advertised that more than 100 people would attend a Moms for Liberty event at Forward Church on Thursday. But at the scheduled start time, rows of empty chairs greeted her. Only eight attendees were present, not including reporters and security, according to My Horry News.

Instead of taking the stage, Mace and her staff slipped into a back room. A press aide later told reporters that the speech was off. The Charleston Republican answered media questions outside the sanctuary before meeting briefly with those who did show up.

The flop came just weeks after Mace launched her run on the parade ground of The Citadel, where she became the first woman to graduate from the military college’s Corps of Cadets. At that event, she promised to “ban pronouns in the classroom” and cut off public funding to schools and colleges she accused of promoting “gender ideology,” The Advocate reported. She also leaned into Trump-style messaging, pledging to punish prosecutors and sheriffs she deems too lenient and to defund colleges “that can’t define what a woman is.”

Days before she announced her candidacy, Mace called herself a “proud transphobe” on X, formerly Twitter.

Mace insists she remains the frontrunner. Her campaign released polling last week showing her at 25 percent support, ahead of Attorney General Alan Wilson and U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, though more than a third of Republican voters were undecided. She said she texted the results to President Donald Trump, who reposted them on his social media platform Truth Social, according to My Horry News.

“The bellwether that Horry County brings is, ‘Where are Trump voters? Where are they leaning?” Mace told reporters after the canceled speech. “Trump voters are two-thirds of the state, and we’re winning Trump voters by double digits, almost 20 points,” she said, according to My Horry News.

But the optics of an empty room added to a string of awkward campaign moments. Earlier this month, Mace berated a reporter at a town hall after being fact-checked on her opposition to the Inflation Reduction Act. She also faced backlash after boasting that she likes to unwind by watching Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids.

Mace, who has branded herself as “Trump in heels,” is one of five Republicans vying to succeed Gov. Henry McMaster, who is barred by term limits from seeking reelection.

Pastor Announces To Church His Wife Died By Suicide – But Her Family Wants FULL Investigation After Discovery Of Body – Perez Hilton

At first this might seem like a man sharing the worst news he could have gotten with his community. But every new detail makes this story so much sketchier…

John-Paul Miller is a pastor at the Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He shocked his flock last Sunday, April 28 by announcing the death of his estranged second wife, Mica Miller. He said, apparently pretty matter-of-factly:

“I got a call late last night, my wife has passed away. It was self-induced and it was up in North Carolina.”

He then gave everyone details about her memorial service and told them not to talk about the announcement anymore within the church. Weird. Also weird? He was exceptionally quick to label his ex’s shockingly sudden death a suicide. He even added that “she wasn’t well mentally”:

“Y’all pray for me and my kids and everybody. You all knew she wasn’t well mentally and she needed medicine that was hard to get to her. I’m sure there will be more details to come, but keep her family in your prayers.”

Unlike all his other sermons, this one isn’t available to watch on the Solid Rock YouTube page anymore — but it’s the internet, and someone got a copy anyway. See for yourself (below):

He also spoke to local outlet WPDE, telling them the same — just really talking surprisingly candidly about her suicide, and her past struggles with it:

“She had struggled with suicide before. Each time we would help her through it and take her to the doctor, and we got through it and everything was fine. She even gave a few testimonies here at church that we have on video. She battled suicide but God took care of her and got her through it.”

He also told the outlet:

“She was probably the greatest wife anyone could ask for. She was incredibly affirming. We spent every night together for hours just talking and talking and talking.”

Awful news… except… Right now the public only has his word this was a suicide. Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Major Damien McLean would only tell the local ABC affiliate that there was an investigation into the death of the 30-year-old, saying:

“Officers are in the process of gathering information from people in South and North Carolina as part of their investigation into how Miller died.”

No official cause of death has been released.

Local NC outlet The Robesonian was the first to report any actual details of Mica’s April 27 death, saying she was found with a gunshot wound to the head at Lumber River State Park in Lumberton (about an hour and a half north of Myrtle Beach). But they’ve since taken down their article! Everyone else was citing them for those deets. Why did they take that down? Did the cops tell them it’s too soon?

Meanwhile here you have this Pastor just telling anyone who will listen how his wife definitely died by suicide. If police weren’t sure yet, wouldn’t you think a spouse would want to wait and be 100% sure, too?? Why would a husband be so forthcoming about such a personal matter anyway? Seems a little odd, right?

Odder still? In all his talk about spending every night together talking with Mica, he didn’t mention she’d filed for divorce from him just weeks earlier. Yeah. Clearly their marriage was not as lovey-dovey as he makes out. And she has zero photos of him left on her Facebook, apparently having deleted everything before March. And yet he was the one who wrote her obituary. An obituary with lines about what a good wife she was to him:

“She truly served Jesus and her husband with all of her heart. She would praise her husband after every church service telling him he was the best preacher in the world (even if it wasn’t true). She also told him he was the funniest preacher in the world (even though that wasn’t true either).”

Man, this guy really made her obit all about himself. Ugh. This all just seems so sus to us! No wonder her loved ones are asking for a full investigation! Her friend Kenn Young told WPDE:

“This has to be at least looked into deeply. There’s got to be some accountability here.”

He made a point of saying “it’s not just as simple as mental health issues.” So what the heck is he talking about??

Well, Mica herself started referring to “abuse” in posts made shortly before her death. In fact, there are ONLY posts from shortly before her death. As mentioned, she seems to have wiped everything before mid-March! But around that time she posted a video in which she talks about “going through abuse and hurt.” She also talks about “leaving a dangerous situation”:

See that hashtag? #AbuseAwareness? Something was going on! She also posted just three weeks before her death:

“When terrible terrible TERRIBLE things happen to you… (yall know what I’m talking about 😉 RPF: resting peace face #stillblessed #Godisgood”

She wrote that she was “still blessed”? And at peace? Hmm.

And in her own post announcing Mica’s death, her sister made sure to mention she “did not deserve the abuse she endured.” Whoa.

That leads us to what we’ve seen on social media that we can’t verify. We’ve seen several women claiming to be former members of the Solid Rock church and friends of Mica personally who are accusing her ex — the pastor — of grooming, of stalking, of physical and mental abuse. We can’t verify any of it, obviously, but it’s shocking stuff. And if we were the cops investigating the case, we definitely would be reaching out to talk to these people. We just hope the truth is found — and Mica gets all the justice she deserves.

Chinese balloon’s downing creates spectacle over tourism hub

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — The downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon just off South Carolina’s coast created a spectacle over one of the state’s tourism hubs and drew crowds reacting with a mixture of bewildered gazing, distress and cheers.

The balloon was struck by a missile from an F-22 fighter just off Myrtle Beach on Saturday, fascinating sky-watchers across a populous area known as the Grand Strand for its miles of beaches that draw retirees and vacationers. Crowds gathered in neighborhoods, hotel parking lots and beaches to watch the balloon hover, with some cheering just after it went down.

The festive mood belied the seriousness of the situation, with law enforcement around the county of 366,000 warning people not to touch any debris and to instead call dispatchers.

“Members of the US Military are coordinating to collect debris; however, fragments may make it to the coastline,” the Horry County Police Department said in a statement.

Ashlyn Preaux, 33, went out to get her mail in Forestbrook, South Carolina, just inland of Myrtle Beach when she saw her neighbors gathered outside. Curious, she went to see what they were looking at. It was easy to spot the balloon in the cloudless blue sky, and what appeared to be fighter jets circling overhead. After the strike, she could see the balloon start to come apart and fall from the sky.

“I did not anticipate waking up to be in a ‘Top Gun’ movie today,” she said.

The balloon hovered directly above the Hardy family as they checked into their oceanfront hotel in Myrtle Beach. The family from Anderson joined several employees in the parking lot taking videos of the scene unfolding above before going up to their room ahead of the missile strike.

Logan Hardy, 12, said the moment of impact generated a “boom” that shook the building. His room’s balcony gave the middle-schooler a clear view of the debris dropping.

“It looked like stars falling down,” he said, adding: “I will never forget this day.”

Some watchers rushed to nearby beaches as the balloon approached the ocean. Travis Huffstetler, who captured photos of the balloon, said the packed Garden City Beach almost looked like summertime on the chilly winter day.

When the balloon began crossing the water, Mark Doss, 54, drove a golf cart three blocks down from his home to Garden City Beach. There, Doss said he and his two teenage children spent 90 minutes watching the strike and waiting in vain for debris to wash ashore.

The sheer size of the white orb awed Doss, who said the approaching fighter jet looked like a model airplane. Doss recalled a “white puff of smoke” after the missile struck the balloon.

“That one jet made a beeline straight to it — wham!” Doss said.

Life continued uninterrupted for many others into the evening. Doss described the spectacle from a biker bar. There, Saturday night thrill seekers gathered like normal as if international tensions had not played out hours earlier 60,000 feet (18,300 meters) above them. A cover band performed while people shot pool and huddled around patio heaters. Along the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, nightlife staff went unbothered by the day’s events. Others waiting in line outside a club had completely missed the news.

But the severity of the growing diplomatic turmoil was not lost on Doss. He lamented the stress the events placed on his two teenage children, whose exposure to such sights had previously only come through the big screen.

State Sen. Greg Hembree of Horry, who represents the area in the South Carolina General Assembly, watched the strike from his neighbor’s backyard.

The sight was both impressive and “a little bit scary” for Hembree, who said Americans typically expect such images to come from other countries.

“It was stunning,” Hembree said. “You don’t ever think you’re going to see a live engagement with an adversary in sort of a military context.”

The ensuing debris spread across roughly seven miles (11 kilometers) and landed in 47 feet (14 meters) of water, shallower than officials had expected.

The next day, Brady Deal set out to go fishing, but ended up capturing video of what might have been a portion of the shot-down balloon being brought to shore in South Carolina. A Pentagon spokesperson asked about the footage declined to comment Sunday.

Deal said he saw Navy personnel arriving at the Johnny Causey Boat Landing in North Myrtle Beach with what appeared to be a white, deflated balloon across the bows of two different boats. A third boat appeared to have a crane and boxes on it.

“I was just in the right place at the right time and I thought it was pretty cool,” said Deal, a North Myrtle Beach construction worker.

On Saturday, Deal posted a live video on social media when the balloon was shot down.

On Sunday, “when I went over there and I saw the Navy boats, I was like, ‘Well, I guess they’re going to bring them back in today.’ So we went back over there and we hit it at the right time.”

As a federal operation to recover the debris continued, life in the beach town largely returned to normal.

About a dozen people strolled along Surfside Beach on the rainy, foggy morning. One couple spotted a ship in the distance through binoculars. A nearby bakery brands the area as “The Family Beach.” Locals described the town as typically quiet, save for the hullabaloo the previous day’s hullabaloo.

For Sandy and Bob Grubb, the balloon situation was not in the travel itinerary. The retired couple from Lebanon, Pennsylvania has been vacationing there for over 30 years. The two said they had been joking about the prospect of washed-up debris as they collected sea shells on their Sunday morning walk.

“It’s a quite peaceful place — gave us some excitement,” Sandy Grubb said, laughing. “Not the kind of excitement you need.”

Sex offender gets life for killing teen during 2009 vacation

A man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday after confessing to the 2009 killing of a 17-year-old girl who disappeared while on a beach vacation in South Carolina.

Raymond Moody led police to Brittanee Drexel’s body in May after advances in technology helped investigators determine that the teen’s cellphone was in Moody’s vehicle the night she disappeared while walking alone along the Myrtle Beach waterfront.

Drexel, a high school student from upstate New York, had been celebrating spring break with friends.

Moody, 62, confessed to her killing, saying he’d offered marijuana to Drexel and that she voluntarily went to his campsite 35 miles (56 kilometers) away in Georgetown County. After his girlfriend left, Moody said he tried to have sex with Drexel, who refused.

Moody said he then strangled Drexel because he realized he would go back to prison as a convicted sex offender — he had previously been convicted of raping an 8-year-old girl in California.

“I was a monster. I was a monster then and I was a monster when I took Brittanee Drexel’s life,” Moody said in a Georgetown County courthouse after pleading guilty Wednesday to murder, kidnapping and rape for the teen’s killing.

Drexel was always texting and her boyfriend, who stayed home near Rochester, New York, began looking for her within 15 minutes of her disappearance in April 2009, prosecutor Scott Hixon said.

That search went on for more than a decade. Drexel’s family repeatedly came to Myrtle Beach to keep attention on the missing teen. There were candlelight vigils and police sifted through hundreds of false tips as the case captured the attention of the true-crime community.

Among those tips were rumored links to other missing women and wild allegations of stash houses in which sexual abuse victims’ bodies were being fed to alligators.

“Some were excruciatingly sickening in detail on what some person claimed they did. Law enforcement had to spend a significant amount of time disproving what I would call crackpot, really breathtaking claims,” Hixon said.

Moody’s girlfriend came to police in 2011 and said she was abused. She knew Moody served 20 years of a 40-year prison sentence for raping a child in California and said she no longer believed Moody’s story that friends picked up Drexel while she was gone.

Investigators searched where Moody was staying and questioned him, but couldn’t gather enough evidence to charge them.

Then, in 2019, investigators decided to restart their investigation and take a new look at the evidence. Notably, advances in technology allowed police to pinpoint within a minute when Drexel’s cellphone went from moving at a walking pace to fast enough to be in a vehicle.

Initially, investigators had tried to sort through dozens of vehicles seen on a surveillance camera around the time the teen disappeared. More than 10 years later, now knowing the exact time Drexel got into a vehicle, they were able to pinpoint it to an SUV owned by Moody.

When authorities returned to question Moody, this time he confessed, telling investigators he had buried her body in a wooded area in Georgetown County, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) down the coast from where she disappeared.

Hixon said investigators could only go by his version of events and will never know if Drexel got into Moody’s SUV on her own or was forced inside. Hixon also said that because the teen’s body wasn’t found for 13 years, they can’t know if she was strangled or killed some other way or whether Moody abused her in other ways.

Drexel’s family joined prosecutors in asking for the life sentence. They said she was a loving teen, who played soccer, liked fashion and was like a mother for her younger siblings.

Dawn Drexel wore her daughter’s ashes in a necklace around her neck and told Moody he was a serial child predator who should be especially ashamed since he had three daughters.

Drexel’s mother said she was proud her daughter fought back, scratching Moody on his head, neck and face before she died.

“I hope you suffer in prison for the rest of your useless life,” Dawn Drexel said.
