Lucasfilm Is Developing a New ‘Star Wars’ Movie

    [ad_1]

Star Wars’ past was in movies. Its present is very much on television, with shows like The MandalorianThe Book of Boba Fett, and Andor. Its future, seemingly, is both.

A few weeks after a report that Lucasfilm was developing a new Star Wars movie with Lost and Watchmen producer Damon Lindelof comes word (via Deadline) that the company is in talks with director Shawn Levy to “to develop to direct a Star Wars film.” Levy is currently working on the upcoming Deadpool sequel that will feature both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

Levy also previously worked for Disney on their pandemic-era blockbuster Free Guy, also starring Reynolds. Their report has no details on a premise or a writer, but claims Levy would make this Star Wars movie after he finishes Deadpool 3. That movie is currently scheduled release on November 8, 2024, so this movie wouldn’t be seen probably until 2026 at the absolute earliest.

This would also be a different Star Wars movie from the one Lindelof is supposedly working on. Other Star Wars movies supposedly in various states of development at Lucasfilm include a project from Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi and one from Marvel Cinematic Universe architect Kevin Feige.

The last Star Wars movie to open in theaters was 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, which did decent business but was not well-received by many fans. Since then, Lucasfilm has devoted almost all of its creative energy to building a Star Wars galaxy on Disney+ and streaming television, much of which has proven to be quite popular and successful. Whenever Star Wars returns to theaters, the question will be: Now that Disney has conditioned its audience to watch these things on streaming, will they once again line up to pay $15 to see it on the big screen? So far, it’s worked for Marvel, but Marvel hasn’t really stopped releasing movies, except during the worst of the pandemic. We’ll have to see what Star Wars’ hiatus from multiplexes for at least five years does to demand when it finally returns.

  • ‘Gears of War’ Getting a Movie and Series on Netflix

‘Gears of War’ Getting a Movie and Series on Netflix

    [ad_1]

One of the best-selling video gamed franchises of all time is finally getting an adaptation. Not just one though. Gears of War will get a film and a series. Multiple production companies have been trying to get a project rolling since at least 2007, but it seems that Netflix is the only one that has succeeded. For a time, New Line Cinema held the rights. Then, Universal was planning to produce a feature film around the time of the release of Gears Of War 4. That attempt also stalled out.

According to Netflix’s press release, the service “will first adapt the video game saga into a live action feature film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow.” They are partnering on both with with series developer The Coalition. For those unfamiliar with the plot of Gears of War, here is how Netflix described it:

A society divided and on the brink of collapse faces total extinction by the Locust, a monstrous threat from below. Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is now charged with leading humanity’s last stand. The series has been critically acclaimed for redefining the tactical third-person and co-operative shooter genre and has one of gaming’s most passionate fanbases.

As of now, there’s no actual cast or crew attached to either the film or the animated series that are now in the production pipeline. That being said, since Netflix came out and announced that there are adaptations in the works, it’s likely that we’ll hear some news soon!

  • Daniel Kaluuya’s Spider-Punk Joins ‘Across the Spider-Verse’

    Daniel Kaluuya’s Spider-Punk Joins ‘Across the Spider-Verse’

    [ad_1]

The Spider-Verse is getting even bigger.

While the upcoming Into the Spider-Verse sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, will feature many of the characters from the original animated hit like Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales and Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen, there will be new characters as well, including Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 (who had a very brief cameo at the end of Into the Spider-Verse’s closing credits) and Jason Schwartzman as the super-villain the Spot.

Among the new cast members: The dynamic looking “Spider-Punk” who will be voiced in the film, per a variety of trade reports, by Nope and Black Panther star Daniel Kaluuya. First introduced in 2015’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10, Spider-Punk comes from an alternate dimension where Hobie Brown (AKA the Prowler in the main Marvel Universe) gets spider powers and uses them to rebel against his dimensions version of Norman Osborn, who is the President of the United States.

While Kaluuya playing the character is news, the fact that Spider-Punk would be in the film is not completely a surprise. For months, toy store shelves have been filled with Across the Spider-Verse “Spider-Punk Web Blast” branded guitars.

If said toys are to be believed there are several other still-technically unannounced Spider-Man characters who will appear in the film. (If you don’t want these minor spoilers, skip to the next paragraph). Other merchandise for Across the Spider-Verse (which was originally supposed to open this fall and thus had a bunch of its toys hit shelves months before the film’s release) includes pictures of the Scarlet Spider; Hasbro has also already released a “Cyborg Spider-Woman” figure, a new concept that’s loosely based on the Cyborg Spider-Man who appeared in 1990s Marvel Comics. (That guy was just Peter Parker with a few short-lived robotic enhancements.)

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and written by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to open in theaters on June 2, 2023. (A second sequel will follow in 2024.) Here is the first trailer for the film:

  • Sylvester Stallone Says ‘Creed III’ Is ‘Quite Different’ Than What He Would Have Done

Sylvester Stallone Says ‘Creed III’ Is ‘Quite Different’ Than What He Would Have Done

    [ad_1]

Creed III may be a masterpiece. It might be a flop. Either way, it will mark a turning point in the franchise: The first movie from the Rocky/Creed series without an appearance from Sylvester Stallone, the man who created Rocky Balboa, wrote or co-wrote almost every previous film, and played the character for more than 40 years. Rocky may be referenced in the film — his name is mentioned in its trailer — but Stallone himself is not in it.

That news comes as Stallone himself has publicly voiced his frustration with the franchise; not so much with Creed III but with the fact that he, as the creator and primary writer and star of the franchise (until now) does not actually own a piece of it. At some point, Stallone signed away the rights to the material, which is now controlled by the series’ producers, who have the legal right to make more Rocky and Creed movies without Stallone. In an Instagram post in July, Stallone wrote ““I really would like [to] have at least a little WHAT’s LEFT of my RIGHTS back, before passing it on to ONLY YOUR CHILDREN – I believe That would be a FAIR gesture.”

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter tied to his TV series Tulsa King, Stallone addressed the conflict and noted that any kind of resolution is “never gonna happen.” He also called Creed III a “regretful situation” because he knows “what have could have been” — and now presumably won’t be because Rocky is not a character in it.

    He added…

It was taken in a direction that is quite different than I would’ve taken it. It’s a different philosophy – Irwin Winkler’s and Michael B. Jordan’s. I wish them well, but I’m much more of a sentimentalist. I like my heroes getting beat up, but I just don’t want them going into that dark space. I just feel people have enough darkness.

The premise of Creed III finds Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed confronted by a man from his past, played by Jonathan Majors, who went to prison for years, supposedly on Adonis’ behalf. That sets up — what else? — a major boxing match between the two.

Stallone would know better than us about how light or dark Creed III is, but the Rocky movies themselves certainly had plenty of darkness. True, Rocky himself usually wound up victorious at the end of the film (although not always). But through the years Rocky lost his trainer Mickey, his wife Adrian, and his career after being diagnosed with brain trauma from too many fights. They weren’t always sunshine and rainbows for the Italian Stallion. I guess we’ll have to see what the film looks like when it comes out. Creed III is scheduled to open in theaters — without Stallone or Rocky — on March 3, 2023.

Why Doesn’t the MCU Have a Team of Super-Villains?

    [ad_1]

Marvel has loads of super-villain teams in its comics. There’s the Frightful Four, the Dark Avengers, the Sinister Six, Omega Flight, the Sons of the Serpent, the Zodiac, and of course the Masters of Evil, led by Baron Zemo. But so far, none of Marvel’s many super-villain teams have ever been adapted to a movie or TV show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Why is that? In our latest MCU video, we take a look at Marvel’s super-villain teams, and try to figure out why none have made the jump to movies or shows. We also look at how the Masters of Evil could come to the MCU, why we were disappointed by the announcement of the team lineup in the Thunderbolts movie, and look at how the arrival of Kang could finally give us that first true MCU super-villain group. Watch it below:

If you liked that video on the MCU and its lack of super-villain teams, check out more of our videos below, including our theories about Kang and his connections to Shang-Chi’s Ten Rings and Ms. Marvel’s bangle, why Wonder Man is such an exciting addition to the MCU, and one on Kang’s evil plan in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. • James Gunn Promises a ‘New’ DC Movie and TV Universe

James Gunn Promises a ‘New’ DC Movie and TV Universe

    [ad_1]

Strange but true: The guy in charge of the world of DC movies (along with producer Peter Safran) is James Gunn, the writer and director of such movies as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. Gunn and Safran are now the CEOs of DC Studios — and the first men to hold those titles — and so they are beginning the process of reshaping the DC Cinematic Universe.

So what are they going to do? It will take years for any of their plans to come to fruition, but Gunn is already tweeting about being on the job. In a thread he posted this weekend, he wrote that he and Safran are “listening & open to everything as we embark on this journey” but noted that his initial focus going forward is “hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects.”

It could have just been an oversight, but it is interesting that Gunn only referred to it as the “DCU” not the “DCEU” or DC Extended Universe, which has been the official term for the web of interconnected DC movies released since Man of Steel in 2013. (Those films include Justice LeagueWonder WomanAquaman, the recent Black Adam, and the upcoming The Flash.) When Gunn says he’s hammering out a “new DCU” does that mean literally they’re starting a whole new universe with a new continuity and history, or simply a turn of phrase because with he and Safran in charge, they’re moving in new direction? It’s not clear.

The next WBD movie based on DC Comics, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is scheduled to open in theaters on March 17, 2023. Meanwhile, Gunn’s next film is for Marvel, not DC, as he’s got Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming to theaters next year. (He’s also got a Guardians holiday special on Disney+ before that as well. Those press tours should be interesting.)

  • Warner Bros. Wants to Make More ‘Harry Potter’ Movies

Warner Bros. Wants to Make More ‘Harry Potter’ Movies

    [ad_1]

You do not need me to tell you that the word that drives all of Hollywood movies these days isn’t even a word. It’s two letters: IP. No franchise is ever truly dead so long as there is more money to be made from it.

For example, the Harry Potter story was always intended as a finite one, which concluded in both J.K. Rowling’s novels and the movie adaptations with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The wizarding world has been expanded in different ways since then, like the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movies and the Harry Potter stage play, but Rowling hasn’t written a new Harry Potter novel in well over a decade.

But that isn’t stopping Warner Bros., the studio that produced the Harry Potter franchise, from looking for ways to start it back up again. During a call with investors this week, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, said that his company‘s focus is “franchises” — including, potentially, Harry Potter. As he put it:

We haven’t had a Superman movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a Harry Potter in 15 years. The DC movies and the Harry Potter movies provided a lot of the profits for Warner Bros…over the past 25 years.

Zaslav’s numbers aren’t quite right. The last solo Superman movie, Man of Steel, came out nine years ago. And the final Harry Potter film was in 2011. (Dating the series end to “15 years” ago also, quite interestingly, ignores the fact that since then the company has released three Potter prequels in the form of the Fantastic Beasts series. That probably tells you a lot about how well those movies have done for the company.) Zaslav said WBD is very intent on making new films “if we can do something with J.K. on Harry Potter going forward.”

That would seem to be a not insignificant if, since Rowling has so far resisted the pressure to write a new Harry Potter novel (and continues to make enormous amounts of money from the merchandising and licensing of the ones she already did write). The ball — or I guess the Golden Snitch in this case — is in her court.

The Best and Worst Movie Titles in History

    [ad_1]

The Breakfast Club could have been released as The Lunch BunchBack to the Future was almost called Space Man From Pluto. For a brief second Toy Story was Toyz in the Hood.

In cases such as these, not even a single frame of the actual movies would have been changed, just the name. And yet it’s hard to imagine something called Space Man From Pluto becomes a generational favorite in the way that Back to the Future did. On the flip side, you have to believe the reception of other movies would have been greatly enhanced if they’d only chosen a better title. (It’s been 15 years and we still want to know: What the hell is a quantum of solace?!?)

As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. For movies, that first impression is their title. There is an art to crafting a title just as there is an art to making a movie. Below we have compiled two different lists: One featuring those motion pictures who mastered the art of the movie title, and another ranking those that did not. Take these films as valuable exemplars and as constructive criticism, respectively. Also note that we are judging the titles here, not necessarily the movies. A great movie can have a bad title and vice versa — although it much more frequently seems the case that a masterpiece has a title to match, and a stinker has an equally crummy title.

And now, here are the best and worst movie titles in history…

The Best Movie Titles in History

  • 10 Movies That Changed the Ending of the Book They’re Based On

10 Movies That Changed the Ending of the Book They’re Based On

    [ad_1]

When a book gets turned into a movie, there are, of course, going to be some creative liberties taken. However, the amount of creative liberties varies from film to film. Some directors choose to include as many details from the book as possible, altering very little — if any — of the source material. Others deviate greatly from the original book, resulting in a movie that ends up telling a drastically different story than the novel it’s based on.

Oftentimes, the most significant changes happen at the end of the film. Crafting a satisfying ending has often been a challenge of filmmaking, and sometimes, the ending of a book just isn’t suited for the big screen. This has the potential to divide fans of the original book, as some may have wished to see a more faithful adaptation of the ending. Those who haven’t read the book are experiencing the story fresh for the first time, so they may not mind the changes as much.

A book’s ending may be changed because it’s too bleak, or because it’s too complex to express in a visual format. No movie can capture every single detail from the book, and the elements that are omitted can have an impact on what the ending is. Just because a movie changes the ending from the original book doesn’t make it bad — there are plenty of excellent films that benefit from the new interpretation.

Here are ten movies based on books with endings that differ from their original stories. (NOTE: Some spoilers follow for both these movies and their books.)

  • 10 More Trailers With Sad Covers of Popular Songs

10 More Trailers With Sad Covers of Popular Songs

    [ad_1]

One of the first articles I wrote when I joined ScreenCrush some (gulp) eight years ago was a list of recent trailers with sad cover versions of popular songs. At the time, they seemed to be everywhere. In the wake of the trailer for The Social Network — which paired images of social media with the sounds of a women’s choir singing Radiohead’s “Creep” to brilliant effect — the concept of inserting bleak and/or haunting renditions of popular songs into trailers had exploded. It seemed worth documenting, so that’s what I did.

A year and a half later, I had enough examples for a second list. Two years after that, I did another. A fourth followed in the fall of 2020. And now here we sit, two years later, and there are still so many trailers like this — not just for movies, but for television shows and video games as well.

Will I ever stop writing these lists? Yes, if Hollywood trailer editors stop making them. Almost eight years later, they keep churning them out. Here are 10 more recent examples.

    1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Featuring “The Super Mario Bros. Theme”

Who could forget the upbeat cheerful sounds of the theme to Super Mario Bros.? That sound is about as iconic as video game music gets. And that’s one of the reasons to twist and slow down a classic song in a trailer; to make people feel warm and fuzzy by reminding them of something they know and love, and then to twist that song in a new direction as if to subliminally suggest the film delivers a novel approach to something the viewer already knows and loves. Slowing down that Mario Bros. theme, and playing it on a twinkly piano, suggests this movie is a grand, mind-blowing adventure.

    2. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
    Featuring “No Woman, No Cry”

This is definitely an interesting example of the sad cover song trope. The trailer starts with a melancholic cover of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” but eventually that gives way to Kendrick Lamar’s more upbeat “Alright.” I haven’t seen Wakanda Forever yet, but the combination of songs seems to acknowledge the grief fans collectively feel about the death of Chadwick Boseman, while implying that the franchise will somehow find a way to move on in his absence.

    3. Red Rocket
    Featuring “Bye Bye Bye”

Here is another meaningful use of this idea. Red Rocket is about a down-on-his-luck porn star who returns home after years in Los Angeles. The original “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC came out during the character’s glory days; playing a sad version in the trailer underscores just how far he’s fallen all those years later.

    4. Last Night in Soho
    Featuring “Downtown”

The song “Downtown” by Petula Clark takes on major significance in Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho, so using it in the trailer is not simply trying to capitalize on a trend. (Of course, as relevant as it is to the content of the actual movie, it still qualifies here as well.)

    5. Slumberland
    Featuring “Clocks”

Yes, that’s an instrumental (and somewhat somber) version of Coldplay’s “Clocks” that plays during the trailer to Netflix’s Slumberland. As you’re about to see, Netflix is a fan of sad covers of pop songs in trailers.

    6. Wendell & Wild
Featuring “How You Like Me Now?”

Jordan Peele is another fan of sad covers — or at least cleverly downbeat remixes — in his trailers. A version of “I Got 5 On It” was used in the trailer for UsNope messed with the tempo of Stevie Wonder’s “Fingertips.” Peele’s animated movie with director Henry Selick, Wendell & Wild, uses a sinister cover version of The Heavy’s “How You Like Me Now?”

    7. M3GAN
Featuring “It’s Nice to Have a Friend”

It is not nice to have a friend, you see. In fact, if your friend is an advanced artificial intelligence that looks like a little girl but murders people like Jason Voorhees on steroids it is not nice at all. That is the ironic point of that song choice. Just want to make sure we’re all on the same page here.

    8. Dumbo
    Featuring “Baby Mine”

The original “Baby Mine” isn’t exactly a toe-tapper; it’s a lullaby sung by Mrs. Jumbo to Dumbo. So the version here isn’t quite a sad cover of a popular song. More an even-more-sad-and-operatic version of a popular song, and its use indicates the epic emotions of this live-action remake. (At least that was the intent.)

    9. Midnight Suns
    Featuring “Enter Sandman”

Although this trend is best known from movie trailers, ads for other things have gotten into the act too. This Marvel video game, for example, has a sad cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” I imagine the words “Exit light / Enter night” were the primary reason the song was selected for a game about the superhero team Midnight Suns.

    10. The Magicians
    Featuring “This Magic Moment”

Do you get it? Because they’re magicians? And the song is “This Magic Moment”? You get it.

  • Rides Based on Old Movies You Won’t Believe Still Exist

Rides Based on Old Movies You Won’t Believe Still Exist

    [ad_1]

Theme parks have to simultaneously satisfy two different audiences: People who are nostalgic for attractions they experienced in their youths, and tourists on the hunt for newer and bigger thrills. When to update or replace an aging ride is a constant question for amusement parks. Some attractions feel dated after a decade or less. Some remain timeless after a century of operation.

That push and pull is even more pronounced when a ride is based on a movie or TV franchise — because then it’s not just the attraction that has to remain popular, the intellectual property it’s based on has to as well. Some franchises linger in the public consciousness for decades; others, even some really popular ones, might fade into obscurity. (Or a company might wish a franchise would fade into obscurity for a variety of reasons.) If you’re a theme park and you have a big roller coaster based on one of the obscure (or controversial) ones, well, you might have a problem on your hands.

For example, Universal Studios Orlando recently announced they were closing a whole batch of attractions in their park, including a Woody Woodpecker roller coaster, a Shrek & Donkey meet and greet, and a playground called Fievel’s Playland, based on the animated movie An American Tail.

An American Tail was a fairly large box-office hit in 1986 (although its sequel, Fievel Goes West, was not just a few years later). So it wasn’t a left-field choice for a themed playground when it opened at Universal Studios in the early ’90s. But that was 30 years ago, and American Tail hasn’t done much since then; just a handful of video games and a couple direct-to-video sequels. It’s kind of astonishing that playground remained open this long.

But while Fievel’s Playland might not be long for this world, there are quite a few other theme park attractions based on movies that are as old (or much older) that are still going strong. Here now, a tribute to these rides and their baffling longevity.

      Mr Toad’s Wild Ride

      First Opened: 1955

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is one of a handful of opening day Disneyland attractions that remain in operation some 67 years later. Most of the others that are still around are connected to major Disney properties like Peter PanSnow White, and Alice in Wonderland. Mr. Toad, originally of the children’s book The Wind in the Willows, only appeared in one of Disney’s lesser-known anthology films, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Plus, the ride itself harbors some surprisingly adult content for the supposedly family-friendly Disney company; guests are taken via old timey car on a wild joy ride that ends with a head-on collision with a train and a trip to a literal hell. While Florida’s version closed in 1998, California’s Wild Ride keeps on sending tourists to hell hour after hour, day after day.

      Casey Jr. Circus Train

      First Opened: 1955

This original Disneyland attraction is a train ride for children inspired by the company’s animated classic Dumbo. It is sweet and quaint and certainly speaks to Walt Disney’s personal love of trains. But Disneyland already has another (far more famous) Dumbo ride; the one where guests get to take a “flight” with the character. As such, it’s shocking that Disney hasn’t tried to repurpose the space occupied by this secondary attraction in all the years since.

    • 3

      Earthquake

      First Opened: 1989

The Earthquake attraction was first introduced as part of the Universal Studios tram tour in 1989, some 15 years after Universal’s Earthquake film starring Charlton Heston opened in theaters. It made a fine showcase for practical special effects of the time, and it got its own standalone ride when Universal Studios Florida opened in Orlando in 1990. As practical special effects became less and less relevant to moviemaking (and the Universal theme parks), the Earthquake ride closed in 2015 to make room for a Fast & Furious ride. But the old school Earthquake stop on the Universal tram tour in Hollywood is still around, rumbling guests who probably have never seen 1974’s Earthquake and maybe don’t even know it exists.

    • 4

      E.T. Adventure

      First Opened: 1990

Not far from Fievel’s Playland stands one of the few opening day attractions at Universal Studios Florida still in operation: E.T. Adventure, based on the beloved Steven Spielberg movie. The attraction is a riff on the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland; guests board “flying” bicycles and then take a bizarre trip to E.T.’s psychedelic home world, the “Green Planet.” Although the ride has been refurbished through the years, its animatronic effects are no longer cutting edge, and E.T. isn’t quite the cultural touchstone it was in the late 1980s. But when Universal announced the closure of Fievel’s Playland and all those other attractions, E.T. Adventure was spared from the wrecking ball.

    • 5

      The Blues Brothers Show

      First Opened: 1991

Do kids today even know the Blues Brothers? Mine certainly don’t, and when I tried to show them the original movie — one of my personal favorites, I should note — they were amused by the music and car chases, and utterly baffled by the comedy and the film’s absurd length. The last Blues Brothers movie, the mega-flop Blues Brothers 2000, opened more than 20 years ago. Yet Jake and Elwood Blues still regularly roam through the streets of Universal Studios Florida, putting on (surprisingly entertaining) performances of their classic blues and soul hits.

    • 6

      Gadget’s Go Coaster

      First Opened: 1993

Perhaps the single most obscure attraction in all of Disneyland is this children’s roller coaster inspired by one of the supporting characters on the ’90s animated series Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. The Disneyland version of the ride is currently closed while the park redesigns the area around it, and it will supposedly be altered when it reopens. But the old school Go Coaster is still up and running at Tokyo Disneyland if you ever feel the need to visit.

      Hurler

      First Opened: 1994

For a dozen years in the ’90s and 2000s, Paramount owned the Carowinds amusement park in North Carolina, and during that period they installed several rides inspired by Paramount movies — including a roller coaster called the Hurler taken loosely from Wayne’s World (where the characters occasionally make jokes about needing to hurl). When Paramount sold its theme park division, all the references to Paramount movies were removed, and most of the rides’ names were changed. But the Hurler remained the Hurler, and if you look around the attraction, you’ll still see a few faded references to the SNL-inspired film.

Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular

      First Opened: 1995

The Waterworld stunt show has to be one of the most improbable success stories in theme park history. The movie it’s based on was a notorious bomb, and is mostly only remembered for being the most expensive Hollywood production ever made to that point in history. And within a few years, the stunts and effects on display in Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular had very little in common with modern blockbusters, whose pyrotechnic visuals are now mostly created by computers. And yet the Waterworld show remains extremely popular with Universal Studios guests all over the world. Not only is original version still open almost 30 years later, but Universal keeps building new versions of the show at parks around the world. The latest, at Universal Studios Beijing, debuted just last year.

      Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls

      First Opened: 1999

Dudley Do-Right was already a bit of a relic when Universal added a log flume ride inspired by the character to its Islands of Adventure, although he did appear in a live-action movie starring Brendan Fraser that same year. The movie was a huge flop, though, and the character hasn’t done much since. Nevertheless, Ripsaw Falls remains in business. Its enduring popularity despite its somewhat dated theming, is probably due to the fact that it is an extremely fun ride.

      U-571

      First Opened: 2006

Do you remember the 2000 movie U-571? No? You don’t recall U-571-mania sweeping the globe in the spring of 2000? Okay, me neither. The film, a submarine thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, was a modest hit in theaters but left little impact on broader pop culture. For some reason, Movieland Park in Italy opened an attraction based on the film in 2006. 15 years later, it’s still there. Go figure.

‘28 Months Later’ Might Finally Happen

    [ad_1]

28 Days Later… completely reshaped the world’s conception of what zombies could be. Now we might be able to return to that universe with a complete trilogy. The film and its sequel are well-known for shocking kills, tense relationships, and of course, popularizing the terrifying “fast zombie” rather than the more common shambling variety. While it was only made on a budget of $8 million dollars, it quickly grossed much more than that. It managed to pull in $82.7 million globally and cemented itself as a staple of 2000s horror in the process.

The sequel, 28 Weeks Later, didn’t quite bring in the same profit as its predecessor, but it also managed to draw positive reviews. Now, it seems that 28 Days Later… director Danny Boyle is considering the possibility of a third film.

Boyle spoke with NME recently, and when asked about a potential third entry, he shared the following:

I’d be very tempted. It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?

Boyle added that the film could happen because of the current struggles at movie theaters that are trying to get audiences to return after the pandemic. “It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel,” Boyle explained. “But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.”

As of now, there are no concrete plans for the film. That being said, the interest is surely there, from the director and audience alike.

  • ‘Terrifer 2’ Submitted For Oscar Consideration

‘Terrifer 2’ Submitted For Oscar Consideration

    [ad_1]

Art The Clown has been stacking up bodies in his second (technically third) outing, and soon, he could be stacking awards as well. That’s right, Terrifier 2 of all films has been submitted to the Academy for Oscar consideration. Of course, horror films aren’t particularly favored by the Hollywood establishment, and especially not this kind of horror. A few horror films have won before. There are even some who managed to pick up Best Picture. That being said, it’s not very likely Terrifier 2 will be among those.

Terrifier 2 is the second film in the Terrifier franchise, which spawned from a section of the anthology film All Hallows Eve. The film follows the bloody rampages of Art The Clown, a mysterious and voracious murderer. The first film was notable for its particularly gruesome kills, and the second is no different. The much-reviled “bathroom scene” has gotten a decent amount of buzz — some audience members are supposedly puking right in the theater.

Terrifier 2 has somehow managed to get a pretty wide release, raking in roughly $8 million dollars so far at the box office. The film was initially planned to appear in just one theater for a single weekend before moving to streaming services, but somehow, the fans made their voices heard. For such an extreme film, Terrifier 2 is certainly making some huge strides and doing exactly what its namesake implies.

    Here is the film’s trailer:

So far Terrifier 2 has grossed $7.9 million in theaters. That may not sound like a lot, but when your film only cost $250,000, that’s a pretty good number before you consider the additional revenues the movie can make on home video, streaming, and by selling extremely horrifying merchandise.

  • Henry Selick Says It’s ‘A Little Unfair’ People Assume Tim Burton Directed ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’

Henry Selick Says It’s ‘A Little Unfair’ People Assume Tim Burton Directed ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’

    [ad_1]

The posters for the movie all read Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before ChristmasBut officially, technically, and any way you slice it, Tim Burton did not direct the film. The director of Nightmare Before Christmas is Henry Selick, the stop-motion animator who also made James and the Giant Peach and Coraline. Burton created the story and designed the characters, but he didn’t direct the actual film.

Still, because of the possessive title on the poster, most people just assume that Burton directed Nightmare — something that Selick himself called “a bit unfair” in a recent interview with The A.V. Club for his new movie, Wendell & Wild. As Selick put it, the whole titling of the film, and the confusion that followed…

…was a little unfair because it wasn’t called Tim Burton’s Nightmare until three weeks before the film came out. And I would have been fine with that, if that’s what I signed up for. But Tim was in L.A. making two features while I directed that film, and I mean, Tim is a genius—or he certainly was in his most creative years. I always thought his story was perfect, and he designed the main characters. But it was really me and my team of people who brought that to life.

Do you detect any shade in the phrase “he certainly was in his most creative years”? Maybe a smidge?

    The Nightmare Before Christmas
    Walt Disney Pictures

If I was Selick, I’d be a bit perturbed too. He directed one of the most beloved movies of the 1990s, and I would guess if we asked 100 people on the street who directed it, at least 90 would say Tim Burton. That’s not to say Burton wasn’t hugely important to the making of the movie — he was. But Selick was as well.

Selick’s new movie, Wendell & Wild, is now streaming on Netflix. Once again, Selick has teamed with a dynamic director: Jordan Peele. But while Peele and Selick co-wrote the film together, Selick is yet again the sole credited director. But this one’s not titled Jordan Peele’s Wendell & Wild.

  • The Russos Aren’t Working With Marvel Again Anytime Soon

The Russos Aren’t Working With Marvel Again Anytime Soon

    [ad_1]

After Kevin Feige and maybe Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr., the key creative figures in the first dozen years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed more MCU movies than anyone else (4), including three of the most consequential in the entire saga: Captain America: Civil WarAvengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. From 2013 to 2019, they basically never stopped working on something for Marvel.

That time is over. And while the Russos have previously said they would welcome a Marvel return — and even hinted at possibly making another Avengers movie down the line — they are now giving a very different answer to questions regarding when they will direct another MCU project. As part of a large profile in Variety, Joe Russo stated plainly “we won’t be ready to do anything with Marvel until the end of the decade.”

That’s because the Russos are now working on their own projects through their production company, AGBO. They’ve already released three films, all with various Marvel alums: Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth, Cherry starring Tom Holland, and The Grey Man starring Chris Evans. They’re also producing a sequel to Extraction and an assortment of other projects, including a sci-fi film titled The Electric State starring yet another Marvel actor, Chris Pratt.

The Russos told Variety that part of their interest in creating their own company was the struggle to develop material that they found interesting beyond the control of the big studios…

‘We had done deals with studios for years, but we were constantly calling our agents a year later and saying, ‘Get us out of this deal and do another,’ Joe says. ‘Because what happens is you’re stuck with whatever material that studio collected.’ ‘And you’re also subject to their whims,’ Anthony adds.

If they’re true to their word, the Russos wouldn’t be back at Marvel for at least another eight years. That is well beyond the timeline of any projects Marvel has officially announced. (The furthest out, Avengers: Secret Wars, is supposed to open in theaters in the spring of 2026.) So it’s almost impossible to speculate what sorts of films they might even potentially work on, or what the MCU would look like at that point. It’s probably best not to even think about it again for, oh I don’t know, at least five years.

The next MCU movie, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, opens in theaters on November 11.

‘Peter Pan’ Is Getting His First Horror Movie

    [ad_1]

If you want to see just how valuable a great high concept is, take a look at the low-budget horror film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and HoneyIt was made on a shoestring, but it’s garnered enormous attention online thanks to its eye-catching premise: A dark retelling of the classic Winnie-the-Pooh stories (which, fortunate for the movie, are now in the public domain) as a scary movie, with a grown Christopher Robin returning to the Hundred Acre Wood to find a Pooh who has taken being abandoned by his childhood friend very badly.

After trailers for the movie racked up millions of views online, the little film from director Rhys Frake-Waterfield is getting released in theaters around the world. Fathom Events will show the film in U.S. multiplexes on February 15, while other countries will get even more expansive theatrical releases.

And that’s not all, now that he’s stumbled on this bankable concept of horror-izing childhood favorites, Frake-Waterfield is working on making more of them. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s at work on a sequel to Blood and Honey as well as a second “twisted take on a children’s tale with Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare.

If you haven’t seen the Blood and Honey trailer yet, well, you’re missing out. Here it is:

There are a seemingly endless number of these beloved childhood icons whose original works are slipping out of copyright (or could be parodied in a different enough way that you could probably get away with spoofing them in a horror context). If Blood and Honey’s release goes well, we could be in for many, many more movies like it.

  • ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Announces Streaming Premiere Date

‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Announces Streaming Premiere Date

    [ad_1]

Don’t Worry Darling generated more headlines than just about any movie this year. Admittedly, those headlines were not always positive. Some were about rumored relationships between members of the cast and crew; others involved allegations of spitting at lavish movie premieres. When people are debating whether your stars spit on each other, that’s maybe not a great sign about a film’s buzz.

All those articles didn’t add up to much box office; the film wound up grossing about $44 million in the U.S. against a reported budget of $35 million. So odds are a lot of people have been waiting for the film to come to streaming before checking it out. They’ll get their chance in a matter of days as the movie is about to premiere on HBO Max later this month.

The sophomore directorial effort from Olivia Wilde, the movie is a twisty thriller set in a seemingly idyllic desert community named Victory where Alice (Florence Pugh) lives the life of a happy homemaker with her perfect, handsome, hard-working husband Jack (Harry Styles). But soon cracks begin to emerge in the superficial perfection of Victory. After attempting to rescue the survivors of a plane crash just outside of town, Alice begins experiencing strange visions and dreams. Neighbors start turning up dead. What the heck is going on in Victory?

Obviously we’re not going to spoil it here (although if you have questions we do have plenty of answers here). If you want to see what happens to Alice for yourself, Don’t Worry Darling will be streaming on HBO Max starting on November 7 — next Monday. We here at ScreenCrush weren’t huge fans of the movie; in our review we wrote

Don’t Worry Darling isn’t even the sort of mystery you can think and talk about after it’s over, because none of it holds up to even the slightest bit of scrutiny. Like Victory itself, there isn‘t much there there once you get past its glamorous exterior.

But hey, if you’re already an HBO Max subscriber, you don’t have to pay anything extra to check out the film. You might want to give it a try.

  • ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Trailer Takes Us Back to Pandora

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Trailer Takes Us Back to Pandora

    [ad_1]

Cast your mind back into the distant year of 2009. It was a very different time. And it was the year that James Cameron first sent us to Pandora, the Day-Glo lit planet of Avatar, where enormous aliens called the Na’vi roamed, and venal humans from Earth started a war in order to procure a precious mineral known as unobtanium.

A lot of folks claim not to remember Avatar, but it became (and still is) the biggest boxi-office hit in the history of motion pictures. So even though it’s been 13 years, I’m going to guess a whole lot of people  will show up for Avatar: The Way of Water when it debuts in theaters this Christmas season. Cameron is back as writer director, along with much of the original cast. More importantly, The Way of Water has got loads of wild Pandora sights and all-new kooky alien creatures. The new trailer just makes it look like a big dang spectacle. And that sort of stuff always plays. Take a look:

There’s several new stills from the film as well…

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

With “Avatar: The Way of Water,”  the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to open in theaters on December 16. The film is intended as the first of four Avatar sequels Cameron intends to make over the next few years.

  • Henry Cavill Wants to Make a More Upbeat ‘Superman’

Henry Cavill Wants to Make a More Upbeat ‘Superman’

    [ad_1]

DC has a reputation for making gritty movies. While it works sometimes, Henry Cavill says when he makes his big return as Superman in an upcoming movie, he is looking forward to a more hopeful version of the character. Cavill previously appeared in director Zack Snyder’s DC films, which tended to take Superman into the shadows. There are definitely arcs within the comics that see Superman in that kind of light, but they’re not really the truest to the character.

Superman has long been considered a boy scout. He’s your prototypical superhero, stopping runaway trains, and rescuing damsels in distress, all with a smile and a wave. After a while, writers got bored of that whole schtick and started asking questions. What’s left for the man who has everything? What are the limits of corruption for an infinitely powerful being? These questions gave rise to an unstoppable, darker Superman, who would frequently be at odds with other heroes and villains alike.

Henry Cavill recently sat down with ScreenRant to talk about his take on Superman. The interview was about Enola Holmes 2, but since Superman appears in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, questions were bound to arise. Cavill said:

Obviously, I have a very close connection to the character. And there is something extraordinarily special about him; extraordinarily special about his capacity to give and to love. I don’t mean romantically; I mean his love for Earth and for the people who live here, and to make people feel powerful—to make people feel like Superman themselves. I have plenty of desires for this, of course, which will be discussed more in time. But the most important thing, which I will be aiming for, is for the audience to leave the cinema and to feel like they can fly, to feel like they can protect, and to feel like they want to give to everyone else. That would be my goal.

Black Adam is now playing in theaters. Enola Holmes 2 debuts on Netflix on November 4. Warner Bros. has yet to announce when or where Cavill’s Superman may appear next.
