The son of Asia’s richest man gets married in the year’s most extravagant wedding

MUMBAI – The youngest son of Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest man, married his longtime girlfriend early Saturday in what many dubbed the wedding of the year, attended by global celebrities, business tycoons and politicians, highlighting the billionaire’s staggering wealth and rising clout.

The wedding rituals, including exchanging garlands by the couple and walking around the sacred fire, began Friday and were completed past midnight.

The celebrations of Anant Ambani marrying Radhika Merchant took place at the Ambani-owned Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai and the family home. The marriage culminated months of wedding events that featured performances by pop stars including Rihanna and Justin Bieber.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a reception organized by the Ambanis on Saturday evening.

The Ambanis hosted a “blessing ceremony’’ for friends and family members to meet the couple and wish them a happy married life.

India Today television news channel reported that the newlyweds touched Modi’s feet as a show of respect and sought his blessings.

The four-day wedding celebrations began Friday with the traditional Hindu wedding ceremony and will be followed by a grand reception to run through the weekend. The guest list includes former British Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Boris Johnson; John Kerry, the former U.S. special envoy for climate, Saudi Aramco CEO Amin H. Nasser; and Adele, Lana Del Rey, Drake and David Beckham, according to local media. The Ambani family did not confirm the guest list.

Television news channels showed the arrivals of celebrities like Kim Kardashian, who was dressed in red, and professional wrestler and Hollywood actor John Cena.

Kardashian sisters Kim and Khloé took a ride in a motorized rickshaw through bustling Mumbai streets Friday before joining the wedding ceremonies, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

International guests wore traditional clothes by major Indian fashion designers. They put on embroidered sherwanis — long-sleeved outer coats worn by men in South Asia. Cena came in a sky-blue sherwani and white pants. Nick Jonas wore a pink sherwani and white pants.

Bollywood icons Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor attended the wedding and danced to popular Hindi movie songs. Indian cricketers, including icons Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, were among the invitees.

Police imposed traffic diversions around the wedding venue from Friday to Monday to handle the influx of guests who flew to Mumbai, where heavy monsoon rains have caused flooding and flight disruptions for the past week.

The extravaganza and the display of opulence that comes with the wedding have led many to raise questions about rising inequality in India, where the gap between rich and poor is growing. The event has also sparked anger among some Mumbai residents, who say they are struggling with snarled traffic.

“It affects our earnings. I don’t care much about the wedding,” said Vikram, a taxi driver who uses only one name.

The father of the groom, Mukesh Ambani, is the world’s ninth-richest man, with a net worth of $116 billion, according to Forbes. He is the richest person in Asia. His Reliance Industries is a conglomerate reporting over $100 billion in annual revenue, with interests that include petrochemicals, oil and gas, telecoms and retail.

The Ambani family owns, among other assets, a 27-story family compound in Mumbai worth $1 billion. The building contains three helipads, a 160-car garage and a private movie theater.

The groom, 29-year-old Anant, oversees the conglomerate’s renewable and green energy expansion. He also runs a 3,000-acre (about 1,200-hectare) animal rescue center in Gujarat state’s Jamnagar, the family’s hometown.

The bride, Radhika Merchant, also 29, is the daughter of pharmaceutical tycoon Viren Merchant and is the marketing director for his company, Encore Healthcare, according to Vogue.

Ambani’s critics say his company has relied on political connections during Congress Party-led governments in the 1970s and ’80s, and under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule after 2014.

The Ambani family’s pre-wedding celebrations have been lavish and star-studded from the start.

In March, they threw a three-day prenuptial bash for Anant that had 1,200 guests, including former world leaders, tech tycoons and Bollywood megastars, and performances by Rihanna, Akon and Diljit Dosanjh, a Punjabi singer who shot to international fame when he performed at Coachella. The event was also attended by tech billionaires Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates.

It was the start of lavish, months-long pre-wedding celebrations that grabbed headlines and set off a social media frenzy.

In May, the family took guests on a three-day cruise from Italy to France, which included Katy Perry singing her hit song “Firework” and a performance by Pitbull, according to media reports.

The family also organized a mass wedding for more than 50 underprivileged couples on July 2 as part of the celebrations.

Last week, Justin Bieber performed for hundreds of guests at a pre-wedding concert that included performances by Bollywood stars Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh and Salman Khan.

Ambani also made headlines in 2018, when Beyoncé performed at pre-wedding festivities for his daughter. Former U.S. Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry were among those who rubbed shoulders with Indian celebrities and Bollywood stars in the western Indian city of Udaipur.

Disney and Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Edge Closer to Massive India TV Deal, Say Reports

Disney and Reliance Industries have moved closer to a merger of their massive Indian TV and streaming businesses. A combination of the two – which include rival streaming platforms, India’s leading pay-TV platform and over 100 linear TV channels – has the potential to substantially re-shape the Indian media and entertainment scene.

Quoting unnamed sources close to the deal, the Reuters news agency reported on Thursday that the two companies had appointed lawyers to handle potential anti-trust issues that would likely arise. The agency named both law firms retained.

Reuters also said that a non-binding merger term sheet had been signed by the parties at the end of December.

Neither Reliance Industries nor Disney have offered any comment to repeated enquiries from Variety.

Disney became one of the largest players in the Indian entertainment field when it bought 21st Century Fox. The former Murdoch family-led operation included the Star pay-TV platform and the wildly popular Hotstar streaming startup. Disney subsequently merged Hotstar into its own Disney+ platform to create a mass-market streamer with a low price point.

Disney’s dominance has been challenged by the Ambani-controlled Viacom18 group and its suite of Jio-branded operations that stretch from mobile phones, to broadband internet and, latterly, streaming service JioCinema.

In what may have been a huge miscalculation in 2022, Disney failed to win the streaming rights for the 2023-2027 seasons of the Indian Premier League cricket tournament, which it had shown on Hotstar. Paying roughly $3 billion each, Jio took the streaming rights, while Disney secured only the pay-TV rights. And when Jio streamed the IPL free of charge in 2023 it was able to undercut Star and cause Disney+ Hotstar to lose tens of millions of users.

With Reliance Industries’ hugely deep pockets, Jio has already been able to profit from one aspect of Hollywood’s ongoing consolidation and the Wall Street imposed drive for financial rectitude. Early last year Jio became the new streaming home in India for HBO, Max Original and Warner Bros content, effectively precluding the launch of HBO Max in India in the near to medium future. The HBO win was also a loss for Disney as the WBD content had previously been carried on Star TV.

Were a deal to be completed, Reliance-Viacom18-JioCInema would likely own a majority stake in the merged entity.

But, the same cricket rights which may have brought Disney to the negotiating table may be a sticking point in the merger process. In order to appease anti-monopoly regulators, some of the IPL rights, which would otherwise all be under one roof, may have to be ceded to rival operators.

Another (unknowable) factor is India’s other potential media and entertainment mega-merger. Sony, which operates channels and a smaller streamer in the country, is currently attempting to merge with Indian TV and streaming conglomerate Zee Entertainment Enterprises. That deal has been more than two years in the offing and could still fail to be completed. Were the Sony-Zee deal completed to create another behemoth, Jio and Disney may have less trouble getting a green light from regulators, ministries and courts.

Now, we have come across an inside video from the celebration that shows Shah Rukh warmly greeting and hugging Kailash Kher as he performed at the Ambanis’ Ganpati celebration.

Shah Rukh looked dapper in a maroon kurta paired with loose black pajamas, and a saffron scarf around his neck. As the Jawan singer stood on stage, Kailash sang the song ‘Saiyaan’. In his caption, the singer lauded King Khan’s humility. He wrote that while there were many stars from the film industry present, Shah Rukh Khan especially came up on stage to greet him.

Kailash Kher wrote in Hindi, “Whenever we meet, we meet with great honour and respect. Actor Shah Rukh Khan greeting all the members of @bandkailasa demonstrates his elegance and humility. Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s engagement

Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant got engaged today in a ceremony at the Ambani residence, Antilia. As per a statement released by the family, the Ambanis, along with their close friends and family attended the engagement ceremony. It was a traditional ceremony with Gujarati Hindu rituals such as Gol Dhana and Chunari Vidhi.

According to the statement, Isha Ambani and other members of the Ambani family visited Radhika’s family home to formally invite them. The couple, along with their families, then headed to the temple to seek Lord Krishna’s blessings. The main ceremony began with Ganesh puja, and it was followed by Gol Dhana, and Chunari Vidhi.

Indian Express reported that the family members performed a surprise dance number, and it was led by Nita Ambani. Post the rituals, the couple exchanged rings.

‘No ‘G’ in this world greater than Mata ji and Pita ji’: Mukesh Ambani reminds the importance of parents to students

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, recently addressed graduating students at Pandit Deendayal Energy University Convocation and discussed the value of parents in children’s lives.

“Let me tell you something in your own lingo – the language of the youth. Nowadays, every youngster is excited about 4G and now 5G. But there is no ‘G’ in this world greater than Mata ji and Pita ji,” he said.

“Today is your day. The arc lights are on you. But standing in the wings are your parents and elders… it’s a very special day for them too. They have waited eagerly to see you walk up to the stage and receive your graduation certificate. It has been their lifelong dream. Don’t ever forget the struggles they underwent and the sacrifices they made to bring you here. Their contribution to your success is immeasurable,” he added.

India’s bright young minds from all over the country, according to Ambani, will help it grow from a $3 trillion economy to a $40 trillion economy by 2047, he said.

Reliance Jio, owned by Mukesh Ambani, has successfully introduced 5G services in a number of cities in India.

Mukesh Ambani’s daughter Isha Ambani, son-in-law Anand Piramal blessed with twins

Mukesh Ambani’s daughter Isha Ambani and son-in-law Anand Piramal have been blessed with twins, the Piramal and Ambani families informed on Sunday.

In a statement, the families said: “We are delighted to share that our children Isha and Anand have been blessed by the Almighty with twins on 19th November 2022.”

Isha and the babies – baby girl Aadiya and baby boy Krishna – are doing well. “We seek your blessings and good wishes for Aadiya, Krishna, Isha and Anand in this most important phase of their life,” the families said.

Isha tied the knot with Anand at a star-studded event at Antillia in December 2018. Anand is the son of billionaire Ajay Piramal and Swati Piramal, who own the Piramal Group, a global business conglomerate.

Earlier this year, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, announced that the group’s retail segment will be headed by Isha.

Speaking at the company’s AGM, Ambani introduced Isha as the leader of the retail business as he invited her to give a presentation on the integration of the e-commerce unit with WhatsApp and foray into FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods).

Anand is Executive Director at Piramal Group. He currently runs the financial services businesses of the group. He also oversees Piramal’s Alternatives business which counts CDPQ, Bain Capital, CPPIB, IFC, and Apollo as its partners.

An Indian is leading the world’s billionaire list in terms of wealth creation in 2022

Gujarat’s very own Gautam Adani, the chairman and founder of the Indian multinational conglomerate Adani Group, outdid all the world’s top billionaires in terms of wealth creation in 2022 far. All thanks to the ongoing rally in the group’s stocks.

With a rise of $59.1 billion year-to-date (YTD) in total net worth, the entrepreneur is the third richest individual in the world. His total net worth stood at $136 billion on November 11, 2022, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire index.

On a year-to-date basis, shares of Adani Power have surged 261 per cent to Rs 360.10 from Rs 99.75 on December 31, 2021. It was followed by Adani Enterprises (up 135 per cent), Adani Total Gas (up 122 per cent), Adani Transmission (up 90 per cent), Adani Green Energy (up 65 per cent) and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (up 22 per cent). Adani Wilmar, which got listed on bourses in February 2022, has also rallied 193 so far against its issue price of Rs 230.

Other world’s billionaire

Founder of Susquehanna International Group Jeff Yass, who is the world’s 31st richest individual, witnessed a rise of $29.6 billion in his total net worth in the ongoing calendar year, according to publicly available data. The world’s 20th richest Zhang Yiming and the world’s 95th richest Rodolphe Saade & family also see a rise of $10.4 billion and $4.49 billion, respectively, in their respective total net worth in 2022.

On the other hand, the world’s richest individual Elon Musk’s total net worth tanked $86.60 billion to $184 billion on a year-to-date basis. The sharp fall came amid the selloff in Musk-owned Tesla shares. The share price of Tesla tanked over 52 per cent YTD.

With a total net worth of $153 billion, the chairman of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton Bernard Arnault is the second richest individual globally. His net worth also plunged $24.8 billion in the ongoing calendar year-to-date. Among the other major top guns, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett also witnessed a fall of $72.70 billion, $26.30 billion and $3.03 billion in their respective total net worth in 2022 so far.

Besides Gautam Adani, India’s other businessmen such as the founder of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries’ Dilip Shangvi, chairman of telecom major Bharti Airtel. Sunil Mittal and founder and former chief executive officer of Eicher Motors, Vikram Lal also witnessed a growth of somewhere between $1 billion-$1.50 billion in their total net worth, the data showed.

Other major industrialists including Reliance Industries chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani, HCL Technologies’ Shiv Nadar and Wipro’s Azim Premji see a fall of $1 billion, $7.63 billion and $17.30 billion in their respective total net worth in the ongoing calendar year.

Overall, the ongoing year stood highly tumultuous for the global business environment due to the ongoing geopolitical crisis between Ukraine and Russia and rising inflation which led to hikes in interest rates.
