Shah Rukh Khan will not be at Mannat to greet fans because..., he apologises for...: 'Will meet...'

Shah Rukh Khan fans who gathered outside Mannat to catch a glimpse of the superstar on his 60th birthday were left a little disappointed this year. The actor took to X (formerly Twitter) to apologise, revealing that he couldn’t step out to greet them due to safety concerns raised by authorities because of the massive crowd outside his Bandra home.

In his heartfelt note, SRK wrote, “Have been advised by authorities that I will not be able to step out and greet all you lovely people who have been waiting for me. My deepest apologies to all of you… it is for everyone’s safety due to crowd control issues.” He added, “I will miss seeing you more than you will. Was looking forward to sharing love. Love u all.”

Every year, Shah Rukh greets his fans from Mannat’s balcony, waving and blowing kisses to thank them for their love. Despite police blocking nearby roads, videos showed fans finding creative ways to reach closer to Mannat — some even taking the seaside route across the rocky Bandstand stretch. Many had travelled from different states and countries just to celebrate the actor’s milestone birthday.

Meanwhile, on his 60th birthday, the makers of his upcoming action film King released its first look, featuring SRK in high-octane action scenes that left fans thrilled online.

  • Australia out of World Cup as India completes miracle run chase

Australia has been knocked out of the Women’s Cricket World Cup by India, who pulled off the greatest run chase in tournament history to win their semifinal.

India chased down 339 with nine balls to spare to win by five wickets, beating the record set by Australia against India in this World Cup only a few weeks ago.

India’s hero was Jemimah Rodrigues, whose unbeaten 127 steered her side to what seemed an improbable win.

Rodrigues was supported by her captain Harmanpreet Kaur (89), while late cameos from Deepti Sharma (24) and Richa Ghosh (26) helped get India over the line.

Australia will forever rue two dropped catches late in the innings which offered Rodrigues crucial reprieves.

Alyssa Healy unfathomably put down the first when Rodrigues, on 82 at the time, top-edged a sweep shot gently to the centre of the wicket. Healy got two gloves to the ball, but somehow failed to hang on.

Rodrigues was then dropped again on 106 when a miscued drive burst through the hands of Tahlia McGrath at mid-off.

Her brilliant batting deserved some luck though, and Australia’s vaunted bowling attack was no match for her array of cuts and drives.

It was a tough day for bowlers on both sides, with Phoebe Litchfield setting the tone for Australia earlier in the match with a stellar innings of her own.

Litchfield combined with veteran Ellyse Perry for a mammoth 155-run partnership as Australia reached 338, bowled out with a ball remaining.

The 22-year-old Litchfield took just 77 balls to bring up her maiden World Cup ton, doing so by lofting Radha Yadav over mid-off for a boundary.

She was eventually dismissed for 119, bowled by Armanjot Kaur while attempting to ramp the medium pacer over the head of wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh.

From there, Australia’s innings faltered a touch, with Beth Mooney (24), Annabel Sutherland (3) and Perry (63) all falling in quick succession.

Vice-captain Tahlia McGrath came to the middle and injected some urgency into the Australian innings, striking 10 runs from her first four deliveries, but her innings came to an end when she was run out for 12 after being called through for an ill-advised single by Ash Gardner.

Gardner — who scored two centuries during the pool phase —  dominated the back end of the Australian innings, dispatching four massive sixes before she too was run out for a bludgeoning 63 from 45 deliveries as Australia went on to lose its last three wickets for just two runs.

India will now play South Africa in Sunday’s World Cup final.

Look back at how the action unfolded in our live blog.

    Key Events

Australia vs India World Cup semifinal live

    Goodnight!

Well, not the result that Australia wanted.

But that was an excellent game of cricket won by a remarkable innings.

Jemimah Rodrigues goes down as the architect of the greatest chase in the history of women’s ODI’s.

From me and Dean, thank you for joining us and goodnight.

    A major blow for Australia

For Australia, this is a crushing defeat.

Even though they faltered towards the middle of their innings, 338 seemed like a more than defendable total.

But, in the end, it wasn’t.

And as excellent as both Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues were, Australia was sloppy in the field and with the ball.

Not something you can say about this Australian side too often.

    India wins by five wickets

    (Getty Images)

    What a moment.

Amanjot backs away and slashes Sophie Molineux through the off-side and in doing so completes the highest successful chase in the history of women’s ODIs.

The greatest moment in the history of the Indian women’s team, it’s a deserved, outstanding victory.

Amanjot Kaur struck the winning runs, but this chase was made possible by the most composed, remarkable innings you are ever likely to see.

Jemimah Rodrigues finishes on 127* from 134 deliveries.

She knew when to attack, when to hold her nerve, when to probe and when to poke. She rode her luck at times, but that was a defining knock if ever there was one.

A tearful Rodrigues is speaking at the post-match presentation.

“It was really hard the last few months, but this just feels like a dream, and it hasn’t sunk in yet,” Rodrigues says.

And it sounds like she knows just how momentous this result could be for women’s cricket in India.

“Today was not about my 50 or my 100, today was about making India win,” Rodrigues says.

“We’ve always lost in crunch situations and I just wanted to be there in the end to take us through.”

49th over: India needs eight runs to win

It is two shots away for India.

    And now it’s just one!

Molineux serves up a full toss and Amanjot smashes it through the off-side for a boundary.

48th over: Sutherland to bowl out

    23 runs from 18 deliveries.

    That’s the equation for India.

It’s there for the taking for the tournament co-hosts.

Sutherland begins with a full one that Amanjot works to the on-side for a couple.

Wide! Not what Australia needs – but it’s a wonderful take by Healy down the leg side. That saved four.

Four! Jemimah Rodrigues picks the slower ball and has an age to ramp it over Healy for four!

    It’s down to a run a ball!

And now it’s less than a run a ball! Sutherland sends another wide down the leg side.

Four! Rodrigues cuts to the off-side and it pierces the gap between point and cover.

And she works a single from the over’s penultimate ball.

    Amanjot returns the favour.

47th over: Molineux into the attack

Shot! A poor, poor ball from Molineux. It’s short and wide with the field up on the offside. Jemimah Rodrigues cuts it through the circle and that’s four.

She proceeds to work a single to the on-side.

    Armanjot takes guard.

Good ball from Molineux. Armanjot pushes it to mid off and that’s a dot.

The next one is straighter and Armanjot works it behind square for a single.

    Another dot.

    And another.

    That’s over.

    SUTHERLAND STRIKES!

    Silence in Nava Mumbai.

Pace off and short from Sutherland.

Richa Ghosh is backing away and doing all she can to lift one over the point fielder on the circle.

    But she can’t quite.

It’s a good catch from Kim Garth.

    Game on…

    46th over: Sutherland has another

This is India’s game to lose now.

Jemimah Rodrigues works a single and Richa Ghosh does the same.

It’s almost a run a ball required here now for India. Australia needs something.

    Two more singles.

And another, deep into the off-side.

45th over: Gardner from around the wicket once more

The first ball of the over is a priceless, priceless dot for Australia.

The second is stopped on the long on boundary and it’s a single.

The third is a massive, massive six! That one was right in the arc and Ghosh dispatches Gardner over midwicket for a maximum.

Gardner overcorrects and is called for a wide.

Another boundary! Another sweep in front of square! India passes 300.

This over has really broken things open for India.

They now need just 34 from the last five overs.

44th over: Sutherland to bowl it

    55 runs.

    42 balls.

    That’s the equation for India.

    Annabel Sutherland charges in.

And her first ball is poor. Wide and full – it would’ve been called had Rodrigues not gotten something on it. No run.

Drop! Wow! Jemimah Rodrigues tries to go over mid-off but doesn’t get enough on it. Tahlia McGrath is backing up and settling underneath it but the ball flies through her fingers!

Four! Nothing is going right for the Aussies! This one is a thick outside edge, flying past Healy and to the boundary.

A single to end a painful over for the Australians.

    43rd over: Gardner goes again

Four! Jemimah Rodrigues pulls out the reverse sweep and it’s a lovely shot – over the infield and to the rope.

The batters cross for a single.

Gardner has opted to go over the wicket to the right-handed Ghosh.

She fires a couple out wide, flirting with a wide call. But she gets away with two dots.

The third is too wide. Another run to the total for India.

Gardner straightens up for the final two balls of the over, from which the Indian batters prise a couple singles.

42nd over continued: Schutt has a couple more

    Wide! Down the leg side.

Schutt will have to bowl another.

Six! And Australia pays for that extra delivery. Richa Ghosh strides down the pitch and hammers a massive six down the ground.

    Jemimah Rodrigues tons up!

Rodrigues works the ball down the ground for a single and that is a wonderful century from the woman from Mumbai.

But the job’s not done yet and she knows it.

    Hardly a celebration from Jemimah.

    42nd over: Schutt goes again

And she’s bowling to Jemimah Rodrigues, who’s on 96.

The first ball of the over is shovelled deep into the legside for a couple.

She opens the face of the bat and runs the ball down backward of point for a single.

    She moves to 99.

Richa Ghosh works a single to get off the mark.

    DEEPTI SHARMA IS RUN OUT!

That is a massive moment in this game.

Deepti Sharma, who had been blazing the Australian attack to all parts, is run out.

Jemima Rodrigues works one to backward square leg, she sets off, but Sharma is on her heels.

The throw into Healy is good and the bails are off before Sharma is even in the frame.

A very poor run and an unnecessary wicket for India.

41st over: Gardner back into the attack

Woah, what a massive over this is.

If Gardner can keep things relatively quiet, Australia will feel a whole lot better about things moving forward.

India needs 82 runs from the final ten.

Deepti is sweeping hard for a single and Jemimah Rodrigues is working a run of her own.

Four! Sharma is low and sweeping and that’s four!

That’s even better from Deepti! But just a single through the covers.

40th over – Megan Schutt back into the attack

So Schutt will likely bowl out here. Her radar must be locked in from ball one.

Singles from the first two balls, the second involving a possible run out and a possible overthrow. None of the above, in the end.

Schutt is mixing up her pace smartly already, and is being backed up in the field. McGrath dives to save a boundary.

A couple of wides down the leg side don’t help though.

Beamer! That’s not going to help! The no ball is pulled away for a run, AND now India gets a free hit. Not good from Megan Schutt.

Deepti is caught on the long-off boundary from the free hit and takes a single. Could have been worse for Australia.

Chaotic over. Six from it. Ten to go.

39th over – King to bowl again

FOUR RUNS! Deepti charges at King and whacks her back over her head for four.

Molineux saves four at fine leg with an incredible diving stop. It’s one, but it could have been a boundary.

Eight from that over, a boundary and four singles.

India needs 90 from 66 balls.

38th over – Sutherland to bowl her seventh

FOUR RUNS! Deepti goes over midwicket with power, and that might break the shackles. Looks like she’s decided her eye is in.

Deepti tickles the next one around the corner for one.

A couple more singles make it seven from the over. Everyone is just taking a bit of a deep breath before we hit the climax of this semifinal.

Four dead, several feared trapped under billboard in freak accident during Mumbai rainstorm

MUMBAI (Reuters) – At least four people are dead, 61 injured and more than 40 feared trapped after a massive billboard fell during a rainstorm in India’s financial capital of Mumbai on Monday, local officials said.

The rainstorm was accompanied by gusty winds, causing the billboard, located next to a busy road in the eastern suburb of Ghatkopar to collapse on some houses and a petrol pump.

A rescue operation for the people remaining trapped under the billboard is ongoing. Fire services, police, disaster response officials and other authorities are all involved in the rescue efforts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the civic body that runs Mumbai, said on X.

News channels and posts on social media showed the towering billboard billowing in the wind for a while before it gave way and crashed to the ground.

The local weather department had predicted that moderate spells of rain, accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40-50 kilometers per hour were likely to occur in parts of Mumbai district on Monday.

There were temporary flight disruptions at the Mumbai airport, with 15 flight diversions and operations suspended for a little over an hour, ANI news agency, in which Reuters has a minority stake, reported.

Mumbai, like several Indian cities is prone to severe flooding and rain-related accidents during the monsoon season, which usually lasts from June until September every year.

RIL is a Fortune Global 500 company and “the largest private sector corporation in India.”

Under Ambani’s leadership, Reliance Industries has grown from a textile and oil and energy company into a sprawling conglomerate that includes retail shops, a mobile and broadband carrier, digital platforms, groceries, electronics and more.

India’s travel landscape is changing as the country emerges as a powerhouse in the tourism sector.

Their willingness to spend big while traveling is going, but research shows that most Indians are traveling domestically — not overseas.

Indian travelers took 1.7 billion leisure trips in 2022 but most never left the country, and only about 1% traveled abroad, according to Booking.com and McKinsey.

Indian travelers are projected to be taking 5 billion leisure trips by 2030, and 99% of those will be within the country as well, said the report published October.

The world’s most populous country is set to be the fourth-largest global travel spenders by 2030, largely due to a growing middle-income population that will see household earnings grow by $35,000 annually by that time.

In addition, the population is young, with the median age at 27.6, “more than ten years younger than that of most major economies,” McKinsey said on its website. “What’s more, consumption of goods and services, including leisure and recreation, is forecast to double by 2030.”

Spending on travel and tourism is predicted to hit $410 billion — a surge of more than 170% from $150 billion in 2019, the report showed.

Here are the top 10 spots for Indians traveling within their own country, according to Booking.com and McKinsey.

    1. New Delhi
    2. Bengaluru
    3. Mumbai
    4. Chennai
    5. Pune
    6. Hyderabad
    7. Gurugram
    8. Jaipur
    9. Kochi
    10. Kolkata

According to the “How India travels 2023” report, about 2,000 Indians and 42,000 global tourists between 18 and 54 years booked leisure travel trips in 2022 and plan to do the same this year.

New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai retained the top four spots since the previous study in 2015 — Kochi is the only new city on the list.

“India’s travel ecosystem is maturing and there are multiple government schemes that are making the country more connected and ensuring it develops into a tourist hub,” Kanika Kalra, managing partner at McKinsey Mumbai, told CNBC.

    Smaller cities are gaining traction

In addition to cosmopolitan cities like New Delhi and Mumbai, those like Jodhpur, Dharamshala, Bodhgaya, Bilaspur, Kodagu and Raipur are also catching the attention of international hotel chains keen to carve out market share in India’s booming travel industry.

“Branded hotels are currently focusing on Tier 2 cities for expansion owing to the increasing business opportunities and travelers’ increasing willingness to pay for standard services,” Deepak Rao, director of revenue management at Hyatt Hotels in India and Southwest Asia, said in the report.

French hotel chain Novotel opened its doors to travelers in Jodhpur in May, while Radisson Hotel Group announced in June it will start welcoming visitors to Raipur in 2025.

About half (52%) the hotels in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities will be branded hotels by the end of 2023 — up from 27% in 2015, the report showed.

Growing interest in traveling to smaller Indian cities is largely attributed to the transportation infrastructure boost that is underway, said Mckinsey’s Kalra.

At its annual budget announcement in February, India’s finance ministry said it plans to pump up capital expenditures by 33% to 10 trillion rupees ($120.96 billion), as the country is poised to become the second largest economy by 2075.

Indian airlines have ordered over 1,000 new aircraft, which will bring the total number of planes to between 1,500 to 1,700 by 2030, the report showed.

“So we will see this landscape change quite dramatically and we will see a new wave of travelers to smaller towns,” Kalra said.

    Top international destinations

Of the 1% of Indian travelers going overseas, here are the top 10 places they are visiting.

    1. Dubai
    2. Bangkok
    3. Singapore
    4. London
    5. Paris
    6. Ho Chi Minh City
    7. Ubud
    8. Hanoi
    9. Phuket
    10. Kathmandu

Rhode’s Purna Khatau Shares Her Travel Guide to Mumbai

Rhode, the ready-to-wear brand known for creating vacation-ready pieces (not to be confused with Hailey Bieber’s skincare line), has quickly become an industry favorite for its bold, bright colors and statement-making prints. It makes sense, then, that co-founder Purna Khatau frequently draws inspiration from her hometown of Mumbai, a city that prides itself on its architecture, Indian craft, and coastal views of the Arabian Sea. Her design ethos centers on faraway travels and finding beauty in everyday minutiae. With that in mind, we asked her how to see the city like a well-dressed local.

    TRAVEL

o Rickshaw — There are so many options for getting around Mumbai. For the adventurous, a rickshaw ride is a fun way to see the city.

o Drive — Black and yellow cabs are very easy to hail. Alternatively, you can arrange for a driver to take you around, which makes seeing a lot in one day more achievable.

o Walk — Certain parts of Mumbai are also great to walk through. The Colaba district and Fort area are lovely to stroll; buy a pair of classic kolhapuri sandals from street vendors that sell them in every color under the sun. While there, have lunch at The Nut Cracker and then browse Anokhi, a store that features very classic block-printed clothing and home goods. This is the place to get your gifts for friends and family at home.

    STAY

    mumbai travel guide

o The Taj Mahal Palace — Built in 1903, The Taj Mahal Palace is a Mumbai landmark, with beautiful views of the Gateway of India. Insider tip: ask to stay in the old wing. The pool is absolutely incredible and one of my favorite places to relax, unplug, and listen to the sounds of the birds and the buzzing city around you.

o The Oberoi — The Oberoi has stunning views of the ocean and Queen’s Necklace, a.k.a. the beautiful lights along the Marine Drive shoreline. This is the perfect stay for someone who is looking for calm and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

o Abode — Abode is an independent hotel located in the heart of Colaba. It’s beautiful and eclectic, with colonial and Art Deco pieces that have been sourced directly from Mumbai’s flea markets. The details at Abode truly capture the heart and soul of Mumbai’s history.

    EAT

    mumbai travel guide

o Swati Snacks — Not to be missed, this is Indian street food at its best. Be sure to try the panki, which is a crepe-like dish that is prepared by being pressed between two banana leaves and then grilled on the stove.

o Kala Ghoda Cafe — This is a great place to grab a coffee or quick bite. The gluten-free chocolate waffles and ginger and carrot cake are delicious. Keep your eyes open, as the walls usually feature art by local artists.

o Trishna — This is the best seafood restaurant in town, and never disappoints. The crab is exceptional and a must-order.

    SHOP

    mumbai travel guide

o Obataimu — One of my dear friend’s shops, Obataimu is a Japanese-inspired retailer that sells consciously curated contemporary pieces in innovative textiles. What’s even more amazing is that they make things in-house, so you can see tailors working on garments as you shop.

  • Apple is set to open its first retail store in Mumbai as it bets big on India | CNN Business

Apple is set to open its first retail store in Mumbai as it bets big on India | CNN Business

    Hong Kong
    CNN
     —

Apple is finally getting ready to open its first physical store in the country as it bets on India as a market and manufacturing base.

The company teased the opening of its retail outlet in a brief statement Wednesday, saying it was preparing to greet customers in the financial and commercial hub of Mumbai. Its previous plan to open a store in the country in 2021 was derailed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The company released a photograph of its new boarded-up storefront, located at Jio World Drive Mall, a property owned by Reliance Industries, the conglomerate of Indian tycoon Mukesh Ambani.

    “Hello Mumbai,” the statement said.

A notice outside the store said it would be “arriving soon.” Apple

    (AAPL)
did not immediately respond to a request for further details, such as the opening date.

The launch would come more than 20 years since the California-based giant first entered the Indian market through third-party resellers.

For years, Apple and other foreign retailers were restricted from setting up shop in the country unless they sourced at least 30% of raw materials locally, forcing them to rely on local partners. That changed in 2019, when the Indian government relaxed some investment rules.

In 2020, the company launched an online store in India, allowing customers to buy its products and also, for the first time, customize certain devices.

CEO Tim Cook has previously pointed to the importance of starting its own retail network in the country, saying, “I don’t want somebody else to run the brand for us.”

More recently, the company has been ramping up manufacturing in India.

It increased its exports from the country significantly last year, with the number of iPhones made and shipped from India rising 65% in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to Counterpoint Research.

Apple first began making iPhones there in 2017. But in recent months, it has expanded production after suffering severe supply chain snags in mainland China, which accounts for the bulk of its smartphone manufacturing.

Two of Apple’s top contract manufacturers, Foxconn and Wistron, were the fastest-growing manufacturers in India during the last quarter of 2022, according to Counterpoint.

Last month, Foxconn CEO Young Liu spent a week in the country and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The southern state of Karnataka said Foxconn had announced a major deal during Liu’s visit and that 300 acres of land had been allocated for a facility.

According to a report from Bloomberg citing unnamed sources, the Taiwanese company plans to invest about $700 million on a new plant in the state capital of Bengaluru to make iPhone parts.

An Indian government minister said in January that Apple was hoping to boost its output in India to a quarter of its overall total from somewhere between 5% and 7%. Apple did not respond to a request for comment at the time.

As a market for iPhones, however, India still has a long way to go.

Apple leads sales of premium smartphones in India, with the iPhone 13 ranking as the country’s overall bestseller in the segment last year, according to Counterpoint.

But the company lags behind other brands in the overall market, which is led by Xiaomi and Samsung

    (SSNLF)
    , the research firm said.

Apple accounted for just 1% of India’s smartphone market in 2019, and may notch more than 5% this year, Prachir Singh, a Counterpoint senior analyst, added.

He said its market share could grow as it opens its own stores in the country, particularly as Mumbai is the second largest Indian market for Apple after Delhi.

“Apple will be able to control the end-to-end user experience, and this will further take its brand image one level up,” Singh said.

Adani rout deepens despite soothing words from India’s government and billionaires

Shares of most Adani Group companies fell further on Monday, continuing to drop as a feud between the conglomerate and short-seller firm Hindenburg deepened.

Adani Enterprises lost 4%, and Adani Transmission fell 10% in Mumbai’s morning session. Adani Green Energy, Adani Power and Adani Total Gas fell 5% each. Adani Port and Special Economic Zone bucked the trend and traded 2% higher, but they remained volatile.

Bernstein warned there will be more pain ahead in its latest “India Strategy” report.

“There will be more volatility in India this year; hence the market is prone to a correction,” analyst Venugopal Garre wrote in a Monday note. “The best way to pick up such transactions is to look for arbitrages in implied growth.”

Goldman Sachs echoed the likes of Nomura and HSBC in saying that the latest developments are unlikely to result in a spillover effect for the wider Indian stock market.

“We believe credit concerns are likely to be idiosyncratic in nature and are less likely to have broader contagion or systemic issues for the India offshore credit market,” Goldman Sachs analysts Kenneth Ho and Chakki Ting said in a Friday note.

They noted uncertainties surrounding Adani, saying its outstanding U.S. dollar bonds may hurt investor sentiment, but those concerns will be “unlikely to have a broader contagion impact.”

Stock picks and investing trends from CNBC Pro:

Adani Group’s total gross debt reached 2.2 trillion Indian rupees ($26.8 billion) as of end-March in 2022, according to the latest statement it’s released in response to Hindenburg accusations of stock manipulation and fraud.

The group is likely to scrap plans to raise roughly $500 million in overseas bond sales and will “explore other financing options” instead, India’s Economic Times reported.

Meanwhile, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index showed founder and Chairman Gautam Adani’s net worth fell further on Friday. His personal wealth has more than halved so far this year, down by 51.1%, or $61.6 billion.

    ‘Resilient and stable’

The Security and Exchange Board of India over the weekend aimed to defend Indian markets – saying the country’s two main indexes have demonstrated “ongoing stability” and are “continuing to function in a transparent, fair and efficient manner.” The Sensex is the benchmark index of the BSE — formerly the Bombay Stock Exchange — and the Nifty 50 is the flagship index of the National Stock Exchange of India.

“SEBI is committed to ensuring market integrity and to ensuring that the markets continue to have the appropriate structural strength to function in an uninterrupted, transparent and efficient manner as has been the case so far,” it said in a statement.

Gautam Adani, chairman of Adani Group, speaks during the Forbes CEO Summit in Singapore, on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022.

Without mentioning Adani companies by name, the regulator noted “unusual price movements in the stocks of a business conglomerate,” adding that it is monitoring those moves.

The regulator mentioned the Additional Surveillance Measure (ASM) framework – which compiles a list of companies about which the regulator advises investors to be “extra cautious while dealing in these securities,” according to the National Stock Exchange of India.

Several Adani Group-affiliated companies are included on the ASM framework’s long-term and short-term list, according to a notice on the NSE’s website updated Monday.

Adani Power is included on the long-term list, while Adani Enterprises, Adani Green Energy, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Adani Transmission and Adani Total Gas are on the short-term list.

SEBI’s message of stability followed that of India’s central bank on Friday. The Reserve Bank of India said that “the banking sector remains resilient and stable,” citing its own assessment of the situation. It added that it will continue to monitor the stability of the industry.

“Various parameters relating to capital adequacy, asset quality, liquidity, provision coverage and profitability are healthy,” the RBI said in a Friday statement. “Banks are also in compliance with the Large Exposure Framework (LEF) guidelines issued by the RBI.”

    Indian billionaires weigh in

Anand Mahindra, the chairman of Mahindra Group, defended India’s economy despite the whirlwind of recent media coverage surrounding Adani Group.

“I’ve lived long enough to see us face earthquakes, droughts, recessions, wars, terror attacks,” he said in a tweet on Saturday, without mentioning Adani Group by name.

“All I will say is: never, ever bet against India,” he said.

Fellow billionaire Uday Kotak, CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank and India’s wealthiest banker, also tweeted over the weekend: “I do not see systemic risk to Indian financial system from recent events.”

He noted large Indian companies “rely more on global sources for debt and equity finance,” adding that it leads to challenges and vulnerabilities.

“Time to further strengthen Indian underwriting and capacity building,” he said.

  • India’s wedding season is here, but for many it’s no longer the bigger, the better

India’s wedding season is here, but for many it’s no longer the bigger, the better

Wedding ceremonies are held differently even within India with some couples choosing big religious ceremonies, while others lean toward a more intimate celebration.

    Rvimages | E+ | Getty Images

Indian weddings are big business. But some of them may not be quite so big this year as they once would have been.

The celebrations are famously known for being week-long extravagant affairs filled with elaborate religious ceremonies, glamorous outfits, singing and dancing, and of course lots of jewelry.

Many couples in India get married from November to February, which is viewed as an auspicious period in Indian culture.

According to Nikkei Asia, trade body Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimated that 3.2 million weddings would happen during November to December of last year.

Celebrations in that month would have generated 3.75 trillion rupees ($46 billion) for businesses in the wedding industry, a steep increase from 2.5 trillion rupees in 2019, Nikkei Asia reported based on data from CAIT.

It’s therefore no surprise that lavish Indian weddings often draw up to 1,000 guests — and that comes with a hefty price tag.

However, the mindsets of millennials in India have changed, and many are starting to believe that less is more.

Couples are moving away from “big, fat” Indian weddings toward intimate celebrations with a slimmer guest list, said Tina Tharwani, co-founder of Mumbai-based wedding planning company Shaadi Squad.

They have chosen to give guests a more personalized experience at the event, rather than making it a competition with their peers on who can throw a biggest wedding, Tharwani told CNBC.

Smita Gupta, founder of Delhi-based wedding planner Wedlock Events, agreed.

“The success of weddings obviously depends on the guests, but it’s not the number of guests nowadays,” Gupta said. “They are more worried [about] the guest experience.”

“If you call 600 guests to your wedding, it’s just extra money that you’re paying,” said 29-year old Manika Singh. She is getting married in December 2023 and plans to invite only up to 250 guests for the main celebration, which will be held at the Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand.

Renting the venue for two days will set the couple back by 1,500,000 rupees ($18,400), or about 600,000 rupees ($7,400) more than what it was before the pandemic and higher inflation.

    Feeding people isn’t cheap

But cutting her guest list came with a caveat.

To accommodate her parents’ desire for a big wedding, Singh will also have a lunch reception for 300 guests at the family home a day before.

“You won’t even know half of the people, they’re just acquaintances of your parents,” she said, adding that this is a common practice that couples often succumb to to pacify their families.

Despite couples trimming the size of their weddings, they’re spending just as much. Even with a shorter guest list, spending big on the venue, food and decorations remains the norm, Gupta said.

Singh agreed, adding that inflation has driven up the cost of food, and rice prices “have gone through the roof.”

Rising inflation has caused many soon-to-wed couples to spend a large amount of their budget on food.

Jupiterimages | The Image Bank | Getty Images

Although India’s retail inflation dipped from 5.88% in November to 5.72% in December, cereal and milk prices continue to rise, according to Reuters.

Singh anticipates food being the costliest item at both the lunch reception and wedding celebration in December.

That affirmed her decision to scale down the number of guests at her wedding but spend more on her outfit and jewelry instead, which is costing her 700,000 rupees ($8,600)

“More people means less luxury at your wedding,” Singh said, “We can splurge on that instead of feeding people.”

    Pricey gold? No problem

Gold prices hit eight-month highs on Tuesday, with spot gold trading at $1,877 an ounce.

But that isn’t stopping soon-to-be married couples from buying gold for their big day, Ramesh Kalyanaraman, executive director at Kalyan Jewellers said.

High costs haven’t necessarily deterred people from making big purchases, but they may wait a couple of weeks to see if prices drop, Kalyanaraman said. “It is not a drop” in sales, he said, but “a delay in their purchases.”

According to the World Gold Council, India’s gold industry contributed 1.3% to the country’s GDP and is dominated by small and medium enterprises.

Bhawna Jain / Eyeem | Eyeem | Getty Images

And that was no different during Covid.

Kalyanaraman said the ticket size for wedding jewelry was much higher during the pandemic, because people were unable to spend money on entertainment or rent big marriage halls due to government restrictions.

“Gold jewelry is not a fashion accessory; it is actually a part of every custom and ritual,” he said.

Kalyanaraman said that in some Indian cities, parents start buying gold for their daughters from birth and will continue adding to the collection as they grow older. Many of those pieces are then worn on their wedding day.

Singh said she has a different stance and won’t be decked out in expensive jewelry. She will purchase only one set of new jewelry, and use another from her engagement ceremony. For the rest of it, she is “just going to wear fake jewelry.”

South Korean YouTuber posts video while having ‘lunch with 2 gentlemen’ after Mumbai incident

South Korean YouTuber Hyojeong Park, who was sexually harassed on a street in Mumbai’s Khar while she was livestreaming, has on Friday tweeted a photo thanking the two Indian men who helped her take action regarding the incident.

The Korean tourist thanked the two men, Aditya and Atharva, in her tweet for pushing her to post the video and also saving her from further harassment.

Hyojeong tweeted a photo of them having lunch at a Mumbai restaurant with the caption that read, “Lunch with two Indian gentlemen who help me to post the video and save me on the street. Aditya and Atharva.”

The accused, Mobeen Chand Mohd Shaikh, 19, and Mohd Naqib Sadarialam Ansari, 20, were nabbed from Patel Nagar in suburban Bandra and they have been sent to one-day police custody. This happened after Indians on social media asked the Mumbai Police to take action against the men who harassed the tourist. An FIR was lodged under section 354 IPC at the Khar Police station.

The Korean tourist in the video said, “My name is Hyojeong Park. I am from South Korea. I was assaulted in Mumbai, India. This is the video.”

Park’s video that surfaced on Wednesday showed the woman being sexually harassed by the accused. The young man could be seen coming very close to her and trying to pull her by holding her hand even when she protested.

As the woman began to walk away from the spot, the man again appeared on a motorbike with a friend, offering her a lift while she told him in broken English that she did not want it.

Park runs the online handle titled ‘Mhyochi’, according to which she loves playing video games and connecting with others through Twitch.

‘This city has so much energy’: Here’s what JSW Group’s Sajjan Jindal has to say about Mumbai

JSW Group Chairman and Managing Director Sajjan Jindal owes a lot of his success and his company’s high points to India’s maximum city – Mumbai. Jindal believes the city has so much energy and power and that it is not only about money and/or politics.

“I give a lot of credit to Mumbai for whatever our family has done and wherever I have, you know, how I have succeeded or whatever I’ve achieved in life. I give a lot of credit to Mumbai because this city has so much energy [and] so much power. It’s [not only] about politics it’s not about money,” Jindal said in an interview with India Today Group’s Rajdeep Sardesai.

He added, “Mumbai has given us so much it’s amazing.” While Jindal acknowledged the role Mumbai played for his successes and JSW Group’s growth, he also talked about how his hometown Hisar is not like a typical village or town in Haryana.

Jindal commented, “Hisar is also a very nice town. You know when I was growing up it was a very modern town. Though it sounds Haryanvi, it’s not like one of those Haryana villages or towns, it was a very modern town with a university. We had swimming pools, we had tennis courts, we had squash courts. We grew up in a modernish town.”

Jindal, also serving as the chairman of the World Steel Association, mentioned that he went to Ramaiah Institute of Technology in Bangalore for his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering as his mother Savitri Devi Jindal wanted for the children to be well educated.

Interestingly, Savitri Devi Jindal is also the Chairman Emeritus of the Company since 2011 after serving her tenure as the board member from May 2005 to October 2011. She also features on the 126th spot on the Bloomberg Billionaires’ Index with a net worth of $12.3 billion and is on the 98th spot on the Forbes Billionaires Index with a net worth of $15.8 billion as of October 17.

  • US visa application in India: Over 1 lakh appointments confirmed for H1-B, L-1 visas

US visa application in India: Over 1 lakh appointments confirmed for H1-B, L-1 visas

The US Embassy in India has released over 1,00,000 appointments for H&L visas for workers and their families bringing in a relief for those who have been waiting to see their families since the pandemic started. The L-1 and the H-1B visas are the two most popular non-immigrant work visas issued by the US.

On Friday the US Embassy in India tweeted: “In response to high demand for employment-based visas, the US Mission to India recently released over 100,000 appointments for H&L workers and their families. Thousands of applicants have already booked their appointments and the wait time for both interview waivers and first-time appointments has been cut in half throughout Mission India. This bulk appointment opening reflects our ongoing commitment to H&L workers.”

In another tweet added: “In fact, in the first nine months of 2022, the U.S. Mission to India had already processed over 160,000 H&L visas and we will continue to prioritise H&L workers for visa appointments as resources allow.”

Also read: Australia relaxes visa rules to address labour shortage, increases skilled workers quota

L-1A and L-1B visas are available for temporary intracompany transferees who work in managerial positions at multinational companies. Whereas H1-B Visa is a multiple entry non-immigrant visa that allows foreign workers employed by US companies to work in the country.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on his recent visit to the US had highlighted the issue of visa delays with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Blinken at that time had said the process will be addressed.

On 30 September, US Embassy Counselor Don Heflin said that there are people in the US on H and L visas who haven’t been able to come home and see their families since the pandemic started. He said: “…we sympathise with them a lot. We are going to, sometime in the next few weeks, open 100,000 appointments in the year 2023 for this category of visas. And for those of you who are interested in this and want a slot, just check our website every two or three days, every two or 3 hours during October.”

Earlier this month, the US Embassy in India opened the appointments for all categories of visas adding that the wait time would be high owing to high demand for the visas, reduced staffing, and pandemic-related disruptions in operations since March 2020.

But despite this relief to H&L visa holders, the wait time for first-time applicants for B1 (business) and B2 (visitor) visas are still 884 days in Delhi, 767 days in Kolkata, and 872 in Mumbai. This would mean that interested visitors can expect to get an appointment in January 2025 or even later.

Bus catches fire in India, killing 11 and injuring 24

NEW DELHI — A bus caught fire after hitting a truck on a highway in western India early Saturday, killing at least 11 passengers, an official said.

Another 24 people were injured and taken to a hospital in Nashik, a city in Maharashtra state, said Eknath Shinde, the top state elected official.

Most passengers were sleeping when the bus caught fire around 5 a.m. and the vehicle was completely burned, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Shinde said the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Nashik is nearly 200 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra.

Hundreds of thousands of people are killed or injured annually on India’s roads. Most accidents are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
