  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania’ Easter Eggs: The Coolest Marvel References

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania’ Easter Eggs: The Coolest Marvel References

The following post contains SPOILERS for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Proceed with caution or be banished forever to the tiny universe known as the Quantum Realm.

I am trying to imagine a world where someone walks into Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania totally cold, having never read a Marvel comic or watched a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. They would be utterly, totally, completely baffled. Somewhere out there in the multiverse, there must be a place where such a person exists. I feel bad for them.

Even Marvel veterans who have kept up with 15 years of MCU movies and TV shows and know their comic-book lore might be a little lost at times during Quantumania. This third Ant-Man movie is as much of a sequel to Avengers: Endgame and the Loki TV series as it is two the prior Ant-Man films. It continues the adventures of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and introduces the world to Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), a Marvel villain with an impossibly complicated backstory who is set to become the Avengers’ next major adversary through Phase 5 and 6 of the MCU, including the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty film that’s due in theaters in 2025.

Quantumania not only references Kang’s comic book past, it also contains a ton of obscure references and hidden details from throughout the Ant-Man franchise and the rest of the MCU. If you missed any of them, here are 15 of the film’s coolest Easter eggs:

    The Coolest Quantumania Easter Eggs

There are some really obscure comic and movie references in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — here are the best ones.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is in theaters now. Did you spot an Easter egg we missed? Let us know on Twitter or Facebook, or on our YouTube page. The next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, opens in theaters on May 5.

  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Post-Credits Scene: Who Are Those Characters?

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Post-Credits Scene: Who Are Those Characters?

The following post contains SPOILERS for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

“If you think I’m evil, well, just wait till you meet my Variants…”

Marvel’s Loki ended with that ominous line from Jonathan Majors’ He Who Remains, the mysterious head of the Time Variance Authority. This lonely, eccentric, seemingly all-powerful man who lived in a citadel at the end of time explained to Loki and his variant Sylvie that he was a scientist from the 31st century who discovered the existence of alternate realities. Each one of these divergent universes had their own scientist from the 31st century, and many of them were hellbent on conquest. These various conquerors started a multiversal war, which He Who Remains ultimately won.

To prevent future wars and variants, he (who remains) then created the “sacred timeline,” a singular universe protected and patrolled by the TVA to ensure that no new variants arose. When He Who Remains is found at the end of Loki he warns that killing him will spark the return of the multiverse, and the return of more versions of him — even more evil variants of the man known to comic fans as Kang.

He Who Remains’ promise came true in the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania post-credits scene. The rest of the movie has focused on just one Kang (also played by Majors), who was exiled to the microscopic universe known as the Quantum Realm by his variants. Over the course of Quantumania, this Kang reveals a few key details of his backstory: His variants from throughout the multiverse have banded together, and in doing so have imperiled all of reality. Only he can stop them — but at the end of the film Ant-Man and the Wasp defeat Kang. Which means the other Kangs are coming.

And then they show up — hundreds and hundreds of them — in the post-credits scene.

This “Council of Kangs” (or sometimes referred to in comics as the “Cross-Time Kangs”) comes straight out of Avengers comics; the image above drawn by Marvel great John Buscema originally appeared in June 1988’s The Avengers #292. In Marvel’s comics, as in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, time travel does not rewrite history the way it does in, say, Back to the Future Part II, where the Biff of the future gives his younger self the Grays Sports Almanac, which leads to an alternate present where Biff rules over Hill Valley as a casino magnate.

Instead, when you alter the past of the Marvel Universe, you create an entirely new divergent timeline. The old timeline still exists and continues on its path, while a new timeline is created based upon the change. And because Kang the Conqueror has been traveling through time for a long time (sorry), he’s created many alternate realities — each with its own variant of the original Kang. (In the scene we see Kangs who look like Jonathan Majors, and even a few that look radically different, including one that appears to be an alien Kang.) And eventually these multitudinous Kangs decide to work together. And that’s the group we see during Quantumania’s closing credits.

But this sequence also shows us a trio of additional Kang variants separate from the Council of Kangs, making plans in some kind of separate antechamber. (Comics villains love a good antechamber; that’s where all the evil schemes are hatched.) These three variants, all played by Jonathan Majors, are clearly more important than the rest. Two of them are immediately recognizable from Marvel Comics; the third is a bit of an ongoing mystery.

The first of the three is dressed in the style of an Egyptian pharaoh. This Kang variant is known as Rama-Tut and he is actually the very first version of Kang that showed up in Marvel Comics. In 1963’s Fantastic Four #19, the FF travel back to the past, and battle a despotic dictator named Rama-Tut, a fugitive from the far future who had traveled back in time and conquered ancient Egypt. By the end of the issue, the Fantastic Four defeated Rama-Tut and send him back [Christopher Lloyd voice] to the future.

When Kang the Conqueror debuted the following fall in the pages of The Avengers #8 that story retconned the two characters as the same man at different points in his life. This second story revealed that Kang was born in a utopian future in the 31st century, where everything was beautiful, perfect, and boring. Kang found a time machine and used it to go back to ancient Egypt and become Rama-Tat. On his way back to his own time, his time machine malfunctioned and sent him even farther into the future. Now he was in the 41st century, which was the opposite of the future where he was born; this Earth was ravaged by an apocalyptic war. Rama-Tut settled in to his new home, conquered the whole place, and took the name Kang.

In later comics, Kang would become Rama-Tut again, but for the purposes of Quantumania and the MCU, that’s irrelevant. All you need to know right now is the Kang variant in the pharaoh outfit is a guy who ruled over ancient Egypt.

The second of these Kang variants looks much older than the other two and wears a very elaborate hat. That’s Immortus, yet another version of Kang who has alternately helped and hounded different versions of the Avengers through the years. He debuted just two issues after Kang in The Avengers #10. Initially, he was treated as a totally separate character; another bad guy who could control time. Rather than fight the heroes with technology from the future (which was Kang’s gimmick), he would pluck figures out of the past to fight for him. So Immortus could send Billy the Kid or Genghis Khan or whoever he felt like to battle Captain America or Iron Man.

Later stories revealed Immortus was in fact another version of Kang. His transformation into Immortus is extremely complicated, spread out across decades of stories, and includes multiple retcons, but here is the basic gist: After Kang spends untold ages conquering and fighting, he eventually comes to see the futility of his actions. As an older man, he grows more thoughtful and if not more benevolent, then at least a little less aggressive in his actions. This variant ditches his Kang identity and adopts the name “Immortus.”

In some stories, Immortus seems to be actively aiding the Avengers. In others, he’s even more dangerous than Kang. In a couple, Kang and Immortus actually fight each other. Essentially, Immortus has been traveling through time so long and seen so much stuff, that he has elaborate (and often inscrutable) grand plans for the timeline that only he knows (and sometimes only he understands). Whether helping or harming the Avengers, it’s always to suit his own ends.

And then there’s Quantumania’s third Kang variant (still played by Majors) who wears silver armor and appears to be younger than the other two. He’s … to be perfectly honest, I don’t know what variant of Kang this is supposed to be. In terms of who that could be, there are really only two other significant Kang variants from the comics. The first is named Scarlet Centurion, yet another double of Kang (or, sometimes, Kang’s son) who enjoys traveling through time and messing with the Avengers. The other is Iron Lad, and is a younger version of Kang from before he became Rama-Tut. This variant decides he wants to be a hero, rather than a conqueror, and travels back in time to the present day Marvel Universe to start his own team of Avengers.

(I know, this is really confusing.)

The third Kang variant in Quantumania’s post-credits could be either one of those guys — but he doesn’t really look like either of them. As the name Scarlet Centurion suggests, the character always dresses in red; this variant is in silver. And he’s young like Iron Lad is in the comics, but as his name suggests, Iron Lad’s armor looks like Iron Man, and this variant’s armor does not. So whoever he is, Marvel’s keeping his identity a mystery for now.

These three Kangs agree that the heroes of Quantumania (and, by extension I suppose, the Avengers) need to be stopped from meddling with the Kangs’ plans for the multiverse. Precisely what those plans might be aren’t really made clear — all we known is the Kangs will be back, and that they intend to start their own dynasty throughout the multiverse. One that could potentially lead to another multiversal war — perhaps even a secret one.

  • Bruce Willis Diagnosed With Dementia

    Bruce Willis Diagnosed With Dementia

When Bruce Willis stepped away from acting last March, his family said that the reason for his early retirement was that he had been “experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities.” Today, his family released a statement about Willis’ health, and unfortunately it is not a positive one.

“Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022,” it reads, “Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, FTD is a disorder “caused by progressive nerve cell loss in the brain’s frontal lobes (the areas behind your forehead) or its temporal lobes (the regions behind your ears)” which leads to “loss of function in these brain regions, which variably cause deterioration in behavior, personality and/or difficulty with producing or comprehending language.”

Per the Willis family’s statement, “FTD is the most common form of dementia, and because getting the diagnosis can take years, FTD is likely much more prevalent than we know.” They also note that as of today, “there are no treatments for the disease.”

Willis is one of the biggest movie and TV stars of his generation, known for playing John McClane in the Die Hard franchise, David Addison on Moonlighting, and for starring in films like The Sixth Sense12 MonkeysPulp FictionArmageddon, and many more.

The statement concludes “Bruce has always found joy in life – and has helped everyone he knows to do the same. It has meant the world to see that sense of care echoed back to him and to all of us. We have been so moved by the love you have all shared for our dear husband, father, and friend during this difficult time. Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible.”

  • Raquel Welch, ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Star, Dies at 82

Raquel Welch, ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Star, Dies at 82

One of the 1960s signature screen stars has died. Raquel Welch passed away on Wednesday morning. Her death was confirmed by family members who told TMZ she died following a “brief illness.” Welch was 82 years old.

Welch’s breakthrough as a movie star came in 1966, when she appeared in the sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the film followed a team of scientists and military officers as they shrink down and enter the body of an injured man via tiny submarine in order to repair his damaged brain.

That same year, Welch cemented her newfound celebrity in One Million Years B.C., a caveman adventure picture. Welch spoke only a handful of lines in the film (she was a cavewoman, after all), but her unique costume — essentially just a fur bikini — made her an instant sex symbol of the era. The poster of Welch in her One Million Years B.C. look became one of the most popular of its time.

Welch remained busy all through the late 1960s and into the 1970s. Her most notable productions include the original version of Bedazzled, the western 100 Rifles, the murder mystery The Last of Sheila, and the provocative adaptation Myra Breckinridge, based on the novel by Gore Vidal. Playing the title role, Welch proved herself a bold risk taker, appearing in a film that tackled controversial subject matter.

Welch stayed busy all through the 1980s and into the ’90s, doing more and more TV work, and appearing numerous times on Broadway. She also had a memorable guest spot on Seinfeld, playing a fictional (and surprisingly aggressive) version of herself in the Season 8 episode “The Summer of George.”

Welch was a Golden Globe winner for her work in 1973’s The Three Musketeers, and she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. And those signature performances in Fantastic Voyage and One Million Years B.C. — and some of her iconic screen images — will be remembered for a very long time.

She gets her chance when the evil sea witch Ursula offers to make her a deal to turn her into a human. In live-action form, Ursula will be played by Melissa McCarthy.

Thus far we haven’t gotten a good look at McCarthy’s version of the character, but she makes a brief appearance at the end of the film’s new trailer, which also showcases Bailey singing her rendition of the film’s signature song, “Part of Your World.” It also gives us our first look at more mermaids, plus Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, the human prince who falls for Ariel once she makes her way to dry land.

    Watch the trailer below:

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. • Marvel Reveals Full Details of Harrison Ford’s Upcoming Role

Marvel Reveals Full Details of Harrison Ford’s Upcoming Role

When Marvel announced that Harrison Ford would be replacing the late William Hurt as General Thunderbolt Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it turns out that wasn’t entirely accurate. Yes, Ford is going to appear as Ross in the next Captain America film, Captain America: New World Order.

    But Ross isn’t a general anymore…

Instead, he is now the President of the United States in the MCU. That’s according to Kevin Feige, who told Entertainment Weekly that we can expect Ford to have a major role in New World Order. As he put it…

..[Ford]’s embracing this role. He’s tireless with the amount of work that he does. This is certainly a big part for Thaddeus Ross. He’s the president of the United States in the film. And with Harrison, you think about Air Force One, and you think about some of his confrontations with the president in Clear and Present Danger. There’s a dynamic between President Ross and Sam Wilson. They have a history together, but in this film, we’ll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the president of the United States in a way that is just incredible.

Ford recently explained why he decided to join the MCU in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying “I thought, ‘Everybody else seems to be having a great time.’ I watch all these terrific actors having a good time [in Marvel movies]. I like doing something different to what I’ve ever done and pleasing people with it. So I’ll try a piece of that.”

Captain America: New World Order is scheduled to open in theaters on May 3, 2024. Julius Onah is directing the film, from a script by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson.

  • Marvel Confirms ‘Spider-Man 4’ Is Happening

Marvel Confirms ‘Spider-Man 4’ Is Happening

Kevin Feige is a man who knows how to keep a secret. He seems like the sort of dude who would go to the doctor when he wasn’t feeling well but then not tell him what is wrong. “I have a headache. And that’s all I’m willing to say right now.”

But in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Feige revealed some new details about Marvel’s plans for Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He revealed that Harrison Ford isn‘t just playing General Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: New World Order — he’s now President Thunderbolt Ross. He revealed Bucky will be the leader of the Thunderbolts in their upcoming movie. And he also said the arrival of the Fantastic Four is a huge moment for the MCU, and will be “a big pillar” of the universe moving forward.

But perhaps most importantly, he confirmed that a fourth Spider-Man movie is in development, following the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Asked when we might see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in another Marvel production, Feige said:

All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.

No Way Home concluded on a note that either set the stage for a whole new phase of Spider-Man stories, or perhaps sent the character off, never to be heard from again. Marvel shares the movie rights for the character with Sony, and so his involvement in the MCU is always tenuous and subject to change. So far, though, Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man partnership has produced some of the best Spider-Man movies ever — not to mention the most financially successful ones — so it’s not shocking that both sides would want to continue that relationship.

The next Marvel movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, opens in theaters this weekend.

“There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. To see if they could work together when we needed them to. To fight the battles that we never could.”

That’s Nick Fury talking about the Avengers. But he could also be talking about the movie The Avengers and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After 15 years and dozens of movies, look at what became of this idea; bringing together all these remarkable people and seeing that, yes, they could be something more when they worked together, when their films were interwoven together until a giant meta-narrative. 15 years ago, the whole notion seemed crazy. An Iron Man movie? Who cares about Iron Man? Starring Robert Downey Jr.? Didn’t he have a drug problem? And then they’re going to make an Ant-Man movie? It’ll never work.

And yet here we sit more than a decade later and we can say, quite conclusively that it worked. Iron Man begat a sequel, plus The Incredible HulkThorCaptain America, and The Avengers. Then six more movies. Then seven more after that. (Ant-Man showed up eventually, but it took a little while.) 14 years later, we’re at the start of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. What better time than now to rank them all?

After watching Quantumania and rewatching the previous MCU movies, I have arrived at this guaranteed to be in-no-way controversial ranking, from the worst film Marvel has made so far (you know what it is) to the best. ‘The Flash’ Trailer: All the Easter Eggs You Missed

This summer’s big DC movie is called The Flash, but really it seems to be based on Flashpoint, a hugely important DC comic which saw the Flash travel back in time to save his mom and then accidentally change the entire DC Universe in the process. The changes included some familiar Justice League characters being wiped out of existence and others being radically changed — like Batman, who turned out to be Thomas Wayne instead of Bruce Wayne, because in this altered timeline, the mugger had killed Bruce instead of his parents.

While not all of these events line up to what we see in The Flash trailer, a lot of them do — like using an older version of Michael Keaton’s Batman in basically the same role that Thomas Wayne served in Flashpoint. But that’s just one of the many Easter eggs and little details you might have missed in this very cool Flash trailer. They include which Batsuits we see in the Batcave, which scenes are flashbacks, exactly what universe the movie is set in, and we’ll also give you a wild theory about who the secret villain of the film really is. ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Is Almost Three Hours Long

John Wick fans are about to get more of their hero than ever before.

The runtime of the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 is reportedly almost three hours long. At a whopping two hours and 49 minutes with credits, the movie is the longest in the saga of the vengeful hitman so far.

The first John Wick, which introduced Keanu Reeves as a man who had left his life of extremely stylish killings behind only to seek revenge after a group of mercenaries break into his home and murder his puppy (his adorable puppy!), was a taut 101 minutes. The sequel was 122 minutes. The third, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum was 131 minutes. According to ColliderChapter 4 runs 169 minutes. So this one is not only the longest John Wick, it’s the longest by over half an hour.

The new film once again stars Keanu Reeves as John Wick, in addition to franchise stalwarts like Laurence Fishburne (The Bowery King), Ian McShane (Winston), and Lance Reddick (Charon). New additions to the cast include Donnie Yen as a rival assassin, Bill Skarsgard as a member of the High Table, and Scott Adkins playing another dude who will probably do some really cool action stuff in the film.

Here is John Wick: Chapter 4’s official synopsis:

John Wick (Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating the High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.

  • Why Doesn’t Jim Carrey’s Riddler Have Eyebrows?

Why Doesn’t Jim Carrey’s Riddler Have Eyebrows?

Joel Schumacher’s Batman movies are famous for their unique sartorial choices; nipples on the Batsuit, pronounced codpieces, and so on. Perhaps their general ostentatiousness obscured what has to be one of the strangest — yet least observed — costuming choices in any Batman film: Jim Carrey’s eyebrows in Batman Forever.

Or rather his lack of lack of eyebrows.

This whole situation defies explanation so images will be required. First, here is Carrey in his introductory scene as Edward Nygma, a quirky and ambitious scientist at Wayne Enterprises who has invented a new kind of hyperrealistic television. As you can see, Nygma is a bit disheveled, but he nonetheless possesses a normal human face with normal human eyebrows.

Bruce Wayne (Val Kilmer) finds disturbing implications in Nygma’s technology — as well he should. It turns out Nygma’s “Box” can transfer the viewer’s brain power to its creator, enhancing his intellect and giving him the uncontrollable urge to talk like Ace Ventura. When Bruce Wayne rebuffs Nygma’s pitch to roll out this “Box” throughout Gotham City, the inventor quits and plots revenge. After witnessing Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face in action, Nygma decides to become a costumed criminal himself. Eventually, he picks the name “The Riddler,” with a green and black ensemble covered in question marks.

Nygma debuts his new alter ego by crashing a dinner party at Two-Face’s lair. When he shows up, he looks like this:

Notice anything strange about Carrey’s look as the Riddler? Here’s another angle:

In the span of a scene, Jim Carrey’s eyebrows have vanished. Edward Nygma has eyebrows. But for some reason, the Riddler does not.

My first thought was “Huh, that’s weird, Jim Carrey’s Riddler has no eyebrows. Why would he shave his eyebrows to become the Riddler?” But here’s the thing: Jim Carrey did not shave his eyebrows to become the Riddler. A few scenes after his transformation into the Riddler, Nygma hosts a lavish black-tie affair. And in that scene — and in every subsequent scene where Carrey plays Edward Nygma —he has eyebrows.

    Look, there they are again.

Then a couple minutes later, when Nygma puts his Riddler costume on again, his eyebrows vanish.

This is the Riddler’s ultimate riddle: Why does he have no eyebrows?

I looked around and couldn’t find a suitable explanation. The closest the late Joel Schumacher comes to explaining it on the Batman Forever DVD commentary is in the first scene between Riddler and Two-Face. Here’s how he describes Carrey’s look as the Riddler:

Jim’s makeup, believe it or not, was harder to do than Tommy’s. Because there’s an attempt here to make his face almost perfect, like a doll. And that takes a lot of time, because it’s subtler than doing the prosthetic on Tommy’s face.

I have two daughters, so I live in a house full of dolls. And all of their dolls — every Barbie, every LOL, every baby — has eyebrows. And who thinks of a “perfect” face as one with no eyebrows? Well, Joel Schumacher, I guess.

Whatever the reason Schumacher equated no eyebrows with the “perfect” look he wanted for the Riddler, he decided to give Carrey a prosthetic to cover his real brows. In fact, a few years ago makeup artist Rick Baker auctioned off many of his famous works — and the items up for bid included not only the masks he made for Carrey to wear in Batman Forever, but the eyebrow covers as well. One set sold for a whopping $632.

    Propstore.com
    Propstore.com

Admittedly, there is a certain amount of suspension of disbelief that goes into every superhero movie costume. Michael Keaton’s Batman always wore dark makeup around his eyes under his helmet, yet we never saw him apply it and he never seemed to remove it either. In one infamous moment in Batman Returns, Keaton is very clearly wearing makeup in one shot and then it vanishes in the next when he goes to rip off his mask to reveal his identity to Catwoman.

This is just one of the things an audience is supposed to accept in a superhero film. But once I noticed Riddler’s (lack of) eyebrows, I couldn’t stop staring at them. I became fixated on trying to understand them — if not from the perspective of the filmmakers then at least from the perspective of Edward Nygma. Why would he go to all this trouble?

Nygma’s Riddler already wears a mask and dyes his hair orange; did he think that hiding his eyebrows would obscure his identity more? If he was so worried about people recognizing him, maybe he shouldn’t have talked like a standup comic on speed both in and out of his costume. That’s sort of a dead giveaway. Even Bruce Wayne uses a different voice to talk as Batman.

A few years ago, we learned about a three-hour director’s cut of Batman Forever that Schumacher assembled in the early days of editing the film. This version is described as “much darker in nature” with more focus on the “emotional and psychological issues that led Bruce Wayne to decide to become Batman.” At the time this cut’s existence was revealed, Warner Bros. said they had no plans to ever release it. I only hope some day they change their minds — and that amongst the extended sequences, they include a scene where excessive use of the Box technology makes all the hair fall out of Edward Nygma’s eyebrows. Otherwise, I just don’t get it.

  • The Beasts Rise in New ‘Transformers’ Super Bowl Trailer

The Beasts Rise in New ‘Transformers’ Super Bowl Trailer

Do you remember that old Saturday Night Live sketch for Shimmer? Where the gag was no one could decide whether Shimmer was a floor wax or a dessert toping, and then it turns out it’s both? That’s basically what’s going on in the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Super Bowl ad. Is this a trailer for a movie? Is it a commercial for a car? In fact, it is both. All we’re missing is Chevy Chase to wink at the camera.

That’s because instead of the new “Maximals” — the beastly robots of the title — this trailer focuses on Mirage, one of the Autobots that just so happens to transform into a 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8. And then the whole thing ends with the Porsche logo in the Transformers logo. Ah, synergy.

Wait, Synergy was the computer in Jem and the Holograms, not Transformers. Oh well — watch the new Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Super Bowl spot below:

That’s Anthony Ramos of In the Heights as basically the only non-robot who appears in a meaningful role in this trailer. (Other humans who appear in Rise of the Beasts include Dominique Fishback, Luna Lauren Velez, and Tobe Nwigwe.) Here is the film’s official synopsis:

Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a whole new breed of Transformer – the Maximals – to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is scheduled to open in theaters on June 9, 2023.

  • Indiana Jones Meets His Destiny in New Super Bowl Trailer

Indiana Jones Meets His Destiny in New Super Bowl Trailer

“My memory’s a little fuzzy … are you still a Nazi?”

That’s quite a quintessential Indiana Jones line — especially when it’s followed by Indy socking a dude in the jaw — and it’s the centerpiece of the new Super Bowl trailer for Indiana Jones and the Dial of DestinyThe fifth film in the long-running franchise features Harrison Ford back once again as everyone’s favorite (only?) cinematic archaeologist. And this film appears to be set in at least two different time periods, with uncanny de-aging technology used to turn the 80-year-old Ford into his younger self from around the period when he made the classic Indiana Jones movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. (You will note I did not mention the fourth, not-classic Indiana Jones movie.)

The new trailer is pretty short, so it doesn’t give away much of the story, but it features glimpses of a few scenes we haven’t seen before, including more shots of the young Indiana Jones, which look pretty incredible. Check out the new Super Bowl ad for Dial of Destiny below:

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

Harrison Ford returns as the legendary hero archaeologist in the highly anticipated fifth installment of the iconic “Indiana Jones” franchise, which is directed by James Mangold (“Ford v Ferrari,” “Logan”). Starring along with Ford are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”), John Rhys-Davies (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), Shaunette Renee Wilson (“Black Panther”), Thomas Kretschmann (“Das Boot”), Toby Jones (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Boyd Holbrook (“Logan”), Oliver Richters (“Black Widow”), Ethann Isidore (“Mortel”) and Mads Mikkelsen (“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”). Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has scored each Indy adventure since the original “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981, is once again composing the score.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is scheduled to open in theaters on June 30.

  • Vin Diesel Will Return for Fourth ‘Riddick’ Movie

Vin Diesel Will Return for Fourth ‘Riddick’ Movie

It’s been teased, but now it’s confirmed: Vin Diesel is making another Riddick movie.

This will be the fourth, if you’ve lost count, following Pitch BlackThe Chronicles of Riddick, and Riddick. This latest film is titled Riddick: Furya and it, like each of the previous installments will be directed by David Twohy.

Here was Twohy’s statement on the news:

Our legion fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call-to-action with Riddick: Furya. My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production, and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis.

The last time we heard about the possibility of another Riddick film was back in May, when Diesel revealed some storyboards for the project on his Instagram account. The caption that went with the image read ““Finally got a chance to see some of the new Riddick materials that DT sent over. Wow, exciting is an understatement. FURYA! Happy creative Sunday! All love, Always.”

Diesel’s Richard B. Riddick character debuted as part of the ensemble in the sci-fi horror movie Pitch Black, where his unique eyes — he can see in the dark — gave him an advantage against aliens hunting the survivors of a spaceship crash. His story continued in the epic sci-fi adventure The Chronicles of Riddick. The third film — and my personal favorite — was Riddick, which was more of a stripped-down horror film. Twohy and Diesel have also collaborated on a Riddick animated short as well as two video games.

The new Riddick is being sold at the upcoming EMF in Berlin.

  • ‘Fast X’s New Director Rewrote Most of the Script in Four Days

‘Fast X’s New Director Rewrote Most of the Script in Four Days

By the time Justin Lin had stepped down from directing Fast X the movie had already gone through a long and complicated pre-production process. It was written, it was planned, and shooting had already begun, when Lin suddenly announced he was making the “difficult decision” to quit the movie. Production was paused while Universal searched for a replacement, which ultimately turned out to be The Incredible Hulk and Now You See Me director Louis Leterrier. A short while later, production resumed under Leterrier’s supervision; the completed film comes out in May. (The trailer just debuted.)

But Leterrier didn’t just show up and finish shooting Lin’s script. He told Esquire that he made major changes to the film — primarily to the third act, but also to the rest as well. And he did it all in the handful of days between his first getting brought in to apply for the job and when showed up on set to begin shooting. Here’s how he described the rewrite process:

I read the script four times on the plane, and I said I had some ideas, and they said ‘great, because the whole third act is changing. Can you rewrite it tonight?’ I was literally on no sleep. I’d been on no sleep for days. Obviously, this was not going to be set in stone. But I was like, ‘okay, yeah, I’ve got some ideas,’ and started writing. And obviously, since the third act was changing, I needed to change the first act. And when you rewrite the third act, and the first act, the second act has to go. So basically I had to on the fly rebuild the airplane.

I would think that a movie of this size can’t just be rewritten so quickly. Don’t the action sequences need to be carefully plotted out so the stunts and the visual effects can be planned and executed? Isn’t it a massive thing with a million moving parts and if you change one you throw everything off? I … guess not? We’ll see whether the finished product feels like something that was drastically rewritten. I hope it does not.

Fast X is scheduled to drive into theaters on May 19, 2023.

  • New ‘Flash’ Poster Teases a Major DC Crossover

New ‘Flash’ Poster Teases a Major DC Crossover

We haven’t heard much about The Flash in the last few months. Well, we’ve heard plenty about the person playing the Flash — star Ezra Miller — but not so much in the context of the film, which is the first solo movie outing for DC Comics’ speedy superhero.

Instead it’s been in the context of Miller’s tumultuous personal life. They recently pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful trespass in a case stemming from an incident in May of 2022. Miller was alleged to have broken into a home in Stamford, Vermont, where several alcohol bottles were found to be missing. (Miller had previously pled not guilty to the charges including felony burglary back in October of 2022.) Miller has supposedly been in treatment for “mental health issues” since last summer.

The more controversy that Miller generated, the more everyone wondered: What does this mean for The Flash? Well, it seems like so far it means nothing, as the film is still on track to open in theaters this summer. And finally, there’s a new piece of promotional material for the film — a new poster, which shows Miller’s Flash standing beneath the classic Michael Keaton Batman Batwing. Take a look:

The Flash is one of the final DC films from Warner Bros. made prior to the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-CEOs of DC Studios. They’re in the process of starting an entirely new movie and TV universe, including new versions of Superman, Batman, and Robin. Where that leaves The Flash is unclear at this point. Reports have claimed that everyone from Henry Cavill to Gal Gadot to Jason Momoa have shot scenes or cameos for The Flash. It’s still uncertain if they will actually make the finished product — or if the movie could potentially continue with sequels set in this new DCU.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

Ezra Miller stars as Barry Allen, AKA The Flash, who pushes the limits of his superpowers in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film.

The Flash is scheduled to open in theaters on June 16, 2023. But it has been delayed before — multiple times. We’ll see if it happens again.

  • Vin Diesel Wants Robert Downey Jr. in ‘Fast & Furious 11’

Vin Diesel Wants Robert Downey Jr. in ‘Fast & Furious 11’

We all know that the Fast franchise has had a star-studded cast since its inception. Vin Diesel wants to add one more mega-star, Robert Downey Jr. We’ve seen the late Paul Walker, Charlize Theron, and with the new movie, even Jason Momoa. That being said, there’s always room for more, right? According to a recent interview ahead of the premiere of the Fast X trailer, Vin Diesel revealed a bit not just about the future of the franchise’s story, but also about who his dream cast member would be.

Vin Diesel immediately named his actor of choice, who was none other than Downey. The interviewer pressed further, asking if Vin Diesel potentially had a character in mind for him to portray.

“Without telling you too much about what happens in the future, there’s a character who is the antithesis of Dom who is promoting A.I. and driverless cars and a philosophy that with that goes your freedom. There is somebody that believes that’s the future, and that’s at direct odds with the Toretto mentality.”

When asked a question that could potentially come off as a little more… Inside baseball, Diesel gave a less straightforward answer. The interviewer asked if he had reached out to Downey Jr. to see if he had any interest, and Diesel responded by playfully saying: “How dare you ask me this question in front of all these people? I have pride and I have dignity.”

Michelle Rodriguez, one of Diesel’s co-stars, also weighed in on who she’d like to see join the Fast universe. “Who’s the guy from these amazing Jason Bourne movies? Matt Damon! IF—ing want Matt Damon. Matt Damon, would you be in a Fast and Furious movie? C’mon, we got four Oscar winners, man. And you’re an Oscar winner!”

Only time will tell if we get the pleasure of seeing either show up later on in the franchise. Until then, we can check out Fast X in theaters, debuting on May 19, 2023.

  • A John Candy Documentary Is Coming to Amazon

A John Candy Documentary Is Coming to Amazon

Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks have plans to shine some light on one of comedy’s greatest stars. John Candy is probably one of the most recognizable comedians of all time. Unfortunately, not all that much is known about his private life. He’s definitely included among the ranks of 20th century comedy legends who were gone too soon, like Chris Farley or John Belushi.

John Candy began his career with a number of friends who were active at Second City Toronto, which eventually created their own television program, called SCTV. Among the cast for the show were other comedy legends who had yet to enter the prime of their careers. The original cast included the likes of John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O’Hara, Harold Ramis, and Dave Thomas. Martin Short and Rick Moranis would join later on. This show was almost a kind of prototype for SNL, and many cast members would eventually make the switch.

Unfortunately, after a huge career and tons of memorable roles, Candy passed away of a heart attack at the age of 43. He was part of some of the best classic comedies, from Spaceballs to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. During this run, he also met Tom Hanks when he co-starred as Hanks’ brother in Splash. This must have made quite the impression on a young Colin Hanks.

Colin Hanks got the support of Candy’s widow to use never-before-seen home videos to create a documentary about his life. Hanks has quietly been working on the project for a long time, but he’s just recently managed to sell the distribution rights to Amazon. Ryan Reynolds is joining the project as producer, something he’s been doing more and more of lately. Of course, it only makes sense that one of the most prevalent comedians of our time would want to pay tribute to one of the greats.

  • Zack Snyder Supports the New DC Universe

Zack Snyder Supports the New DC Universe

With the start of an all-new DC Universe, that means the previous one started by Zack Snyder with his Man of Steel is going to finally and officially come to an end. Although Snyder left DC in the middle of production on Justice League more than five years ago, most of the DC movies since then — movies like Shazam! and Birds of Prey — expanded on what he started.

That ends with James Gunn and Peter Safran now taking the DCU in a wholly new direction, with new versions of characters like Superman (as played by Henry Cavill) and Batman (played by Ben Affleck) that Snyder had previously developed to his own specifications. Some fans remain loyal to Snyder and they’re upset that his creations won’t see the light of day again, so they continue to petition Warner Bros, DC, and Gunn on social media begging them to reverse course.

Instead of the typical #RestoreTheSnyderVerse hashtag, someone sent Gunn the hashtag #sellthesnyderversetonetflix, which got a response from Gunn. “Netflix hasn’t expressed any such interest (although we’ve discussed other stuff),” Gunn noted, added, “Zack hasn’t expressed any interest & seems to be happy doing what he’s doing.”

Gunn then told another fan that Snyder had reached out to him “to express his support” about the moves Gunn was making. “He‘s a great guy,” Gunn said of Snyder.

Technically the “Snyderverse” isn’t totally done yet. The Flash comes out this summer, and it stars Snyder’s version of the Flash, played by Ezra Miller. It seems as if the movie is still a little bit in flux because of Gunn’s arrival at DC, but at various points the movie was supposed to feature Gunn’s Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman too. Whether they will wind up in the finished film is unclear at this point.

The next DC movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is scheduled to open in theaters on March 17, 2023.

  • How Kang Won the Multiversal War

How Kang Won the Multiversal War

Kang is a time-traveling warlord from the 31st century. He has incredible technology and knowledge about the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. But he is not a god. He has no super powers behind his big brain and whatever weapons he can create or steal. And this is a guy who defeated untold numbers of his variants, and who knows how many superheroes and celestial beings (not to mention Celestials) to conquer the multiverse and create the “sacred timeline” that we first learned about in Loki.

So how did a guy who isn’t a god do all that? In our latest Kang video, we speculate about what it would have taken for He Who Remains (or Kang) to win a multiversal war. We also consider what all that means for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and why we think Kang’s plans for the future could involve none other than Galactus. Watch our video below:
