  • Lionsgate’s ‘Michael’ Trailer Becomes Most-Watched Music Biopic Launch With 116.2M Views

    [ad_1]

Michael is already leaving an impact on viewers.

Lionsgate released the first official teaser trailer for the forthcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, on Thursday. And after its initial 24 hours, the views racked up to 116.2 million globally, according to WaveMetrix, making it the most-viewed trailer for any music biopic in history and now holding the title for Lionsgate as the studio’s largest trailer debut.

Jaafar Jackson, nephew of the late Michael Jackson, stars as the King of Pop. In the first footage, Jaafar is seen recreating the musician’s iconic dance moves, such as the moonwalk, and it also teases a clip of the “Thriller” music video. The trailer will play in theaters starting next week.

Additional castmembers include Miles Teller as attorney John Branca, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Kat Graham as Diana Ross, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones and Juliano Krue Valdi as a young Michael.

Here is the official synopsis: “The film tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins.”

Antoine Fuqua directs the feature with a script by John Logan. Meanwhile, Graham King, John Branca and John McClain serve as producers. Michael hits theaters April 24, 2026.

  • Lionsgate Admits Using Fake Quotes in Megalopolis Trailer

Lionsgate Admits Using Fake Quotes in Megalopolis Trailer

    [ad_1]

A new Megalopolis trailer dropped earlier today—and it played into the mixed early buzz surrounding Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project, highlighting tepid reviews of his past films (Apocalypse Now, The Godfather) that are now considered masterpieces. But what seemed like a clever gimmick a few hours ago now feels like a stunt gone very wrong. Studio Lionsgate has just admitted—after Vulture and other online sleuths began poking deeper into those reviews—that the quotes were not real.

In a statement to Variety, Lionsgate took full responsibility. “Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for Megalopolis,” the statement provided to the trade read. “We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”

While the trailer has since been removed, it contained quotes from legendary critics including Pauline Kael, Andrew Sarris, and Roger Ebert—writers whose opinions helped shaped the public’s moviegoing choices for decades, and whose reviews are very easily accessible in both print and online.

Gizmodo’s Rhett Jones theorized that someone could have used a chatbot program to come up with the false quotes; here’s what chatGPT came up with when he asked it about Ebert’s review of Coppola’s 1992 horror romance Bram Stoker’s Dracula, one of the examples cited in the Megalopolis trailer:

(Any actual use of a chatbot to come up with the quotes used in the trailer is unconfirmed; this was just an experiment.)

The trailer quoted Ebert as referring to Dracula as having “style over substance,” a phrase that does not appear in his actual review (he does describe it as “an exercise in feverish excess”), but does appear nearly verbatim in the sample chatGPT prompt. (io9 reached out to Lionsgate earlier today for comment regarding Vulture’s story about the fabricated quotes, and did not hear a response before Variety and other trades printed the studio’s “we screwed up” statement.)

Kael, Sarris, and Ebert are no longer alive, but one critic who spotted his name in the Megalopolis trailer—Owen Glieberman, formerly of Entertainment Weekly and now at Variety—took note and had a response.

Speaking to his current outlet, he pointed out that the whole idea behind the trailer itself—that Coppola’s best works were misunderstood at first—was a shaky one to begin with. “Critics loved The Godfather,” he told Variety. “And though Apocalypse Now was divisive, it received a lot of crucial critical support. As far as me calling Bram Stoker’s Dracula ‘a beautiful mess,’ I only wish I’d said that! Regarding that film, it now sounds kind.”

Megalopolis is slated for a September 27 release in theaters and IMAX. It stars Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D. B. Sweeney, Dustin Hoffman, and Aubrey Plaza.

  • Between Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi, Elvis’s Real Accent Never Stood a Chance

Between Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi, Elvis’s Real Accent Never Stood a Chance

    [ad_1]

Elvis’s real accent has left the building. Following the release of A24’s “Priscilla” trailer, Jacob Elordi’s thick drawl is already being compared to Austin Butler’s unshakeable Southern twang. “Jacob Elordi looks and sounds like Elvis Presley; much more so than Austin Butler did,” one commenter wrote in reaction to the Oct. 3 video. Others had their doubts.

One person noted that the “goofiness” of Elordi’s Elvis accent might detract from the suspenseful nature of the Sofia Coppola-led film. Some also compared Elordi’s dialect to his hot-headed “Euphoria” character, Nate Jacobs. “Looks good but he sounds a little like the giraffe from the ‘Madagascar’ movie,” a particularly candid viewer wrote, referencing David Schwimmer’s lovable Melman.

Of course, Butler was not immune from accent-centric criticism either. Throughout his reign as the king of rock n’ roll, the rigorous schedule for Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” seemed to take a toll on his Southern California vocals. His movie accent intercepted speeches, popped up in daily conversations, and even became the subject of interviews, forcing him to evaluate just how immersed he really was. “I don’t think I sound like him still, but I guess [it must be] because I hear it a lot,” he told Variety in the press room at the 2023 Golden Globes. “I had three years where [Elvis] was my only focus in life, so I’m sure there’s just pieces of my DNA that will always be linked in that way.”

Now Elordi gets to take a turn in the proverbial hot seat, portraying a darker side to Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s relationship with a deep, gravelly accent to match. Elordi is used to playing the villain, and maybe that’s why his take on the elusive accent already seems somewhat familiar. At this point though, we’re not convinced any actor will completely nail it. Ultimately, both versions are artistic portrayals and should be treated as such. No matter what, the Elvis accent has reentered the cultural zeitgeist, and that’s what counts.

  • Babe, Wake Up: A New Austin Butler Accent Just Dropped

Babe, Wake Up: A New Austin Butler Accent Just Dropped

    [ad_1]

The new trailer for “The Bikeriders” just dropped, and with it came the question: will we hear Austin Butler’s own voice ever again? Having just shaken his infamous Elvis Presley drawl, the Sept. 6 teaser proved that old habits die hard for certain Oscar nominees. In his new role as Benny — the daring bad-boy of the fictional Vandals motorcycle club in Chicago — Butler tries his hand at a Midwestern accent. Abandoning any friendly “you betchas,” he rarely speaks above a low growl, leaving costars Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer to cover most of the lingual bases.

Butler previously forgot to stop speaking like the King of Rock n’ Roll long after filming on “Elvis” wrapped in 2021. He told Graham Norton that all the discourse on social media initially made him feel “self-conscious,” attributing the change in his voice to the singing he did for the movie. Later, at the 2023 Golden Globes, he admitted it was hard for him to distinguish between his own voice and Elvis’s. “I can’t really reflect on it too much. It’s just this process — I don’t know the difference,” he said. “I don’t think I sound like him still, but I guess [it must be] because I hear it a lot.”

To be perfectly honest, we’re not all that mad at this new Midwestern Butler. Although we have yet to hear more than a few words from his unpredictable character (including, “you’d have to kill me to get this jacket off”), assuming the same “process” is at play, we’re prepared to hear this accent well after “The Bikeriders” drops on Dec. 1. Read on to find out everything else we know about Butler’s upcoming appearance.

  • Kingsley Ben-Adir Transforms Into Bob Marley in First Trailer For the Reggae Icon’s Biopic

Kingsley Ben-Adir Transforms Into Bob Marley in First Trailer For the Reggae Icon’s Biopic

    [ad_1]

Kingsley Ben-Adir is legendary musician and reggae pioneer Bob Marley in Paramount Pictures’s forthcoming biopic, “Bob Marley: One Love.” The “One Night in Miami” breakout star was announced to portray the famed Jamaican artist in February 2022 in a film expected to celebrate the life and legacy of Marley — and we finally have a first look at his transformation.

Paramount dropped the first trailer for the sweeping movie on July 6, billing it as Marley’s “powerful story of overcoming adversity and the journey behind his revolutionary music.” The film is directed by “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green, with “King Richard” writer Zach Baylin behind the screenplay. The project was also produced in partnership with the Marley family — a crucial part for Green and Marley’s son, Ziggy, one of the film’s producers.

“To get the blessing of Ziggy and the family to come on and be the steward of the ship was significant for me because I knew that I was gonna get access to things that aren’t in the public domain: real conversations and memories from people who were there in the room,” Green told Entertainment Weekly of giving the movie authenticity. Ziggy added that making his father’s biopic was “exciting and emotional” and he “was very focused on making sure that we represented him right.” “Being given that responsibility to help Reinaldo was a very serious thing for me,” he continued. “We explored different elements of Bob that people don’t know, different emotions that he went through. I actually learned some stuff, too. As someone who was there in this time period, it brings back a lot of memories and things that were hidden inside of me before. It was a very emotional journey.”

Unlike most biopics that encompass a majority of a subject’s life, EW reported that “Bob Marley: One Love” will hone in on the events that led up to Marley’s performance at the One Love Peace Concert in 1978, which occurred amid Jamaica’s violent political crisis at the time. “We knew from the very beginning that we didn’t want to do a cradle-to-grave story,” Green added. “So it’s a snapshot of his life that speaks to his entire life. There are flashes to his earlier life and childhood, but it’s not about when he was born and when he died. We felt this movie was more about how his music lives on and how his message continues to spread.”

Prior to taking on the role of Marley, Ben-Adir played the late Malcolm X in Regina King’s Oscar-nominated film, receiving critical praise for his performance. The British actor also starred in a number of TV shows, including “Love Life,” “High Fidelity,” “Peaky Blinders,” “Secret Invasion,” and more. Paramount saw much success with the release of its 2019 biopic for Elton John, “Rocketman,” and it also has a Bee Gees biopic queued up — set to be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Now it looks to score another big win by bringing Marley’s story to the big screen for the very first time.
