  • A look at how some extraordinary mothers are making a difference

A look at how some extraordinary mothers are making a difference

    [ad_1]

Throughout this week, CBS News featured mothers who are making a difference and highlighted the challenges facing women of all ages.

CBS News received hundreds of emails and texts from sons and daughters, husbands, sisters and friends, telling us about their fabulous mothers, stepmothers and mothers-in-law. We heard about generous moms, cancer survivors, glass ceiling-breakers and selfless caretakers. We’ve selected a few to share with you.

    Carol Kemper of Benicia, California

Carol Kemper is the definition of dedicated and selfless. As the oldest of five siblings, she is now the main caregiver for their 91-year-old mother. That is not the only way she is helping those around her. Kemper runs a gym that specializes in workouts and therapies for people with Parkinson’s disease. She was nominated by her sister, Beth Hussar.

“Some of my earliest memories are of her always taking care of others,” Hussar wrote. “She is literally the most committed and loyal person you’ve ever met.”

    Gleny Brooks of Felton, Delaware

Gleny Brooks faced a language barrier when she first came to the U.S., but her tenacity and hard work have had an immeasurable influence on her daughter, Johnsenia, who told CBS News that Brooks learned English to give her family a better life.

Johnsenia says her mom taught her the importance of education “because she embodies the fact that education is not only a vehicle for the fulfillment of goals, but it is the experience of searching for purpose and delving deeper into the motivation behind completing said goals.”

Margaret Smith of Kansas City, Missouri

Margaret Smith is known to her family and friends as “Puddin.” Her daughter Latricia told CBS News that Margaret faced many challenges and has always looked out for others. She spends her time crocheting baby blankets, giving bottled water to people in need and checking in on neighbors.

“Our mom still amazes us with her strength, love, faith and push to overcome any obstacles,” Latricia wrote.

Margaret is also an enormous fan of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and likes to say she is the Chiefs’ unofficial granny.

Susan Lemons of Green Valley, Arizona

Susan Lemons isn’t only an amazing mom, but she’s a trailblazer. Her family says she was the first female to graduate from the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in physics. Lemons powered through gender bias and broke glass ceilings. She was nominated by her daughter, Toni McGillen, who followed in her mother’s footsteps and pursued a career in STEM.

Lemons enjoys giving her children and grandchildren experiences that expand their knowledge and beliefs. McGillen says she is “an amazing mom to me two sons because of … what she taught me.”

Judy Herzfeld of Yonkers, New York

Judy Herzfeld celebrated her “re-birthday” in April, after undergoing a bone marrow transplant to cure her leukemia. Throughout her treatment, her family describes Herzfeld as “optimistic and unrelenting.” She continued managing the family architectural firm while facing chemotherapy. Herzfeld was nominated by her stepdaughter, Jayda Vera.

Vera says her stepmom, who she now calls ‘mom,’ is not afraid to show weakness but does it with serenity and a ‘believing smile.’ Now that Herzfeld is in remission, she travels as much as she can and her exuberant laugh is heard for miles.

  • 26 Fashion, Beauty, and Home Gifts That Will Spark Joy This Mother’s Day

26 Fashion, Beauty, and Home Gifts That Will Spark Joy This Mother’s Day

    [ad_1]

As much as I’d love to create a homemade gift for my mom this Mother’s Day, my artistic skills don’t cut it like they did in elementary school. Of course, she would appreciate the gesture, but I can’t say she would feel inclined to frame it and put it on display like she use to. (Can you blame her?) The gifts she would love today range from self-care essentials to home décor I know she wouldn’t buy for herself. At the risk of spoiling the surprise, she has graciously reviewed the following items and given them her stamp of approval. She made sure to note she was especially approving of the feathered Sleeper pajamas, Osea beauty trio, and floral Le Creuset cocotte. The hints have been noted, so join me in shopping these Mother’s Day gifts that are fit for any maternal figure in your life. Yes, dog moms count, too.

KeepsakeMom Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Help Fund Development of DIY Breastmilk Jewelry Making Kits

    [ad_1]

Four Unique DIY Breastmilk Stone Jewelry Kits Allow Mothers to Preserve Cherished Stage of Motherhood

KeepsakeMom, a one-of-a-kind breastmilk jewelry company focused on unique creations that celebrate and preserve this special time between mother and child, is pleased to announce a Kickstarter campaign that will allow mothers to create their own breastmilk jewelry at home. The campaign aims to raise funds for the development of four different DIY breastmilk jewelry kits — appropriately timed for Mother’s Day and featuring rewards centered around the holiday.

Launching May 1, 2023, KeepsakeMom has a $10,000 Kickstarter goal to fund the DIY kit materials, design, and packaging. Pledges will be accepted through Mother’s Day on May 14, with a 7-tier rewards program:

    • Pledge $79 or more to receive the Super Early Mother’s Day price
    • Pledge $89 or more for the Early Mother’s Day price
    • Pledge $99 or more for the Mothers’ Day Kickstarter price
    • Pledge $179 or more for the Mother’s Day BFF package, and receive two DIY kits
    • Pledge $189 or more for the Mothers’ Day Mix & Match, and receive two different DIY kits
    • Pledge $249 or more for two DIY kits and a behind-the-scenes studio tour video
    • Pledge $449 or more for the Mother’s Day Superstar price and receive all four DIY kits and the behind-the-scenes studio tour video

Each DIY kit celebrates and honors a mother’s breastfeeding journey, serving as cherished mementos of the commitment and determination required of breastfeeding. Since every mother’s breastmilk is different, with different shades and consistencies, each piece of breastmilk stone jewelry is entirely unique and personal. DIY Kit No. 1 is Harmony, a ring with seven dainty, customizable breastmilk stone gems beautifully inlaid in a gold-plated setting. DIY Kit No. 2 is Burst of Love, a breastmilk stone ring featuring a 6x8mm custom-made, oval-shaped stone that is inlaid on each side with a cluster of dazzling cubic zirconia. Bundle of Joy is DIY Kit No. 3, featuring a breastmilk stone ring with a rounded oval stone set in a 114-gauge silver band. The final DIY kit is To the Moon and Back, a necklace that transforms breastmilk into a beautiful keepsake pendant with pearl powder for a pearlescent look and opal effect.

The high-quality DIY breastmilk jewelry kits provide everything needed for at-home creations, including breast milk preservation powder, syringe, parchment paper, liquid acrylic resin, liquid resin hardener, mini measuring cups, stirring sticks, silicone mold (depending on the setting), stirring stick, toothpicks, jewelry setting, jewelry box, mini funnel, mini glass container, and step-by-step instructions. Creators may also choose to add additional personal elements for further customization, such as color shimmers, gold or silver flakes, and even a lock of their baby’s hair.

“We’re thrilled to be launching this Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for unique, beautiful breastmilk jewelry making kits that will help countless mothers forever preserve this cherished time in their life,” said KeepsakeMom Founder Anna Thachuk. “A woman’s breastfeeding journey represents the start of a beautiful bond between mother and child, and these pieces of keepsake jewelry celebrate that emotional closeness and serve as a lifelong reminder of their beginnings.”

The KeepsakeMom Kickstarter campaign will run from May 1-15, with packaging design and materials purchased between May 16-31. Packaging production will take place from June 1-15, with kits assembled and shipped between June 16-30. Estimated delivery for all pre-orders made through the Kickstarter campaign is July 2023.

KeepsakeMom has been creating exquisite breastmilk jewelry since 2020. The company’s breastmilk jewelry line is a unique collection made entirely from breast milk, inspired by Thachuk’s personal story. She found breastfeeding to be a blissful bonding experience with her first child, only to be disheartened just two months into her breastfeeding journey when her supply rapidly diminished. Understanding the incredible value of breast milk and the bond it fostered with her child, she decided to learn the art of breastmilk curing to create these stunning works of art. You can see the full collection of necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, and more, and learn more about Anna’s story, at https://www.keepsakemom.com.

Your Mom Will Love Anything You Buy Her, But These 38 Things Will Really Impress

    [ad_1]

Mother’s Day is one of those holidays that I low-key live for. Quality time with your favorite family members is key. Plus when it involves putting on a pretty floral dress and making a brunch reservation, I’m in. Even if you’re only able to celebrate Mother’s Day virtually, I insist that you find a way to treat her to a FaceTime call and maybe even a special gift that she won’t see coming.

My Mom is the type of person who would be happy even to receive a tiny candle. This gives me more of a reason to find a way to surprise her somehow and this year, I want to pull out all of the stops. After a lot of brainstorming, I came up with a whopping list of 35 items I’m considering getting for her. I’m no gatekeeper so shop with me below for a gift that is guaranteed to impress your Mom.

  • My Mom Always Asks Me What’s On-Trend, so I’m Showing Her These 31 Chic Pieces

My Mom Always Asks Me What’s On-Trend, so I’m Showing Her These 31 Chic Pieces

    [ad_1]

Since I started my career as a fashion editor, my mom has been privy to all of the trends I’m writing about on the daily. She checks my articles every day and texts me about them—it’s like she’s hanging up a report card on our family’s home fridge. While we live hundreds of miles away from each other now, we’re more connected than ever, especially when it comes to fashion. Although my mother has an incredible sense of style and self-expression, she relies on my trained eye to spot trends from miles away. Whenever she comes to visit me in New York, naturally, she’ll riffle through my recent purchases and ask me where I bought them so she can buy them herself. I used to go into her closet and steal her clothing while I was in high school, but the tables have turned, and frankly, I’m honored.

Now that Mother’s Day is on the horizon, I decided to curate a few outfits I know she’ll love based on the spring trends we’ve both been writing about. While the gift isn’t totally a surprise, the exact details of the outfit I’m picking out are. Enter Nordstrom’s incredible roster of new arrivals, contemporary trends, and luxe basics I’m pulling together to make magic happen. From classic staples to daring printed dresses, these are the Nordstrom finds we’re both obsessing at over the moment. There’s something for every price point, age, and style at Nordstrom—scroll below to discover it all.

  • Princess Kate Celebrates Mother’s Day With a New Portrait of All Three of Her Kids

Princess Kate Celebrates Mother’s Day With a New Portrait of All Three of Her Kids

    [ad_1]

Princess Kate celebrated Mother’s Day in the UK by sharing a new portrait of herself with her three children.

To commemorate the holiday, the royal shared a photo of herself sitting in a tree with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis on her and husband Prince William‘s joint Instagram account on Sunday. “Happy Mother’s Day from our family to yours ❤️,” the Princess of Wales captioned the image. For the family portrait taken by photographer Matt Porteous, Kate wore a white button-up shirt, jeans, and white sneakers, while George wore a blue polo shirt and black shorts, Charlotte wore a denim romper, and Louis wore a black-and-white striped polo with jean shorts. In a second image she shared on social media, Kate can be seen cradling her youngest son in her arms as she looks down at him lovingly. Based on their outfits, the pictures appear to have been taken at the same time as the family’s 2022 Christmas card. Those photos showed all five family members holding hands as they strolled down a sunny country lane near their new home in Norfolk, Anmer Hall, part of the royal family’s Sandringham Estate.

The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children are currently all gearing up for King Charles‘s coronation on May 6, which George, Charlotte, and Louis “are expected to join their parents” for, per The Times. They will all be on “public display” in a horse-drawn carriage as it leaves Westminster Abbey following the crowning ceremony. But according to The Telegraph, William and Kate are still debating whether or not to give their eldest son an official role in the coronation proceedings. During past coronations, the younger heirs to the throne have traditionally remained in the congregation.

However, George might get to take part in a newly televised aspect of the ceremony as there is some discussion of making the previously private moment when the Archbishop of Canterbury rubs the new monarchs with oil under a canopy public. The Sunday Times reported that Queen Consort Camilla would like to include her five teenage grandchildren into the ceremony by having them hold the canopy during this important moment. The outlet added that Charles and Camilla met with Kate and William to discuss the possibility of incorporating George into that element of the ceremony as well. “It sends a nice signal and is quite a bold move,” a source told the outlet. “It is another example of the king and queen Consort being unafraid to shake things up a bit to reflect the realities of modern life, of which a blended family is a central element.”

Marshall Plan for Moms Mother’s Day Mission: Cure Chronic Mom Guilt

    [ad_1]

Release of new campaign highlights burnout and exhaustion facing America’s Moms; calls on everyone who knows a mom to take steps to help

    Press Release

    May 2, 2022

In the lead up to Mother’s Day, Marshall Plan for Moms is releasing a campaign that promises a “cure” for mom guilt: affordable childcare, paid leave, and equal pay for moms. Led by Girls Who Code Founder Reshma Saujani, the new Marshall Plan for Moms video calls attention to the burnout and exhaustion America’s moms are facing and invites moms and those who love them to join the movement for change.

With a sense of humor and humility, the video is a spoof on a stereotypical pharmaceutical ad, highlighting the tell-tale symptoms of chronic mom guilt and even the likely side effects of the cure (think: joy, sleep, sex, and the pleasure of pooping private).

    Watch the video here:

Marshall Plan for Moms wanted to tap into a cultural moment that is known for celebrating moms, but do so in a way that recognizes and highlights what moms are actually experiencing and shines a light on their truths.

“No one expects motherhood to be easy,” said Reshma Saujani, founder and CEO of Marshall Plan for Moms. “But for moms in the U.S., who are working around the clock trying to do two full-time jobs without basic support, it’s almost impossible. And the worst part is that as moms we think we are the ones who are failing, that it’s our fault. This Mother’s Day, we wanted to turn that mom guilt on its head and say: “Hey moms, the problem isn’t you, it’s America.”

“As an agency founded and owned by moms, we are well aware of the s***show of the past two years,” said Katie Keating, Co-Founder / Co-Chief Creative Officer of Fancy. “So we rallied the troops of mom creatives, strategists, production, account people, and everyone else and set out to let moms know that whether they Work From Home, Stay At Home, or are in the office, they are not alone, their pain is real, and Marshall Plan for Moms has their backs.”

This initiative is the latest in a series of actions from Marshall Plan for Moms to center mothers in our economic recovery. In January 2021, the Marshall Plan for Moms launched with an ad in the New York Times calling on the White House and Congress to value women’s labor and pass long overdue policies like paid family leave, affordable childcare, and pay equity. The organization continues to champion public and private sector policies to support moms through its programs and thought leadership.

Become an advocate for the policies that matter. Join the Marshall Plan for Moms movement at https://marshallplanformoms.com/.

    About Marshall Plan for Moms

Founded by Girls Who Code founder Reshma Saujani, we advocate for public and private sector changes to expand choices for women and remove barriers to equality, finishing the fight for women’s equality once and for all.

First US senator to give birth in office offers heartfelt Mother’s Day message: ‘You’re what keeps this country strong’ | CNN Politics

    Washington
    CNN
     —

Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, the first sitting US senator to give birth while in office, offered a heartfelt Mother’s Day message on Sunday, celebrating moms nationwide for “growing the next generation for our nation.”

“Hang in there, sister. We’re in this together, and nobody has perfect work-life balance, everybody struggles, and so do the best that you can,” the Democrat told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.”

“You’re what keeps this country strong.”

Duckworth and her husband, Bryan Bowlsbey, are the parents of two daughters, Abigail and Maile. Abigail was born while Duckworth was serving in the US House as a Chicago-area congresswoman.

In 2018, after giving birth to Maile, Duckworth became the first US senator to cast a vote on the floor with her newborn by her side.

Her vote came just one day after the Senate changed long-standing rules to allow newborns on the chamber floor during votes. The rule change, voted through by unanimous consent, was done to accommodate senators with newborn babies and lets them bring children under 1 year old onto the Senate floor and breastfeed them during votes.

“It feels great,” Duckworth told reporters at the time. “It is about time, huh?”

The Illinois Democrat on Sunday spoke about Democratic efforts to pass legislation to address rising child care costs.

“Families spend as much as a quarter to half of their income on child care, and there’s no way for working families to survive under those burdens,” Duckworth said.

“We keep trying,” she added when asked by Bash about finding bipartisan solutions.

Duckworth is a retired Army lieutenant colonel who was a helicopter pilot during the Iraq War. She was the first female double amputee from the war after suffering severe combat wounds when her Black Hawk helicopter was shot down.

Duckworth served in the Obama administration as an assistant secretary of Veterans Affairs. She was first elected to the US House in 2012 and the Senate four years later.

Mother’s Day Surprise: New Card Game Reveals Millennial Moms Prefer Eating Their Placentas

    [ad_1]

Millennial moms admit their enjoyment of alcohol, lack of sex, and multiple ways they consume their afterbirths in 8,000 crowd sourced submissions for a new card game.

    Press Release

    May 4, 2016

In the process of developing KinderPerfect, a new card game for parents now on Kickstarter, over 700 millennial parents submitted 8,000 card ideas to create parenting-themed question and answer cards similar to the popular Cards Against Humanity card game. Their suggestions for KinderPerfect reveal a generational shift in parenting.

“We expected to see many card suggestions around poop,” says Wayan Vota, co-founder of KinderPerfect. “We were really surprised by all the ways millennial moms are consuming their own placenta.”

“We expected to see many card suggestions around poop. We were really surprised by all the ways millennial moms are consuming their own placenta.”

    Wayan Vota, co-founder, KinderPerfect

Crowd sourced card suggestions included the seemingly mainstream practice of creating placenta pills from the afterbirth, yet other ideas included “an ice-cold placenta smoothie,” “placenta pancakes,” and “placenta lasagna.” Some parents even suggested, “an umbilical cord sample platter.”

“As a GenX parent, I never thought about eating my own placenta when giving birth to our two daughters,” says Amy Vota, KinderPerfect co-founder. “Yet it turns out that humans are one of the very few mammals who do not engage in placentophagy – eating their afterbirth. Millennial moms are taking us back to our mammalia roots.”

Consuming breast milk was also central to card suggestion ideas, including “breast milk popsicles,” “breast milk coffee creamer,” and “breast milk pancakes.”

Other insights from the thousands of card idea submissions include a deep hatred of Caillou, an animated television series about an inquisitive four year of the same name. For example, “Caillou, that whiny bitch,” is indicative of the overall dislike of the children’s character.

“I never imagined that a cartoon toddler would create such animosity,” says Wayan Vota. “As an American, I am amazed at parents’ visceral hatred of a bald Canadian child.”

Netflix is now central to the parenting experience, with multiple references to just watching, and often binge watching the television streaming service. Suggestions included the phrase, “Netflix and chill,” that refers to having sex while watching a TV program. Netflix is also used a digital babysitter, where that extra hour of screen time is an opportunity for parents to create younger siblings.

Sadly, millennial parents are not having that much sex. Following in the footsteps of their GenX and Baby Boomer parents, they are going long stretches without sex, or trying to copulate in hushed and hurried circumstances, such as “silent couch sex,” that was mentioned along with “Netflix and chill.” Card suggestions included question cards like “Our code word for sex is ____,” with responses including, “adult wrestling,” “daddy time,” and “Dora the Explorer.”

“During every Design Party, where we test out new card ideas, the ‘Our code word for sex is ____,’ card always creates a entire discussion about the duality of being parents and also being lovers,” says Wayan Vota. “Parental sex, and the lack of it, is a timeless challenge for parents,” concurs Amy Vota. “Millennial parents have more options to entertain and distract their children to allow for adult intimacy, but they still struggling with exhaustion that comes with parenting.”

One way millennial parents are coping is through copious amounts of alcohol. KinderPerfect uses “mommy juice” as a euphemism for wine, but submitters are more frank with their alcoholism, and associated guilt. There were 40% more card suggestions that featured “wine” than those that featured “sex,” with multiple references to “a sippy cup of wine,” “the whole bottle of wine,” “the second bottle of wine,” “not enough wine,” and a favorite, “a bottle of fine whine”.

    ABOUT KINDERPERFECT

KinderPerfect is a new card game to turn the pain of parenting into an excuse for mommy juice. KinderPerfect is a runaway hit on Kickstarter, raising over $16,000 in pre-orders from the USA, Canada, and the UK. Similar to the popular Cards Against Humanity card game, KinderPerfect is best played by groups of parents – on a Moms’ Night Out to laugh at the challenges of parenthood or at baby showers to surprise new parents with the joys of poop.

KinderPerfect was founded by Wayan and Amy Vota, parents of two daughters, 5 and 7 years old. Wayan Vota is a co-founder of JadedAid, a card game to save humanitarians that was successfully launched on Kickstarter in 2015. Amy Vota is a co-founder of several parents groups in Washington, DC, USA.
