‘Jurassic World’ Director: There ‘Probably Should Have Only Been One ‘Jurassic Park’

Here is the problem with Jurassic Park: It is a fabulous movie that is very difficult to make sequels to. Because Jurassic Park is about people coming to realize that its central concept — a theme park filled with living dinosaurs — is an absolutely horrible idea. So to make sequels, you must focus on people who, for one reason or another, ignore that central fact and go back to islands full of dinosaurs. To do so, they must either a) be incredibly stupid or b) act like they are incredibly stupid. In The Lost World, Dr. Ian Malcolm, who almost got stomped into oblivion by a T.rex, goes to a second Jurassic Park island to find his missing girlfriend. In Jurassic Park III, Dr. Alan Grant willingly goes back to one of the parks to help a couple who think they can just wander onto this island to find their missing son. Years later we got Jurassic World, which basically redid the original concept all over again, with a brand-new park full of dinosaurs, and a whole new human cast who think this time the dinosaurs won’t rampage through the guests. Guess what happened!

And so on. Now the guy who directed that movie and the recent Jurassic World: Dominion, Colin Trevorrow, has basically conceded that very point. In a new interview with Empire he admits Jurassic Park is “inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park.” That explains his approach to Dominion, which was less about dinosaurs (although at the end of the movie the heroes wind up back in yet another nature preserve full of dinosaurs that quickly falls into chaos) and instead focused on a story involving giant killer locusts. Trevorrow claimed he tried to “change the DNA of the franchise” because he he wanted to “tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist” but that didn’t just involve sending more people to an island of dinosaurs. Well, hey when the Jurassic Park scientists changed the DNA of dinosaurs, that worked out great, right? Right?!?

Trevorrow also revealed that even though all of the marketing materials for Jurassic World: Dominion treated it like the final film in this franchise, there is “more to come” involving many of the new characters that were introduced in his film. He claimed that before he saw the movie posters that called Dominion “the epic conclusion of the Jurassic era” that he “never knew that this was the ending of the franchise.” He told Empire that he felt “it might have been clearer if they’d said, ‘The end of an era’, as opposed to all of it.” Well okay then.

Jurassic World: Dominion is now streaming on Peacock, in both its theatrical and extended cuts.

  • ‘Planet of the Apes’ Reveals First Look and Title of Next Film

‘Planet of the Apes’ Reveals First Look and Title of Next Film

It’s time to return to the Planet of the Apes.

20th Century Studios announced today that the next installment in the long-running sci-fi franchise will go into production next month. They also revealed the film’s official title: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, while also confirming the rumor that the movie is not some kind of remake or reboot, but rather a continuation of the most recent Planet of the Apes trilogy that began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and concluded with 2017’s War For the Planet of the Apes.

The official press release describes the project thusly:

This film starts an all-new chapter in the “Planet of the Apes” saga, picking up many years after the conclusion of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes.” The screenplay is by Josh Friedman (“War of the Worlds”), Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), and Patrick Aison (“Prey”). Joe Hartwick Jr. (“The Maze Runner” trilogy), Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Jason Reed (“Mulan”) are the film’s producers. Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping are the executive producers.

Here is the full concept art drawing that they also unveiled today as well:

KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
    20th Century Studios

While Kingdom is set in the same fictional universe as the previous Apes trilogy that starred Andy Serkis as the ape leader Caesar, he will not appear in the film. Instead It’s Owen Teague will star, along with Freya Allen and Peter Macon. The film will be directed by The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball.

Will the Apes series once again return to the franchise’s central metaphors about racial and social strife? A movie set far after the events of War could potentially take the franchise in a totally new direction — and after nine previous movies, a little change of pace wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is expected to premiere in theaters in 2024.

  • ‘Bones and All’ Trailer: Russell and Chalamet, Hungry For Love

‘Bones and All’ Trailer: Russell and Chalamet, Hungry For Love

The director and star of Call Me By Your Name, Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet reunite for another tale of young love this fall — although this story is just a wee bit darker.

It’s called Bones and All and it blends romance and horror. I don’t want to spoil th especifics for people who don’t know the material (it’s based on a book by Camille DeAngelis). But let’s just say this love story is a bit meatier and biting than the arthouse hit Call Me By Your Name. Chalmet stars opposite Taylor Russell, and the rest of the cast also includes Michael Stuhlbarg, André Holland, Chloë Sevigny, David Gordon Green, Jessica Harper, Jake Horowitz, and Mark Rylance.

Here is the first trailer for the film:

So far, advanced reviews of the movie have been very positive. Bones and All premiered at the Venice Film Festival back at the start of September and got mostly enthusiastic notices. The film will next appear at the New York Film Festival before heading into release in November. Here is the film’s official synopsis:

BONES AND ALL is a story of first love between Maren, a young woman learning how to survive on the margins of society, and Lee, an intense and disenfranchised drifter; a liberating road odyssey of two young people coming into their own, searching for identity and chasing beauty in a perilous world that cannot abide who they are.

Bones and All will open in select theaters on November 18. It will expand into wider release on Thanksgiving.

  • Kevin Feige Hints That Scarlet Witch May Return

Kevin Feige Hints That Scarlet Witch May Return

The following post contains SPOILERS for the end of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Just FYI.

When last we saw Scarlet Witch, she was looking kind of, well, dead. Having finally recognized just how twisted and corrupted by power she had become at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she used her magic to destroy the shrine atop Mount Wundagore, with her still inside it. RIP Wanda.

But in comics, nobody is dead forever — especially when you don’t see a dead body lying on the ground. (Just ask Hugh Jackman; we did see his dead body and he’s making a Deadpool movie now.) So it stands to reason we might see Scarlet Witch again somewhere out there in the grand and glorious Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Asked about the potential for another return from Wanda, Marvel’s Kevin Feige told Variety that it was all but a certainty — without actually saying it. “There really is so much more to explore … we still haven’t touched on many of her core storylines from the comics,” he told them.

And what of dumping an ancient temple on her head? You guys know she’s like an all-powerful magic being, right? Here’s what Feige said:

I don’t know that we saw her under rubble? I saw a tower coming down, and a little red flash. I don’t know what that means.

Feige also noted that he’d work with Elizabeth Olsen “for another 100 years if we could” and added “anything’s possible in the multiverse.” Based on those quotes, I’d bet my condo in Kamar-Taj we see Olsen back in Avengers: Secret Wars — presumably the ultimate endpoint of all Marvel’s current multiversal shenanigans — if not sooner.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now streaming on Disney+.

Marvel Comics That Can’t Appear in the MCU

Some of Marvel’s most popular comics can never be adapted to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, mostly because of issues with copyrights.
